Adam Roberts and Therapeutic Wines!

Adam’s wine situation started with getting to judge a wine writing contest for the James Beard awards—before he even knew anything about wine. He never let himself spend too much on a bottle to save his pennies for high quality food, but knows where to find good bottles in Los Angeles!

He explains his new podcast, which uses what a person has for lunch to have a therapy session—food unlocks life!

I honor of Ellen’s birthday they get into a bottle of her birth year Sauternes by Chateau de Fargues aka d’Yquem junior! It’s an astounding dessert wine from Bordeaux made with botrytized grapes.

They all, in the words of David “love this juice”.

Prairie Rose and Cocktail Wines

Prairie specializes in cocktails but she actually got her start in the wine world—she’s a trained sommelier. She loves nerding out on it all! They get into the ins and outs of studying it, and wonder why everyone is so intimidated by it.

Prairie talks about the components of a cocktail—a base, an acid and a sweet are the elements of a perfect cocktail. And garnishes are important!

They also play What’s in the Glass? but get distracted by discussing the stress of wine press trips, Cyndi Lauper drama, the meaning of Prairie’s blog, and making plans for visiting Temecula. And plans for Prairie and Ellen to intimidate an enemy customer of Shaughn—watch out world!

Alain Jeu and Truly French Wines!

This week the pod comes to you from the French onion soup scented air of Oriel, their guest Alain Jeu’s restaurant in Chinatown. Before jumping into the interview Shaughn and Ellen read the results of their first boozey homework assignment. Find out what bizarre drinks the other listeners are drinking!

Alain’s wine situation starts very differently, and much later than many. He rebelled by not drinking which worked in his favor when dating the ladies: parents loved him. He started drinking not until he was in California, but he pours a French wine for Shaughn and Ellen, the Thierry Richoux Irancy Bourgogne Pinot Noir. It’s a great thing for drinking all night long.

He recounts learning English on the job, and the culture shock of seeing, in America, all the things he did not think of as “French” things—then gives his recipe for pain perdu, aka French toast.

He has no desire to go back to France, beyond for visiting family in the Loire valley where everyone takes turns hosting dinners. His brother brings the wines and he brings treats from the States like granola and Trader Joe’s snacks.

He applies all he knows to his winemaking and they all taste two of his new releases under the name of LA Wine, a Petaluma Gap Chardonnay and a Russian River Valley Syrah. Domaine Anderson & Wine Making Wine!

This week Shaughn and Ellen welcome Darrin Low, the winemaker behind Domaine Anderson to learn his situation with wine and taste his wines!

Waiting for Darrin to arrive they contemplate sabering Champagne and how they are someday going to lose their saber virginity.

Once Darrin arrives they dive into a bevy of beverages beginning with the 2011 Roederer Estate L'Ermitage Brut. Cheers-ing out of the way, Darrin talks about growing up in a family with a wine shop in wine country, working harvest and falling in love with wine. He then studied wine in college and Bordeaux.

They discuss having a feeling for wine and the difference between French and California winemaking.

They get into the magic of Healdsberg and what will happen when Anderson Valley becomes more of a hub. Seriousness aside they jump into more of the wines that Darrin brought: 2013 Domaine Anderson Estate Pinot Noir, the village level wine. Ellen declares it goth pinot. They also sample the 2015 Estate Chardonnay (Burgandy-esque!) and 2016 Chardonnay (so different and also amazing!) and the 2015 Pinot Noir, all whilst discussing the merits/demerits of organic/natural wine. They then crack open an unusual wine from San Benito: Harrington Siletto Vineyard Corvina! It is a red...or is it a rosé? It is an unusual grape to be grown in California!

David and Winston get into their life in food, and how they feel about wine. Neither one is sold on wine when they could be drinking beer, but Winston is obsessed with the film "Somm" so change is afoot. And David astutely smelled notes of watermelon jolly rancher on the wine. They spoke the wine language!

The evening culminated with a tasting of Malort, the maligned/beloved bitter Chicago amaro. One of the crew loves it...

Scheherezade Daftery and Cooking Up Wine!

Scheherezade Daftery, writer/owner of The Delightful Table blog and cooking school joins Shaughn and Ellen to get into her food and wine situation!

