Salt (….without Pepper)

No…we are not talking about recipe. I spent my last evening of Eid holiday watching “Salt” dvd I bought a day before, a movie starred by Angelina Jolie, she’s such a beautiful woman indeed. Look at the pictures bellow, Angelina Jolie takes a break on the set of her movie Salt to enjoy a slice of chocolate cake.

She makes me hungry….all right then, I am taking my own cake.

Back to the movie, Salt is another espionage movie with tense from beginning, but who is Evelyn Salt that’s the question. Audience is placed into puzzle, wondering the mystery of Salt. I think I have 6th sense because somehow I knew how the story will lead to the end, it’s actually pretty easy to guess, a very light and simple movie.

Salt is quite entertaining especially when you enjoy it with fruity yogurt and snacks (cashew nuts !!) just like I did, lol. How I love yogurt with slices of mango, very refreshing…..

And tomorrow..…back to work, isn’t life beautiful ? hehe…… :x

Disaster Dine Out

I couldn’t take all the Eid food anymore so I had fried sausage and fried egg for breakfast. Therefore, I went out on 3 pm by the 3rd day of Eid. My initial plan was eating gado-gado or vegetables salad with spicy peanut sauce at es teler 77 PS mall. I stood on the queue line and read the menu to find they didn’t put it in the list. Too lazy to ask I left the crowd and thinking that hot ramen would be perfect for today. I took my seat on the red sofa at Noodle Cafe and hoping this time would be better than my last visit (read here). But then my disaster menu orders come as follow :

This mango blended looks terrible, yellow pale and no fragrant smell. It doesn’t tempting at all, haaa… I know what you are thinking !! mmm I cheers my self with a bottle of green tea in my plastic bag.

The next order is popiah, its a fried basket/ cup stuffed with vegetables and chicken. I was expecting fried siomay because I swear it looked like siomay on the menu picture. I cheers my self by thinking of hot ramen in a big bowl.

Once again……they surprised me with this flat plate !! It’s not a bowl. Yes, this ramen is only dry noodle covered by omelet. I should blame my eyes for being misunderstood with the pictures on menu. This strange ramen taste like plain spaghetti and plain omelet, wait….I think I see something in the omelet….a very small thin slice of …mushroom….that’s all !! To add some taste I pour the rest of popiah filling and mix them with the noodle. Horrible !!

By the end of the day, I cheers my self with : Angela’s Ashes book, Salt Dvd, a big pack of Milo, red bell pepper, broccoli and a bottle of cold green tea.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner on Eid

Yep…...we eat the same menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner during Eid. It could be at least for 2 days, imagine the thick and fatty food made from coconut milk based like rendang (spicy beef) and fried chicken.…so on 3rd day usually I’ll be craving for instant noodle.

Ketupat : rice wrapped with coconut leaves. This is the biggest difference between ordinary day and Eid. No idea how this tradition started, but on Eid, every house has ketupat as the substitute of plain rice.

The side dishes could be rendang, fried chicken, opor ayam, sayur buncis, sambal goreng ati….hehee… and because we cannot live without pempek, we must serve pempek on this special day.

Triple Chocolate

I ordered this beautiful cake for EID,but the cake is a bit disappointing because its below my expectation. I thought the filling layers were made of melted chocolate but the fact is that they are only chocolate cream. I’ve confirmed before and they said yes it is chocolate, that was the reason to order. Anyway, its already on the table so no other choice than to eat it.

Next year, I dont want to order this cake anymore, simple blackforest will be just fine.

This is a perfect sample of : “dont judge cake from its decorations”

New Catering (again…!!)

Couldn’t remember how many times we changed catering service for lunch in office. Last time we subscribed for only less than 2 weeks. Classic reasons ; weird taste, boring menu, unclean lunch box & feel like prison lunch.

I am bored with the same question on every 11 pm, “ What’s for today’s lunch ? “ And then we will open the menu book from foodcourt, call them to deliver and wait for almost an hour. Started from yesterday, we tried this new catering recommended by Mrs. Putri. For Rp. 8.000,- we got a set of lunch box plus juice.

