<h2>Quilts in Progress</h2>

<h3>Quilt #1</h3>

<h4>Working Title</h4>

<p> Butterfly Quilt</p>

<h4>Background</h4>

<p>I started this quilt for the Modern Quilt Guild (MQG) Pollinator Challenge issued a few Summers ago. I obviously didn&#8217;t make that deadline, but I&#8217;ve been working on the quilt off and on since then.</p>

<h4>Potential Category</h4>

<p>Appliqué</p>

<h4>Production Process</h4>

<p>All of the hand needle-turn appliqué is finished. I selected and prewashed the backing fabric. I still need to baste, quilt, and finish the edges.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Butterfly-Applique-August-27.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="1011" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Butterfly-Applique-August-27-1024x1011.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8030" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Butterfly-Applique-August-27-1024x1011.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Butterfly-Applique-August-27-640x632.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Butterfly-Applique-August-27-768x758.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Butterfly-Applique-August-27.jpg 1450w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h3>Quilt #2</h3>

<h4>Working Title</h4>

<p>Ceiling Minimalism</p>

<h4>Background</h4>

<p>Staring up at the ceiling of my studio in the evening, with ambient light, inspired this design.</p>

<h4>Potential Category</h4>

<p>Minimalism</p>

<h4>Production Process</h4>

<p>The quilt top is complete. I have selected and prewashed the backing fabric. The quilting is the star of the project, so it will take a decent amount of time to execute. I plan to add a facing to finish the edge.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Ceiling-Minimalism-Quilt.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="843" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Ceiling-Minimalism-Quilt-843x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8031" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Ceiling-Minimalism-Quilt-843x1024.jpg 843w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Ceiling-Minimalism-Quilt-527x640.jpg 527w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Ceiling-Minimalism-Quilt-768x933.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Ceiling-Minimalism-Quilt-1265x1536.jpg 1265w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Ceiling-Minimalism-Quilt.jpg 1300w" sizes="(max-width: 843px) 100vw, 843px" /></a><figcaption>Ceiling Minimalism Quilt Top</figcaption></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Final-Quilting-Test.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="1000" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Final-Quilting-Test.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8039" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Final-Quilting-Test.jpg 1000w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Final-Quilting-Test-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Final-Quilting-Test-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Final-Quilting-Test-768x768.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></a><figcaption>Quilting Test Swatch for Ceiling Minimalism</figcaption></figure>

<h3>Quilt #3</h3>

<h4>Working Title</h4>

<p>Violet Rose</p>

<h4>Background</h4>

<p>Scrappy monochromatic quilts are featured in one of the special categories at QuiltCon 2027, and it worked well with a concept I wanted to explore. This appliqué quilt is a forced-perspective version of a traditional pieced quilt block called White Rose.</p>

<h4>Potential Category</h4>

<p>Pick-A-Color Scrappy Challenge</p>

<h4>Production Process</h4>

<p>This piece has the most work left. The design and fabric placement are complete. I need to take the piece off the design wall, baste the appliqué, do the needle-turn appliqué, baste and quilt the project, and finish the edge.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Violet-Rose-August-27.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="851" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Violet-Rose-August-27-851x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8032" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Violet-Rose-August-27-851x1024.jpg 851w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Violet-Rose-August-27-532x640.jpg 532w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Violet-Rose-August-27-768x924.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Violet-Rose-August-27-1277x1536.jpg 1277w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Violet-Rose-August-27.jpg 1300w" sizes="(max-width: 851px) 100vw, 851px" /></a></figure></div>

<h3>Quilt #4</h3>

<h4>Working Title</h4>

<p>View of the Sky</p>

<h4>Background</h4>

<p>Last year, while ice dyeing, a piece of fabric came out that looked like a view of the sky through the branches of a grove of trees. I didn&#8217;t want to cut it up, so it became a wholecloth quilt with improvisational tucks, large stitch hand quilting, and decorative hand-quilting accents.</p>

