Gosh!

Can't believe that I haven't been posting for so long. Well, I was just busy from end of the year with studying for exams, then exams, then summer break, then back home in Malaysia for Chinese New Year, then again back here in Dunedin. Was hunting for a good and cost-effective place to stay in town, then, there was course approval back in Uni. First week of classes, Moving into the new place.....buying textbook...running around doing VISA, IRD application, work training....so on...and so forth.....dont think I should be continueing to report on my life.....LOL!

Goodness me, it was just never ending! - - Wow! And, here I am, the start of another semester. I remember when I just came, I felt like the time would be crawling by but, the fact is, it's just flashing thru and I am worried that another blink of an eye. I'll be out of the university. Sigh! I love studying. God! Can't believe that I'm saying this... Yup! I love studying. Trust me, no way in the world, I'll be saying this 2 years ago.

I was just at the library just now, on a Sunday afternoon doing readings and summarising my notes and I actually like doing it. I didn't felt it was an obligation but, I, myself want to do it for myself.

Sigh! I wondered how many people had forgotten this really simple rule of life. Doing it for yourself! Doing what you enjoy most! Yes, I do know that age comes with obligation but, if you can make that obligations those that you enjoy doing. It's then, no longer an obligation.

Again and again...this statement popped up in my head.

"I can't believe that I am doing Psychology and Sociology"

"I can't believe that I am actually good at this!"

"I can't believe that I actually understand this stuffs"

LOL! How life changes for people, isn't it!

I don't know why but, this song," Moulin Rouge - How wonderful life is" just kept ringing at the back of my head. I can't stop humming it. I know I am not in some love situation but, I do love what I am doing now. I actually felt like screaming, tell everybody that I am enjoying life and tell everybody, I do exist and I am existing for me and no one else.

And, I hope whoever is reading this, You! Ya, You! Would be enjoying and loving life as much as I am now!

This is the first hostel on my recent winter trip around the South Island. Arriving here at night, I have no idea how's the surrounding was like. But, the hostel was really clean, cozy and the staffs are just really nice. For the 1st night, after driving for a few days already. I really wanted some privacy and just a good night sleep, so decided on a private room. And, it was just incredibly nice. YHA Mt. Cook is built in a log cabin style so, it give that sense of coziness and warmth. The private room was just way better than a hotel room. I was just pleased and enjoyed a great night sleep.Waking up was just dreamy for me because once I opened my eyes. I just saw part of Mt. Cook surrounded by pink skies. It's just breathtaking.

Since, I am on a budget, for the second night, I decided to switch to a 4-bunks dorm. And, again, it wasn't a disappointment. Room was great.

Just a Note:

If you are on a tight budget, remember to do your grocery shopping before heading up to Mount Cook, coz everything is just way too expensive.

I am writing this review based on my experience when Purple Cow was still part of BBH.

I would say, the location of this hostel is the main attraction. The hostel is huge with nice lounge and big kitchen. They even have mini kitchen in the 4-bunk dorm.

However, when I was here, the room was kind of smelly. Not sure if it's always like this or because my room was full of boys. Anyway, I would say the crowd is more of youngster from 16-21 years old all heading to ski reosrt at that time. So, expect some noise.

I have to say coming here was because of the name. LOL! Silly...I know..

Anyway, it's not exactly impressive. But, again location was good. They offer FREE SPA (unfortunely, didn't get to try this out because it's always full), and FREE SOUP (which taste pretty good.)

And, it's within walking distance to the glacier hot pools. Love the fireplace but, the heatpump in the room is loud.

Though, no idea why but, the crowds that comes here never clean up the kitchen. So, lots of unwashed plates - YUCK!

Well, the name does give it away already. It's by the beach, of coz. Nice view of the beach and walkable to the famous Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. Great lounge and verandah for you to just chill. I would without doubt recommended this hostel to anyone if you plan to stay for sometime in West Coast. Totally love the place.

Arrived in Karamea pretty late so have no idea where to head to. This is the first sign we saw before turning into the Karamea town. And, we were lucky that they have not close for the day. We stayed at their 4 beds cabin. It was pretty ok. Clean but, it funny that the next day, you only see senior citizen in this place. But, all is good and comfortable.

