The House of the Cyclist/La Casa del Ciclista

With the New Year the next chapter of our adventure has started - Mexico; since we crossed the border on the 30th of December a whole new world was opened in front of us. This country seems to be more alife than any other place we had pedal through,( it smells, it is noisy, it talks, it dances, it's dusty, it's colorful) We love it! The New Year was in Tijuana and now we are climbing toward the desert; in the meantime in Ensenada we found this place.

The House of the Cyclist was a dream of Valdo who was a former priest from Brazil who decided to pedal across the World for the Peace. Unfortunately when he was in Baja California he got a fetal heart attack. One of the Valdo’s dream was to set up a house where touring cyclist could have a place to rest, have shower, cook and stay as long as they need. A place where you can feel at home and not just a guest. After he passed away this place was set up not far away from Valdo’s last ride, in Ensenada. La Casa del Ciclista is a wonderful small house outside of town where everybody is welcome as long as you are a cyclist traveling. We have spent 3 nights over there while we were getting things ready before heading down south to the desert; I’ve been day dreaming about a link of Casas del Ciclista all over the world where cyclist travelers are welcome. It would be a great way to promote a more environmentally friendly way of traveling overall nowadays when the global warming subject is everywhere, wouldn’t be?

With this few lines I would like to share this new idea and maybe in a short future this dream that Valdo had will start to happen in more places.

Burger in the finest american style

I'm not a beef, fan, neither burgers, but I couldn't pass through States without trying 'local couisine'. That was another of my 'american dreams' - to try a geniune american burger:) A burger that would be pretty much my first burger (I ate maybe 2 burgers in my life before, both in McDonalds, when I was young and naive and don't consider them the right burger experience:))
I've been looking for the right place for the last 3 months, and 2 days before crossing the border I started to loose my hope; I wanted one of those places by the road, with these red shiny sofas that have shared back, a place with coffe and coke refill, where they have only burgers and chips in the menu, something in my opinion 'American'.
We passed this place a day before arriving to San Diego, I haven't noticed it, but Raul did and when he shouted 'Have you seen it?' and told me what he has just seen I knew that was the place! :) A burger from '40! :) And it turned to be the right timing - we found it just when we were looking for a special place to have our good-bye-America meal. We couldn't found better place! :)

Why you should always go to bike co-ops

We often pop to bike shops to ask for small favor - a question, advice, some screws, tightening here and there. We normally go to a community bike shops and so far we always had great experience there. |For example in Portland a guy spent half an hour or more adjusting the breaks with Raul and checking other stuff and when we wanted to pay he said 'it's OK., you are on a long trip, save your money'. Recently in Santa Cruz we spent like 4 hours working on our bikes in the local bike co-op and for all the time spent, some small parts and help (lots of help!) we were charged $5 only!
Today, a day before living US, we realized that Marta's head set wobbles, so we popped to the nearest bike shop; 5 min, and the head set was tightened - they asked us for $10!!!!

Heaven, we are in heaven...

Hey! We've just realized that that what California is - paradise on Earth!
The weather is perfect, it is beautiful here, there is wine, there is plenty of food (you can farm fruit and vegetables all year long) and all Saints live here (San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Santa Monica, San Jose, San Rafael, San Diego etc. etc.)!!!

Cirque du Solei

Yes! We were so lucky to see Cirque du Solei Live! This was definitely the highlight of our stay in San Francisco, however beautiful and interesting this city is!
The show was amazing! Probably the best show we've ever seen. Whoever knows Cirque du Solei, can understand what we are talking about; whoever doesn't - hight time to check them out :)

On the way back to our bikes

It’s been over a month since we last pedal, seems so long ago…and it was very unlucky day; we were in a hurry to meet up with someone and Raul got a flat tire – twice! Bad luck seems to come in package…we haven’t had a single problem with bikes for over 5 months and now three punctures in less than a week! All happened to the same wheel and the last two ones without obvious reason. Faulty inner tube? We hope so, we changed it for a new one and see how it goes in a couple of days…

Now we are on the car, still a day and a half driving ahead; yellow landscape of California’s desert passing behind the widow; temperatures around 20’s C (60’s F), so difficult to imagine that Christmas are in a month time; we are stuck here in summer, for the last 5 months; summer is good, is definitely good for cycling, but it is also good when it ends…

Raul’s the driver, so I can do some catching up on our blog. We’ve done over 2000 m in the last two weeks in order to visit the greatest, the lowest, the hottest and the craziest places in western US – Yosemite NP, Death Valley, Las Vegas and Grand Canyon. It’s been very intense trip – from mountains to desert, from over 2000 m a.s.l. to nearly 100 m u.s.l. (I had my ears all the time blockedJ), from the greatest trees to places where there was no living being, from soundless desert to probably the noisiest city in US. It was intense, it was crazy, but it was worth it. I think we did the best of our time; we spent 2 full days in each park and enjoy it as much as we could; however, there are places we’d like to visit again…

