The Way of the Metagamer

Bob buys the Dungeons and Dragons book off eBay. Hilarity ensues. Plot follows. Also tropes. Lots and lots of tropes. Also no fourth wall. Actually, it's mostly about the lack of fourth wall. We probably should have mentioned that bit right at the top. Actually, yeah, move that to the top- you're writing this LIVE?

Bob: What the hell was that? The comic just *stopped* for over a month!
Trope-tan: No, seriously, did you just get here?

Hiatus-tan: Oh, I did that. The break there. That was me.
Xavius: You unintentionally made *another* hiatus?
Hiatus-tan: Nope, that one was deliberate.

Xavius: Uh. Didn't you say it was involuntary?
Hiatus-tan: This one was necessary. If the comic sticks to schedule for long enough, Continuum-tan's gonna show up.
And trust me. She never stops being annoying.

Bob: You do realise it's equally annoying not to update for over a month?
Hiatus-tan: And you are very welcome.

Jane: Hey, Trope-tan? Why is the plot going nowhere?
Trope-tan: Since I have no idea what to do.
I explained the problems there three comics ago.

Jane: Right, but why not just show that video?
Trope-tan: Video?
Jane: The one that we found in the cardboard apocalypse shelter.
Trope-tan: Shelter?

Jane: The one that we were about to play immediately before the Author died.
Trope-tan: Author?
Jane: The one that showed up as ASCII art.

Trope-tan: Oh, right! That's because I don't know what's on it.
Jane: Aren't you omniscient, though?
Trope-tan: Yes!

Trope-tan: I'm everything. All that once was and all that will be.
I control time and space, love and death.

Trope-tan: I can see into your mind. I can see into your *soul*.
Jane: … really, you can do all that?
Trope-tan: No!

Jane: So you're *not* omniscient?
Trope-tan: No, I am. I have all the powers. All of 'em.
What I don't have is the mental acuity needed to make use of the powers.
Jane: Huh?

Trope-tan: I'm definitely omniscient right now. Every single thing that has ever been known or that ever will be known is in my head.
Jane: But?

Trope-tan: Put simply, there's not that much room in my head. Even considering that I'm a Mary Sue.
I do know everything, but I can't focus on everything at once.

Trope-tan: In fact, it's hard to focus on anything at all, when there's so much *to* focus on.
I have about as much chance of keeping to a coherent plotline as *Primer* has of making sense.

Jane: I understood that perfectly on first viewing.
Trope-tan: Fine. As much chance as *Evangelion* has of making sense.

Jane: Jeez. Good thing that doesn't affect our regular Author.
Trope-tan: Actually, I'm pretty sure it does.
Jane: … that explains an awful lot.

There's literally nothing else we can do to advance the story, so let's check those out.

Bob: So, what, are we an askblog now?
Trope-tan: Don't be ridiculous. We're catgirls.

Xavius: First up, a whole lot of questions from The Chessmaster.
Uh. A "whole lot of questions" is a phrase which here means "three questions".

The Chessmaster: Then again, does Annabelle still exist? Does the ARTIFACT still exist? Hmm…
Trope-tan: Yes, Annabelle still exists. She was at the second Party, remember?
The Rod also still exists. Neither of them are important enough to the plot to be visible, however.

The Chessmaster: More to the point, is Trope-tan really going to be careless enough to follow this suggestion considering that it means a superweapon is dropped right into the lap of someone who's quite possibly evil (Xavius, that is)?
Trope-tan: No, I'm not.
Xavius: I'm hurt.
Trope-tan: Tough.

Xavius: Next, the magic anon from last week points out that Bob and George, from *Bob and George*, are both human and yet can use that time machine.
Trope-tan: Excellent point.

???: bob AND george could use it and there human.
Trope-tan: They *are* human but also spend the entire comic wearing robot suits, which are compatible with the Rush Adapter. We don't have robot suits.

Bob: And you can't summon robot suits with your omnipotence, why?
Trope-tan: Because shut up.

Xavius: Right, so we couldn't change anything anyway.
Except… didn't the Author show you how to turn off predestination? At the Party?
Trope-tan: Well, yes.

Trope-tan: But even so, we can't travel back in time very far. Since the art style changes.
We couldn't get far enough back to undo all this mess.

Xavius: Wait, why? Is there some fundamental metaphysical law that makes it impossible to time-travel across art styles?
Trope-tan: No, they'll just kind of clash.

Bob: Can you seriously not fix *any* of these problems? Even though you're *omnipotent*?
Trope-tan: Pretty much, yeah.

