This next one is pretty old but it hasn't had nearly the exposure it deserves. Fantastic Mr. Fox takes a classic UK sound with skittering, punchy percussion and turns it upside down with 8-bit synths and distorted guitar.

I sort of slept on Lo-Fi-Fnk's return until tonight...I mean I heard Marchin' In, didn't really care, and then moved on.

I don't know what I was thinking. After a second, third, fourth, etc. listen I still can't get enough. It is infectiously catchy in a really non-contrived almost naive way. Basically it is really fun good-vibes music. So here is the latest single, and it doesn't disappoint either. Synth sax? Yea they went there. It sort of reminds me of the strange use of sax in Marie Moor's "Pretty Day," except I am pretty certain that was a real saxophone. This is the sort of thing that will have any dancefloor composed of half-decent human beings grinning ear to ear.

This is a fairly old one from Scuba, but it's my favorite track of his that I have heard. It is minimalist, and I can't really tell if it is techno-influenced dubstep or dubstep-influenced techno...but that doesn't really matter. What does matter is the fact that it is excellent, and you should listen, download, and then purchase subsequent releases from mr. Scuba.

Florence and the Machine + Breakage

Ever since I first heard breakage I knew I was in love. Deep, dark dubstep and Drum n Bass, done right, and this remix is no different. He takes an already stellar track from Florence and the Machine and turns it into a monster, complete with gnarly bass and trancey synth pads. It might be an old one, but this is only my second post in six months, and I can't ignore this one just because I didn't post it months ago!

So I have been laying really low lately, and I apologize for my lack of posts. What I've got for you today is a track called "who remembers" by Benga. It is a good representative of what I've been listening to the past few months; Drum and Bass, jungle, garage, dubstep, etc...all nice and deep. It's not that I am not into the chainsaw-bassline brostep thats circulating, but for me recently it is just all about the DRUMS. Enjoy this modern rave classic.

From the latest release by Lisbon-based collective Discotexas, "Forbidden Cuts EP," is Xinobi's new track "Valsa in NJ." I have no idea what the song has to do with my home state of New jersey, but this is one of the funkiest tracks I have heard in a while. I am absolutely loving this one. I played it out on a big system for the first time this past weekend and I was blown away.

The first time I heard this song a was few years back in a club in NYC and I had it stuck in my head for weeks. The problem, i suppose, was that I do not speak French and therefore could not simply google the lyrics to figure out what it was. It was driving me insane to the point where I was listening to everything French Pop I could get my hands on in hopes of stumbling upon it (this says more about my OCD than the song perhaps). Anyway, I found it eventually and also discovered a lot more really great music along the way.

Believe it or not this one was written by French legend Serge Gainsbourg and was considered overly complex in its lyrical content to be sung by a teenage pop star like France Gall, but alas, I don't speak French so I will have to take the critics' word for it in that regard. What I do know however, is that this is one catchy mod anthem that will have you bouncing in your computer chair.

This is a newly released remix of a years old song that never got much play to begin with for one reason or another. I'm not sure exactly what happened but I know that at least the Treasure Fingers remix of this tune has been around for at least two years. I've seen him and a couple other djs spin it a handful of times and I have always been a big fan of it but was never able to find a high quality version. Now that it has been released I have, but I can't post it here, so here is the Bird Peterson remix. It is also amazing, and quite a bit harder than TF's. Check out the Treasure Fingers version on Beatport and buy it if you like it!

Blood Red Shoes

I first discovered Blood Red Shoes some time in mid 2007 and they didn't leave much of an impression on me. Their forthcoming release, however, shoes much promise. In the band's own words, their new material "feels a lot darker and eerie. It has more complex song structures and intricate guitar parts than before." Dark and eerie is always good in Camp Thelonius Crunk.

The Brighton, UK duo's new harder, faster, darker sound may hint at things to come in the new decade for danceable indie rock. It is reminiscent of classics such as The Strokes and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs yet takes a solid step forward and sounds fresh and interesting. enjoy!

The Knife In Collaboration With Mt. Sims and Planningtorock - Colouring of Pigeons

Commissioned by Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma to write the music for their opera based on Charles Darwin and his book ‘On the Origin of the Species’, The Knife decided to make this a collaborative process, working with artists Mt. Sims and Planningtorock for the first time, to capture the huge width of the Darwin and evolution theme. They extensively researched Darwin related literature and articles, with Olof attending a field recording workshop in the Amazon to find inspiration and to record sounds.

‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ is a unique musical project. Richard Dawkins’s gene trees have formed the basis of some of the musical composition, artificial sounds have been mixed with field recordings, with the music inspired by everything from the different stages of a bird learning its melody, to a song based on Darwin’s loving letters about his daughter Anne. These are compositions that challenge the conventional conception of opera music.

Pushing the experimental process further still, composer, choreographer, costume designer and set designer worked separately, only coming together 3 and a half months before the first performance of ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ in Copenhagen on the 2nd September 2009. Described as “shifting the position of operartic art in a single leap”, further performances of ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ are confirmed to take place in Athens (8-9 Jan), Stockholm (29 Jan-1 Feb), and Munster (5 June), with further dates to be announced.

Olof Dreijer says: “At first it was very difficult as we really didn’t know anything about opera. We’d never been to one. I didn’t even know what the word libretto meant. But after some studying, and just getting used to opera’s essence of pretentious and dramatic gestures, I found that there is a lot to learn and play with. In fact, our ignorance gave us a positive respectless approach to making opera. It took me about a year to become emotionally moved by an opera singer and now I really do. I really like the basic theatrical values of opera and the easy way it brings forward a narrative. We’ve approached this before in The Knife but never in such a clear way.”

I first heard this near the end of his epic Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1. I'm sensing some influence from fellow Italian Ennio Morricone in this one. Dusty Kid is a true talent; you don't just have to be into techno/house music to see that, although it helps.

Baron, born and raised in the great city of Newark, NJ and currently residing in NYC, is a purveyor of excellent music. Drawing from diverse influences including Hall & Oates, Goldfrapp, and Kanye West, he has forged his own style of rapping, and it certainly has garnered himmuch attention. Among the praise is his song "Feel Like Fashion"being nominated for a 2009 Out Music award for best rap/hip hop song. Here is the second remix I did for him. I think it worked out pretty well.
