The WKRA is looking ahead in 2012 to see developments taking place at Fairfield Park. Please read the email below and mark your calendars for the Fairfield Park Meeting and the WKRA AGM. We are always looking for new members and will be seeking residents who are interested in the upcoming WKRA election for positions as Executive and Board of Directors. 2012 Membership News

Membership for 2012 is free!
If you have received this email you are a member of the WKRA and will receive regular emails informing you of upcoming events and news from the neighbourhood. In order to better serve you, as a member, we ask that you complete a membership form. The WKRA runs on the strength of volunteers yet does incur costs to maintain the association, therefore voluntary membership fees are welcome. Please send us an email to receive information on how to make a donation and receive a 2012 membership form.

As plans move forward with the Fairfield Park Improvement Project, we are also accepting donations towards the project. Please send us email to find out how you can make a donation. Tax receipts will be sent to you from the City of Toronto for donations over $20.

Fairfield Park Improvement Project Open House
Fairfield Seniors' Centre
Please join Councillor Peter Milczyn and City Of Toronto Landscape Architect, Eric Hess, for an open house to learn about and approve the latest changes in the Fairfield Park Improvement Project. In order to move forward with this project to create a recreational space for all residents, it is necessary to approve the plan for the park. Bring your neighbours!

Wednesday March 21st 7PM-9PM WKRA Annual General Meeting and Election

Find out what is new in the neighbourhood and any new plans for the area. Councillor Peter Milczyn will be there to answer your questions. The current WKRA executive will hold an open election for the 2012 Executive and Board of Directors, please read below if you would like to seek a position with the WKRA.

2012 WKRA Election

The following positions are open for members of the WKRA executive and Board of Directors. If you are interested in seeking a position you must:

- be a member of the WKRA for at least one year prior to 2012

- be a resident within the boundaries of the WKRA

- be at least 19 years of age (with the exception of the Youth Director)

- submit a one page maximum blurb about yourself; please include the position you seek, how long you have lived in the neighbourhood, your pertinent skills and why you should be elected. Include one reference.

The goal of the meeting is to share information with customers, discuss ongoing capital works projects and provide an opportunity to speak directly with Toronto Hydro staff.

A variety of issues that will be discussed include:

time of use rates and conservation programs
smart meters and billing
power outages
workforce renewal

It would be greatly appreciated if you can kindly help ensure that residents are aware of this meeting by spreading the word.

City Museum Closures Looming

For many of us, Montgomery's Inn has always just been part of our community. That quaint little stone building on the corner at Dundas and Islington. With the new Ford mandate, they are looking at closing a series of city operated museums and that includes our neighbourhood Montgomery's Inn.

As the Star's staff reporter, Trish Crawford puts it, "The tavern, its wooden floor worn into a deep groove at the entrance by hundreds of weary travellers, was a community hub where men and women mingled to discuss the news of the day.
Today, that news would be that Montgomery’s Inn may face the axe, along with three other small museums, Market Gallery, Gibson House and Zion Schoolhouse."

Montgomery's Inn is an important piece of our community.

The Parks Plan will guide acquisition, development, management and operation of the system of public parkland in the City of Toronto over a five-year period

On June 16^th, 2011, I hosted a neighbourhood meeting to get input from everyone in the area, find out what the community’s needs for this park are, and get your thoughts on potential future improvements. At this meeting residents put forward their wish list for the park. As you may recall this greenspace is just north of Fairfield Park and was officially purchased by the City from the TDSB last year (after they declared it surplus to their needs and were going to sell it).

At this last meeting Park Planning Staff advised that they would put together a concept plan along with costs for the various upgrades.

This plan in now available and will be available on November 3^rd for the community to review.

Please take the time to attend this meeting, see the plans, and provide your comments. ALL input is appreciated. Please feel free to contact my office if you require any information prior to this meeting or can't attend.

Community Meeting Regarding 1040 Islington Ave.

