Summary

“Flourish: A Visionary New Understanding of Happiness and Well-being” by Martin Seligman is a book about positive psychology.

Martin Seligman is the father of Positive Psychology and in this book he explains how it came to be.

I felt that this book demystifies happiness.

Martin Seligman proposes using the term flourishing instead of happiness because the word happiness is too vague and everyone means something different when they say it.

To be honest, I’m not convinced that flourishing is a better term.

Regardless, the book gives you a clear framework on living your best life.

It is not always immediately obvious how EXACTLY to put it into practice, but if you use the PERMA approach the book offers, you will find that gradually your thoughts and your outlook on life begins to shift.

You will be able to achieve greater well-being and lead a more fulfilling life.

Key Insights

PERMA Model: Seligman introduces the PERMA model, which stands for Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment. These elements contribute to overall well-being.

Positive Emotions: Experiencing joy, gratitude, and other positive emotions enhances happiness.

Engagement: Being fully absorbed in activities, often referred to as “flow,” increases life satisfaction.

Relationships: Strong, positive relationships are essential for well-being.

Meaning: Having a purpose or meaning in life contributes to long-term happiness.

Accomplishment: Pursuing and achieving goals gives a sense of pride and satisfaction.

Resilience: Building resilience helps cope with stress and adversity.

Gratitude and Optimism: Practicing gratitude and maintaining an optimistic outlook can improve mental health.

My rating

The Verdict

“Flourish” is a comprehensive guide to achieving well-being and happiness.

I lowered the practicality score because it wasn’t always apparent to me how exactly you can use the information in your daily life.

For example, how do you find meaning?

That’s a tough one.

So, it’s not the author’s fault that this is the work that we, readers, need to do in order to make this book work.

Seligman’s insights are based on extensive research in positive psychology.

The practical advice and real-life examples make it a valuable read for anyone looking to improve their quality of life.

The post Flourish: A Visionary New Understanding of Happiness and Well-being Book Review first appeared on The Book Bella.

“The New Psycho-Cybernetics” by Maxwell Maltz, edited by Dan S. Kennedy, is a guide to self-improvement using mental techniques.

This book is like the granddaddy to all modern personal development books.

This book was first published 1960 and at times it shows its age in the language it uses.

The principles it teaches, however, are as valid today as they were in the 1960.

It combines Maltz’s original principles with modern insights.

Key Insights

Self-Image: Your self-image determines your success. Improving it can lead to better outcomes.

Visualization: Mentally rehearsing success can enhance actual performance.

Goal Setting: Clear, specific goals are crucial. Write them down and review them regularly.

Relaxation: Practice relaxation techniques to reduce stress and improve focus.

Affirmations: Positive self-talk can reprogram your mind for success.

Habit Formation: Consistent practice of new behaviors leads to lasting change.

Resilience: Learn to bounce back from setbacks. Persistence is key to achieving goals.

The Verdict

The two of my main takeaways were: the ideas of self-image, and the idea of mental practice.

You cannot do things that go against your self-image. So, if you don’t believe you can be happy, you never will.

If you believe that you can and should be happy, you will.

Regardless of your current life situation.

So, how do you change your self-image?

You can change yourself in almost any way you want (including self-image) via mental practice.

The authors call it “the theater of the mind”.

It’s consciously and deliberately imagining whatever you are working on.

So, by mental practice, you can change your mind. And by changing your mind you change your life.

“The New Psycho-Cybernetics” is a must-read if you’re not satisfied with your life and your way of thinking.

The post The New Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz Book Review first appeared on The Book Bella.

“The Practicing Mind: Developing Focus and Discipline in Your Life” by Thomas M. Sterner is a guide to mastering focus and building discipline.

This book helped me realize one important fact: rushing doesn’t always make you faster.

Quite the opposite is often true.

Sometimes (or often?) if you want to accomplish something faster, better and more efficiently, you need to relax and slow down.

Slowing down is also a good way to relax.

Sterner shares insights on how to develop a mindful approach to life and work.

