Nonprofits Team up to Motivate Students

Brave Enough To Fail and Kiwanis Club Foundation of Greater Danbury are extremely pleased to announce our new partnership.

The two organizations will work together in providing motivational programming and scholarships to area high schools.

Area Key Clubs will be invited to sponsor BETF presentations at high schools in Danbury, Bethel, New Milford, New Fairfield, Brookfield, Redding, and Ridgefield.

Danbury Kiwanis Club President Matt Bartelme commented saying,"We are definitely excited about this opportunity to work with Brave Enough To Fail. They are another nonprofit that is as passionate as we are about enriching the lives of children to build stronger communities."

Wayne Winsley, executive director of Brave Enough To Fail says,“I’m honored and humbled to have the support of such a great organization as Kiwanis of Danbury. This partnership will strengthen our ability to raise student achievement and promote leadership through service.”

Kiwanis member Foster Crawford, a former assistant superintendent of schools in Waterbury and Stamford indicated that, “Brave Enough To Fail is an excellent motivational tool to help students believe in themselves and to set and achieve high personal goals.”

The goal is to begin presentations and award the first scholarships this school year.

None Better than Leora Levy

Republicans haven't had a whole lot of good news this political season both nationwide and here in Connecticut.

It was very sad news indeed, to learn earlier this month that after four decades of service to the Republican Party in various capacities, Pat Longo will not seek another term as Republican National Committeewoman.

In politics, true friends are as rare as fancy pink diamonds and twice as valuable.
I am both honored and humbled to be able to call Pat Longo my friend.

Ms. Longo has been a trailblazing stalwart whose grace, expertise, and determination has been a guiding light for Republicans both here and in Washington.
Pat Longo leaves a void that is hard to fill.

That is why, it is good news indeed for Connecticut Republicans that Leora Levy is being considered a likely successor to the post.

In this writer's opinion, there is none better than Leora Levy to serve as the next Republican National Committeewoman for the great state of Connecticut.

Leora Levy

Mrs. Levy is a tireless crusader whose hard work and dedication have already been paying great dividends to both the RNC and CTGOP for years.

I do not know Mrs. Levy very well personally. We have spoken at length only once, during a meeting hosted by she and her husband Steve.

But first impressions are key. Leora immediately impressed me as a warm and gracious person who has a deep and abiding love for the country in which she lives and the party to which she faithfully volunteers so much of her heart and soul.
She is a leader with a servant's heart. It doesn't get much better than that.

For Connecticut Republicans, this news that Leora Levy may be our next Republican National Committeewoman should be as welcome as cool rain after a season of drought.

Morality Matters...A Lot!

John Adams, signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights and our second President.

Freedom requires morality. The founding fathers knew this and it remains just as true today as it was then.

We can't trade our morals away in the name of ANYTHING and expect to keep our free republic. It simply won't work.

It won't work because without morals to regulate our behavior, the government has to.

Which is why some in our government are so in favor of anything that degrades, ridicules, and destroys morality.

Give Thanks for America

When we read the news headlines and see in social media, the images of unrest, mayhem, and despair, it is easy to forget where it is that we really live and what that really means.

Thanksgiving as we celebrate it, is an American holiday. America, warts and all, is worth being thankful for.

There is one place, one shining place on earth where any individual can begin with absolutely nothing, yet go on to become, do, and achieve anything he or she wishes, through a combination of education, determination, and hard work. That place is the United States of America.

As long as we protect the freedoms, principles, and moral foundation upon which the founders built this nation, America will remain as a blazing beacon of hope for the rest of the world.

I am thankful for being blessed to live in America.

The Path to Victory for CT Republicans

We all know the results of election 2014 in Connecticut. With the exception of some gains in the state legislature, once again the red wave that rolled across the nation, parted when it reached the borders of the nutmeg state, leaving us with just a sprinkle rather than the cleansing wash for which we so fervently hoped.

At the federal and statewide level, once again our candidates lost across the board, although two of our under-ticket candidates came within a hair's breadth of victory. (More on them shortly)

It is safe to say that the voters of Connecticut chose not to buy what our Republican candidates were selling.

