Hempie Chef here – Boy do I have an opinion on this subject!

First off I live in Far Northern California – where we have thousands of acres of unspoiled beautiful public land! Rivers, lakes and streams abound! Deer, bear, fox, rabbits and all kinds of creatures run around on these public lands. It truely is nothing like being in the more populated areas of California.

Anyway – growing pot on public lands implies an “illegal” grow! No matter how you look at it!

In the state of California if you are a 215 recommended patient or state registered caregiver you are allowed to grow “legally” in your own backyard! How crazy is that? Not only that if you don’t have a recommendation possession of less than an ounce is a misdemeanor … I love California’s laws!

27 different agencies from Colusa, Glenn, Lake, Mendocino, Tehanma, and Trinity Counties came together to first identiy and then destroy grows on public lands! These grows on public lands are “illegal” … with 8 out of 10 times “illegal” immigrants are tending the illegal grow … and 10 out of 10 times these tenders are armed and ready to shoot – because what they are doing is illegal! These “garden tenders” also divert water from streams and rivers in order to water their “gardens” … and these tenders use chemicals that get back into our public streams and rivers eventually making it into our water supply – contaminating everything between the garden and our water!

So, I full support raids on marijuana gardens that are on public lands!!

So if you have a recommendation or caregivers card … grow your madical marijuana in your own backyard and stay off of public lands!

The annual High Times Cannabis Cup is a must for every cannabis lover in the world as it presents awards to the very best the cannabis community has to offer. This year was the best yet with 5 days of sampling, testing and tasting coming down to the big vote and results on the final day. Here are the important results for the 23rd Cannabis Cup:

Cannabis Cup Winner:

Barney’s Coffeeshop – Tangerine Dream

Barney’s Coffeeshop is based in Haarlemmerstraat in Amsterdam and has a number of Cannabis Cup winners in the past. The win saw them beating Green House Unlimited – Super Lemon Haze into second place and Green Place – L.A. Cheese into third. Tangerine Dream is mostly sativa, 70-74 days of flowering and is a rare cross between G13 and Neville’s A5 Haze.

“…this is an honour, an honour like nothing in my life, this is an honour and I am humbled before you…” – Derry – Barney’s Coffeeshop.

He used his speech to make an impassioned thank you to all the coffee shop owners for being upfront and continuing to sell cannabis. He has the whole crowd shout “freedom” to make a point that this award and competition is all about freedom.

Barney’s Farm and Barney’s Coffee shop, not only won the main prize, they also won the Nederhash cup for Tangerine Nectar Iceolator, beating Green House United – Green House Ice into second and Grey Area – Grey Crystal into third. They also won the Import Hash Cup with Caramella Cream with Green House United – Rif Cream second and Green Place – Twilza third.

With Barney’s Farm also winning the Expo Booth award for the best display at the Cannabis Cup and best product for Barney’s Bud Scope, they pretty much cleaned up.

Weed World has a huge selection of Barney’s Farm Cannabis Seeds available right now in packs of 10 for regular seeds or packs of 5 or 10 for feminized seeds. You could try:

Barney’s Farm G13 Haze (Feminized)

This strain is in the vain as their new Cannabis Cup winning Tangerine Dream and will give you an idea of why they were successful. This mainly sativa strain has a flowering period of 70-80 days and can be picked up for as little as £40.80.

In a surprising moment of clarity, far-right minister and television mogul Pat Robertson came out in favor of softening America’s drug laws:

I’m not exactly for the use of drugs, don’t get me wrong, but I just believe that criminalizing marijuana, criminalizing the possession of a few ounces of pot, that kinda thing it’s just, it’s costing us a fortune and it’s ruining young people. Young people go into prisons, they go in as youths and they come out as hardened criminals. That’s not a good thing.

We’d say, “welcome to the fold,” but this is the same guy who blamed 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina on gay people, so we’ll settle for, “even a broken clock is right twice a day.”

What’s most notable about Robertson’s statement is the change in atmosphere that it signals. Until very recently, it was almost unheard of for a prominent commentator on the right or left to speak plainly about the disastrous effects of the war on drugs. (Robertson also attacked the “tough on crime” politics of the 80′s, which he blames for America’s overpopulated prisons; a surprising admission from such a Reagan devotee.)

