Every week at the Daily Digi, we dedicate Sunday to an un-digi topic. It can be anything from couponing to birthday cakes and crafts to smartphone cases.

Today I was thinking about laundry. I’m a mom to two little kids, so it’s a near-daily chore for me. I’ll bet it’s a regular item on your to-do list, as well.

I line dry my laundry as much as possible. Beyond the fact that it environmentally friendly and gentle on clothes, seeing laundry on the line is very satisfying to me. I stand in my window and watch it blow in the breeze. It’s oddly relaxing to watch nature take care of drying the clothes. There is nothing for me to do beyond pegging the clothes on the line. The drying just happens.

Although I line dry almost everything, my favourite item is bed sheets. The smell of linens dried on the line is heavenly! On the days when my sheets are freshly line dried, I find myself coming up with reasons why I should go to sleep at 8:30 pm. It’s just too tempting to snuggle into those comfortable and fresh sheets.

I’m so into the smell of air-dried laundry that I even line dry in the winter!

(Although they do need a 10 minute fluff in the dryer afterwards to soften them up!)

Sometimes, laundry on the line can add a touch of excitement to an otherwise regular day. We’ve found that our family can really pull together to get laundry off the line quickly when the wind starts picking up, indicating an imminent rain storm. I pull the laundry off the line and toss them at my husband to pat down into the hamper. My daughter helps gather clothespins. We can have a load off in under a couple of minutes, when it’s needed.

Even if we’re too late, and the laundry on the line gets wet – no harm done. I just leave it and know that it will dry eventually. The sun always comes out again.

Now, if only I enjoyed the actual folding and putting away part of laundry!

I love using online resources for creative and easy photo editing and most of these sources have great tools for making collages as well. There are many reasons why you might enjoy making collages such as:

• Creating a unique image to use on a digital scrapbook page
• Combining several photos into one image to use for a blog post
• Recapping an event with multiple photos in a small space
• Sharing several images at once in a social media environment (instagram, twitter, facebook, etc.)
• Compiling many photos into one image to use on a photobook page
• Just for fun!

With Memorial Day coming up, I’ve been thinking about our 2012 summer trip to Washington D.C. I still have so many photos that have not made it into my albums yet because I took hundreds of pictures! I decided to pull together some of my favorites to create a collage.

Here’s a collage I created with Pic Monkey. There are many free options to use on the site, and even more if you become a paid member for as little as $2.75 a month. I used a template under the “square deal” collage category for this one.

Even using a free collage, I was able to save a full size 3600×3600 resolution of my creation. Now all I have to do is print it out for my travel album!

I tried several other free online photo collage sites and I honestly can’t recommend very many of them in comparison to Pic Monkey. The other sites don’t have as many free options and it is much more difficult to get your photos imported as well as saving the finished collage to a high resolution file suitable for digi scrapping. Pic Monkey is my go-to source for creating collages online.

Here’s another collage I created with a free template at Pic Monkey in the “Biggie Smalls” category.

I went ahead and upgraded to the Royale membership and I created this collage using a Jigsaw template.

It is also super easy to create a collage image to use as a facebook timeline cover. They do the sizing for you!

There are also other sizes available under the “cards” category such as 5”x7” which would be great to use in those pocket scrapping albums!

I love that it is so easy to change the spacing between photos and you can even round the corners with the slide of a button!

I had been a paper scrapper/card maker/stamper since I was really young. I wanna say maybe 10 years old? When I got to be a little older I got more into scrapping I would get burned out really fast. Having to drag everything out and put everything away and the mess!! Oh man, the mess. I just couldn’t take it anymore. Then at a ScrapExpo in early 2009 I came across someone teaching digital scrapbooking. When I first saw it I remember thinking how silly it was. There was nothing to touch on the page. No depth. But as we walked around the expo the thought of being able to still scrap but not have the mess kept eating away in the back of my mind. So I went back and bought a book on how to get started in digital scrapbooking. I started that very day and never looked back! Once I got the hang of it I started applying for creative teams. Eventually I found ScrapMatters and got accepted to their Creative Team. It was a dream come true! In 2011, ScrapMatters had thier Design Star competition and I decided to compete on a whim. I ended up loving it and a couple months later became a designer at my favorite store and my digi-home.

There are a lot of things that inspire me to create. A photo, a color palette, a specific request, etc. I can find inspiration just about anywhere. I love creating things in photoshop because it amazes me that it can actually be done. Who knew that the awesome things that come in these kits that we love can be created on a computer? It is crazy.

Computer: I have a 17″ Macbook Pro with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7 processor running Mountain Lion v10.8.2. It is awesome =)

Program: I use Photoshop CS5 for designing. When I scrap I always create my layout in Photoshop Elements 8 first. I love the project bin and have no idea how I could scrap a page without it.

Camera: I have a Sony a350 DSLR that has been my camera for the past couple years. This past Christmas I got the Sony NEX-5r and I am in LOVE with it!

