Holy Week, Commuting and the Ro-Ro

It's that time of the year many Pinoy employees in the big city await, probably second only to Christmas. Well, many call it pasko too, referring to the "Pasko ng Pagkabuhay" or Feast of the Resurrection that culminates the Holy Week festivities in the Philippines. For the devout, it's a time of reflection for past sins committed or omitted, some even going to the extremes and nailing themselves to the cross. Personally, I don't agree with what these penitents do, for Christ died for our sins once and for all, right? There is no need to repeat what He was already Victorious for.

But if these activities are what these penitents BELIEVE could atone for their sins, then so be it. For what is more important is that they believe and are repenting of their sins -- while the hecklers and the know-it-all's throw all sorts of pun, criticisms, and what have you towards the penitents' way. But if you asked them what sort of "repentance" they have done for this Holy Week - a prayer maybe, or reconciliation with someone they have a grudge with, etc -- they would simply look you in the eye, smile, and say they don't have any "serious sin" to merit such penance.

For the rest of the madlang people, Holy Week is another excuse for a vacation, going on a road-trip or excursion with family or friends, merry making, getting drunk, stuffing on food and snacks, oblivious to the "penance" ongoing in various parts of the country. You can see bus terminals, airports and passenger ships packed to the brim with commuters trying to make it in time for the Holy Week celebrations in their own provinces anywhere in the archipelago. Add to this the thousands upon thousands of private vehicles jamming the provincial roads like sardines waiting to be canned. What would normally be a two-hour drive to the beach would take them half a day under the blistering heat of the summer sun -- well, it's Holy Week after all right? Penance time!

For commuters, the Ro-Ro is definitely a convenient gift from the heavens. This is one thing I could be grateful for with the past administration. For those of you who are not familiar, Ro-Ro means Roll-on Roll-off, where large barges carry their unique cargo of passenger buses, private cars, and any other wheeled vehicles over the sea, carrying them from port to port and allowing them to roll away at the port of destination then back again. Travel time is shorter compared to the usual land routes. It does take a longer time compared to booking a flight and heading to your destination on a plane, but it is definitely more cost effective, more scenic and is more convenient if you're lugging along with you some bulky merchandise for pasalubong or trade.

The number of bus networks plying the Ro-Ro route has also multiplied during the past couple of years, making it easy for commuters to simply go to the bus terminals, pay or reserve their bus tickets, and eat at the nearest fast food restaurant while waiting for boarding time. The buses are new, air-conditioned, and have comfortable seats. You can bring food, snacks and drinks which you can munch along the way, or wait for the stopovers where passengers are given ample time to eat at a local diner or use the rest rooms at their convenience.

These are some of the highlights me and my wife look forward to whenever we ride the Ro-Ro to go home to our province in Aklan or spend the holidays in Boracay. We can buy a lot of local goodies along the way, from Batangas, Mindoro, and Caticlan in Aklan -- with passengers complaining to the bus conductors to stop letting vendors in as they were running out of money buying all the neat stuff peddled!

The next time you plan to go to the provinces, I suggest you try the Ro-Ro route. You can simply search for schedules and routes in the web or watch out for future info that will be posted in Best Philippine Attractions. It would be a great way to travel and would definitely be a new experience even for you veteran commuters out there.

Yeah. Even during the Holy Week.

I am sure that most of us have experienced riding the LRT and MRT more than once. I must say that the LRT and MRT already became significant part of our transportation system since it is cheap and fast. People from different social classes are riding these trains mainly for convenience.

I was an avid train commuter when I was in college and now that I’m part of the working force, riding these trains became more frequent since I don’t have my own car and I don’t know how to drive. I think more people will agree that this way of commuting is much better than the others (buses, jeepneys, FX’s, etc.) because almost everyone can afford it and it can take us anywhere we wish on a short span of time.
According to a famous search engine, these trains accommodate almost 600,000 people everyday. Riding the LRT and MRT can only cost us P12.00 – P15.00. Like what I’ve said it is cheap and fast (if there are no technical problems or long queues). I think these trains are very essential to our lives because no one can escape the fact that for over 30 years, this transportation system has been giving most of us convenience and unforgettable experiences.

But let us also admit that there are disadvantages on riding these trains as well.

