Hello everyone,

It's a pleasure to announce that The Bill Manager has reached its 500+ users milestone. We've been growing at a steady pace since the website was launched back in October, 2007. I thank each and every person that has contributed to the growth of The Bill Manager, wether it was by suggesting features, making me aware of bugs, or by simply using the website, every one of you played an important part. I thank you all.

When the website was first started, the goal was to provide a free and easy to use tool for anyone to use. Each feature and update is designed with those two main goals in mind, and it's not always easy to keep to them. I often catch myself thinking "is this useful to everyone, or is this useful only to me?", that mindset came from the initial goal of building a bill manager for my personal use.

Right now I beleive the website is very close to it's goal, and it's taking even more steps towards it. Many features which have been suggested by users are currently in the process of being developed or tested. And others i'm still scracthing my head over. But the redesign of the website was the first step to addressing some issues, particulary the cramped space in the calendar. Plus the new design look much more professional.

What's in store for the future? Well, first all the new features need to be launched. And those include: reminders by text message, mobile version of the website, edit/delete deposits, budget controller, more reports, visual cues on calendar on which bills have been paid, and many more. Plans also include making the website more social, perhaps a forum, or a chat area.

That's it for now, I would love to hear from all of you on your thoughts.

Regards,

-Javier

Hello everyone,

As many of you have noticed, the website has been redesigned. This new design is much more professional looking, and also provides more usable content area. The wider area will address some space issues many of you have raised. Particularly in the calendar area. I am also working on several of the features that have been requested, as well as touching up some of the current features.

I would like to know what you guys think of the new design.

I have been chating with Tony Tovar, the author of Moolah Blog and we decided to help each other out. So with out further delay, here is what he has to say about his blog:

"My name is Tony Tovar, an Economics student at the University of Texas at Austin. This blog's purpose is to serve as a place where I can share knowledge with an audience interested in everything about moolah! From news about moolah to advice about moolah! Postings here are either personally written or are articles that I have found will increase our knowledge about what is going on in the world today and what we should do to keep our wealth up in today's economy!"

I want to let you guys know of an important change. If you go to your bill manager page you will see that there are no longer two tabs: Upcoming Expenses and Past Expenses. Instead it's all consolidated into one tab: Expenses. Soon you will also see the Upcoming and Past expenses separated again in some way, I still don't know which way, but I think it's important that you can quickly see which expenses passed already.

We are in the process of redesigning the website's overall layout. Our goal is to come up a layout that maximizes the amount of space available to expand the functionality of the Bill Manager control panel. This will allow more space for the calendar which is now cramped in a way for users who have many expenses in a single day, or that have expenses with a long name. We'll also be able to display more information about a particular item, like if it's already paid or not, without you having to find it in the past or upcoming expenses tabs.

In my attempt to find other blogs and websites that relate to personal finance, I came accross a blog called: Single Guy Money and naturally, I asked him if he would be interested in adding a link back to The Bill Manager. He responsed with a yes, and even started using it himself.

We have turned the updates and news section into a sort of miniblog. What this allows us to do is announce a new feature, or a update to a feature, and then you guys can let us know what you think of it. This is great in the sense that it will allow you to know what other people thought about it, and see how they're using it, and it will serve as a centralized place for us to evaluate each individual feature's performance rather going through emails all day. Sp please don't hesitate to use this feature as it is another step we're taking in order to improve our service to you.

I am also in debt, and while searching for ways to build The Bill Manager I came accross other websites that had a tool like this one, and others that provided a lot of reading material. I am glad to say that since reading the tips and stories these websites/blogs provided, I have been able to develop better features and also manage my own finances better.

News:New RSS Feed

Hello everyone, I have decided to discontinue the weekly newsletters. The main reason being that I want to consolidate information. Previously I had a weekly newsletter, and a 3rd party service to build the RSS feed, which I had to remember to go in and update. I also decided that sending a newsletter with the new weekly article is redundant if you also signed up for the RSS feed. Third and final reason, is that I finally learned to properly build an RSS feed where I can distribute content that is grouped in categories. Those categories will be the weekly articles, which will update itself when the article's release date hits, and feature updates, which will update when a new feature is included.

