I've been going to the Natsukashi CARnival at the famous Yutoku Inari Shrine in Saga Prefecture for many, many years, and it never disappoints. It consistently features a broad range of the more unusual domestically-produced vehicles balanced with more high-profile Japanese cars of the Showa period as well as a sprinkling of European manufactured cars. I really can't explain the relatively high number of Toyotas on show in this video. Toyota (Toyopet, actually) Crowns and Carinas are well represented. There're a couple of Toyota Publicas, and the thumbnail image features a P20 Toyota Publica powered by a flat (boxer) 2 cylinder engine. And One Of The Coolest Shakotan Workshops In The Land Earlier this month I took a trip from Fukuoka to Kyushu's southern most prefecture, Kagoshima. The three objectives were: 1. to see the last remaining Isuzu Statesman DeVilles, 2. to see the wonderful shakotan creations of Higashi Bankin. 3. to enjoy epic car-spotting along the way. Am happy to say, all boxed got ticked. The recipe to success at Higashi Bankin is as follows: 1. Slam all cars on their guts. 2. Add period-appropriate, but wide, wide wheels. Also, wheel flares/overfenders. 3. Faultless paint and panel is key, but rust, pumps and patina are also optimal. 4. Consider adding a 13b or 12a rotary engine. The most significant car feature in this video outside of the glorious kyusha of Higashi Bankin is the black, 308 V8 powered Isuzu Statesman located in a shopping centre nearby. Oh, what a happy coincidence! Many Holden enthusiasts might be familia with the Roadpacer, which was a HJ/HX Holden Premier based luxury sedan for Mazda. Few will know of the long-wheel-base, V8 powered Holden that Isuzu gained access to upon tiring up with General Motors in the early 1970's. I'm always on the lookout for quality automotive museums, and the cars of Mazda Classic Automobil Museum Frey certainly is one of the best collections I've ever come across. If you happen to be visiting southern Germany to cities such as Stuttgart or Munich, or you just love dorito-powered Mazdas, I cannot recommend this place highly enough. What can you expect to see? All the significant Mazdas from over the last seven decades interspersed with numerous obscure and also once-common models. I'll even suggest to those mad-about-Mazdas, that there will be cars here that will surprise you. Though not in strictly chronological order, the cars appear to be loosely laid out from the older, smaller cars (Japanese Kei-class), to medium then larger passenger vehicles. There are several sporty detours along the way, such as the array of Miata/Roadster/MX-5's, the RX models (RX2, RX3, RX4, RX5, RX7, RX9!!), and even the granddaddy L10A Mazda Cosmo. Oh! And my personal favourite, The Mazda Roadpacer. There's a lot of nonsense out there on the rotary-powered 'Holden Premier', but there's so much more to this divisive, oddball car. Plus, Epic Old-school Track Datsuns & Toyotas I spent a day at Kyushu's Autopolis racetrack for the Autumn round of Exciting Battle Kyushu! It was a day filled with 110 & 310 Datsun Sunny, 240Z (Nissan Fairlady Z S30), Datsun Bluebird, Honda CR-X, Mazda RX7, Toyota AE86, Nissan Skyline (Hakosuka & Kenmeri), Toyota Starlet; did I eave any out? Probably. The focus of this video is the cars in the pit area as they drive in and out, and prepare to race on the track. Special mention must go to the 510 Bluebird-faced Datsun Sunny Truck. It's been immaculately prepared and looks incredible. Its A-series 4 cylinder engine has twin carburettors, wheels appear to be BRE style (super wide) wheels. Final special mention is the A60 series Toyota Carina liftback that was once white but is now as orange as it could possibly be. Wheels are Hayashi Racing Type CR. Engine is a 4AGE.