What about Connecticut donors?

I did some cursory research. I simply went to the Open Secret website, looked up the total CT. Republican contributions and subtracted the campaign totals to see what was left.

In 2013-2014 Connecticut political donors gave over thirteen million dollars to Republican candidates and parties. ($13,359,763) They just didn’t give it to candidates in Connecticut.

*Greenberg $1,589,000 (this number is actually less because Greenberg loaned his campaign about 900K)

Debicella $1,174,000

Brown $15,000

Cavanaugh $88,500

Corey $21,000

Total =$2,887,500 in CT and $10,472,263 out of state.

Less than three million dollars went to Local candidates and over 10 million dollars went to Republican candidates and causes elsewhere. By the way, in 2012 Republicans gave over 35 million dollars of which, less than 8 million went to Connecticut races.

There is a lack of confidence in Connecticut’s Republican brand on the part of Connecticut’s Republican donors.

There is a lack of confidence in Connecticut’s Republican Brand on the part of voters both inside and outside of the base.

The drumbeat has already begun for a new face at the helm of CTGOP.

I would offer this. If change is to be made, what is needed is not a “manager” or a “party insider”.

What is needed is SOMEONE who is a visionary leader with the capacity to effectively articulate the conservative vision and principles to both groups in a way that they can understand and embrace.

In short, we need a leader who can sell the Republican brand in Connecticut.

But what about the formidable Democrat ground game? How do we compete with that?

The key to an effective ground game begins with having people on the ground in the communities in question. This is achieved by showing up and forming & cultivating relationships within those areas. The time to show up is not September of election year. The time to show up is NOW. Show up and show genuine concern for the issues and challenges facing the people of our large communities.

By showing up, we have the opportunity show our principles in action. By showing up and forging relationships we begin to build a base of boots for the ground and votes for the ballot box

How do we get CT. Republican donors to be more supportive of Connecticut candidates?

Make no mistake. CT donors are very savvy individuals who already fully understand and embrace conservative principles and vision. THEY JUST DON’T SEE THEM HERE, which is why they don’t contribute here. They want their hard earned dollars to make a difference and tend to support conservative candidates and causes that they have confidence in and that have a strong base of support from others, like from the party.

Currently, when good conservative candidates of principle and vision seek the support of many major donors, those donors are fully aware that the current vision and direction of Connecticut's Republican Party is...something different. Why then would they invest? After all, they didn't become wealthy by being stupid with their money.

When Republicans in the state with arguably the richest donor base in the nation show something different, THEN perhaps donors will show something different...support.

That brings us to the argument that conservatism sells everywhere else in the country but doesn't sell in Connecticut.

How then did Peter Lumaj, a candidate who from his own mouth, is absolutely and apologetically conservative, come so close to becoming our Secretary of the State?

How did Tim Herbst, who has been a firm, steady fiscal conservative leader of his town, come so close to becoming our Treasurer?

They did so by offering voters a clear and different alternative to what they have now. Neither man ran as a watered-down version of their opponent. They sold conservatism in a manner that appealed to a wide audience and they found a surprising number of buyers.

The Republican Party of Connecticut has two choices.

1: Find leadership that can effectively sell the Republican brand, energize our base and increase our presence and impact in the urban and unaffiliated voting blocks.

Or,

2: Continue with more of the same and continue to be ignored by both voters and donors.

A letter to a letter, to the Editor of Middletown Press

This in response to a letter published by the Middletown press from resident Eric Kuhn

In order to say that "Nationally, the Republican Party is the party of non minorities." One has to totally disregard the fact that one of the founding pillars of the Republican Party was the support of non-minorities in particular black non minorities.

To Mister Kuhn's assertion that Republicans live to prevent non-white voters from voting, I can only surmise the mountain of evidence in Connecticut and in many of blue area across these United States, that many a lifelong Democrat career has been nourished by preventing non-white voters from voting any other way than Democrat straight across the ticket.