But first, the Grape of Thrones is Riesling. Don't turn it down because you "don't like sweet wine". Because a) there are a lot of good sweet wines and b) Riesling is not always sweet!

Shaughn and Ellen brought Scheherezade the 2015 Alvaro Palacios Priorat 'Les Terrasses' Laderas de Pizarra in homage to Scheherezade's Spanish heritage! Her heritage is in fact how she got into cooking--how else could she readily get Persian food and Spanish cooking? Getting veggies from a CSA sparked her blog and passion for sustainability!

Scheherezade got into wine via a friend from abroad. They taught her how to truly enjoy wine--with a cookie! So of course the crew decides to eat some of Shaughn's bread with the brew. From the feast the conversation gets into everything from Kalimotxo cocktails to Opus One.

Elena kicks the drinking off with their 2015 Syrah, "Exert". It is ever so juicilicious, as is the story of how Elena and Stanley got started in wine. It was a major switch of careers for them. The job includes drinking sure, but they get hands (and feet) on!

Elena also brought the 2016 "Exert" GSM blend. She claimed it still had bottle-shock but it impressed, even at its infancy. Even Zig got in on it. Discussions of how it will age involve acid and caramel. Drugs and sugar. Good stuff.

The crew get into the ups and downs of being a food writer--from what makes him like a restaurant, to getting recognized, to what he drinks with a meal. Farley compares his work to being the sports reporter of Los Angeles food: he's giving a play by play, not a review. Plus he shares some LA food history!

Dustin Lancaster & Tardy Wines!

They pair Dustin's whine about tardiness with a wine that is from a region that was late to the party: Valle de Guadalupe! They are drinking the 2016 Bodegas Henri Lurton "Le Chenin" from Mexico. It's a major step up from the Charles Shaw Dustin and Shaughn once sipped as college roommates.

They get into how to deal with the perpetually late--better to tell them an earlier time or just be late yourself? Also, can a Los Angeleno really blame traffic for lateness when there will ALWAYS be traffic?

They get more into the wine itself--it is made with some interesting techniques by a winemaker who hails from a second cru chateau in Margaux!

Megan's whine is about etiquette at gyms so it is paired with a wine that is lean and strong: 2016 Santo Winery Santorini Assyrtiko! This Greek wine from a volcanic island is dry and bitter but the alcohol comes out to arm wrestle.

Her whines start with her hot yoga studio. Should one put up with a fire alarm and keep on tree posing? Is one riddled with enough toxins to do so? Megan recently was faced with this question.

They all confess their workout styles: Megan teaches kids Zumba, Shaughn shows off lifting or runs the Grand Canyon, and Ellen either pliés at ballet or uses youtube workouts.

The wine is fascinating, and the crew gets into how dangerous the Santorini climate can be and the wild way they train the grape vines to deal with the wind. The wine is well-hydrated. What does that mean? Tune in to find out.

Then, H Michael gets into his beef. He loves his mom but dang--why does she always keep trying to inspire him to having a wife and kids?

Shaughn and Ellen pair it with a wine that was started by a man who worked by himself. They are sipping the 2016 Bedrock Old Vine Zinfandel. The owner started it and worked by himself for six years before taking on a partner!

Shaughn and Ellen concur the H Michael needs neither the "perfect partner" nor wine knowledge. Nor a home, but the recession is coming so no worries for anyone!

First though they tackle their Grape of the Week/Grapes of Thrones: Viognier.

Johnny reveals that he goes nuts when things are not where they are supposed to be. He tends to be staring right at things that he thinks are missing, so Shaughn and Ellen pair his whine with a wine found where you wouldn't expect it to be: in a can! They are drinking The White Queen, a canned Chardonnay from Sonoma.

They get into some technical wine terms like "malo" and "tannins". Turns out Johnny likes a white wine! He also likes a good rye whiskey.

Johnny tells some riveting tales of double-stick tape that remains at large. Shaughn, Ellen and Johnny decide to consult the Universe, which never answers, sadly.

They discuss their frequently misplaced items. Ellen can't hold on to tiny measuring cups. Johnny loses scissors. Shaughn loses his wine key.

