<itunes:summary>Here's podcast 80: ANDREW RAFFO DEWAR Indeterminacies, starring Andrew, BRADY SHARP, PULSE NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE, and moderator RODGER COLEMAN.
Indeterminacies is a series of performances organized by Zeitgeist Gallery's Lesley Beeman and Lain York. It's based on John Cage's idea about creating processes with no predetermined outcome, welcoming the unexpected and learning from the accidental.

Tonight's Indeterminacies was recorded on October 12th, 2011 and features Andrew Raffo Dewar, composer, improviser, woodwind instrumentalist, ethnomusicologist, and Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Arts in New College and the School of Music at the University of Alabama.
If you like the show, tell a friend or write us a review in iTunes. Indeterminacies is coming back on Thursday, March 1st with Nashville Symphony Chairman Alan Valentine. More details on the Facebook event page. I hope to see you there!</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Theatre Intangible was asked to host two circuit bending panels at last October's Geek Media Expo, Nashville's premier multi-fandom convention. In the first panel, Circuit Bending 101, we broke open some toys and showed people how to make simple bends. In Circuit Bending 201, we performed. Podcast 79 is that performance.
The GMX11 performance features BRIDGET VENUTI (Aether Jag), JOSH GUMIELA (Foster Dad), PIMPDADDYSUPREME, and maker-extraordinaire PATRICK BECKER.
GMX hosted the panels in multiple rooms at a local hotel and convention center. Panelists were given just 10 minutes to prepare the room after the previous panelists left. I'm not sure what the creative writing panel thought of the weirdos in the hallway armed with abused toys and wirey contraptions. (Come to think of it, they probably weren't fazed. One word: Steampunk!) As we were setting up the equipment, the room started to fill with eager faces. By the time we started playing, we had amassed quite a crowd! As a gun-shy member of the Nashville experimental community, where a crowd of five is a good night, I wasn't expecting this. As it turns out, the convention-goers really seemed to enjoy learning about circuit-bending. This was counter to my only other experience of doing Theatre Intangible live at a convention: Podcamp 2010.  (See Podcast 12: Live at Podcamp Nashville.) At that Barcamp-style conference about social media, search engine optimization, and pretty much anything BUT podcasting, we drew a crowd of two. I believe the reactions were so different because GMX is at its heart a convention about creativity. Podcamp is at its heart a convention about technology. As much as I love technology, I'll take the creative people any day of the week.
All in all, Geek Media Expo 2011 was an absolute blast, and I would be honored to participate next year.
What's circuit bending? Find out here.</itunes:summary>

This is the first podcast I mastered and edited in a program other than Soundtrack Pro. I finally put to rest my senile Mac G5 and replaced it with a Xubuntu Linux machine. I really wanted to use open source audio editing software.

Unfortunately, nothing in the open source world holds a candle to Soundtrack Pro (not even Ardour, at least for waveform editing). And Alsa was an absolute beast to configure properly. So after a month of pulling my hair out and putting off the next podcast release, I broke down and installed Windows 7 inside Virtualbox and purchased Adobe Audition. I feel dirty. Is it as good as my 5 year old copy of Soundtrack Pro? No. Will it work? That remains to be seen.

Ahem! And now without further tech talk, here's "The Ocean and the Sea."

I recorded interviews with ROTH MOBOT, TIM KAISER, ALEX DEEBA, CMKT4, THEJUNKYARD CATALYST from THRIFTSORE BORATORIUM, LOW-GAIN, and a number of other makers. What follows is my correspondence from the field. Special thanks to the makers, the Experimental Sound Studio (who hosted), and Katherine Guza for taking the incredible pictures you see below.

<itunes:summary> TWO podcasts in one weekend! Have I gone mad?!? Nope, just trying to catch up.
Here's podcast 75: SANTA'S WORKSHOP Artist Showcase.
Jeremy Bennett and Grant Parker formed Santa's Workshop in late 2010 on the campus of University of Tennessee Knoxville. The two friends decided to form a band in order to stretch beyond the creative boundaries of their very different musical backgrounds. Grant's primary instrument is bass, and he studies jazz and classical performance at UT. Jeremy makes experimental electronic music and plays drums and piano. Their goal with Santa’s Workshop is to establish a cohesive musical dialogue between their two seemingly-unrelated disciplines.
For Santa's Workshop, Grant performs on guitar and bass, culling feedback from his amplifier and an assortment of pedals and analog devices. Jeremy triggers and manipulates self-recorded audio samples using Ableton Live. Jeremy currently lives in Nashville. Grant lives in Knoxville, two hours away. They tell me the separation is in some ways useful as it keeps each focused on his respective path. Bridging those paths, after all, is what defines Santa's Workshop.
The performance you’re about to hear was recorded at Gallery F on October 10th 2011 as part of the exhibition Scientists and Artists Picture the Intangible. TIM KAISER, JEREMY WALKER, and CENOBIUM also performed. You can download the Jeremy Walker performance here. Look for the Cenobium audio as an upcoming podcast.
If you like the show, tell a friend or leave us feedback on iTunes. Enjoy!</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Four members of Murfreesboro noise collective HORSEHAIR EVERYWHERE reunite in the Theatre Intangible studios for a special improv.
The group was instrumental in the formation of Murfreesboro's experimental community. Matt Sullivan writes in a December 2010 edition of the Nashville Scene,

Noise and experimental music scenes, much like the art they produce, tend to be loose-knit, fluid and sometimes haphazard in construction. Sure, there are regional pockets with trends all their own — and enough stability for those trends to get recognized beyond their geographic boundaries — but most other places see peaks and valleys. For those, there's a giant web of interconnected musicians, labels, zines, blogs and promoters across the planet who exist to embrace whatever the newest weird may be. A world wide web, one might call it. By now, Murfreesboro should be familiar with these peaks and valleys. For every Spongebath-fueled apex, there's deep-space-worthy radio silence. That's where our story starts.

