On a cold rainy Sunday afternoon in December, if your five year old tells you she wants to have a tea-party, what would you do? Well, you throw an afternoon tea party just for you two! How? I am going share with you all right here right now! Afternoon tea-parties are perfect for having your girl-friends over or for your entire family or for only you and your love!

Lately, I have been into all that "English Afternoon Tea"! It is just too pretty, elegant, yet so simple to set up! I bought few cute tea-sets as well! Of course, you will need one to throw a tea-party! Follow along to know what else you will need! By the way, having that three-tier cake stand for sandwich display, is not at all mandatory! Previously, I have done tea-parties without it! It is traditionally how English people display their bite-sized afternoon sandwiches during tea-time.

You will Need:

A cute Tea-set

Tea cups and saucers (could be a set or not, be creative; mix and match)

Bite sized sandwiches

Making of these sandwiches are very simple! There are tons of recipe out their online (google it). After trying different recipes, I have found five/six which are my favorite and I also add some twist of Indian spice to them! They are delicious. However, we are talking about lots of calories here!

Bite-sized desserts

If you could make or bake english desserts that will be great! I just thought, I will use what I had in my home as desserts. Luckily, I had some bite-sized cupcakes and french macaroons! If you use readymade aka store bought desserts, it will be hassle free and quick! Although, this is inspired by English afternoon tea but you can totally make it your own and use whatever you want as desserts.

Some Decoration

Such as a candle or two, some floral arrangement or display.

Last but not the least, you favorite Tea!

Use either loose leaf or tea bag!

Sugar

Milk

And, some empty stomachs :)

And Voila!

To make sandwiches and to set up everything it took me little bit more than an hour!

Beautiful Peaks of Otter: A day Trip destination in Central Virginia, USA

Before we all get sunk in the cold winter, warmth of fall beauty gives us enough strength to survive it. Of course, my favorite two seasons are fall and spring. Nature is beautiful the way it is; however in spring with newly blossomed buds and in fall with changing color of leaves it turns into heaven right here!

Few weeks ago, we went to visit Peaks of Otter, Virginia. With lake, mountain, fall color, it was an all in one package. Fall color was at its best that time and we had an awesome day there.

To plan a trip to peaks of otter, visit there website here. We had lunch at Peaks of Otter Lodge Dining room! This dining room has an awesome view of the mountain and the lake. For a fine southern buffet/menu, this could be your destination! If you want to hike to sharp top mountain, you can start from here, too. Many picnic areas are around as well. You can expect to see some wild life like deer etc too!

How do I maintain my current weight: Controlling Carbohydrate intake

Hello there Beautiful ladies!!!

Hope everyone is doing great! This morning when I was going to drop A at school, I heard a funny discussion on Radio regarding "National Junk Food Day" in USA and yes it is today, 21st July! I have been planning on doing this post for quite sometime now. After hearing that discussion, decided to do it today! Last time, when I did my pregnancy weight-lost post, it was appreciated by many of our readers. As you can see it is not exactly a post about eating junk, or loosing weight; it is about controlling our craving of carbs (Totally understand, it is a challenge we born with as we are Indian.) and having a good dietary habit. I am no expert on the field; however, I am going to share a few everyday practices I follow that sure helps me in the long run to maintain my weight.

Balanced diet and Potion Control

I am proud to be an Indian. I am proud that it is so diverse in every possible way! I love our fashion; I love our foods. However, I hate our food habits. It is all about carbohydrates. Being a Bengali, it is almost impossible to survive even one day with out a dose of white rice. I tried to cut it off altogether from our diet only to find how unfeasible it is. Then I figured few simple ways to keep it in my grip.

1. Instead of white rice, try brown rice. Even better if you can have whole wheat chapatis instead of any rice. So basically, we try to rotate.

2. Try to control your potions everyday. I have no more than three cups of carbs every day. On the special days, little bit more.

3. If you have to have white rice, instead of using rice cooker, use traditional way of rice cooking in which you can strain out the extra starch before you eat it.

4. try to eat a balanced diet with lots of protein and just about right amount of carbs and fats. So you will not crave for junk.

Avoid added sugar

Stop buying sodas, juices chips etc. Stop buying anything that might have added sugar or salt in it; such as cakes, muffins, cookies. We buy these only if we have to throw a party or if we are having friends over for casual get together. Parents, stop eating the icing on the birthday cake. With A growing up, now we attend at least 3-4 birthday parties a month.

Reduce craving for fries and chips with desiccated veggies. They are Yummy too.

Do not stay empty stomach

They say, if you go to grocery empty stomach, chances are you will fill your cart will junk or unhealthy food. So make sure every time you go to grocery, you are not starving. Same goes, if you are hungry chances are you will start binging on unhealthy stuffs. Therefore, don't let go yourself empty stomach at all.