I would say the prettiest hostel we have been to. It's right next to the Cathedral, and its just one minute walk away from restaurants, shops & bars. Great location. And, they have the best bathroom among all the hostel, I have been to. Although, I have to say the kitchen - the cooking area is just way too small. Oh...they give an hour free wireless internet daily per person. That's just really cool.

It's more like a homestay kind of backpacker. No bunks but, beds. It's really nice and cozy especially if you go in Winter like we did. They have this really neat fireplace in the living area with a fat cat lying around. Very Homey.

It was my last few days of holiday before heading back to Dunedin. So, I kind of spur a tiny bit and got myself a private room which was totally worth it. Really nice, kind of old looking but totally comfortable with street view, which was totally ok. It's located in an old building with its own character which was totally unique. They have huge common area. The kitchen was cool too.

God! 30 is just around the corner! And, I have lots of things that I need to get going. Somehow, I don't feel I am there yet..I mean 30. Sigh! It feel so far yet so near.

Learn Another Language and Speak Proficiently! - Currently, I know English, Malay and a few Chinese Dialects and am adding on to the list. p/s: Got to improve my cantonese!
Overcome my fear of the sea and fish! - Sigh! Unfortunetely I really love the beach and the sea. You know those feeling where you can only see, not touch. I fear the sea and ya....dont laugh...fish too.
SkyDive - This should be pretty visible since I'm here in New Zealand. Finger Crossed!
Bungee Jump - Hmmmm! By hook or by crook..i'm doing this jump!
Go on a camper van trip - I dont know. Seems comfy and you are able to cook in there. LOL!

Learn to Swim! - Probably this would help in my fear of the sea.

Hei..Currently blogging from my email [Mail2Blogger].

Anyway, am going to blog about other use of twitter for me.

I was kind of getting a bit overwhelming on the RSS readers with so many RSS that I'm following. God, everytime I logged in and I feel like............Damn! Where should I start?

So, I decided that I need a better solutions. So, i actually logged on to their site again and check if they have Twitter. If they have, I'll add them but depending on how they tweet. I like those who use it like a notice board and announce their latest post with title and I can decide if I want to read them. If I do, I just follow their link and if, I like it, I'll re-tweet it.That make my life so much simplier coz, I don't even have to logged on to anything. I just check my Twitter Add-ons by Firefox right on my browser window.

And, the other great thing is whoever you are following tend to share what they like to so, you can have a look on what it's all about. It has totally make my life simplier. At least, in reading the feed. Coz, I really don't go over all of it.

Oh, well...it's just me. Maybe, you'll find it differently.

Well, I have recently been asked alot on this question. And, if I am going to pursue what I am studying?

Truthfully, I hope so.

The thing is -- being brought up in Asian culture. It is just hilarious when one responded when I tell them I'm doing Psychology and Sociology.

Let me give you a scenario:

(ASIAN) Person A: So, Nora...what are you studying now?

Me: I'm doing double majors in Psychology and Sociology.

Person A: Psychology? Huh? Really arr? Then, what you want to do after that? Cure orang gila (mentally crazy people), arrrr?

Me: (***Thinking - I think you are the orang gila. Where have you been living all these years?) **Smiling! Well, psychology is not only to treat mentally ill people but, it's a systematic way of studying human behaviour and mental function. There is alot of field I can go into.

Person A: (**Look blurred) Huh! Oh! Really....sound so professional. So, what are you going to do after your psychology?

Me: Well, truthfully, I don't exactly know yet. I just do it because I have always have interest in it and just didnt get around doing it yet. I'll see once I'm done and see what happened.

Person A: Waaaa....but, you not young liaw leh....

Me: (**Duh!! - Still trying hard to sound diplomatic) Hmmmm....Ya, but it's never too late to pursue what you want, rite?

Person A: I guess so. So, what is sociology?

Me: Oh...Sociology is about the study of human societies.

Person A: Huh?

Me: To put it in a simplier explaination: the study on culture, behaviour, country, media, sexuality, law.....and all others.....The field is too broad to explain.

Person A: Huh? (**She crazy or wat?) So, what do u do after you graduate?

