'Target'ing the Customer

I read an interesting article today that made me stop and think. How often do you get targeted coupons in your mail – online or off? I bet it is a lot. Well, what would you think if your daughter started getting coupons for baby products from Target and you did not know she was pregnant? Like the father in this article, I would be angry. Terrifyingly enough, however, when he confronted his daughter he found out that she was, indeed, pregnant. But how did Target find out before her father did? Did she inform them? No. It is even creepier and more stalker-ish than that.

Target targeted her buying habits. Through tracking her buying habits and comparing it to a matrix they created by tracking millions of other shopper’s buying habits, Target has acquired the ability to track who is expecting a child before they ever start buying diapers. No sign up sheet or registration is required. Target just knows and wants to attract those that are about to make the major purchases that come along with a new baby.

What do the new moms to be think of this targeted marketing strategy? Well, they think it is more than a little off putting. After many failed attempts and angry customers, Target has started to throw in a more eclectic mix so that the mom’s do not feel singled out. It apparently works.

Frankly, I find such tracking and projection disturbing. I mean, I am all for getting coupons based on what I buy. That is fine. That is why I use my discount card. But getting coupons based on what I might buy in the future, especially something so private, is just wrong.

Who Can See Your Mental Health Records? The Answer May Surprise You

Electronic medical records sounded like a great idea when the idea first began to take hold. Electronic records would streamline medical care and allow your oral surgeon to see what medications your heart doctor had prescribed, eliminating drug interactions and doctor shopping. Insurance companies and hospitals would benefit from clear and concise records that could be accessed any time from any medical facility within your network. No one predicted that the reality would be your gynecologist having full access to your psychotherapy records.

The issue of whether all your doctors should have unlimited access to medical records that ordinarily cannot be shared with anyone except under a court order was a hot topic at the recent Health Privacy Summit. Many practitioners, especially mental health specialists, expressed their concerns about who has access to therapy notes that are entered into electronic health records. In most cases, the answer is virtually any other doctor you see from that moment forward. Every doctor within your health system can access your records and legally read them.

You would expect such an invasion of the traditional bond of confidentiality between a patient and therapist to be a violation of HIPAA, the health privacy act. However, a loophole in HIPAA actually allows this breach, rather than preventing it.

For independent mental health specialists, the solution may be to avoid electronic records altogether and stick to more easily-controlled paper files. Unfortunately, for those professionals who work for clinics or hospitals, or who are a part of health networks, such decisions may not be theirs to make. As these systems make electronic medical records mandatory, therapists are losing control over their patients' records.

As with many privacy issues, electronic medical records solutions are elusive. One possible answer would be for hospitals and health care systems to begin allowing therapists and psychiatrists to create electronic medical records but keep them separately from the patient's other medical records.

According to experts, large health care systems have little incentive to allow this, however. Having everything together in one file makes it easier to bill insurers and simplifies record-keeping. If patients want to make sure their mental health records remain confidential, they must see to it that the HIPAA loophole is closed or find a way to make sure the large corporations behind their healthcare providers have an incentive to guard patients' privacy.

In Kenya, Mobile Banking Takes Off

In Kenya, the use of debit and credit cards is taking a back seat to money transfers via cell phone. Increasingly, Kenyan financial institutions allow customers to move money between accounts and from institution to institution and even to apply for instant loans via their mobile devices.

As major players in the Kenyan telecommunications market continue to work with international as well as regional financial institutions to allow Kenyans to use their cell phones the way they would ordinarily use debit cards online and at bricks-and-mortar businesses, the Central Bank of Kenya announced that mobile money services surpassed credit and debit card use in the third quarter of 2011.

Cell phones have become personal banking tellers, with 80 percent of new cell phone service subscribers opting to add money transfer services to their phone plans. This amounts to 1.02 million new money-service users, bringing the total number of people who use their cell phones to conduct financial transactions to 18.4 million. With figures like these, it would likely be in the best interests of financial institutions to offer free cell phones with every new account.

According to the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK), convenience and ease of use is behind the rise in mobile banking. “Continued growth is an indication of subscribers’ preference for mobile money transfer, which could be attributed to accessibility and affordability even to low-income earners,” the CCK stated in its third-quarter report on the financial industry.