The most common conflicts people encounter inside the LRT and MRT are long queues on the ticket booths, technical problems, robbery and small fights because of inconsiderate passengers. Let’s leave the problems in technicality and queuing to the management because they are the one’s who are greatly responsible for this matter. I think it is more interesting to talk about the behavior of different passengers because most of us are forgetting the rule of right conduct. Although good manners and etiquette were defined by so many scholars and in so many ways, I still believe that this is a common knowledge we all need to be aware of.

Practicing right conduct is something we can all do regardless of our age, social status, educational background and whereabouts. It maybe hard for us to absolutely do this but what matters most is the will to master the art of humanity.

Based on Dr. Michael Brein’s research, we, human beings have the idea of enhancing our self-esteem by means of travelling. It is when we travel that we grow as a person. Sometimes, we portray an image that can make other people think that we are superior to them. As a travel psychologist, he knows that we all want to feel good about ourselves and we wanted to be admired by the people we encounter.

This can explain why some people show arrogance inside the LRT and MRT. Some people think that they are more superior than the others, that’s why they fight their way on a rude manner. Since people want to enhance their self-esteem, they tend to think that one of the best ways to do so is to actually belittle a person. People don’t realize that they ridiculous while fighting with someone because of riding the LRT and MRT. I think the more they boost their confidence and esteem, the more they lose their manners.

These trains are slowly becoming a place where people truly show their alter egos. Even if someone is wearing a coat and tie or a classy dress, their attitude towards the whole trip and the people around them are the opposite of how glamorous their appearances are. Like what I always tell my friend, some people lose their ethics whenever they are inside the train. For whatever reason, some passengers have the urge of being mean and ill-mannered. Indeed, this is a free country but it is not an excuse for us to forget that everything around us should be bounded with respect.

Today is year 2010. People are expected to be more civilized and smart. But why are we acting as if we’re from a different place? An era where there are no rules followed. An era where people are using their fists instead of their minds. An era where people are acting like animals, killing to survive. An era where no one dares to step aside for the sake of their neighbor.

A simple train ride can make us realize that there are some habits that we all need to drop. Habits and attitudes that are embarrassing to be inherited or witnessed by the new generation. Nobody is perfect but we are always given a chance to right what’s wrong and to make our everyday journey more significant. On a simple note, these trains are just means of transportation where a lot of things happen within its boundaries.

But if we will take time to study the reasons behind these trains’ existence, maybe we will all realize that these trains can actually help us see the different realities life has to offer.

STRADCOM and the R.F.I.D. Scam

Subject: Ang Istorya sa Likod ng R.F.I.D. Scam - kung may sasakyan ka, makialam ka

Ang kontrata ng STRADCOM sa computerization ng LTO ay nagtapos na. Subalit dahil nakasaad sa kontrata na "HAWAK NILA SA LEEG" ang LTO, dahil sa pagtatapos ng kanilang kontrata ay dadalhin nila ang mga computer hardware at software, at ang ititira ay ang DATA lamang, nanatili ang STRADCOM sa LTO.

Patuloy sa paninigil ng COMPUTER FEE kahit na ang DATA ng bawat sasakyan ay naka-encode na at wala ng dapat pang i-build up o i-data entry. Patuloy ang pagkulekta ng STRADCOM ng bayad, dahil walang kumukwestiyon, sa ilalim ng ilong ng mga motorista. Sa kabila nito, ang pamunuan ng DOTC at ng LTO ay humingi ng mas malaking "PARTE", ibig sabihin, patong, lagay, kickback, etc, dahil nga naman, tubong lugaw na ang STRADCOM dahil dapat tanggal na nga sila.

Syempre pa, medyo nagpakipot ang pamunuan ng STRADCOM at nagmungkahi na magdagdag na lang ng mga singilin sa motorista dahil anila, mga bobo naman at hindi aangal. Kung may aangal man, kokonti lang dahil gaano na lang ba ang sisingilin eh minsanan lang naman ang bayaran isang taon. At anila, may pera ang mga motorista dahil naka-sasakyan nga.

Dito na ipinatawag ng STRADCOM ang kanilang mga "money making" thinktank upang umisip ng mga paraan kung paano pa makaka-kolekta ng dagdag kita upang lalo pa silang magkamal ng salapi. Unang pinalusot ay ang tinatawag na INTER-CONNECTION FEE daw. Ito ay karagdagang P70.00 pesos kapag ikaw ay nagpa-smoke belching test.

