Bethel Woods Center for the Arts Announces Historic Preservation Fundraising Campaign for the National Register Historic Site

BETHEL, N.Y., Aug. 11, 2017 -- In celebration of the 48th Anniversary of the 1969 Woodstock Music & Art Fair, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts – the not-for-profit cultural center and museum located at the fabled festival's historic site – has announced a Crowdrise fundraising campaign to support new preservation and interpretation efforts.

On the weekend of August 15-17 in 1969, half-a-million people gathered on Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel, N.Y. for the Woodstock festival, a three-day event that has come to represent a generation, and the power of peace, love and music. This watershed moment in American history continues to be a beacon of hope for people of all generations, and its historic site attracts visitors from around the globe.

As the 50th Anniversary approaches, Bethel Woods continues to carry on that spirit, while preserving and interpreting its historic site. The organization has embarked on a series of historic preservation projects that will enhance the visitor experience, restore and open to the public new areas of the festival site, and introduce immersive technologies that will immerse guests in the site's history.

In support of these projects, Bethel Woods launched an online campaign via Crowdrise, to raise the funds needed for the Bindy Bazaar Trails Project, which will restore the forested trails of the festival's marketplace, providing access to walking trails including reproductions of the iconic signage that proclaimed the "High Way," "Groovy Way," and "Gentle Path" in the woods. In the spirit of community that permeated Woodstock, Bethel Woods is raising the funds needed for this project via the online fundraising platform, Crowdrise with a goal of $25,000 - seeking individual donations starting at just $10. To be a part of preserving this important piece of our cultural heritage, please visit crowdrise.com/preservingwoodstock.

Bethel Woods' CEO Darlene Fedun said, "At its heart Woodstock was about the peaceful community that grew out of quite difficult circumstances, working together and sharing what they had with each other – and so is this fundraiser. This is a true example of how each of us, when united as a community, can make a much greater positive impact together, and through this fundraiser can contribute to preserving a treasured piece of history for future generations."

Recently, the Woodstock site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, formally acknowledging the significance of its heritage and setting in motion continued preservation efforts. Located 90 miles from New York City, Bethel Woods also features an 800-acre campus including a Pavilion amphitheater with a capacity of 15,000, an intimate indoor performance space, arts and humanities programs for all ages, and the award-winning Museum at Bethel Woods. Michael Jackson's Thriller 3D World Premiere At The Venice Film Festival 2017

2017-08-08T08:00:00.000-07:00

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 7, 2017 -- Michael Jackson's Thriller 3D, long rumored and highly anticipated by fans, will make its world premiere at the 74th Venice Film Festival 2017, announced the Estate of Michael Jackson today. Additional media assets: www.mjthriller.net/

Creating Michael Jackson's Thriller 3D, the original iconic short film, directed by John Landis and written by Landis and Michael Jackson, was not reedited or recut in any way. Rather Optimum Productions brought Landis in and together they supervised an elaborate and labor intensive process that began with the original 35mm film negative from Michael's archives and resulted in a 3D conversion of the acclaimed film using the latest available technology.

To complement the enhanced visuals, all of the audio, including Michael's music, Elmer Bernstein's score and the sound effects, has also been updated to 5.7, 7.1 and Atmos standards in order to create the highest quality audio and visual experience for in theater viewing which is how Michael and Landis intended the film to be enjoyed.

In making the announcement, John Landis said, "I am so happy to have had the chance not only to restore but enhance Michael Jackson's Thriller! We took full advantage of the remarkable advances in technology to add new dimensions to both the visual and the audio bringing it to a whole new level. Even though Thriller was shot traditionally, I was able to use the 3-D creatively. Let me just warn you, there is a rather shocking surprise in there!"

John Branca and John McClain, co-executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson said, "Michael Jackson made Thriller a rich theatrical experience: fun, funny, scary and wildly entertaining. No one before or since has made anything like it. Michael Jackson's Thriller 3D is a modern day technical enhancement of his and John Landis' original vision, and I think fans will love it."

From the beginning Michael Jackson and John Landis set out to produce Thriller with the aesthetics of a feature film. Michael was a fan of An American Werewolf In London, and called Landis to collaborate on the project. Academy Award-winning make-up artist Rick Baker was brought in for the elaborate prosthetic transformation of Michael and the cast. Michael Peters collaborated with Michael on the choreography. John Branca, Michael's attorney at the time and now the co-executor of his Estate with John McClain, worked out a deal with MTV and Showtime for a first of its kind "making of" documentary, Making of Michael Jackson's Thriller, to offset the cost of making the short film.

