As we mark this anniversary, we honor a nation that survived. We remember the poets, scholars, and families who passed the language down when acts of parliament tried to take it away. History is defined not just by what a king decreed, but by what the people refused to let go.
]]>In the sixteenth century, Henry VIII was obsessed with centralizing power. He viewed the diverse legal systems across the realm as administrative hurdles. At the time, Wales was divided between the Principality and various Marcher Lordships, which operated as private territories with local laws. The Act of 1536 sought to resolve this by imposing English common law, replacing the ancient Laws of Hywel Dda. It divided Wales into shires and granted Welsh representatives seats in the English Parliament. Though these changes offered technical equality, the cost was the systematic suppression of Welsh culture.
The most controversial aspect of the 1536 Act was its stance on language. Section 20 mandated English as the sole language of the courts and barred Welsh speakers from holding public office unless they learned English. This was a profound blow to a nation where Welsh was the primary vehicle for law, art, and daily life. By elevating English, the crown effectively labeled the native tongue a badge of inferiority.
This policy created a deep social divide. The gentry adopted English to maintain status, while the majority of the population remained Welsh-speaking and increasingly marginalized. It set a precedent for centuries of struggle where Welsh was treated as a subaltern tongue in its own land. However, the language did not vanish. It became a symbol of resistance, strengthening the resolve of those determined to keep the ancient tongue alive.
By the nineteenth century, Wales experienced a massive cultural revival. A growing Welsh-language press fed the hearts and minds of the people despite official legal marginalization. One monument to this resilience is the Gwyddoniadur Cymreig, or the Encyclopaedia Cambrensis. Published by Thomas Gee and edited by John Parry, this ten-volume set covered science, theology, and history entirely in Welsh. It proved that the language was a vibrant, intellectual tool capable of containing the sum of human knowledge.

]]>I think we can all agree that winter can be tough. Maybe it’s just me, but this winter has felt particularly long and gloomy. Relentless grey clouds, sudden drops in temperature, and whatever you do - don’t look at the news! Things seem even darker there.

Interestingly, our Welsh ancestors felt exactly the same way, and they had a beautiful tradition to help them through this "in-between" time. It’s called Gŵyl Fair y Canhwyllau (Mary’s Festival of the Candles), and if you haven’t heard of it before, don't worry - you aren't alone!
Known elsewhere as Candlemas, this festival falls on February 2nd. Historically, it marks the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. In the Christian tradition, it was the day all the church candles for the coming year were blessed, but in Wales, it took on a life of its own as a celebration of returning light. Exactly what we need right now, please! 🙏

]]>Long before Valentine’s Day became a global phenomenon, we were celebrating our own patron saint of lovers in Wales: Santes Dwynwen.
Santes Dwynwen is the Welsh patron saint of lovers, and her feast day (Dydd Santes Dwynwen) has been observed in Wales on 25 January for centuries. Devotion to her dates back to the medieval period, long before Valentine’s Day became the commercial, global celebration we recognise today.
While St Valentine himself was an early Christian martyr (3rd century), Valentine’s Day as a widespread romantic tradition didn’t really take hold until the late Middle Ages (thanks largely to poets like Chaucer), and it only became a global phenomenon in the 19th–20th centuries.
Living in the 5th century, Dwynwen was the daughter of King Brychan Brycheiniog and she fell deeply in love with a prince named Maelon. They married in the heat of passion and lived happily ever after… or perhaps they would have if it were not for the fact that her father had already promised her to another.
Maelon, in a fit of rage and rejection, attacked Dwynwen then stormed off in a huff - major red flags, bullet dodged tbh. Heartbroken, Dwynwen fled to the woods and prayed for help. An angel appeared and gave her a potion to forget Maelon, but it accidentally turned him into a block of ice! God then granted Dwynwen three wishes: she wished for Maelon to be thawed and freed from his love for her, for God to look after all true lovers and mend broken hearts, and that she would never marry. She spent the rest of her life as a nun on the beautiful, secluded Ynys Llanddwyn (Llanddwyn Island) helping people with matters of the heart.
Love and marriage has changed a lot over the intervening years: arranged marriage numbers are down and it is vanishingly rare for a memory potion to accidentally freeze a person in ice, especially angel-produced potions. In a world of digital dating, the legend of Dwynwen reminds us of the enduring power of love, sincerity and devotion but also shows cooler heads prevailing over hot hearts, forgiveness and selflessness. All just as relevant in affairs of the heart today as in the 5th century.

This is perhaps Wales’ most famous word, and for good reason. Pronounced kutch, it’s often translated as “hug”, but really, it’s so much more than that.

