The Inverted Pyramid Of Debt Banking System.

Understand a simple explanation of a bank and why the banking system collapsed as it did.

The banking system collapse was a factor of many things, however, it is advantageous to have a basic understanding of what a bank actually is and why it is so vulnerable. After all, you put all your hard earned cash into it so it probably makes sense to understand how they work, wouldn’t you agree?

The Pictomin above shows a red triangle, a black circle and two arrows. This simple image is a pictorial representation of a bank. Don’t stop reading, I will explain.

The green ball is the actually amount of cash, back up by something of tangible value (like gold), that the bank currently owns. This is the amount of actual substance of worth the bank would have if currency and the effects of currency collapsed and people wanted to reclaim their money back in something solid and tangible. Yes, I know. It is worryingly small.

The red triangle that is balancing on this small ball is the inverted pyramid of debt that the bank has created from this small amount of cash through complex lending schemes and systems such as fractional banking, derivatives and future share buys. As you can see the triangle is pretty unstable, symbolised here by the arrows.

The bigger the bank becomes, the larger the triangle becomes and thus the more unstable the bank becomes. Everyone following? Excellent.

Over the last 10-15 years the banks debt triangle has been becoming incredibly large and thus the whole system in turn very very unstable as only a very small percentage of the monetary figures being thrown around are backed up against an actually commodity such as gold; the rest of it is just numbers, opinion and in some respect blatant lies and fabrications.

The banks are unstable but when all are operating in this way they tend to just about keep each other standing.

You can imagine, I hope, that if all these unstable structures are balanced very closely to one another, as they are in the real world, then the combined effects of all off them wobbling with just about keep them all upright. This is exactly what was happening before 2008 and the crash. The banks were holding each other up.

However, when consumer confidence goes, such as recently, the highly unstable banks have a tendency to very quickly fall over with the largest banks carrying the largest debt triangle falling first. Once one goes the resulting balancing act is unsettled and they all tend to start toppling unless someone, like the government, uses a vast amount of money to reduce the size of the triangle, pick them up again and once again start the balancing trick, which is exactly what happened.

As is probably obvious to most that have read this far, this is not a sustainable solution and once the banks start lending and creating wealth out of nothing again their triangles will once again start to grow and they will topple they again causing greater pain and misery to all involved, apart from the top guys at the bank who will walk away again having done very well out of the whole affair.

Since moving away from the Gold Standard in the 1930s, where currency had to be backed up against something solid such as gold, we have created a system that can create money out of nothing and now we cannot go back.

It is worth remembering the Pictomin image when you next put all your faith into a bank. They are very good at creating something from nothing, the only problem being that we then end up with a lot of nothing, also affectionately referred to as currency, floating around which can very easily disappear in an instant.

Why were so many people shocked when the biggest triangle pyramid of debt was broken and over a billion dollars disappeared instantly overnight. The reason being is that it never really existed in the first place, it was just numbers floating around the banks and the stock exchange.

I appreciate that this is quite a simplistic overview of the banking system but it is a good reminder for people to really understand the problems that are very much at the core of banking and why the governments interventions were no more than a buffer to a further more devastating collapse that will be inevitable if the banks are ever allowed to go back to their unmoderated ways. Unfortunately the truth is that they will.

I hope this has spoken to people, I will end on a joke to lighten things up again.

As a project manager we averaged around 100-300 emails a day and were expected to get through them. This routinely added a good few hours to my day and as I was always quite fond of my free time out of the office, this was a problem for me.

Now not everyone will be getting this quantity of email every day but the principles below I used to reduce the amount I actually had to look at by around 90% from 100-300 a day to less than 20 can be applied to anyones inbox.

1. For Gods sake stop checking your email every 5 minutes

Trust me, nothing in life is that important. Not clients, not problems, not England winning the world cup ( ? ).

No matter how important you think you are there is never a need for people to always have instant access to you.

If you don’t believe me go on holiday for a week and don’t reply to any emails. People work out ways around you if the need is great enough, even personal clients will forgive you.

I try to only check my emails once a day, and I did this even as a project manager so don’t tell me that it is different for you as it is not. Most people have an inflated sense of worth which is why they think they are so important everyone must has access to them. Sorry guys, life does go on without you.

Let your emails batch up and only check them at a certain time for a specific amount of time.

2. You don’t actually need to read most of the emails you get

Again, look past how important you think you are and think about the amount of emails you actually have to answer. The ones that are directly sent solely to you or are solely for you action mainly. Usually in any business this is very few. In project management it is very, very few though most PM’s will tell you this is not the case.