Thriller premiered at the AVCO Theatre in Los Angeles in 1983, and it sold out every night for three weeks. No other music film generated such excitement and has such a hold on our attention, such that more than three decades later, we all share it as a collective memory and it remains the only music video to be inducted into the elite National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. It is fitting that Michael Jackson's Thriller 3D and Making of Michael Jackson's Thriller will premiere at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, the oldest film festival in the world. The Making of Michael Jackson's Thriller was available on VHS from 1983-1990, and has never been available for purchase in any format since then. Its screening in Venice will mark the first time that the award-winning documentary has ever been shown in a theater.

Gus Summers Reviews: Anthony Montes’ One-Man Show, "Outta the Darkness Into The Light”

2016-04-29T09:00:00.000-07:00

Anthony Montes’ One-Man Show, "Outta the Darkness Into The Light,” is a semi-autobiographical work consisting of reflections on some his life-altering decisions. Written and Directed by Tony, “Outta the Darkness Into The Light” is a play that exists in the nuances of now. Depending on what occurs from one moment to the next, it can exude the dark & alarming or emanate the joyous & gleeful. In true Meisner style, it all depends on the moment.

The play begins with Tony being in a life-changing moment, then intriguingly continues with a conversation about his life with an ominous, unseen voice. The purpose of this conversation? To afford Tony his opportunity to explain certain life choices. Curiously, the choices to be discussed are selected not by the Voice, but by a panel of unknown decision makers. This panel will, after listening to his explanations, decide whether Tony must continue on the path he has laid, or if he is free to follow another one. The panel alone decides.

The questions set forth to Tony are real, taken from his own life. The explanations, too, are real. Delivered from a place of vulnerability and truth.

From last night's performance of Tony Montes' "Outta The Darkness Into The Light" #Studio4. Help decide if he should #KeepHopeAlive! For more about Times & Dates visit @mattiedaisy .

"Outta the Darkness Into The Light” is more than simply an open book of Tony's life. He does something that most performers will never do! That is, he opens up about his true self, and allows himself to lay under the scrutiny of his peers. He is judged not only for the play's sake - and duration, but also weathers the judgment meted out on his life, long after the play is finished.

"Outta the Darkness Into The Light” is a difficult play, not because of its content, but from where it emerges: An honest and open place.

For the audience, it could very well serve as a starting point for anyone willing to take inventory of their life and their life’s decisions. For Tony, it may very well provide a healing by understanding of some of the most difficult choices of his life.

You still have time to catch "Outta the Darkness Into The Light" at Studio 4 in NoHo on April 30th and May 1st. For more information, click here.

When South African Chris Bertish won the Mavericks Big Wave Invitational in 2010, he conquered the largest surf in paddle-out competition history. Now Bertish is riding an even bigger wave as the subject of an exciting and unique full-length film from Fixer Film in Cape Town, South Africa and Aurelia Productions in Santa Cruz, CA.

An internationally known – but unsponsored – big wave pioneer, Bertish will be at The Wiltern on Thursday, March 24th to speak and sign posters at an event featuring the screening of “Ocean Driven – A day that changed big wave surfing.”

“When I first realized the impact that Chris Bertish’s life makes on people, I knew it was a story that had to be told,” said the film’s producer, Santa Cruz Nadia Tarlow. “I feel privileged to be a part of it. Chris wants to show people that they can believe in and follow their dreams. The film’s purpose is to inspire and educate as well as to thrill viewers.”

“Ocean Driven” chronicles Bertish’s 15+year development as a fearless and highly skilled waterman. Big wave legends and ocean specialists from Jeff Clark, Carlos Burle, and Kelly Slater to Hanli Prinsloo and more, interviewed as part of the film, which features worldwide never-before-seen surfing footage from South Africa to Hawaii, Easter Island to Mexico, and of course, the record-setting 2010 Mavericks competition.

The film, which promises a far-reaching appeal to both surfers and non-surfers alike, is stacking up VIEWERS’ CHOICE, AUDIENCE and BEST FEATURE awards.

In covering Bertish and his 2010 Mavericks win for Zigzag surfing magazine, Anton Louw wrote, “He believes his means for achieving the remarkable is not special to him, but in a self-belief that lies dormant in all of us.”

One example of Bertish’s “achieving the remarkable” attitude: he won the grueling Mavericks competition using a borrowed wetsuit and surfboard because his own gear didn’t arrive after his 36-hour flight from South Africa.

Chris Bertish’s next adventure? He plans to stand-up paddleboard across the Atlantic Ocean.

Sunday's Super Bowl 50 was a touchdown for Lions Gate Entertainment

2016-02-08T18:00:00.000-08:00

Lions Gate Entertainment made Internet history in

Super Bowl advertising!

