If you spend a lot of time on Gmail or use Gmail as your office email and would like to keep track of your favorite sites without leaving it then this tip is for you.

Gmail’s web clips feature can be configured to deliver updates from your favorite sites freeing you from the clutter in your Inbox which email subscriptions create.

The configuring process is pretty simple and straight forward.

Just Login to your Gmail Account and click on Settings which is located towards the top right

Under Settings click on the Web Clips tab, by default Gmail has a number of common feeds already added, remove all those which you are not interested in or else it would be difficult for you to follow your favorite feeds.

Enter the Feed URL of your favorite blog in the search field and click on search.

If successful you would now see the blogs name with a Preview under the search results, click on the Add button next to it and that's it you are done.

You would now receive updates to your Gmail account as and when the site is updated.

Here are 7 Easter Eggs in some of the every day applications that I use.

Starting with the Web Browser

Firefox :

The Present version of Firefox is known to contain two Easter egg’s

Making the appearance for the first time is the Firefox 3 mascot, The robot.

To access the Robot Easter egg type “about:robots” in your Firefox address bar without the colons or click here about:robots .

The second one is the new version of the classic Mozilla Easter egg which makes fun of Microsoft cryptically

In this 10th edition it speaks about the demise of Internet Explorer and the ever Increasing popularity of Firefox.

To access the Mozilla Easter egg type “about:mozilla” in your Firefox browser address bar without the colons and hit enter or click here about:mozilla

Waiting for the download of a file to finish in utorrent, why not have some fun while you do that? play a game of Tetris called mu U Tris

You can access the game by going to Help –> About Utorrent and pressing the T key on your keyboard.

Picasa2 Easter egg :

When in Picasa press ctrl+shift+y to decorate your Picasa window with a cute teddy, you can create multiple teddy's by pressing those keys and the bear can be dragged to anywhere in the window.

Winamp:

The Present Version of Winamp 5.531 contains two Easter egg’s, here’s how to access them

When in the Winamp window press hold ctrl+shift and type NULLSOFT

Now when you play a song in Winamp the Easter egg changes the players transparency according to the beat, maximize the window to see the effect clearly. the player reset’s to normal behaviour when restarted.

The second Easter egg can be accessed by going to Options –> Preferences, scroll down to Plug-ins and click on

Input –> Nullsoft Vorbis Decoder v1.51 and then About, you should now see a Fish in the about window,Challenge

yourself by clicking on the fish as fast as you can and recording your best RPM.

Google Reader:

To replicate this in your Google Reader go to Settings –> Goodies and drag the Next link to your bookmarks bar on the browser and use it until there are no more links in the Reader for you to visit, Google Reader will display the End of the Internet message or just click here to see it End of Internet

How To Change Orkut Profile Theme

Here’s a Visual Guide on How to change the Default Theme in Orkut.

Log into your Orkut Profile and look for the change theme option towards the top right of the window

Click on the change theme option, this should open the Edit profile window for themes, you can also access this option by going to Profile –> Edit profile and clicking on the Themes tab there.

click on a theme that you want and click on the update option present towards the bottom left of the page and you are done.

Here’s how your profile would look like if you have chosen the Bus Stop theme.

How To Make Gmail the Default email Client In Firefox 3

You Might have come across this issue on the web, usually when you click on a mailto link Firefox would try to launch the default email client on your machine, usually Outlook for Windows users, if you have configured Outlook then it’s ok but most users don’t use desktop email clients like Outlook or Thunderbird , It would be great if it opened Gmail Instead.

This can be achieved by two ways,

1.The first one involves Installing the Google Toolbar for Firefox which provides an option to make Gmail the default email client.

The Google Toolbar also adds some pretty useful features to your browser like the ability to access your Google Bookmarks, check the Importance of a particular website in Google’s view with the PageRank Info, highlighting your search terms on a webpage and auto completion of search terms in the search bar.