Napansin ba ninyo, bukod sa P350.00, eh may naka staple pang resibo na P70.00? Me narinig ba kayong angal? me umapila ba? wala di ba. e ano nga ba yung P70.00 peso eh naka Honda CITY ka naman. chicken feed!!! YUN ANG BASIS NG STRADCOM, walang aangal dahil barya lang ang sinisingil nila. Naunawaan nyo ba kung ano yung inter-connection fee? Malay mo nga naman diba, nadale na kayo dun pero okay lang kayo kasi nga P70.00 lang.

Teka, 8 million registered vehicle X 70.00 = 560 million pesos na walang kahirap hirap. KADA TAON HA. Malaki din pala nadudugas namin sa inyo. Aangal na ba kayo?

Pero dahil mga buwaya nga, talagang walang kabusugan. Kaya pinulong ulit ng mga hunghang ang mga evil brains para utusan na, "Pigain na natin ng husto ang mga bobong motorista, bayad naman ng bayad eh". At dito na ipinanganak ang unang plano na "Car info sticker" kung saan didikitan ng sticker ang mga sasakyan, nakalagay dito ang mga detalye na makikita din naman sa "Certificate of Registration" o "CR", at sisingilin nila ng P300.00 yung sticker.

Di syempre sangkatutak na angal ang inabot nila. Napigilan ito, hindi napatupad. Bulilyaso! eh kasi nga walang bahid High Tech.

Mantakin mo nga naman na sticker lang tapos ang impormasyon eh nasa CR na din, hindi umubra. Ipa-photocopy (reduced) na lang yung CR at idikit sa windshield, sabi ng mga pilosopo kaya na-abort yung evil plan number 1. Pero hindi agad susuko ang evil brains ng STRADCOM, kailangang magmadali dahil dapat magkapera at ma-implement ng October. Na browse sa internet ng mga IT gurus ang tungkol sa RFID, at iminungkahi agad kahit na hindi pang vehicle talaga. Napagkasunduang, pwede, at inaprubahan agad. Ang siste, ang lalamanin lang ding impormasyon nito ay kung ano ang nakalagay sa CR, pero, may bahid high tech na, kasi R.F.I.D. na.

Naintindihan nyo ba ibig sabihin ng RFID? Basahin nyo na lang sa last part.

Tatlong klase ang pwedeng gamit ng RFID:

1. sa simpleng paliwanag, parang tag lang ito, barcode or product code. na ang corresponding data orinformation ay mare-retrieve mo sa main computer gamit ang isang reader or scanner.

2. o kung ito ay may microchip, pwedeng mag store ng data dito at marere-trieve din ang data gamit ang isang reader.

3. at ang pinaka delikado sa lahat, na maaring gamitin laban sa mga motorista, PWEDE KANG I-TRACK ng ahensiya.

RFID ang gamit sa mga producto sa mga dept stores na medyo mahal ang item at RFID din ang gamit sa mga cargo ng freight services. Pero may pakinabang ba talaga tayo sa RFID kung ito ay gagamitin sa mga sasakyan? WALA. ang tunay na gamit ng RFID ay para sa PRODUCT TAGGING, INVENTORY, AT TRACKING. Sa mga producto para ma-track mo kung nasaan na yung location dahil kada daan nito sa isang area, nababasa ng reader ang RFID at alam na dumaan na ito.

Maaaring naglalaman din ito ng info kung sino ang manufacturer, kung ano ang laman, timbang at kung saan ang destinasyon, dahil nakalagay na ito sa RFID o sa main database. Alam ninyo, may malaking blunder ang kompanya namin dito eh, ang STRADCOM, dahil nag-implement kami ng information via TEXT lang kung saan ite-text nyo lang ang plate number, makukuha na information ng isang vehicle.

Eh, imomodify lang namin yung info na binibigay ng TEXT project namin, at bigyan exclusivity sa mga enforcers lang ng LTO, nagawa na agad ang gustong gawin ng RFID System. Di ko na nga lang masikmura ang kagarapalan ng mga amo namin na sobrang magpayaman samantalang kami ang tumatrabaho eh nangungupahan pa din kami ng bahay.

Anak ng toklang, ibuking ko na lang di ba. Eto itanong ninyo sa STRADCOM para mabuliyaso sila.

Bakit kelangan ng i-implement ngayong October?

1-kasi pinipiga sila ng isang mataas na opisyal ng LTO na tatakbo sa darating na halalan.