Surely many will ask why by car, if we are on bike tour? Ok. So I’ll explain; we want to continue cycling along Pacific Coast and cross the Mexican border in California Baja (Baja is apparently safer and beautiful and less touristy), but we also wanted to see those Parks, who knows if we ever be back in this part of the world… it’s November and we were already out of season, struggling with sub-zero temperatures at night, short days and cool evenings; if we cycled, places like Yosemite or Grand Canyon would be deeply buried under snow, our gears are not ready for this, and we would have to cycle back to the Pacific –it would take us 2-3 months, we are not welcome for so long in US. So, excused? ;)

Ukiah

a small town north of San Francisco where weird things happen....time elapsed, space froze and not knowing when and how we are still here in the same spot nearly 3 weeks after we first arrived here. But things are back to normal, the Sun travels its usual route on the sky, people are walking, card are riding, Halloween decoration are being replaced by Christmas ones, Planet seems to keep spinning, and we are moving on...however we'll be back again to Ukiah! We are going on a side-trip to see the great parks: Yosemite, Death Valley and Grand Canyon, by car... I know, some people felt a bit disappointed that us-cyclist go by car... but we never felt that we have to cycle everywhere on this trip, this journey is more about travelling rather than cycling and in the circumstances we have (late in the season -snow in Yosemite and we want to keep cycling along the coast) car is more convenient for us to make a loop trip of over 2000 miles...but we'll be back and pick our bikes from exactly where we left them and start cycling from where we stopped!
another weird thing about Ukiah was two totally unexpected meetings within one day!
First an e-mail from Alex, a great person and cyclist who hosted us in Nelson, BC and who coincidentally, at that time in Nelson, was about to start pretty much the same cycling trip as we are on ; and so we were in touch and trying to catch up somewhere on the way, and there is she! Stuck in Ukiah as well for the last 2 weeks :)

And then totally unexpected visit from 'the old world', a friend from Edinburgh, who happened to be in SF. Daniel was the first person from ''far-away' who visited us here; it was super short visit, but it was so great to meet him! However, he left us a bit melancholic, missing you all there even more...

And so it happened!

On a sunny day of the 12th of October 2011, in a beautiful victorian town of Eureka, 8km before our speedometers shown 7000km we had the first flat tire! Raul's rear wheel was the first one to fail...

That was a big nasty nail that pinched the wheel and ripped the inner tube so badly that it might not be fixable...something we need to check; that day we just put new inner tube to save some time.

We were lucky that it happened next to a car repair place , so we had all tools handy :)

No website, but still looking....

Unfortunately, despite our efforts, it looks as if we won't have our tri-lingual website, at least not very soon..:( we tried for over a year, we tried to get different people involved, but it never worked out. We can't afford paying to have the website done, we are looking for a sponsorship or some king of co-operation...we will still keep looking.
But as for now the blog, as it looks now, is the most we can offer. That's all we can do with the tools, knowledge and little time we had. So we at least try to write some stories in our own languages, the rest will be in English. However, if there is something you would like to have translated to Polish or Spanish, we can do it.

Niestety musimy oficjalnie wyznać, że wygląda na to, że - przynajmniej na razie - nie będziemy mieli naszej strony internetowej w trzech językach...:( chociaż materiały są gotowe, nie udało znaleźć się nam nikogo (a próbowaliśmy przez ponad rok - były obietnice, spełzły na niczym...) kto stworzyłby tę stronę dla nas; nasz budżet jest ograniczony, dlatego jedyne, co możemy zaoferować to sponsoring lub inna forma współpracy; ciągle szukamy...
Blog, tak jak w tej chwili wygląda, to maksimum jakie możemy zaoferować - narzędia są ograniczone, nasza wiedza niewielka, a czas wieczorami na kempingu krótki...
wiekszość informacji będzie w języku angielskim (jeslit tłumacz google sobie nie radzi, chętnie przetłumaczę), jedynie co jakiś czas napisze coś po polsku w dzienniku. I tyle, na razie!

Desafortunadamente apesar de todos los esfuerzos, parece ser que no vamos a tener la web en tres idiomas, almenos no por el momento...(hemos estado intentandolo desde hace mas de 14 meses, lo hemos intentado con diferente gente que ofrecio ayudarnos pero nunca se ha llegado a realizar) No podemos permitirnos el pagar a un disenador de webs, estamos buscando por un patrocinador o alguna forma de colaboracion...seguimos buscando.
Por el momento el blog sigue siendo lo mejor que podemos ofrecer, con las herramientas que tenemos, el limitado tiempo y acceso a internet del que disponemos mientras viajamosy es por esta razon por lo que almenos intentaremos escribir algunos de los articulos en nuestras lenguas madre y el resto en Ingles. Detodas maneras si hay algun articulo de los que solo estan en Ingles que quieres que lo traduzcamos al Polaco o al Espanol haznolo saber he intentaremos hacerlo para que puedas leerlo.

making our lives easier :)

so we upgraded our bikes a little bit - we now proudly carry flags of our countries and with info about our project; you can't probably imagine how many times a day we are asked: where are you heading to? o! where did you start? o!! how long have you been o the road? hmmm.... where are you from? spain and...? a! etc.

hope this will answer at least some of the questions....

and small luxury for Marta:) now she can drink her coffee and 'drive', that what people do here in US...

