Patty Drumgoole is having a fundraiser at Louise and Jerry’s this coming Wednesday June 19th 4-7pm to help control Hoboken’s feral cat population. Here is an explanation behind what the fundraiser goes for…

“I am the social worker at Hoboken High School but my work doesn’t stop at helping students. I also assist feral and stray cats and kittens. Using the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) approach, I humanely trap feral cats; get them spayed/neutered and rabies vaccinated; then return them to their original location. There they are managed by a resident who feeds them regularly. TNR is the only proven method that successfully reduces the feral cat population. Once fixed, feral cats live a more stress free life without being a nuisance to people. In fact, they provide benefits by preventing mice and rats from occupying our neighborhood.

I know many people in Hoboken who are concerned about the cats and others who are annoyed by them. TNR satisfies them all. Because cats are territorial, they do not allow new comers into their colony. When a colony is fixed and managed, the negative behaviors cease and the colony will disappear through attrition. Trapping and removing essentially creates a vacuum effect and other cats will simply find their way in.

I have been doing this in town for about 8 years but have been trained since 2002. My hope is to get this endorsed by the city but first I need the support. I started having fundraisers a few years back; this is my 3rd one. Local establishments donate food and gifts to raffle off. It’s always a fun time.

In 2011 I finally became official and Hoboken Feral Cats was established. This is a 501c(3) organization and exists solely on donations.”

Here is a free cultural event in Hoboken with a view of New York city and a quality orchestra. This program was created several years ago by the current Mayor Dawn Zimmer. This year’s selection has a variety of composers from different periods and is similar to a Boston Pops concert….

Take a seat on the lawn of Pier A Park where Music Director Jacques Lacombe leads the Orchestra in a concert of light classics and popular favorites—with a patriotic flair. As night falls, the New York City skyline lights up and is reflected in the Hudson River, making this a very unique and romantic summer symphony concert destination.

The Orchestra performs selections from Bizet’s Carmen, Copland’s Rodeo and Bernstein’s West Side Story, alongside favorite tunes from Gershwin and movie classics like John Williams’ Raiders March. Patriotic tributes include “America the Beautiful” and Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” and the Orchestra honors servicemen and women with the moving Armed Forces Salute.

Here is a event that combines art, yoga and wine tasting to benefit children less fortunate in Jamaica.

Hob’Art and “One Love” team up for Fundraising Event

To Support Jamaica Orphanage

On June 19th, the Hob’Art gallery in Hoboken will be transformed into a zen retreat in support of a local volunteer group which calls themselves “One Love”. The partnership will raise funds for Mustard Seed Communities, a nonprofit organization that cares for orphaned and abandoned children.

Hob’art is teaming up with One Love to host a yoga, art and wine-tasting fundraiser on Wednesday June 19th at the Hob’Art gallery space at located at 720 Monroe Street in Hoboken. The event – called “Come To Your Senses” – will feature a brief artists’ talk, followed by a 1-hour vinyasa yoga session led by talented yoga-instructor Toni Porrello. Following the yoga session, Porrello – who is also a wine sommelier – will present wine and chocolate pairings in a 1-hour tasting.

The idea to combine the yoga and wine events and host them at the gallery space was the brain-child of photographer Andrea Milo, a member and former VP of Hob’Art, who is also a co-leader of the One Love team and a long-time volunteer with Mustard Seed Communities. Milo had been looking for a way to combine her interest in Hob’Art and the artists’ community in Hoboken with her fundraising efforts for Mustard Seed, and when she met Toni Porrelli, the idea for this event came to life. Porrelli hosts yoga/wine events around the region, and Andrea had attended one and loved the experience of bringing awareness and focus to the various senses through a calming yoga practice followed by a wine-tasting, both under Porrelli’s expert guidance. With this event, Milo is taking the experience one step further by providing attendees the transformative and soul-expanding experience of viewing artwork at the peaceful Hob’Art gallery in addition to the yoga and wine portions of the evening. She hopes this will be the first of many such events at the gallery.

The suggested donation for the event is $30 per person, 100% of which will go to support Mustard Seed Communities and the Hob’Art gallery (which is a cooperative and also a nonprofit organization). Space is limited so advance purchase is suggested. All the wines sampled will also be available for purchase.