By the way, when it comes to the so-called voter suppression by Republicans with such things as voter ID LAWS, in order to make the argument work, one has to start with the assuming that black voters like me are too stupid to figure out how to get proper identification in order to vote. Somehow requiring me to show identification in order to buy alcohol does not unfairly prevent me from buying a six-pack. Somehow requiring me to show identification in order to get a library card does not disenfranchise me from the public library system. Somehow requiring me to show identification in order to board an airplane does not unfairly suppress my equal right to access air transportation.

The Republican Party, of which I am a proud member, champions the values of individual freedom for ALL people that enabled this nation to rise to a level of greatness heretofore unseen in human history.

Too many members up today's Democratic Party seek and hold power through class warfare and racial politics.

It is not Republicans that continue to perpetuate the myth that black folks and other minorities are not quite smart enough, tough enough, or hard-working enough to succeed in America without help from the government. That is a Democrat philosophy.

I have a question for you.

How is it that here in the great state of Connecticut, the party that, according to mister Kuhn, hates black people, is the only party that has ever sent a black representative to Congress and is the only party that has black candidates for federal office?

The Democrat Party, in Connecticut which according to Mister Kuhn, looooves black people, appears to only like black folk up to a certain level.

Let's be honest here folks, the top tier of Connecticut's Democratic Party is as white as a Klan rally.

If you are a person of color who wishes to seek federal office, you need to roll with the GOP.

In 2012 when I, a proud American who happens to be black, virtually walked in off the street and announced that I would be seeking the Republican nomination for United States Congress in our third district, there was only one question. "Do you think you have the goods? If so, go for it."

That is as it should be when it comes to the dreams, aspirations and goals of every American. The United States of America is the one place on earth where regardless of where you come from or what you look like, if you think you've got the goods, you can take your shot.

Too many of our friends on the other side of the aisle have forgotten that fact, or worse, are choosing to ignore it for their own purposes.

No, overt racism, regardless of party, is not dead in America. But neither is the soft racism of low expectations which the late, great Ronald Reagan spoke about. That particular brand seems to rest mainly on only one side of the aisle.

It is precisely because of the misguided, ill-informed and bankrupt philosophies of racial and social elitists and political misanthropes like Mr. Kuhn that I am, and shall remain, a proud member of the Republican Party.

Connecticut's Republican Party need only choose to represent all of the people in a manner that protects the freedoms of all of the people.

Nothing puts tyranny to flight more effectively than armed citizens determined to protect their lives, families and property.

The notorious pseudo-Islamic terror groups tried to attack the Attagara and Kawuri communities over the weekend but the insurgents were instantly repelled by a group of armed women.

The Attagara and Kawuri villages in Gwoza and Bama Local Government Areas of Borno State resisted the attack using an array of local talismans and, of course, their assault weapons came in handy as well."

It is ironic that people on the other side of the world are embracing private gun ownership as a guardian of freedom even as America is flirting with letting that same guardian slip away.

In the United States of America:

We don't worry about catching a bullet while casting our ballot.

We don't fear being arrested for dancing in a You Tube video.

We don't scan the skies for incoming missiles during backyard barbecues.

We don't suffer the horror of having our school girls kidnapped en masse by masked terrorists.

These are just a few of the things going on in the world today that we Americans don't have to worry about happening to us because of the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives in the name of our freedom.

Thank you just doesn't seem to be enough, but it's the very least we can do.

Thank you to all of my comrades in arms, past and present, who died so that I can sleep peacefully in my bed.

Straight from Senator Looney's Bin

If you listen closely, every once in awhile a career politician will accidentally give their true position away.
such was the case recently with State Senate Majority Leader Martin M. Looney, who has been the Democratic state senator from the 11th District for 22 years.

MarryE. O'Leary, of the New Haven Register, quotes Sen. Looney as saying, Republican strategy since the 1980s, is to "dismantle government, disable government and prevent government from being able to run effectively and then blame it for not being able to run effectively. Democrats recognize that while government may not be the answer all the time, effective government is an important answer a good deal of the time.

Translation: Democrats tend to believe that more government and more of your tax dollars is the answer to many of our problems.

I respectfully but vociferously disagree.

More regulations won't make more businesses move to Connecticut and hire people. If that were the case, our state unemployment rate would be near zero right now.