Vancouver

We spent in Vancouver 10 days, a bit more than we thought we would, but we had great time there and we met great people. It was the first big city after we left New York nearly four months ago. Did we miss big cities? I think we did, surly some aspects of them; the first thing we did, after arriving to Van, was to go for lunch. But not just anywhere – we went to an Ethiopian restaurant; up until then the only ‘exotic’ food we came across was Chinese…

We wanted to stay longer in Vancouver, because there was few things we had to get done and only big city offers this services; first of all catch up a little bit with blogging (hope you can appreciate this; for those who haven’t checked it yet go to ‘route’ – Marta spent the whole day mapping our trip!), fix/buy/exchange some equipment (unfortunately one zip in our tent stopped working, but luckily we found a tiny repair shop run by an afghan guy who replaced the zip for $20, so we didn’t have to go through the whole reclamation process, that would be pretty complicated for us; apart from that we had to exchange the sleeping mat that was faulty and to get some more bits and bobs) and last, but not the least check our bikes. By the time we arrived to Van, we had over 5000 km on our speedometers – high time to do a check-up. We made small research and found out that there is in Van a community bike shop, as they call here places like The Bike Station; and so we visited one that works pretty much like TBS (we hope to write a bit more about this place and any other alike we come across soon). The things we were concerned the most were our wheels – if they are nit well centered they can get damaged quicker and after that many kilometers the spokes could easily lost tension. And so we were content to find out that they need just little adjustment – well done ‘bikeys’! (and those ones who built the wheels!)

We obviously did some sightseeing as well and we truly like Vancouver. It has just the right size (excluding metro), right location, not bad climate at all and great vibes. There are lots of green areas, plenty of beaches, ski resort 2-hour drive of town and plenty of nooks to discover. Our favourite place was Granville Island (thanks Justyna!), a tiny peninsula just outside of Vancouver Downtown, where there is always something to do – market with local food, arts&crafts, live music, small shops and galleries, we could wander there around for hours…Vancouver (and area) are definitely on our bucket list; maybe was the people, good weather, great time we had there, amazing food, but definitely Vancouver make a great impression on us. But this is most of all thanks to the people and their hospitality.

Justyna, Michael and little Lily, thank you guys so much! It was so good to meet you and to connect! If we ever did a list of most hospitable people, they’d be the leaders with little Lily on the top, as she let us sleep in her bed and in her room for all 10 days! But there was more than just warm welcome, we connect, had fun, we made friends and we hope to see them again.

And, thanks to Justyna, we discovered raw food. And Raul was so happy! J I’ll write about it soon an share some recipes for those who dare to try.Hhowever, the principal of raw diet is eating food raw, which means no cooking, roasting, baking etc., no high temperatures as this is what kills enzymes and all good stuff food naturally contains. The only process you can use is dehydrating. So we made our attempt to prepare dehydrated cookies; well, they were edible J still lots to learn…We tried some amazing food prepared by Justyna and we left their place with three big bags of dried fruit. We cannot wait to experiment more with it once our adventure is finished!

Victoria

We spent in Victoria just one day, but we like it a lot. We had only time to stroll around downtown, get lost in their little Chinatown, have our ‘good-bye-Canada-and-well-done-guys!-Canada-completed!’ dinner (that we were again invited by some Angels, Thank you very much!) and in the evening go for a walk along promenade in Victoria’s little port and listening to great live music there.

It was also our last day in Canada and we felt a bit sentimental; over those three months we got to like Canada, or shell I say BC and a bit of Yukon? We haven’t even seen half of this country, but what we saw we liked a lot and what we experienced was only positive.

Southern BC - smells grass and tastes peaches...

After Rockies we didn’t head straight to Vancouver as we thought we’ll do, but - driven by stories about exceptional beauty of valleys, uniqueness of towns, warm lakes and sunny weather and best fruit and veggie farming in BC – we just couldn’t resist and were looping around The Kootenays and Okanagan Valley for over a month. We probably did an extra 1000 km, but it was worth it.

Kootaneys was our destination for two reasons – hot springs and Nelson. BC is famous for hot springs in general, but Kootaneys is definitely the ‘hot spot’. Just within maybe 30 km around a small town called Nakusp one could probably spend a week soaking each day in different pool. There is a book called 'Hot Springs of Western Canada' by Woodsworths; it describes all developed, undeveloped and supposed-to-exist thermal springs in BC and north-west US, with all details about pools and directions how to get there. We had an opportunity to have a look at it and some of the undeveloped ones are in very amazing spots; unfortunately they are normally not easily accessible (some only by plane or boat!) and there wasn’t any on our way worth the effort of half day hike or cycling 30 km uphill; so we visited two developed ones, which we enjoyed a lot. First, Canyon Hot Springs were in the right spot; just after Rogers Pass, the last big climb of Rockies and so our joints and muscle were so grateful for this bath. The others – Ainsworth Hot Springs are interesting for its couriosity – a cave. They were first discovered by miners and greatly appreciated after a day of hard work. To help the water flow the miners dig a U-shape cave. Nowadays there is a big resort around but they kept the original cave. The thermal water is full of calcium, so evaporating it leaves sediment on the walls, which creates this amazing shapes; walking throught that caves feels like being in mother’s earth intestine.