2. The Second option is to add Gmail as the default application in Firefox which handles mailto links.

Here’s a Visual walk through on how to make Gmail the default email client for your Firefox browser

Method 1:

Get Google Toolbar for Firefox and Install it and restart your browser, you should now see Google Toolbar on your browser Go to the Settings option on the toolbar and click on Options

You should now see the Google Toolbar Options window

Click on More and under the Page Tools options check Send with Gmail option and click on OK,from now on Firefox will launch Gmail whenever you click on a mailto link.

Method 2:

Go To Gmail and Login into your account, once at the Inbox paste the following code into the Address Bar and Hit Enter.

javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto","https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","Gmail")

You should now see a Firefox prompt asking for your permission to add Gmail as the application to handle mailto links

Click on Add Application, you should now click on a mailto link, click this mailto link.

You should now see a Application Selector window, select Gmail and check the option Remember my choice for mailto links and click on OK and you are done. (You don't need to send an email to me)

In future if you want to change the application which handles the mailto links you can do so by going to Tools –> Options –> Applications and searching for mailto and selecting the application you want.

For Linux Users of Firefox it’s under Edit –> Preferences –> Applications.

Sync your Thunderbird lightning Calendar with Google Calendar

Provider for Google Calendar is a Thunderbird add-on that let’s you synchronize your events in Lightening with Google Calendar in both directions.

First step is to Install the Provider for Google Calendar add-on second we need to obtain the Private feed address of your Google Calendar, for this Login to your Google Calendar account and click on Settings option located at the top right beside your email address

Click on the Calendars option

Find the Calendar that you want to sync with under My Calendars and click on it, In my case I have only one calendar.

Scroll Down to the Private Address field and click on the XML button there

You should now see the Calendar address window, this is the address that we need to sync the Lightening calendar with

Open Thunderbird Lightening and go to File –>New->Calendar

Under Create New Calendar Choose On the Network option and Click Next

Choose Google Calendar and enter the feed address obtained from Google Calendar in the Location Field

Click on Next , give the newly created calendar a nick name and specific a color for the events and click on Finish.

You now have all your Google calendar events perfectly synched to Thunderbird and viceversa.

Tag your Entire Music Collection with just a few clicks using Winamp player.

Winamp’s newest version Winamp 5.5 has a Cool new feature called Auto-Tag it basically tags the tracks in your music collection with the right artist and album name and other details by queering the grace note media database

It not only tagged all the music in my English collection perfectly with the right artist and album name but also songs from other languages like Hindi and Telugu, quite Impressive.

Here’s a Visual walk through

First You need to have all of your music collection in the Winamp Library, if you haven’t already done that during the setup of Winamp on your machine here’s how to do that

Click on Library at the Bottom in the Expanded mode, you can also access this option by clicking on File at the top left of the Winamp window and select Add Media to Library , you should now see a window

Browse to the Parent folder of your Music collection and select it and also check the box Scan folder in background and click on Add, all the tracks would be added to the library making it also easier to search and find a particular track.

Once all the songs have been imported to the Library select all of them by pressing ctrl+a, right click on them and select send to –> Auto-Tag

You should now see Auto Tagger window

Wait till the Status of all the songs shows up as Done (this would take some time depending on the size of your collection) and then click on Apply Changes and your Done.

You now Have a Perfectly Tagged Music Collection.

How To Access your Linux Partitions / Drives In Windows

If you dual boot to Linux and Windows Operating Systems regularly then you might have come across this Issue of not being able to access that Imp file you have saved on a Linux Partition from Windows.

Though Linux supports accessing of windows file systems like Fat 32 and NTFS the same is not true for Windows, Windows does not support accessing Linux ext 2, ext 3 file systems natively but It’s possible to access Linux Partitions or Drives from Windows using other applications.

There are a lot of free software out there but the following three are the most prominently used ones and out of these three my vote goes for Ext2 Installable File system.

1.Ext2 Installable File System installs to the Operating system kernel giving windows the ability to read and write to it directly, you can access the Linux Partitions from with in Windows Explorer as you would access any other file on a windows partition unlike the other two software's below which use a separate interface to access the Linux Partitions and save files.

During the Installation it scans for all Linux partitions on your hard drives and asks you to assign a Drive letter to each of them, once you have assigned a drive letter you are good to go and use it.