More government intervention doesn't mean better education for our children.
If that were the case, Connecticut's educational achivement gap wouldn't be the largest in the entire nation, which it is. And such large numbers of mostly black and brown young men wouldn't be going directly from high school to hard time in prison.

More taxes dollars on candy and so-called junk food, as proposed by Democrat Sen Richard Blumenthal, won't make our fat children suddenly shed pounds by switching to carrot sticks during their hours in front of the Xbox. But this sweet deal would most certainly lead to another cavity in the taxpayer's pocketbook.

Some things, like Parenting, Personal Responsibility and visionary Free Enterprise which drives innovation and puts people to work are all NON-LEGISLATABLE.

Benjamin Franklin, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, wrote,

"Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have need of more masters."

Apparently Senator Looney and his peers believe that we the unwashed peasants are too stupid to look after ourselves and are in need of more master government to look after us, at our own expense.

Violence in Connecticut schools is again making headlines.
In the wake of the horrific tragedy in Sandy Hook, lawmakers rushed to enact sweeping legislation designed to prevent such a calamity from ever happening again.

That legislation was powerless to prevent the two latest attacks in Milford and Hartford. The weapon of choice for both assailants was not a firearm but a knife.
I'm waiting for the first knife control bill.

In their overall purpose and mission, neither guns nor knives have really changed since their invention. Both can be used as either tools for hunting and recreation or weapons for killing. It all depends on the user.

People, particularly those who live throughout the several states of this nation, have changed.
We have reached a point where more and more of our young people believe that killing other people is an acceptable reaction if they are angry enough.

The inescapable truth is this: People, not products, kill people.

At some point we must face the reality that American society is reaping the whirlwind sown by our decent into moral relativism. If everything is okay as long as it makes you happy, you're liable to do anything.
You can't legislate morality, you have to learn it.

Giving up our liberties won't enforce moral behavior among citizens. It is indeed, morality and virtue that allow a free society to exist.

I grew up poor, Black, inner-city dwelling, and was raised by a single parent, in my case, my great grandmother. I’ve been on welfare and actually used food stamps. In short, I’m the picture that many liberals hold up when they stridently declare, “We have to do something to help these poor people!”

Here’s what I know from first-hand experience. Food Stamps, while helpful in the short term, will not lift you out of poverty, only your hard work and individual choices can do that. There is not a single government program that has ever made one person financially independent. Only you can do that for you.

The major flaw in the well-meaning government largess aimed at helping people that look like me and others who don’t, and winning the “war on poverty” is that it is killing our work ethic and sense of individual responsibility.

This nation cannot survive if the majority of the population is depending on others or the father figure government to do the achieving for them. We must dial back the entitlement mentality or our Republic will indeed be lost.

A proposed bill in Connecticut needs your help getting out of the Public Health Committee so it can go to the House and Senate for a vote. House Bill 5737, “An Act Concerning the Use of Patient Health Care Information in the All-Payer Claims Database Program,” would protect your privacy by giving you the right to chose whether or not your information is included in the state’s All-Payer Claims Database, which collects, stores, and uses information from health care claims

You should be able to decide how and by whom your sensitive health information is used. Let your legislators know that having control over your medical data is important to you by contacting them and encouraging them to support HB 5737. You can see a full list of the Public Health Committee members and how to contact them here. To contact your own district Representative or Senator to ask them to vote for the bill, you can follow this link to find out who represents you.

Is Discrimination Against Women Okay in CT Legislature?

At first it might seem like a silly question but in view of the Ernest Hewett situation, it needs to be asked.

This is what CT. State Representative Ernest Hewett ACTUALLY said in defending his now infamous “snake under my desk” comment.

According to The Hartford Courant, the New London Democrat told the paper that he

"purposely will not have female interns. My intern now is a male. I want to keep it like that. I've had female interns in the past that sit in my office all day. I thought it was totally weird and I didn't want another."
"That's why I was so leery about staying away from interns," he told The Courant. "I don't know what they're going to give me. They may give me a female, but I don't want a female intern. That may sound sexist but I really don't. That way that keeps me good and that keeps everybody else good." Read full story here

To me, the above statements sound really outrageous, offensive, archaic, and sexist. In fact the word Neanderthal comes to mind.