I've been working on this one for a while. Basically the reports now have a very cool 3D pie chart to show in percentage form the dollar total where you've spent your money. When I ran my report for example, I see that I spend WAY too much in the entertainment category

I am getting ready to roll out the "Payment Due Reminder" feature. I am about 90% done in regards to functionality and testing.

This means that soon you will see some new options when you enter an expense. The new options will ask you if you want to receive reminders for that expense, and how many days before the payment's due date you want to start being reminded to make the payment.

You will continue to be reminded of the payment every day after that until you record the payment in the control panel.

Due to popular demand, and I've been asking myself to implement this also...we're glad to announce that comments can now be added to expenses, as well as to payments. So that means you can record comments, notes to your expense, and also, separate comments/notes when you record a payment. This should give you enough flexibility when applying payments. Enjoy :)

We've added a new report called "Expense Forecast". With this report you can see how much money you expect to spend in a certain date range. This way you can avoid cash flow crunches by making proper adjustments to your budget. For example, I find it very helpful to know how much money I will be spending on recurring expenses until my next paycheck.

Things were moving along smoothly. We'd picked our venue, our cantor, and our date. Now that we had some concrete details down, it was time to send out invitations. People usually spend A LOT of money on invitations. We considered them important, but not so important that we needed flowery, monogramed, bow-tied pieces of art. We needed something that reflected who we were, and that were cheap. We also decided not to do Save the Dates, something trendy that a lot of people are doing these days to let relatives and friends know ahead of time about the wedding. We figured that A) There wasn't enough time between the wedding and our engagement to do them (five months) and B) That word of mouth would spread faster and be more efficient. We turned out to be right and in the process probably saved at least $200.

During the last several articles, I've been putting together the essentials of our wedding for you: the location, the type of ceremony we're having, the place of the reception, and the date. Once these details started falling into place (and believe, me, it wasn't as easy as the articles make it sound! Putting on a wedding, even a small-ish one, is a LOT of work,) it was time to start filling in the blanks. I started with my dress. A lot of people say that every girl dreams of their wedding dress all the time, and knows what she wants. This was definitely not the case for me. Not only had I never doodled my name with my future husband's last name dreamily in class, I'd never given a thought to what kind of wedding dress I wanted. From the weddings that were going on around me, I knew people shelled out A LOT OF MONEY for a dress they would wear for around eight hours and then sit in their closet for 20 years, or more, possibly to be passed down, but most likely to hang on the hanger. I know that people spent up to $5000 for a dress. No joke. That was 1/3 of our wedding budget.

A piece of advice: if you are looking to plan a budget wedding, try not to have it at any popular sites, or on a Saturday. Saturdays are the most expensive days to have wedding,s for a good reason. It's a pain in the ass to get people to come out on most other days. However, the people that really want to come will find a way to make it, and this usually lowers your headcount, another good way to lower expenses. At first, I wanted a reception site that reflected my personality, or whatever mushy stuff The Knot tells you. Don't listen to The Knot. It will make your wedding grow exponentially.

We got engaged in May and wanted to get married as soon as was practically possible. So, we first decided to decide on a date, in the hopes that it would help other things to fall in line as well. We knew there was a lot to plan, and at first, we were overwhelmed. While there are web sites like The Knot and indiebride to help you deal with specific questions, there's really nothing to tell you exactly where to start planning your wedding.

This website has covered many aspects of budgets and financial planning, from online savings accounts, to tax help. To eating out on a budget. One thing that is not discussed very much in the world of personal finance is government bonds. These can be a great addition to your portfolio, especially in periods such as this one that are full of financial uncertainty.

If you've been reading our articles and preparing your personal budget, creating retirement investments and saving money, you should have a sizable amount in the bank (or at least some money to go off of.) With everything that's been going on in the news lately, you might also be concerned about what would happen if your bank defaults much in the way Bear Stearns, Countryside, and lots of smaller financial institutions have.