Key Insights

Process Over Outcome: Focus on the process rather than the end result. This reduces stress and increases satisfaction.

Mindfulness: Practice being present in the moment. This enhances focus and reduces distractions.

Patience: Cultivate patience. Progress takes time, and rushing can lead to mistakes.

Discipline: Develop discipline through consistent practice. Small, daily efforts lead to long-term success.

Self-Monitoring: Regularly check in with yourself. Adjust your actions and mindset as needed.

Breaking Tasks Down: Divide large tasks into smaller, manageable steps. This makes them less overwhelming.

Non-Judgmental Awareness: Observe your thoughts and actions without judgment. This helps in understanding and improving your habits.

The Verdict

To me, a former anxiety sufferer, “The Practicing Mind” was like a revelation.

Trying to “relax” never worked.

However, this book proposes a slightly different approach.

Slow down.

Slowing down, I found, automatically leads to relaxation.

And often it doesn’t make you any slower!

Whenever I’m stressed, I apply Sterner’s practical advice and mindfulness techniques. The book is straightforward and effective, making it a must-read for personal development.

I liked this book because it gives you practical ideas on how to improve your communication skills.

Still, as with any skill, you need to practice.

And books aren’t very good at helping you practice.

Voss, a former FBI hostage negotiator, shares insights from high-stakes situations to help readers improve their negotiation skills.

“Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depended on It” by Chris Voss is a practical guide to negotiation and communication techniques.

I used these techniques in my business and personal life.

My favorite is: “How am I supposed to do that?” when someone makes a request of you that you cannot or don’t want to accommodate.

Key Insights

Active Listening: Pay close attention to what the other party is saying. This helps understand their needs and build rapport.

Mirroring and Labeling: Repeat the last few words the other person said and label their emotions. This shows empathy and keeps the conversation going.

Tactical Empathy: Understand and acknowledge the other party’s feelings. This builds trust and opens up solutions.

The Black Swan Technique: Use unexpected questions to disrupt the other party’s thought process and gain control of the negotiation.

Calibrated Questions: Ask open-ended questions to gather information and keep the conversation flowing.

The Yes Ladder: Use a series of small, agreeable questions to lead the other party to a “yes” answer.

The Decoy: Present multiple options to make the desired option seem more attractive.

The Empathy Switch: Shift the focus from “I” to “we” to create a collaborative atmosphere.

The Negotiator’s Mindset: Stay calm, patient, and focused during negotiations.

“Never Split the Difference” is a valuable resource for anyone looking to enhance their negotiation or communication skills.

Kevin Horsley is a memory world-record holder.

He knows his stuff.

People like him often can’t teach, but I found this book very helpful.

In “Unlimited Memory,” Kevin Horsley teaches techniques to improve memory. This book is practical.

It avoids jargon. The focus is on methods you can use immediately.

Summary

This is one of the most practical books I’ve ever bought.

It also comes in the form of an audiobook, but the techniques Kevin Horsley teaches are mostly visual, so you will often find yourself hearing: “please check the accompanying document”.

Being a practical guide, the focus here is on you.

You need to make it work.

Key Insights

Believe in yourself. You need to believe in your ability to improve your memory if you want to improve your memory.

Your memory is like a muscle. Use it or lose it. If you use your memory, it will improve. If you don’t it will become worse.

Visualize!: Humans can memorize much better when they visualize information. Therefore, the majority of memorization techniques rely on visual aids.

You need a system: Creating a system in your mind will allow you to quickly absorb a lot of information and keep it. Unlimited Memory by Kevin Horsley offers several frameworks to do just that.

My rating

Easy to understand

Verdict

If you want to improve your memory, this book is for you.

Even before reading this book I found that I could train my memory to remember visual information.

This broke one of the biggest obstacles on the path to better memory: not believing it’s possible.

Unlimited Memory by Kevin Horsley spends a great deal of time focusing on this important factor.

If you overcome this mental block, then the techniques in this book will make sure you succeed in improving your memory.

The post Unlimited Memory by Kevin Horsley Book Review first appeared on The Book Bella.

