This poor blog has been terribly quiet of late. I feel very guilty to the readers and also the lovely craftspeople who have always emailed me with info and details to post.

The reason the blog has been neglected is because I have started doing a MA in Digital Culture through UCC. Although it was supposed to be part-time, I fear it is overwhelming me, and I can say it is nearly full time! A whole world of digital has opened up, sucking up my time either directly or indirectly. In a good way though! I would like, while I have the opportunity to do this course, to devote as much time to it as possible. So rather than let this blog just linger, I am going to close it for a few months. while I work on my project. But fear not, I hope the blog comes back bigger, and better than before!

I am directing my research into the area of activism. Using arts and crafts as a means of communication, using digital tools, to make our world a better place. Craftivitsm! So, I am not entirely devoid of craft! But more reading into the academic side of it, in the hope of becoming more proficient about being able to write and talk about it. And about why I feel it is so important for us, in this overpowering digital age. I hope to do a lot of research on social media and design tools that can help craftspeople, promote our work, and use our skills for community activism. Conservation of crafts is also a key issue for me, the conservation of skills. So history and heritage are also key points in my research.

I have had to start a new blog, and write about my research throughout the year, so I feel I must step back on the other blogging fronts,such as this blog.

When the summer is nearing its end, and the kids are getting ready to go back to school. You know its Electric Picnic time!!

Greencrafts will be making a welcome return to the festival, an exciting area that celebrates and teaches the ancient techniques and crafts of our wilder forefathers.Over the weekend there will be a host of master craftsmen and women on hand to teach traditional skills and there will be hands-on workshops with natural and sustainable materials to make something beautiful to take home with you.

We recently came across this article on 'Creative Review', about a series of Penguin books that are being re-published, with re-designed covers. Naturally enough, we love them!!

Six of Penguin's most popular recent fiction titles have been redesigned as a set with new craft-inspired covers. The Penguin By Hand series makes use of embroidery, crochet and quilting, with each technique further evoked on paper through the use of some serious embossing...

Publishing in September, the Penguin By Hand series features the following titles: The Forty Rules of Love by Elif Shafak (cover by Emma Ruth Hughes); The Help by Kathryn Stockett (cover by Brenda Riddle); The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing by Melissa Banks (cover by Genevieve Dionne); The Postmistress by Sarah Blake (cover by Jenny Hart); The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler (cover by Helen Musselwhite); and The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards (cover by Dominique Falla).

In addition to being highly tactile books, the covers are surprisingly good at replicating the media they were originally created in – for instance, Brenda Riddle's cover for The Help looks and feels as if it has been made from quilted material.

Penguin have also commissioned artist Jillian Tamaki to design hand-sewn covers of three classics: Jane Austen's Emma, Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden, and Anna Sewell's Black Beauty.

Tamaki sketched the illustrations before stitching these designs with a needle and thread. The final covers are sculpt-embossed, maintaining some of the tactile texture of the original threads designs.
Although each book is new to the Penguin Classics Deluxe series, it seems Penguin chose these three books for various unrelated reasons. This will be the first standalone edition of Emma, this year marks the centennial of The Secret Garden's publication, and Black Beauty features a new foreword written by Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley.

We recently came across an interesting Nordic website textelis.net, which has some very interesting articles on textiles and archaeology. It belongs to Viveka Hansed , a professional textile historian.

"The chosen path for my education in textile history is rare and based on a symbiosis of practical textile training within the Swedish Handicraft Association, theoretical work and academic studies primarily in the humanity subjects. Through the years I have completed further theoretical research in European collections, first and foremost in the United Kingdom and the Nordic countries. Added with textile experiments – in the areas of historical weaving, dyeing, needlework, knitting, plaiting and lace – so in the best possible way be able to develop new contexts for questions related to my work."

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council wishes to commission two visual artists to create a new body of work which will culminate in an exhibition (by each artist) in the DLR Lexicon Gallery.

The theme of the commission is to create a new body of work that is responsive to Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County. Applicants are invited to engage with the geographic, cultural and or social context of the area.

Two artists will be selected by way of an open submission selection process. Each artist will be paid a commission of €10,000 and will be given an agreed period of time to undertake the commission. The resultant artworks will be displayed in the DLR Lexicon Gallery over a five to seven week period in 2016 or 2017. Applications are invited from artists who have are living in, working in or originally from Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown or who have studied visual art in the county.