In the early 2000s Steve Molyneux met Frank Baugh at MTSU while both were taking classes on world music and sociology. From there they both joined the university's Group Sound Collage. After that they recruited like-minded friends and started their own improv jam sessions under the banner of Horsehair Everywhere, a named conjured from frayed violin and cello bows.

At the time, Molyneux played in the shape-shifting, post-most-things band Poet Named Revolver, whose membership made up a significant chunk of Horsehair Everywhere. The band started their own label called No Kings Record Co., which circulated handmade CD-R releases of the early Horsehair Everywhere recordings. The inserts for those albums didn't even refer to the group as a collective, let alone a band. Instead, they were a self-described "improvisational sound/music collage and cathartic midnight noise party society."
Tonight's podcast features STEPHEN MOLYNEUX, FRANK BAUGH, SAMUEL STEELMAN, and TJ RICHARDS. TJ currently resides in Brooklyn, New York. We were lucky enough to organize this taping around his short trip back to Tennessee. Key members absent from this improv include Lee Noble, Caleb Steelman, and Geoffrey Sexton.
Cuatro Niños is a percussive, trance-like trip, and it's one of my favorite episodes in a long time. If you like the show, tell a friend or leave us feedback in iTunes.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>"That's when I knew that I had the supernatural anointment of one of the otherlee conduits of miraculous divine healing. So now. . . reconstruct the eardrum! Polka! Listen to the polka!" - Dave Cloud - 4th Annual Halloween Extravaganza </itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>"That's when I knew that I had the supernatural anointment of one of the otherlee conduits of miraculous divine healing. So now. . . reconstruct the eardrum! Polka! Listen to the polka!" - Dave Cloud - 4th Annual Halloween Extravaganza
Join punk music legend Dave Cloud and a ragtag group of disparate instrumentalist for the most bizarre episode to date. Dave recounts the haunting tale of the evil 22 year old succubus who tempted him during his beach-front honeymoon. Is it scary? Perhaps not. Will it drive you insane? Most likely. Starring Rhendi Greenwell, Josh Gumiela, Mike Hiegemann, Randy Hunt, Pimpdaddysupreme, and the inimitable Dave Cloud! Featuring the screams of Mara Bissel and Clara Fisher. Be warned: This episode is explicit and potentially offensive to . . . well . . . everyone, especially if you're one of Dave's ex-wives.
In the words of Dave Cloud, "DIE REAL GOOD!"

<itunes:summary>MICROWAVE WINDOWS and a group of noise all-stars converged on the back porch of Noa Noa for a late night, spine-tingling, bone-chilling Halloween improvisation. Recorded live October 15th, 2011 to an audience of two, featuring Brandon from MICROWAVE WINDOWS on guitar, John Hancock from ELECTRIC INERTIA on trumpet, Josh Gumiela from FOSTER DAD on electronics and circuit bending, and Pimpdaddysupreme and Matt Lane from WORKSHOPPE RADIO PHONIK on turntables, samples, harmonica, and more. I did the live mixing, mastering, and some editing for the purposes of pacing.

<itunes:summary>Every October, Halloweird! descends upon Theatre Intangible, and we devote the month's podcasts to all things Halloween. You may have noticed it's been October for 21 days now. For that, I must apologize. It's been an incredibly busy, stressful, and productive 21 days full of concerts, recordings, and commitments. But we're going to make it up to you by cramming as many special Halloween podcasts into the last 9 days as we can. Starting with this spooky Adventure Bomb improv performed October 8th at Noa Noa. This one features Lola Koeune, Cody Bottoms, and Adventure Bomb, my scoop and loop moniker. Enjoy!</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Here's episode 69, Art Waves, the third of three Theatre Intangible presentations, performed live at Gallery F on August 27th, 2011. The performances all sought to bridge the gap between science and art. Check out the previously-released Brainwaves and Space Waves.
Art Waves features Craig Schenker on saxophone and Jamison Sevits on trumpet. Their performance is new interpretation of Steve Lacy’s song cycle Tips, composed in 1979 for voice, soprano sax, and alto sax. The pieces were responses to text selections from the notebooks of painter Georges Braque.
Here's an excerpt from Steve Lacy's notes to Tips (1980):

These are aphorisms, speculations, observations, but especially, advice to himself as an artist, and to all other artists.

Last year, I took fourteen of these phrases, and set them, in a chosen order, for voice and soprano and alto saxophones. Illustrated by the improvised sections, the result is a sort of ‘casebook cantata’, and a working examination into the nature of free play, in this case between two saxophonists, but also about preparation and spontaneity, and of music and information.
Craig and Jamison chose a selection of the pieces and arranged them for trumpet and saxophone. Here are the quotes they chose:
1. We will never have any peace. The present is perpetual.
2. I want to be in tune with nature rather than copy it.
3. Art is made to trouble. Science reassures.
4. Limited means lead to new forms, invite creation, make style.
5. Echo answers echo. All is repercussion.
6. With Age, art and life become one.</itunes:summary>
