Best Practices for Your Life

Most people I’ve met as an adult tend to consider their professional and personal life as two separate realms, each with a unique set of rules, responsibilities, and rituals for achieving fulfilment, reaching goals, and finding success. It’s an emotional, intellectual, and mental separation of church and state born from the long-held assumption that business is fundamentally different from day-to-day life away from the office. I’m here to say the opposite is actually true. We might call them by different names and view them through different prisms, but the strategies employed to create a successful company are the same ones we use to build a fulfilling private life. And that’s true regardless of nationality, background, or experience.

I grew up in Moscow, Russia. My family had enough money to always have food on the table and to buy me a backpack to go to school, but we weren’t rich, so I never learned or experienced the knowledge of money. I didn’t have any affluent friends. Coming to America as a young man changed a lot of things. For the first time, I was able to meet all kinds of people in a variety of careers and pick the circle I wanted to associate with. It was a different world.

Living in the United States was more than a culture shock; it was a professional head slap and wake-up call. There was nobody to guide me, so if I wanted to succeed, I couldn’t wait around for someone to take me under their wing. I had to learn about life and business on my own.I had to figure out how to become a strong leader and build my start-up,Argus Merchant Services, into a success. At the same time, I was looking for ways to improve relationships with people and better promote myself. It didn’t take me long to realise the answer to both sets of questions was one and the same. I needed to treat my life as a business because the two are inextricably interconnected.

Everything we do in our personal lives can be approached from a business perspective. To be successful and sustainable, every business needs a vision,a carefully curated culture, and best practices implemented by several different departments—marketing, sales, human resources, accounting, finance, research and development, etc.—structured to foster growth, achieve goals, and sustain success. By following that template—by being intentional—I could meet my objectives on all fronts.

For example, take sales. Selling isn’t just getting a client to buy your product. Everyone is a salesman; you are either selling your ideas or your beliefs. It’s a basic skill that applies to all facets of life, from asking for a raise to negotiating with your teen aged child to clean their room. Once you learn how to sell yourself, you unlock the power of possibility.

As a department, human resources—charged with recruiting, hiring, training, and development of employees—is vital because a business is only as good as its people. A company with enthusiastic, engaged, and effective workers has an automatic leg up on the competition. That same principle is true with us as individuals. If you only surround yourself with negative, unambitious, or envious people, they will hold you back.Motivational speaker Jim Rohn is famous for observing: You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. By choosing positive, supportive, encouraging people, you will be more personally fulfilled and will have a strong support system for any endeavor you take on.

Another crucial life department is marketing. Just as you won’t bother to read a poorly designed, visually unappealing brochure or browse a bland web site, if you don’t market yourself properly through appearance, manner, and personality, nobody’s going to pay attention or take you seriously. That’s not just true with business associates; you won’t go on many dates either if you don’t put your best self forward.

Perhaps the most important department is research and development. All successful businesses spent a lot of time and resources on trying to get better. They never stop amassing data so that when something doesn’t work, they can pivot because they are prepared. The same is true in life. The moment you stop learning, you’re dead. It’s extremely important to keep improving your skills and adding to your knowledge every single day whether through education, experience, or even failure. If you consciously act on failure, you’ll be able to identify the reason things went wrong and analyse it to prevent the same failure from happening again in the future.

I make a point to understand the reasons behind every single time I don’t succeed, every single time I get rejected in life and in the business because it will make me stronger and a better leader, mentor, and person.

Ultimately, whatever you want to accomplish in life will benefit from utilising a business approach. If you don’t implement your personal best practices then it won’t happen. If you want opportunity, you have to create it; you must motivate yourself to improve and evolve constantly.

In short, once you start treating your life as a business, there are no limits to achieving success except those you impose on yourself.

Argus has been ranked No.64 on the Inc. 5000 and been recognized on the Entrepreneur 360.

His down-to-earth persona and topical humour have helped make Leno one of the most recognizable personalities in the business. In the ’70s, the comic toured as a stand-up — sometimes booking as many as 300 gigs annually — and made multiple appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. In the ’80s, Leno warmed Carson’s seat as the show’s regular guest host. When Carson retired in 1992, NBC passed hosting duties for The Tonight Show to Jay Leno, much to the chagrin of competitor David Letterman who had his eye on job. Leno sustained his popularity and approach-ability well into the ’00s. In 2009, Leno reluctantly agreed to step down from The Tonight Show, allowing his chosen successor, Conan O’Brien, to take over. In a surprising move, NBC offered Leno a nightly prime-time program, The Jay Leno Show. When it debuted in 2009, the show failed to gain traction and was subsequently cancelled. NBC offered to rearrange both the prime time and late-night schedules to include everyone involved, but the arrangement rattled Conan O’Brien, who eventually refused because altering the schedule would harm The Tonight Show’s long-lasting reputation. When the dust finally settled on the late-night conflict, Leno took back The Tonight Show, and Conan O’Brien left NBC. Off-screen, Leno spends his leisure time peacefully with his wife and his collection of classic cars and motorcycles.