The most important take-home lesson from the episode is that when in doubt, just say "It's Miller Time".

As for her whine, Erin started noticing that when she met Insta-celebrities in real life they were not all how they pretend to be--not nearly as witty or airbrushed. She also discovered there were services out there that will manage your Instagram image for you from color schemes to curating hashtags. The layers of Instagram Inception go on...

They would love the wine-eratti to believe they are drinking orange wine, but the truth is they are basic Campari bitches. It's orange, at least, but bitter and delicious, especially with a bit of soda. Campari Spritz, anyone?

Shaughn and Ellen pair it with a wine that gets no respect: Merlot! They are drinking a 2015 Chateau Godeau Ducarpe Sainte-Emilion Grand Cru! That's a damn fine Merlot.

They explain the complex ranking system of wines in Bordeaux. It ain't as easy as A, B, C!

The history of Madeira is complex and fascinating and Shaughn and Ellen break down the origins of this almost-a-dessert fortified wine. At a 20% alcohol by volume it will take away the woes of any day gig!

In between wine facts they discuss the worst day jobs they ever had--alcohol rooms, dogs and hot tubs--let's just say life in LA is wild. Wild enough for Ellen, Shaughn and Jen to break themselves in multiple ways from car accidents to (potentially egg-related) food poisoning.

Shaughn and Ellen strike a power-pose to hold up the man with a plan, the man behind the wine! Gregory Condes the wine importer dugout, joins for more fun wine talk than whines and that is okay.

The hip-sip-tip from Ellen is a Nebbiolo from Mexico. Shaughn hip-sip-tips a holiday coffee specialty from Go Get Em Tiger that is a cross up between toffee nut coffee and cup o' noodles. The hippest, quite possibly.

They take a question from the mailbag as to what a wine aficionado should bring to a party of non-winos that everyone will appreciate. Ellen recommends Ravenswood zin (her go to for everything) and the guest of the day Greg seconds the notion of Zinfandel--it is a wine group hug!

This time the guest brings the wine: a 2014 Dirupi Valtellina Superiore DOCG! AKA a really tasty nebbiolo from Lombardy in Italy. Greg regales Shaughn and Ellen with tales of Faso and Bilba, the guys behind the wine as well as descriptions of the breathtaking beauty of the land.

Ellen's hips sip tip is a 2012 Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Meunier from Oregon. Shaughn's is a 1967 Zinfandel! It beats out Ellen's 2008 Zin for age but the lesson is this: get some old zin!

They whine about how everyone is always trying to play catch-up with everyone and then...nobody catches up.

Shaughn and Ellen explain what a "pet nat" is--a wine bottled before it finishes fermenting. The wine with no follow through!

As always they end up discussing Miraval and Whispering Angel while playing what's in the glass. This wine had hints of blueberry and Yankee Candle.

The conversation veers into weed talk--how to indulge (disposable vapes), who's ordering it on the go (Kelly delivers it!), and all agree smoking cigarettes is really no good. They all make plans to smoke weed and head to the movies for Kelly's podcast.

The lightning round becomes a bizarre game of charades as it covers other terms for petillant naturel, if pet nats can be rosé, what the oldest kind of sparkling wine is, and what the name of their particular bottle's closure is.

The Hip Sip tip from Ellen was an Inteus Rioja Alavesa Tempranillo Blanco she found at DomaineLA. Shaughn had a Ridge Zinfandel from Dry Creek valley which inspired much wine envy.

Alyse's whine was about airport and airline etiquette. Before getting into the whine-appropriate wine(s) Gregory Condes Wines supplied wine to toast to Alyse's upcoming wedding: 2015 Château de Passavant Cremant de Loire.

The whine appropriate wine came from FlyWine, which makes premium wines appropriately sized to take on-board so you can drink like a baller in the air. We tried the "Layover" Russian River Valley Chardonnay and the "Wingman" Napa Red. Spoiler/pun alert: they pass the taste test with flying colors!

While getting thoroughly soaked in booze we got into the whine, with tales of coffee being kicked over by careless passengers and other air flight horrors. Travel pillows are discussed for those of us who just want to sleep through the terror.

Last but least we tried a non-alcoholic wine just to see, and Ellen has a LaCroix revelation.
