The study, prepared by the N.C. Department of Commerce - Policy, Research, and Strategic Planning Division, shows that the Creative Industry in North Carolina contributes $41.4 billion to our state's economy and accounts for nearly 300,000 jobs!

“Our creative industry is robust, and this important study underscores its role in North Carolina’s future,” said Carlisle. “Creativity in the workforce stimulates new products and services, and helps make North Carolina the most competitive it can be in the global economy.”

The NC Creative Industry is comprised of three types of enterprise: Arts, Entertainment and New Media, and Design. “People with creative ideas, innovators, and entrepreneurs bring investment and jobs to our communities,” said Gov. Bev Perdue. “This report highlights the creative spark in North Carolina, and will be a big help in economic development.”

Find out more here: http://www.ncarts.org/creative_economy.

"This Little World" looks to be, primarily, the blog of Triad Stage Artistic Director Preston Lane. He promises to start a "dialouge about the work we're doing and the directon we're heading." Lane also promises to talk about theatre he sees outside of Triad Stage! I'm so excited to read his thoughts about theatre in North Carolina and beyond!

So, where'd the name "This Little World" come from? Lane says:

"The phrase “This little world” comes from one of my favorite films, Ingmar Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander. I saw the movie the year it came out in the Appalachian Cinema in Boone, NC. The impact that Bergman’s glorious, mysterious and disturbing film had on a pre-teenager in a small Blue Ridge town was enormous and began a love affair with Bergman’s work as a director of both film and theatre. I am thrilled to have an opportunity to see a new stage adaptation of the film at the National Theater of Norway this December."

Here's the actual quote:
"I love this little world inside the thick walls of this playhouse... Outside is the big world, and sometimes the little world succeeds for a moment in reflecting the big world, so that we understand it better." --Ingmar Bergman

Congrats Triad!!

Welcome back the quintessential elf gone bad in this hilarious antidote for holiday havoc. Spend some time with the irreverent Crumpet – one of Santa’s little helpers during the Macy’s Christmas shopping rush – as he copes with thousands of shoppers and their kiddies with his whacked out, wicked wit. The Santaland Diaries runs November 19 through December 19, 2009.
Opening Night is Thursday, November 19.

The Santaland Diaries is not recommended for younger audiences.

David Sedaris, a native of Raleigh, North Carolina, originally wrote the essay The Santaland Diaries as a true account of his time spent working as an elf in “SantaLand” at Macy’s department store in New York City. Sedaris gained national fame after reading the essay on National Public Radio in 1992, and published it in his collections Barrel Fever and Holidays on Ice. In 1996, Tony Award®-winning director Joe Mantello (Wicked, 9 to 5) adapted the story as a one-act, one-man stage play.

This production marks the fourth time The Santaland Diaries has been performed at Triad Stage, the first two times being MainStage holiday specials in 2004 and 2005, and the third was the 2008 sold-out production in The UpStage Cabaret. This new production is directed by Jim Wren, a professor of Theatre at UNC Greensboro, where he just directed the hit Evil Dead: The Musical. Jim Moscater dons the elf outfit as Crumpet. Moscater earned his MFA degree in Theatre at UNC Greensboro. In addition to acting, he is a novelist, and will publish his first book, “You’re Never Alone” in 2010. He is also a writer/researcher/consultant for PSFK, a trends consultancy in NYC, and a musician under the alias of “fantasierock.”

All performances are at Triad Stage’s UpStage Cabaret on the top floor of The Pyrle Theater, located at 232 South Elm Street in historic downtown Greensboro, North Carolina

Show times for The Santaland Diaries are Thursdays – Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., with additional late night performances Fridays and Saturdays at 10:00 p.m.
There is no performance on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26.

To purchase tickets or for performance information on The Santaland Diaries, call the Triad Stage Box Office at 336.272.0160 or toll-free at 866.579.TIXX (8499), or visit www.triadstage.org.

In full Victorian costume Dr. Marc Napolitano will bring to life Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and a whole host of memorable characters; a brief Q&A session will follow the performance.

“The heart of the story lies in Scrooge’s moral awakening,” said Dr. Napolitano. “There is a social message of opening one’s eyes to the fact there is a fundamental connection between all human beings.”

First published in 1843, A Christmas Carol has been a holiday favorite ever since. On Christmas Eve Ebenezer Scrooge receives a surprise visit from the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley, who comes with a warning. If Scrooge does not change his greedy ways, his soul will bear chains for eternity. In a single night the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come will show one man the importance of kindness, generosity, and compassion – the spirit of Christmas.

Dr. Napolitano received his Ph.D. in English with a concentration in Victorian literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he currently lectures in the English Department. His research and scholarship have focused heavily on the life and times of Dickens.

Deep Dish is located in Chapel Hill's University Mall, on Estes Drive and US 15-501.

Tickets are $10 adults and $6 students/children. They are available at the Deep Dish box office in University Mall, Wednesday to Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m., at www.deepdishtheater.org, or (919) 968-1515.

The Deep Dish Theater Company is committed to presenting compelling, human-centered dramatic work that contributes to the cultural richness of the Triangle area and challenges audiences to explore concerns of the community and the world-at-large.