There is not a single big city in west Kootane and that’s what’s so great about this place. All towns are small and cute, all of them by the lake, surrounded by mountains, with their little coffee shops, boutiques, art galleries, farmers market, all stocking and promoting local products. And each of them has different story to say – whether it is a history of silver mining, old railway crossing, or some nature treasures or curiosities. But there is one that we heard about miles before - Nelson. Place that for some reasons attracts all kinds of weirdoes (in the most positive meaning this word can have!) and thanks to them, I believe, has this unique friendly and open atmosphere. It is a place from ’60, hippie place, some say (easy to agree with it at first glance – never seen so many guys with long hair and dreadlocks in one town!:). Place, where you can meet the whole bunch of people with interesting professions, hobbies and stories to tell. Town, with so much life on the streets, where people have time to slow down, sit in one of many coffee shops and just enjoy conversation, go to a park and play guitar or just wander around; interesting place…

On the way to Okanagan we passed through ‘hay country’, Slocan Valley, where the smell of freshly cut grass and the sound of watering machines followed us all the time; and as we cycled the grass fields has been gradually replaced with orchards – we hit Okanagan, the tropics of Canada. This valley is apparently the northernmost tip of a dessert stretching between two mountain ranges - The Rockies and Cascades – all the way down to Mexico. And has just the right climate for fruit and vine plantations. We happened to be there just on time for cherries and peaches season as well as any sorts of veggies, we had lots of them! Places like that are obviously great for seasonal jobs, we heard about opportunities for making good money there, we even considered getting some jobs ourselves, but haven’t really try hard to get one. Well, the job found us….

That’s our story on a ‘China Farm’

We were offered a job on an organic veggie farm – help with weeding. We heard before that weeding is the worst of all seasonal jobs you can get there, but we thought ‘nothing can be that bad that you cannot do it for a week’. We were told that they are ‘demanding, but good people’ on this farm and we thought ‘we can work hard, we will do our best’. What we didn’t know was that they were Chinese! (Please anybody, don’t feel offended, we have nothing against any nations, it was just such a stereotypical experience) The weeds were huge, some like a meter tall and there was plenty of them, sometimes you couldn’t see what is supposed to grow there (that is all about organic apparently…) and so we worked hard – those who know us imagine us getting up at 5:45am, just to be on the field at 7am, working for 10 hours under Okanagan sun with temperatures reaching 35C, with just 2 hours brake in the middle of the day, squatting or kneeing all the time. Apparently it wasn’t enough – Chinese people in the age between 20 and 80 were on the field at 6am working without a single break (not exaggerating!) for drink, pee or stretch until 1pm, took break for lunch (hopefully some water and pee as well) and were back to work at 3pm (or earlier) to work for another 5 hours. And like that 7 days a week. And so not surprisingly everybody was tired, overwhelmed by job that needs to be done, not in a mood for friendly conversations ‘halloes’ and ‘how-are-yous’.

We stayed there 6 days, made the money we wanted and were gone as quick as we could. We are happy we did it, that was good experience, but, to us, it not the right way…

The day we left the farm we were invited for a BBQ by other seasonal workers. That was their leaving party, it took part in the back yard at their bosses’; we barbequed veggies they used to pick, the bosses happened to have a jam session with their friends the same evening; so there was good local food, local wine, life music and all those people laughing, joking and enjoying the evening together…

We are now in Portland, Oregon, US; BC seems distant already... we had some good time in Vancouver and met great people, cycled through rain forest in Washington (had some rainy days, but not very many luckily) and now having few days off in Portland and getting to know this apparently 'best for cycling city in US'. With our mouths wide open

Although, I'm not a fun of labeling everything down We have to admit that is a human tendency choosing what is the best, the most famous. The road that goes from Jasper National Park to Banff National Park trough the Rockies is considered the 3rd most scenic road in the World, Highway 93.
For Marta and me to cycle across the Rockies has been a causality. While we are on the road traveling, We have this healthy idea of asking local and travelers for tips, places ... And the Rockies was one of those places that more and more people were suggesting us to do it the closer We got to Alberta. Before We crossed those Mountains the only images I had of Rockies were the one from some of the Western movies made up here. If those images are breath taking on the TV You can not imagine how much better are when you are there cycling as We were It is indescribable right from the beginning when We crossed the Park gates and this carpet of flowers covering all began, streams of water everywhere, turquoise lakes and overall those mountains, They are one of the most beautiful rock formations I saw in my entirely life. If there is a God, in this place he made one of his best jobs. It is fascinating how the forest, the light, the glaciers dressed up those rocks formations in such an unique way.
I had this feeling few times when I was staring at them that perhaps that is how the Planet used to look like years ago. Maybe there is not just one Eden Garden if not at least one for each climate and definitely the Rockies is one of the Gardens for the North Climate.
For us it has been also the place where We have seen, touched and walked on a Glacier for the firs time in our life, those vast, enormous, ancient ice being has been there for thousands of years taking care of the water equilibrium in the Planet, being around them has made us a bit more conscious of their role keeping an environment where humans can live. It is very interesting how they has passed from just being a massive peace of ice to be more familiar and respectful the way you look at them at least certainly the way I look now at them.
Something very interesting that is happening in this National Park and I believe in many other Parks where the animals are protected against human hunting is that the Wild animals have understood that We are not a threaten any longer so many of those animals are quite comfortable having us, humans around, the image of an Elk or a Deer eating totally in peace, not bothered at all of having this bunch of tourist taking endless pictures of them while they are feeding their selves with fresh grass.
And the last but not the least of the magic moments We had over there was at least very much for me to spend the day of my birthday in one of the glacier and turquoise lakes, something I won't forget ever this lunch by the lake with our feet in the water so much beauty, so much surrounding everything
Those are this kind of moments were I feel deeply thankful of being alive

