The Jean Guide : Denim Down Under

Jeans that are made for your genes!

Finding the right pair of jeans to suit your fashion game can be a super fun task and rewarding once your parcel arrives at your door. The know-how of fashion, colour combination, and styling can be made very simple when you find the right brand (aka make) destined for you.

Jeans mean more now, as it has become a permanent in modern fashion. In Australia, there’s an abundance of women’s denim styles waiting to be owned and loved, but it’s a matter of ensuring the right pair is always reliable and appealing on the eye. So, here’s a QUICK GUIDE of the types of styles, rises and lengths, alongside wear tips to get your online shopping cart prepped for success.

Let us strip back the process and explain the science behind accelerating your fashion game.

STYLES DEFINED

Boyfriend Denim –

A slouchy cut boasting a relaxed fit all the way from the waist, hip and down to the ankles. A style that is seen as masculine, although modified and designed for her. A style that is often referred to as borrowed from him, by her. It’s loose and comfortable. An everyday denim staple, a style that hides your unwanted body shape features (vulnerable ones) due to a generous amount of fabric on offer.

Wear tip: Belts and heels are a great style-add, accentuating a feminine touch to an item that depicts masculinity. Cuff this jean style at the ankles for a clean finish.

Bootcut Jeans (Flares) –

A jean that hugs the thighs and then flares out tapering at the knees and widens down to the ankles.

Wear tip: Designed to sit over your ankle boots for a 'polished' look. This style can create an illusion of one being taller and slimmer. It is still flattering as it creates shape for all figure types.

Mom Jeans –

A relaxed jean from the waist down and then tapers at the ankles. Often found to have a high waist.

Wear Tip: Tuck in a tee and throw on a bomber with some slides to complete your outfit. These jeans are great for flattering the figure while still offering uber comfort and not objectifying your body shape (due to the ample material on offer).

Skinny Jeans & Jeggings –

A skin-tight hugging fit from your waist to your ankles. Often snug in the seat, thigh region and ankles.

Wear tip: Throw on a blazer paired with a cute blouse, cami or graphic tee and you have a sophisticated/edgy look, which can be worn in the workplace and then quickly transition into an outfit to attend after-work drinks.

Slim Jeans –

A slim fit all the way down from your waist to your ankles.

Wear tip: Great for a casual outing, paired with a statement cardigan and sandals/wedges. A wonderful pick, for anyone with a slender frame, who wishes to not have skin hugging pants.

Straight Leg Jeans –

Same width from the thigh going straight down to the ankles.

Wear Tip: Choose a blouse which highlights your waist in this style of jean, to create a curvaceous shape that will embrace your feminine silhouette.

Wide Leg –

Fitted waist, relaxed thigh (creating extra room for those with thicker thighs), to then, extend out wider all the way to the ankles.

Wear tip: Crop tops are a great way to elevate the look of wide leg denim jeans.

RISE

Rise can be impacted based on your individual body length, below is just a guide regarding placement.

High – Designed to sit above or on your belly button. High waist jeans are usually great at hiding those unwanted tummy woes!

Mid – Designed to sit below your belly button.

Low – Designed to sit comfortably around the hip region.

LENGTH

Full Length – A longer inseam and outer leg length for those who have been gifted with height (taller people).

7/8 Ankle Grazer Length – A jean pant that’s designed to sit at the ankles or close to the ankle (shorter in height).

Denim jeans are perfect additions for capsule wardrobes and trans-seasonal wear.

There are a lot of wearers, especially the baggier preference being at the forefront of Gen Z’S denim of choice (yes, the jean movement was heard loud and clear).
Tammy

Guest Blogger

– An unfashionable moment at the Oscars.

It is known as the night of nights for the coveted Oscars. Where the red-carpet sets trends and the infamous Vanity Fair after-party sets tongues wagging. However, the contentious moment of the night shone light on women and hair loss.

Alopecia was the talk of the 94th Academy Awards this year, prior to Will Smith taking out the Oscar for Best Actor; he took public offence to a GI Jane joke made by Chris Rock at the expense of his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith…

“Can’t wait for GI Jane 2” Rock joked only to be met on stage by a seething Will Smith moments later.

*For those who don’t understand the reference, Demi Moore famously shaved her head in GI Jane to get into the character’s mindset of undergoing gruelling military training in a male dominated group.

Hair loss is not easy. Hollywood’s focus on beauty involves a fierce combination of society's ideology of the 'most perfect' makeup, hair, fashion and talent. Weighted on women specifically.

Jada Pinkett Smith has been openly struggling with alopecia, leading her to shave her head.

Controversy, healing and mixed feelings on violence and protecting women were being discussed around the globe due to this incident.

“Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth!” Will yelled twice when returning to his seat, after delivering the humiliating slap to Chris Rock, after storming the stage during the celebrity roast (accustomed to award shows); and was visibly shaken.

It wasn’t the punchline Rock had anticipated.

It also raised much needed awareness for the types of alopecia which exist; and hair loss in women. An often-masked subject – balding in females.

Alopecia comes in varied forms and is not a laughing matter for anyone who is suffering through this disease.

There are so many reasons for hair loss:

Breastfeeding and pregnancy

Hormonal changes

Medication

Viruses and illness

Chemotherapy

Alopecia areata

Extreme stress

Male and female pattern hair loss

Inherent

Words such as volume and thickness appear to be the gentler way for marketeers selling ‘balding’ products to the masses.

As I sat in my daughter’s swimming class a fellow mother started chatting to me about the ongoing impacts of surviving COVID-19. This included hair loss.

Backtrack to three weeks ago, when I found clumps of hair in the shower. Mortified, I tried to work out what in the holy mother of hair loss was going on. I had contracted COVID-19 in November 2021. Fast forward to April 2022 and I am still losing hair in chunks at the age of 39. I have been under stress at work, but this was intense and I definitely felt the loss.

Based on my fellow swimming parent, who also teaches at a local girls’ college, she explained that her students who had also experienced hair loss after COVID-19 are devastated. She said that this is only until the virus completely leaves your system, so approximately 3-4 months. So that is the silver-lining, not my grey hair!

The investigative journalist in me went to work, sourcing an article cited below:

https://healthcare.utah.edu/healthfeed/postings/2022/03/hair-loss-covid19.php

“What causes hair loss?

Patients who experience hair loss from SARS-CoV-2 infection may notice clumps of hair falling out during their daily combings or while washing their hair in the shower. The phenomenon is known as telogen effluvium.”

So, after conducting my research these are my top ideas to assist anyone experiencing hair loss:

A BLESSED GIFT, For Her: The Evil Eye

The power of a gift is the intent. Gift giving is a reminder that you are thinking of someone, that you are grateful for them. That you ultimately care. If you are looking for the perfect gift to satisfy this sentiment, whilst being fashion conscious, I believe YOU were meant to read this!

Getting gift ready.

The pending end of 2021 (and possibly the world *jokingly shrugs*) has personally put me straight into gift mode. There are teachers and coaches who need to be thanked, the birthdays, Chanukah, Christmas, and the New Year. All a hop, skip and jump away.

We have witnessed a dual surge in both ‘snap lockdowns’ and ‘care-packages’. Gifts are being sent to employees, friends, and families as a reminder that they are important. I started to think, what is the perfect gift in this upside-down world?

Light bulb queue, the modern evil eye jewellery is trending and a thoughtful gift ‘for her’. Read on and find out what this exactly is!

“Ptui… ptui… ptui…”

This is me protecting you from the evil eye.

I am not sure about you, but 2020 & 2021 has me shook. It feels like the world is experiencing a transition like no other, all thanks to COVID19. When the world is throwing negativity at you, how should you respond? Deflect the noise with positivity.

To combat pandemic lockdown fatigue and feelings of uncertainty, I began praying for a fresh outlook. I started wearing meaningful jewellery which made me feel empowered and safe. This had been what we wore as children and ingrained subconsciously from family traditions at a young age, so it brought back a sense of comfort and control.

For over 3,000 years people have protected themselves, their homes, loved ones and anything of value from the evil eye. A superstition that someone who is jealous or wishes you misfortune; can voluntarily OR involuntarily give you the evil eye to cause you pain and misery.

Its origin can be traced back to Ancient Greece with the ‘apotropaic’ amulet, symbolising the reflection of damage. The most basic design stems from the Middle East and is the blue/green and white circular Nazar/Nazr, symbolising evil eyes.

Fast-forward to 2021 and the shift of the gargoyle-style approach warding off evil is now translated in delicate crystal amulets, natural stone quartz OR talisman as examples. The modern spin of 'protection' is far less creepy than the historic statues, pendants, and images, which were made to scare off evil intentions.

There is no denying that the evil eye is a thought process and belief system. It has become a normalised superstition based on energy. Not actual science. However, the mind is a powerful weapon, and the law of attraction suggests that what you manifest is what you attract. So, why not style yourself in this beautiful delicate armour and protect your choices and lifestyle?

Seen on the arms of celebs such as Kim Kardashian or décolletage of Rihanna (Ri Ri). Gigi Hadid and her baby daddy, Zayn Malik are the benchmark in the fashion stakes, so it is no surprise that culturally and fashionably they share in this trend.

There are many celebs who pair holy or sacred symbols as part of their fashion ensembles. Such as, Madonna and Cher making a crucifix as part of their fashion statements. Then Madonna and Britney also popularised the Kabbalah bracelet. There are celebrities like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez who proudly wear their religious views too.

Cultural perspective

It is true that the concept of an eye, an evil eye, is not universal, it is however cross-cultural. Meaning it has “moved” across many cultures but not across the entire world. 36% of the 186 cultures among the entire world believe in the powers of an evil eye.

From South India, “Eat not the bread of him, that hath the evil eye” as says the Hindu faithful, to the Italians and Maltese who wear a bull horn charm to ward off ‘Il Malocchio”, if you travel to Turkey the Nazar Boncuk pendants hang in their famous market places (bazars) bringing colourful mystique, explore the the Middle East and you will find the fear associated to ward of the al-'ayn العين‎ captured in gold and silver jewellery pieces crafted with cubic zirconia stones, into prayer beads, or jewellery pins on babies and small children. The Hamsa hand is worn by Jewish and Middle Eastern women; and hung in Judaica stores as it eases fears of those who cast ayin ha’ra. Different methods, same ideology of keeping bad vibes at bay.