Me: Hahahhahaa....Nevermind. The field is really too broad to know what I want to do now. Maybe, NGO. But, I haven't decided which field I'll be focusing in...Maybe psychology or maybe sociology...We'll see..

Person A: Well...ok...Best of Luck (**Hmmmmmm!)

The thing is I really don't know now, what I want to do right after I get my degree. I do hope I can somehow make use of what I have study. But, for the time being. I really have no clear idea. And, it have always been my style to just kind of stumble into things. Don't exactly know if it's a good idea though. Coz, I have been told hundreds of time that one should always know where they are heading to. Sigh! Wish it's that easy. Not everyone is the same. And, so far...I think I have done alrite being just stumble into things. But, we'll see. Probably, I'll really turn out to be one of those big failure in life. But, at least, i took the step in trying to follow for my heart.

My own principle to my life:

To me is to follow my heart,coz it has never once let me down. But, if I follow my head, almost nothing ever work right.

But, it's just me.....We'll see how things turn out.

My Home Cook Claypot [aka Microwave] Chicken Rice

I actually successfully replicate Claypot Chicken Rice without the claypot! hhehhehehe.... And, it's pretty easy.

Damn happy. The taste was almost perfect. Just lacking the salted fish ..though......maybe, next trial...i'll hunt for salted fish... Yummy!

Even the look, also aren't too bad, rite....??

Well...for those who yearn for Claypot Chicken Rice, you can try to replicate my recipe. I didnt even cook it with the rice cooker.

My Claypot Chicken Rice aka Microwave Claypot Chicken Rice Recipe.

For 1-2 person
Ingredients:

About 300g of Breast meat (You can use thigh or whatever you fancy)
Handful of chinese mushrooms, soaked in warm water for 20 minutes
Spring Onions
Lettuce for presentation
1 cup of rice & 1.5 cups of water *(I uses Long Grain Rice, so it's less than 1 cup & 2 cups of water)

To marinate:
2 tbs chinese rice wine
1 tbs sesame oil (if you fancy this stronger, you can put more)
1 tbs dark soya sauce
1 tbs light soya sauce
1 tbs sweet soya sauce

Instruction:

1. Marinate the chicken meat with the sesame oil, chinese rice wine and all the soya sauces as above. Seal it up or put in a close container and leave it in the fridge. [I let it sit for the marinating at least 30 mins]

2. Remove stems from mushrooms & slice it into the size that you fancy.

After 30 mins later, i came down to prepare the rice.

3. I put the rice and the water into a microwaveable bowl. Leave it in the microwave for 10 - 15 mins.

While waiting for the rice to cook. I took out the marinate chicken.

4. I love garlic so, i have some garlic and stir-fry the garlic and the marinated chicken together with just a bit of oil [Important: **Just add the chicken, without the excess marinade sauce**]. Then, add in the mushroom last.
[ You can add more taste if you find it not tasty enough while stir-frying it P/S: I did add a small teaspoon of brown sugar =) ]

5. When the rice is ready, add it your chicken & the mushroom on top of your rice. Then, **add the excess marinade sauce on top. Don't use all coz you want the effect to look like the actual claypot chicken rice where the rice is slightly stain but, not thoroughly.

6. Then, put everything back into the microwave for another 5 mins or so.

7. And, you are done. For presentation, (LOL!) put some lettuce on the bottom of a new plate. Stir your claypot chicken rice and serve. Oh...add the spring onions on top too.

** You can add an egg or salted fish or lap cheong ( Chinese Sausage) if you want.

And, you are done..... Be assure you will impress some friends...

Ya....I am just such a dreamer..and, I hope that it won't be forever be just a dream but, it will in fact come true..

I can't stop it. Everyday since I left high school, all I want to do is to travel. I dream..I hope...I pray....I mesmerize..I breath...I go nuts about the idea of backpacking to around the world. I just want to take that few years of my life and just live the world as it is.

I still couldn't get it out of my head. I am constantly dreaming and wanting that day to come as soon as possible. All I see everyday of my waking hours is my anxious leg, my restless body, my distracted mind, my fiery desire, my crazy self wanting to see me making that move. I need to.