It also provides access to Ext 3 file system but does not support journaling.

2.Explore2fs comes as a simple executable file in a zip folder, double click the executable and allow to Run the file whenever you need access to your Linux Drives, it launches a separate window with all the Linux partitions.

Right click on a file that you need access to and click on Export file option this launches a window from which you can select the location where you want to save the file to.

Note: It doesn’t have the capability to write to a Linux Partition.

3.DiskInternals Linux Reader Installs as a separate program on your computer , run the program whenever you need access to your Linux partitions.

It scans your Hard drives each time you launch the program and displays all the available partitions on your Hard drives.

You can also access Linux images by mounting them using the option Mount Image marked by the red arrow in the above pic.

To copy a file to your windows partitions right click on the file and click on save-> Next

Browse to the Location where you want to save the file to

Click on Next –> Finish and you are done.

Note: It doesn’t have the capability to write to a Linux Partition.

4 Essential Thunderbird Extensions

Mozilla Thunderbird The Desktop Email client from the makers of Firefox comes with the same USP of Firefox, that's Customization.

You can customize the look and feel of thunderbird by adding themes and Icon packs and many extra features through extensions.

Let's look at some of those essential Thunderbird Extensions:

1. Minimize to Tray & Minimize to tray enhancer

2. Contacts Sidebar

3. Zindus

4.Lightning

Minimize to Tray:

This thunderbird extension does what it says, it minimizes thunderbird to the System tray freeing that precious Taskbar real estate every application in your machine fights for.

You need to use the key combo of Ctrl+Shift+M to use it or click on File -> Minimize to tray Or Get the minimize to tray enhancer add-on which adds a blue Icon to minimize to the tray and other useful configurable options like Always minimize to tray instead of to the taskbar, which can be accessed by going to Tools-> Add-ons->Options

Contacts Sidebar:

The Contacts Sidebar add-on moves the contacts to the sidebar providing easy access to the contacts.

You can compose an email by a simple double click on the name in the sidebar.

It also add’s some Pretty Useful search options to search with, by a word it contains or Begin’s with making it easy to locate that elusive email address you use regularly but can’t seem to remember.

Zindus :

Zindus is a add-on that let’s you Import and synchronize your Gmail contacts with your Thunderbird contacts list.

It has a few glitches under certain conditions when syncing with Gmail contacts but works well most of the time , if you come across any issues then checkout this FAQ for Thunderbird contact sync page at Zindus, it has very well written explanations with examples.

Lightning :

Lightning converts Thunderbird into a full fledged organizer by adding a Calendar application which makes it easy to organize and schedule your daily tasks.

How To Login To Multiple Google Talk Accounts Simultaneously.

Do you have friends or colleagues on different Google Talk accounts that you need to chat simultaneously or you have different Accounts of Google Talk for Personal and Professional use and need to login to both of them simultaneously.

One way to do the above would be to use the Chat feature in Gmail for one account and Google Talk client for the other.

What if you need to login to more than two accounts or You have the chat feature in Gmail turned off and don't want to use it, in that case you can use the below methods to login to multiple accounts at once.

Method one:

Assuming that you have Google Talk installed under C drive in the below location,
Go to Start->Run and type "c:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe" /nomutex and click ok, repeat this to open any number of Instances that you may want.

Method two:

Create a shortcut of the Google Talk icon on your desktop if you don't have one.
To create a shortcut, right click on the Google Talk icon in your start menu and click on send to-->Desktop(shortcut).

Right click on the Google Talk messenger icon and select the Properties option.

Modify the text in Target location to "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe" /nomutex (replace startmenu with nomutex) and click OK.

Now you can use that shortcut to launch multiple Instances of the Google Talk Client.

How To Open Google Talk Gadget In Your Firefox Sidebar

A Cool Trick to open Google talk gadget in your Firefox sidebar.

You can use this trick to browse on the web and keep track of what your friends are saying simultaneously.

To get the gadget in your Firefox side bar bookmark the following link http://talkgadget.google.com/talkgadget/client
and in the bookmark menu right click on the bookmark and select properties, check the option Load this bookmark in the sidebar and click ok, now click on that book mark to open it in your sidebar. Now you can enjoy chatting with your friends no matter which page you are in.