This deeply seeded belief is entangled in the love of tradition, folklore and the genuine regard for our wellbeing also known as fear from evil spirits, toxic people, or a difficult mother-in-law - just kidding!

Equip yourself

Let’s recap. The evil eye is a glare that is believed to bring bad luck for the person at whom it is directed. It is understood that if you wear the evil eye it brings you a sense of spiritual protection.

Wearing or hanging an evil eye symbol/piece on your body, in your home, car or place of business; is to ultimately guard your safety and wellbeing against misfortune, bad spirits, unluckiness or ill wishes from those who cast or glare at you.

Now more than ever, it has been more relevant to pair a power piece of chic jewellery with other accessories. Beauty and protection are trending for 2021 in the fashion stakes.

Just remember, superstition is a belief; however, it only has power if you feed the energy behind the source. The enigma of the perfect gift has stumped humans for centuries so we love the idea of fashion pieces complementing an outfit while adding the blessing of protection.

The team behind IZOA jewellery has worked to bring us a large range of modern evil eye jewellery. IZOA accessories are sold by us (aka www.thezebraeffect.com.au) and can be shopped from the comfort of your own home worldwide; to be gifted anywhere to anyone.

Might I mention, you do not HAVE to receive this item as a gift for it to hold meaning. You can also gift it to yourself as well! Regardless of the reason you purchase this special piece, it has meaning beyond its physical façade.

Fashion is fun, so allow accessories to empower you, complement your style and to complete your outfit whilst holding meaning to your everyday.

Why I Love My Bessy Biker Jacket?

Sunday morning. I stood staring at my reflection in the mirror. I was running late for brunch with a good friend, but the fashion-gods had glued my feet to the ground… My outfit was not finished, I knew it; and so did the universe. I wasn’t channelling edgy, it was more along the lines of cat lady.

By the way there is nothing wrong with channelling cat lady, but quite simply it just wasn’t the look I was going for.

Cue light bulb moment: Why not throw a biker jacket over the dress? Freaking genius!

I made it to brunch in a floral dress with my black Bessy biker jacket as the style clincher (I also own one in nude and khaki)… and I was so lit. It was a fashion Yin Yang win – Yin (biker jacket/shady side, well pretend) and Yang (floral dress/sunny side) – and together these pieces made my outfit reach complete wholeness.

Thank goodness the biker jacket has made a sneaky sea change to high-end fashion. In 2019 it has evolved into a fashion lust-have, tailored for a female figure with all the zips and pockets oozing strength and cool without me having to own a Harley Davidson.

So the reigning question… is a biker jacket a wardrobe essential? A biker is someone who is part of a sub-culture, identified for riding motorbikes. A biker jacket is an item they wear to protect them from the weather and riding conditions, it has a zip down the front, which in turn allows the rider to lean forward and manoeuvre the bike.

Leather jackets and biker jackets are from the same family, but it is their specific detail, which sets them apart. Same, same, but different.

Rationality, holds zero explanation for my personal attraction to the biker jacket, but regardless of how many colours I own – I just want more. Ignoring my subconscious imitating Veruka Salt (Willy Wonka Moment) mockingly, “But I want it now!”

My Bessy biker jacket hugs my silhouette and provides added edge when desired.

Timelessness is a word I reserve for fashion essentials, which hold their fashion weight and worth as statement pieces. Fashion can be a cruel industry for many styles, but the biker jacket has been made an essential (to answer the above question).

We all know famous biker jacket advocates… The cast of Sons Of Anarchy, James Dean (Rebel Without A Cause), “Fonzie” (Henry Winkler in Happy Days), “Danny” (John Travolta and his fellow T-Birds in Grease), but it was everything the moment Olivia Newton-John wore the biker jacket in one of the most famous final scenes from Grease. Slay. Red kicks also get a special mention.

She meant business, no flimsy pink lady jacket here, thank you very much – she was demanding and knew what she wanted You’re the one that I want*. This outfit was a base style of mine, for many years.

I know people who wear biker jackets, some of these folk ride motorbikes and others prefer to shop online fashion boutiques. One thing we can all agree upon, is despite our appearance and lifestyle a wardrobe is not complete without a biker jacket.

Enjoy the mystery and illusiveness that such a crucial fashion piece brings to one’s life – I love my Bessy Biker jackets. Just saying ;)

Shivering on the edge of the road, I hastily scan iconic Hampton Street – waiting for my chance to cut through traffic back to the office, as a truck speeds past and sprays me with the essence of a dirty cold Melbourne winter puddle, through gritted teeth I (Tammy) exhale, “Well played winter, well played…”

June marks the first month of winter in Australia and while Australian's take this opportunity to start booking their European holidays to escape a type of cold you feel in the core of your being, the majority of Melburnians have to endure the work grind in our much loveable, but ‘bloody cold’ city.

Winter fashion for some is a welcomed calendar event – basking in the knowledge that they have amazing trenches waiting to debut for the season accompanied by coveted thigh high boots. For others it is an excuse to simply rug up… in some cases in what may appear to be their doona?

Melburnians hit the retailers both online and in person in search of winter essentials. Therefore, prepare yourself for the flood of The North Face, Kathmandu & Madison The Label puffer jackets... vests, heavy knits, an array of sleek leather jackets and your trusty hoodies … to fill cafes, walkways, shopping centres and strips. However, my question to you is rather than bulk up, have you considered the art of layering this winter? My winter style secret is literally overlays, as this can easily add character to your outfit – and of course, keep you warm.

Have you heard about the Hana Overlay Knit by Madison The Label?

If you are on the hunt for a trusted wardrobe essential or knit, look no further… you can thank me later! Currently I have a serious crush on the Hana Overlay Knit (by Madison Square Clothing) in all colours - black, grey, beige and khaki! It is so easy to wear and hugs in all the right places, if you get what I mean?

About the Hana Overlay Knit….

1. It is a chameleon, by that I mean the Hana comes in so many colours: black, grey, khaki and beige.
2. It can be dressed up with a sexy Mom jean and a pair of mean kicks, or alternatively dressed down with low-heel boots or your favourite street trainers.
3. It is the ultimate layering piece. Stay warm and look fabulous when you layer away.
4. Trend alert! This knit has a stepped hem, which means it is longer in length adding to the appeal of layering!
5. Long front coverage for those days where you genuinely want style and comfort…. And maybe an opportunity to comfort eat ;)
6. It hosts a stylish crew neck (aka. round neck), which is starting to make a comeback in fashion circles. So the good news is that a crew neck always complements the other features of your garment, as it is a subtle detail.
7. Due to the light-weight of this garment, it easily transitions from winter to spring and then summer – versatility in your wardrobe is essential!
8. Layered panels are a great way to utilise one colour and still ensure the garment has character and charm! Check!
9. It is 55% Acrylic and 45% Cotton. Therefore it has elasticity and still remains breathable!
10. Washing is easy – delicate hand wash (or cycle) added garment protection if you put it in a wash bag, make sure the temperature is set on 30 degrees. Dry and then lightly iron for the best results.

So I encourage you to check out the range of Hana Overlay Knits available online this winter and see for yourself. It's a gem to have in your wardrobe.

Enjoy the Beauty of Shopping with Zippay

Shopping for us ladies has an intoxicating promise of looking beautiful all the time, of controlling what's about to come in the future. Women regardless of the time of the year or the condition of the economy are drawn towards shopping. We are always wondering how to fight the desire to own those amazing pair of boots or that new dress with a stunning neckline or those in trend wide leg flowy pants, etc. The choices seem to be endless, and we want them all, don't we?

The second we open our wardrobe we hear whispers coaxing us to get something that we don't have. But what is the solution? How do we end up buying everything that you fancy without burning a hole in the bank account? Can't think about a way out? Well, we have one. It is called the incredible benefits of Zippay.

I believe that wardrobe malfunctions are if not equally, more remembered, as the fashion delights of the past. Let’s take a walk down memory lane and narrow it down to some of the top fails:

143.6 million viewers witnessed Nipplegate, when Justin Timberlake revealed Janet Jackson’s breast, nipple and ugh, nipple accessory at the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show performance. Nicole Kidman’s nip slip didn’t even compare!

Speaking of Justin, his former childhood sweetheart Britney Spears, stepped out of a vehicle in 2017 unfortunately allowing the paparazzi to photograph her choice of no panties or skin coloured panties, still debatable.

Then there are the panty flashes from Emily Ratajkowski as she was swinging her dress split at the Golden Globes or Hollywood heavyweight, Anne Hathaway as she hopped out of the car at Les Misérables premiere in NYC.

American Pie and Sharknado star, Tara Reid has given paparazzi more than just a nip slip, the devastated actress gave them more a loose boob.

Breasts slipping out of a corset or top, doesn’t seem to be as uncommon as one would think, with repeat victims of fashion malfunctions, such as Ri Ri, Lady Gaga and Bella Hadid (occurring during the Cannes Film Festival in different years) and Pamela Anderson.

Singing sensation, Toni Branxton and gorgeous Australian Myer Ambassador Jennifer Hawkins both have something in common and that is bearing too much butt! Big Brother UK contestant Lateysha Grace suffered a zip split when twerking on television to the delight of the host (as he knew it would go down in TV’s historic fails).

This list truly goes on with anybody and everybody falling victim to an outfit malfunction from the likes of Sophie Marceau (an underwear flash) and Margot Robbie (an unzipped dress on a red carpet).

There are many factors as to why fashion fails occur, and it comes down to the brutal battle of science (gravity and engineering) versus art (design and architecture). The imagination is limitless…. but the human body has curves, bumps and humps… and carelessness or alcohol related behaviour, which science cannot prepare for.

“Turn your obstacles into opportunities and your problems into possibilities.” – Roy Bennett once said. Ok, so here goes:

Zipper Ade:

With a quick clip avoid the zip slip, and the feeling that your lady parts are on show or a weak dress zip falling down your back.

Button Extenders:

Surprisingly useful, if you struggle with weight gain and loss. This is also a winner during pregnancy when trying to get more wear out of your garments.

Double Sided Tape:

This little beauty has saved the best of us from exposing too much breast (whether you are big busted or not) – or too much of your lady behind. Ensure low-cut tops/dresses and backless outfits are your friends, not your foes.

