Tips for Solving Algebra Word Problems

Many people have trouble with Algebra for various reasons. Perhaps the teacher isn’t doing a great job explaining concepts, the textbook is not so great or the student is not doing enough practice. Algebra is quite easy once you get the hang of it.

In order to master algebra, you need to have a really good book or a few good books. There are also many resources online that can help you with topics you need extra help with. It is important to do a lot of practice immediately after learning a concept until the problems become easy for you to do.

Word problems, especially, seem to give a lot of students a hard time. Here are some tips on how to tackle them. Re-read the question as many times as you need to in order to understand exactly what you need to solve for and the best way to approach the problem. When you figure those out, assign the unknown or what you are trying to solve for to a variable such as x. Next you need to form algebraic expressions or equations using the information that is given, as well as your variable or variables. With the equations you can then solve for your variables using elimination, substitution, formulas and other solving methods in algebra.

Here are some examples of statements in algebra and how to convert them into an algebraic expression.

John is twice as old as Mary can be written as y=2x where y is John’s age and x is Mary’s age. Two consecutive integers can be written as x and x+1. Two consecutive even integers can be written as x and x+2 as long as x is an even number. If the sum of two numbers are 51 then the two numbers are x and 51-x. If x is a number then five more than twice a number is 2x+5.

You also need to be aware of units of measure. Make sure all the units match. For example, if you are given three numbers, two in inches and one in feet, you must covert the one in feet into inches before you can use all three numbers together to solve the unknown. A common word problem that involves converting units of measure is the coin problem. For example, Mary has several coins in her pocket including dimes, nickels, and quarters. She has three more quarters than nickels and twice as many nickels as dimes. Let’s say she has a total of $2.15.

The first thing to do is to figure out which type of coin she has the least amount of. In this case she has less dimes than nickels and quarters so let x be dimes. Since she has twice as many nickels as dimes, nickels are 2x. Since she has three more quarters than nickels and we know nickels are 2x, quarters are 2x+3. Notice we wrote quarters and nickels in terms of dimes so we can use just one variable. Now we need to convert the expressions into cents. To convert a dime into cents you multiply by 10. So we have 10x. To convert nickels into cents you multiply by 5. We have 5(2x). To convert quarters to cents multiply by 25. So we have 25(2x+3). To covert $2.15 to cents multiply by 100 to get 215 cents. Add these three expressions, set them equal to 215 and solve for x. You should get x= 2. This means she has 2 dimes, 4 nickels and 7 quarters.

In a nutshell, when given a word problem, re-read it until you fully understand what it implies. Assign a variable(s) to the unknown. Convert the statements into algebraic expressions or equations and use them to solve for the unknown. With plenty of practice you’ll become proficient at solving algebra word problems.

Serena william penalty loses match

New York: Kim Clijsters reached the US Open final after beating defending champion Serena Williams 6-4 7-5 Saturday in a contest that ended in chaos after the American was handed a point penalty on match point.

With the Belgian on the brink of victory, second seed Williams was called for a foot-fault on a second serve to go match point down. An angry Williams argued with the lineswoman who reported her for verbal abuse.

Having already received a warning earlier in the match for smashing a racket, Williams was handed an automatic point penalty for a second violation which gave Clijsters the match.

"It was not a default, it was a point penalty that happened to be on match point. She had had an earlier warning for racket abuse,"tournament referee Brian Earley told reporters.

"She was called for a foot fault... and she said something to a line umpire and it was reported to the chair and that resulted in a point penalty."

Early would not go into what Williams said, adding only: "It was a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct."

Serving at 5-6 15-30 down in the second set, Williams launched into her second serve only for the lineswoman at the baseline to call her for a foot-fault.

Incensed by the verdict, a fired up Williams marched up to the official, and waving her racket threateningly, she argued with her for making the call at such a crucial moment as the double fault gave Clijsters match point.

The woman walked straight to the umpire, who summoned Earley on to court as jeers started to ring around a half-filled Arthur Ashe Stadium.

With Williams joining the group at the bottom of the umpire's chair, she was heard telling the lineswoman: "I never said I would kill you, are you serious?"

After consulting Earley, the umpire announced Williams had been given a point penalty and awarded the match to Clijsters, who stood on the other side of the net looking bewildered.

"I was just trying to be focussed for the match point. As I started to get ready for the return I saw Serena talking to the lineswoman over there," Clijsters said in a courtside interview.

"I was obviously too far away to hear what was going on so I can't really comment on that."

The Belgian, playing in only her third tournament after taking a two-year break to start a family, became the first mother to reach a grand slam final since Evonne Goolagong achieved the feat at Wimbledon in 1980.

In Sunday's final, Clijsters will face Danish teen-ager Caroline Wozniacki, who defeated unseeded and error-prone Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 6-3 6-3 in the other semi-final.