With the release of the trailer for Gods of Egypt, entitled “War.” Lions Gate used www.godsofegypt.movie as the landing page for the film – marking the first time that a Super Bowl advertiser used a “not-com” web ending as the landing page for their multimillion dollar ad.

Lions Gate released the ad online on February 6th, 24 hours before the game and then ran it on TV during the pregame Super Bowl coverage. Gods of Egypt, which stars Gerard Butler and is directed by Alex Proyas, will come to theaters at the end of the month. Lions Gate is the first movie studio to find value in the extension .movie. They first released “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2” in 2015 and featured www.thehungergames.movie. within its first trailer.

Jeff Davidoff, CMO of the owner and operator of .MOVIE, Donuts, Inc. can discuss how these unique, memorable, and relatively new “not-com” URLS are being utilized in TV spots to strengthen conversions to corresponding digital campaigns. The company owns and operate over 200 “not-com” domains, the most of any one registry.

‘The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of’ Returns to Movie Screens When THE MALTESE FALCON Screens Nationwide Feb. 21 and 24

2016-02-08T11:00:00.000-08:00

Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies Present the 75th Anniversary of the Film Noir Classic as Part of the ‘TCM Big Screen Classics’ Series

DENVER (Feb. 8, 2016) — Frequently considered the first – and finest – example of film noir filmmaking in Hollywood, 1941’s classic THE MALTESE FALCON will cast its mysterious shadows on the silver screen once again on Feb. 21 and Feb. 24 as part of the Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) TCM Big Screen Classics series.

In a special presentation for the 75th anniversary of the Warner Bros. classic, TCM host Ben Mankiewicz will offer all-new commentary for THE MALTESE FALCON, which will play before and after each screening. But moviegoers should take note that the opportunity to see “the stuff that dreams are made of” in theaters will be fleeting: THE MALTESE FALCON will play four times only, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. (local time) each day.

THE MALTESE FALCON will play in more than 650 theaters nationwide, offering longtime fans of the hard-boiled thriller, directed by John Huston, the rare chance to see it in theaters, while a new generation can discover the secrets of the infamous “black bird” by seeing it on the big screen for the first time.

Originally released on Oct. 3, 1941, as the nation braced itself for the possibility of war, THE MALTESE FALCON launched Huston’s directorial career with the story of high-living lowlifes who will stop at nothing to get their sweaty hands on a jewel-encrusted falcon. Detective Sam Spade, played by legendary Humphrey Bogart, wants to find out why – and who’ll take the fall for his partner’s murder.

Tickets to TCM Big Screen Classics: THE MALTESE FALCON 75th Anniversary can be purchased online from Fathom Events.

2015-11-18T15:00:00.000-08:00

"Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors" Airs December 10 at 8 p.m. CST / 9 p.m. ET on NBC

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (November 18, 2015) – There won't be a dry eye around the television when "Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors" airs December 10 on NBC. “My favorite song that I’ve ever written tells a true story from my childhood about a little coat that my mama made for me,” Parton said while introducing the clip. Parton’s mother initially sewed the the jacket as a blanket for her unborn baby, but she reworked the piece for her youngest daughter.

The upcoming prime time special, which showcases Jennifer Nettles in the role of Parton's mother, Avie, was inspired by a series of events Parton endured when she was 9 years old growing up in East Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains.

The family-oriented, faith-based movie profiles the loss of Parton’s unborn sibling, the family struggles to keep it together while grieving and the bullying the 9-year-old endured when other children criticized the quilted coat.

As one of the executive producers, Parton herself was very hands on in the making of the film – especially when it came to casting her family members.

"She told me, 'I loved your little eyes," says Lind of auditioning in front of Parton.

Jennifer Nettles plays Parton's mom, Avie Lee Parton, and Ricky Schroder plays her dad, Robert Lee Parton.

“Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors” is the first in a series of television movies developed by Parton that are expected to be released through 2016.

“Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors” airs Dec. 10 at 8 p.m. CST / 9 p.m. ET on NBC.

SURVIVOR Returns in 2016!

2015-10-20T10:30:00.000-07:00

VETERAN ROCK BAND HITS THE ROAD WITH LEAD VOCALIST CAMERON BARTON

Photo by Rick Diamond / Getty Images

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (October 20, 2015) – Legendary rock band Survivor is embarking on their next chapter in 2016 with a new member who has seemingly given new life to one of rock ‘n’ roll’s preeminent bands. With 21-year-old Nashville resident Cameron Barton assuming lead vocalist duties, the group will take their trademark arena rock sound to their loyal and devoted fan base.