Get into the habit of only answering emails that are sent directly to you and only you and that will need actioning by you and only you. These are the priority, anything else can wait or can be ignored. Almost all the time there will be no repercussions.

This leads me onto point 3.

3. Take the time to set up email rules.

I reduced the amount of emails I got in any given day most dramatically by taking an hour to set up some rules. Here they are:

Rule 1: Any email directed to me and only me was highlighted in Red – These are the ones I have to answer and were the only ones that appeared directly in my inbox.

Rule 2: Any email directed to me and another person was highlighted in blue and sent to a “Potential Box” These emails were more often than not answered by the other guy and never came back to me. However if there was a problem I had easy access to the emails.

Rule 3: Any email that I was CC’d on was sent straight to an “Information Folder” and I never looked at them unless someone specifically emailed me on a subject that I would then look up easily using the search. Contrary to popular belief a project manager does not need to know everything about everything that is going on in his project, people are competent if you trust them. A project manager is there to oversee not control and it is the same in other professions.

Rule 4: Write a professional email responder that lets people know how you operate in emails and that if it is incredibly important to send you an email with FYA in the subject line and sent only to you. This has to be tactfully done as many of the rules I set up were not allowed at my company and won’t be at many others. It didn’t stop me from using them because I knew I was more productive that way but I had to be careful that others didn’t know I was using them. People don’t like change in big companies, be sneaky.

4. Get people talking to each other.

As a project manager you can get caught up in lots of office love triangles ( and not the good ones ) between clients and engineers and internal staff and the shop floor assistance along with the odd intern and these said love triangles are birthed and developed through email. Cut it out quickly.

If everything is coming though you at each interaction there is always a lot of lost in translation problems or at the very best you have you to keep forwarding the emails to the right people and you become a glorified data transferrer. Lots of wasted time.

This problem can be easily removed by setting up policies where people email each other and CC you into the conversations. You will obviously only then look at it if there is a problem but 9 times out of ten things go smoothly. Learn to smile and talk to people.

5. Send Concise Emails

In todays age of easy and instant communication we have lost the art of being concise and asking for what you want. Back when a letter between businesses would take 2 weeks to turn around it was important to write well so that there was no confusion on what was needed and by when, how and by whom. We have lost that mostly in this age, so you need to get back into the habit.

Don’t just send emails for the sake of it and CC everyone in on it. Know what the aim of the email is and be concise, email the correct person and only others if completely necessary. Include all the detail so it doesn’t come bouncing back within 20 minutes asking you to clarify.

6. Weed Out Your Trouble Makers

Unfortunately there are always people in business that just love emails and sending them. They seem to think they are doing a better job because of it. They will send them in the early hours of the morning and CC every in on it, or ask stupid questions and reply with one word answers. These are the people that start calling you and sending repeat emails if you don’t get back to them within 20 minutes. They have far too much time on their hands and are a pain in the ass.

Create a special folder for these people and start to slowly phase them out by ignoring them.

Usually they will get more aggressive initially but just keep a record of their pointless emails to use in your defence later on if the issue goes higher. Usually, shown the evidence of their foolishness you will never have a problem.

To Sum Up

You might think that your job does not allow this type of approach but just remember, I was a Project Manager of a multi billion pound global company and personally had responsibility for many millions of pounds worth of project and clients.

I used these rules and it made my life a hell of a lot easier. I was never fired, reprimanded or brought before the boss. My project, far from collapsing actually ran smoother and I freed up many hours every day.

Do not instantly reject this approach, it WILL save you many, many hours.

Being Skint Doesn’t have to get in the way of succeeding

As a young entrepreneur seeking his fortune there will be inevitable times when you are, to give the situation it’s technical name, skint. This situation however, does not have to mean that you need not invest in the tools of your future success and thus I have highlighted 5 excellent purchases that even an incredibly skint young entrepreneur could afford. First step – theses 5 purchases, next step – Ferrari (possibly with a few more steps in between)

Highlighter

The humble highlighter – a crazy, fluorescent vessel of vivid, translucent color just waiting to be released onto any and all unsuspecting paper like surfaces. If you have never got into the habit of using a highlighter then prepare to make way for a new best friend.

As many of us are human we are therefore not especially adept at remembering large amounts of data and as this is 2010 we are subjected to an insane amount of it. The highlighter is your pathfinder to carving out the most relevant and important informations in the crashing waves of information overflow.

In my house, you will know if I have read a book as they will be covered in highlighter and penned notes. I like not just to read but to devour words as I believe it is essential for true comprehension. The highlighter will help you in this. It will also save you time as you come back to review old books and works already read by taking you straight to the juicy bits.

