Dragon Boat Race - A call for rowers

To celebrate this year’s Dragon Boat Festival, the London Chinatown Lions Club is organizing a Dragon Boat Race on 28th June 2009 at the Royal Albert Docks. This event is sponsored by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office. For more details of the race, please visit www.lclc.co.uk Last year, our team managed to raise a fantastic £2225 from sponsorship for the Sichuan Earthquake Appeal. We were 14th out of a total of 42 participating teams. Building on last year’s success, The Meridian Society (TMS) and the British-Based Chinese Network (BBCN) will take part again this year, and will need 16 rowers and a drummer to make up our team. Men and women, Chinese and non-Chinese are equally welcome to join us. Two days of training will be arranged at further notice. We will provide refreshment and light snacks for rowers on the day. If you are looking for a whole day’s fun, exercise and socializing with other wonderful people, or showing off your rowing skills, do let us know before 7th June by sending an email to themeridiansociety@gmail.com Although we are not raising funds for any charitable cause this year, our operation depends entirely on donations and volunteers. In order to cover the cost of participating the Dragon Boat Race, such as entry fee, cost of refreshments and transportation etc, we are looking for a small contribution of £10 from each participant. The shortfall will be met by TMS and BBCN.

Coverage of Social Issues on Chinese Television

The Meridian Society/BBCN will be hosting a talk on Friday 27th February, 2009 in association with the CSSA of The School of Oriental and African Studies, Imperial College and The London School of Economics. The lecture will be delivered by Ms Peng Wenlan, new Chair of The Meridian Society.

Television in China, as with radio and the press, comes under tight state control and continues to be used as a propaganda tool to project a bright, positive and inspiring view of life. “Issues” or anything mildly negative or critical, are deemed to be unconstructive, even seditious. In recent years, however, social problems have been covered with greater regularity and openness on the Chinese media, but the language remains didactic and judgmental.

The speaker, Peng Wenlan, is an independent television producer and will be basing her talk on her observations in China, where she worked from 2006-7 as the BBC’s Documentary Consultant on a project to train documentary filmmakers in west China. The talk, which is the same given at Asia House last year, will be illustrated with a short film from the project. Entitled School on the Cliff, this film was shown in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide on the BBC’s international channel in August 2008 and was rated most popular documentary in the week that it was shown.

Time and Venue

Time: 6.30pm – 7.30pm

Venue: Room U8, Tower One, The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Houghton Street, London, WC2A 2AE

Transport: The nearest tube stations are Holborn and Temple (both are 5 mins walk) The nearest Main Line stations are Waterloo and Charing Cross (both are 10 mins walk)