Patches (Cover Up Holes):

Belly button rings/jewellery, nipple rings and studs and jean buttons – are those rotten, dirty scoundrels causing holes in your garments. Or moths. Moths will definitely do it too. They like to eat clothes. So do goats, but that is less likely.

Sweater Stone (Lint Roller):

Cat or dog hair can be a real problem if you are an animal lover who loves to dress in black. There is also the case of a random tissue rampaging in your wash. And then there is the simple inevitable pilling of aged garments… all are easily fixed with a lint roller.

Tis the Season to Get Fancy…

I feel like my spirit embodies mostly everything that Christmas represents, like a damn fancy Bon Bon. And we all know, the fancier the Bon Bon– the better!Everyone wants to hear the joke, see the surprise inside and it may not be exactly what they wanted, but the element of excitement is always there!

The outfit you choose to wear will be a topic of importance around this time. It really is the season for dressing up fancy ‘n’ all, but in the RIGHT kind of way.

Elf shoes, Santa hats, festive slogan tees and reindeer antlers are generally not my style. In saying that, I do love the warmth of the festive season and I take the opportunity each year to dress my part. So, let’s dig deep now, what are the real underlying struggles for an outfit choice during the festive season?

The outfit…

Around Christmas and New Year my biggest issue is “What do I wear?”. Nothing fits, because I have been hitting the eggnog a little too hard throughout December – and, as if answering questions about where my life is headed; and what my new year’s resolution will be isn’t pressing enough.

Not to forget that Facebook, Instagram and SnapChat have exposed 90% of my wardrobe! Who wants to do a repeat-outfit in front of the FB list (in real life)? So, it leaves me searching for the most fitting and appropriate outfit ensemble.

Festive feels…

Another unfixed variable, which seems to rear its head at almost any time it wants – are my hormones. Planning outfits to suit my body at different ‘times of the month’ is bringing the cray cray on a new level with bloating – there is no joy in looking like the pudding being served. So, wearing something that’s stylish and comfortable is my recommendation and the best bet yet.

The relos…

Unless you have a close family (extended included) or a group of friends, for which you consider your family, it can often feel like judgement day. This is, judgement day on annual repeat with a bunch of eclectic relatives that one should feel excited about seeing. Your outfit needs to match who you are representing on the day.

So, these are my timeless tips to dominating any festive gathering with style:

Stay away from offensive & or political slogans on your t-shirts.

Weigh up whether Christmas knitted winter sweaters are a good look for you. Perhaps good for a laugh (or being laughed at), depending on what tickles your fancy, but in general Christmas winter jumpers/sweaters are not always flattering. Period. Also, the weather here in Australia is warmer during the Christmas period, so wearing a jumper is not always the best option.

Dress appropriately to match the way you are going to consume;

Food (loose clothing); or

Alcohol (non-revealing)

Mood swings are never a good accessory. Work out your body clock for this time of the year prior to picking your outfit, for example if you are pre-menstrual/pregnant/hormonal… move towards loose fitting attire and subtle colours.

Wear comfortable footwear in the land down under, as Christmas falls in summer. You are in Australia, the land of thongs is a normal go-to footwear, so utilise if you can!

Wear natural make-up, as we don’t want you competing with the Christmas tree.

We all love a good hair piece, but tinsel weaved through your hair can sometimes scream ‘attention’ to fellow attendees and may seem like you’re trying too hard to bring the “merry” to the party. Yikes!

Lastly, smile… even if it is the last thing you want to do, just smile. It will make your outfit complete as ‘you’re never fully dressed without a smile’.

Why should you pick wide leg pants over the other pants?

Keeping aside the factor that they are super comfy, there are several other reasons why you should pick the wide leg pants. Wondering what are these reasons we’re talking about? Take a look.

The look of the past, will rock your present.

Everything that was once fashionable in the 70s, have a way of making an entrance, but the wide-leg pants are an absolute favourite of the fashion peeps. The ultra-modern look and the touch of sophistication makes these pants a hit.

Choose wide leg pants every day, for different purposes.

They serve every purpose you are planning to dress up for. Formal, casual, date night, parties, or simply a fun and outdoorsy feel.

Time to feel comfortable and look sophisticated.

Oh, you can feel like the free and untamed spirit that you are in this comfortable and relaxed attire. You don't need those good awfully tight pants that cause unbearable pain and discomfort all day.

Add a few inches to your height.

Have you always thought about how you would look if you were just a little taller? Of course, you have. We all have. Well, you can't do anything about that now or can you? The wide leg trousers make your legs slender and add height to your frame. Choose the all-time fashionable stripes and you will be able to create the illusion of being taller. The tight fitting around the waist will cover up those bulges and give you a toned look.

How can you style your wide leg trousers?

Now, is the time to pick the pant hems that are wide. This forgiving yet fashionable pants can be worn with a tucked in shirt, a well fitted sweater, or a casual t-shirt. It all depends on how you want to dress up.

It’s an absolute must to have the essential shade of either navy, olive, camel, cream, black, grey, or white. If you feel lost amidst the plethora of choices in wide leg pants, then turn to the safe and neutral colours. They will never fail you. The style that is currently everyone's favourite is the drawstring, front-tying one.

Go for cropped wide leg trousers. The cropped style, along with a well fitted waist will create a flattering look. Pair it with a pair of stilettos, and voila!

How about the combination of jeans and wide leg trousers? This fashion forward style is to absolutely die for. Wear it on the lazy summer mornings to pull off a trendy look. Now, you can pick various styles in this. Cropped and high rise is one of our favourite styles. A pair of sneakers along with a striped tee will not only be easy but extremely fashionable.

You have to accentuate your waist, to achieve that tuck in your shirt or top. Remember you need to maintain the balance. To flaunt the silhouette of your pants, it is necessary to keep your loose or tight shirt/top/tunic tucked in. If you pick a front tie detailing, it will accentuate your waist further and help you look sensational.

Wanna try a jumpsuit? This year fashion is all about wide leg pants, jumpsuits, and jeans. The comfortable and fabulous look of the jumpsuits is perfect for an everyday, casual look.

6 Fashion Trends Review (Just A Little Fun)

1. Bike Shorts – Struggle-Ville.

Is someone throwing a welcome (back) party for a camel toe? Enter… bike shorts. My issue with bike shorts is that they strike me as elongated Spanx (underwear)! My thoughts are that someone was mid-outfit in their Spanx, had thrown on their shirt/blazer and had an epiphany. Wear it to a party, where people refer to your outfit as bold or edgy and voila, the bike short is en trend.

2. The Belt Bag – No.

The new innovative bum bag, which fashion houses have decided to label belt bags. YSL did a gorgeous delicate version and then Burberry upped the anti with what I can only describe as an oversized stomach satchel. This trend dances on the don’t go there line, with dance being such a calm insinuation. More twerking.

3. Puffy Everything – Not a Fan.

Puffy Jackets and sleeves are back in a big way – the kind of way that will make you feel as if a jumping castle is swallowing you. I am not sure if we are thinking of the sleeves made fashionable in 1908 or if the 80s are creeping. Then brace yourself, it happened a full-suit puffy onesie, when you thought your eyes could take no more. Is it fashion or simply a variation on an inflatable sumo suit? I am not sure what this trend symbolises, clouds or puff pastry. Baffled.

Ref: https://www.pinterest.com.au/pin/513128951286293653/?lp=true

4. Yellow Mustard, Head-to-Toe – Dont Do.

I sit on the fence with this one. Yellow has many shades: bright, dull, fluoro, pale, pastel, etc. So this can genuinely be a difference of opinion. But if you don’t make this colour pop with complementary accessories (like blue pumps or teal green earrings), then consider yourself to be mimicking a minion… or worst yet dirty sand.

5. Oversized Neutral Suits – Not a Fan.

Curves, what curves? Oversized neutral suits, will not only strip any concept of a body shape, but will also create a camouflage to rival camo gear. Femineity took a back step; I thought it was about the power to flaunt what ya mama gave you with pride. Not hide, so that if a strong gust of wind blows past, you may be mistaken for a kite.

Reality check, if you are not a Jenner/Kardashian or A Star is Born, breakout actress, Lady Gaga then this ensemble I feel looks ridic.

Ref: https://theamericanbarber.tv/2018/10/16/both-rock-oversized-suits-blonde-hair-hollywood-life/

6. Floral Fun - What Not To Do!

Florals is the quintessential challenge of reflecting all which you find beautiful in nature. There are beautiful prints available in all colours and styles. But like everything in life, try to do it tastefully. Exhibit A – Vale Robin Williams Versus Kim Kardashian in a floral-off.

Name an irresistible frozen dessert… Gelato?

Name an irresistible fashion item… Gelato!

Gelato is NOT normally associated with Italian fashion.

Uttering “Gelato” in Italian, will most likely get you a much-loved dessert. Still winning! However, the word Gelato brings all kinds of goodness; and I am going to give you another reason to lust over this fabulous word.

Winter is almost here! Are you looking for a new pair of jeans to match your current wardrobe? Look no further! If this is the first time you have heard of Refuge’s range of ‘Gelato’ jeans, allow me to walk you through your shopping experience.

When buying jeans, this is the mental checklist we should check off in our minds:

Colour.

Fresh, yet stylish.

Trendy.

Affordable.

Flattering.

Quality.

Comfortable.

Available online.

The Zebra Effect knows fashion.

Refuge Denim is an established Sydney boutique denim label hosting stylish affordable pieces for women with soul and attitude, that want to stay-on-trend!

And these gems are one of our best sellers! Zebra women are rocking these bad-boys all round Australia!

Must-have colours are Black (Onyx) and Sapphire…

However, if you want some colour to make your style pop there is also Rust (Mocha), Sand, Light Blue, Khaki, Charcoal (sold-out) and White. Oh, and if you were one of the 24.5 million people worldwide who watched the Royal Wedding you may have noticed that both Oprah and Serena Williams were glowing in shades of pink. If this is a hint of the fashion to come then, I would also get your hands on Blush - which could be yours with just one-click.

Baby, I'm sorry (I'm not sorry)

Not sure if you have a theme song when you walk into a room… or make an entrance.

I like my clothes to empower me and I always want to be on my A-game.

These jeans are unapologetically ah-mazing mood-lifters and why?