Barton steps into the role of Jimi Jamison, who passed away in September 2014. Survivor is excited to have Cameron bring his powerhouse vocal style to the band’s live shows. “He’s great,” says the band’s Frankie Sullivan. “After hearing him, I was in Nashville within twenty four hours. I was in the studio with him about a day later. I stayed with him for about four days, and put him through the ringer. He just kept getting better and kept delivering.” Barton’s commitment to getting the job done is something that impresses his bandmate. “He’s a very focused guy. Most musicians aren’t that focused when they are that young. He learned twenty songs in about eight days.”

Sullivan noted that there might be pressure of taking on the role of lead singer in a group with such a historic pedigree, but he says Barton doesn’t seem to be affected by the pressure. “He just wants to do what he does. You get new people in with new ideas, and usually that comes with a different vibe.”

All in all, the band is hoping that 2016 brings more success with their impending tour and planned album, slated for later in the year. “I think it could be a year to remember. He has a great work ethic.”

Survivor released their first album in 1980 on Scotti Brothers Their first Top-40 on the Hot 100 came the next year with “Poor Man’s Son.” Their big break would come in 1982 when the band was asked by Sylvester Stallone to provide the theme song for Rocky III. That single, “Eye Of The Tiger,” hit # 1 – staying there for seven weeks, winning a Grammy for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, a People’s Choice Award, and an Academy Award nomination. The song came in at #18 on the “Top 100 Singles” chart in Billboard‘s 100th Anniversary issue and it’s well over the 300,000 mark on iTunes, where it’s currently holding strong at #9 on their “Top Soundtrack” chart. The band also struck paydirt as a result of a Stallone movie when “Burning Heart” appeared on the soundtrack of Rocky IV in 1985, hitting # 2 on the singles chart.

The band’s VITAL SIGNS, was another huge success for the band, peaking at #16 on Billboard‘s “Top 200 Albums” chart thanks to the Billboard Top-20 hits "I Can't Hold Back" (#13), "High On You" (#8) and "The Search Is Over" (#4).

Dates for 2016 will be announced soon. For more information about Survivor, log on to their www.SurvivorBand.com

America’s Mass Incarceration Epidemic –
The United States loves to lock people behind bars more than any other country on the planet. According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2.3 million people are incarcerated in our country. While we only make up 5% of the world’s population, we account for an estimated 25% of the world’s prisoners, according to the ACLU. Federal spending on prison costs the U.S. $80 billion a year (The Hamilton Project/Brookings Institution).

Through active collaborations with music producers, promoters, artists, and socially conscious companies, Give a Beat raises awareness about America’s mass incarceration epidemic through live music events and online platforms, while providing dance and world music lovers with a unique channel for activism and philanthropy.

“Give a Beat is launching programs that aim to address and transform the racist and profit-driven policies of mass incarceration,” says Give A Beat Director Lauren Segal, “Our goal is to bring down the walls of injustice and support those trapped inside with love, compassion, forgiveness, and real life opportunities to live dignified, creative lives.”

Lauren Segal, Give a Beat Co-Founder, President, & Director –
Lauren Segal is best known as the Co-Founder and Director of NextAid, an LA-based organization that supported sustainable development projects in South Africa and Kenya for a decade. Determined to find innovative solutions and having been influenced by LiveAid, Segal became inspired to engage in her own brand of activism and quest for social justice at an early age. While earning a bachelor's degree from University of California, Santa Barbara, in Political Sociology, she developed an interest in harnessing music as a vehicle for creating positive social change. She became enveloped in the dance music scene and started building relationships with influential electronic music DJs, marking a pivotal time in her life.

In 2000, she was hired to help produce the largest outdoor dance music event in Mexico's history at the time, the ACA World Sound Festival, which was attended by 60,000 people from around the world to experience 75 global musical artists. A percentage of proceeds from the event supported the Million Wishes Latin American Charity in the building of a kindergarten and a generous donation was made to an HIV orphanage in Acapulco.

Her experience in Acapulco led to the inception of NextAid, “the next Live Aid,” in 2002. Imagining the potential of the international dance music community, NextAid was born in order to help children in Africa orphaned by AIDS. Through NextAid, Segal coordinated over 100 charity events, organized several benefit CD projects, and initiated dozens of campaigns, earning NextAid the role of a leading activist organization in the dance music industry.

For Segal, a tireless public servant, social action is the most fulfilling aspect of her life. Her efforts have raised immeasurable awareness and hundreds of thousands of dollars for humanitarian projects. A recipient of the prestigious 2010 African Goodwill Ambassador Award, Segal has been featured on VH-1, KPFK-FM, various panels addressing African issues, and in numerous publications. Her current focus is Give a Beat, the new non-profit organization that she co-founded with Virginia Cheung, to change the lives of at-risk youth and communities impacted by mass incarceration.