Controlling carbohydrate craving

Even after you do all the right things, you will desire for junk. Every one does, me too. I do trick myself with this and I try to choose the healthier version:

If, I crave chocolate, I go for dark chocolate;

If, I want to have soda or juice, I drink water with crushed ice. I make homemade lemonade, where I can control how much sugar to be added. I make fresh mango, watermelon, orange etc juices at home too.

And, as mentioned earlier chips are replaced with desiccated organic veggies and candies are replaced with desiccated organic fruits.

However, once in a while everyone should have guilty pleasure and indulge yourself in real thing ;)

Working Out

Last but not the least, of course. What else should I mention about benefit of working out? It is no secret. We just have to follow what we believe and have to be patient.

Believe it or not the inspiration of this outfit came from the earrings I am wearing! Can you imagine it is only for $2.88 from Walmart? As soon as I saw it in the store I had to grab it!

The crochet tunic top I am wearing here is almost 8 years old! It is from Debenhams, UK! I dragged it out and washed and wore just so I can wear my new earrings with it!

The following is the description of the look:

Black and white striped Maxi dress and on top the orange tunic together with a belt! For hair, I did my favorite and my go-to messy-bun, for makeup I had my eyes done; you will find a tutorial of similar eye makeup here and used an orange lipstick! Yes, it is an orange lipstick, though it looks different in the pictures here.

Hope everyone is doing great! After long time, I got to wear a saree! If you follow thedocndiva from the beginning, you already know how much I love to wear saree! Anyway, when I got a chance to wear one again last weekend, I went all out. I did my eyes, my makeup and of course, I took my time to get ready! Yes! it takes time guys... a lot, specially wearing the saree part!

So, this is a chanderi saree! I bought it from India last year! Last diwali, when I went to India, it was totally in trend. However, when it comes to Saree, I go with my hunch, rather than what's in. Still I like this sarees a lot and bought two!

I styled this look with taupe eyes, nude lips and classic bengali jewelry! Although, it was meant to be a traditional look with an elegant drape and non-comtemporary jewelries, adding the mirrored aviator (I know it matches my saree perfectly) shades and the fringe bag have given the look a modern aspect.

And have you noticed my dual french manicure with red and white: This manicure is super easy, this is probably the quickest nail-art I have ever done!

Black kohl

The first one to own! It can take you a long way! You can use it as eye shadow, eye liner, and of course, as a kohl pencil! What's the difference? Well, that could be another whole post! Anyway, When I say that I mean, it has amazing maneuvering quality and blendability! As a beginners' eye product, my vote goes with this one.

Mascara

Next one is Mascara definitely! It can really make a world of difference! Even if you don't have time to do anything else, wear only mascara! Still, I am putting it as number two, after Black Kohl because application of it could be a little trickier; especially if you are just starting to play with eye makeup products... Kohl is the best way to start practicing something regarding eye makeup! Learn eye makeup basics for beginners' here.

Concealer

Well, wearing the kohl and mascara make the huge difference no doubt, however, to make it more prominent you have to cover those under eye patches! May be, your dark circles are not as visible as many others, still using a concealer will make your day! Choosing a foundation that matches your skin tone could be tricky; however choosing a concealer is much easier I believe. You have to go for a shade that is clearly at least one shade or two lighter than your complexion!

A Red Lipstick

This can transfer you from none to "Glam" just like that. You have to get ready in no time; wear the red lipstick that suits you the best! The trick is you have to wear it properly! Learn it here. If there is no way you can wear a red lip-color, choose a reddish brown or maroon tone!

A Nude Lipstick

Many of us think, if a lipstick says it is nude, it will be ok to use as nude lipstick on everybody! Although, those nude shades will somewhat look good on most of us, still it's better to find a proper nude to your lip color! Not necessarily a nude shade for one will be nude for you too!

Blush

A natural looking blush, that one can wear all day everyday! A blush that will give a glow from within! This blush won't be to hard to apply for beginners because of its natural shade! Two examples of that kind of blushes are in above picture; they mostly suit every skin tone and give natural finish!

The Glammys are a pink carpet event to celebrate entrepreneurial young women making a difference in their communities. The six individual award winners will each receive a $1,000 scholarship funded by the W.H.O (Women Helping Others) Foundation. Four winners will receive the “Glammy Award Scholarship” and two other winners will receive The Daniel and Lucille Valerio Outstanding Volunteer Award and The College Chapter Glammy Award, respectively. As people age, the amount of meaningful contact they experience decreases, particularly for those residing in eldercare facilities. Saláta apó Fréska Froúta: A Fresh Fruit Salad Recipe

Hi Beautiful friends! Hope everyone is enjoying the spring outside!