Refuge has done their homework on what women want and how they want to feel in jeans. They have focused on the cut, colour and strengthening the positives by hugging a woman’s body in the right places (legs and butt).

Comfortable

Unlike other stiff denim jeans, the Gelato Legs just slide on… no stress, hassle or breaking a sweat. THIS IS HOW your wardrobe items should fit, with comfort and ease.

And the best part about Gelato legs, they don’t judge even if you have eaten that leftover chocolate cake in the fridge. They are flexible, like all good things in life should be and provide elasticity to support real-life activity.

Quality

These quintessential figure-pleasing jeans are of a high quality and when you wash them – you will soon realise that is how they will stay!

*Always read clothing wash instructions to make the most of your garments.

Refuge jeans are all about comfort (cheers to that!) – so they’re made from the most beautifully super soft stretch fabric you’ve ever seen in a pair of jeans. The soft cotton blend fabric moves with you; so these jeans wear like leggings = jeggings heaven.

They’re affordable.

They have the look and are boutique designer jeans - and we’re excited to be able to bring them to our Zebra ladies without the expensive price tag. Truth be told, we love what you get for the price - and that’s why we stock Refuge.

This is a purchase you won’t regret. It is also affordable and allows customers to stay on-trend without breaking the bank.

A definite wardrobe essential (all-year round), and you won’t stop at one pair.

The colours are addictive and turn what may appear as a casual staple, work get-up, into a chic and dressy fashion piece.

Afterpay, the New Fashionista Way….

In life we all experience the feelings of desire… the other night, I really desired what my husband had ordered when we went out for dinner… Haha. No, seriously… as a fashion lover there is a constant feeling of desire. Fashion is an expensive love. It involves maintenance and constant attention; however, so is the pressure of paying for… um, I don’t know… your electricity bills.

So how does one’s survival interfere with one’s passion for fashion and the FESTIVE SEASON? The. Struggle. Is. Real… and sometimes using a credit card can feel like you are paying for items with Monopoly money (until repayments rear their ugly head and overwhelm your life). It is an intangible way to lose control of your spending.

Afterpay is the method of ‘buy now’ and ‘pay later’… in instalments of course.

There are no hidden fees or interest. However, there is a requirement of commitment and planning, hence not falling into the trap of debt, decline and denial. The latter (denial) is normally not understood by your financial institution when trying to explain your situation.

Here are some TOP tips of creating a healthy relationship with the Afterpay process:

Limit the amount of items you choose to purchase in a month (or over several months), so that you also can buy food.

Ensure that you know what you are earning (whether you are on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly wage) – and work out four equal payments that are going to be deducted, as you would with any bill.

Plan ahead for bills and create a budget for spending on lust-haves.

Treat Afterpay wisely, don’t spend what you don’t have. It works similarly to that of a credit card (without interest) – so don’t overspend!

It is a great option and in many ways a “new” lay-by system, but even better as you get the item before its paid off!! Stay ahead of yourself with payments – don’t try to break-even, instead; try to be wise and purchase items which won’t leave your account balance a distant memory.

If you are a serial spender then open up a separate account for “luxury spending” and monitor your online spending. That way you can deposit your ‘disposable income’ accordingly and take advantage of the Afterpay method.

Set-up reminders and don’t ignore these payment reminders (emails & texts).

For all first time users of Afterpay, enjoy the flirtation – and may your experience blossom into a strong, healthy relationship.

Enjoy the festive season, spend wisely and remember ALWAYS make fashion choices that illuminate your inner shine.

------------------------

Payment Options

The Zebra Effect provides customers with the following payment options:

- Credit Card

- Paypal & Paypal Express

- Bank Wire Transfer

AND now,

- Afterpay.

This payment method allows TZE customers when at checkout to 'Buy Now and Pay Later' in 4 simple (and equal) instalments. Each fortnight an instalment is due.

If you're over 18 and new to Afterpay, then firstly you must sign up and register your details.

To qualify as a member, you must agree to the Afterpay terms:

Must be of legal age - 18 years old

Own a credit or debit card

Reside in Australia (live in the great down under)

Provide valid contact details, such as your mobile and email address.

Once a member, you are free to shop and spend using this amazing method by selecting the Afterpay option at checkout and then, by logging on with your existing Afterpay credentials each time you wish to make a purchase. It is that easy.

Selfie Exposed

Selfie Exposed

Anna Wintour stated, “I have never taken a selfie” in a recent Vogue interview. And if you listen closely…there it is, the sound of collective gasps worldwide.

Since 1988, Editor-in-chief, Dame Anna Wintour has set many trends. However, the ruler of the fashion world has claimed to have never indulged in a selfie. If you don’t know whom I am referring to, think the Devil Wears Prada and solid Chanel framed sunglasses on a face framed with the strongest bangs ever witnessed.

Selfie benchmarks…

There are many selfie fails, which include people taking selfies in awkward situations (toilets or at funerals), or even at the cost of other peoples’ misfortunes (accidents and disasters). However, let’s focus on the selfies that promote love and goodness.

Celebrities and their selfies have been battling for many years on social media to earn the most likes and ‘break the Internet’, especially on Instagram (app). Selfie royalty includes the likes of Selena Gomez, all the Kardashian/Jenner crew and Justin Bieber who makes selfie-clips too!

Selfie benchmark #1 – dubbed the “Oscar Selfie” is where the hashtag term #SquadGoals had true meaning.

Selfie benchmark #2
The styled selfie. A coveted image of a person taking a selfie, whilst being captured. Subject being the Kardashian-West clan. This is next level.

Selfie benchmark #3
The ultimate (if not impossible) selfie... This is just incredible and unique.

Selfie benchmark #4
The desired action shot, which almost didn’t happen… but did.
Possibly captured with a GoPro or Yi.

Selfie benchmark #5
The infamous duck lips/pout… Does it actually make a person look more appealing to viewers? It has been emulated by so many people, that I am genuinely confused by this benchmark.

Ever wondered… who did it first?

Based on popular opinion, it is believed that amateur chemist and photography enthusiast from Philadelphia, Robert Cornelius, set up his camera to capture the first selfie in 1839.

Selfie Psychology – Best Self Forward

The 21st of June is National Selfie Day. Yes, this phenomenon has been etched into the fabric of our society and has its own official day. The act of the selfie has made people famous, well for simply being themselves.

We all preach the power of loving ourselves… to our friends, family, community and honestly anyone who will listen. However, the minute someone chooses to share their love for themselves in selfie-form, whether it captures their gym-body, new shoes, park visit, etc., the audience, which once supported the ‘self-love notion’ becomes instantly conflicted.

There is another theorem the ‘selfie-paradox’, based on the selfie-perception. An individual takes a selfie and deems it self-ironic or unique. Yet, when viewing other selfies, finds them superficial and self-presentational.

Introducing the third-party critic; whom, views the selfie as an indulgent act, which should be cringed upon. German researchers in Frontiers in Psychology, claim that most people would prefer to never see another selfie again.

http://journal.frontiersin.org/article/10.3389/fpsyg.2017.00007/full.

There are many brutal responses, which fill our comment feeds when a selfie is deemed ‘unworthy’ for public viewing. However as many psychologists have determined it could actually be improving personal development and be a positive area of self-growth, love and awareness. Unless the selfie is of your private parts or if grotesque acts; then, that is one for your therapist to discuss.

Pamela Rutledge, Director of the non-profit Media Psychology Research Center, “…argues that ‘aspirational’ selfies, or those intended to present one’s ‘best self’ aren’t just about gathering ‘likes’ – they’re also actually an effective way for people to see a path toward behaviors and attributes they desire for themselves. ‘Posting high points in life increases confidence, empowerment, gratitude, and appreciation through mindfulness, and the ability to visualize desired outcomes’…”

Times Have Changed…

Mobile phones provide the perfect selfie platform. Reverse camera is magic! You are able to see yourself in what is a mirrored effect, allowing people to capture a well-posed and styled image, alone or with friends.

Rewind to a time when phones did not have imbedded cameras. Phones were purely talking devices. A time when people would carry a camera (actual camera) in their bag to capture ‘that moment’ also dubbed a ‘Kodak moment.’

I raise my hand. Yes, I too carried a bulky camera everywhere to capture my adventures – and then when the film was finished, I would anxiously wait for the film to be processed and developed. Why? To see how many photos out of 30-something, which were not blurred! Unfortunately, my camera wasn’t digital with a preview option.

I was born in a period where mobile phones didn’t have cameras; and most people didn’t have mobile phones. A selfie was a normal shot of pure #guesstemation.

When you wanted a group photo and there was no one to take it, you would strategically hold an actual camera at arms length, to the perfect position to capture yourself and friends. Half a head and half a smile later….

Alternatively, you would try and set up a timer to capture the group image… which often captured the group, and the half of the person who was running back to join the photo after setting up the timer.

Another favourite was the passport photo booth. Did anyone ever use it for passport photos? I remember it being a way to document a first date?

Fast-forward to 2017 and you will more than likely find yourself in a Selfie booth, especially if you attend any type of event! And this raises the likeliness of you using selfie props.

Have you taken a selfie lately?

The art of taking the perfect selfie is so advanced – there are now equipment options to help an individual reach the optimised result.

Last week, I sat in my car, waiting for my take-away pizza order. Bored. So I began snapping numerous selfies, as you do. I genuinely had no purpose either, I just felt the light was right and my skin was glowing (I owned this moment). One photo made the final cut, whilst the remaining hundred are deemed non-useable selfies are manifesting on my camera roll.

Change The Way You Selfie With These Few Tips:

1. Tilt your head to an angle or aim the camera angle up. Sharpening your features.

2. Style the selfie; make sure there are no mirrors or distractions in the background. Use props where necessary and know the theme you are attempting to generate.

3. Turn off the flash (especially if you are taking a mirror-selfie). The flash can’t only highlight any makeup errors… it can also show what is on your mirror (streaks, dirt) etc.

4. Find the perfect natural lighting. This provides an authentic feel to the image and has proven to be more appealing.

5. Use filters, toning, shading etc. that is if you aren’t a Photoshop genius!

Here are my two favourite ‘selfie’ support tools…

The Selfie Stick.

In a world of doubt, the selfie stick is the answer! It is photo validity, that proves a subject to really be in the experience, as the selfie stick allows them to feature in the photo.