But I could be wrong so let us do a small experiment and flip it around a bit and pretend that the legislator in question is a white Republican and the intern in question is black. In that case the statement would read as follows.

According to The Hypothetical paper, the imaginary Republican told the paper that he

Would these imaginary comments be okay if they were uttered by a sitting Connecticut lawmaker? Or would they be viewed as outrageous, offensive, archaic, and racist?

If so, then why are the very real comments above that were actually put forth by State Representative Ernest Hewett being ignored, particularly by the many women who are serving and working in and around the Connecticut Legislature?

Why Does Government Want to Disarm You While Arming Itself?

In recent months we have seen proposed gun control legislation that seeks to do everything from banning certain types of weapons, limiting magazine sizes, to even taxing the bullets themselves.

Meanwhile, our government is literally buying bullets like they are going out of style.

The Department of Homeland Security is set to purchase a further 21.6 million rounds of ammunition to add to the 1.6 billion bullets it has already obtained over the course of the last 10 months alone

To put that in perspective, during the height of active battle operations in Iraq, US soldiers used 5.5 million rounds of ammunition a month. Extrapolating the figures, the DHS has purchased enough bullets over the last 10 months to wage a full scale war for almost 30 years.

This is not a conspiracy theory or even a pro-second amendment statement. I am simply posing a question that even the most ardent gun control supporter should be asking.

Why?

If your next door neighbor went to the local store and purchased 200 rounds of ammunition, many of you would be very concerned and want to know, “What on earth do they need that much firepower for, what are they planning to do?”

Well…your civilian government is stockpiling ammo at a faster rate than the military and at the same time seeking to restrict civilian access to firearms and even ammunition.

You might want to ask, Why, exactly, is the DHS stockpiling massive amounts of ammo?

AN ACT REQUIRING BEHAVIORAL HEALTH ASSESSMENTS FOR CHILDREN.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened:
That section 10-206 of the general statutes be amended to require (1) each pupil enrolled in public school at grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 and each home-schooled child at ages 12, 14 and 17 to have a confidential behavioral health assessment, the results of which shall be disclosed only to the child's parent or guardian, and (2) each health care provider performing a child's behavioral health assessment to complete the appropriate form supplied by the State Board of Education verifying that the child has received the assessment.
Statement of Purpose:
To provide behavioral health assessments to children.

Spotting a mental health problem early and preventing another tragedy like the recent one in Sandy Hook is important.

But as the parent of a school aged child, I find the above proposal dangerous, invasive, and outrageous.

Our well-meaning legislators want to ensure that every child whether in public school or home school, is given periodic behavioral health assessments, whether they need them or not, whether they have shown any signs of having a problem or not.

These assessments are usually given to children who have already been determined to be in need. Now even the most well behaved child would be given these tests.

The proposal is Dangerous, because the government has now created a small, “big brother” that will follow my child around for the rest of her days.

You may say that they are just children and this record won’t follow them. But if your insurance company requires records, it may or may not affect their quality of care (pre-existing condition) in the future. If your child has gone through a stressor that would affect their assessment (divorce, family job loss, housing change etc…) they may now test as an “in need child” or “problem child” as mental health professional would tell us.

The proposal is invasive because unlike health vaccinations which are administered to prevent contagious diseases, this testing requirement now goes not only into our public schools which is invasive enough, but in the case of homeschoolers it is even more frightening. Homeschooling parents have chosen to have freedom of religion, freedom of nutritional choice, and freedom of educational choices, but now the government has found a way to burst through those freedoms and into their child’s life.

The proposal is outrageous because the eight simple lines are so open to interpretation on so many levels that the potential for abuse and mismanagement are huge.

This proposed piece of legislation should never leave the committee room. Call or email your representative whether they are on the public health committee or not and urge them to stop this proposal in its tracks.

To those strident voices who are, in the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy, calling for the abolition of the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution because it is old and outdated, I offer this.