2-Kasi kung mapalusot nila ng October, tahimik ang november at December, pag dating ng January parang may basbas na dahil nga nasimulan na ng October. at dapat mag start na ngayong October, kasi pag sa January mag start, titirahin ng mga pulitiko, at baka tamaan pa ng ban.

Pag naka RFID ba, di na kelangan magpa stencil at magpa smoke belching pag magpapa rehistro? Kelangan pa din. Ano yung sinasabi nilang mapapabilis na rehistro? For your info walang mase-save na time sa pagpapa-rehistro ninyo. same procedure.

THE PILOT

Years ago, I was enthralled as I listened to a pastor who for several years had faithfully served the church. His executive responsibilities had taken him all over this country. As he concluded his message, he told of one of the most frightening yet thought-provoking experiences of his life.

He had been on a long flight. The first warning of the approaching problems came when the sign on the airplane flashed on: "Fasten your seat belts."

Then, after a while, a calm voice said, "We shall not be serving the beverages at this time as we are expecting a little turbulence. Please be sure your seat belt is fastened."

As he looked around the aircraft, it became obvious that many of the passengers were becoming apprehensive.

Later, the voice of the announcer said, "We are so sorry that we are unable to serve the meal at this time. The turbulence is still ahead of us."

And then the storm broke. The ominous cracks of thunder could be heard even above the roar of the engines. Lightning lit up the darkening skies, and within moments that great plane was like a cork tossed around on a celestial ocean. One moment the airplane was lifted on terrific currents of air; the next, it dropped as if it were about to crash.

The pastor confessed that he shared the discomfort and fear of those around him. He said, "As I looked around the plane, I could see that nearly all the passengers were upset and alarmed. Some were praying. The future seemed ominous and many were wondering if they would make it through the storm.

And then, I suddenly saw a girl to whom the storm meant nothing. She had tucked her feet beneath her as she sat on her seat and was reading a book. Everything within her small world was calm and orderly.

Sometimes she closed her eyes, then she would read again; then she would straighten her legs, but worry and fear were not in her world. When the plane was being buffeted by the terrible storm, when it lurched this way and that, as it rose and fell with frightening severity, when all the adults were scared half to death, that marvelous child was completely composed and unafraid."

The minister could hardly believe his eyes.

It was not surprising therefore, that when the plane finally reached its destination and all the passengers were hurrying to disembark, he lingered to speak to the girl whom he had watched for such a long time.

Having commented about the storm and behavior of the plane, he asked why she had not been afraid. The sweet child replied, "Sir, my Dad is the pilot, and he is taking me home."

Just last weekend on Friday night we parked in a public parking area. As we drove away I noticed a sticker on the rear window of the car. When I took it off after I got home, it was a receipt for gas. Luckily my friend told me not to stop as it could be someone waiting for me to get out of the car. Then we received this email yesterday:

WARNING FROM POLICE - THIS APPLIES TO BOTH WOMEN AND MEN: BEWARE OF PAPER ON THE BACK WINDOW OF YOUR VEHICLE -- NEW WAY TO DO CARJACKINGS (NOT A JOKE)

Heads up everyone! Please, keep this circulating.... You walk across the parking lot, unlock your car and get inside... You start the engine and shift into Reverse. When you look into the rearview mirror to back out of your parking space, you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the rear window. So, you shift into Park, unlock your doors, and jump out of your car to remove that paper (or whatever it is) that is obstructing your view. When you reach the back of your car, that is when the carjackers appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off. They practically mow you down as they speed off in your car. And guess what, ladies? I bet your purse is still in the car. So now the carjacker has your car, your home address, your money, and your keys. Your home and your whole identity are now compromised!

BEWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED

If you see a piece of paper stuck to your back window, just drive away. Remove the paper later. And be thankful that you read this e-mail. I hope you will forward this to friends and family, especially to women.. A purse contains all kinds of personal information and identification documents and you certainly do NOT want this to fall into the wrong hands. Please keep this going and tell all your friends.

The Difference Between Rich and Poor People

One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, "How was the trip?"

"It was great, Dad."

"Did you see how poor people live?" the father asked.

"Oh yeah," said the son.

"So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?" asked the father.

The son answered:

"I saw that we have one dog and they had four.

We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end.

We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night.

Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.

We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight.

We have servants who serve us, but they serve others.

We buy our food, but they grow theirs.

We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them."

The boy's father was speechless.

Then his son added, "Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are."