But something has changed. Outgoing California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger recently said on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, “Nobody cares if you smoke a joint or not.” Last summer, Sarah Palin called marijuana a “minimal problem,” while stopping short of endorsing legalization. And last fall, the Wall Street Journal reported that some Democratic Party strategists were “studying a California marijuana-legalization initiative to see if similar ballot measures could energize young, liberal voters in swing states for the 2012 presidential election.” When politicians see political gain in an issue, you can bet they will find a way to use it to their benefit.

There is a lot to be said about what all this means for the future, and almost all of it is positive. The prospects for reforming America’s cannabis laws have never looked so good, with almost half of Americans saying they support legalization in the most recent Gallup poll. Politicians are finally beginning to take notice, whcih is the first step. Legalization advocates have always known that the facts were on our side, but until this past year, the media gatekeepers who decree what is “acceptable” discourse have stymied all efforts to bring those facts to the public. Now that big-name politicians and commentators are beginning to speak up, some space has been opened to discuss these issues rationally.

So light one up with us for a bright new year in the fight to free the weed!

After yet another whirlwind of a year, Weed World are finally glad to see the festive season well and truely arrived. With what looks like the most snow we’ve ever incurred at WWHQ (at least 1.5 foot) and more to come, its time to kick back and finally enjoy the fruits of this years labour. To add, more seeds have been sold this year than ever before. Meaning that all you amazing people are responsible for not only helping to spread the word, but the healing, medicinal energy that these seeds pertain……and this is exactly what we need. We’ve also been to all four corners of the globe this year to catch up with our brothers and sisters within the ever increasing behemoth that is our Cannabis Community…..Some of the countries we visited included Jamaica, California, Spain and Holland to name but a few. So many exciting ideas, decicions and prospects are coming to fruition right now as we break for the new year…..from cutting edge strains from our friends in the Emerald Seed Company, incredible genetic breakthroughs in Autoflowering Strains and groundbreaking technology in Led Grow Lights. We can only imagine what 2011 will bring!!!

So without further a do we’d like to thank everybody out there who has made this year a success, from those who contributed and bought the magazine, bought stuff from our website and shared your love and knowledge for all things weed related. Thanks a million, You know who you are.

So wether your still after some nice ICE KUSH, tasty HAWAIIAN SNOW, some AUTOMATIC SANTA, WHITE DWARF or even a dash of SNOWBERRY? We’ve got all the strains to satisfy your festive needs. And remember…….to tell your friends, your brothers, sisters and most importantly your mum, about the benefits of cannabis and most impotantly the health benefits of reading WeedWorld.

Thank You and May You All Have a Very Merry Stoned Christmas!!!

Serious Seeds have been regarded by many as the greatest seed bank to ever grace this earth, and 16 years on, owner Simon is not only promoting the female releases of his classic strains but is deep into the testing phase of a new strain altogether…

The Serious 6!

This is exciting news for all followers of Serious, since these people will already know that the Serious catalogue only consists of 5 strains! These five strains are amongst the elite, since Simon has dedicated his career into not only stabilizing these 5 strains but also testing them again and again, constantly releasing seeds with more stable genetics. This means that back in 1994 when these strains were first available, they will have been the first batch of seeds produced. Now in 2010, the seeds which are on sale have been tested, re-selected and fully stabilized, having sixteen years of experience. This is also another fact that many people will not know, and once again only goes to show the depth of which Simon goes to, in order to ensure the highest quality seeds. This also shows how particular Simon is, and if a certain seed or a strain is not good enough, he will simply have no intention of releasing it… hence the delay on the Serious 6!

With the recent buzz surrounding serious seeds; the release of the AK-47, White Russian & Chronic in female versions, 1st place prizes (in the Sativa cup) from the first hemp medical fair, and with talk of this new strain, we decided it was about time to catch up with Simon to find out more…

Q

Now Simon, one of the reasons that you are highly respected is due to the fact that not only are you a scientist but more so that you do not regularly smoke cannabis. How then, did you start your journey into the wonderful world of Marijuana?