<h4>Potential Category</h4>

<p>Handwork</p>

<h4>Production Process</h4>

<p>This is the project I picked up off and on over the past year when I needed handwork on the go. It was a surprise when I finished the quilting—it totally snuck up on me! I still need to add more decorative hand stitching and finish the edges.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Whole-Cloth-Ice-Dyed-Sky-August-27.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="667" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Whole-Cloth-Ice-Dyed-Sky-August-27-667x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8033" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Whole-Cloth-Ice-Dyed-Sky-August-27-667x1024.jpg 667w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Whole-Cloth-Ice-Dyed-Sky-August-27-417x640.jpg 417w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Whole-Cloth-Ice-Dyed-Sky-August-27-768x1179.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Whole-Cloth-Ice-Dyed-Sky-August-27-1001x1536.jpg 1001w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Whole-Cloth-Ice-Dyed-Sky-August-27.jpg 1150w" sizes="(max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px" /></a></figure></div>

<h2>The Finished Quilt</h2>

<p>I only have one finished quilt to enter so far. <a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/is-there-such-a-thing-as-an-ugly-color-this-new-quilt-stretches-the-limits/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/is-there-such-a-thing-as-an-ugly-color-this-new-quilt-stretches-the-limits/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stretching the Color Limits</a> was a challenge quilt I made last year that embraced &#8220;ugly&#8221; colors. Since it is only 17&#8243; x 12&#8243;, I will enter it in the Small Quilt Category.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Ugly-Fabric-Challenge-front.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="734" src="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Ugly-Fabric-Challenge-front-1024x734.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7136" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Ugly-Fabric-Challenge-front-1024x734.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Ugly-Fabric-Challenge-front-640x459.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Ugly-Fabric-Challenge-front-768x550.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Ugly-Fabric-Challenge-front.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h2>Entering QuiltCon</h2>

<p>There are more than two months left to enter <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.quiltcon.com/quilt-show-landing/quilt-show" target="_blank">QuiltCon</a>, so there is plenty of time to finish an existing project or start something new! (I actually have one more quilt that I would love to make, but I&#8217;m prioritizing the ones I shared today.)</p>

<p>You may have noticed that I currently plan to enter five quilts. Each member can enter as many quilts as they like, but a maximum of four quilts can be in the show, which is definitely something to keep in mind when planning your entries. </p>

<p>I can’t wait to see your entries!</p>

<h3>Shaft Mines</h3>

<h4>By Wanda Dotson</h4>

<p>Horizontal lines dominate this contemporary piece of improvisation with just enough vertical piecing to help move your eye around the composition. While horizontal lines are generally calming (think of a sunset over the ocean), the juxtaposition of a primarily magenta palette creates unexpected energy.</p>

<h3>Receptaculum X: puer universum integro Arisaema triphyllum (A Boys World Recreated Jack-in-the-Pulpit)</h3>

<h4>By Andrea Finch</h4>

<p>A well-loved quilt forms the base of this piece, which explores the theme of transition. While the maker’s story could have been told in 2-D form, it feels appropriate to depict a plant in the configuration of a pot or vase that would typically contain it.</p>

<h3>Power Object 1</h3>

<h4>By Jasmine Best</h4>

<p>Fiber goes beyond fabric and thread, and the exhibit includes several brooms and similar objects. I was drawn to this piece, which uses the impressive techniques of making a functional broom to create a purely decorative object infused with meaning.</p>

<h3>Monet&#8217;s Pond </h3>

<h3>The Third Hand</h3>

<h4>By Aeran Kim</h4>

<p>The layers of texture pulled me into this composition. I was particularly intrigued by the rounds of thread embroidered on the surface- they remind me of the machine I learned to sew on that had bobbins which unscrewed to allow you to remove the extra bobbin thread, leaving perfect little rings of thread.</p>

<h3>Wall of Flame</h3>

<h4>By Marijke Van Lamoen</h4>

<p>This piece pushes the boundaries of what we traditionally consider a quilt by using safety pins as the permanent method for joining the quilt&#8217;s layers.</p>

<h3>Zeitgeist of the Dream</h3>

<h4>By Irina Malyukova</h4>

<p>The forced perspective of the quilt enhances the surrealist feel and makes me want to move around the piece in a futile effort to see it from the “front.”</p>