I have been able to capture photos with my children and fur children, due to the reach on this prop… it is vital and worth its weight in gold if used correctly. In public it may scream ‘extreme tourist’ or ‘narcissist’ (shaming the user), as it doesn’t have the subtle presence of most digitally designed tools, however it is a game changer in the world of selfies.

The Pop Socket.

This essential phone gadget makes it a breeze to get the perfect selfie, or prop your phone at an angle for some tiny screen video viewing.

Self(ie) Empowerment

Stop what you are doing and pay attention…. When styled properly drop crotch pants are hot! Do I hear a hell yeah?

Males and females are rocking this amazingly versatile style… and I am sold! This style does not hold any gender or cultural discrimination; it literally transcends all borders, and has been embraced worldwide throughout the centuries.

Lately, I have watched athletes jogging by in drop crotch pants, women wearing drop crotch pants elegantly when dining at restaurants; and MTV had a 90s tribute featuring MC Hammer in vibrant red, metallic bronze and silver drop crotch pants shuffling across my screen to pop rap classic, ‘U Can’t Touch This’. And I must say, a prerequisite for wearing these bad boys is definitely to own the look.

Historical moments of the drop crotch.

First sited in Persia during the 20th Century… this style embodied modesty and innocence. The humble beginnings of the drop crotch pant have been linked to the dress-like tunic called Dhoti, which was worn traditionally as a male garment in the Eastern world. As cited via hippyclothingco.co.uk, “The dhoti also known as pancha, mardani or veshti is a traditional men's garment worn in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal.” And as you can see below, it was all the rage in Algeria approximately 2,000 years ago.

Source: By William Vaughn - https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=16111121

Then woman’s rights activist Amelia Bloomer who was quite infamous for her style during the 1800s, brought reintroduced society to the drop crotch pant, referred to as the “bloomer”. And then in 1911 Puck Magazine depicts chic female strength on its front cover.

The socially proclaimed King of the Drop Crotch pant is MC Hammer, without a doubt! This iconic 80s/90s entertainer made the drop crotch pant as his signature look (the Hammer pant)… giving it life in fashion terms for many years to follow and causing influence in many diverse subcultures.

And if you want to etch any type of trend into the history books, just ask Disney to jump on the bandwagon. It was obvious, Aladdin knew that a ‘good’ drop crotch was a way to win over the ladies…

So what is a crotch drop pant and how can you spot one?

The style has continued to be tweaked in the fashion world and reinvented for different genres and categories. The idea is that the drop crotch pant, subtly should drop an onlooker’s attention away from your crotch… it is the piece of material – known as the rise, which inadvertently hangs in between your legs (leaving your goodies to the imagination).

Heated debates over the concept of the drop crotch has ranged from international catwalks to your local café chats… the reality of the hot or not topic is, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I personally always choose to embrace different.

So, let’s do the math in 2017…

Drop: to let or have (something) fall vertically
+
Crotch: sacred region of the human body, between the legs, joining the torso (middle region).
=
Justin Bieber

Who ever said, that I wasn’t good at maths?

Do you feel like you’re about to drop a beat?

Then check out my favourite drop crotch pants in the fashion scene and learn about the different ways to style them. These pants are the poster-child for fashion comebacks and comfort – so be at ease with the knowledge that once you secure your very own pair of drop crotch pants, they will never go out of fashion!

Pack light.

Two cruel words for anyone whose clothes and shoes are like their children.
My mind’s voice is always spiteful with this instruction.

Or be strategic and take half the amount of clothes and bring extra money ;)

Travelling is important. It opens up your mind and body to new experiences and the unknown. Work or pleasure, it is becoming a constant for many lifestyles, including mine.

Excited to be escaping Melbourne’s lack of sunshine for a few days; and heading up north for a work function this July, I was faced with the paradox of excitement… what should I pack?

So as per usual, I went through my schedule… dressing myself for each meeting, function and experience ahead. Then I set some clothing rules for this visit – versatility and lightness. Cue light bulb.

My number one choice became clear – my Refuge jeans!

Not only are they easily versatile from morning meetings to night-time liaisons they are perfect for packing light! Packing tip… if you fold these jeans and they seem to take up unnecessary suitcase room… roll them!

I decided to limit myself to three pairs of jeans.

1. Black REFUGE Oil Riggers –
If you don’t own a pair, do yourself a favour and invest! These jeans are not only glam, buy comfortable. The stretchy material is seductive and deceptive. The high waist is perfect to sculpt my figure and keep me feeling supported. I always keep them on hand for dinners, a dressy work event, or a night out dancing!

*Care for these jeans carefully, to ensure longevity for the rubber sheen coat. I swear by wash-bags and flipping them inside out – on a gentle hand wash (machine).

2. Dark blue REFUGE Gelato Legs –
These jeans… will be your everything and more! I literally live in them. This fabric moulds to your body and always makes me feel toned! I am at ease in the knowledge that they are comfortable and the colour is perfect for daytime meetings with a pair of heels. Then, when you need to change from chic to casual-chic the transformation is effortless, with a pair of cute loafers or Havianas! Also, great to wear on flights, super comfortable!

3. Light blue (distressed) REFUGE ripped knees –
Oh I love emulating a season, when dressing. These jeans make me feel like summer!! My go-to jeans for a fun energetic breakfast with big shades and a classic light tee, tucked in at the front and a long necklace.

I also wear these jeans when I am sightseeing or attending sports events… even walking along the beach (rolled up of course). So versatile and currently trending; therefore always an easy option.

And there you have it, my staples for any short trip. Now please excuse me while I work out what tops, dresses and blazers to pack.

On that note I will leave you with this beautiful sentiment from Madeleine Albright…

The Ups and Downs of all Weddings…

“You may now kiss the bride.”

It is pretty standard – no matter what religion, gender or race, there is a celebration of a union between two people, sealed by a kiss. However another commonality at weddings is poor dressing – I am not discussing clothing choices, but more to the point – the undergarments.

I am trying to respectfully give the bride and groom my undivided attention. BUT I just can’t!

The ceremony is being conducted in one of the most picturesque churches, located in an affluent suburb; and the guests are all quite conventionally handsome. HOWEVER, I can’t concentrate on the bride and groom. Why you ask?

Because the lady in front of me is wearing a skin coloured skirt with full brief black underwear. How do I know? Because, I can see them! Now, I am not here to pick on my fellow sisters or brothers…

Dressing for a wedding can be a task in itself (even for a guest), there is the dress colour (am I showing up the bride OR am I going under the radar?), cut of top/dress (do I look like I am trying to meet my groom?) or style (do I look like my mother?)... yes it can get hectic, even for people who have their outfit ready a week prior to the event. By hectic I am insinuating the non-cooperation of hair, shoes and makeup (the list goes on).

My point is that I am writing to my sisterhood with enlightenment on the ups and downs of wedding attire. Literally.

Underwear. Yep, we all own it and we all seem to struggle with it.

My top tips for wearing the RIGHT underwear to any formal occasion – this stems from my four years as a professional bra fitter in retail giant Bras N Things:

Skin coloured underwear belongs under ANYTHING white. That means if it is white, don’t even look at your sexy white or black briefs!

Get your bra fitted, your bra cup should be smooth over your breast. It is not meant to cause a double breast effect… at any time. This is not cleavage, this is distracting for fellow guests.

Never wear “tight” v-strings or g-strings with a fitted dress, as this will make you look like meatloaf. Make your underwear work around your body not vice versa. There are also seamless variations in these ranges.

“Going commando”, requires hygiene and appropriate skirt length and etiquette. Do not dance like you belong in an 80s aerobic video… no dips or high kicks either. This causes fellow guests unnecessary eye burn.

There are convertible bras to ensure support whilst providing backless perfection, if your top is going to hang… let that be your only hanging feature.

Strapless bras – you need a good one. No matter your size you are from

A-G+ they are available. Utilise them or your outfit will suffer.

Avoid Visual Panty Lines (VPL)… Do not wear full briefs with tight dresses, pants or any formal attire, like ever. Leave your undergarments to the imagination. And if you truly love your full brief comfort, invest in seamless underwear.

Lace bumpsters are sexy in the bedroom, but when worn under statin, silk or light materials. They can become a pattern under your clothes and often cause confusion for others, they type of attention that no-one really wants.

Gender neutral advice: do not wear underwear, which casually makes an appearance above your waistline, you are not Marky Mark (CK underwear model from the 90s) or Kendall Jenner at the 2017 Met Gala. Showing underwear is not seductive, it is rather tacky.

Don’t be the reason the stars of the show don’t get to shine, be a guest who is a back-up dancer! You still sparkle, but you are supporting the main act. Make the right underwear choices.

Pantone Forecasting - Greenery in 2017

We have all heard of a weather forecast, but have you ever heard of a pantone forecast?

Each morning, I wake up quickly glance through my social media apps for messages and notifications… and before I lift the doona cover off my body, alas my last app stop is to check the day’s weather forecast. So I know how to dress myself for the day ahead.

However, there is another important forecast worth understanding and that is the Pantone forecast for the season.

The weather in Melbourne is always unpredictable, so every day I find myself checking the forecast for extremities. However I only have to check the Pantone forecast once a year and then it sets the tone for the most powerful colours to encapsulate our living environments for each season.

This year the Pantone colour has been named – “Greenery”

What is the PANTONE Color of the Year?

“A symbolic color selection; a color snapshot of what we see taking place in our global culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude.” As cited via https://www.pantone.com/color-of-the-year-2017

So what does this even mean? Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute, Leatrice Eiseman expressed the following, “Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize, Greenery symbolizes (sic) the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.”

From interior décors, beauty, graphic design applications to the catwalk, the power of the Pantone colour palette is always causing social effect and cultural trends.

What makes “Greenery” even more awesome as the choice Pantone colour for 2017? It is ‘trans-seasonal’ – therefore if fashion pieces are selected wisely they can be used throughout the year in stylish ensembles!

Pantone forecasting is a way to predict the colour palette that will trend for the season. This year’s Autumn/Winter 2017 collections range from shades of black, grey and white… unearthing the natural colours of khaki green or ‘Greenery’, hazelnut and sandy beiges.

I am a self-proclaimed summer addict – I struggle to find any fault with a sunny day. To put it simply, I was not made for the cold, however my wardrobe is!

