FREE workshops and training opportunities for people looking to start their own business have been organised by Uttlesford District Council.

The authority’s economic development officer, Simon Jackson, said there had never been a better time for people to start a business – sighting Uttlesford’s many small businesses as a key part of the district’s rural economy.

“Some of the best ideas for a business and most robust businesses are created when the economy is struggling with people really focusing on their business model, rather than assume that there is a market for their product or service that can happen in more buoyant times,” he explained.

“Having access to high-quality advice and then acting upon it can be the difference between make or break for someone starting a business.”

The ‘Be Your Own Boss’ all-day workshop will give anyone who wants to get their business right and potentially thrive. This will be held in the town hall on February 8 and covers topics including writing your business plan, setting up a website and basic book-keeping.

Three workshops will be run to give help people planning to become self-employed and those keen to start their own business.

A half-day workshop titled ‘Create a Business Idea’ has been designed for people who have the desire to start a business and the council has assured that anyone who goes along will walk away with at least one tangible idea. This takes place on February 15 at the town hall in Saffron Walden from 9am-12.30pm. It will cover where new ideas come from and what makes a good idea, along with other topics.

Both of these workshops are free but booking is essential. The number of places is limited to ensure each participant gains as much as possible.

Anyone on Job Seeker’s Allowance will also be given the opportunity to attend a fully-funded Business Planning Course, beginning with a ‘Taster Workshop’ on January 30 in Saffron Walden Town Hall from 9am-4pm.

Canon “Explorer of Light” Photographer will demonstrate his skills teaching and capturing the action of nautical photography for both amateur and professional photographers.

Onne van der Wal has been photographing boats and the nautical world for over 25 Years and is famous for having mastered the art of this difficult medium. Despite his notoriety as one of the top marine photographers in the world, van der Wal is known also for his “Workshops on the Water” and his easy, accessible teaching style wherein he shares tips and tricks in small groups, helping budding photographers get great shots in the challenging marine environment. Scott Cluett, a three-time attendee of the Workshops shares: “Not only is Onne’s teaching informative, but he is very approachable and easy to understand. Onne’s workshops foster a real learning experience with a very personal touch and small groups offer plenty of time and attention for everyone.” After four successful years of teaching water based photography workshops, van der Wal announces his 2013 schedule of workshops stretching from the tropical blue waters of the Caribbean to his home waters of Narragansett Bay and Newport, RI.

Van der Wal’s 2013 Workshop schedule begins with the Heineken St. Maarten Regatta from February 28-March 4th. A very small group of 4-6 advanced photographers will be treated to some of the best grand prix sailboat racing offered in the Caribbean and will be positioned on a chase boat alongside Onne right on the race course to capture the action and adventure on camera. Three full days of shooting as well as evaluative time for reviewing the days work and discussing workflow round out a schedule that includes nightly concerts and parties offered by the regatta organizers.

Back in his home waters of Newport, RI, van der Wal’s well known “Workshop on the Water” series will return for Summer 2013 with two intermediate to advanced level classes scheduled aboard the beautifully restored and very stable touring lobster boat, The M/V “Gansett.” A workshop shooting Narragansett Bay’s many lighthouses and active local racing scene is scheduled for July 24th for up to 15 photographers, as well as a fall workshop on Saturday September 28th shooting the picturesque 12 Metre North American Championships. Workshops are four hours and include a lobster roll dinner, snacks and cocktails. Onne provides live commentary on a loudspeaker and many excellent photo ops while directing the Captain of the “Gansett” to his preferred angles, getting close to the action and providing all on board with a unique vantage point. Keeping the groups small ensures personal instruction from Onne on how to meter, frame and set up the shots using your own equipment. He also lends out his Canon “L” series lenses to those shooting with Canon bodies.

As a six year veteran of the esteemed Canon “Explorer of Light” program, van der Wal is encouraged to lecture and teach as much as possible and it is a part of the job as “Explorer” that van der Wal finds most rewarding; “I’m excited to offer our very well received workshops to as many photographers as possible. It’s a part of my job that is very enjoyable: sharing my knowledge, my gear and my enthusiasm for shooting on the water.”

Shooting straight: Workshops will be conducted to help Palm Portraits contestants hone their photograhy skills.

PARTICIPANTS in the Palm Portraits photo contest organised by the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) can get to attend photography workshops conducted by the Nikonian Academy.

The MPOC is sponsoring three workshops to help participants boost their chances of winning in the competition that offers RM5,000 as the top prize.

The workshops will be conducted by Nikonian Academy founder and director Andrew Boey, who is also a commercial photographer specialising in portrait, fashion, beauty and macro beauty photography.

For Palm Portraits participants, the Nikonian Academy will hold two workshops on Taking Inspiring Product Photos (for poignant close-ups and still-life shots) and one on Capturing Impressive Outdoor Shots (for scenery shots).

Launched in October last year, the Palm Portraits photo contest is open to the public.

The photos can portray anything and everything related to palm oil and its industry, from the fruit and tree to an entire plantation, the by-products or something totally creative.

Participants need to submit a caption explaining the photo and they may be on the way to winning the contest, which offers attractive cash prizes, and photography workshops by the Beyond Photo-graphy Academy.

The first prize is RM5,000 plus two photography classes worth RM780; second prize is RM3,000 plus one photography class worth RM390, and third prize is RM2,000 and two photography workshops.

There will be also a Judges’ Choice Award and the People’s Choice Award.

All winning entries will be published in a coffeetable book. Winners will be selected via a combination of public online voting and judging by a panel of judges.

The top 30 shortlisted entries will be showcased in a national exhibition before the announcement of the main winners.