Cell-phone users increased the number of deposits they made by nearly six percent during the third quarter alone, and the amount deposited grew by nearly 60 percent from the same time a year earlier. Financial service companies continue to rush to establish partnerships with cell phone providers, fueling expectations that deposits will continue to increase dramatically again in the near future.

Restaurant Owner Had Ties To N. Korean Diplomat

Cubby’s Barbeque, owned by Robert Egan, in Hackensack, New Jersey is not only famous for their delicious barbeque. They are also popular for entertaining famous people from time to time. Owner, Robert Egan has spent the last decade selling his popular barbeque foods to some very important people. One very important person who enjoyed the delicious food from Cubby’s was Pyongyang’s former diplomat, Kim Jong-il who died December 17, 2011.

Hanging on the wall of this popular barbeque restaurant are many photographs of Egan and Jong-il. By sharing good food from the barbecue smokers, it helped to gain trust between the two countries on a lower level and an unending friendship between the restaurant owner and the North Korean diplomats. These photographs bring two lives together; the life that Bobby Egan lives as an unofficial diplomat to the United Nations and the Cubby BBQ restaurant.

Beginning in the 1970s, Bobby Egan has been on a search and rescue mission for prisoners of war and soldiers who have been missing in action in North Korea and Vietnam. Inventing unofficial group names to help give him access to North Korea easier, has helped him to become friendlier with diplomats. By sharing his talents of food through his restaurant with these diplomats, it helped him to gain information to help send POW’s home to their families.

Through entertaining the foreign diplomats of North Korea, Egan formed a bond and friendship that helped him to gain access to the foreign lands. Every meal the North Korean diplomats ate was free. This ensured that they would continue to come back to the Cubby Restaurant each time they visited the United States.

Although many people believe that entertaining foreign diplomats is an act of decency, other’s view it as bribery for information. North Korean authorities claim that there is some doubt of any relationship between Jong-il and Egan at all. Some even go as far to claim that the foreign diplomats only saw it as a free meal. However, by sharing these wonderful meals from his restaurant, Egan was able to gain trust and friendship from Kim Jong-il and other North Korean diplomats.

According to the American government, Robert Egan was not part of their efforts to release any POW’s from North Korea or Vietnam. Sources are unsure whether there was any connection between Egan and the United States Intelligence agency. Egan has not been to North Korea in five years. He hopes someday to be appointed by the President to be an ambassador to North Korea and open a Cubby’s Restaurant in Pyongyang right next to the U.S. Embassy.

Disparity Of Health Amongst Young Americans

A recent study of health disparity in America was conducted by a group of professors from University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Duke and Ohio State University.

The lead researcher, Hui Zheng, a sociology professor from Ohio State University claims that this study is "one of the most comprehensive pictures ever of health disparities" thanks in part to the to the advancement of medical technology .

However, the current disparity of America's younger generations is a quite large and will only get bigger according to the study. Zheng explains that as younger generations grow older, "health disparities in the whole population will grow even larger."

Young American adults under the age of 30 are finding themselves with a more varied level of health problems when compared to previous generations. The study shows that as this generation of people age their health disparity will only get higher until they become senior citizens when gap will become smaller.

As the baby boomers reach retirement age and beyond, this generation of young Americans will find that their range in healthy to unhealthy people will only grow over the next twenty years according to the study.

Zheng also suggests that the gap between the healthy and the poor of health will only increase with future generations. Disparity in health is a relatively new find in America at least up to the baby boomer generation. A study of people born in the first half of the 19th century will find a smaller gap in differences of health in the population. This new generation of Americans are finding quite the opposite result.

The results were found using including age, birth date and when the level of health was determined using surveys conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics from 1984-2007. They used these factors to create two sets of statistics that showed the differences in health over generations.

Zheng claims that this new study was the first time researchers have been able to "how see how each [factor] interacts with the others to affect changes in health disparities."

The survey asked people to rate their health on a scale of one to five, with five being the highest. Even though this is not a medical conclusive report, Zheng finds that this type of survey provides a better indicator then a more professional opinion. The statistics also included many other determining factors such as economic background, race, gender etc.