There is nothing more satisfying than the smell of my Italian leather knee-high / thigh-high boots and throwing on a warm knit, on a bitterly cold Melbourne day.

Just because we are encouraged to rug up… there is no reason to not indulge in the stylish options and trending colours available.

By selecting set colours – stylists or fashion enthusiasts are then in a position to pair them with complementing colours and feature pieces to create a particular feeling using set palettes, such as expressions of calmness or strength through iconic statements and moods.

I always try to look for the ‘positives’ in life, and admittedly my autumn and winter wardrobe always puts a smile on my face. And as per usual TZE is not missing a beat with ensuring that we are all Pantone savvy this Autumn/Winter season.

Our favourite Pantone picks from Madison Square’s Clothing AW17 Range are:

1. ‘Maya Coat Nude’ this stunning coat oozes casual chic. Having the option of wearing this nude coat with a pair of comfortable kicks or a pair of killer pumps, makes it an even more desirable season must-have. AND this ‘coatigan’ has deep pockets... major bonus points!

2. ‘Buckingham Military Coat Khaki’ is screaming Pantone sensation. This flattering design is tailored to shape your body with sophistication. Pair this striking piece with black jeans for an edgy stylish Autumn look.

3. ‘Aspen Weave Knit Cream’ has just landed a permanent date in my planner, this is the knit we all want with clever signature cross panel design – it is not only eye-catching, but most importantly it makes comfortable sexy!

Creases In Clothes - How to Fix Creases OR Avoid Them?

Don’t you just hate creases?

Take that hot new Cardy you only just bought. All those beautiful pleats and neat, straight cuffs & collars.. It’s part of what we all love about that ‘new clothes’ feeling…while it lasts. But no matter how carefully you sit or move around sometimes it takes only a few hours of wear before inevitably the dreaded wrinkles and rumples appear.

Yes, suddenly you’re rocking ‘off the floor’ better than your neighbour’s teen. Add a few washes, some hurried trips stuffed in your handbag and a couple of sessions in the dryer and that sweet new favourite has transitioned from ‘that new thing’ to ‘saggy old favourite’. Boom.

But it doesn’t have to be that way! Here’s some laundro-magic tips your mum would be proud of, for wrinkle free fashion!

Buy quality

Mum’s always said it: “If you think you’re saving money by splashing cash on some cheap fashion fixes – you’re not!” A wrinkle-free look starts with purchasing a few classic, quality items you can wear multiple ways, rather than half a dozen cheap pieces which are not cut to grain.

Quality items are cut and sewn along the fabric’s natural lines. That means when you wash them, they re-settle back into their natural shape. Cheap clothes are cut to maximise the number of garments made from a piece of fabric. This is disastrous for wrinkles!

When you’re shopping, also check fabric composition and go for items which have a low percentage in artificial fibres, which tend to wrinkle quickly.

Wash carefully

Pour yourself a glass of wine and make a night of it. Give your attention to washing your clothing properly – and your purchases will last so much longer!

Use the half-load feature on your machine: your items will spend less time in the wash, have much more room to move around, and will come out less crumpled to begin with.

Read and follow wash instructions carefully – but unless stated, use warmer water which is much gentler on fabric fibres. If you’ve never seen the point in using fabric softeners, buy some and give it a try. Softeners not only produce supple, more wrinkle-resistant clothing once dry – they work to protect fabric in the wash by reducing stress from pulling and stretching. Some laundry detergents even contain softeners!

Dry even more carefully

Remove clean clothes from the machine and give them a shake before transferring them to the dryer. End the cycle while clothes are still damp, and let them finish drying naturally. Hang tops damp on clothes hangers, lining the shoulder seams up. For pants or jeans, gently smooth the fabric out, pulling the cuffs into shape.

Avoid hanging clothes in direct sun – instead, hang them in a shady area with lots of air flow. Sun-dried clothes become hardened; you will find they produce deep creases which are difficult to remove even with lots of determination and an iron!

Steam before wearing

Steam will revitalise clean clothes which may have been hanging in your wardrobe a while. It will give you a ‘freshly pressed’ look, and produce supple fabric which will resist creasing longer through the day – but we can’t all afford a clothing steamer!

An iron works just as well, but start damp! Lightly mist your clothes with a spray of water before you start; or steam burst with your iron as you go. Your clothes will dry off as you iron and produce a beautiful press.

(Not into ironing? Us either! Throw your item back in the dryer with a cube of ice or a damp towel. Instant steam.. and wrinkle-free!)

Plan ahead

If you know you have a full day of meetings ahead, build your look from items which are thicker or woollen, and avoid wrinkle nightmares such as silk or satin.

Make sure your clothes fit! Don’t try and squeeze into something too small – or get away with wearing something which is too big or incorrectly sized in places, you are only inviting more unwelcome creases!

During the day

One of the most common places for clothes to fold and crease is near your bottom and thighs: so avoid crossing your legs when you are seated. Instead, pull fabric gently to one side as you sit down, and sit with your ankles together.

If you are travelling in the car, preserve your beautifully pressed top by removing jackets or outerwear until you get there. You can also try unbuttoning the bottom button of your shirt and laying it over your seat belt to avoid an unsightly crease!

If you do find yourself all wrinkly on the fly, head to the ladies and wet the affected area with warm water. Gently pull at the fabric back into shape. If all else fails, add a jacket or scarf!

Choker Fashion - AW17

If you’ve filled your wardrobe with cold-shoulder beauties (this aw17 season’s most flattering trend) then it could be time to experiment with Choker fashion – the two were just meant to go together.

What is Choker fashion all about?

As the name suggests, a Choker is a form of close-fitting necklace which sits right up against your skin. If you can’t get past Buffy the Vampire Slayer, just back it up a bit - like so many fashion trends borrowed from the 90’s, the current reincarnation of this flirty and feminine fashion has done a lot of growing up!

Chokers are oh, so trendy in suede, velvet, chains, ribbon, beads and leather this season; all the neutral monochromes or metallics that we love (and which go with pretty much everything)!

Unlike the bad-girl Choker of the 90’s, today’s choker fashion is sleek and edgy, and a cool alternative to a traditional necklace; plus a great way to update your look with just one simple addition.

Here’s 5 ways to wear it (without looking like Sarah Michelle Geller):

1. The Cold Shoulder Edit

The Cold Shoulder trend exploits some of a girls most attractive assets – the décolletage, collar bones and shoulders, exposing and lengthening the neck in all its glory. In some ways, choker fashion is another extension of the cold shoulder look, as it draws attention to and accentuates your upper body in much the same way. More and more cold shoulder cuts available in stores even incorporate a choker feature (like our latest obsession, the black and white Blaire choker top by Rosebullet Fashion).

2. Casual
There aren’t many fashion accessories you can pair up with your timeless classics…as well as your two-piece gym gear. Chokers aren’t just for a high-end night out! The casual choker look is refreshingly unexpected, but also…works. A simple choker band will instantly elevate your casual brunch-with-the-girls do, (just add sunnies and a takeaway latte) and add new suave to your mum-jeans, flats and tee.

Hailey Baldwin
3. Statement Glamour What’s more glamorous than a sparkling neck after dark? There are no rules when it comes to choker fashion, and that applies to bling. Pearls, leather, diamonds…can’t decide? Wear them all together! There’s something ‘Egyptian-God’ about a lady adorned with diamonds around her neck; it’s all-class and all-too-easy to do. Gild your neck with gold or silver, layer multiple chokers, or combine choker with your favourite traditional necklaces – going OTT is part of the trend! Tip: Glamming up? Remove or downsize your earrings and bracelets to avoid confusing the matter. The aim is to draw attention to the neck area; too much bling on the wrists and ears as well becomes less than classy, and will dull down the desired effect.

4. Boho Chic

Whether beach, wilderness, or festival is your Boho groove, Choker fashion is for you as well. A sweetly tied lace or suede Choker is so delicately feminine, and wears beautifully with all the softest drapes of the season. For a classic Boho look, choose a deep v-neck blouse or maxi dress, add a thin Choker and long tasselled necklace, with messy bun. Add extra interest to your Boho look after-dark by choosing a delicate chain, embossed lace or studded suede Choker, and nude lip. Chokers with charms are also charming for the Boho queen. Tip: The Boho style is always understated, so when it comes to the Choker, less is often more. Instead of adding more, think about changing up what you already have by tying asymmetrically, or making a feature of frayed fabric.

5. DIY

Crafty Zebras, Pinterest devotees and DIY-ers come into your own here – DIY Choker fashion is fun, inexpensive and easy! It could be as simple as buying some ribbon from the local two buck shop and wrapping round, or get your needles and threads out to create something more complex. Can’t bear to part with that old holey printed tee, or perfectly distressed denim? Get out your scissors, strip it back and wrap it round choker style and find all new ways to celebrate what you love about it. Hit Pinterest for some pin-spiration, as there’s plenty to be had. Pinterest has many easy Choker tutorials.

Choker fashion is playful, adaptable and here for a good time (and hopefully a long time!). It’s a trend we’re loving as we continue our adoration of the Cold Shoulder look – check back often for more ideas, and visit our new arrivals to scope out all our latest Cold Shoulder and Choker Fashion items as they arrive.

What’s not great about looking and feeling fantastic in your own skin? This next trend is one for women everywhere to embrace (Hint: The ravishing Drew Barrymore rocked it at this year’s Golden Globes).

If you’re yet to click and shop the cold shoulder look read on and allow us to show you why you should add a few off the shoulder pieces in your summer collection, yesterday.

This trend is only on the up and up; which is proof this look is definitely worth a go. It is not often, (and it’s refreshing indeed) to find a trend in which you do not have to be 25, wafer thin, hourglass shaped, flat stomached and all-over toned to pull off (and in fact, look sensational in), anywhere, anytime!

And if you’re only just discovering the cold shoulder look, you’re here at a good time; because it’s starting to morph into more gobsmackingly gorgeous variations like cut-out shoulders, one shoulder exposed and backless looks in colours, cuts and textures truly share-worthy – so you can swoop in take your pick of the best.

Here’s why the cold shoulder is most definitely for you.

Your shoulders don’t age

Have you ever noticed? And not only that – your shoulders never get stretch marks, never have ‘bad shoulder days’, get bloated after a night out on the town, or require exy shapewear to hold you in.