All right, let’s start by saying that I was 25 when I smoked cannabis for the first time. I’ve never smoked tobacco in my life, and as a consequence, also never smoked pot because in the Netherlands we have a terrible culture of mixing cannabis with tobacco. I say ‘terrible’ because there is nothing good about mixing the two. Practically all people who learned to enjoy cannabis this way cannot quit the habit of mixing pot with tobacco. Anyway, it never crossed my mind to try cannabis because I was a non-smoker.

This changed when I was offered a joint of pure cannabis. At the time I was 25, and in Africa studying. Since I always liked the scent of hash being smoked around me, I tried it and really enjoyed it! This was the start of a change in my life. I spent period of 7 months in Africa, in which I sought out and found some of the best weed in the continent. As a biologist it was natural for me to keep seeds of the best samples of dagga (weed in southern Africa). Once I returned, I started to grow those seeds and found it is possible to grow your own weed to smoke! What started out of interest soon became a hobby, which in turn grew into a profession. This was way before HPS lights or grow shops existed, a time where you had to find out how to do everything yourself. Of course it was handy having some education and knowledge about plants.

Q

Tell us more about Serious Seeds. What were you trying to achieve when starting the business?

We were trying to be a reliable source of seeds used in order to grow top quality cannabis, and I honestly feel that we have lived up to it. My philosophy is almost too simple, to be real! I believe in treating the customer how I myself, would like to be treated. That is the foundation of all our principals, the very being of Serious Seeds.

Well I myself agree and hold Serious to be the best seed company in the world! People from different places are able to witness for themselves the quality of the strains.

Q

So Simon, we’re intrigued with the fact that you keep only five strains in your catalogue. Can you shed any insight on this?

Well, Serious Seeds is all about what I would prefer if I myself was a customer. I wouldn’t like to have a wide choice between mediocre strains and end up being disappointed. I would rather see varieties like famous perfumes or rare liquors. If something is good, it will remain that way and people will continue to like it. I don’t see how cannabis should be like fashion; this season everybody wants to grow a certain variety but the next year nobody is interested.

It is not so easy to produce something which is not only different but also really good, and which also has enough quality to stay popular. We are constantly growing and testing, selecting new crosses. If I am not 100% enthusiastic about something new, it won’t make it to our stables. Often people tell me I’m too idealistic, that I should think more commercially and produce more strains because that’s what customers want (or so they say!). Well, I know that we make our customers wait for years but in the end, the wait is more than worth it. People are generally more grateful when we finally do come out with a new seed that it is different and really great as opposed to coming out every year with a new name that doesn’t live up to it’s expectations.

Q

Many seed companies follow the capitalistic strategy of coming out with something NEW all the time…

Isn’t that what we see everywhere in society? We are brainwashed with being told what needs to be done in order to stay successful. That may be so but I simply want no part of that.

Q

Serious Seeds strains are known for their high levels of THC. Is this the most desirable trait when experimenting?

Not anymore!!! When I started Serious Seeds it certainly was but we have reached and surpassed that goal. Other characteristics have taken over in importance. Things like taste, odour and the total effect of the weed. This includes THC but not that alone; it is the total effect of the combination of cannabinoids and terpenes which makes the weed stand out.

Q

Now Simon, the moment we’ve all been waiting for …… The release of a new strain; The Serious 6!!! Tell us everything!!

The Serious 6 was developed as an outdoor strain, but proved to also give a fantastic quality weed indoors. Now we are basically testing several parental combinations to see which is best. We need the outdoor season for this, and can’t start production before those tests are done. Unfortunately we do not expect to have it ready for sale before the end of this year.

At the High Times cannabis cup of Nov. 2009 we introduced the new strain with the name of ‘Serious 6’. During the Cup people could taste it at our booth. As usual we had a ‘Verdamper’ running all the time, still the best vaporizer on the market in my opinion. The crowd was invited to ‘Get Vaped’ at our booth; meaning to try some of hot new ‘Serious 6’ by means of the vaporizer.

In my mind there was one type of seed still lacking and it would be a great contribution to Serious’ menu if we would come out with a variety which would really be early finishing outdoors. For a couple of years we’ve been working on such a variety which combines early finishing outdoors, with an outstanding quality and a delicious flavor. It should finish before the end of September in the Netherlands. Combining those characteristics was our goal. And if this is good for the Dutch climate it will do well in many countries with similar weather patterns, like the UK for instance.