Get yourself a stash of highlighters and start getting busy, even downright naughty in your quest for knowledge and understanding though keep it out of the bedroom environment and be careful not to start getting addicted to the toxin induced high.

Post It Notes

The thing I love most about post-it notes, apart from their crazy, crazy color schemes is their size. The frankly tiny foot print of the standard 3 inch post-it note dramatically reduces the amount of words you can fit on each one – and it is for this sole reason that I so passionately recommend them for planning.

The post-it note forces you to focus only on what is most important and to be precise, there is no room for anything else. I use post-its to plan each day using my 7 Life System, to make notes on phone conversations, to plan projects, write love letters, write shopping lists and sketch design ideas. Ok, I am joking about the love letters.

Chewing Gum

Gum is an excellent success tool for two reasons.

1. It ensures that you have a fresh minty breath escaping your vocal region whenever you come into contact with one of the most important assets for success: other people.
2. It always gives you a natural “in” for almost any situation.

No matter how attractive, talented, loaded or creative you are if it smells like a trawler of dead fish has just been dumped nearby on a hot summers day then people are going to rightfully do their best to avoid you. For the sake of a few cent don’t make this costly mistake.

Offering gum is a great icebreaker in any situation. I always carry a pack with me as a guaranteed fall back to social interaction if no other “in” presents itself. Though $1000 courses on successful human interaction may pay dividends a pack of chewing gum will give you instant returns and costs next to nothing.

Chocolate

Sometimes life throws you a curveball. If you are a budding entrepreneur then more often than not it can seem like you are in a batting cage facing a ball pitching machine set on full swing.

Chocolate helps. For real. A small amount of good quality chocolate has over 300 chemicals that have numerous and varied effect on the brain including releasing endorphins which make you happier. Its naturally low melting point and creamy texture also help promote a feeling of calm.

Life won’t always go your way, but for under a dollar you can take the edge of and get back to focussing on success more quickly.

An Elastic Band

This is an old trick and I am not sure who get the credit for coming up with it but a simple elastic band around the wrist can be one of the greatest tools in the world for habit change.

The basic principle of changing  habit is to reinforce a new behavior in place of the old one, NOT as many people think by simply stopping the old behavior. Thus the elastic band round the wrist comes into play.

Every time you find yourself falling into the old, unwanted habit, say negative thought, you need to break the thinking pattern for you subconscious. This is done with a quick sharp snap of the elastic band on your wrist. It hurts, trust me I know, and that is the point. Negative thinking, in this instant, starts to be associated with pain and positive thinking with a noticeable absence of pain and thus your subconscious naturally starts to lean towards more positive thinking. Basic Pavlovian theory in action, we can condition our thinking for less than a dollar.

Why Read? (850 words)

I have been training myself to read faster for many years now and I have an average reading speed of 300 wpm ( words per minute) with 80% comprehension and a scanning speed of 480 wpm with a comprehension of 45% which can be pushed to around 900wpm if really scanning. However, just recently I have come across a nice little trick that will allow you to read at over 500 wpm straight from the get go with a high 50% comprehension. And yes, because I am a nice guy I am going to let you in on the secret.

The Basics Of Speed Reading

In short, the science behind speed reading is batching. Like a microcomputer system batches data, so too does a speed reader batch words.

Imagine speed reading is like making delicious chocolate brownies.

Making just one individual delicious chocolate brownie at a time is a very slow process and limits the amount of chocolatey goodness one can stuff in their face. Batching the process however, allows many more delicious chocolate brownies to be created in the same timeframe thus allowing one to get fatter quicker.

Speed reading is the same. Normal readers read every single word and this is a very slow process, like ordering food in India. Speed readers batch the words and read groups of words in chucks which is a much quicker process, like receiving the bill in India.

The brain, like an AppleMac, can compute the information it is receiving far quicker than the eyes can send it. It is actually the eyes that are the bottle neck in reading quickly. In addition the eyes tend to “bounce” when reading and one doesn’t read each work in one continuous line like you would think. They eyes actually bounce forward and backwards across sentences and up and down across paragraphs. You may not realize you are doing this when you read but I assure you it is happening.

It is for this reason that when you start to learn how to speed read you are forced to read with your finger following the words, much like you did when you were 10. As humiliating as this is, it helps to train the eyes to stop bouncing around on the page, which slows down your reading speed.