Mark Manson’s The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fck* is a refreshing take on personal development.

It kinda follows from the title.

For me, the greatest value of this book lies in the author’s ability to be honest.

Too many authors (and people in general) hide behind a facade.

Not the case with Mr. Manson.

He says it like it is.

In my personal life, honesty has been one of my greatest tools for personal development.

Summary

Manson argues that life is full of problems.

Instead of trying to avoid them, we should choose which problems to care about.

He emphasizes the importance of accepting our limitations and focusing on what truly matters.

Basically, the premise of the book is: “Find something worth giving a f*ck about and then don’t give a f*ck about anything else because it’s not important”

Verdict

Manson’s writing is blunt and straightforward. His use of humor and real-life examples makes the book engaging.

However, I found his advice to be a little less practical than I’d like.

On the other hand, this book is about the “art” of not giving a f*ck, not about the “nuts and bolts”. So that may be by design.

I found that I had already been embodying a lot of what he teaches, so, for me, it wasn’t a great learning experience.

On the other hand (I have four hands already?!) I learned those lessons from A LOT of pain in my life. So, if you don’t want to learn things the hard way, this book is a great “thought vaccine” for that.

If you learn the concepts from this book and apply them in your life, you will be stronger when adversity strikes (and it will!).

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fck* is a must-read for anyone tired of the usual self-help clichés.

Verdict

Joseph’s writing is clear and engaging. He uses real-life examples to show how people can overcome trauma.

My main takeaways were:

Freezing is a common stress response (in addition to flight or fight) – this is important because sometimes people feel guilty for freezing in dangerous situations.

Clear statistics on trauma and recovery. In the book, he mentions that PTSD develops in the minority of trauma cases. Majority of trauma resolves itself naturally.

What Doesn’t Kill Us is a valuable read for anyone facing trauma or supporting someone who is. It offers practical advice and a new perspective on overcoming adversity.

If you find that you’re not dealing with life’s adversity the way you’d like to, I recommend reading this book.

James Clear’s Atomic Habits is a guide to building good habits and breaking bad ones. It’s based on small, actionable steps.

I learned about his work through TIm Ferriss’s blog even before reading his book.

I used the approaches he recommends to build many of my life-long habits.

For example, I have missed a total of about 40 days of exercise in the past 11 years.

I don’t have any issues with eating junk foods.

Understanding how habits are formed also helped me stop wasting my time.

For example, I used to read the news every evening.

It was taking too much time and didn’t provide me with nearly any benefit.

This book helps you deal with just such situations.

Another book that goes well along with it is the Willpower Instinct By Kelly McGonigal. You can read the review here: ==LINK==

Summary

Clear explains that small changes can lead to big results.

He focuses on the idea of “atomic habits,” tiny adjustments that compound over time to create significant improvements.

Key Insights

The Four Laws of Behavior Change: Clear outlines four laws for creating good habits and breaking bad ones: Make it obvious, make it attractive, make it easy, and make it satisfying.

Identity-Based Habits: Focusing on who you want to become rather than what you want to achieve. Habits that align with your identity are more likely to stick.

Habit Stacking: Pairing a new habit with an existing one to create a routine. This makes it easier to remember and implement new behaviors.

Environment Design: Adjusting your environment to support your habits. Simple changes in your surroundings can make a big difference.

The Two-Minute Rule: Start new habits by doing them for just two minutes. This makes it easier to begin and helps build consistency.

Tracking Progress: Keeping track of your habits helps maintain motivation and accountability. Use a habit tracker to monitor your progress.

Inversion of the Four Laws: To break a bad habit, invert the four laws: Make it invisible, make it unattractive, make it difficult, and make it unsatisfying.

Compound Effect: Small habits can lead to remarkable results over time. Clear explains how incremental improvements can compound into significant gains.

Focus on Systems, Not Goals: Instead of obsessing over goals, focus on the system and process that leads to those goals. This shift in focus can make habits more sustainable.

Immediate Rewards: To make habits stick, find ways to give yourself immediate rewards. This can help reinforce the behavior.