Chances are if you frequent a lot of the same restaurants, you have seen prices for your favorite dishes increase over the past several months, especially at pizza restaurants. This phenomenon is a result of exploding food prices. Food and non-alcoholic beverage prices have risen 4.7% in 2007, with wheat prices and milk prices being the highest, as a result of higher oil prices and the deflating dollar. What can you do about it? There are several ways to save on food prices and still stay within your monthly budget.

The taxman cometh. Are you ready? Technically, you should have already at least finished your taxes, if not mailed them in. However, if you are like this author, you are still sweating. Well all know, taxes are important, especially this year, when you are eligible for a refund. But what if this is your first year paying taxes, and you don't know where to turn, or where to start? In order to fit taxes into your budget planning, here is a small guide, which by no means replaces talking to your parents, a financial adviser, or just a really good friend that's an accountant.

Banks are most commonly known for services such as savings accounts, but it seems that every time you walk into a branch (or glance at a bank's website,) that they have other services available, in particular, IRAs and CDs. While they may seem uninteresting now, learning about these two products and other long-term services your bank offers can be a great help in the long-term. It's easy to get confused between these two products, so here's a breakdown:

You know the old saying, 'Time equals money.' It's been used so much that we usually say it without giving any thought to the meaning. But if you really think about it, this expression is so true, especially when budgeting and beginning to live on your own after college. Here's an example: you want to live close to work in the city. This usually entails rent more expensive than what you would usually pay. However, you save money on transportation and on going to work every day, which equals money.

In college, the only things that were constants were exams. In the real world, it gets worse. There are bills. At first, it can be overwhelming to be expected to pay certain expenses every month, without fail. The harder part is probably to budget them into your monthly expenses. Speaking from personal experience, I can say that the first time I was expected to shell out over $1000 for my one-bedroom apartment (I live in the DC area), then, on a different day, $50 for my cell phone, then Internet, I was definitely overwhelmed.

The recent economic instability has a direct impact on your finances in the form of interest rates. You may have heard that Ben Bernanke cut interest rates last week, by half a point, and two weeks ago, and by .75 of a point two weeks ago to stave off the recession, which at this point, looks pretty much impossible.

There was recently an article in the Washington Post about how much people from 21-35 spend when going out. Basically, a group of 20 and 30-somethings were asked to manage their personal budget for two months (Play Money) and then do a breakdown of their expenses. Some of the responses were astounding, "When Paxton Styles goes clubbing with friends, his drink of choice is Crown Royal whiskey. That, he says, is not good for his finances. In two weeks, he spent $680.43 on his social life. Much of that -- $296.16 -- went towards bar and nightclub tabs. Happy hours cost him $133. Dinners and late-night munching were another $94.92."

You have your monthly budget all planned, you have a bill manager or some sort of budgeting tool set up, and you are on track with your purchases. Then, BAM-the holidays. More specifically, Valetine's Day, at this time of year, invades your life with flowers, chocolates, chocolate-dipped flowers, teddy-bears, chocolate-dipped teddy bears, and all the rest. How do you deal with Valetine's Day? More specifically, how do you deal with any interruptions in your regularly scheduled life?

Graduating from college is a big accomplishment. But, so is paying your student loans afterwards. If you have entered the real world not only having to adjust to living on your own and working, but paying huge monthly payments, you are not alone. Millions of graduates start "real life" without monthly budgets, any way to manage their bills, and all of their student loans scattered, a huge burden to take on alone.

So you've run through all of the funds from the bank of Mom and Dad, your savings from your summer job, and your friends won't lend you any more. It's tough being a college student. Not only do you have to focus on going to classes and (gulp) graduating eventually, you also need money for just about everything.

Budget, budget, budget is the key word for many personal finance websites. It's pretty obvious that you need to plan in order to manage your money successfully, but also pretty hard if you're a college student with few ways of obtaining an income. During my sophomore year, I irregularly rewrote class notes for people, did some laboratory research and hung up flyers for beer and pizza money. It was close to impossible to keep managing my bills for books, tuition payments, visits to the doctor, and entertainment costs when I wasn't sure when or where the money was coming from.