Tickets for the event can be purchased here: http://www.mustardseed.com/goto/OneLove or email Andrea at onelove0712@gmail.com

When: Wed. June 19th, 7-9pm

Where: The Hob’Art Cooperative Gallery – 720 Monroe St, 2nd Floor, #E208, Hoboken, NJ 07030

Hoboken smart electric drive sneak peak set for June 22-23 10am-6pm Near PATH

Here is a chance to test drive the possible future in Hoboken this coming weekend. I only say possible since it is not a sure bet that electrical cars will take off as a major alternative transport in the US let alone Hoboken. Still the thought of being on the leading or bleeding edge of technology in a potentially eco-friendly way might have some appeal foe some Hoboken drivers. More on the smart car test drive below:

smart funtestdrive tour arrives to showcase

America’s most affordable electric car

Hoboken smart electric drive sneak peak set for June 22-23

smart, the iconic urban microcar, arrives in Hoboken, NJ as part of a national “smart funtestdrive tour” that gives locals an exclusive opportunity to test the all-new smart electric drive.

The smart electric drive is the most affordable electric vehicle in the U.S. and has the smallest footprint of any car in the world. With a range of 76 miles of city driving and 122 city miles per gallon gasoline equivalent, the smart electric drive is ideal for eco-conscious commuters.

Test drivers of the smart electric drive will also receive special giveaways. The dates are June 22 and June 23, 2013 with test drives are from 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. The location is 23 Hudson Place Hoboken, NJ 07030

smart, the iconic microcar, hits the road on an eleven-city tour bringing the all-new smart electric drive to eco-minded urbanites across the country. Each stop on the tour offers an opportunity to drive the most affordable electric vehicle on the market, with an MSRP of $25,000 (additional federal, state and local subsidies may further reduce the cost of the car). The smart electric drive achieves 122 city MPGe, or miles per gallon gasoline equivalent.

The eleven-city tour kicks off in a concept pop-up experience at Santa Monica Place in Los Angeles. This 10-day event takes place from April 19 to April 28 and will include surprise music performances by world-renowned recording artists, complimentary brunches prepared by celebrity chefs Chris Jacobsen and Lee Anne Wong from Bravo’s Top Chef, trunk shows by local designers Winnie & Kat and Vokare, and more.

The smart funtestdrive then rolls on to the following cities: Portland (May 2-3), San Francisco (May 11-12), San Diego (May 18-19), Dallas (May 25-26), Atlanta (June 1-2), Miami (June 8-9), Washington D.C. (June 15-16), Hoboken (June 22-23), Brooklyn (June 29-30) and Chicago (July 6-7). The tour details and city highlights can be found at www.smartcarfundrive.com.

smart highlights:

In addition to getting behind the wheel of a unique cutting-edge electric vehicle, the tour showcases many of smart’s attributes from its virtually unlimited customization options to its patented tridion safety cell technology, which acts like the roll-cage in a race car.

The heart smart safety is the tridion safety cell, which will be on display in each city. Made largely of high-strength steel, the rigid tridion safety cell is designed to distribute impact energy over the entire width of the car body and keep its occupants safe.

smart thinks green while saving you green:

The smart electric drive is a zero-emission statement that further defines the spirit of smart, which has led the auto industry in urban mobility and energy conservation. Based on the iconic smart fortwo, and available in both coupe and cabriolet styles, the new generation smart fortwo electric drive has the smallest footprint of any car on U.S. roads today and represents a key step in sustainable transportation.

The smart electric drive coupe will retail at $25,000 and the cabriolet model will retail at $28,000 when both models go on sale in the U.S. in May 2013. Customers may also be eligible for federal tax credits (which run up to $7,500) or state/local tax credits, further reducing the cost.

all about smart:

smart, a Daimler AG brand, has its U.S. headquarters in Montvale, New Jersey. The smart model-line consists of five fortwo models: the pure coupe, passion coupe, passion cabriolet and all electric drive versions of the coupe and cabriolet. The all-new third generation electric drive arrives in May 2013. All smart models sold in the U.S. are covered by a four-year, 50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty.

Classified as ultra-low emissions vehicles by the State of California Air Resources Board, smart models are just under nine feet long, 5 feet tall and 5 feet wide. Despite their microcar exterior dimensions, smart vehicles are surprisingly roomy inside and have a full array of technological and safety features including the patented tridion safety cell which is designed to protect occupants in the event of a collision. All smart vehicles, designed to be 85% recyclable and over 95% reclaimable, are produced in the environmentally oriented “smartville” factory in Hambach, France. Additional information on smart can be found at www.smartusa.com.