While the research does not explain the disparity in younger generations, there are many factors that can be concluded as to the reason. There is a large difference in income between socio economic levels. Also, the increase in foreign peoples entering the country can also account for the disparity in health. This is also not to mention the increasing awareness of unhealthy and overweight young Americans.

As a result, young Americans born after 1980 will only increase the disparity of health in their generation. The population will continue to see a rise in the levels of healthy to the unhealthy as they these Americans age. The disparity will only drop when people reach a substantially mature age when the human body as a whole becomes weaker with age. It also should be noted the Medicare and pharmacy access may be a reason for the decline in disparity because of better access to health care as a whole.

Zheng explains that this new way of conducting research can be applied to studying any other types of disparity in society because the it "provides a powerful framework to identify and study the evolution of inequalities" in various determining factors from age to education.

This study of health disparity in Americans can be found in the December 2011 American Sociological Review for a comprehensive list and results found.

The video you are about to watch is truly one of the most bizarre YouTube videos I have seen in a long, long time. It is reportedly of a very weird aliens creature that was found in Indonesia. This creature has supposedly has the body of a snake, blonde hair and the face of a human. This bizarre alien creature was killed and displayed for villagers to view.

The first question that needs to be asked is this: Is this thing a fake?

That is a very real possibility.

There are just way too many people trying to fake things on the Internet these days.

Unless some real scientific testing is done on this thing we might not ever know. But then we wouldn't be able to rely on any government to give us straight answers about this creature anyway.

Sadly, we may never learn the real truth about this creature. All we can do is examine the evidence at hand and come up with our own opinions.

How can you tell when you are in a room, restroom, motel etc with a mirror or a 2-way glass?

Here's how: I thought it was quite interesting! And I know in about 30 seconds you're going to do what I did and find the nearest mirror.

Do you know how to determine if a mirror is 2-way or not? A policewoman who travels all over the US and gives seminars and techniques for businesswomen passed this on.

When we visit toilets, bathrooms, hotel rooms, changing rooms, etc., how many of you know for sure that the seemingly ordinary mirror hanging on the wall is a real mirror, or actually a 2-way mirror (i.e. they can see you, but you can't see them)? There have been many cases of people installing 2-way mirrors in female changing rooms . It is very difficult to
positively identify the surface by looking at it.

So, how do we determine with any amount of certainty what type of mirror we are looking at?

Just conduct this simple test: Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective surface and if there is a GAP between your fingernail and the image of the nail, then it is GENUINE mirror. However, if your fingernail DIRECTLY TOUCHES the image of your nail, then

BEWARE! IT IS A 2-WAY MIRROR!

"No Space, Leave the Place" So remember, every time you see a mirror, do the "fingernail test." It doesn't cost you anything.

Nicholas Cage, who changed his own surname from Coppola to Cage in honour of Marvel Comics character Luke Cage, named his child Kal-El after Superman’s original birth name.

Jason Lee – Pilot Inspektor

Jason Lee is known to be a funny man. The star of comedies such as Mallrats, Clerks II and My Name is Earl, Jason decided to impart some of his humour onto his child’s name – Pilot Inspektor. Why “Pilot”? Because Jason apparently heard a song by indie rock band Granddaddy called “He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot”.

Bob Geldof & Paula Yates – Fifi Trixibelle

Irish singer, songwriter and political activist Geldof named his daughter Fifi after his aunt, while the second part of their child’s name was inspired by her late mother Paula’s fascination with the lifestyles of southern belles.

Chris Martin & Gwyneth Paltrow – Apple

Coldplay frontman and Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow had their first child, Apple Blythe Alison Martin, on May 14, 2004. Apparently one of Martin's bandmates already had a daughter named Apple, and the couple asked to 'borrow' the name. However, Grover is displayed upside down in the Google logo. Is this a subtle sign of disrespect for Grover? There have been whispers of a conspiracy against Grover for years. We all know that Elmo was a ripoff of Grover, and that as the "cult of Elmo" took off, Elmo's supporters increasingly looked at Grover with disdain.