Through her nonprofit and her DU education, Cheyenne Hunt-Majer aims to leave her mark

On Cheyenne Hunt-Majer’s first birthday, her mom presented her with a prophetic cake. “Happy birthday,” it read, “to the first lady president.”

It will take at least 13 more years before Hunt-Majer (BA ’18) can even try to live that dream — if she decides she wants to. But in the meantime, the University of Denver alumna is already laying the groundwork for a run for public office, building upon a foundation of nonprofit work and political experience.

“It was always a joke in my family that I would take an advocacy path,” Hunt-Majer says. “I rejected it for a long time. I came to DU because I wanted to be in the business school. But I’ve always been drawn to advocacy work, and I come from a long line of really strong women who did the same thing.”

Years before she set foot on the DU campus, Hunt-Majer and her mom formed a nonprofit, Women of Global Change (WGC), which Hunt-Majer still serves as youth initiative director. WGC offers free educational presentations and networking events to support and empower women in community organizing or business.

The nonprofit’s mission focuses on making change on a community level, Hunt-Majer says, whether it’s constructing housing for survivors of sex trafficking in Atlanta, funding Christmas presents for low-income women in Denver, or building a career-training center for refugees in Barcelona.

As WGC grew, Hunt-Majer continued her studies at DU. As a first-year student, she found a home within the University’s Social Justice Living and Learning Community. She switched her majors to political science and public policy, added a minor in international studies, and used what she learned to shape the way her nonprofit operates.

“It couldn’t just be voluntourism,” she says of working internationally, “just be dropping into these communities, hanging out with kids, taking pictures, dropping off supplies and leaving. We really needed to do something that was empowering them to carry on long after we were gone. And I think my time at [DU’s] international studies school really opened my eyes to the need for someone to go out there and do it differently.”

Immediately after graduating, Hunt-Majer enrolled in law school in her home state of California. In her mind, there was no question. “I knew that if I wanted to write the laws [one day],” she says, “I should definitely read them first.”

During this spring’s semester in Washington, D.C., Hunt-Majer found herself in the middle of one of the most pivotal legal fights in the country’s history. As a senior law clerk on the Senate Judiciary Committee, she worked with Minnesota Democrat Amy Klobuchar throughout the course of President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial.

Through the weeks of testimony and argument, Hunt-Majer performed legal research for Senate briefings, researched potential arguments, developed talking points, issued press releases and watched “every second” of the hearings and cable news coverage. The hours were long, sleep was scarce, and emotions ran high. And in households across the country, Americans voiced their dissatisfaction with the political system.

“I would start to get really disenchanted, and then something would happen and I’d have hope,” Hunt-Majer says. “[The impeachment proceedings] made me want to get more involved in the system, because I see how much damage has been done. The dysfunction in the Senate [changed from feeling] heartbreaking to [realizing] the privilege of my education. Why can’t I fix it? Why would I not strive to be involved?”

Hunt-Majer says she wouldn’t be surprised if she finds her way back to Capitol Hill after her law school graduation in 2021. But she also wants to stay in California, building trust, planning a run for office and managing her nonprofit.

She says the more life experience she has gained, the more she reflects on her time at DU.

“I’m realizing that it really was formative for me,” she says. “Anybody that was a part of that [social justice] LLC can tell you that you are empowered to advocate for the causes they’re passionate about. I think that made me someone who is much more willing to speak up.”

The WGC participates in communities and also International projects of betterment. We do this through many different programs, missions and adventures. We work together in business, power, and spirit. We do this to provide a better world for ourselves, other women, children, and all human-kind.

The Women of Global Change share their knowledge in our business forums, celebrate other women who actively participate in positive progress and change and we support others who are doing outreach nationally and internationally.

Several times a year we venture into other countries, where not only do we expand the levels of our own businesses, we engage in A-List networking. We tour exotic locations, embrace our leadership in business and life success, and we play a global game as we actively participate in being the change we wish to see in the world. We hope you join us on one our WGC adventures they are a once in a lifetime 5-star experience.

In this time of change we can make a difference. We can open the frontiers to new ways. The new doors of awakening as we move from competition to camaraderie and more enlightened ways of living and co-existence around the globe.

It takes all of us to make the change in the world… it takes You!

Together may we serve as a beacon of light for all that is possible.