<h2>Tender Machines and Soft Structures</h2>

<p>This solo exhibition of work by <a href="https://www.kimemquilts.com" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.kimemquilts.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kim Eichler-Messler</a> combines highly textured hand quilting, the shine of mirrors and sequins, and the hard surfaces of pottery into a cohesive body of work in which the components visually play with one another across the space through color, texture, and shape.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Tender-Machines-Exhibit-Dairy-Barn-Arts-Center-2026.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Tender-Machines-Exhibit-Dairy-Barn-Arts-Center-2026-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7970" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Tender-Machines-Exhibit-Dairy-Barn-Arts-Center-2026-1024x576.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Tender-Machines-Exhibit-Dairy-Barn-Arts-Center-2026-640x360.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Tender-Machines-Exhibit-Dairy-Barn-Arts-Center-2026-768x432.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Tender-Machines-Exhibit-Dairy-Barn-Arts-Center-2026-1536x864.jpg 1536w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Tender-Machines-Exhibit-Dairy-Barn-Arts-Center-2026.jpg 1956w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h3>Tower For Passage</h3>

<p>Subdued versions of primary colors on heavily textured linen form the backdrop for large-stitch hand quilting and the shiny surfaces of judiciously positioned mirrors and sequins, juxtaposing natural fibers against manufactured elements.</p>

<h3>Bearing, Threshold, and Voids</h3>

<p>These stoneware pieces draw on similar shapes and colors from the surrounding textile pieces. Both the hardness of the pottery surfaces and the softness of the textiles are enhanced by the presence of the other element.</p>

<h3>Tender Machines for Unstable Ground</h3>

<p>This collection of identically sized works allows each piece to stand on its own while interacting beautifully with the other canvases. The diversity of hand-stitching techniques allows the thread to create both line and shape on the fabric&#8217;s surface.</p>

<h2>The Inspiration Quilt</h2>

<p>When I first saw the inspiration quilt, I was struck by the painterly effect in the background. The way the colors flowed through the composition was the most dominant aspect, and I was excited to highlight it in my reinterpretation of the image.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/April-Telephone-Tag-Inspiration-Image.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1007" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/April-Telephone-Tag-Inspiration-Image-1007x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7932" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/April-Telephone-Tag-Inspiration-Image-1007x1024.jpg 1007w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/April-Telephone-Tag-Inspiration-Image-630x640.jpg 630w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/April-Telephone-Tag-Inspiration-Image-768x781.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/April-Telephone-Tag-Inspiration-Image.jpg 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 1007px) 100vw, 1007px" /></a><figcaption>Quilt by Maureen Lindway</figcaption></figure>

<h2>My Design</h2>

<p>As I looked closely at the inspiration quilt, I noticed how the colors in the composition formed four sections of dominant colors, with a rosy-rust color at the bottom, followed by a sharper yellow-green, then a grey-violet, and finally a dusty blue. Having the colors towards the top of the quilt become cooler and more grey creates a sense of aerial perspective that helps define the composition.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/April-Telephone-Tag-Inspiration-Image-with-Line-overlay.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1007" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/April-Telephone-Tag-Inspiration-Image-with-Line-overlay-1007x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7935" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/April-Telephone-Tag-Inspiration-Image-with-Line-overlay-1007x1024.jpg 1007w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/April-Telephone-Tag-Inspiration-Image-with-Line-overlay-630x640.jpg 630w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/April-Telephone-Tag-Inspiration-Image-with-Line-overlay-768x781.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/April-Telephone-Tag-Inspiration-Image-with-Line-overlay.jpg 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 1007px) 100vw, 1007px" /></a></figure>

<p>To my eye, these four fields of color were the critical elements in the design, and I decided to embrace minimalism by using only these four colors to piece the quilt top.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Fabric-Pull.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="768" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Fabric-Pull-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7933" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Fabric-Pull-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Fabric-Pull-640x480.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Fabric-Pull-768x576.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Fabric-Pull-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Fabric-Pull.jpg 1650w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h2>Quilting</h2>