The 1st Amendment, ratified 222 years ago, guarantees your freedom of speech. You may not like what I say, but I get to say it, AND you get to disagree with me without fear of being locked up or shut up.

The 19th Amendment, ratified 93 years ago, protects the voting rights of women. Frankly, I've heard my wife, my mother and my sister say things that make me cringe at the very idea that they get to help elect our leadership. (I love you ladies dearly) But guess what? That freedom should always remain.

In my humble opinion, the rap star Flavor Flav (google him) is as dumb as a box of rocks, but his right to enter a voting booth and fill out a ballot is sacred according to the 143 year old, 15th Amendment and it should remain so.

Only one time has the U.S. Constitution been amended in the direction of restricting freedom, that was the short-lived Eighteenth Amendment which brought us Prohibition and a flourishing black market in alcohol. It lasted only 13 years and was overruled. The people's right to drunken debauchery shall not be infringed.

Should the President be able to repeal, by executive order, the 222 year old, 2nd Amendment? The answer is no! Remember, the U.S. Constitution was written with the express purpose of limiting the power of the Federal Government. The Federal Government cannot now remove amendments to suit a given agenda.

The constitution of the United States is the bedrock of our freedom and should only be amended in the direction of expanding our liberties and not restricting them.

Everyone should be concerned when government begin talking about restricting our freedoms.
Whether you have a black or brown face, whether you shave your legs before going out, like to enjoy a beer during the playoffs or blog your content or discontent with our current President, your rights are being protected.
Persons who own guns deserve to have that right protected as well.

Why White America Ignores Urban Gun Violence

While we as a nation continue to try and wrap our collective head around the unspeakable tragedy that occurred in Newtown on December 14^th 2012, and as the issues of gun control, gun violence and mental health are now firmly planted on the front burner of our political stove, there are some people in the black community asking the question, what took you so long to recognize gun violence as a problem because black people have been dealing with this for years? Dr Cornel West laments that there is “not a peep, not a mumbling word when black folk get shot.”

Truth is…black children shoot each other with such regularity that it is no longer a big deal.

The list of young black homicide victims and their murderers is so long that it just blurs into a large bloody tapestry on the back wall of American society that goes largely unnoticed because it is always right there.

The questions that I am more interested in are…Why do so many of our children have so little regard for the sanctity of human life that they can pull a trigger and end a life as easily as flicking off a light switch? And, what can we do to reverse this process? Because new gun laws alone aren’t going to do it. We have far too many young black men with no fathers, no values, no direction, and no hope.

The city of New Haven alone has seen fifty-one murders in the past twenty-one months but the level of outrage from the parents, politicians, and clergy that matter most is sadly lacking. Then of course there is the city of Chicago with 500 homicides in 2012 alone.

By the way, since 2001 the number of American troops killed in Afghanistan is about 2000. During the same time period more 5,000 people have been killed by gunfire in and around Chicago, the overwhelming majority of the victims were black.

With numbers like these it is no wonder that there is little to no media coverage of violence in our urban centers. In American culture things that happen every day and all day aren’t special.

It doesn’t mean that not every violent death is a tragedy because make no mistake every life that is cut short is a huge loss not only to the family but to society as a whole which is robbed of the promise that resides within every human life.

I’m typing these words on the morning of January 1^st 2013 and already in Chicago 11 people have been shot since midnight, including 20 year old Octavius Dontrell Lamb, who will never see a full day of 2013.

In Philadelphia at around 12:30am a 17 year old boy was shot and killed. By 3:00am there were two more bodies littering the streets of the city of brotherly love.

In my native city of Cleveland, at 2:50am police found an unidentified black male shot to death on the front porch of an east side home.

The reason the mainstream media pays so little attention to these killings of mostly black and brown people has less to do with racism than the simple fact there are just too many of them.

If we believe that constant exposure to violence on television and in video games desensitizes children and adults to violence in real life, then why is it so hard to believe that constant exposure to gun violence in our minority communities would desensitize the rest of the nation to the true impact and depth of this very real national tragedy?

Black people shoot each other with such regularity that it is no longer news, it is just normal.

And folks, white people can’t fix that, only black people can.