Trope-tan: Oh hey.
Bob: What'd you do that for? Is that supposed to magically fix everything?
Trope-tan: I didn't do that.

Trope-tan: It's a Rush Adapter, converted for temporal inversions.
I think it's from *Bob and George*. One of the readers brought it here in the comments.
Xavius: And you're supposed to use it to fix the past?

Trope-tan: Yeah, except that doesn't sound very possible.
Nearly all the time travel in *Bob and George* eventually resolved to stable time loops, so the same predestination problems would apply.

Trope-tan: Also, none of us are robots. This was not planned well.
Or planned at all. 'cause I'd already written half the comic when that comment showed up.
This is not the second half of comic I intended.
We're just standing around talking!
Trope-tan: … are you new here?

Bob: You. Why aren't you making stuff happen with your oh-so-limitlessly powerful powers?
Why is this-as-made-by-you such a pile of nothing?

Trope-tan: Well, the comic itself underwent total narrativium collapse over three years ago.
We consequently had to evacuate for reasons of apocalypse.
Bob: I know. I was there for that.

Trope-tan: Which means the main storyline hasn't even been *touched upon* for over three years.
Bob: Oh. Yeah. That's true.
Trope-tan: The last event that could even be indirectly construed as advancement of the main plot happened about two-and-a-half years ago.

Trope-tan: Furthermore, we're technically still caught in the middle of some other apocalypse that seems to be a *Majora's Mask* reference.
But nobody even remembers that by now after all these author switches and junk.
And for the last three comics, you've literally been asking the-comic-not-updating why the comic hasn't been updating.

Trope-tan: And then of course there's another tiny problem. The Author's *dead*.
There is literally no way to move forward from this point.

Xavius: I know it seems impossible; we've been thrown off our track.

Bob: But if we can't move forward, why shouldn't we move back?
Trope-tan: Predestination.
Bob: God *damnit*.
Why *did* you make an eighteen-month gap in the comic schedule?
That's… that's a pretty excessive gap.

Hiatus-tan: Oh. Right. My powers are kind of involuntary. Like Rogue.
Xavius: Wait, so at any second you could accidentally rupture one of my lungs?

Hiatus-tan: No, no, I've got to be touching the thing. Also like Rogue.
The comic schedule is basically omnipresent, so it counts as me always touching it.

Xavius: I never understood why Rogue wasn't more capable, really.
If Magneto attacks you, just *jump on him*. Bam, no more magnetism powers.
Bob: Wait up.

Bob: You're constantly opening hiatuses in omnipresent things?
Hiatus-tan: Yes.
Bob: *All* omnipresent things?
Hiatus-tan: Yes.

Bob: Bad writing?
Hiatus-tan: Yeppers.
Bob: Overreliance on self-deprecation?
Hiatus-tan: Absolutely.

Bob: Plot?
Hiatus-tan: Trick question. There isn't one.
Bob: Oh, right. So you're not constantly making holes in it, then?
Because that would have explained a *lot*.
That's… not supposed to happen?

Bob: How did you even get here?
Xavius: Wait, how did *you* even get here?
Bob: I withdraw my question.

Xavius: Hi. So how do your personification powers work?
Hiatus-tan: Well, inc-

Hiatus-tan: Hang on. You were pestering Wikipe-tan about her powers earlier.
Why are you suddenly so interested in this stuff, anyway?
Xavius: No idea. Probably some sort of clumsy, ill-defined character development.

Hiatus-tan: Right.
Xavius: So, yeah. How do they work?
Hiatus-tan: Inconsistently.
Xavius: Of course.

Hiatus-tan: Basically, I make gaps in stuff. All stuff.
Schedules, strata, vital internal organs…
Xavius: Handy. Also, creepy.

Hiatus-tan: But I *also* don't do anything. My powers are kind of… conflicting?
It's a daily struggle. Or would be, if I ever actually bothered to struggle with it.

Xavius: Can you… fill in gaps in stuff, too?
Hiatus-tan: Ugh, no. That's Continuum-tan's power, and she *never stops* bragging about it.
Hiatus-tan: 'cause the comic doesn't get updated. Obviously.

Bob: I meant specifically. Our current sarcastic-quotation-marks "author" needed you to be in the comic. But you're not *doing* anything.
You basically disappeared entirely, after being in, what, five panels?

Bob: Up until right now, I guess.
Point still stands. What're you supposed to be doing?
Hiatus-tan: You really don't get me at all, huh?

Bob: Hiatuses.
Hiatus-tan: Hiatuses.
Hiatus-tan: In other words, the personification of *not doing stuff*.
If I were doing anything, that'd be absurdly counterintuitive.

