Last night at approximately 9:25 pm, a female passenger of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas reportedly went overboard. Passenger observations and a review of the cruise ship’s closed-circuit cameras have since confirmed the incident. Movement of the ship was immediately halted by the captain and two other ships that were also in the area (Carnival Fascination and Royal Caribbean’s Majesty of the Seas) assisted with the search for the 21 year old female passenger. The United States coast guard took control of the search and rescue operation at 3:30 am and released the cruise ships. As of now the passenger still has not been located, but the search continues. Due to the time spent searching for the missing passenger the cruise ship had to [...]

I just want to take some time to wish all of you a Happy Labor Day. Hopefully you all had a wonderful weekend, filled with family, friends and fun. As the holiday weekend, and with it the summer comes to its conclusion here’s to a healthy, productive and safe rest of the year. As you probably noticed, I haven’t been blogging for a while. This isn’t because I am done with the blog, it’s just that after going strong for about 2 years I was due for a much needed break. However, I will be back shortly hopefully both refocused and re-energized enough for another two year run. In the meantime it looks as if the weather is finally taking a turn for the better [...]

If you are a cruiser like me, who likes to spend time at the Lido deck pool, we probably share the same pet peeve. Chair hogs! We’ve all seen it and some of us have even been guilty of it, but if Carnival has their way the chair hog will be not only on the endangered species list, but extinct. It seems they have recently rolled out an anti-chair-hog initiative on the Carnival Breeze. Onboard the Breeze the deck crew has been instructed to keep an eye out for unoccupied seats being saved. Upon spotting a lounger fitting the criteria, the deck hand is supposed to mark the seat in question, with a notification sticker. If the marked chair remains empty for 40 minutes after [...]

Here on Mailbag Monday we tackle three different questions. The first question is about the Alaska cruise season. The second question deals with sorting through the often misunderstood mess of tipping policies. The last question is in reference to a teenager gaining consent to traveling with a family that is not her own. As always if you have any questions feel free to send them my way and I’ll do the best I can to answer them in a timely fashion. Also, if you would rather our correspondence remaining private just let me know and I won’t use your question in any Mailbag Monday posts. I would love to go on an Alaskan cruise this year but won’t be able to go until mid-October. Do [...]

Yesterday the cruise community learned that a passenger on an Alaska cruise died while on an excursion. Michael Ray Fullerton, a 62 year old man from Texas, was on a kayaking excursion with his family. While kayaking on Mendenhall Lake, which lies at the foot of Mendenhall Glacier, Fullerton started to complain of exhaustion. Due to the exhaustion he had to stop paddling. In an effort to help him out, the family tied their kayaks together to form a cluster. Sometime after this cluster of kayaks was formed, the kayaks overturned spilling everyone into the water. Eventually the family was able to flag down someone in a canoe, but not before they had already been in the 37 degree water for quite some time. The [...]