Design and Craft Council of Ireland in partnership with The National Museum of Ireland, Decorative Arts & History is seeking expressions of interest from designers and makers interested in working within the context of marking the centenary of the 1916 Rising and the theme of collective identity. The aim is to create a new contemporary collaborative design work utilising the NMI’s Decorative Arts & History Collections as a key resource.

This project involves the commissioning of a designer to create new work/s on the theme of ‘Collective Identity’, which will be displayed in an exhibtion at the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks, Dublin in 2016. The exhibition will include the designer’s own original work/s and also works created in collaboration with a group of adults, as part of a series of workshops. The combined work will be exhibited in Collins Barracks in 2016 to coincide with a conference on this theme.

A key aim of this project is to consider the theme of Irish identity in an inclusive society. We are seeking proposals from designer(s) with a track record of innovative, collaborative engagement practice within the field of design. Knitting, Yoga & Mindfulness Retreat in Iceland

1st - 6th October 2015

West Iceland is the perfect destination for a knitting retreat, because of the long-established knitting tradition in the area. This, combined with yoga, mindfulness and sightseeing will make this trip an unforgettable experience.

The knitting focus will be on the meditative qualities of knitting which allow it to be use as a mindfulness tool. The spiritual aspect is explored in our ‘loving kindness project’ intentionally infusing each stitch with hope, warmth, love, compassion and care. When the gift is received, that warmth is felt, the connection is recalled and healing takes place.

Every day will begin and end with yoga classes and one full day will be devoted to rest relaxation knitting classes and yoga practice before an evening out for dinner and a one act play at the Settlement Centre which uses theatrical and multimedia techniques to enable visitors imagine the way Iceland was discovered and then how the settlers established a new society.

We will visit interesting places, related to the rich Icelandic knitting heritage, learn about colouring yarn with dye made from Icelandic plants, have a workshop in spinning wool and learn about the Icelandic goat, an ancient domestic breed whose coarse guard hair conceals a coat of high quality cashmere fiber. We will also visit a farmers market and taste products from local farmers. On the last night we will stay at the Blue Lagoon Hotel where we will have our own private geothermal lagoon and experience the restorative benefits of ‘floating’ under a starlit sky (and see the shimmering Northern Lights if we’re really lucky!)

Passion &Legacy: Celebrating the work of the Lethbridge sisters

Ornamental Embroidery will be running a three-hour workshop inspired by the work of the Lethbridge sisters, Julia Baroness Carew (1863-1922) and Lady Jane Cory (1865-1947).

During their lifetime the sisters were famed throughout society for the needlework skills and for the scale of the embroideries they produced for Castleboro in Co. Wexford, the Carews' ancestral home, and for their town house in London.

Julia’s passion was for antique work: Italian Renaissance designs, Chinese willow pattern and crewel embroidery in the Jacobean style based on the universal symbol of the 'tree of life’. Jane preferred figurative compositions, including the work of contemporary artists and designers of the Arts and Crafts Movement, including Edward Burne-Jones, Henry Holiday and Alexander Fisher. One Wexford neighbour, Edward Richards-Orpen of Monksgrange, recalled in his memoirs, ‘To see them bending over their remarkable tapestry work was clearly pre-Raphaelite at best; the astonishing industries of [the sisters] has to be seen to be believed.’

Working in silks and wools on a linen ground specially woven at the Flax Mill, students will create a small panel inspired by the sisters’ work.Cost: £30 / €40, including materials

Bruce Clark, historian, journalist, son of Ireland’s oldest family in linen and foremost friend will give a talk during our Open Day. His fascinating presentation on linen in connection with emigration from Ulster to the “new world” during last year’s Open Day was so overcrowded that even a camera-man who was there to film him talking had no chance to get into the mill cottage.This year’s talk which will be touching on the division of labour in linen-making is going to be equally popular. We would strongly advise you to show your interest in Bruce’s talk before the Open Day so we can ensure a place for you.

We received a wonderful email from Marion Baur from Flax Mill Textiles, with their latest news. It is heartwarming to see one of the few remaining traditional linen weaving mills thriving! They have expanded their business and their workforce, bringing much needed life to a small town. Indeed, one of their projects is quite interesting. The email contained lots of news, and is full of life, so we will just quote it, rather then giving small digested tracts. From Summer events, workshops, to the local post office... Read on!

On May 3^rd Flax-Mill took over the old Post Office in Dungiven, Derry!