Isn't perspective a wonderful thing? Makes you wonder what would happen if we all give thanks for everything we have, instead of worrying about what we don't have.

A Place Called Han Wok Blue Wave

I just had one of the best lunch experiences in years yesterday. And it was Chinese cuisine!

I accepted the invitation from Mr. Jack Wong and wife Helen, fellow entrepreneurs from Wong Group of Companies to come and visit their Han Wok Chinese Restaurant at the Blue Wave Commercial Complex at D. Macapagal Avenue. I was really glad that I did.

Together with Jack and Helen, we were joined by Jo Frando of Taxmaster Accounting Services, Nathaniel Torilla of Han Wok Blue Wave and Rome Sherriff Montoya of Worldnet Business Center over lunch. They were a really cool group and I had a chance to learn more about Wong Group of Companies and their world-class services.

We were served with Sauteed Squid with Bell peppers, with really tender and tasty squid with just the right touch of chili and spices. Another dish wash their Chami special, one of the best pancit dish I've ever tasted. Not to be outdone was the Fried String Beans with Minced Pork, that tingles the palate with just the right combination of vegetables and meat. But my favorite was the Sweet and Sour Fish Fillet, which I mistakenly thought of as pork due to the very tasty morsels that I began to lose count of calories I'm ingesting.

Chami Special

According to Jack, what we had we're not even Han Wok's specialties although the dishes could rival any Chinese restaurant meals I've laid my taste buds on. Looking at the gallery of food portraits on the wall, I could see that they have 3 Cups Chicken in Hotpot, Poached Tofu, Beef Hofan Guisado, Chili Shrimp with Snow Peas and a whole lot more. I would surely come back for more of these good stuff and write about it here.

I was really surprised with how varied the dishes were, which can cater to any preference and diet that their customers would have. Here's one thing that's awesome - the price was really competitive for a Chinese restaurant of this caliber. They even have econo meals for those on the budget but looking at the flyers they had on these meals, they're only "econo" on the price tag but not on the food. Really cost effective!

3 Cups Chicken in Hotpot

At that time, a photo shoot was ongoing as Han Wok Blue Wave is boosting their product offerings with more dish selections, cocktails and delicacies. Looking at the samples used in the shoot, my mouth began to water even after that sumptuous meal and a cup of Han Wok's Syphon Brewed Coffee. The coffee was really good and could rival any overpriced coffee franchise out there. One thing I noticed was that they're giving out free newspapers to all patrons! According to Jack, he'll be setting up a Wi-Fi station there so every visitor could access the Internet while sipping their coffee or eating their favorite meals.

As I head back home, I can't help but notice how Han Wok stands out among the other food establishments in the area. If you're tired of all the commercialized food out there and want your taste buds pampered, then I advice you to visit Han Wok Blue Wave and try their delectable delicacies. You won't regret it I guarantee.

CROSSROADS

Sometimes, when I look back and think of all the could-have-beens in my life,

I often wonder: Did I make the right choice.... Did I miss a road sign.... Am I on the right track....

C R O S S R O A D S.....

They happen all the time, Saying goodbye to some, Choosing only one. Letting go, holding on...settling for now, But facing what must come.....

Yes, in life we all reach a crossroad sometime. We make painful decisions and take some risks as we pursue our dreams.

But one should not stay at the CROSSROADS too long. For even the birds have to leave their nests sometime & learn how to fly.

Life's road is long & rough, and there are stretches when one has to do it all alone.

And should you meet the cross at the road, be consoled. Yes, more often than not, the road less travelled will surely bring you home.

Face the light and the shadow falls behind you. Turn your back & the shadow stays in front of you.

Indeed, the truth hurts, but it will surely set you free. The bitter pangs of parting will give birth to another moment called GROWING.

So grow on.....until it's time for you to move on....and face the crossroads again,

Knowing that God loves you and is in control of everything.

Be strong at the crossroads.

Embrace the CROSS at the ROAD. The Lord is at the cross, at the road, at all your CROSSROADS......

A Nonsensical Journey

(a journey into nonsensical realms, which usually occurs when riding a bus... and not paying attention)

LINGGO noon. Nakatakda ang araw na 'yon para sa date namin ng girlfiend kong si Maji. Pero tumawag s'ya sa 'kin at sinabing cancel muna ang date dahil sasamahan niya daw ang kanyang tita sa isang importanteng lakad.