Alaska Highway

Episode 1- The Alcan

Alaska Highway – for us just the beginning of our adventure, for many an adventure itself. There is something special, kind of mythical about this road, the history, the wilderness, space and emptiness – something people from the south miss, so they come here for adventure, they come to encounter ‘the Nature’, as they say here is ‘the last frontier’, the last real unspoiled beauty of Northern America.

The road was built in 1942 for military purposes and at that time that was the only road to Alaska. However, white people had been visiting this forgotten place long before – first fur trades from Russia, then gold seekers and then army – it was either trekking, by sea or air. No-one thought Alaska could be habitable, pleasant or interesting place to visit. The war turmoil however, made wide public realize about an existence of this piece of land and so just after the WWII had finished adventure seekers started hitting the road north. There was virtually anything at that time; few small communities, few petrol stations, where you could also buy some food, and the road was hardly drivable in all four seasons (even today there are still long stretches where permafrost and wetlands damage the road nearly every year). So even for a car it was a big challenge. Nowadays is different – there is plenty of services along the road; for a car it is an easy drive, for a bike the distances are still significant. The road is very touristy – between June and August, when all the services are operating, the road is full of RV’s, motorbikes, 4x4 and delivery trucks. The ride is easy; you can sleep in bed and eat in a restaurant every day, spot a bear and take a picture and look at the immensity of Nature; the beauty of northern lands is simple, it is not something that makes you to say ‘wooooooooow’ the minute you see it; you need to get engaged with it, be there for some time and feel it. There is just forest, but the forest is endless and so dense that you can barely go inside (if you dare to encounter its wildlife), there are just rivers, but so ‘free’, ‘untamed’, like none of the one in our civilized, organized part of the planet and there are those distant mountains. I thing only cycling the Alcan you can still feel the wilderness and get the sense of adventure the first travelers came for.

Alaska Highway

Episode 2 – The Last Frontier

The Alcan is still the only road that connects, links the last frontier, the wildness, the far North with the "conquest" lands.

I someone like us who comes from the safe and comfortable Europe to see, to experience the way that Nature sets the rules so strongly to those few o that were brave enough to settle down around the Alcan. The way they cope with the almost endless Winters and Wildlife around them it is inspiring. In some conversations we had with locals it came up the idea, the feeling of being small, fragile against the Nature and how they have to learn how to survive in the Woods. Yes in the Woods that is where most of them live fully surrounded by an endless forest that covers everything that your eyes can reach to see. I have never seen something like that before I came to the North. The idea of being in one of the biggest "lungs" of the Planet Earth is unique and also a bit frightening for someone like us that we are not used to with the Nature face to face.

The image that comes to my mind is the 4 Elements, when I try to describe the Alcan

WATER

The biggest rivers I have ever seen in my life not even in my dreams, they are not just massive but wild, uncontrolled, you can really see that the water goes wherever it wants and there is no way for humans to "tamed" those rivers, when you get closer to any of those rivers and you see as we did the strength, the power of the current, the white water "roaring" dragging any tree does not matter how big it would be that attempt to grow too close their water.

It comes to my mind this place where we stopped to have some lunch and we found that river pass with a piece of land in the middle of the river and how the water was "eating" everything that was on its way, huge trees lying on the water, trapped between rapids. Waiting to be released from one rapid to the next. The strong feeling of fear while holding ourselves against a rock where we were standing, thinking if I fall down into the river that is it! No way I can survive and this feeling made me to understand a bit more the connection with Nature around me.

EARTH

The forest and the animals they live on it, it is already two months we have already been here and it still surprise me all the time the idea of being surrounded by Wildlife ,some of the animals could be fatal if We have a bad encounter with them. For the first time in my life I had and still I do the feeling of fear when I'm walking in the Woods, when I'm looking for a place to camp, and it is something totally new for us, back home when I have been camping in the back country there is nothing can be dangerous but be cold or wet at night nothing else.

Having bicycle as a transport makes you tune in very much with the natural speed of the forest and makes you able to see every single meter of it and we have learnt from that a lot, our fear has reduced and our knowledge and respect for it has grown. The first time you see a bear by the road you flip out. We did not know what to do, everything we read about how to deal with a bear was gone, but bear by bear you learn what signs you need to look for. Do they have caps with them, if so where are they next to the mother bear or far away? You really don't want to be between them or you can be in serious troubles. With some other animals we has just to try to cope I am talking about mosquitoes and for someone who has not been in Alaska or North of Canada you do not know what a mosquito look like over here. They are huge!!! They are millions!!! And they love blood!!! It doesn't matter what you try to avoid them, what stuff you put on you they are waiting with patience until the mosquito repellent stop working or a bit of your skin is uncovered between the layers of your cloth or this tinny hole you have forgotten to zip up in the tent. They have made us crazzy!!!