<p>In a nod to the painterly effect of the inspiration quilt, I decided to use matchstick quilting, in which matching thread colors extend into neighboring fields of color, creating a subtle filter-like effect.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Telephone-Tag-Month-4-Finished-Quilt.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Telephone-Tag-Month-4-Finished-Quilt-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7937" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Telephone-Tag-Month-4-Finished-Quilt-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Telephone-Tag-Month-4-Finished-Quilt-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Telephone-Tag-Month-4-Finished-Quilt-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Telephone-Tag-Month-4-Finished-Quilt-768x768.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Telephone-Tag-Month-4-Finished-Quilt.jpg 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p>To enhance the effect of the matchstick quilting, I did all the quilting with a heavy 12-weight thread on top and 50-weight in the bobbin.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Thread-Selection.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="459" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Thread-Selection-1024x459.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7934" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Thread-Selection-1024x459.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Thread-Selection-640x287.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Thread-Selection-768x344.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Thread-Selection-1536x689.jpg 1536w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Thread-Selection-2048x918.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h2>Finishing</h2>

<p>To maintain the overall design&#8217;s simplicity, I chose a faced edge finish for the quilt.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Edge-Finish-scaled.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Edge-Finish-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7938" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Edge-Finish-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Edge-Finish-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Edge-Finish-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Edge-Finish-768x768.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Edge-Finish-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Month-4-Telephone-Tag-Edge-Finish-2048x2048.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h2>The Telephone Tag Series</h2>

<p>Below are all four quilts I created for my contribution to the telephone tag series. I am thrilled that I was able to create distinct quilts using techniques reflecting the source image. Techniques that I incorporated include:</p>

<h2>The Inspiration Quilt</h2>

<p>When I received the inspiration image for my third quilt, I was first struck by the painterly background and the strong use of line in the quilting stitches. After studying the source quilt, I decided my composition should embrace three aspects of the design:</p>

<ul><li>The feeling of late autumnal trees on gently rolling hills</li><li>Multiple color shifts in the background, creating a painterly effect</li><li>A strong use of line to move the viewer&#8217;s eye through the composition&nbsp;</li></ul>

<p>Keeping these aspects in mind as my primary goals, I set out to create a design that reflects my quilting style.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Inspiration-Quilt.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Inspiration-Quilt-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7912" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Inspiration-Quilt-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Inspiration-Quilt-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Inspiration-Quilt-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Inspiration-Quilt-768x768.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Inspiration-Quilt.jpg 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption>Quilt by Maureen Lindway</figcaption></figure>

<h2>My Design</h2>

<p>Even though I trained as a painter, it is extremely rare for me to paint on a quilt. However, collage is a close neighbor to painting, and improvisational piecing is my favorite way to create a painterly collage effect while embracing traditional piecing techniques.</p>

<p>By selectively incorporating strong pieced lines and fabric with distinctive linear prints, I could guide the viewer&#8217;s eye around the composition.</p>

<p>Pairing the overall composition with soft waves of linear quilting enhances the feel of gently rolling hills.</p>

<h3>Color</h3>

<p>To encourage myself to use smaller pieces of fabric, thereby creating a background evoking the feeling of paintstrokes, I pulled most of the fabrics for this composition from my scrap fabric bins, with the remaining pieces coming from my stash. The palette includes solids, prints, yarn-dyed wovens, and hand-dyed fabrics.</p>

<p>The dominant colors in this composition are green and blue with accents of violet, pink, and yellow. You may expect to see brown as a dominant color in an autumnal landscape, but I believe an overuse of brown can quickly destroy a composition. This probably stems from my painting background, when, as a student, we were often not permitted to use black or brown paint from a tube. If we wanted to use these colors, we had to mix them, which yielded a very specific palette that often leaned toward deep violets for the darkest areas of a composition.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Improv-Piecing-Process.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Improv-Piecing-Process-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7913" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Improv-Piecing-Process-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Improv-Piecing-Process-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Improv-Piecing-Process-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Improv-Piecing-Process-768x768.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Improv-Piecing-Process.jpg 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h3>Line</h3>