We went to strawberry picking yesterday with Auripra! Therefore, was craving for something delicious for lunch today with fresh fruit of course including the fresh strawberries from yesterday! Let me tell you this as a side note: this was the first time we ever went to pick fresh fruit and it's amazing; can not explain how juicy and tasteful and fresh they are! Anyway, here comes the recipe of the fresh fruit salad I made for lunch today.

Ingredients:

Fresh fruits:

I used

Pineapple

Strawberry

Mandarin oranges (canned)

Carrots

Sliced to your wish,however, try to keep the pieces in similar shapes and sizes! This will make it look good :)

Greens:

Cucumber and

Romaine heart

Others:

Dried cranberries

California walnuts (unsalted)

And

Raspberry vinaigrette (salad dressing)

Saláta Apó Fréska Froúta Récipè:

1. Chop the romaine heart first and lay on your plate!

2. Start chopping the fruits! If you had already chopped them, place them on top of the green! See the picture below! I tried to alternate them color wise so it looks nice!

3. Add cucumber, dried cranberries and chopped walnut!

4. Have the salad dressing in a small bowl or salad dressing server! Add and mix it as you need.

5. Well, having tea with fruit salad, I would not recommend; may be strawberry smoothie would be a better fit! However, I missed my morning tea today, so needed the caffeine boost!

National Cherry Blossom Festival 2015: Part 2

When I start talking about Philadelphia and our days in Philadelphia I just can't stop! Another great thing about Philadelphia beside it's restaurants and shopping options, was the bus service to many places! You might wonder why I'm talking about this today! Well, this is not the first time we went for cherry blossom, we came twice before from philly even before Auripra was born and cherished the natural beauty! Auripra was not there, so of course it was hassle free. However, I believe now, it was more so because we did not drive there.. We took a bus from china town Philly, it was just few blocks from our apartment in center city Philly and we took the last bus literally for coming back! Obviously, we did not realize how much pain it could be to drive to a city during a major festival and look for parking around the festivities! Well we realized that this time! We had super fun, but the crowd and traffic jam was not fun at all!
Anyway, The National Cherry Blossom Festival is a spring celebration in Washington, D.C., commemorating the March 27, 1912, gift of Japanese cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo City to the city of Washington. [source]

Hi Beautiful! Today we are gonna talk about planning your disney magic kingdom tour with your toddlers. We are doing one park at a time. We spent Auripra's third birthday in Disney World, Orlando. Planning a trip with toddler is a challenge always, and in our case the most difficult thing was feeding her. She was not at all into outside food at that time; so according to our plan, we booked a suite where they have kitchen and sitting area with the room! And, that worked perfectly. I cooked rice and egg for her in the hotel and brought the food in the park with us. The bottom line is you do not want a hungry child roaming around the park and throwing tantrum all over. If they eat pizza etc, you are saved! You will have plenty of options inside the park, otherwise pack your babies' favorite snacks or food, something she or he will eat without fuss.

Early Bird

Even if you are not a morning person, try to be one on the day of park hopping. Put the kid in bed and make them sleep early the night before so they can wake early and happy too. Another challenge with kids is getting out of the house or the hotel. Remembering and packing everything... takes for ever and inevitably you will forget one of the most important things. Believe me, been there and done that. Make a list of what you will need absolutely in the park and then include few not so important stuffs (if space permits in the back-pack). Oh Yes! Backpack is the way to go. The most hassle-free and your hands will stay free too. So, pack stuff according to your list and have breakfast before you start. And, start by 8am in the morning or as early as possible. Park opens at 9am. From hotel to the park it takes at least an hour, or almost an hour if you stay in the disney resort hotels. We started around 8:15 from the hotel and by the time we entered the park, it was 9:30 and immensely crowded.

BYO

Bring your own. If he or she still needs stroller for getting around intermittently, bring your stroller! Even if you can rent from the park... they are not at all comfortable. Unless you just want something for older kids who does not use or have a stroller currently, you can rent the shaded double or single ones.

Do the Homework

Go through the park time table from the disney website. Then you can see the schedule of a special something that you might want to do. Like breakfast with characters or photograph with characters, lunch or dinner with characters, they all have their own timing and calendar on their website. Make your customized schedule. Like for us, she was all about Mickie and Minnie; So meeting them was in our first preference. See the link for characters experience in the park.

Do the Rides

Even though, they are not allowed in most of the popular rides, there are many really great attractions for toddlers. Follow the link below:

And, the good thing is: you don't have to buy fast-pass for those rides, usually they are not as crowded as the popular ones, unless you are visiting during christmas or new year or in other special occasion. You can always do other rides as long as you are not taking your babies with you. If you have any friend or any family is visiting with you, may be you and you better half can enjoy a ride together too.