The following message is from Councillor Peter Milczyn regarding the new proposal for the site at 1040 Islington. (Premiere Fitness location) You are encouraged to come to the Community Meeting on Monday November 22nd at 7 pm at the Legion on Jutland. The proposal has not yet been passed so it is important for the community to come and express their thoughts regarding the revised proposal which is significantly different from the first proposal.
Please read below.

During the election there were many questions raised by residents about the status of this proposed development. I advised residents during the election that the Applicant had submitted a REVISED PROPOSAL to City Planning in early September and that the City would host an information night to show residents the details of this revised application this Fall.

Background:
The original application requested 1410 units. After meeting with residents earlier this year, it was made clear to the Applicants that I would NOT support their original proposal.

This REVISED application has been significantly reduced and is now requesting approval of 394 total units.

Please review the attached Community Information Meeting Notice from the Planning Department which I am sending to the Norseman Heights and surrounding area. A Notice is also being delivered door-to-door this week by the Planning Department.

The meeting is scheduled for Monday November 22nd at 7p.m at the Legion on Jutland Road. I hope you are able attend. The format for the meeting will include a history of this file, a presentation on the details of the revised application, and then allow for a Q & A from those attending.

I will be there, as will City Planning Staff, the Applicant and their Architect.

If you are unable to attend but wish to be kept informed on this application as it moves forward to being reported to Community Council or Council, please let me know and I will ensure that your name is on Planning Departments' official communications list for this project. To date, nothing has been reported to Council. I will advise residents when any reports are being tabled at Etobicoke York Community Council in 2011.

Spring Cleaning? The WKRA is organizing a weekend to let you put your useful goods to the curb. If you have some larger items that can be reused or recycled by someone else, please place them on your curb with an appropriate label ie: good condition, to be fixed, metal for recycling etc. Leave your items out between 8am on Saturday April 17 until 8pm on Sunday the 18th. Ten easy ways to save the Greenspace at Fairfield!

We are currently facing the potential loss of open space surrounding Fairfield Seniors' Centre. The lands currently owned by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), located north of the city owned park and to the west of Fairfield Seniors' Centre have been deemed surplus.

The City park containing the splash pad, swings and play stucture is owned by the city and is not for sale. The area west of the Seniors' Centre where children and adults play soccer, the parking lot and the green area just south of the centre is owned by the TDSB who are presently seeking to dispose of this land. Councillor Peter Milczyn has worked on securing most of the parking lot to be owned by the city for the use of Fairfield Seniors' Centre members and visitors. We need to work together with the Etobicoke-York Councillors and the Toronto District School Board to find a way to maintain this land for the residents to enjoy today and into the future.

WHAT CAN YOU DO??

1.Make people aware. Tell your friends and neighbours about the proposed events.
2. Make a sign to post on your lawn or in your window. SAVE THE GREENSPACE AT FAIRFIELD!

3. Become a member of the WKRA. Membership is free! Scroll down for membership form.
4. Write letters, make phone calls to the people listed below...

5. Play at the park, fly a kite, walk your dog.

6. Send emails to your friends in Toronto, the TDSB surplus lands will affect everyone.

7. Sign up to deliver flyers on your street.

9. JOIN US for a community demonstration to show city leaders how many people are in support of this land. Come to the park on Saturday April 10th between 2-4 p.m. Bring your signs for the march on Islington and through the park, wear something green in support of green space. Bring your children to play soccer on the playing field. Let's fill the whole park!

Walking Group
Please join us for our weekly walks on Tuesdays at 7pm. Meet on the pathway in Fairfield Park at the corner of Lothian and Leland (South East corner). The walk is about 35-40 minutes and ends at Lora Hill Park. Everyone welcome!

Outdoor Play Group- Play in the Park
Every Monday from 3 pm to 4:30 pm (Starting March 1st) we will be meeting at Lorahill Park (Islington & Saybrook Road) to play and connect with families in the area. Unless there is an extreme weather warning we will be there! Meet other families, get some exercise and fresh air! Fun activities will be planned on a regular basis! Age Range: All ages are welcome. Organizer families range from 1 years to 8 years of age.