This summer, WelshGiftShop.com proudly introduced our Preloved and Antique section, created with the goal of reducing waste while sharing beautifully crafted Welsh gifts with customers worldwide. With demand for preloved items continuing to grow, this collection offers a meaningful alternative to buying new—featuring second-hand treasures that have been cherished before, as well as items deeply rooted in Welsh history.
We are delighted to announce that we have recently received a generous donation of hundreds of vintage and antique Welsh books from an avid collector. Many of these titles are long out of print, making them rare finds for readers, historians, linguists and collectors alike. Historically, Welsh books were often printed locally in very small numbers, which means surviving copies are exceptionally scarce today. This donation gives us the chance to preserve and share an important part of Wales’ literary heritage.
Highlights include Cartrefi Cymru, a beautiful historical volume by Sir Owen Morgan Edwards—originally published in 1896—celebrated for its evocative descriptions of notable Welsh homes and their cultural significance. Also featured is Rhys Llwyd y Lleuad (1925) by E. Tegla Davies, often cited as one of the earliest works of Sci-fi fiction in Welsh. Finally, the enigmatic Ofnadwy Ddydd (1966) by Rev. David Griffith Jones is regarded as one of the first Welsh-language novels to portray zombies—depicting the dead rising across Britain in response to a prayer that spirals into grotesque horror!
Alongside this exciting development, we are committed to giving back. We are donating 20% of our profits to Velindre Cancer Centre, a charity very close to our family’s heart. Every purchase made helps us support vital cancer services while also keeping Welsh culture and history alive.

]]>Though later works such as Islwyn Ffowc Elis’s Wythnos yng Nghymru Fydd (1957) are often viewed as foundational in modern Welsh-language science fiction, Rhys Llwyd y Lleuad arguably predates them by decades and occupies a pioneering position in Welsh speculative fiction. One blogger even termed it the first “space‑book” in Welsh, noting how Davies introduced scientific ideas through folklore-like narrative and childlike wonder.
E. Tegla Davies was a Wesleyan minister and prolific Welsh-language writer known for children’s books, novels, essays, and satire. He published over 40 books and was an influential figure in 20th‑century Welsh letters. While best known for works like Gŵr Pen y Bryn (1923), Rhys Llwyd y Lleuad stands as his only known sci‑fi title.

In the mid-19th century, Wales was experiencing cultural and linguistic pressure, with fears that the Welsh language would disappear. Seeking a place where their culture could thrive, a group of Welsh settlers decided to start a new life overseas. Their dream was to create a Welsh-speaking colony free from Anglicisation and religious oppression in Wales.
In 1865, 153 settlers boarded a ship called the Mimosa and sailed across the Atlantic to Argentina. They landed in Patagonia and founded what became known as Y Wladfa, meaning “The Colony.”

Patagonia’s harsh environment tested the settlers’ resilience. With strong winds, drought, and limited resources, survival was far from easy. The Welsh worked with the indigenous Tehuelche people, who taught them essential skills. Through hard work, they built irrigation canals, farmed the land, and established communities along the Chubut River.
Today, the Welsh heritage in Patagonia is still very much alive, especially in towns like:

The legend of Dwynwen is a very sad one. She was a beautiful Celtic princess, the prettiest of all the King of Wales's 24 daughters (Brychan Brycheiniog of Brechon also had 11 sons!) who lived during the 5th century.
Dwynwen was in deeply in love with the handsome Maelon Dafodrill, but her father had already betrothed her to another, so he refused to give them his consent. On finding out, Maelon callously abandoned her. With a broken heart, and grieved to have upset her father, Dwynwen ran to the woods and begged God to make her forget her love for Maelon.
Exhausted and aungished, Dwynwen eventually fell asleep. Whilst dreaming, an angel visited her and left a sweet smelling potion. This would erase all memories of Maelon, and his callous heart would also be cooled, but so much so that he turned to ice. Dwynwen was horrified to find her love frozen solid. She prayed again to God, who answered her prayers by granting her three wishes.
Her first wish was to have Maelon thawed and for him to forget her; her second, to have God look kindly on the hopes and dreams of true lovers whilst mending the broken hearts of the spurned; and her third was for her to never marry, but to devote the remainder of her life to God, as thanks for saving Maelon.
Dwynwen later became a nun and settled on Ynys Llanddwyn - a small island off the west coast of Anglesey in north Wales. She found a church there, remains of which can still be seen today. After her death she was declared the Welsh Patron Saint of Lovers and ever since, Welsh lovers have looked to St Dwynwen for her help in courting their true love, or for forgetting a false one.
Her most well known saying is “Nothing wins hearts like cheerfulness”

It is loosely based on the true story of the Welsh heroine Jemima Nicholas (also known as also known as Jemima Fawr), who bravely marched to meet the French when they invaded Fishguard in 1797. She was 47 years old, and lived until she was 82!

]]>Sheep farming and wool spinning has long been the backbone of Wales, even predating the history books. The first record of mills producing blankets dates back to the 12th century, when Cistercian monasteries were established in South Wales. In the early 16th century, the industry spread to also include Mid and North Wales, and in the 17th century, Welsh blankets were being exported across the world due to their strength and durability.
The Welsh Blanket trade has long been one of the most important industries in Wales, literally weaved into Welsh life and culture. However, the mills almost disappeared completely due to competition from mills in North England during the Industrial Revolution of the 19th Century. They struggled to keep up with the new equipment and began to decline significantly. At its height, there were over three hundred woollen mills in Wales, but now there are only a few working mills left.
One of which is Rock Mill, which is now the only surviving water-driven wool mill in Wales. It is nestled deep in the Teifi Valley near Llandysul, and has been run by the Morgan family for generations. We are proud to support the mill and sell these beautiful blankets - each made from 100% wool with an intricate reversible weave. Which colour is your favourite?