Hiatus-tan: Anyway, I'm already doing the thing I do.
Bob: (quietly) But you *just said* you don't do anything.
Hiatus-tan: Notice how there were no comics for eighteen months? Yeah.

Bob: Wait, that was you?
Hiatus-tan: Was it a hiatus?
Bob: Well, yes, but-
Hiatus-tan: Then *yeah*, I'm pretty sure it was me.

Bob: Huh. I guess I was assuming the comic was just abandoned because the writing's bland and all the characters are identical cardboard cutouts.
Hiatus-tan: Little from column A, little from column B.
That must be wildly inconvenient.
Wikipe-tan: It really is. [citation needed]
… see?

Fred: I fail to see how this is a problem.
You're omnipotent. Can't be that hard to write a requite.
Trope-tan: No. I most definitely *cannot* do that.

Wikipe-tan: I can't even really know that not knowing things is unhelpful. [citation needed]
Xavius: And, wait, you *also* can't know that you can't know that?

Trope-tan: I'm omnipotent, yes. I *can* do anything, because that's what "omnipotent" means.
But I mustn't. These are author powers; they must only be used to advance the plot.
Jane: But there isn't a plot.
Trope-tan: Precisely.

Xavius: How exactly does this work, though? Under what conditions does the restriction apply?
Wikipe-tan: I've no idea.
Xavius: Not an inkling?
Wikipe-tan: None whatsoever.

Trope-tan: With great powers must come great responsibility.
Jane: So… with omnipotent powers must come omnipotent responsibility, by induction?
Trope-tan: I'm not sure it's transitive, but otherwise yes.

Xavius: You haven't experimented? To see what counts as stuff you can know, and what doesn't?
Wikipe-tan: No. Because that would be *original research*.

Jane: You didn't build the time machine for personal gain; you built the time machine to travel through time?
Trope-tan: Absolute power must only be applied when absolutely required. And for cheap tricks.
You love talking about *Discworld*.
Trope-tan: I do love talking about *Discworld*.
It's, well…

Wikipe-tan: Alright. "an excellently executed technique indeed". Got it.
May you be considered a scholarly source?
Xavius: Well, I'm a public figure, so statements I make should be citable. I think.

Fred: It's well?
Trope-tan: I am going to tell you both a secret. I'm quite sure you fully understand the conditions involved in upholding the holy covenant of secret-keeping.
Jane: Naturally. Go on.

Wikipe-tan: A public figure?
Xavius: Yes. To be more precise, a superhero. … but I'm not supposed to be revealing that because secret identity.
Whoops.

Trope-tan: I… I appear to have developed a degree of romantic attraction towards Wikipe-tan.
Fred: That seems wholly unsurprising, and, given hindsight, was entirely evident the whole time.

Xavius: Could you perhaps *not* tell the entire human population about this, despite your nature as the repository of all worldly knowledge?
Wikipe-tan: Of course. I actually *can't* tell anyone[1].
You told me yourself[2]. It's original research.

Trope-tan: Just don't tell anyone, okay?
Jane: You kind of just told the entire Internet.
Trope-tan: … frak.

Xavius: Oh. The original research thing.
Wikipe-tan: Yes.
Xavius: Does it… does it mean that you can only ever know things that *other people know first*?
Wikipe-tan: *Yes*.
You were meant to show up in the previous comic.
Hiatus-tan: Eh. Later.
I am busy looking at pictures of cats with opinions.

Trope-tan: But I put in the lightning effect and everything. Please?
Hiatus-tan: Ugh. *Fine*.

Hiatus-tan: Why did you not reveal my identity last comic?
Trope-tan: To accommodate audience speculation. Duh.

Hiatus-tan: Hi.
Bob: Oh you are freaking kidding me.
The comic has a personification of *not being updated* now.
Hiatus-tan: Yes. Problem?

Bob: I think this was already rather well-established, but just to emphasise the point:
I. Hate. This. Comic.
Fred: Funny. That's almost exactly the reaction most readers have to it.
Jane: What a bizarre coincidence.

Wikipe-tan: The history of the clacks network was detailed in *Going Postal*: specifically, the concept was devised by *Robert Dearheart*[1].
Xavius: But didn't *The Fifth Elephant* suggest that the clacks system had existed for centuries?
Wikipe-tan: True, it did[2]. That is arguably justified by time's being shattered in *Thief of Time*[3].
Trope-tan: Right, so now Hiatus-tan is here, we can… get on… with… um.

Trope-tan: H-hi, Wikipe-tan.
Wikipe-tan: Greetings… again[4]?
In any case, that generalised justification could be considered acceptable.