I was born and grew up in a very dry place where we don't have hardly any forest, and to see how the Planet may looked like in the past before we cut down most of the forest, it has been something very magic. The gloom of life, the vast variety of plants and trees covering it everything it is the opposite of those small patches of green that you get in parks, along the street dividing the traffic lines, they look like islands on a Ocean of concrete that is unfortunately the way it looks back home. For us go to the countryside is very much mountains covered with few pines, olive trees and some lucky places they still have some bits of old forest, the rest is just Mediterranean bush. After what I saw here my idea of what a forest is has changed radically.

FIRE

The next element is Fire, keep us close to the forest e over here fire is very much a way that the Nature controls the growth of the forest to keep it young and healthy. It was so surprising that in Summer huge, vast areas of forest are burnt out every year cause by lightning storms and how the local authorities wisely let the Nature to do its job, just intervening in the case that the fire could be a risk for the communities nearby. The fire for some pine species is the way of reproduce and also the way that many of the poor soils over here can be enriched again with nutrients to keep it fertile.

AIR

The last element and perhaps the most important while cycling is the Wind and the Alcan has been wild with that I don't know if normally is as windy as it has been for us, but most of the time we have cycled with head winds, specially up in the mountains or through Valleys or close to Glaciers, sometimes with winds up to 45-50 km. Perhaps the most windy day was at the Kluane Lake, due to the huge glacier that made this lake long ago there is a permanent wind blowing from the East-South to the North -East and that was our way, frustrating, tiring, all those miles uphill. It was a real test for us a reminder of how small we are and how influence by the Outside so the nightmare turned into an excellent, vital lesson as a cyclist.

Alaska Highway

Episode 3 – Cycling Alcan, our experience and few useful (in our opinion :)) tips

Road

The historical Alcan is over 1422 miles long (we tried to find out how long it is nowadays, but we think no-one knows as they are upgrading and straightening it every year and so it is difficult to keep record of the actual length) and its conditions varies significantly along the whole stretch. There is wide enough to cycle shoulder for most of its length and in terms of traffic, although there are mostly big cars (trucks and RV’s), they will normally give a cyclist plenty of room. In our opinion the worst bits are:

From port Alcan to Burwash Landing (less than 200km); the road condition there is very bad; it is mostly gravel and if paved full of cracks, holes and bumps.
Liard Hot Springs to Fort Saint John; lots of hills of any kind; there are three big passes before Fort Nelson (Summit Pass, Sikhanni Pass and another one by Steamboat) ant then the last 100ish km before Fort Saint John is a rollercoaster – up and down and not a single flat stretch.
Along Kluane Lake (about 50km); the strongest head wind we came across so far; this stretch is known for its wind, blowing normally from the south-east (so if you come from the North as us, you will have to go against wind); it is a glacier wing, so in sunny days expect it to be stronger.

Food

If you are planning on cooking your own food you must be prepared to carry supplies for stretches up to 500km. Alcan runs through very deserted areas, there is few towns, where you can find bigger supermarkets (small shops in small communities are super pricey). However, it is touristy route, so there are lodges and various kinds of road bars and restaurants, but mostly they have menu limited to burgers and sandwiches. So if you are vegetarian, you might have to stick to veggie burgers and fries. There was one exceptional place that’s worth mentioning; it was in the very last Canadian community called Beaver Creek, far away from everywhere (and certainly from a good source of fresh food) and yet they serve fresh and freshly made food. We didn’t eat out much, but definitely it was the only place along Alcan, where we had a good meal. Be also prepared that some of those places can be shut down (even though the guidebook says it’s open) and the opposite – we came across services in the middle of nowhere that weren’t mentioned in any of the guidebooks we had (they don’t seem to update them annually).

We found northern Canada expensive and there is not much you can do about it. Moreover we try to eat healthy (fresh, organic, good quality food) and we eat a lot! Food is our fuel, so saving on food is really hard. In one of the groceries we were asked if we want saving card and it actually turned up to be a good idea. The one we have works in few shops in western Canada (south from Fort Saint John you can pretty much find one of them in any town) and the savings are not bad at all. In term of shopping in small places, if there is a shop in small community or in petrol station, don’t expect to find there much more than some sweets, chips, soda drinks and maybe sometimes hugely overpriced cheese and bread.

Water is generally clean up north and some people don’t even filter it. We do filter however, and if you are planning on doing so, there is plenty of creeks, river and lakes along the road. Occasionally we came across stretches of 40-60km of ‘desert’, so just always make sure that you have enough water for the next 2-4 hours.

Camping

There is option between private and provincial/state campgrounds. The private ones are obviously more expensive, but also have luxuries such as warm showers and Wi-Fi (be prepared that sometimes they will charge you extra for having shower or making fire!). Provincial ones are basic – there are toilets (but no running water), access to water, firewood (for free only in Yukon) and kitchen shelter – but cheaper. As for summer 2011 the prices were: $10-15 in Alaska, $14 in Yukon, $16 in BC and $16-23 in Alberta. If you plan your trip a few days ahead you can easily sleep every night at a campground.