Sigh! Sadly - the fact of life kicks in..Just not yet. Not yet. Not now. I have to be really patience if I am gonna make this work. It will come but, I just got to set my priority right at this moment. My studies would have to come first and then, the travel.

You know how at times, people might say "this is not me" - that is how I feel exactly for many years now especially while I was back working. I just felt trapped. Not knowing who I am anymore. At times, I felt like I being sucked into that life of the norm. Of what the society expect of you and recreating you that is not you.

But, I am happy, trully happy that I have decided to come back and continue my studies. Especially, in pursuing what I really love. And, with all this in mind, I have to consistently remind myself that without Alven, I wont be here. He have always been there to encourage me and pull me out whenever I go into depression. Sometime, I wondered if i havent met you along the way, where would I be today?

I do misses you, Alven! You are always there for me. How can I ever ever know how to repay you?

Sigh!

Today, is just another rainy gloomy day that make me think. Make me wanting to just pack my backpack and go backpacking and see the world.

Waking up 2 hours before my lecture starts typically at noon. So, got to wake up at 10am. Rushing off to the bathroom and down to the kitchen for breakfast or most of the time brunch. Then, off to the Uni. Rushing off lecture to lecture with only about 5-10mins for me to get one place to another place. And, bumping into friends whom I have no chance to talk to becoz I was rushing. Finished classes and off to the library. Day dreaming for an hour. On facebook for another hour. Followed by assignment, readings and at times, when I am really really hard working, preparation reading for the next lecture. Check our Uni. intranet for new notes or announcement. Another 1/2 hour gone on checking email. Reach home usually at 8pm. Dinner done by 9pm. Go upstair...shower............getting distracted for another 1/2 hour to 1 hour.......Lie on my bed....Day dreaming.....Wondering what I have forget to do and reflect on my life, my day, and my past weeks.....and dozing off..... and.............my day starts again........................

Ya....That's my life for the time being. Interesting?! I guess so for the time being....LOL...

My Ideal Typical Day

Waking up to the sound of the sea wave and sea breeze. Have breakfast at the verandah overlooking the sea. When I'm all done, doing some work that is bringing me the income.

(**Still figuring out what job/career that would give me such flexibility). LOL..

Then, lie in my hammock rite in front of my house and read a good book. Daydreaming. Getting up and going for a walk by the beach with my dog. Coming back to a nice cozy home with a fireplace. Nice dinner under the star. Just lying down on the soft white sand with a nice wine and enjoy the sea breeze and .........going back to bed ...appreciating what I have and had in life....

Because I have loved life, I shall have no sorrow to die.

Dreams pass into the reality of action. From the actions stems the dream again; and this interdependence produces the highest form of living.

Ways to Effective Note-Taking

If you are reading this, then welcome to my world. After leaving the academic world for some times, it's really a challenge to go back in and just know what to do.

I have to even learn to write again - writing properly (Grammar & Structure), that's what I mean.

But, one of my biggest challenge is note-taking especially during the lecture. (and, yes...my memory is not as good as back then). And knowing what is important is another issue.

Anyway, after some times of trials and errors............I realised these worked so far...

Be Prepared before the actual class - read thru beforehand - I know...I know...this is not easy but, you just need some discipline...I am still struggling on this point, too.....

Have different Colored Highlighters - I make sure, I know what my color represent
Eg:
RED - VERY VERY IMPORTANT
BLUE - Explaination
GREEN - Author/Writer (Important Names)

and so on...and so forth....I think you get the idea. I highlight along when the lecturer is lecturing.

Listen and Make Short Notes on the Lecture Notes

And, recently I just develop the habit of doing mind-mapping and it seems really effective. If you are not into drawing , then Just google for mindmapping software. There is lots of it that is free and you can work your mindmap from there. It's really cool, in fact.

The point is......................there is really NO Ultimate ONE way in doing note-taking. Everyone has their own style. Find Yours thru Trial and Errors and in no time, you will know wat works and what dont.

Cold Cold Freaking Cold Spring

It's Spring now in New Zealand. But, I have no idea why is so freaking cold. It's actually in fact, colder than winter.

The start of Spring was great. Flower were blooming and lots of sun. Sigh! I wondered where the sun have gone to, recently.