Sabi ko okay lang, naintindihan ko. Subalit dahil wala akong magawa sa bahay at talagang bored ako noon, ako na lang ang pumunta sa mall at nanood ng sine mag-isa. Libang na libang ako sa paggagala sa mall, di ko alam na iyon na pala ang katapusan ng mundo.

Pagpasok ko sa entrada ng sinehan, nagulat ako sa nakita sa may snack bar. Si Maji! At may kasama siya--hindi ang kanyang tita--kundi isang lalaki. Nakaakbay pa ito sa kanya. Shocked ako pero ganunpaman, gusto kong ipaalam sa kanya na nandoon ako at nahuli ko siya. Pero di man lamang s'ya nagulat nang makita ako.

Relaxed s'ya at nakangiti pang sinabi sa 'kin: "Tapos na ang lahat sa atin."

"Ha?"

Di na 'ko nakapagsalita. Gusto kong magalit sa kanya. Gusto kong sapakin ang lalaki. Gusto kong umiyak.

Pero kinimkim ko ang lahat ng aking naramdaman at sinabing "Wala akong magagawa...basta kung saan ka masaya.."

Tumalikod ako agad at pumasok sa loob ng sinehan. Doon ko ibinuhos ang lahat ng pinigilan kong lumabas sa aking mga mata. Komedi ang palabas at nagtatawanan ang mga tao sa paligid ko ngunit ako nama'y abala sa pagdadrama sa aking kinauupuan.

Natapos ang pelikula na di ko naintindihan ang istorya. Wala ako sa sarili hanggang sa pag-uwi ko sa boarding house. Kinabukasan, nagdesisyon akong umuwi sa probinsiya namin upang makalimot.

Mataas ang araw noon at mainit ang biyahe, pero wala pa ring tigil ang ulan at bagyo sa aking mga mata. Mabigat pa sa aking mga bagahe ang dinadala ko sa aking dibdib. Kahit na wala pa kaming isang taon ni Maji, masakit pa rin sa 'kin ang nangyari dahil mahal ko talaga s'ya.

Di pa man nakakalabas ng Maynila ang bus na aking sinasakyan, bigla kong naisip na bumaba. Wala nang silbi pang mabuhay kaya naisip kong magpakamatay na lang. Inakyat ko ang isang billboard ng GMA7 kung saan nakalarawan dito ang final 14 ng Starstruck. Dream, believe, survive.

"Kagaguhan!" sabi ko. "Tingnan ko lang kung makaka-survive pa 'ko pag tumalon ako mula rito... maliban na lang kung may pipigil."

Pero wala ngang pumigil. Dahil walang nagmamalasakit. Walang nagmamahal. Tumalon ako.

" Aaaahhh...blag!"

Nabagok ang aking ulo sa gulong ng trak ng MMDA na sa mga oras na 'yon ay nagsasagawa ng wet flag scheme. Hindi naman ako namatay. Wala lang akong maalala pagbangon ko.

"Sino ako? Anong ginagawa ko rito?" tanong ko sa sarili ko.

Nagka-amnesia ako. Mula noon ay nagpalaboy-laboy ako sa lansangan. Sa ilalim ng overpass ako natutulog at doo'y madalas na ka-jamming ko ang mga taong-grasa at mga rugby boys. Namalimos ako sa daan, papunas-punas ng mga sapatos ng pasahero ng jeep, o kaya'y humihingi ng 'love offering' sa mga pasahero ng bus.

Umasenso naman ako hanggang sa makapagtinda na 'ko ng fishball, squidball, at kwek-kwek. Kung anu-anong trabaho ang pinasukan ko para lang may maipanlaman sa kumukulo kong tiyan. Nagbenta rin ako ng mga pirated na CD, VCD, at DVD. Pero di pa rin sapat ang kinikita ko sa pagbebenta ng mga produkto kaya ibenenta ko na rin pati ang aking sariling laman. Nagpagamit ako sa kung sinu-sinong bakla at mga matrona. Kumita ako ng malaki.

Subalit sadyang malupit sa akin ang tadhana dahil sa isang iglap ay nawala lahat ng aking pinaghirapan. Nadukot ang wallet ko nang makipagsiksikan ako sa libing ni FPJ. Nalungkot akong lubha at nawalan ng pag-asang makabangon pang muli.

Nang biglang tumunog ang cellphone ko. May nag- text. Sabi sa message, ang Oracle daw ang tanging makapagbabalik sa aking alaala.