Virginia Cheung, Give a Beat Co-Founder & Vice President –
Virginia Cheung is a non-profit development professional with experience in helping small- to mid-sized organizations create and implement fundraising strategies and organizational infrastructure.

Greg Lucas, Give a Beat Founding Board Member & Treasurer –
Greg Lucas is the Director of Development for the world famous Preservation Hall Jazz Band. He has over 25 years in the creative industries, developing brand partnerships and activations to leverage pre-event marketing initiatives, on-site media, and post-event rich content distribution to maximize ticket sales and exposure for sponsors.

Give a Beat –
Give a Beat is a California-based 501c3 organization that provides music lovers with a dedicated channel for activism and philanthropy, while facilitating change in the face of inequality. Serving as a catalyst for tangible social change by bridging global electronic dance music culture with youth and families impacted by incarceration, the non-profit:

    • Partners with youth organizations to provide impactful music workshops
    • Shares inspirational stories that demonstrate the transformative power of music
    • Creates a mentorship and entrepreneurial program for previously incarcerated individuals
    • Generates gift-giving campaigns for exonerated individuals and their families

Give a Beat is a community of music lovers, musicians, artists, activists, promoters, and entrepreneurs that cares about the current state of domestic affairs and wants to create tangible opportunities to make a significant impact on vulnerable communities around the United States. NACIYE. A Turkish Horror Film World Premiere at ScreamFest LA

2015-10-09T16:00:00.000-07:00

"NACIYE"
THE UNNERVING FEATURE FILM DIRECTORIAL DEBUT
FROM TURKISH FILMMAKER LUTFU EMRE CICEK
TO HAVE ITS WORLD PREMIERE SCREENING
AT SCREAMFEST LA

The International Horror Film "Naciye" Will Leave a Mark!

(HOLLYWOOD, CA -- OCTOBER 9, 2015) Award-winning Turkish actress Derya Alabora ("Innocence," "When We Leave," "A Most Wanted Man") stars as the title character "Naciye" in Lutfu Emre Cicek's feature film directorial debut. "Naciye" will have its World Premiere screening at TCL Chinese 6 Theatres, 6801 Hollywood Blvd. Hollywood, CA at Hollywood & Highland as part of Screamfest LA on Thursday, October 15 at 7:30pm. Cicek and the film's stars Esin Harvey and Gorkem Mertsoz will be in attendance.

"For years I have followed Screamfest selections to discover new movies to watch so I feel very fortunate and proud to have the chance to premiere "Naciye" as part of this year's exciting line-up. To have the World Premiere in the heart of Hollywood and to launch our film at this prestigious horror film festival and for audiences to discover it is a dream come true," said Cicek.

"Naciye" was filmed on location during the off-season on the beautiful Princess Islands off the Marmara Coast of Istanbul, Turkey. Empty seaside mansions and gorgeous vistas belie the sinister and dangerous events about to unfold. The idyllic scene turns bloody and horrific as the body count quickly grows.

In "Naciye," a pregnant couple (Esin Harvey, Gorkem Mertsoz) travels for the weekend to check on the house they rented on a whim for the remainder of the pregnancy. On their first night at the secluded home they encounter the dangerous woman who claims to be its rightful owner.

Cicek was born in Turkey and then moved to the U.S. after high school. Like many teenagers, he grew up watching horror films and as a filmmaker, he has been influenced by movies like "Rosemary's Baby," "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle," and "Suspiria," as well as the works of Pedro Almodovar. After he moved back to Turkey, Cicek pursued his love of filmmaking; his favorite genre, horror films, was a natural choice for his first feature.

"With this movie I wanted to make something that would be familiar to horror fans in its homages to horror movie tropes but maintain its Turkish touches, like the island setting, the soap opera-esque hysteria of the leads, Naciye's style of clothing and the music." said Cicek.

Instead of making a Turkish or American horror film, Cicek made an international horror film influenced by both his Turkish upbringing and love of American Horror films. The result is a uniquely satisfyingly scary artistic and unique voice in the world of horror genre films. "Naciye" is accessible while also being quite shocking with an originality that should surely shock and please the die-hard horror fans while it intrigues and engages the not so faint of heart average audience members while they squirm in their seats and cover their eyes.

The film was directed, written, produced and edited by Cicek, produced by Refik Zafer Cicek and Begum Malaz, executive produced by Naciye Sonbay and Ekmel Sonbay with stunning cinematography by Kamil Satir.