Your shoulders (along with your collarbones) are some of the most flattering parts of your body, and off-the- shoulder pieces draw attention right to them. Why hide your nicest assets when you could totally flaunt them and feel fab?

And more: off the shoulder dresses, tops, knits, tees & tanks make use of gorgeous ruffles, and textures which drape luxuriously around your shoulders (check out our fav flirtatious Bella Floral Print Top by Ivory & Chain to get you started) simultaneously hiding the bits you always want to hide, and showing off the bits you love most.

Up? Down? Anyway you like

Let your admiration of cold shoulder looks continue; in fact we’re confident our Zebra ladies will appreciate how effortless it really is to dress up or down a really quality cold Shoulder piece. For the evening, pair your classic cold shoulder blouse with a few choice sparkling gems, a flowing maxi or midi-skirt and your favourite pair of heels. Or for a chic everyday look, simply tuck in to your denim shorts or longs, and pair with sunglasses and some strappy sandals and you’re good to go!

(Tip: sometimes unstructured cuts can overwhelm your body, so be on the lookout for too much fabric! If you fear getting lost in folds, pair with high-waisted bottoms to bring proportion back to your look. As a bonus, lots of fabric cinched in with a belt can make your waist look teeny-tiny!)

Perhaps you’re a seasoned cold shoulder lady who has been reading with the sly smile of one who was trendy before the trend was a trend: this is for you!

If you’re into contouring with makeup, be in the know: contouring collarbones is a thing! (Youtube for a demo). You can highlight to make your bones pop even more, and slim down your décolletage for head-turning shadows without splashing out on any new products.

Plus, exploit your profile neckline with silhouette hair – a messy bun or topknot, bushy ponytail or even symmetrical, collarbone -grazing braids will dramatise your cold-shoulder look even more.

There’s not a lot not to love about this simple but addictive style – as far as we are concerned, it’s another fabulous way to wear (and be totally comfy) in your own skin - in style!

What to Wear to Your Work Christmas Party

It’s the first week of December! The warm weather’s kicked in, Christmas decorations are in the shops, everyone’s in the party mood and the office Christmas party invite has just landed on your desk.

Once the excitement (or eye-rolling) has worn off, every girl’s next thought is inevitably ‘what am I going to wear?’ And rightly so! Dressing for a work party can be stressful and fraught with faux pas (no, going in green and red for the occasion is not exempt!)

Whether it’s barefoot bowls, a cocktail party at the local club, a BBQ in the basement or a full-blown gala dinner complete with dance floor and DJ: there’s a certain etiquette which must be followed when you party with your colleagues.

If you’re normally a slap-dash kind of girl who’s ready to party in just about any old pyjamas, take a moment to consider that you’ll be sharing your Christmas canapes with your boss, and mingling with the company’s Executives. How you present yourself for the occasion says a lot about you (and can also be a reflection on your manager), so it pays to put a little more thought into your outfit than you normally would.

(With all that being said, it’s also a chance to scrub up, show off your personality and prove you’re the perfect candidate for that promotion you’ve been chasing – impressions count!)

Stressing out? Breathe, relax, no need. Here’s six tips for dressing well for your work Christmas occasion:

Dress to the code

First thing’s first - consider the venue, and time of day. The function room at the local pub for lunch and a drink will require a different dress code than a mystery bus ride to a club in the city for dinner. If the invitation doesn’t include a dress code or if you’re not sure, choose an outfit which can chameleon from something on the casual side into something super-dressy with a few well-chosen pieces of jewellery, or some lipstick added on the go. Little black dresses were invented for such an occasion! As a general rule, reserve sparkles for the evening.

Dress to impress

Especially if you’re stuck with a boring work uniform every day it can be tempting to go with your best outfit, but think twice before slipping into the slinkiest thing you can find. The ‘work do’ is the perfect place to reveal your personality – but anything more revealing than that is inappropriate. Turning heads at the work Christmas party for all the wrong reasons is most certainly to be avoided. Your reputation won’t escape you once the party is over. Be playful, but make sure you have class.

Dress occasion appropriate

Can you remember that year the guy from IT went for a swim in the fountain.. before you made it onto the wrong tram and walked 10km’s in your stilettos to get home at 4am? Following on from point number two, work Christmas parties (or after-parties) can sometimes get crazy – and if you think the occasion is going to go that way, don’t kid yourself - dress accordingly. Avoid white if your work-do is at the local BBQ joint, and beware very short (or very long) dresses and sky-high heels. Also try and avoid anything that is complicated to do up (or which might have to be taped into place) – you never know where you’ll end up, your night will be so much more enjoyable if you’re prepared!

Shop smart

If you don’t have anything ready-to-wear in the wardrobe already, shop smart. Keep it simple, keep it classy, and shop in advance. Never wear something for the first time at your Christmas party! Stay away from anything sheer or too tight, even if it’s on sale and you’d totally wear it to your girlfriend’s 30th. Clothing made from dressier fabrics in neutral, monochrome or seasonal colours you can accessorise with a pop of colour will ensure your new purchase gets air-time long after the last dance at this year’s work Christmas event. Fad fashion isn’t the go.

Accessorise to Organise

We all know that one girl with the Mary Poppins bag which seems to have a never-ending supply of spare lip gloss, bandaids, nurofen, tissues, deodorant, hair-ties, sunscreen and more. This year, that girl is you! Go prepared with a stash of savvy-girls essentials. Especially if your role is administrative or clerical, (or if you’re going for that promotion), this is a great opportunity to demonstrate your preparedness – not to mention potentially save you and your colleagues many blisters! Select a clutch or handbag which matches your chosen outfit.

Buy a jacket

Lastly – don’t spend hours selecting and assembling the perfect outfit only to throw your work jacket on for the trip in. Your outerwear shouldn’t be an afterthought! Your decolletage may look fabulous in the top you’ve chosen, but there’s no point pretending you won’t need a jacket for the way (or way home). Get yourself a smart, warm and lightweight jacket, cardi or shrug which compliments your outfit. Looking great in transit is just as important!

So there you have it, the six rules to live by at this time of year! Start thinking about your ensemble as early as you can, and take every opportunity to try it out before the day.

Being comfortable, relaxed and enjoying the occasion is more important than having the standout outfit of the night, so be sensible as well as playful, and go with the flow. Merry Christmas!

How to Pull Off a Successful Clothing Swap Party

Pinterest devotees like myself are all too comfy with the concept of decluttering, up-cycling, recycling, re-purposing, re-styling and reusing. It’s not only about being savvy, saving some cash and saving the planet – it’s also about being inventive, trying new things, connecting with other people and having a great time.

It’s a movement and a mindset – and it makes sense that the next biggest trend taking millennials and Gen-Ys by storm is the idea of clothing swaps.

Think about it. A bunch of girls. A bunch of clothing and accessories they each want to get rid of. A (few) bottles of wine. Cupcakes, guacamole and crackers, some good tunes and a mad few hours of trying on, swapping, trading, bargaining and donating excess clothing!

What’s not to love? What might seem baggy, outdated or tasteless to you might be just what the next person has been looking for. Everyone gets rid of all their excess wardrobe items, has a great time, and heads home with some fresh and exciting new fashion - without spending a cent.

Marie Kondo would be proud!

But don’t rush off to send your Facebook Clothing Swap Party invite just yet!

It may seem pretty straight-forward… but to avoid issues, make sure everyone brings home at least a few things they love (and to all remain friends throughout the process), there are a few tips you consider to ensure your clothing swap is a success.

Here are our top 5 tips for pulling off a successful Clothing Swap Party, Zebra Style:

Choose who you invite carefully

Put some thought into the sizes of the people you invite. It’s no fun at all for that one petite or that one flaunting curves who won’t fit into the size 10 – 14 average of the rest of the group. Make sure there’s at least one match for every size. If these girls are part of your close group of friends, have a lunch before or after your swap they can come along to, or incorporate shoes, scarves, jewellery or accessory into your swap as well – they are just as much fun!

You need rules!

To make sure it’s fair for everyone who comes along, you need to set (and communicate) some rules, such as:

Everyone needs to bring along the same number of items (i.e. 10)

All items should be in good wearable condition, and brought clean and pressed

The swapping will only start when everyone’s arrived

Everyone should go home with the same number of items they brought with them

These rules should be included in your invitation.

You should also communicate what will happen if there are two (or more) girls who want a particular item (for example, you could draw straws, have a model-off, or flip a coin).

Also consider including a run-sheet in your invitation, and who will make sure you stick to it!

This might include a designated 15 minutes of ‘browsing’ time to begin the day, followed by an hour allocated to trying things on, then 5 minutes allocated to each person to make the swap.

(Don’t forget to ask everyone to bring a plate for lunch or a snack!)

Donate anything left unclaimed

There’s a possibility that some items may be left unclaimed. Consider donating anything which doesn’t find a home, to organisations such as Givit, who make it easy to donate via an online platform, and who ensure the clothing reaches people who really need it. Vinnie’s and the Salvo’s are always seeking donations as well.

Merchandise!

Hold your event in a space which is free of clutter, light-filled and comfortable. A large lounge is perfect, and if you can get some tables in for your girls to use to display their wares that’s even better! The more your Clothing Swap doesn’t look like a laundry, the more inclined your guests will be to get into the trade.

Merchandise! If you have room, consider grouping similar pieces together (such as blouses in one area, and pants in another), hanging dresses and jackets on display, or arranging jewellery neatly by colour to create fresh and attractive displays.

Make sure you have at least a few change areas set aside which have full-length mirrors - and make sure everyone’s aware of which areas are not part of the swap (so that guests don't take things by accident).

Take some fashion risks

Now is your chance to try a whole lot of styles and cuts you might otherwise not. Go in with an open mind, and take everyone’s suggestions on board! If there’s a style you’ve always wanted to try, now could be your chance. Or perhaps there’s a shade of red there you’ve never thought would suit – but which actually looks great!

Take some fashion risks and try on as much as you can. It won’t cost you anything, and if it doesn’t work out, swap it at the next party! Clothing Swaps have the most success at the end of a season, so why not make it a regular event?

You never know what you’ll find. Have fun!

How to DIY Ripped Jeans

We love that jeans can even be partially destroyed and still look totally, effortlessly, incredibly, chic.