Torrents are great, they are the best way to share large files with your friends, or even with people you don’t know at all. But surprisingly enough, not many people create torrents when they need to share something. I have “a lot of” friends who know how to download torrents, but when they need to send me their latest 200MB vacation picture collection, they ask me to “get on msn”.

It’s not that I have anything against msn (although the file transfer sucks), but why don’t just use BitTorrent? Especially if you want to send something to more than one person, or if you want to share high quality HDTV files, because then you can share the bandwidth.
So how do you do this? Well it’s very simple. Open your favorite BitTorrent client and do the magic trick:
file > create torrent
That’s all? Well almost. All you need to do now is put in the tracker info and tick some boxes. This can differ somewhat from client to client but it all comes down to the same thing.

The Global Positioning System, usually called GPS, is the only fully-functional satellite navigation system. A constellation of more than two dozen GPS satellites broadcasts precise timing signals by radio to GPS receivers, allowing them to accurately determine their location (longitude, latitude, and altitude) in any weather, day or night, anywhere on Earth.

United States Department of Defense developed the system, officially named NAVSTAR GPS (Navigation Signal Timing and Ranging GPS), and the satellite constellation is managed by the 50th Space Wing at Schriever Air Force Base. Although the cost of maintaining the system is approximately US$400 million per year, including the replacement of aging satellites, GPS is available for free use in civilian applications as a public good.

GPS has become a vital global utility, indispensable for modern navigation on land, sea, and air around the world, as well as an important tool for map-making, and land surveying. GPS also provides an extremely precise time reference, required for telecommunications and some scientific research, including the study of earthquakes.

In late 2005, the first in a series of next-generation GPS satellites was added to the constellation, offering several new capabilities, including a second civilian GPS signal called L2C for enhanced accuracy and reliability. In the coming years, additional next-generation satellites will increase coverage of L2C and add a third and fourth civilian signal to the system, as well as advanced military capabilities.

The Wide-Area Augmentation System (WAAS), available since August 2000, increases the accuracy of GPS signals to within 2 meters (6 ft) [1] for compatible receivers. GPS accuracy can be improved further, to about 1 cm (half an inch) over short distances, using techniques such as Differential GPS (DGPS).

YSR Andhra Pradesh crash

The last rites of the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajsekhar Reddy will be held with full state honours at his native place Pulivendula in Cuddapah district on Friday.

According to sources the burial of the departed Chief Minister will be held at around 2 pm. Before that, the dead chief minister’s body will lie in state at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium from Friday morning till about 1 pm to allow the general public and the political leadership to pay their last respects. It will then be flown to his native village in Cuddapah District for final rites.

The charred and decomposed bodies of Reddy and four others were airlifted by an Indian Air Force helicopter to state capital, where autopsy was conducted.

The Andhra Pradesh Government has declared seven days state mourning in honour of YSR and cancelled all the official programmes in the state and the national flag will be hoisted at half-mast.

SEO and Keyword Density

Every web designer knows that there are two essential qualities in every good website - appearance and how it performs in the search engines. There is no doubt it is critically important for pages to look good so they keep visitors on the page. But visitors will never arrive at the site to appreciate even the best design without search engine optimization (SEO). Integrating these fundamentals of effective website design can be complex, and compromises are almost always required.

While Yahoo! and Google and also take other factors into account, no aspect of your web pages is more important to their ranking than keyword density. What is keyword density It’s a simple percentage of the total words on a page that are keywords. Keyword density that produces high page rankings is generated by a small selection of highly searched keywords that do not have high competition. For the most frequently searched keywords, as many as 100,000 sites will be vying for position. Frequently searched keywords can bring you high page rankings, but they demand longer-term commitments and more resources.

A successful site has to have enough content to allow for appropriately low keyword density. Unlike the ranking standards of the late 1990s, search algorithms in 2009 penalize sites, and sometimes penalize them very severely, for cramming too many search terms into too little text. Content must long enough to dilute keyword density, but concise enough to hold visitor attention. It is also not possible to make use of every screen shot or image you might happen to have, no matter how attractive and beautiful they are, on every page, or even on every site. The search algorithms have not yet designed means of indexing images. Words, and not images, are what drive SEO. That is the reason every designer has to provide every site multiple pages with text that can be optimized.

The next step in integrating web design and SEO is to tag all each image on the site with the “alt” tag in HTML. Every image has to have this tag. The “alt” tag enables to instruct the web browser as to which text will pop up when visitors run their mouse over your image. Every image also requires an SEO-friendly title. For instance if your site is about sunning on the beach in Aruba, and you want to use a photo of a beach on your page, a name like aruba.beach.wow.jpg isfar more effective than an name like 477876arub9wow.jpg. Keywords in your tags become keywords for your pages. Just take care not make your pages too keyword-dense with image names, either.