Google Talks Keyboard Shortcuts

The following are the Google Talks Shortcuts and tips that can be used to achieve a variety of tasks:

* F9: Open Gmail to send an email to the person you are chatting with.
* F11: Start a call.
* F12: Stop the current call.
* ESC: Close the current window
* ALT + ESC: Minimize the current window
* TAB: Switch between multiple chat windows.(gadget)
* SHIFT + TAB: Same as TAB but in reverse order.(gadget)
* CTRL + Mousewheel up/down: Change the font size in the chat window.
* CTRL + E: Center text
* CTRL + R: Right justify text
* CTRL + L or CTRL+J: Left justify text

Google Talk Tips:

Adding * or _ before and after a phrase will make it bold or italic.

Adding ^ before anything that you type would capitalize it, ^hi would result in HI.(will work only in Google talk gadget)

Adding ^ before and after a word or a sentence will capitalize,bold and color that text.(will work only in Google talk gadget)

Get a Preview of your Google/Yahoo Search Results with GooglePreview Firefox Addon

Google Preview is a Firefox Add-on which provides a snapshot of web pages beside the search results in Google and yahoo search, making it easier to find relevant web pages and to decide wether to visit a certain link or not.

The delay in the display of the search results due to the images is negligible, You can Toggle this feature On or Off by clicking the icon located on the lower right corner of your browser window {marked by the red arrow in the image above).

Right clicking on this Icon will give you access to the GooglePreview options window where you can configure the Maximum number of images per page if you have a customized Google search results page.

Firefox Browser Link Association Issue

After upgrading to Firefox 3 RC 1 recently ,I have Decided to uninstall Firefox 2 from my machine as most of my favourite addon's are now available for Firefox 3.

The Issue: After Uninstalling Firefox 2 I was unable to open URL links from other programs like Thunderbird and Google Talk in the browser.

The OS(operating system) was still pointing to Firefox 2 as the default browser which is now Uninstalled.

The Resolution: Well It's simple we need to get the OS to point to Firefox 3 as the default browser.

Here's how it's done:

Go to Start-> Set Program Access and Defaults

If you don't see Set Program Access and Defaults in your Start Menu than go to

Start-> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs -> Set Program Access and Defaults

Expand Custom and click on the Mozilla Firefox radio button

Click on OK at the bottom and it's done.

Comparision of the best free Antiviruses available

There are quite a number of free antivirus software's available on the web,I have always wondered which is the best free antivirus out there, so I scouted around the web reading reviews from a good number of sites and forums and comparing their results and these are the Finalist's That I zeroed onto

So The Best of the free Antivirus software's available are:

Avira Personal Edition. (Formerly known as AntiVir)

Avast Home Edition.

Grisoft's AVG Free Edition.

All the three antiviruse software's are on a equal footing but each has it's Pro's and Con's,

So here's what I think about them:

1.Avira Personal Edition

Avira formerly known as Antivir is my choice of the best free antivirus software's.

This no frill's software has a simple and easy to use user Interface, it's quiet low on the usage of system resources and has a good outbreak response time for new Infections at 4-6 hours and has regular updates the every other day.
My Personal experience using this software has been quite good and I am impressed by it's detection capabilities.

2.Avast Home Edition

Avast antivirus has a hip looking media player style user interface, it takes a little bit of getting used to, to locate all the settings available and to use it efficiently, you can use a number of different skins on the user interface panel which is a cool option but this would effect the system resource usage which is quite high for this antivirus software, use it only if you want the extra bells and whistles this antivirus offers like the sounding of a siren alarm when a virus is found and if you have enough system resources to spare, has a out break response time of 8-10 hours.

3.AVG Free Edition

Avg is improving day by day, it has an easy to use user Interface, is low on the system resource usage but has some issues with other security products like zone alarm firewall,which have been rectified in the newer versions though, has a outbreak response time of 8-10 hours.
My personal experience with it has been not so good, always had issues with it's virus detection capabilities.