Overcoming Plateaus: Expect and prepare for plateaus in progress. Understanding that they are part of the process helps you stay committed.

Social Influence: The people around you can significantly impact your habits. Surround yourself with those who support your goals and habits.

But I was wrong.

If you’ve heard of this book, but haven’t read/listened to it. I highly recommend it.

Duckworth defines grit as a combination of passion and perseverance. She argues that talent alone is not enough. Grit involves hard work and determination over the long term.

Key Insights from “Grit”

My rating

Easy to understand

Verdict

Grit is a valuable read for anyone looking to achieve long-term goals.

Personally, I found it to be a little longer than it should have been.

The core principle of the book can be summarized in a couple sentences, but the book is much longer than that.

It emphasizes the importance of hard work, passion, and resilience. We all know they are important.

But my key takeaway was that effort counts twice.

On the other hand, as a teacher I felt that the explanation of why some people can tolerate higher effort loads is missing.

Why do some people practice for hours on end, while others get quickly discouraged?

I did not find the answer to my question.

As far as I understand, there is no research right now that would give that answer.

I hypothesize that it has something to do with “talent”, and that “talent” is what makes people tolerate higher practice loads.

Duckworth’s insights can help readers develop their grit and reach their full potential.

If you’ve read the book, share your thoughts in the comments. Let’s discuss!

The post Angela Duckworth’s Grit Book Review first appeared on The Book Bella.

Kelly McGonigal’s The Willpower Instinct literally changed my life.

I bought several copies of it to share with others.

I shared the findings with my friends and family.

I teach my son using the techniques in the book.

It delves deep into the science of self-control and habit formation.

Drawing from her popular course at Stanford University, McGonigal offers a practical guide to understanding our willpower.

Summary

The book is structured around a ten-week course, each chapter exploring different facets of willpower.

For example: why we give in to temptations, how stress impacts our self-control, and the role of self-compassion in improving our resilience.

McGonigal combines cutting-edge research from psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral economics with real-life anecdotes and practical exercises.

For a concrete thinker like myself, it was easy to understand.

Key Insights

Understanding Willpower: McGonigal explains that willpower is not just a moral virtue but a biological function that can be trained and strengthened, much like a muscle.

Mindfulness Matters: Practicing mindfulness can significantly boost our willpower by helping us stay focused and calm under pressure.

The Power of Self-Compassion: Being kind to ourselves when we fail is crucial for long-term success. Self-criticism can undermine our willpower and lead to a cycle of failure and guilt.

Stress and Self-Control: Stress depletes our willpower, making us more susceptible to temptations. Learning to manage stress is key to maintaining self-control.

The Role of Dopamine: McGonigal discusses how dopamine, often referred to as the “reward hormone,” influences our behavior and motivation. Understanding this can help us recognize and manage our cravings.

The Willpower Reserve: Willpower is a finite resource that can be depleted. McGonigal introduces the concept of “willpower reserve,” explaining how taking breaks and practicing self-care can replenish our self-control.

Future Self: Connecting with our future self can enhance our motivation to make better long-term decisions. Visualizing the benefits of our actions helps us stay committed to our goals.

License to Sin: The phenomenon where doing something good gives us a “license” to indulge in bad behavior. McGonigal explains how to avoid this trap and stay on track with our goals.

Social Influences: Our environment and the people around us significantly impact our willpower. By creating a supportive environment and surrounding ourselves with positive influences, we can strengthen our self-control.

Delayed Gratification: Mastering the art of delayed gratification is crucial for achieving long-term goals. McGonigal offers strategies to improve our ability to wait for larger rewards rather than giving in to immediate temptations.

Small Wins: Celebrating small victories can boost our motivation and reinforce positive behavior. McGonigal emphasizes the importance of acknowledging progress, no matter how minor it may seem.

Mental Fatigue: Mental fatigue can impair our decision-making abilities and reduce our willpower. McGonigal provides tips on how to manage mental exhaustion and maintain self-control throughout the day.