Another important consideration in placing keywords on your pages for purposes of SEO is where you place the keywords. Search engines give you more credit for keywords in titles and headers than within paragraphs. That is why it is important that you get put as many of your keywords in these prominent positions as possible.

How many keywords can you include your homepage Your list range anywhere from 3 to 10 or even 20, as long as you have enough content to keep the percentage keywords acceptably low. The most competitive niches almost always require a narrow focus to ensure that your content is what your visitors are searching for. On the other hand, an excessively narrow focus can eliminate certain visitors before they have a chance to search for your site, so be on the lookout for ways to place additional keywords on your page without triggering spam filters.

Always take care that the search engines do not mistake your content for spam. Beyond keeping within the 7% limit, your respect for your readers and your providing genuinely content will make all the difference in how well your site will perform.

In exchange for these discounts and grocery cards, many companies collect information about buying habits and average spending amounts, the better to tailor advertisements and better-focus future promotional efforts.

Once a consumer is hooked, brand loyalty tends to result in higher sales volume, as well as loyal customers being less sensitive to price changes of their favorite brands (within reason, of course), as well as less sensitive to competitors’ incentives. Studies have shown that it takes 5 times as much money to gain a customer as it does to retain one. That’s 5 times as much money as could have been spent on other things.

A brand is who your company is, and what it is selling–it is as important as naming a baby, and should require the same amount of effort to develop it, but if done well, can mature into a successful and profitable adult.

So you’ve decided to start your own business - congratulations! It’s a huge leap from letting someone else take care of taxes, accounting, payroll, inventory, and/or a myriad of other activities necessary to run a business.

However, running your own business has its advantages, too. You get to be your own boss, set your own hours and days to work, and are responsible for your own success. It can be a great way to free yourself from the tedium of 9-5 and work at doing what you love, but you have to begin by asking a few questions:

1. Are you doing what you love, or just doing something you’re good at? A desire to get away from the regular working world can be a good motivation to work for yourself, but you have to be excited to get up in the morning to do what it is you have chosen to do for a living.

2. What is it you are planning to do? What niche is it going to fill? Is there a need for what you can provide? Will the market bear another entry?

3. What technical skills or talents do you have? Just being able to do something may not be marketable enough to convince customers or financiers that you are a good financial investment.

4. Who are your competitors in your chosen profession and how are you going to do it better? Why should customers come to you? What do you have to offer that no one else does?

Once you are satisfied with the answers to these questions, it is time for the decision of what kind of business structure you will use. Will you be a sole proprietor, responsible for every facet and the penultimate authority as to how to run the business? Will you enter in with a partner, the better to share the cost and workload, but also the profits and the business decisions?

Perhaps the decision will be made to incorporate, with its financial safeguards but more complex and costly structure? At this stage, legal advice is recommended, if only so that you fully understand the advantages and disadvantages of your chosen structuring plan. Many lawyers will provide a free or reduced-rate primary consultation, though often not more than an hour.

When the structure is finalized, a name for the business should be decided upon, if not already having been done so in advance. It should be easy to remember, avoid initials and single letters (B & L & R, Inc. will be difficult to remember for customers) and try to say something about the business (Bob’s House of Hobbies is easier to remember and spell).

Next, a business plan is a vital step in laying out all these topics and proposals in a standardized format. A good business plan serves as a formal statement of the new company’s goals, financing, structure and legal considerations. It acts as a “resume” to prospective investors and is the primary documentation they will use to evaluate whether or not your business will be worth investing into. It also provides the proprietor(s) with a chance to see the workings of the new business in black and white.

A basic business plan should at the least contain a balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flow, as well as a proposed financial budget for the first year, or as long a period as necessary if a year is impractical.

Several times over the past few weeks, I’ve been asked what advice I would give to affiliate marketers who are just starting out and trying to learn the ropes. During my time at ClickBank, I’ve seen many affiliates go from knowing very little about what they should be doing to being extraordinarily successful. While every affiliate’s path to success will be different, as I’ll explain below, there are several general pieces of advice that I think can benefit every affiliate marketer. I hope they’ll be useful in helping you on your journey to affiliate marketing success.