Yesterday menu was shrimp tempura, but I avoided shrimp so they changed my shrimp with chicken. The juice was orange, a very very liquid orange juice, well…what can you expect more from a cheap lunch....hehe…

Today menu : fried fish fillet, tumis kangkung & watermelon juice (yaaa....another very liquid juice). For tomorrow, it will be black pepper beef. So, let’s see how long this catering service could survive in my office,

Pizza Lunch Breaks Boredom

Sometime its very hard to decide what to eat for lunch. There are not many variations around the office.

Finally that day, we went to Pizza Hut at the PIM mall just to kill the boredom.

Its located on the first floor of the mall, not too spacious that you need to wait outside when you order take away.

You can guess the main menu is pizza, we chose the medium super supreme. But we also had some others menu. I was a little bit upset when I couldn’t find the spicy tuna fucili, they have erased it from the menu list. So, in exchange, I ordered beef lasagna.

My beef lasagna was OK, very creamy and cheesy. For the drink, I had the hot cappucino. Perfecto ….

I also tasted the mushroom cream soup belong to Mrs. Fauziah and the beef spaghetti of Mrs. Linda. Now all the pasta menu have no more small or large size choice, all are on the same portion.

Lontong Medan for Breakfast

One of the officer was transferred to other big city, which he always wanted to go there. It’s like his wishes come true. As a part of being gratitude, he brought this homemade lontong/ rice cake for everyone in office. His wife is from medan, north sumatera and prepared this delicious breakfast. Its a quite complete breakfast, too many in it, the rice cake, boiled egg, shrimps, oyster, fried peanut, fried soybean cake, salty fish, some vegetables, cracker, thin noodle. Love it……

Emilee Grilled Ribs for Free

Once in a while, we had free lunch. Mostly free lunch box for someone’s birthday treat in office. But by the beginning of last January, we had invitation for free lunch at Emilee Grilled Ribs. The restaurant belong to one of debtor’s daughter, the location is about 10 minutes from my home.

We took the table on second floor where they have a corner for karaoke. There was no other customers but us. Some people were eating on first floor. It was a little bit confusing because the parking area is behind the restaurant.

Their main menu are grilled ribs, soup, fish and shrimps. So we order, spicy grilled ribs, black pepper grilled ribs, grilled shrimps, konro soup, fried gurame fish, cha kangkung. Here are the pictures :

The ribs looks nice, but the taste is somewhere in between….its like almost tasteless because I was expecting strong spicy ribs, but the chili sauce was fine. The konro soup could be the worst !! However, its free lunch,…

Bread Fruit’s Tragic Story

One day, the office boy found 2 bread fruits in the pantry. He asked everyone who left the fruits there. No one admitted. The office boy decided to fry one fruit for the afternoon snack. I told him that one is not enough for the whole office mates, why don’t you fry one and half fruit, I told him. But he replied that less snack is better than too much because less could left the taste curiosity.

So he cut the bread fruit into very thin slices and soaked them in salty water. When he fried the slices, the aroma was spreading all in the air. We couldn’t wait for the crispy fried bread fruit. It was so tasty when we bite the hot newly fried. The golden brown color was so temping. 2 plates of fried bread fruit gone in an instant.

While we were still compliment the taste of this bread fruit, the office boy shouted, “ they belong to Mr. Irfani…” , one of clerk in other unit who was visiting our office that day. Mr. Irfani asked the office boy that he put two bread fruits in the pantry because he didn’t want to left them on his motorbike (he was afraid that someone could take the fruits), but why now only one fruit left…

Oh…this is tragic

Sherlock Holmes is always be my hero

I read lot of the books when I was younger.

Last 2 weeks, our old friend Desy treated us to watch Sherlock Holmes movie and then continued with free lunch at Ketty’s Resto at PIM, what a great weekend..lol. The movie was good, I enjoyed Sherlock Holmes humor not to mention the handsome Dr. Watson. About the food after movie, well…here are the pictures :

We had rice, fried calamari, fried silk tofu ala ketty, soto babat/ organs soup with coconut based and bok coy vegetable.