But if you prefer wilderness, free camp is allowed everywhere along Alcan. You obviously have to be aware of wildlife and follow a few simple rules, which were totally new and strange for us, people coming from Europe, where humans have no natural predators. I think it is useful to read at least a little bit about bears, to understand them more and then is easier to know what to do. If you go up north you will find plenty of information about safe camping in bear country, so there is no point to repeat it here, but just to give some idea, the basic rules are:

Camp in open space (so if a bear is approaching your tent, you can see it in advance);
Avoid places, where you see sighs of bear presence or places, where bears can come for food (berries patches, rivers);
Don’t cook close to your tent and if possible, cook something that is not very aromatic (cooking curry is probablyy not the best idea);
Store food and all smelly stuff (like toiletries and including the clothes you have on when cooking ) away from tent (min.100m), preferably hanged somewhere high (min.5m up);
Learn about bears’ habits, so you will know how to avoid an encounter and what to do if you see one;

In our experience it is not always that easy to find an open space (there is forest everywhere), cooking away from tent means you cannot hide from mosquitoes-beasts and trees are small with tiny branches, so hanging food is a challenge. Not quite a relaxing camping evening you would like to have after the whole day cycling…However, to actually have an encounter with a bear is something very unusual and there are other animals that are worse and more common – squirrels! They are real plague; they are everywhere and have no fears of humans; they’ve been stealing food from our plates and made a hand-size hole in one of our panniers!

Bike maintenance

There are very little towns along the Alcan and even less bike shops; we didn’t have to look for one, but I’d say there is probably just two - in Whitehorse and Fort Saint John. So you should probably pack more spare parts than you would take in more civilized place. It is difficult to say what to take as you cannot know what can get broken – unless you know the weak points of your bike; so you need to make reasonable compromise between the weight and the stuff you might need.

The other thing is the grease; we took the finish line ‘wet’, which turn to be not the best choice. The North is very dry and at the same time very dusty and so all this dirt and dust was sticking to this grease; the result was that we had to be cleaning chains more often that we normally would. So we suggest using the ‘dry’ grease, which doesn’t catch the dirt that easily.

The last thing is about tires; if you planning on staying on Alcan only the touring tires are fine (you will manage this few gravel bits with them), but if you are thinking about going off the main highway, you’d better take mountain biking tires, as those roads are mostly gravel.

Episode 4 – Hosting Communities

Recently we have joined two of the travel hosting communities, Couchsurfing and Warmshower. What are they? How do they work? What is the idea behind them?

The idea the spirit behind them is to built a community a net where the traveler and the host has an opportunity to share experiences, where the mass tourisms is bitten by a closer, warmer approach between the travelers and the locals. There is a big sense of trustfulness on human kindness overall.

Those communities work over the internet, once you has joined in you have access to look for people along the places you are planning to go, then you have a list of people in those places with theirs profiles so you can read them and contact the people you think have the most in common with you then you can contact them regarding to host you. It is totally up to the host if they want or not to host you and how long and that is arranger on the internet or over the phone.

Our experience as new members is not very big but so far We have to say that is being amazing, it has totally blown our head away all those people who has opened their houses totally to us, sharing their time, food and life with us, with two strangers, and how We have felt with some of them part of their families for a while. It's amazing to arrive to a new place and have a place to stay and people to host you, to share with you and vice versa, definitely is a two ways experience which enriches both parts a lot host and traveler giving and receiving. Many of those experiences We had come to my mind I've remembered very warmly those two days We've spent with Tony and Sara, after 16 km of tough uphill looking for their place which was farther and tougher than Tony described to us on the last email, We were a bit disappointed but when we arrived to their place all this silly feelings were wiped off by these wonderful people who for a couple of days adopt us as part of their family feeding us with great food, taking care of us, fantastic conversations, sharing experiences by the bonfire or those pancakes Tony prepared for breakfast for all the family(us too) and we had the by the terrace enjoining the morning while chatting, laughing. Experiences like that makes the traveling a unique experience, to us the best you can get out of traveling is to meet all those people.

Or this other one We got to a big town and there was this lovely girl waiting for us to host us for a night at hers and surprisingly after We had a cup of tea with told us I "I' m going to my boyfriend's tonight so you can enjoy the house for yourselves, sleep on my bed better than in the couch so you will get a proper rest and she left us in her place with all her stuff, trusting totally a 2 strangers, waooooo!!!! That is what comes to my head.

These people are opening, widening our way of seeing other people, making us in a way better person than we already were. I have been all those years traveling and avoiding going to hotels or even hostels that are so far from the communities and people who live around them When I have been spending a night or so in one of those "spaces „I felt always as a tourist, having tourist conversations and ending gathering just with other tourists, sometimes it was fun though, but not even getting a small sense of the place you are visiting or traveling through or the people who live there.

Episode 5 - Mosquitoes

People joke in Canada that their national bird is a mosquito; not super funny, I know, but true. Mosquitoes of the North (Canadian and the one from Alaska) are world famous.

Before this trip my understanding of mosquitoes habits was that they live in warm places, near stagnant water, bite in the evenings and not necessarily like me (I’m one of those lucky ones whose company, but not them, gets bitten). Well, the mosquitoes here are total exception from that rules. First of all there are at least twice bigger than the one in Europe (they say everything is bigger overseas…), you can find them by the sea and as high as 2000 m a.s.l.; they will bite whether it is 2C or 32C, whether it is early morning, midday, afternoon or in the middle of the night! And they are super aggressive; apparently they can drink over 0.5 l of blood from a moose a day! Poor moose sometimes gets mad and runs where is too cold for it and die.