As one increases their reading speed to start batching words and reading in chucks, first in pairs, then threes, fours and sometimes fives. Very fast speed readers will break entire lines into two sections and scan the pages in only two eyes “bounces” while their brain remembers the word chucks and makes sense of them in the background. This takes time to learn so I have discovered an easier way to speed read at over 500 words a minute.

The 5 Minute, 500 wpm Super Secrety Secret.

“In any article, publishing, blog post or any other form of written word only read the first sentence of each paragraph.”

It’s as simple as my mate George who still eats the red crayons even though he’s now 32. Try it out for yourself. (Reading the first sentence, not eating crayons.)

It has come to my attention that the first sentence of every paragraph almost always seems to be a mini summary of the preceding section. The rest of the paragraph tends to back up what the first sentence is highlighting. If you don’t believe me try it with newspaper articles or blog posts and you will see that this rings true more often then not.

Now lets take that principle and apply it across a whole article. As an experiment try it for yourself. Write down only the first sentence of each paragraph of any article and blog and then review it. See if you can get the main gist of the article and the major points it is trying to present. I think that you will find that you almost always can get a very good idea of the piece and it will only have taken a fraction of the time to read, equivalent to a reading speed of 500 wpm.

Also, you will probably find that because you are only focussing on a reduced number of sentences you will find  it easier to remember the main points and themes of the piece, far more than if your read the whole article slowly and then tried to pick out what it was saying.

Speed reading takes time to develop but is an exceptionally good tool for the average lifestyle designer to develop. Until such time as you have the hours to perfect your reading average, why not try the technique outlined above and instantly reduce the amount of time it takes you to ingest information AND more than likely improve you level of comprehension to boot. You know, because that would make life at lot easier for you. Right? Just do it ok.

Why Read (<850 words)

Finance can be a very complicated and disconcerting place, like France…but it doesn’t have to be. Understanding your most basic and important financial equation, your personal cash flow, is very easy using simple cash flow arrows. Knowing the cashflow arrows and knowing that they need to be balanced is easy. Going about balancing them in a different way to 95% of the populations requires more leg work…but the payoff is huge. If you want to learn how to go after the big prize then read on.

Cash flow Arrows

Financially speaking, there is a vast difference between the amounts of money that people earn. Some make more than others and some make substantially more than others. However, everyone shares the same cash flow balancing act. Everyone has cash coming in, (Green Arrow) and cash flowing out (Red Arrow). Ideally the cash coming in arrow wants to be larger than the cash going out arrow and not the other way round to ensure a level of financial security and freedom from the pay check. All fairly simple stuff so far.

Everyone has the same simple cash flow equation but there are two ways of balancing it. 95% of people balance it one way and only 5% of people balance it another way. You want to be in the 5% category and it is easier than you think.

The 95% Way - Sell Your Time And Experience

For most people the only way to increase the size of the green arrow is to sell more and more time or gain more and more experience (which also takes time). Selling more time is an obvious way to earn more and increasing your experience means that your time is worth more per hour. This in itself is very obviously a ultimately flawed solution as there is only a finite amount of time and experience that one person can sell and thus there is a finite size to your green arrow. The red arrow on the other hand, your outgoings, is not so finite and can very easily get very large, very quickly.

The 5% Way - Package Your Time And Experience And Sell It Over And Over And Over Again

How did Bill Gates manage to become the richest person in the world and a multi billionaire? According to the 95% way this just isn’t possible. Bill Gates experience, as great as it is, isn’t worth billions and he has no more hours available to him to sell than any other individual. What Bill Gates did, and what brought him huge wealth, was to package his experience in the form of software and ultimately his company Microsoft. He could now sell this package again and again and again. This is called a scalable model and in theory is infinite within the huge global market.

Only a small amount of people live this way, but in this current world it is the model that everyone should be aiming for. Possibly not at the scale of Microsoft but then it doesn’t have to be.

Repackaging and selling your experience in a product form means that, after the initial investment, you are not having to trade your time for cash.

Most people who make their money this way actually pay for other peoples time to keep it running and the money coming in, giving them freedom from the pay check. The more they sell, the more people they hire and the more money they make but without trading their key resource, their time. Cash generating assets like these make the owner money whether he is awake/asleep/on holidays or catching up on the latest episode of lost.

Leverage Isn’t Always Good

The trick to owning cash generating assets and having a stress free life is to ensure that they are not leveraged as much as possible.