Nag-reply ako: hu u?

Pero di na s'ya nag-text back. Di ko alam kung saan ko hahanapin si Oracle. Nilibot ko ang kamaynilaan. Ipina-blotter sa pulis. Ngunit kahit anino ni Oracle o ni Madam Auring ay di ko nakita. Naisip kong baka wala s'ya sa siyudad kaya pumunta ako sa mga probinsiya.

Nakarating ako sa kabundukan ng Quezon Province pero mga illegal loggers lang ang nadatnan ko. Nilisan ko ang lugar na 'yon at sa pagbaba ko ng bundok, nasalubong ko ang mga nagtatakbuhang... hobbits! -- sina Frodo, Samwise, Merry, Pippin, at si... Dagul yata ang pangalan ng isa. Hinahabol daw sila, hindi ng mga ringwraiths kundi mga.. battle droids ng Starwars!

"Huh?! Ano 'to?!! Nasa'n ba ako?!!!"

Sa sobrang lito ay nakitakbo na rin ako. Napakaraming kalaban. Libo-libong droids. Kakampi pa yata nila ang mga robot sa I, Robot. Mabuti na lang at dumating ang mga astig na superheroes: sina Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Daredevil, Blade, Van Helsing, Elektra, X-Men, Charlie's Angels, Powerpuff Girls, the Incredibles, Voltes V, Mulawin, Capt. Barbell, Darna, Volta, Krystala, Lastikman, Panday, Andres Bonifacio...marami pang iba.

Madaling natalo ang mga kalaban. Subalit... sugatan si Frodo. May tama siya. At may iniabot siya sa akin --isang singsing! May elvish inscriptions dito na sa tingin ko'y hindi kayang i-decode kahit ni Dan Brown. Pero bago pa man malagutan ng hininga si Frodo, nasabi niya sa akin ang kahulugan ng nakasulat:

"God will never leave you empty. He will replace everything you lost. If He asks you to put something down, it's because He wants you to pick up something better and best for you." Inilagay ko ang singsing sa bulsa ng aking pantalon at nangakong iingatan ko iyon.

Samantala, nagdiwang ang mga superheroes sa pagtatagumpay. Gumimik sila sa Libis at nag-inuman. Sasama sana ako pero sabi ko kailangan kong umuwi ng bahay dahil ending na ng Lovers in Paris. Pero naalala ko na may amnesia pala ako at di ko alam kung saan ako nakatira kaya sumama na rin ako.

Habang nagdi-disco ang Justice League kasama ang Marvel superheroes, nagtugtugan at nagkantahan naman ang mga anime' heroes. Panalo sa Japan! May ledge dancing pa sina Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Black Mamba, at Sailor Moon! Pero di rin kami nagtagal sa lugar na 'yon. May nagyaya kasi na pumunta sa Baywalk dahil may show daw doon ang The Bodies. Ang saya-saya! Idagdag mo na lang si Kuya Germs, kahit wala nang tulugan!

Subalit naudlot ang kasayahang iyon nang biglang lumindol... at mula sa Manila Bay ay dumating ang isang dambuhalang... TSUNAMI!!! Swooossshhh!!! Naitaboy ang mga superheroes. Hindi nakayanan ng kanilang powers na pigilin ang dumating na sakuna. Mabilis na bumaha ang paligid at nalunod kaming lahat. Oo, pati sina Aquaman, Marina, at Nemo.

Patay kaming lahat. Dumilim ang kapaligiran. Katahimikan.

"Gising! Gising!" Isang tinig ng lalaki ang narinig ko.

Pagdilat ko, nakita ko ang isang lalaki. "May tiket na po ba kayo? Sa'n po kayo bababa?"

"Huh?!" nagulat ako.

Kunduktor pala iyon ng bus. Panaginip lang pala ang lahat! Nasa bus pa pala ako at pauwi ng probinsiya.

"Sa Tarlac po," sabi ko sa kanya pero ang mga mata ko'y nakatitig sa kanyang t-shirt na may nakasulat na "the Oracle".

Parang narinig ko pa si Morpheus na bumubulong: "Welcome to the real world..."

Buhay pa ako. May pamilya at mga kaibigang nagmamahal sa akin. May tirahang nauuwian, may magandang hanapbuhay, at... virgin pa 'ko!