"...The longest standing business in the town, located on Main Street (the most frequented road in Northern Ireland) was facing closure with the owner leaving Ireland to go and live in New Zealand. Taking the place on was the result of long debates as to whether we could shoulder a venture of this size. The final decision was certainly influenced by our disgust with politicians here waffling about “saving our local economy…..halting the dying of the towns and villages…..” but doing absolutely nothing about it.

The Old Post Office, which is now a sister-company of Flax-Mill-Textiles, is trying to set a small example against the trend. We kept the three existing jobs at the place and added another one to them. For the foreseeable future we will keep the “old” lines (newsagent, confectionary store, stationary…..), our own products (both cloth and finished items) have been added.

If you are on your way from Belfast to Derry (or vice versa) the old Post Office is the place to stop! Where the postmaster used to sell stamps and weigh parcels you can now watch a weaving loom working, whilst having a cup of coffee and a slice of home-baked cake, needless to say.

The increasing number of visitors and customers over the past two months seems to prove our decision right. For a little bit of background – information see the newspaper report “the return of textile in Dungiven” on our internet-page (www.flaxmill-textiles.com).

New Old Looms at the Flax-Mill.

We have just purchased 12(!!) machine looms, several of which will be used to increase the cloth-making capacity at Derrylane. The oldest of these beauties was made in 1901, the youngest one in 1947. They are unique machines, will stand a bit of restoration but should be having the shuttles flying soon. At our Open Day on Sept. 12^th you will be able to inspect the first one in working order!

Flax Mill Berlin is moving premises!

Some of you already know this, friends have purchased an amazing property outside the city and though procedures are taking a little longer than planned (what’s new?) we will soon be able to announce all the details about our new home in Germany!

The blood-pressure is beginning to rise and things are shaping beautifully – that’s the general mood we can tell you about. After last year’s record attendance and indescribably good atmosphere we know now for sure that we will have to shift up a gear once more (if that is possible). The buzz is mighty and at this stage, with 2 months to go we have more people booked to attend, demonstrate, bring their unique products, and take part in the concert….than ever before and from all corners of the globe!

We love coming across some unusual textile activity online. Especially when its tactile and animated. We recently spotted these on This is Colossal, and just fell in love with them!! These were made by Elliot Schultz for his final project in college.

"...My work aims to investigate the use of unconventional media in both the production and presentation of animated work. Early pioneers of the art form experimented with the combination of hand drawn animation and live action performances, demonstrating the natural inclusiveness of animation which invites a wide variety of media to be used in the creation process.

Inspired by the work of Alexandre Alexeieff and Claire Parker, I aimed to guide my production process indirectly through the limitations afforded by alternative media. Their invention, the pin screen, was used as the sole medium in the production of six short films, and shaped the outcome of their work. In response, I have designed and embroidered animated sequences onto discs, similar to the Phenakistokope, Zoopraxiscope and Stamfer Disc layouts. This repurposing of media introduced strict parameters, namely spatial, tonal and temporal, and has greatly informed all stages of my process..."

INTRODUCTION TO TEXTILE PRINTING TECHNIQUES

Monday evenings 6.30pm – 9.15pm + Saturday 10.30am – 4.30pm

This introductory course to printed textiles covers all the basics and more to get you started in textile printing. You will explore a variety of printing techniques, including: block printing; screen-printing using paper stencils; screen-printing using the photo sensitive technique as well as screen and image preparation, colour mixing, and fixing and caring for printed fabrics. The course will equip you with a good understanding of all the processes involved, which most importantly can even be adapted for working on at home. Suitable for beginners. A basic supply of materials is included in fee.

SCREEN PRINTING ON FABRIC: PHOTO STENCIL TECHNIQUE
2 day workshop

10.30am – 4.30pm

A 2-day course focusing on the photo stencil technique of screen printing (a durable semi permanent stencil). Participants will learn how to prepare and create b&w images for screen using hand drawn or digital imagery, as well as experimenting with different printed imagery, print surfaces, registration, colour-layering and mixing and much more. A thorough introduction for those wishing to begin screen-printing on fabric or those looking to refresh their skills. A basic supply of materials is included in fee.

Two-day dressmaking workshop on Tuesday and Wednesday 28 & 29 July, catering for all levels. We will teach you how to use a sewing machine, take correct body measurements, interpret patterns, lay out and cut patterns, pin and sew the garment and alter to fit. Sewing machines are supplied or bring your own. Includes light lunch!