<p>I used line in both piecing and fabric selection to guide the viewer&#8217;s eye through the composition. Selecting only the darkest tree trunks from the inspiration image simplified the composition and gave me a somewhat unexpected four lines to work with. You have probably heard somewhere along the way that you should use odd numbers of key components in your designs. While this is often true, there are ways to break this rule successfully. In this case, the tree trunks work in pairs, almost dividing the overall composition into thirds. The pairs also tilt towards each other at the top of the composition. When combined with the printed stripe in the bottom right corner and the piecing at the same angle at the base of the tree trunk, it creates an implied triangle that guides your eye through the composition.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Quilt-Top-1.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Quilt-Top-1-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7914" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Quilt-Top-1-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Quilt-Top-1-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Quilt-Top-1-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Quilt-Top-1-768x768.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Quilt-Top-1.jpg 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p>Several fabrics in the composition use line in their designs, but the strongest motif is the green-and-gold stripe. When used in the bottom corners of the quilt, the stripes effectively catch your eye when the pieced tree trunks try to push your attention off the edges of the composition, and with the help of the horizontal stripe in the center right, pull your attention back towards the center of the composition.</p>

<h2>Quilting</h2>

<p>For this design, I wanted the quilting lines to enhance a sense of an open, natural space, preferably in a way that enhances the gently rolling hills. The softly curving lines of light aqua quilting create the feel of a breeze moving through the trees. To achieve this effect, I drew several curved lines of varying shapes 1-2 inches apart across the quilt. Since the quilt is so small, I was able to eyeball additional lines of stitching between the first set by quilting halfway between the lines and repeating the process until I was happy with the quilting density.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Mini-Quilt.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="1024" src="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Mini-Quilt-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7915" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Mini-Quilt-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Mini-Quilt-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Mini-Quilt-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Mini-Quilt-768x768.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Mini-Quilt.jpg 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h2>Finishing</h2>

<p>To give the illusion that the composition extends beyond the plane of the quilt, I used a faced edge to finish the quilt.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Edge-Finish.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Edge-Finish-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7916" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Edge-Finish-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Edge-Finish-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Edge-Finish-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Edge-Finish-768x768.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Month-3-Edge-Finish.jpg 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h2>The Inspiration Quilt</h2>

<p>For this project, we all started with nature photos, and the mini quilt I received for my second quilt reminded me of trees surrounding a lake or pond. The background of the image seemed to have three distinct areas:&nbsp;</p>

<ul><li>Water with reflections towards the bottom of the composition&nbsp;</li><li>Land in the middle of the composition</li><li>Sky at the top of the composition</li></ul>

<p>The organic shapes arcing through the center of the composition felt like Autumnal trees with size implying their distance from the viewer.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>My Design&nbsp;</h2>

<p>I decided to focus on three key elements from the inspiration quilt to create my composition:</p>

<ol><li>The background with water, land, and sky</li><li>A sense of space that is created through the tree placement</li><li>Echo quilting emphasizes the shapes in the composition.&nbsp;</li></ol>

<p>My interpretation of the composition is more graphic than the inspiration quilt, with a foundation paper-pieced background and hand-appliquéd oval-shaped tree tops. I experimented a lot with the exact size and proportions of the tree tops because I wanted them to emphasize a sense of depth in the composition.</p>

<p>Since this composition uses a mix of techniques, I drafted the design in AutoCAD LT, which allowed me to develop both the foundation paper-pieced templates and the templates for the appliqué oval tree tops. Color placement in AutoCAD isn’t super accurate (without a lot of extra effort), so I just gave myself a general idea, knowing the real color would come into play with the fabric pull.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Mini-Quilt-Design.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Mini-Quilt-Design-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7885" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Mini-Quilt-Design-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Mini-Quilt-Design-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Mini-Quilt-Design-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Mini-Quilt-Design-768x768.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Mini-Quilt-Design.jpg 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h2>The Fabric Pull</h2>

<p>The simple shapes in my composition allowed me to heighten the color palette visually. When shapes are simplified, we often expect brighter colors, like in comic or children’s book illustration, and I used that expectation to my advantage for this design.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The source quilt used primarily prints in the design, and I wanted to continue that aesthetic, along with a few solids to visually push the background elements back in the composition and highlight the prints in the water and tree tops. One of the trees in the source image had a bold print, while the others employed tone-on-tone designs. I decided to maintain that aspect of the design, but shifted the bold print one tree over.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Fabric-Pull.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Fabric-Pull-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7886" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Fabric-Pull-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Fabric-Pull-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Fabric-Pull-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Fabric-Pull-768x768.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Fabric-Pull.jpg 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h2>Constructing the Quilt Top</h2>