From all, I like the fried silk tofu ala Ketty the most, the sauce with mushroom and chopped of seafood was nice, almost the same as tofu ala brasserie bistro. Not bad, especially it was a treat , lol.

Noodle Cafe @ Palembang Square

I had a hard time in deciding which noodle that I want to order. Couldn’t choose between ramen or vietnamese noodle. Why ramen, because I like that movie – Ramen Girl, starred by Brittany Murphy –but I also want to try the vietnamese noodle because I’ll be travelling in Vietnam sooner or later, lol. My friend, Lisa, suggest me a very brilliant idea, just order both and problem solved.

The real problems are coming next, the waiter said they don’t sell ramen today and no seafood supply in the kitchen so all menus containing seafood are disabled or if you are insist they will substitute with beef or chicken. A little bit disappointed but we are already here.

While waiting the arrival of our pregnant friend, Desi, please have a look at the cafe room, black and red are the most dominating colors and they have free wifi :

Ok, now let’s have the drink first :

Mineral water is a must, Lisa drinks this chocolate milkshake with ice cream, nice presentation and the chocolate tastes genuine, lol

Desi is having the strawberry blended and I am trying the banana split. I am not too impressed with the banana split, its away far from expectation, they chopped the banana into small thin slices…can you just imagine that ? but the strawberry blended is fine.

The real foods are coming as follow, for the appetizer : Gyoza or fried dumpling with veggies, shrimp and chicken. Fish Cake ….ya obviously you know what it is…and both are using the same red sour sauce.

The main menus are : Vietnamese rice noodle with honey stewed beef, Kung pau chicken with rice, broccoli beef and spicy spaghetti with tauco.

The rice noodle is unusual, its big and wide like lasagna, but tastes like kwetiau which more skinny in size. It’s doesn’t fit my tongue as I am not a big fan of sweet soup, so the chili sauce helps me much.

If I could change one or two ingredients of this kung pau chicken, its definitely the peanut and semi sweet sauce. I will substitute with cashew nut and add more pepper in the sauce. oooh....and the rice is a little bit too hard to chew.

The spaghetti is nice, too bad the original menu is using seafood like a lot of shrimps on the top of it but they changed it with big cut of beef. But the taste is ok and portion is big enough.

We love vegetables, so I don’t have complaint at all on this broccoli beef. One of nice big plate of healthy food for old ladies like us…lol

Before go home, the last ritual is shopping.

Having a pregnant friend as companion, I didn’t buy anything, because she filled the basket with HUGE boxes of maternal milk for pregnant women, lol, but lucky me, she gave me the milk shaker bonus.

Well…there’s still time, so we try some weird and strange shoes, no intention at all to buy them……just a fun try, lol

road trip Kuala Lumpur – Hatyai - Bangkok

“are you sure about this ? It’s a very long trip you know from Kuala Lumpur to Hatyai takes 8 hours and then you need to change bus for another 12 hours to Bangkok “, a lady in the hostel tried to warn me the kind of boredom and fatigue I could have in this bus road trip. I don’t have many choices, the flight ticket already too expensive as I only had 2 weeks preparing this trip. Once, I was told to take night train but the time is ticking, and bus is faster than train.

Here I am waiting in the bus to departure, I am sitting on single chair with the window view. It’s drizzly outside but I hope the weather is gonna be bright again. My bus - the konsortium - is quite comfortable, all the seat is taken. Along the way, the scenery is not too interesting, mmm..ok, so I think I am going to sleep now. But the noisy won’t let me sleep….a group of big fat Indians keep talking among them then laughing, sometimes on phone, eating snacks and drinking beer. I don’t understand the language but I am sure they are talking about me as one of their subjects, lol. And from distant I could hear the conversation between “Robinson Crusoe” and his girl, they talk and laugh. All I do is replying some text messages from people who are still care enough of my existence.

The bus stop at konsortium base camp, just right at lunch time. They have canteen in one of the building but the lunch menu is just ordinary. I need something like hot soup to comfort my stomach, so I order this kwetiau/ rice flat noodle.