Anything Else: I do have a Bamboo Create tablet but I rarely use it. Most people find it funny that I don’t use a mouse either. I do all my scrapping and designing using the trackpad on my laptop.

One of my favorite tips to share with people is a really simple one but can make a huge impact on your photos. Once you have your photo in photoshop, duplicate the layer and change the blend mode to screen. Now duplicate that layer and change the blend mode to soft light. Play around with the opacity on both the screen and soft light layers till you are in love with your photo! I do this ALL the time!!

It is really funny that this is one of my favorite kits because in general, I really am not a fan of birthday kits. But once I got started on this one I just couldn’t stop! Birthday kits are seriously soo fun to make. I was inspired and chose the colors based on some photos from my boyfriend’s 24th birthday. I blindfolded him, stuck him in the car and had my whole family meet us at Chuck E. Cheese for a big old surprise party. It was awesome and ridiculous. The colors in this kit fit the photos perfectly.

My most popular product comes from the current Instagram obsession. I think it was definitely one of the fastest and easiest kits I have ever made. I was inspired by wanting to make every photo I own square and in my opinion, you can never have too many “camera” related products.

We talked last week on The Digi Show about Adobe Creative Cloud, the new changes, and the impact it could have on digi scrappers. We talked more about it this week (that show will be released tomorrow or Thursday).  In a nutshell: Adobe is moving their Creative Suite of products to the cloud in a subscription based format.

More on the subscriptions at the end of this post, but one of the things that has been lost in all of hullabaloo about the subscriptions, are the new features that were announced. Remember my post about why I don’t delete photos and the video I shared about upcoming Adobe technology?  It’s HERE (click through to site to see videos):

Here are few other features in Photoshop CC I think digital scrappers will LOVE:

• editable rounded rectangles (you can draw the rounded rectangle and then change the radius on canvas, without having to redraw it)
• the ability to edit multiple paths at one time
• improved anti-aliasing options for type (yay!)
• conditional actions (these use if/then statements and this will be BIG if it works like we are hoping)
• intelligent upsampling (resizing an image up without losing quality)
• Upright Tool that will automatically straighten photos

What does Creative Cloud mean?

The Adobe Creative Cloud products will no longer be sold in boxed sets (as individual products or as a suite). If you want to use Photoshop, you will have to subscribe.  There’s a lot of information out there on this topic, but I found this post by Scott Kelby to be the most helpful and factual (including cost analysis to see if it’s right for you).

I’ll be honest and I’ve been on Creative Cloud for almost a year now and really like it, but I use multiple Adobe products (three on a regular basis). I mentioned in The Digi Show that the only time it’s been a problem for me was when I was sitting on a tight deadline and for some reason, it was saying my payment hadn’t gone through, so it wouldn’t let me work. My payment had gone through and after several closing/openings of the program and a restart, it finally started communicating with Adobe and I was able to finish my work.

I have seen a lot of unhappy digital scrapbookers that use Photoshop and only Photoshop and don’t want to subscribe because they will end up paying more. I think we will see some digital scrappers that will downgrade to Photoshop Elements. I also think we will see some scrappers that will upgrade to Photoshop because the monthly payment is much easier to swallow than a the larger cost to buy it outright all at once.

Either way, it will be interesting to see what Adobe does and how they respond. If you are one of the scrappers that is outraged (or just upset) by this, there is a petition on that you can sign.

About linking and grouping layers

In the layer palette, multiple layers can be selected at one time. On a Windows computer, hold down SHIFT while clicking on each layer you want to select. (On a Mac, COMMAND+click to select multiple layers.)

Linking

Layers can be linked together to form a relational bond between them which allows you to apply certain changes to all the grouped layers, like:

• Moving all the linked layers at the same time
• Expanding or contracting (transforming) all the linked layers at the same time

Linked layers can be identified by the little chain link icon beside each layer.

The chain link can be toggled on or off by clicking on it.

Linked layers do not have to be sequential in the layers palette. For example, you could link layers 3, 9, 11, and 147 and it would not alter where they appear in the layers palette.

Linking works in both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.

Grouping

Grouping is available in Photoshop.

Grouping layers provides you with the option of collapsing or expanding a little “folder” of layers in the layers palette. This is useful to reduce the number of layers visible in the layers palette list. (Collapsing a layer group does not make them invisible on the actual layout.) You can group individual layers or even group layers and other groups together. With groups, you can do things like:

• Move all the grouped layers at the same time
• Expand or contracting (transforming) all the grouped layers at the same time
• Apply drop shadows to all the grouped layers at the same time
• Apply other styles to all the grouped layers at the same time

Remember, layers stay grouped or linked until you ungroup or unlink them. That means that you can work on other parts of the layout and come back to the grouping later and it will still work. (However, if the layers selected aren’t grouped or linked, as soon as you click off of them, they will no longer be related to one another and changes won’t apply to all of them at the same time.)

Example

Let’s start with a template, like this one from The Daily Digi’s My Life In Print member exclusive kit:

On a Windows computer, hold down SHIFT while clicking on each layer you want to select. I’m going to work on the smaller photo cluster on the right-hand side of the page.