The ‘Serious 6’ basically is all of the above; an early outdoor variety which on top of that can also be grown with great results indoors. However, the seeds of this new strain which we had ready for sale at the Cannabis Cup were not sold there at all. The final tests which were concluded shortly before the Cannabis Cup event, showed that some female plants grew a few male pollen sacs (often called ‘bananas’) during the final stages of flowering. These small yellow structures are actually parts of the male flower, and in cannabis it is not uncommon to see these tiny ‘bananas’ between the mass of female flowers which form the actual bud, during the final stages of flowering. And although there was no actual pollen release, it was to me a sign to stop the release of the ‘Serious 6’ seeds and throw it back into the trail phase. A great pity, but we have very strict rules when it comes to plants which show tendencies to herm; those are killed without remorse. The idea behind this is that if we already see banana’s then other growers with less favourable conditions might actually see open male flowers, releasing pollen resulting in unwanted seeds in their buds. Not good!

Although there was no actual pollen release from these male flower parts at all, we followed our strict rules and destroyed that batch of seeds of the ‘Serious 6’. To all of our customers who have been waiting for this new Serious’ variety we apologize for the extra delay caused by all this.

Now it is our hope to have new ‘Serious 6’ seeds available for the public at the end of this, or at the beginning of the new year. But, off course, it will again be the positive results of tests which will ultimately switch the light to green. Only when new tests show that the seeds perform up to our standards the ‘Serious 6’ will be released for sale.

We have at this moment several seeds from new parental combinations of the ‘Serious 6’ growing outside. The outcome of these tests will be crucial before we will start the production of our sixth’ variety. (More precise info on the release of new feminized seeds, or the Serious 6 should be given on the website of Serious Seeds, under ‘NEWS’. The Serious Forum was and is the place where up to date info on growing and possible new releases can always be obtained.)

The legalisation of cannabis has been a big issue for a very long time, but with so many new countries relaxing their cannabis prohibition laws for various reasons, it begs the question: Who’s next?

In a bid to boost tourism and to stamp out the problems associated with black market Cannabis trading in the region, The Marianas Islands has passed a bill through parliament legalising cannabis. The group of islands in the pacific between, Japan, Philippines and Indonesia, which is the northern most section of a larger group of islands called Micronesia, has passed the bill, despite pressure from the U.S. which provides $10 million dollars in aid to the islands. This is because the Marianas Islands fall under the jurisdiction of the U.S.

Despite the U.S. threatening to withdraw their financial aid to the area, the Marianas Islands have passed the bill, meaning that cannabis is now legal on the islands. With so much unemployment in the area, the opportunity to attract many tourists to the region was a no brainer. Also, with the black market cannabis trade doing so well, passing the bill will be a good thing for citizens, government and authorities alike.

Many pro cannabis groups in the wider Australasian area have heralded this as a fantastic move by the islands and hope that other governments and voters in the region will follow suit and help to build up a prohibition free zone. With this news it is predicted that tourism to the area could improve rapidly with people seeking a place to enjoy their herb of choice.

There is a large backing for the legalisation of cannabis in the region already in places like Australia and New Zealand. Australian cannabis laws vary from state to state with possession, use and supply all legal in some regions while in some regions there are civil penalties for minor cannabis related offenses. Some countries even still restrict the purchase of Cannabis Seeds. In New Zealand, where it is illegal to possess cannabis, they have just passed a law approving the use of marijuana for medical purposes. Cannabis is the most prevalent drug used in New Zealand and this move to legalise medicinal cannabis has been widely supported.

The cannabis available on prescription in New Zealand is reportedly grown in the UK, soaked in alcohol and taken via a spray under the tongue or another popular and safe method for the intake of medicinal marijuana with the use of a vaporizer.

With the legalisation appearing on ballots and propositions around the world of late, and with the economic conditions the way they are at the moment, you’ve got to wonder how long it is until more and more countries see sense?

Do you think cannabis will ever be legalised in your country? If so how will it benefit you and your situation?