Habang nasa biyahe, naisip ko, napakababaw na dahilan pala ang iwan ka ng boyfriend o girlfriend mo para magpakamatay ka. I have to stand up and move on. Lalaki ako at di dapat ako maging mahina. Di dapat ako maging tanga para sa isang gaga at walang kwentang babae. Naisip ko rin na mabuti na rin ang nangyari at nakilala ko nang maaga ang tunay niyang kulay bago pa man humaba ang relasyon namin. Hindi siya ang karapat-dapat sa akin.

Nasa gate na'ko ng aming bahay nang may tumawag sa aking pangalan. Si Rizi, kababata ko, kapitbahay namin. Sabi niya umalis daw ang lahat ng tao sa bahay namin at iniwan sa kanya ang susi. Nang abutin ko ang susi sa kanya, doon ko lang s'ya nakaharap nang malapitan at doon ko rin lang napansin na maganda pala siya.

Matapos akong magpasalamat ay sinuklian n'ya 'ko ng isang matamis na ngiti. (Cue: new Coca-cola theme song)

Pagpasok sa bahay, diretso agad ako sa banyo upang makapaghilamos. Maginaw sa loob ng banyo at malamig ang tubig. Pero may naramdaman akong mainit na bagay sa bulsa ng aking pantalon.

Dinukot ko ito at nakita ko ang isang... singsing.

All Taxis Should Be Like This

I was so irate the other day when I hailed taxicabs to take me and my wife (and about 12 bags of groceries) home. After four cabs that just zoomed past us, one finally stopped. As the driver scrolled down the window at the passenger side, I asked him to take us to our village – and to use the meter. He disagreed and quoted an exorbitant fare instead. After a few more haggles, I slammed the door shut and told my wife to hail a jeepney instead. It was difficult and inconvenient, but this ever-reliable public transport finally brought us home.

They should really do something about these taxicabs in this country. Stricter rules in meter usage, as well as more security features for passengers, should be implemented for the benefit of simple commuters like you and me.

And then I came across a website describing Amos Tamam and his taxi service innovations with his Verifone Transportation Systems. Wow! Every taxi should have one of these. The technology allowed passengers to pay via credit or debit cards. This innovative payment system, developed by Amos Tamam and his team, provides wireless credit card payment solutions, PIN-based debit cards, and even has a contactless payments system. The system also has a Global Positioning System and a Passenger Information Monitor that provides real-time information for passengers.

This system would make payments quite convenient, and accurate, for commuters. On top of top, there would be no need to bring cash for fare, providing more security for passengers and avoid being victimized by holdups while taking a cab.

In The Beginning

The Way of the Commuter.

This is a journal of my experiences as a commuter. Riding a bus, the Metro, a jeepney, a tricycle or even a pedicab, I notice peculiar behavior from people from all walks of life. This is an attempt to document these observations and share my experiences to other souls who are threading the same Way.

I'll start it off with a song from my compilation "Childhood Dreams". It was originally written in the vernacular but I would later try to attempt a translation and share this to other Wayfarers from around the world.

BINTANA

sa loob ng kwarto, nakatayo ako…
nakadungaw sa bintana, kunot ang noo….
nag-iisip…. nag-iisip… bakit kaya?
oras-oras, gano’n pa rin ang aking nakikita….

gusaling nagtataasan, ilaw na kay gandang tingnan…
mga kotseng pang-mayaman…
dyipning pang-mamamayan…..
nagtataka… nagtataka… ano kaya?
bakit nagkakawalay, bakit nagkakaiba?

dumungaw ka sa bintana, ganun pa rin ang makikita…
isang pagtataka ang sasalubong sa mata…
kailan magbabago, ang bayan nating ito?
ang Diyos, ikaw at ako…. ang kasagutan

barong-barong kay mang juan…
condo naman kay mr. john….
si kulas nasa kalsada, si chris ay nasa eskwela
nalilito… nalilito… sadya nga ba?
anong pagkakaiba’t naging ganito ang sistema?

dumungaw ka sa bintana, ganun pa rin ang makikita…
isang pagtataka ang sasalubong sa mata…
kailan magbabago, ang bayan nating ito?
ang Diyos, ikaw at ako…. ang kasagutan…

dumungaw ka sa bintana, kumilos na sa nakikita…
buksan mong mga mata mo…
upang makita’ng katotohanang ito….
pag-asa ng bayang ito… ang ating pagbabago
ang Diyos, ikaw at ako…. ang kasagutan