The kwetiau with chicken is not bad & the most important its still hot.

Hoop on the bus again, its still a long way to go ………………

a Little Note from December Trip –part 1

Kuala Lumpur

It was almost 10 pm when I reached Bukit Bintang area, the taxi driver said “be careful miss and have a safe trip” as I was travelling alone and that day on - 16th December 2009 - my first time in Malaysia. I found the place for sleep where I should spend my night in Kuala Lumpur before heading to Thailand in the next morning, it was a small nice hostel with bunk bed room off course, the red palm hostel.

Bukit Bintang area is a really live bustling place, after registered myself at the hostel, I walked to Puduraya bus station to get the bus ticket to Hatyai - a border city between Malaysia and Thailand. A little bit worried because ms. sofie - the hostel’s owner - told me that it’s school holiday and I might have difficulties in finding bus ticket.

She was right, from one counter to another counter, all the tickets to Hatyai sold out, I was standing hopeless in front one of ticket counter, on pc screen there was no more seat but the counter girl kept asking me to wait while she was checking availability through her handy talkie, please…please…I would trade anything for that ticket, even I would wait and sleep here in this bus station until I get my ticket. I was so damned lucky, she found one last ticket for me, tomorrow morning on 9 am.

I got back to hostel almost by midnight, so I nearly ate nothing proper for dinner but a piece of chocolate bar. The stomach was biting me and I made a promise that tomorrow I will eat as many as I could take.

Breakfast is free at the hostel, I took an early self service breakfast to catch my bus. I had coffee, bread and banana, well….not as many as I could take but enough energy to carry my backpack, lol.

Puduraya bus station is within walking distance, only about 10 minutes from the hostel. I looked at the bus platform on ground level but my bus was not there, so I asked where to wait and a man told me to wait in front of citin hotel across the station. I was not the only person, there were some people waiting the same bus, some malaysians and a couple of westerners who looks like Robinson Crusoe. When I saw the bus, I understood why they didn’t pick us at the platform, it was a double decker bus. I hoop on my bus and the adventure was just about to begin….lol

Oxtail Soup – Sup Buntut Al Hijrah

This is the best oxtail soup in my city. Oxtail soup or sup buntut from Al Hijrah restaurant is very famous for its fantastic taste. They also serve other soup like rib soup and meat soup. Its just the price is not that cheap, almost $2,5 per portion with rice included. But its really worth it. Very refreshing especially when its served hot in rainy day. The red chili sauce to enhance the taste is perfect.

They have 3 branches, but last time I tried their small restaurant in front of Pass Car Workshop near the gas station at Jl. Demang Lebar Daun. During the lunch hour the place would be crowded with workers.

The fries to accompany the oxtail soup are : fried lung/ liver, fried mashed potato, various types of fried tempe and tahu/ tofu.

Breakfast at Office Anniversary Day

Meatball & Chicken Porridge

Steamed Banana & Red Cassava Green Bean Porridge

Our office anniversary was held on last 4th October 2009, all employees were gathered by 6 am in the morning at regional office. We had 30 minutes mass aerobic led by Mrs. Mesach, a reputable fitness instructor in my city. It was a drizzly morning and most people hesitated to move their ass.

After the aerobic, we attacked the food stall for breakfast. There were 4 types of food to choose : meatball, chicken porridge, green bean porridge and steamed banana & cassava. I couldn’t choose one so I tried all of them.

Just like previous years, the breakfast food stall became self service counter at the end. To get a bowl of chicken porridge, you need an extra energy to compete with other hungry people. Take a look at the pictures below, see how uncontrollable the situation was….hehe….

Other hands around me were people trying to add some fried onion, parsley and fried soy bean for their porridge.

Hunter Steak at Eat Cafe

As written on previous post (link here), we had our office farewell at Eat Cafe and Resto. The cafe open from 7 pm to 10 pm. Their menu consist of various steaks, spaghetti, teppanyaki, noodles, fried rice, burgers, sandwiches, juices and smoothies. They also provide live music and free wifi for internet connection.