Xavius: It bothers me that every single *Discworld* flaw is explained simply by "the History Monks did it".
Wikipe-tan: This explanation is ingrained into the setting in a way some have described as "highly effective"[5], however.
Xavius: Oh, quite. 'tis an excellently executed technique indeed.
Wikipe-tan: May I quote you on that?
Unfortunately, there is no HTTP status code 240, so that plan did not go so well." width="735" height="2217" />
Trope-tan: And so commences comic number two hundred and forty!
The first panel opens up with a statement of the comic number, which is closely followed by a description of the first panel's content!
Fred: Visually, the panel features imagery of Trope-tan and Fred Phillips, both appearing as catgirls and in the art style of the Touhou fanwork entitled create.swf.
Also, walls of text.

Bob: This isn't clever meta. This is just stupid meta.
Trope-tan: … said Bob as the second panel started, characteristic of his complete inability to enjoy anything fun.

Bob: This isn't even fun. It's only recursive.
Trope-tan: Bob was subsequently removed from the rest of the comic for not liking recursion!
Because how can anyone not like recursion?

Trope-tan: So, we enter the fourth panel of page two hundred and forty!
Xavius: Why are you so excited about this being page two hundred and forty?
It's not really a milestone or anything.
Trope-tan: Oh, but it is!

Trope-tan: 240 is a highly composite number! Fact!
Jane: That means it has more divisors than any preceding number!
Trope-tan: Indeed it does! It has twenty of them, to be precise!

Trope-tan: That also makes it a refactorable number! Fact!
Fred: That means that its count of divisors, in this case twenty (as previously noted), is itself a divisor!
Trope-tan: Correct!

Trope-tan: 240 is also a pronic number! Fact!
Xavius: That's because it can be expressed as the product of two consecutive integers!
Trope-tan: Precisely! Fifteen and sixteen!

Trope-tan: And it's divisible by the sum of its digits (six!), so-
Jane: - that makes it a Harshad number!
Trope-tan: Indeed!
Wait, how do you guys know all this stuff about 240? You're not omniscient; not at present, anyway.

Fred: Oh, we asked Wikipe-tan.

Trope-tan: Uh… h-hi, Wikipe-tan.
Wikipe-tan: Salutations. A pleasure to meet once more, *Trope-tan*.
Trope-tan: Um.

Wikipe-tan: To address the first *query* you haven't actually made, I'm here because you referenced me[1] in the previous *comic*[2].
Trope-tan: Um, right.

Trope-tan: Tho, um, I'm kinda… omnipotent, now?
Wikipe-tan: My congratulations.
Trope-tan: Yeah.

Wikipe-tan: … line?
Trope-tan: Oh, it'th… um, right. E-ecthcuthe me a moment.

Trope-tan: You are meant to be in this comic too.
Mysteriously Unidentified Character: Yeah, yeah. Just give me another month or so?
FACT." width="769" height="1367" />
Fred: Now that you're not flipping out about the relative height of your eyes, what are your thoughts on this new development?
Bob: It's awful. All of it. Entirely awful.
There is no word in the English language to describe just how awful it is.

Trope-tan: I become increasingly convinced that if one looked up "intolerable" in the dictionary, there would be a picture of you there.
Bob: … no, there wouldn't. Dictionaries don't work that way.
Trope-tan: True, but wouldn't it be awesome if they did?

Bob: Um, not really?
Trope-tan: No, think about it.
If dictionaries worked like that, you could look up "surgeon", and there would be a picture of a surgeon.
And then you could go hire the surgeon in the picture as your surgeon.

Trope-tan: Or you could look up "plumber" to find a picture of a plumber if you need some plumbing done.
Fred: Or you could look up "heroic" and you'd get someone, y'know, heroic.
Trope-tan: Or you could look up "allergic" if, um, you needed to test some antihistamines?

Jane: So, if your president got kidnapped by ninjas, you'd look up "bad" in the dictionary-
Trope-tan: - and see a picture of me so you'd get me to rescue your president!
Jane: … sure.

Xavius: Wouldn't there be lots of legal issues with releasing such a dictionary?
Fred: Oh, indubitably. The reaction from the guy whose picture is under "jerk", for example.
Jane: The problem of slander is significant in developing this concept.

Fred: Doesn't slander only apply to speech? If it's written I think it's called libel.
Jane: But it's not written, either. It's a picture.
Trope-tan: Libel covers images too. Other Wiki says so.

Bob: There are already things that do this. They are called *phone books*.
Xavius: Ah, but phone books don't provide definitions of words!
Bob: … no, I suppose they don't.
