The modern horror game is one that sticks pretty close to the blueprint laid out by Capcom's 1996 release Resident Evil. Slow pacing, methodical puzzles, and scares centered around things that jumped out of the darkness were the order of the day then, and since that time, games have roughly based themselves on this concept. Surreal's new game, The Suffering, goes for the horror thing with creepy monster design and startling visual trickery, but it also ditches most of the ammo-conservation and slow pacing found in a majority of horror-themed games. The end result is a much more action-packed experience that might be a little too straightforward in spots, but it does make for a solid action game.

GUN is a video game developed by Neversoft and published by Activision for the Xbox 360, Xbox, GameCube, PC, PSP and PlayStation 2. It is set in the American Old West in the early 1880s. The protagonist, Colton White, is a hunter who turns into a gunslinger when his murdered father, Ned, instructs him to go to Dodge City. GUN features a free-roaming environment, including side-missions and other such touches. It was released in North America on November 8, 2005 and in mid-to late November in Europe. Since October 13, 2006, the game has also been available to buy on Valve's content delivery platform, Steam.

LASR's single-player game challenges you to become the king of the L.A. motorsports scene by taking on a seemingly never-ending stream of challengers looking to knock you down a few rungs on the street racing ladder. This is not a bad concept for a game, but where LASR fails to inspire is in its execution. For example, instead of having free reign of the city, picking up challenges as you drive your whip around the town, you'll simply be parked in one of four increasingly prestigious sections of Los Angeles. As you sit there, challengers will simply pull up to you one by one and challenge you to a race. Or, often more amusingly, a challenger may cast a badly translated zinger your way, such as "I don't want to ruin your confidence! Now get lost!" Ooh burn.