Well, with all this coldness, my life still goes on. I have lots of assignments all due in the next 1-2 weeks, a presentation next Friday, mid-term exam next Tuesday and final is just around the corner. Sigh!

How come 2nd Semester just seems to pass so fast. I am hardly ready and, now it's the end already. Oh...well...

In fact...I can't wait to finish my studies. Well...not because I am not happy with it. I am. I love to be here studying especially doing something that I like but, the fact is also, I felt the hard pressure of life.

Yes, I do have pressure too. You know, it's just so natural for people to think that if one is oversea, of course that someone is having fun. True...partially......

You know life is a stage for one to perform, as Erving Goffman stressed. Not, to say all people are pretending but, it's all about preparing that front stage performance (unconsciously or consciously) to be performed to your audiences (your friends, your family, people around you, the society). A good example of this, how many people actually posted pictures of themselves when they are down...when one is crying..We don't. Because this is not expected of you.

What I am trying to say, at the front stage, I am performing my role as a diligent student, as a responsible daughter, as a compassionate friend..

Back stage, I am struggling to pay my fees, struggling to keep my mum's expectation and make her happy, struggling to be good friend to friends, and all others.

Truthfully, how many would admit this? I do!

We all put on roles, each time differently, we manage our roles according to situation and perform to our best capabilities and only once in awhile, you show your back stage; YOU ; to the one closest to you (perhaps, the time where you just needed to cry).

Hahhahahah! I sounded pessimistic, isnt it? Actually not, I just hope to bring in that perspective that sometimes, things are just not so bad. Coz, everyone would experience their good and bad days. It's just the perspective of how you look at things.

No idea how this is going to apply to me yet. Coz, presently studying. But, would love the idea knowing that probably after I finished my studies, I could somehow convince my boss to let me do my work on the road. Not a bad idea, rite? I don't know....or perhaps, I would come up with a certain business plan of my own. =)

4th - Convincing Your Loved Ones to Travel Too

Well, this one, I'll figured out at that time. Even if my loved one are not willing to travel with me. I pretty comfortable in doing my own travelling. Or maybe even some interesting friends.

5th - Bringing your Pets Around the World

This one definetly do not apply for me. I know I love pets. I really hope to have a dog one day but, not while travelling. My dream would be when I'm finally settled, having my own nice little place and have a cute little Westie.

6th - Safe, Affordable and Clean - Finding Places to Stay when you travel.

1. Consider longer term rentals - I am definetly keeping this in mind.

2. Use Couchsurfing.com - Am already a member, just have not ultimately use it yet. But, I do kind of fear if it's safe.

3. Connect with the language schools - Interesting idea - Never thought of this though.

4. Look on the hostel sites for bed and breakfast listings - I think I still fancy hostel, perhaps if I have the extra money to do so.

5. Negotiate a weekly rate discount at a hotel slightly over your budget - actually you can even do this at hostel, not necessary at hotel. I had my experience at a backpacker's place in New Zealand especially during low season such as Winter. They sometimes, even offer 3 Nights for the price of 2.

6. Use the sites the locals use - Noted =)

7. Don’t be afraid to walk - Check out and See the room first? Hmmmm! I think not everywhere that they allow you to do this. But, then..if they don't allow you to do it...you can always leave, right..!

8. Wait until you get there - This is usually my strategy when I travel. I tend to like to get the feel of the place before booking. Except for, if I arrive really late on the 1st night at a strange place.

Homework:

1. Try to find the local equivalent of Craigslist for where you’re traveling. If you find one, post it in the comments! If you can’t find it, ask in the comments, and we’ll all try to help out.

2. Sign up for couchsurfing, even if you never plan on sleeping on a couch. Check out the the highest ranked profiles for the areas where you’ll be traveling. Do they seem interesting? Send them a note! Be sure to have your picture and profile filled out, so they have some sense of who you are too.

Already a member and, I think it's also a good idea to join some of the international Hostel network such as Youth Hostel International (HiHostel) where they have network possibly, all around the world or local inpendent accommodations provider such as BBH in New Zealand.