This is why I am choosing to focus my efforts on inspiring and motivating as many young minds as possible with the idea that their lives are valuable and filled with the promise of greatness and opportunity. Maybe some of those young minds will in turn begin to see value in the lives of their peers as well.

Time to Increase Taxes

Connecticut is approaching a projected $365-million deficit this fiscal year, and staring at a $1.1-billion shortfall next year. Governor Dannel P. Malloy and the Democrat dominated legislature seem to be at a loss (no pun intended) as to how to stop our state budget from bleeding red ink.

Folks, what we need is nice big tax increase. No, the conservative capitalist isn't talking about adding to the $1.5 billion wallop that Malloy has already socked us with.

I'm talking about the only kind of tax increase that will really improve the fiscal health of our anemic economy.

It is time to increase the amount of taxes being paid by increasing the number of people that are paying taxes.

It is time to increase the number of young people working and paying taxes.

It is time to increase the number of middle class people working and paying taxes.

And yes, it is time to increase the number of wealthy people working and paying taxes.

Governor Malloy is now being accused by some of shredding the safety net to try and balance the budget.

The truth is, there is only one way to painlessly shrink the safety net. You must decrease the number of people in the net. More people working means fewer people needing help which means dollars are freed up for other things like...oh I don't know, education. or one could really get wacky and actually lower taxes.

Yes, it is time to increase taxes by getting serious about encouraging and helping business to create more jobs for our neighbors.

Unfortunately, that type of tax increase seems to be beyond the understanding of those in charge, from the White House to the State House.

Time to Get Back to Work

Now that the election is over.

I am getting back to delivering the message of Achievement, Independence, Education and Hard Work to as many members of this and the next generation as possible.

My goal is to visit at least 50 high schools throughout the stately Connecticut beginning in January 2013.

I believe that now more than ever, this is vital.

Veterans Day

This Veterans Day as we pause to thank my comrades in uniform past, present, and future, for their service to our nation, let us also remember WHY we don the uniform and take up arms in service to our nation.

From Paul Revere and the Sons of Liberty to today’s Seal Team Six, brave men and women have risked much and often sacrificed all to protect the inalienable rights bestowed upon all humans by their creator, Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

To this very day, the United States of America remains the brightest shining beacon of freedom in the world. We are one nation, under God with liberty and justice for all. We are also, thanks to our armed forces, a safe nation.

Just yesterday I pointed to news pictures of the rocket attack on Gaza in Israel and said to my family, “We are blessed that because of our armed forces, our citizens don’t have to worry about random missiles dropping out the sky on us. There are many people in the world who don’t have that luxury.”

While I can’t speak for every armed forces veteran and member, I know that I speak for myself and many others when I say, we put on the uniform because we love our country and what it stands for and we want to protect it from all enemies foreign and domestic.

As private citizens we also have a duty to protect and defend our nation and its principles.
That duty remains even if at the moment it doesn’t feel like the popular thing to do.

Cowards ask the question “is it expedient?” Expedience asks the question “is it the political thing to do?” Vanity asks the question “is it popular?” but conscience asks the question “is it the right thing to do?”

“A Sad Day, Yes…”

“Today is a sad day for American conservatives. Particularly, that’s the case for conservative republicans here in Connecticut where once again liberal democrats have run the table and swept every federal office in the state. The natural tendency is to wring our hands and ask: "where do we go from here?"

But here is the truth.

We played hard and left it all on the field. Today, we are exhausted, our uniforms are torn and stained, and our psyche bruised and battered from the political thrashing that we have taken. We have nothing to be ashamed of. The values and principles that built this great nation remain just as true and worth fighting for as they ever were.

Remember, the final whistle has not sounded on the future of our country. We are still in the game.

The people have spoken and now the other team has the ball. They must either advance it or be held accountable for their failure. There can be no excuses, no rationalizations, and no evasions.

Like George Washington's army at Valley Forge we will persevere through this long continuing winter of liberal rule. We will marshal our resources and hone our message. When the politics of free stuff and deficit spending fails (and it will), we must be ready to march in the spring of the next election.

Yes, today is a sad day for America, but the saddest day would be the day we stop fighting for America.