Take Golden Pictures

Of course you are going to take lots of picture. However, you have to take one shot, in a particular spot at a particular time of the day. It is going to be the most beautiful memory, i am telling you. Come back in front of the cinderella castle on the main street and wait for the sunset... just like 30/40 minutes before sunset, it is the golden light for taking pictures. Take a family shot right there. You will cherish the outcome your entire life. These parks are photogenic.

Two Must Dos

It was a trip for Auripra's birthday, so the entire time, we wanted to do something that she or a toddler will certainly enjoy. And, the must two of them in your list will be the night parade and the fireworks and music show! We got the best place to see the show. Yes you have to go early and grab the place yourself. Will do another post regarding these shows. In a line, you must not want to miss these shows specially if you are visiting there with toddler. They will love it. I know Auripra did.

Cherry Blossom Washington DC Part One: Outfits

Hi Beautiful!!! Last weekend we went to National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC. Today I am just going to share the outfits. I am going to share Auripra's outfit too, because in the Washington Zoo and in the festival, many strangers just talked to us to say how much they liked her outfit for the spring time.

Spring 2015 Nail-trend: How to Do Two two-toned French Tip

I am sure we all had some resolutions for 2015. I had too. One of them was to start doing my nails again. It's not that I stopped doing it altogether! However, I was not as prompt as I used to be when Auripra was much younger. Because, she started asking for coloring her finger and toe nails herself; so, I had to stop doing it in front of her. Thanks god, now we can communicate! More importantly, I can negotiate with her. All the moms know, what I mean ;). Anyway, this is my first nail-art of 2015. A very trendy, very simple and quick. "Two toned french tip" is going to be totally on trend in spring-summer 2015. Although, on the runway, the designers had used a color along with white to do two-toned manicures; I thought it will be more fun to use two very springy/summery colors to flaunt the look. What do you think?

The colors I used.

Apply base Coat.

Apply base color (any neutral color), two coats.

On both hands.

Let it dry for good 10-15 minutes.

Using the normal nail-polish brush, apply the pink color along the tip of your nails. Try to keep your hand steady during this step. I accept, this calls for some practice. You can also use those French-strips etc. available for doing french tip to aid the process.

Using a striper nail-brush, draw the teal lines at the base of the pink lines.

And, Done!

Night Out In New York City: An Experience

When it's all about celebration...

Hello 2015!!!
Hope you all had very exciting last day of 2014 and very memorable first day of 2015.
Although, the doc was working on both days, I had really exciting time with my friends.
Today, I'm really exhilarated to introduce another new section in 'thedocndiva', called "Voyage". It will contain, obviously, pictures and experiences from tours and travels we (thedocndiva) did as a couple over the past years.
This is the first post of 2015. So, wanted to post something that was all about celebration. And, thought sharing the night-out experience in the city that never sleeps, would be perfect fit for the topic.

In June 2013, when Doc completed his Specialization training (Fellowship), we were not sure how to celebrate it! With Auripra around everywhere, it was just not possible to do something as a couple. First, we did a one week tour to Cape-Cod, MA and Boston, MA. It was a great family vacation with lots of nature and scenery and greenery and of course history. However, after coming back, we realized it is New-York City we needed visit to celebrate it in our way.

Still, we were not sure how! Then suddenly to our rescue, my mother came to visit us. We did not delay a bit. We planned our five day tour to NYC in September and the Doc booked this #1 Nightlife tour (according to tripadvisor.com ) called "Take Me Out NYC". We did the "Mixology" tour. It was indeed an experience.

It was NYC, so we had to shop anyway. However, we shopped specially for the occasion.

It was getting chilly at night. Therefore, having the jacket was a smart idea.

On that very night, At 9 pm, we were greeted and started from the location that already were given to us. When we reached there, a beautiful modern stretch black Lincoln Limo was already waiting for us.

The ride was great. Our host made us different cocktails in between our destinations.

The first destination was Experimental Cocktail Club. Very beautiful and classy atmosphere and the cocktail I had with gin and vodka was delicious. It was strong.

We arrived at our second destination, our tour-guide already had told us that it would be a roof top bar. We took an elevator up to RT (rooftop) level and we were escorted out to a private booth awaiting us on the rooftop patio, right beside the Empire State Building. It was Refinery Rooftop Bar.

A simple plant - Taro Leaves (Maan Kochu) very common in India, found its place as an interior decorating plant in this upscale bar in Manhattan.

The third and final destination was The BackRoom Bar. It was already midnight and we wanted to spend sometime in Times square at night. So, went in to the last bar and left in few minutes; so did not have any photo of that one.

This was Times Square after midnight.