You can see that the selected layers turn blue in the layers palette and the selection box on the layout expands to encompass all the selected layers.

Select Layer+Group Layers or hold down CTRL+G to create a group. You can also click on the the little folder icon at the bottom of the layers palette.

OR

Right click on the layers and select “Link Layers” from the menu.

Once a group is made, all items in the group are listed under the Group heading (which can be changed to anything you want) and the group list can be expanded (shown below) or hidden from view. Hiding group layers is a handy way of simplifying the layer palette to make it easier to work and find what you need.

Now that the layers are grouped, we can use the move tool (M) to move all the layers in the group at one time.

(For the screen shots below, “grouped layers” are shown, but the ability to move multiple layers is the same as if the layers were linked instead.)

And that’s it! A handy tool to use, especially when you’re digi scrapping a page with many layers.

I am a 33 year old Oregonian that’s been designing in some medium or another my entire adult life. After leaving my position as art director for a garment decorating and design company in my late twenties I decided to share my scrappin’ goodies and see if anyone else liked them. I’ve been happily designing since.

I live with my hairdressing fiance, 2 teenage daughters, and 2 “preteen” sons, our family of 4 chihuahuas, and a ball python (Jack Snakington). In my (dwindling) spare time my fiance and I also busy ourselves in our basement studio playing with glass, making commissioned mosaics and stained & fused glass pieces. I also have a major fixation on nail polish which has resulted in an ever growing collection that’s begun to take over…. Glitter…. sparkly….

Scuse the bad lighting, our studio isn’t the best lit area in the house… As you can see, this is a major work in progress but this is what I’m working on outside of digi right now. It’s MASSIVE. It’s about 4ft long and 2ft wide and definitely the biggest mosaic I’ve worked on in about a year. You can tell how wishy washy I get with all the layers of scribbles. LOL There’s more work done that you can really see as I’ve built up several portions with cheapy clear glass so that the finished mosaic will be dimensional. The center of the “sun” there is built up and I’ve just begun laying the flaming red glass in a circular pattern – it’ll take thousands and thousands of bits not much larger than an eighth of an inch. Eek! It’ll be awful to grout but amazing!

Those are two of The Hairdresser’s ready to grout mosaics next to it – he just completed a whole series of suns. They’re gorgeous in the light.


Long story short, I took a chance and entered a designer contest in the Spring of ’09, made it to the final round (with a kit I still love) but fortunately didn’t get a designer spot. I’m glad I didn’t because it forced me to find my own way. Soon after I took a spot at Polka Dot Plum, which at the time was months from opening. My very first store opened September of 2009 and I’ve loved every second!

I miss dressing up for work every day and feeling all respectable and grown up but love the challenge of starting something new all the time. I’m very excited and fortunate to be a resident designer at The Lilypad. It’s such an inspired place!

Phew – it really depends? Sometimes it comes out of nowhere, sometimes it’s color, sometimes it’s a photo I can’t find a kit to scrap… sometimes it’s just a feeling I want to put to “paper.” To be totally honest though? It never ends up where I mean for it to.

Computer: I am a PC girl (on purpose!)…. I’ve clung to Windows 7 for dear life. Why? I resist change!
I have nowhere near enough RAM and probably never will. I have a problem with leaving everything – PS, AI, Firefox, 20 folders, etc – open and wondering why everything slows down. *shrug* And my monitor is one of the best things my guy ever got me. It’s flat and wide and perty.
Program: I use Illustrator and Photoshop CS5 primarily. I have the upgrades sitting on my desk but like I said above…. I resist change.
Camera: Hmmmm… it’s across the room as I type this and I don’t want to go get it. LOL It’s white and I’m ashamed to admit that’s the reason I picked it. But, even though my fancy white camera has fancy specs I steal The Hairdresser’s smart phone for it’s camera for extraction pics and everything else. It’s just easier. And it takes pretty wicked photos!
Anything Else: I do have a Bamboo tablet but I forget to use it. I’m so used to mouse drawing that it seems quicker without. I use my cruddy, dusty scanner and a Sharpie alot, too!

Be fearless!! You don’t know if something will work if you don’t try it, right?

As far as designing goes… Learn a million ways to recolor and item early on. Don’t rely on the slider and don’t rely on color overlays. Play with exposure, vibrancy, color balance, selective color, etc Also – my biggest time saver? I automate anything I do more than once. Learn to record your steps and you’ll save yourself hours and hours of frustration.

Oh, wow! This is tough. It’s a total toss-up so I’ll pick the whole Chin Up collection. I was a little melancholy when I started brainstorming it and I think it evolved from there. The palette – which I wish I could use again – is actually the third palette I started with…. I do that alot.

I love it because it just came together effortlessly. I didn’t have to force it and I love the extras it inspired as well!


It’s always different that what I think SHOULD be my most popular product, you know? It seems to be any of the Cliff Notes collection with the More Smarter volume in the lead. Probably because it was first. They are pretty cool though. Am I allowed to say that?