3. Figure out what your travel priorities are. Do you care more about any of these items than the others: cost, privacy, cleanliness, flexibility, location, authenticity, safety, or amenities? Now compare your potential travel schedule. If authenticity is important, are you willing to spend a little more time in each destination? If cost is your major factor, are you willing to cut corners? If safety is important, will you be flexible on location? It’s okay if these things change over time, but understanding in advance what’s important to you and designing your travel to fit, will make you a much happier traveler.

I have been avidly following Almost Fearless from the first day she started her travel blog. I totally adore the way she blogs and wished I could blog like that and of coz, not forgetting a chance to travel like her. Anyway, she is currently blogging on 30 Ways in 30 Days to Redesign Your Life and Travel the World.

And, I am in the midst of planning. And, hopefully, I will realise my travel dream soon. Well, in Almost Fearless, Christine, the writer/blogger of Almost Fearless would be posting a whole months of tips, ideas, and practical way in making one's dream of travelling come true. Let's see, her first post was about The Mental Shift to Begin the Redesign

And, am doing her homework here..

1. Write down every item that is preventing you from traveling right now. As we go through this month, we will be (hopefully) crossing those items out. This is your to-do list.

My studies - Would probably need another 2 years before I finished my studies here in Dunedin.
Financially - I am putting all my money in my studies for the time being. Sigh! And, there would be nothing left especially with the University of Otago yearly increment on fees.

2. Go through your list. Have you created any impossible barriers? Have you set an impossible rule for yourself? Try re-wording the problem in a way that addresses your core concern without jumping to conclusions about the outcome.

Dont exactly know what to write here - yet

3. Start thinking about a date. If you’re not ready yet, that’s okay, but you might set a soft date based on the items on list #1, based on how your estimate to address each item. As you go through the month, adjust the date as you get closer to working out all of your details.

I am thinking if I finished my studies in 2011. Work for a year or so. Then, the BEST TIME would be in 2013. Wow...Sound so far away!

2nd Post :The Travel Diet

The goal is to work less, travel more. The easiest way to begin this process is becoming acutely aware of your relationship with money. - Almost Fearless-

Damn! I got to remember this....Got to be aware of what I am spending on.

Homework:

1. Even if you’re just contemplating travel, put yourself on the Travel Diet– at minimum, no big purchases, thoughtful shopping and reduction in expenses.

Will got to do this. The other good reason for doing this because I'm a student and I'll just got to try my best to save what I can.

2. The next time you feel like you need to buy something, give yourself 5 minutes ‘cooling off’ period before making the purchase.

I do that. So, I guess I'm safe on this part.

3. The month, commit to convert one potential purchase into being free, using one of the spending alternatives: workaround, reuse, borrow, or barter.

Will try this. I can sometime be a compulsive buyer...

No..no...Not just try....Will do it! =P

4. For every household purchase, put it to the “backpack test”. Will you be able (or want) to carry it with you? If not, don’t buy it.

Oppps! This is going to be tough. The reason is I'm a damn ASIAN. And, we just adore good food.. Ok..ok...No more excuses....Will **Cross my finger** and try to do this..

That Time of the Year Again

It's that time of the year again, another one month and I'm sitting for exams. Wow! How time is passing by , at a glimpsed of an eye.

Truthfully, I am totally unprepared. I'm so not ready for the exam. I really do not know how am I going to go into the exam hall this way. I don't know. I guess I am always unprepared into going to the exam hall.

Well, life is indeed passing by me -- fast. At times, I felt too fast but, aren't I silly. Everyone is having the same amount of time so how can mine seems to passing by faster than others. =P I guess, probably the different is, I find that I am rushing for something. I guess I am catching up on certain things in my life. I keep wanting and needing more time. At times, I just want to pause the time for a little while longer.

I don't know. I guess I see time differently nowaday. I keep feeling what if it's my last day on earth. Have I done enough? Have I forgotten anything? Would I regret anything? I don't know. Perhaps I will and perhaps I will not. But, one thing for sure. I do take more time to enjoy the sun more now. To just appreciate the simple thing in life. No more just rushing thru.

Anyway, life continues. assignments, readings, exams....same old same old for me. Wondered though, what would I be doing after all these are done.. I wondered!

Hmmmmm!