Leveraged cash generating assets are those obtained by taking out loans and going into debt and are risky when not properly managed and understood. If the cash stops coming in you could be left with huge debts. Ideally your cash generating assets should be non-leveraged so that if they do dry up all that stops is the money coming in and if you have multiple streams of income, this should not present a problem. Non leveraged cash generating assets are not as difficult to set up as some might think and there are some great books out there that go into it in much more detail than I will. A good start is to read the 4 Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris.

To Sum Up

How you balance your Cashflow arrows will determine how wealthy you will become. No one becomes wealthy over night, it is a long term investment in knowledge and understanding. However you have a choice, follow the herd and do what 95% of people do to balance their arrows or commit to learning to create non leveraged cash generating arrows and become wealthy with the other 5%.

Why Read?

Let me introduce you to Tony Hsieh

In 1999, at the age of twenty-four, Tony Hsieh (pronounced Shay) sold LinkExchange, the company he cofounded, to Microsoft for $265 million. He then joined Zappos as an adviser and investor, and eventually became CEO. He helped Zappos grow from almost nothing to over $1 billion in gross merchandise sales annually, while simultaneously making Fortune magazine’s annual “Best Places to Work For” list. Hsieh currently lives in Las Vegas and sort of has a cat.

He is now 36 and still rocking the entrepreneurial world.

How To Deliver Happiness

1. Create Something Meaningful

You really get a sense from watching Videos of Tony and the people that work for him that he is simply bursting with genuine passion and kid-like enthusiasm. An infectious combination.

Whatever your passion or interest, is it meaningful? It need only be meaningful to you, but it needs to be meaningful to someone. Nothing was ever built successfully and has lasted that was founded on a strong reason d’entre or reason for being.

2. The Value Of Values

In my post A Simple Structure That Will Change Your Life the Seven Life system has your core 7 “Principles” or “Values” right at the top of the tree.

Tony also places a huge emphasis on the necessity off having these core values, even to the point of firing individuals who may be profitable short term, but risk the long term health of the company because they do not buy into the same value system as the rest of the team.

Having a set of core values is essential to your success. It focuses you, gives your success a framework of integrity and ultimately is reflected in anything you do.

3. Don’t Just Write Down Your Values, Live Them

Zappos has a great culture of seriously “Going the extra mile”, especially when it comes to the hiring process. They go so far as to interviewing the drivers of the interviewee at the end of the day to find out what they are like “off camera”. It is no doubt this commitment to hiring the very best match of employee that has seen their company take off.

4. Do The Opposite Of Everything

“Basically I try to do the opposite of what everyone is doing in the industry” Tony.

Simply philosophy. Risky philosophy. Successful philosophy. Something to reflect on.

A while ago I sent out a survey to review how things were going on thelifething.com and how I could improve what it offers to all that read it. Thanks to the 55 people than replied to the survey, which is an exactly 10% of my current feedburner readers which I don’t think is bad by anyones standards. Here are the questions I asked and what you said.

1. How would you rate the overall quality of thelifething.com?

The options given were to rate it between a score of 1 and 10 and I am happy to say that you rated the site an average of 7.91, which is awesome, with almost 20% rating it 10 out of 10. There were obviously a few less than happy individuals but then you can’t please everyone.

2. thelifething.com focuses on Lifestyle Design, Business and Sexy Money. Which are you most interested in?

It seems that lifestyle is still the heavy focus of the readers on this blog though this is slightly skewed by the fact that business and sexy money is a recent addition. However, Lifestyle design will remain the core focus of the lifething.com with business and sexy money topics used to enhance the user experience.

3. Which type of post do you enjoy most?

Well it seems that thelifething.com are a practical bunch looking for actual tools to reach success instead of just words. I can relate to that and so a large focus of thelifething.com will be exploring and giving people the practical tools for living the life they dream of supplemented with Spotlight, How to’s and personal experience articles.

4. Which type of ebook would you like to see more of at thelifething.com?

Fortunately only one person hated my ebooks, thus it seems most really liked them, which is great because as anyone who written one will know they take a huge amount of time and effort input. Great to see everyone wants to see more ebooks of one description or another. I will try and put out another Free Ebook and another Collaborative one this year if time permits however I have two excellent commercial books coming out shortly that I have been working on  for almost a year and so am really excited to have the almost ready for launch. Don’t worry, they will be very reasonably priced. They are:

So Here Is What Is Going To Happen

I am now off for a week to go sailing and talk business round the UK coast with a good friend of mine who runs nothingbutpadlock.com and wrote the excellent guest post How An Online Padlock Business Created A 30 Foot Yacht. While out I won’t have internet but will work on a new structure for thelifething.com that takes into consideration everyones feedback and will hopefully then give as much value as humanly possible.