However, we were lucky not to meet the worst ones. First mosquitoes appear in Alaska in mid May and last until August. And as their reproduce they are gaining better survival skills; each generation grows bigger and more aggressive, so if the first ones take some time flying around you before biting, the later generations just bites. Apparently tourists can barely stay outside by the end of August.

Though they can be vampires, they are not bad everywhere. We’ve been camping all the time and in some places, against all odds (damp and warm) there where hardly any mosquitoes and in others we had to be moving literally all the time to not to bet bitten. However, we both agree that our worst mosquito experience was not when camping, but when cycling; sometimes when we go up a steep hill we are so slow that these little beasts can actually catch up with us and be biting us! So imagine – warm day, us tired, going uphill, trying hard to pedal and breathe to keep the rhythm, eagerly looking at the top of this f… hill and suddenly feeling something itchy here and there, and there, and there...aaaaaaaaaaaa! And there is really no solution – it is too hot to put more clothes on and any repellent we will just sweat out in half an hour.

If it comes to dealing with mosquitoes on a regular basis, human’s creativity goes beyond expectations; or actually I should say tourist, because locals somehow get used to them. In supermarkets you can find the whole section with anti-mosquitoes stuff; repellents, nets (starting from just a head cover and finishing on whole body suit), ‘smelly-smoky’ stuff (apparently coils work the best), there is even an anti-mosquito application for smart-phones! Some people told us also that some type of washing powder rubbed into skin works well…they might’ve tried to trick us though…However, everybody says that, at the end of the day, DEET is the only thing that really works. So how are we dealing with mosquitoes? We have, let’s call it, our anti-mosquitoes outfit, which is long trousers, long-sleeve top and buff to cover head and neck (they will bite through hair and some don’t even have hair…) and sometimes this is enough; but if they are very bad we spray clothes with DEET and use some herbal repellent for face and hands (DEET is apparently cancerous, so it shouldn’t be used directly on the skin and it can melt synthetic fabrics, so cotton clothes are best for it). Nothing creative, but old tested method.

On the early evening of a rainy and cold day of July the 10th we reached Dawson Creek - the historic 'Mile 0' of the Alcan! We have done over 2500km on this one of a kind road that winds through the forests, mountains and along the rivers and valleys of Alaska, Yukon and BC.

It's been very intense experience for us, especially that it was our first 2500km on the road; we know that we haven't been very good at sharing it on the blog (we can blame the wilderness and no access to anything:)), but we promise to make up for it!

So, that's us at the beginning of Alaska Highway (which for us was the end)

On the historic day of July the 10th we were invited for a dinner to celebrate this special moment. So we found the best restaurant in town, called White Spot, that apparently has been running since 1928, and enjoy ourselves as much as we could :)

Marta had Salmon rice bowl, which was grilled salmon with Shitake mashroom, red pepper and ginger sauce; raul ate his best-ever-tried veggie burger (wholemeal roll, roasted mushroom, fresh tomato and lettuce and this huge tofu burger) with home-made chips and we shared a huge plate of salad. Marta toasted with a local lager and raul traditionally with a cup of green tea:)Mmmmm, what a change after eating rice and cheese all the time....

hi everyone,

so the Alaska Highway is nearly finished; we are just 70km away from taking this historical picture at the other end of famous Alcan; if it stops raining (it's been pouring down the whole day today) we will get there by tomorrow evening.

I must say we feel a bit sentimental about this fact, we got used to Alcan, we got to like it, there is something special about this road - the history, the wilderness, its uniqueness, we will miss it...

And the wilderness is gone as well; there are flushable toilets on the rest areas, our mobiles have started to work, the Internet is fast...

People travel the Alaska Highway to go to the wild, to reach the "last frontier", to feel the shiver running down their spine, when their realize the immensity of the nature;

so, when you meet someone on the road one of the first questions is: how much wildlife have you seen? well, we have some trophies to show off :)

Black Bear, seen 14; most of the one we have seen just lazily chew on dandelions

Moose, aparently in plantiful up north; well, we've seen only 4

funny squirrel-like animal that was compulsively eating dandelion seeds

These are little monster; a real threat to our food!

Bald Eagle

Clumsy reindeer (here called caribou); no worries, by Christmas it'll be ready to deliver all your presents:)

Hi folks,

We are already in BC with not many Km ahead to finish the Alaska Highway more than 40 days on the road, tough work but everything is worth it when you can see and enjoy places like that. It is called the Liard Hot Springs. When you arrive in a place like that to put into word what you see and what you feel is difficult for someone that is not a good writer, the closest we can do it is with those images.The water drips from a white rock reaching temperatures higher than 50C and getting cooler on its way down when it meets a small cold stream. You need just to swim up or down until you gain what is the right temperature for you in this paradise.

When the evening arrived the rain and the cold wind came. That was the greatest of the moments, hardly anyone around us, thunders, pouring down, all this steam coming from the pool creating fog that was covering the pool and the forest around making the place like any of those describes on the Lord of the Rings.
