An April Fools’ Baby: Klancy is the newest addition to the Windrush Herd

“Appli-K”, “Fancy Klancy”, and “Mr. Personality” are only some of the nicknames that WFTE’s newest addition came in with! With his tall stature, soft brown eyes, and “loud” coloring, Klancy is hard to miss amongst the herd. He is extremely inquisitive and is always looking around to see what everyone is doing and who is bringing him his next treat!

Here are some fun facts about the new guy at WFTE! Klancy was born on April Fools’ Day in Kansas in 1993, making him sixteen years old. He stands tall at 16.1 hands which makes him one of the tallest horses at WFTE. Klancy is considered a sorrel/tobiano paint, which basically means he is chestnut and white. He is registered with the American Paint Horse Association and also the Pinto Horse Association of America. His registered name is MPH Robins April Fool and has shown under the name “Appli-K.”

Klancy came to us from Suzanne Mooney of Topsfield, Ma. He was lucky enough to have this home with her for eight years before coming to us! During this time, he underwent training at the Bradford Equestrian Center by Keith and Linda Angstadt and was trained up to first level dressage. He has also undergone some basic driving training, but was always too curious about what was going on behind him to really excel (Curious? No way, not our Klancy!).

As most of you may have realized, Klancy gets along with just about all of the horses in our herd. He has been spotted around the property grooming Ti, eating with Chester, and most recently out on grass with the WFTE herd! Klancy is accustomed to having turn out buddies, because at his previous home he was best friend with Suzanne’s mini horses! His favorite friend was only 8 hands, which is just about half his size!

Klancy has a condition called Laryngeal Hemiplegia, also known as “Roaring.” This term describes a horse that makes an abnormal respiratory noise during exercise. This noise is caused by a partial paralysis of one side of the larynx, or voice box, and can be heard when the horse breathes in air. This can sometimes negatively affect horses that are in strenuous training programs and/or high levels of competition, but this condition should not affect him while doing the type of work he will be asked to do at WFTE.

Klancy has seemed to fit right in here at Windrush, carrying a full work load in only his second week of classes! That must be some kind of record! He is already adored by riders, volunteers, and staff alike. He has some pretty big shoes to fill over the next couple of years; however, we can already tell that he is up to the challenge! He is a kind-hearted, sweet guy who aims to please and loves to be around people. Really, what more could we ask for in a horse?

"How do I know that riding will be the thing that makes the difference? It’s simple: I can see it."

Fast forward 20 years. My kids are all grown up. We’re thinking back on our days at Windrush Farm and how it made all the difference to them. In their words, they tell me how the riding counterbalanced some of the more difficult challenges in their lives. They say that this so-called counterbalance was what they needed to face other academic and social demands on them. I listen and smile, because I know how right they are. How they are soaring now.

The truth is that they get a whole lot more at Windrush Farm than instruction. They get the time to better understand themselves. Windrush Farm acknowledges their special needs and honors their right to grow.

For now, I wouldn’t fast forward time for all the horses on the farm. I am overjoyed to hear my seven-year old twins describe how they love their ponies, how it feels to ride, and what they would do differently next time. We are definitely cantering in the right direction.

“I am so good with Guinness. I love Guinness,” says Emma with great self -assurance. “I am really good at whoa-ing,” she says. In contrast, her brother Nick says “I get to tell the horse what to do and nobody else is telling the horse what to do but me.” Nick has no idea how insightful he is about his own needs. Nick does very well when the rules are clear and structure is in place. It strikes me how clearly their comments reflect where they are and what they need to gain from the experience. Windrush Farm is teaching everyone, including me.

Every Wednesday afternoon, we all get this incredible feeling in our bones as we leave from their school for our 30-minute drive to Windrush Farm. The car is filled with the anticipation. As we turn off the highway and approach the farm, Emma says how she “loves horse country.” She is a perceptive 7-year old. We drive along, until we reach Brookview Road and hang a left. It’s a classic country road. There is absolutely nothing pretentious about it, nor need there be. There’s a horse, another horse, a brook and then there’s the symmetry of the road that offers up both security and familiarity. Leave it up to Mother Nature to line both sides of the road with leafy green ferns and large maple trees. We’re nearly there.