What other wardrobe item only gets better with age and wear? Our love affair with denim continues!

Ripped jeans are absolutely the denim du jour, and it’s a totally hot look which also fits for all different body shapes and types (even more to love!)

The jeans we are going for this season may be shredded, distressed or even destroyed! But they still bring together a totally polished look. A good set of heels and some bold jewellery, or maybe a sparkly top and some ankle-boots.. pair them with shredded knees and you have instant street-chic! Multi-way fashion at its finest.

So how do we get in shreds? Certainly not by buying designer! These jeans are destroyed! All the extra zeroes on the price tag just don’t add up. What gives?

Plus part of the appeal of shredded denim is that all the rips, nicks and slashes are in just the right spots – and you can’t buy that right off the shelf. So let’s (no pun intended) rip out the scissors and create our own custom set of shredded jeans! Here’s how.

Decide what you want to create. Google, pin, insta and post till you’ve got a really good idea of the look you’re after. Whether it’s a few nicks here and there to full-leg slashes, consider the extent of the cuts, and what look you’re going for. Refer back to these inspirational pictures as you’re going.

Find your base denim. Don’t start with your $200 designer jeans! Experiment on a pair you don’t wear anymore for your first try. If you’re starting with brand new jeans, buy two pairs, or a duplicate of a pair you already love and know well. If you’re beginning from new, make sure they’ve been washed a few times before you get going, to soften the fibres.

(a) Distress first. Authentic shredded denim has a ‘distressed’ look - think of it as speeding up the wearing process. You’ll need to assemble a few tools to help you: steel wool (gloves – so you don’t ruin your mani), sandpaper (if available), and a wooden block or thick card to place inside the legs so you have a solid surface to work on.

(b) Start! knees, derriere, tops of thighs and around pockets are the areas where jeans naturally wear the most, so make a start here with your steel wool or sandpaper. Work in circular patterns outwards until the denim starts to thin. (More fun? Tape sandpaper to the floor, get into your jeans then slide around on it!)

Sketch out the rips. At this stage, get back into your jeans and check out the effect so far. While you’re standing up, mark the areas you next want to cut with chalk or a pen. The slashes should line up with your knees, so use a mirror to get your marks into the right place. It doesn’t have to be perfect!

Get ripping! For this part you’ll need scissors or a Stanley knife. Make sure your thick card has been placed into the leg (so you don’t accidentally cut where you don’t want holes..) Work horizontally along your chalk lines for a more natural effect, using the edge (not tip) of the blade. Start scraping to thin out the area until it becomes a rip or begins to tear through. Sometimes you don’t have to go all the way through for an awesome shredded effect! Check in with your inspirational pictures. Is it enough just to see the exposed fibres?

Stop! Remember that the holes you make will continue to open up as you wear and wash your jeans, so make sure you stop working just before you think the rip is perfect. Put the jeans in the wash. The fibres will naturally settle into the rip, and may open up even further. While the jeans are wet, experiment with teasing and fraying out the fibres with tweezers (not necessary). If your new holes have made the jeans baggy, wash in hot water as the fibres will shrink a little.

What should I do if I tried to rip my jeans, but I think I ruined them?

Ask a friend for their opinion and you’ll probably be surprised to find they think your DIY shreds look like the bomb! Have another go on a different pair if you’re really not happy. Don’t forget, we’re coming into summer - you could also turn your attempt into a hot pair of shredded shorts!

Have fun!

How to Flat Lay like a Pro - Fashion Photography

So your pre-ordered Lost in Lunar Tasmin Cold Shoulder Top from The Zebra Effect has finally arrived on your doorstep! It’s white it’s gorgeous, it goes so well with your Black Refuge Denim and those new suede ankle boots you picked up on Bridge Road, and it’s too hot not to share! Your #instafans will love it!

But if you’re like me, no Instagram filter can ever get rid of clutter in the background, mirror reflections, or photo-bombing housemates ruining your next Instagram sensation.

Hashtag frustration!

It could be time for you to get into flat lay pictures. Instagram’s finest have been doing it for years – but with a few simple tips and a little practice, you will find that flat lay photography isn’t difficult at all. In fact, it’s lots of fun!

What’s flat lay photography?

It’s a picture of an object, or a few objects arranged together on a flat surface, taken from directly above. Hashtag #flatlay – you’ll get the idea. These modern-day still life’s are bright, beautiful, and they tell a story in a clever, visual way.

Group your latest #Sephora haul with your Sunnies, Starbucks and Sandals. Having a Pancake breaky? Flat lay your ingredients on your collectors vintage linen tablecloth. Got your catch up with the girls look sorted? Show off your ensemble with a flat lay. It’s modern storytelling at its finest!

Flat lay photography is creative, interesting and - the best part? It’s easy – and you don’t need expensive equipment to do it well!

How to take the perfect flat lay photo

Think about theme and storytelling

The best flat lay photos tell a story through objects grouped together. What do you want your picture to say? Whether your story is foodie, fashion inspired, about found objects or an experience, everything you include should make sense when you put it together as a whole.

Find a source of natural light

Unless you’re using expensive flash equipment, you can’t take a great flat lay photo without good natural light. Find a spot near a window or under a skylight which will let soft, natural light fall across your scene. Shoot mid-morning or afternoon if possible (never at night or in twilight) and watch out for harsh light which will cast distorting shadows or worse – leave a phone shaped shadow across your shot!

Create a surface

Work off the floor to make it easier to shoot from above. Floorboards can look sensational in a flat lay photo; although it is safer to start with a white background when you’re starting out. Use a clean sheet or even some sheets of paper, and arrange your items on it. While it’s easier to work on a white or block-colour surface, think about textures and patterns as you get more practice, and choose backgrounds which accentuate, rather than overwhelm your objects. Coloured fabric, timber floorboards, or paper make the best flat lay background foundations.

Place your items

Select one or two main objects, and place these first. Whether it’s your pretty new Refuge White Soft Kylie Crop Top and clutch or your favourite item of jewellery or even a movie ticket: your main objects should be the focus of your story. Next, pick two or three secondary objects which help set the scene or act as embellishments. Check your arrangement from a birds-eye-view (get up on a chair and look down on your flat lay scene) and make some adjustments if you need to. (If you really want to take your flat lay pics to the next level, check out this great article from Wikipedia on the rule of thirds). Don’t forget Instagram photos are square – so flip your camera settings to square so you can visualise your picture.

Think about white space

White space is the area between your objects, and around the edges of your frame. If you don’t have enough white space, your objects will feel cramped and your flat lay will look too busy. If you have too much white space, your objects will get lost and appear too far away. Try lining your objects up for great symmetry, creating patterns with your objects, or mixing up large and small objects together. Make sure there’s the same white space around each of your objects, and enough space around the edges of your frame.

Get the angle right

This part is easier if you’re using an iPhone, which has a handy grid feature which will help you get your picture flat. Shoot your flat lay from above by getting up on a chair. Don’t worry if you’re too high up, because you can crop your flat lay later. Your aim is to keep the lens as level as possible; otherwise your picture can look distorted. You will get better with practice! Shoot a few frames and choose the one which makes your objects look in proportion.

Have fun!

Lastly, experiment and enjoy yourself! The best flat lay photographs are unexpected, quirky and playful. Flat lay photography is a great way to express yourself and the things you’re passionate about! As you practice, you’ll develop a sense of what will work – and your storytelling will improve. One of the best ways to learn is to re-create; so if you find a flat lay picture you love on Instagram, have a go at re-creating it yourself with your own set of objects. Learn from the masters! Follow flat lay Pro’s on Instagram and get to know what’s possible. Have fun!

How to Find your Stripes - Confidence is Beautiful - by Gianna Lucas

Featuring a splash of inspo, a dash of passion and of course a whole lot of sparkle."

"Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.”

We can all thank American business woman and style icon, Rachel Zoe for this awesome quote and for good reason. I believe this phrase rings true for each and every one of us. We’re all unique and that’s what makes us extra spesh. And if you thought it couldn’t get any better, with our uniqueness also comes our own individual style.

In my own learnings, I’ve found that once a person comes to realise who they are inside and out, any sense of insecurity seems to flush away, making room for a flurry of contentment and confidence.

Confidence is a beautiful trait. Those who are genuinely comfortable in their skin are generally full of positivity, which is why they’re so well received and appreciated by many. They see the good, give praise and radiate kindness. Wouldn’t we all like to feel like that? And the great thing is… we can. Whoohoo!

I’m going to paint a picture for you. In this scenario we have two girls who are both equally fabulous inside and out, however their perceptions of themselves couldn’t be more far a part.

Girl One: I love my soft wavy hair. I am thankful my eyes are deep in colour. I am so happy I’m curvy.

Girl Two: My hair is anything but luscious. Why are my eyes so boring to look at? I wish I was super skinny.

I don’t know about you but it’s clear to me that ‘Girl 1’ knows who she is and is proud of her features. There’s no mention of her so-called ‘faults’, because guess what, she doesn’t care. Whereas ‘Girl 2’ is sadly struggling with her appearance. She hasn’t embraced her beautiful qualities. She is stunning, she just can’t see it.

[Top Tip: Cut the negative talk. This type of chatter is commonly known as fear and trust me, this style of talking doesn’t want to be your bestie.]

In the morning when I get up, get dressed and put a bit of lippy on, I automatically feel fabulous and ready for the day ahead. I’ve always had the belief that our style reflects our personality. If you wake up in the morning and feel a bit sluggish, I guarantee if you put on an outfit you love, you’ll feel a lot more motivated to kickstart your day.

[Top Tip: If you’re not a fan of selecting outfits in the morning, then I suggest you pre-select them the night before. This formula is always a winner.]

Fashion is forever evolving, however there is one exception to the rule – all things black and white. These two staple shades generally look good on everyone. Whenever unsure of an outfit, I find any design in black will generally be a winner. For decades black has been referred to as a classic and sophisticated shade, and if you thought that wasn’t enough, it’s super slimming too. You seriously can’t go wrong!

I recently came across an online apparel store based in Melbourne, Australia. They’re called The Zebra Effect. As their name appropriately suggests, they specialise in all things zebra! No, not actual zebras (thank goodness!), but in actual fact they’re all about black, white and neutral based fashion pieces. So in other words, any girl’s go-to destination!