We ordered The Hunter Steak, as they said its their best steak menu. I forgot the price but it was almost Rp. 40.000,- equal to $ 4,5. The portion is big enough, steak beef poured over the tasty sauce, with 2 mashed potato which fried looks like big mushroom, sausage, onion rings, macaroni and stewed vegetables salad. In general, the steak is not bad. Maybe I’ll come back later to try their other steaks menu.

After 2 months off, yesterday was my first day attending the yoga class. I’ve re-new the membership and started to exercise again. The class finished on 5 pm, and my next destination was PTC mall to find some dvds & potato chips. The beginning of rainy season has started and we get hungry easily when it rains. Good movie and snack would be perfect …hehe…

I found a nice dvd for the rainy day , its about rain & food

The title is Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 3D animated movie from Sony Picture. The movie was released on last September and adapted from a children’s book written by Judi Barrett, which was first published by the year of 1978,

Flint Lockwood, a young inventor who live in a small city Chewandswallow is trying to find devices to make people life easier. But his invention always ended up in chaos and people consider him as a freak and geek. The city main food is only sardine, fried, boiled, grilled….., in the crisis of food, Flint invented a machine which could turn the water molecule into food. He tested his machine at the city hall and created another chaos. The machine flew, damaged the hall and disappeared into the clouds. Once again the whole city were angry at him.

While thinking of his failure at the dockyard, Flint met up a pretty reporter whose career almost ruined because of the chaos made by Flint. Suddenly the rain poured down but guess…. the rain was not water…it was rain of hamburgers from the sky !! Flint’s machine works.

People love his newest invention and Flint becomes popular. People started to request food, pancakes, donuts, steak, juices, soup ……just name it. But his popularity doesn’t last long. The machine overloaded and pouring the city with giant food, spaghetti storms, flying giant pizza. Can Flint stop the disaster ? Well…just go see the movie.

The food pictures are nice, especially the ice cream snow, colorful and really sweet. Make sure you have something to eat during the movie…hehehe…..

Eat Cafe ‘n Resto : The Survey

Today we had survey to Eat Cafe ‘n Resto for tomorrow farewell dinner, because 3 of the officers are transferred to other branches out of province. This restaurant located at Jl. Hang Tuah No. 4 Palembang and they only open at dinner time. Obviously long time ago the building was a house, the tables and chairs are placed in front of Grobok factory outlet clothes and accessories show room.

They offer modern menu like burger, spaghetti, various of homemade noodle and fried rice, and the specialty is the steak, both chicken and beef. The price is quite reasonable, and every night they always have live music to entertain the guests.

We reserved the table for 60 – 70 people, and got 10% discount. So, see you tomorrow for the real food pictures.

Kaastengels & Putri Salju

Some of my favorite cookies for Eid are kaastangels and putri salju (literally means snow white). Kaastangels or cheese-made cookie is very popular not only for Eid but also for Christmas.

Kaastangels

I took the recipe of kaastangels from http://www.sedap-sekejap.com/

Bahan Bahan :

125 gr margarin (blueband)
125 gr rombutter seperti merk wisman atau orchid (original 250 gr mentega)
4 kuning telur
300 gr terigu
1/2 sdt baking powder
200 gr keju cheddar parut (original pake edam)
100 gr keju cheddar parut untuk taburan
2 kuning telur untuk olesan

Cara Membuat :

Kocok margarin, rombutter & kuning telur sampai lembut, masukkan keju cheddar parut, kocok lagi sampai rata.
Ayak terigu, maizena dan baking powder diatas adonan, aduk rata.
Gilas adonan, cetak or bentuk sesuai selera, olesi dengan kuning telur dan taburi dengan keju cheddar parut.
Oven sampai matang.

