Kitchen Inspiration: English Style

Have you been watching Downton Abbey? I'm so completely wrapped up in this BBC mini-series for a multitude of reasons, one of them being the fabulous interiors of this fictional estate. While beautiful, some of the rooms might appear stiff or cold, but the kitchen quarters at Downton are always so warm and inviting. Copper fixtures and pots plus a real deal butler's pantry loaded with silver accoutrements are just some of the reasons I find this old British kitchen so appealing. Even today, it seems the English have warm, inviting kitchens down to a science, as evidenced by these classic kitchens by Plain English. The Agas and steaming kettles of tea get me every time, especially in the dead of winter.

Shooting Stars

My house is star studded (as captured recently with instagram). It's not like we intentionally set out to have stars in all shapes, forms and sizes in our home, these were just accumulated over time. It seems like a lot when grouped together here, but in real life it's really quite subtle. My love for this shape even extends right into jewelry and clothing as well! Flipping through Veranda magazine the other day, I came upon this image by sister design team, Kirsten Kelli. The Keith Haring artwork here, immediately took me back to the mid-eighties, and more significantly, a prized swatch watch that I had proudly worn then. Beyond bummed that I literally have no idea what happened to this watch, as I would love to see it again. A fervent online search revealed only this version, mine was bright red, but this is pretty close. Like a Proustian Madeleine, I was instantly transported back to this decade, which now in hindsight seems like one giant John Hughes film. Do any design elements ever make you feel nostalgic?

Getting Ready For NYIGF

Last year was the first time I ever attended the New York International Gift Fair (NYIGF). Located in the ginormous Javitz Convention Center, I was blown away by the massive amount of booths and vendors. Overwhelmed and unprepared, taking it all in proved to be futile. Now that this year's gift show is only one week away, I'm attempting to get organized with a list of the vendors and booths I'm hoping to visit. I think my shop could use a little artwork to round off our selection of home decor, and topping off this list is Spicher and Co. The artist/owner's home (shown here) was featured in Country Living, last year. It was the mermaid (above) and giant flowers in the master bedroom that really captured my attention.

I recently happened upon the blog, 365 Lucky Days, and can honestly say I'm impressed, inspired and obsessed all at once. The brain child of Canadian artist, Lucy Jackson, 365 Lucky Days chronicles the author/artist's decision to create something new everyday. And, by create, she means these darling embroidered works of art...which, here's the lucky part, are for sale on her site! With each new creation (and each day) Lucy shares a bit more of herself with her readers. The idea of pairing last year's Pantone color of the year with this year's, is compelling...however, I know I'm not this bold with my wardrobe in real life. Thankfully, everywhere I look, I'm seeing accessories that sport this daring color combo. For the "brights-trend" timid (like me) it seems this is the ideal way to tango with color blocking. Have you gone the bold hue route with your wardrobe choices yet?

Last week, Jo Malone London, appointed Charlotte Stockdale, as its new Style Editor. I did a quick search in order to learn more about this big personality in international fashion. Along with a multitude of chic editorials, I stumbled upon Ms. Stockdale's home, featured last year in British Vogue. It's completely over the top! After seeing this, I can't wait to find out what fun new direction lies in store for this smart fragrance line.

Where Were You When

Three years ago, we took on a major home renovation, which included our Master Bath. At the time I scoured the internet for inspirational images (which sort of led to starting this blog) and even though I really love the end results...I so wish I had seen this amazing Master Bath then! I mean, just look at the floor tile here, seriously dying over the floor...not to mention the amazing cabinetry and tile work. All in, the design job that Liz Williams Interiors did on this space is pure perfection.

Social Diary Standout

Last weekend, I caught up on my New York Social Diary ~~stalking~~ reading. And, now almost a week later, I literally can't stop thinking about this apartment. It's everything...The artwork here is spectacular, but this townhouse also has a great location, a lot of space and fabulous light. There's also just the right mix of traditional and modern, and the perfect balance of restraint and crazy going on here. Not to mention the sweetest little pups. yup. It has just the right amount of everything to me.

This winter I've gotten into the habit of drinking hot cocoa as an afternoon pick me up. It seems my new vice is a slippery slope, as it's fast becoming a mere conduit for whipped cream and marshmallows. So, in an effort to appear just a tad more ladylike while I indulge in my newest guilty pleasure, I'm considering these charming "headline" mugs from Kate Spade. At a minimum, I'll at least have an air of sophistication to go along with my regression...

Obsession Du Jour: Janet Hill

How great is Etsy? Wandering around the endless offerings on a seriously bitter cold day last week, I happened upon the artwork of Janet Hill. The portrait above stopped me in my tracks, and the next thing I knew I was checking out Ms. Hill's entire portfolio, blog and extensive offerings in her shop. I'm about ready to purchase one of these endearing illustrations, it's just a matter of narrowing it down to a favorite...no easy feat!

Closet Envy Strikes Again

Like many, each new year finds me trying to get perfectly organized. Which is why I love to see a beautiful closet "before and after". Truth be told, when a closet looks this great, it fills me with both envy and... what is the opposite of envy? admiration? goodwill? I'm not sure. I just know that one part of me hates the fact that my own closet will probably never look this good...but another part of me just loves to see a fab closet like this one (spotted over at the L.A. Times blog). I obsess over each image in an effort to see what organizational tips I can apply to my own life and wardrobe. It's the latter that keeps me coming back for more. That, and the fact that I'm a hopeless fashion voyeur!