I have used these programs on my computers for a while now and find them no way inferior to the Commercial antivirus softwares when it comes to their core capabilities.

Upload images from the web to Flickr and Picasa web albums with this simple trick

Let's say you have seen an Interesting image on the web and want to save it to your picasa web album or your flickr account so that you can share it with your friends easily or post it to your blog , your normal work flow would be to :

Save the Image to the computer--> open your picasa/flickr account --> upload the image to your account.

Instead of saving the images to your computer and then uploading you can directly upload the images from the web to your account by pasting the URL of the image that you want in place of the file name and upload.

This would download the image from the web to the browsers cache and upload it saving you from some extra steps and from the clutter on your hard disk.

Firefox 3 RC1 (Release Candidate) is out

Firefox 3 the wait is over well almost, it's only a step away from the final release and this is very much how you would find the final release candidate to be if there aren't any fatal bug finds.

Here's a simple Graphic that shows the stages of testing and development through which a software goes through before being released to the public.

The Rss Bug in the previous version 3.5 beta has been fixed.

I am a big foody and like Practicing my culinary skills often by cooking recipes that I find online, to Tickle my taste buds and escape from the tasteless stuff that I eat daily.

One of the problems that I usually face while doing this is Identifying the Ingredients in my mother tongue ,as they are in English and I have a big difficulty with that (~~Damn~~).

You might have already guessed by now as of what I was on to. (see the Image above)

How To Add Orkut's App's to your Profile Page: For Non Indian Users.

Google's Social media site Orkut has recently launched a cool new feature called" apps" short for applications similar to facebooks applications,
these apps let you add some cool new features to your profile but as of now this feature is only available to Indian users, orkut has promised to roll out this feature to all orkut users soon.

If you are one of those non Indian users and can't wait to try out this cool new feature on your profile page there's a work around available.

Log into Orkut and go to the edit profile page or just click on the link below and change your Location to India and click on update at the bottom and your Done.
Home > My profile > Edit profile

You will now be able to add all the cool apps to your profile page through a new addition to the Control Panel on the left "add apps".

8 Simple ways to Make your stay at the Office more Eco Friendly.

Here's a List of 8 Simple things that you can do at the office with little effort to lend a hand to the Environment.

Copy and print on both sides of paper and if Possible use Two up or four up to print two or four pages on a single side.

Use the Print Preview option and remove any pages or large blocks of text that are not required, the few extra seconds are worth it.

Reuse items like envelopes, folders and paper clips, Use discarded paper for scrap paper.

Use e-mail & Instant messaging instead of paper correspondence as much as possible.

Get yourself a ceramic coffee mug instead of using the disposable cups at the coffee machine.

Use a Hand Kerchief or a napkin Instead of the Paper Towels in the washroom.

Lowering your computers brightness and using the inbuilt power management tool will reduce the power consumption considerably.

Make sure to Shutdown your computer and switch it off at the Power socket before you leave for the day, leaving them in stand by mode will keep drawing power even after shutting down (the monitor keeps drawing).

Share these simple steps with your friends and colleagues and Convince them to join you.

Convert your Ms Word Documents to PDF's with MS Word

Need to convert a word document that you just created to PDF. you don't need to go to the hassle of opening a separate program to do that, you can convert the document to PDF using MS word but first you need to install a add-in for that, which can be downloaded for free from the Microsoft website. once you have installed the add-in all you need to do is to select the file type as PDF in the save as menu and your word document will be converted to a PDF file.

Here's a step by step guide to do that:

Open Microsoft word and click on the office Icon at the top left corner, in the drop down menu move your pointer to save as and click on Find add-in's for other file formats.

In the resulting window click on Install and use option....

then click on the option Go to the Microsoft Save as....

you will be taken to the Microsoft Download center, Go through the validation and download the Add-in and install it. Now you can save your word files to PDF's, the add-in is compatible with the other Programs in your MS office suite.

Don't want to go through all of this, Fed up with Microsoft Products , Using a Cracked MS Office Suite, then use Open Office it's free.

PDF conversion is also possible in Open Office (see Below Image)