Putri Salju

Bahan Bahan :

600 gr Tepung terigu
300 gr Kacang mete (disangrai dan ditumbuk halus)
200 gr Gula pasir yang agak halus / gula kastor
500 gr Margarin (dibekukan, lalu potong - potong)
300 gr Gula halus
1/2 sdt Vanili

Cara Membuat :

Campurkan tepung terigu, kacang mete, gula pasir dan margarin jadi satu.
Remas - remas adonan dengan tangan hingga tercampur rata.
Simpan dalam lemari pendingin selama 50 menit.
Ambil 2 sdt adonan, bulatkan dan bentuk seperti bulan sabit.
Buat hingga adonan habis.
Letakkan diatas loyang yang telah diolesi mentega, panggang dalam oven hingga matang.
Angkat dan dinginkan selama 5 menit.
Gulingkan kedalam campuran gula halus dan vanili.

I’ve finally decided the cakes for this Eid. As you can see, I ordered two cakes from “Kimmy Deli” because I love both cheese and chocolate. They are just so pretty and tempting. The baked cheese cake smells really good, very satisfying.

Cakes For Eid

Eid is around the corner, on a special day we prepare the special cake. For busy person like me -..hehe...- who has no time and no talent to bake own handmade cake, ordering from the bakery is the only choice.

Those beautiful cakes are from Kimmy Deli the Cake Specialist. I am looking at the brochure right now. Confused because they all look delicious and gorgeous. Well....let me think a while before I decide which cake to order. If you are interested in those cakes I can give you their contact number.

Yesterday we had dinner at Bukit Golf Restaurant, it was official dinner for employees (and their wives/ husbands). Bukit Golf means the golf hill, maybe because it's located in front of the only golf field in my city, 15 minutes far from my home and next to the gas station at Jl. Dr. M. Isa. Nice restaurant which offers variety of food as you can see on the picture.

The room was crowded, by that time most people were having official dinner with their company, it's the effect of the Ramadhan atmosphere.

I think this is Sundanese dish from west java.

We also had pindang tulang and sapo tahu, our favorite.....

My Favorite Rice Companions for Meal

Indonesia is an agrarian country, we eat rice as our main food in any occasion -breakfast-lunch-dinner-, so when we had meal without rice we couldn't say that we HAD real meal because our stomach will crave for rice just to make it a complete meal.

And to accompany the plain rice we have many side dishes to choose, each region in Indonesia offers different unique culinary experience to explore. Some are nice and amazing but sometimes it's so surprising and doesn't fit your tongue and tastes weird...hehe Well....it's all just about habit.

Let's start, here are some of my favorite side dishes

The Oriental Style : Sapo Tahu

Chinese ethnic has been part of our culture -theirs blended with ours-, their influence can also be found in the cuisine, and sapo tahu/ tofu represents the best. Sapo tahu consist of silk egg tofu, paprika, button mushroom, shitake/ hyoko mushroom, shrimps, calamari, carrot, bok coy vegs, It's served in a clay pot to keep it warm and enhance the taste. Very healthy and refreshing especially the ginger taste of the broth.

The Traditional Taste : Pindang Tulang

Pindang is somekind of spicy and sour soup. Very famous dish from my province, South Sumatera. The closest comparison to pindang is Thailand tom yam soup. But the biggest difference is that tom yam -always- has mixed seafood in it, while pindang only focus on one thing : various of river fishes (patin & gabus) - or meat or shrimp - as the filling.

Literally, pindang tulang means bone pindang, but it's not 100% only bone, there are also some meat in the soup.

The Flavored Rice : Nasi Goreng

Rice is not always white and plain, nasi goreng or fried rice is the perfect sample. This is everyone's favorite, including the President of United States - Mr. Barrack Obama - who spent few years of his childhood in Jakarta - the capital of Indonesia. When our president attended a conference in USA, for politeness Mr. Obama called him telling that hopefully he could have a formal visit in Indonesia later and he missed : nasi goreng, bakso & rambutan (fried rice, meatball & hairy looks tropical fruit). Next day, it became newspaper headline ...hehe..

Each restaurant and eateries have their own special recipe of nasi goreng. The filling could be egg, seafood, sausage, sliced of chicken, beef or anchovy , creativity plays the important role. It's sold in almost every eating place from street side to five stars hotel. We used to eat it for breakfast but people also eat this for lunch and even dinner.