My kids are prepared for their lesson. The car ride has given them the chance to decompress from the school day. That’s what they need. That’s who they are. They are now ready for the tempo that both country and horses have to offer, and for the instructors who take them by the hand to make the lesson accessible to both children. That is what it is all about: all children can participate at Windrush Farm.

When my children are at Windrush Farm, they are so utterly focused on the riding lesson: on adjusting their ponies’ bridles, tightening their girths, making sure their toes turn up in the stirrups, giving the horse direction, and listening to the instructor. I see the change every time I hear my daughter, Emma, recount the steps she takes to ready the horse for riding. I see the change every time my son, Nick, slows down to ride. The lessons are methodical: one step at a time, there is no rushing the horse. It just can’t be done, and Nick now knows that.

Windrush farm is like a vaccine against poor self-esteem for any children with special needs, and I see it working for my kids. A typical day for a child with special needs might involve a number of frustrations due to the academic or social demands of the school day. A typical lesson at Windrush is based on forming a relationship between child and horse and instructor that takes them far away from the daily grind.

My daughter Emma loves her riding lessons, and she loves her horse, Guinness, and her instructor, Susan Lutz, just as much. The riding lessons are giving her a sense of mastery and accomplishment. Throughout her entire life, Emma has worked incredibly hard to achieve the milestones of many typically-developing children. She worked very hard to walk but even harder to learn to talk. She’s now working very hard to read.

My son, Nick, is equally in love with riding. He is extremely bright but struggles with issues of self-regulation and organization. As I once heard in a lecture I attended by Dr. Hallowell (from the Hallowell Center in Sudbury): “ADHD is one of the most difficult gifts to unwrap.” Well, that is certainly true at times but not impossible. My husband and I have been on a mission to help Nick “unwrap” his gifts and to give Nick the tools to pave a road for himself that won’t be too rocky for him. Nobody feels good traveling along a rocky road for any length of time. Windrush farm gives him the time he needs to think clearly to figure out a couple of better strategies to employ.

How do I know that riding will be the thing that makes the difference? It’s simple: I can see it.

THE HORSE BOY is a ravishing documentary about a Texas couple and their autistic son. When two-year-old Rowan was diagnosed with autism his parents, the father a writer/horse trainer, the mother a psychology professor, try all available therapies to no avail. But the boy is enamored of animals, especially horses. So they begin a trek on horseback to Outer Mongolia in an effort at shamanic tradition. THE HORSE BOY is part travel adventure, part shamanic exploration and part an intimate look into an autistic mind. This film gives voice to those who display extraordinary courage and creativity in the face of heartbreak.

We did not have a saddle or stirrups. We did “around the world” while the horse was walking. We had to face different directions while the horse was walking. I also kneeled and stood up on the horse. We did some trotting.

The saddle has a horn used to tie the cow or calf to the lasso.

We stepped over a few poles we went uphill and downhill a lot. When we go downhill we lean back. When we go uphill we get into our two point jump position. We trotted in the woods too.

I rode on Judge and Michael rode Woody for a little while. We missed our horses. Woody was taller than Judge. And Judge weighed more than Woody. After I rode Judge I rode Woody. We compared the walk and the trot and the responded. I had a fun time, thanks!

Berry & Son, Inc. to benefit the riders with disabilities at Windrush Farm. Susan Tarr of Beverly, parent of Windrush student provided the keynote presentation and Billy Costa, of Kiss 108FM and NECN served as the auctioneer for the event.

315 guests attended the event held at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge. The evening included silent and live auctions, dinner, and dancing and raised more than $100,000 to benefit the riders with disabilities at Windrush Farm.

This event generates more than a quarter of the funds it costs annually for us to run the program and provide our services at a discount to those in need.

Windrush Farm Therapeutic Equitation (W.F.T.E.) is a 200-acre nonprofit horse farm specializing in teaching physically, emotionally, and learning disabled children and adults to ride and work with horses. To raise money for those shoes, we have our annual star fund drive.

This year we're trying something new - The Windrush Stars Photo Wall

How does it work?
You make a donation online to the star fund and upload your favorite pic to the photo wall with your special messages to the horses, staff, volunteers, etc.

Then I will hang an ornament on the holiday tree up at the barn in your honor!

The night of the holiday barn party on Wednesday, December 9 at 5pm there will be a poster of this online photo wall and everyone on the wall will be part of the tree blessing ceremony.

Our goal is $3,500 - help us reach the goal! - Become a Windrush Star!