Treat affiliate marketing as your job- I can’t stress this point enough. While the ultimate goal of most affiliate marketers is to eventually make enough money to only have to work an hour or two a day (and there are many who do), one key to starting off well in affiliate marketing is to work as hard as you would at any other job. The most successful affiliate marketers start out by putting in long hours and doing lots of work on their promotional efforts, both in studying effective methods and actually putting them into practice. If you work 8 hours a day doing affiliate marketing, you’re going to be successful a lot sooner than if you only work 1 or 2 hours a day. Even if you’re doing affiliate marketing part-time, the more time you spend on it, the more successful you’re likely to be.
Do what you’re good at- Affiliate marketing takes a lot of work, but one of the best parts of being an affiliate marketer is the freedom to choose how and when you work, what products you want to promote, etc. One of the best ways to avoid burnout, especially when you’re not yet making good money, is to choose promotional techniques that fit your personal style. Not everyone is a great writer, or even enjoys writing. If this describes you, you’re probably better off avoiding article marketing, which requires you to write large quantities of high-quality content. If you’re not the most social person and prefer anonymity, you probably won’t enjoy social media marketing very much. Since one of the main reasons for doing affiliate marketing is so you can work how you want to work, it’s important to figure out what suits your style and personality. Your work will be better, and you’ll be more willing to stick with it, if you’re enjoying yourself.
Recognize that there are many ways to succeed as an affiliate- Since many new affiliates start out by reading books or following programs created by affiliate marketing experts, they think that these techniques may be the only way to make a lot of money and do well in the business. I’ve met many successful affiliates, and they’ve gotten to where they are today by many different paths. What works for one affiliate may not work at all for another, and there are always new tools, techniques, product niches, etc, being developed that can completely change the affiliate marketing game. Never be afraid to branch out on your own or try a crazy idea that you think just might work. Don’t be afraid to fail, because when you make mistakes you’ll figure out what works and what doesn’t, making you more successful in the long run. There’s a lot to learn in the business, so the sooner you start making mistakes, the sooner you’ll start learning what works!

The intellectual value that blogs and bloggers bring as info-media is immense in India. They present thought leadership not only with regards to their own niches but of blogging as a powerful medium as a whole. At a certain point of time the Indian blogosphere was the new measure of intelligentsia of the country. However for reasons that vary from exhaustion to newer tools to a general lack of ideas blogs haven’t gone beyond the mainstream peak they seemed to have reached back in early 2000 s.

The number of bloggers in India have gone up for sure, which perhaps is the reason many popular bloggers began to shift to newer media like Twitter for self expression and continue their early adopter aura. So while the numbers improved the influence to a certain extent decreased. This however is a debatable point, and anyway doesn’t hold considerable value in the actual topic of this post.

What does hold a lot of value though is the stagnation that blogs are stuck in since quite a while. How we blogged 7 years back and how we do now has not seen any considerable difference except for newer designs and platforms. This when globally blogs have been spearheading the new publication wave and real time information and analysis. While there are a lot of blogs that might be doing it, none of them (including this humble blog here) has achieved mainstream glory to the point of being a social influence.

Obviously this would also mean better returns for bloggers who can then provide more time and effort to blogging which is better for the blog. Marketing can be better using the various topics at hand for niche targeting and using each others real estate for cross promotion on a larger level.

It is a pity that weblogs network sold for millions of dollars way back in 2005 and we are still at a stage where a blog publisher can barely earn a decent living through blogging alone even now.

What blog publishers need to do is unite, we need blog leadership to emerge from the plethora of bloggers around who can consolidate the space. While ad networks targeting niche blogs and bringing them under a common monetary umbrella is good, it is not the right dose for the Indian blogosphere at the moment. It is about time the talent found aplenty is organized and professionalized to improve public perception of blogging. Then the opinions and views and the analysis will begin to hold a lot more weight in the society which further propels the role blogs will play in new media as new media.

The Google News home page is a good place to go to find headlines from publications around the world. But what if you're interested in the work of a specific journalist in addition to perspectives from different publications? Last Thursday, we launched a feature that highlights the contributions of journalists everywhere by allowing you to find more articles by individual reporters.

If you spot an article by a specific journalist, you can click their name to bring up other articles they've written:

You can also search for articles by a specific journalist under Advanced Search or by searching their name after "author:" in the Google News search box. For example, this feature allows you to follow the most recent stories by your favorite columnists or local journalists. Here I searched for content by Seattle Post-Intelligencer columnist Joel Connelly:

As with any search on Google News, you can sign up to get the latest results through an RSS feed or email alerts.

We're constantly working to increase the ways in which you can interact with the news, and we hope you'll like the new ability to search by author. With over 25,000 news sources crawled on Google News, we value the diversity of perspectives on the news, but there's also something to be said for being able to find and follow the voices of the journalists you like best!

Last September on this blog, we announced a new initiative to digitize newspapers and make them accessible and searchable online.

We've recently updated our index, quadrupling the number of articles included in News Archive Search. We now include articles from several new publications, including the Halifax Gazette,Sydney Morning Herald, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and the Village Voice. Working with our partners, we've also added new international publications such as the Manila Standard,The Nation from Thailand, and many others.

Looking for a place to start exploring this rich historical index? How about the complete June 2, 1753 edition of the Halifax Gazette, one of the oldest newspapers we've digitized to date.

News Archive Search is an ongoing effort, and we're continuing to work with publishers to add new materials. You can explore this historical treasure trove by searching on News Archive Search or by using the timeline feature after searching on Google News.