<p>The background with water, land, and sky is foundation paper pieced (FPP), including the placement of the tree trunks, and then finished with the curved seam to add the water element.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Quilt-Top-Base.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Quilt-Top-Base-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7887" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Quilt-Top-Base-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Quilt-Top-Base-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Quilt-Top-Base-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Quilt-Top-Base-768x768.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Quilt-Top-Base.jpg 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p>I printed the tree top shapes on cardstock to use as templates. Before moving forward with the fabric components, I positioned the shapes on the background to observe their interaction with each other in the physical space.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Applique-Layout.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="768" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Applique-Layout-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7888" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Applique-Layout-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Applique-Layout-640x480.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Applique-Layout-768x576.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Applique-Layout-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Applique-Layout.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h2>The Appliqué Process</h2>

<p>For these oval and partial-oval shapes, I decided to use an aluminum foil technique to prepare the pieces. To do this, you cut the fabric about 1/2” larger than the template on all sides. It isn’t necessary to be super accurate at this point. You then cut a piece of foil a little larger than the fabric.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-1.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-1-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7889" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-1-640x360.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-1-768x432.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-1-1536x864.jpg 1536w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-1.jpg 1900w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p>You use the foil to push the fabric edges around the cardstock template, then you press the fabric and foil in place.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-2.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="771" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-2-1024x771.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7890" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-2-1024x771.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-2-640x482.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-2-768x578.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-2-1536x1156.jpg 1536w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-2.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p>This method worked well on pieces with a mix of edges that needed to be turned back and those that remained flat, extending to the edges of the quilt top. It also worked reasonably well on pieces with all of the edges turned under, but methods using a basting stitch to cinch the fabric edges around the template yield a smoother edge with less effort.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-3.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="696" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-3-1024x696.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7891" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-3-1024x696.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-3-640x435.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-3-768x522.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-3-1536x1044.jpg 1536w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Preparing-Applique-3.jpg 1700w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p>With all of the pieces prepared, I pinned the components in place to appliqué the final design.</p>

<div class="wp-block-buttons">
<div class="wp-block-button"><a class="wp-block-button__link" href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/hand-applique-101-how-to-master-straight-lines-corners-and-curves/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Learn More about appliqué</a></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Pinned-Applique.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Pinned-Applique-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7892" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Pinned-Applique-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Pinned-Applique-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Pinned-Applique-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Pinned-Applique-768x768.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Pinned-Applique.jpg 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p>Once the hand appliqué was complete, I trimmed the background fabric and the excess seam allowance turned under on the tree tops.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Back-of-Mini-Quilt-Top.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Back-of-Mini-Quilt-Top-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7893" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Back-of-Mini-Quilt-Top-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Back-of-Mini-Quilt-Top-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Back-of-Mini-Quilt-Top-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Back-of-Mini-Quilt-Top-768x768.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Back-of-Mini-Quilt-Top.jpg 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h2>Quilting</h2>

<p>I liked the idea of using echo quilting on this design, but instead of echoing the tree tops, I decided to echo the edge of the water across the entire quilt and mirror that same shape to create a gridded motif that evolves as it moves across the quilt.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Finished-Mini-Quilt.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="1024" src="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Finished-Mini-Quilt-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7884" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Finished-Mini-Quilt-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Finished-Mini-Quilt-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Finished-Mini-Quilt-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Finished-Mini-Quilt-768x768.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Finished-Mini-Quilt.jpg 1450w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h2>Edge Finish</h2>

<p>This design breaks the quilt&#8217;s edge, so I decided to avoid the visual border of binding and went with a faced edge instead.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Mini-Quilt-Facing.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Mini-Quilt-Facing-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7894" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Mini-Quilt-Facing-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Mini-Quilt-Facing-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Mini-Quilt-Facing-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Mini-Quilt-Facing-768x768.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/February-Telephone-Tag-Mini-Quilt-Facing.jpg 1450w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p>Implementing constraints in your design process is one of the best ways to encourage creativity, so when one of my quilting groups did a challenge earlier this year, I was excited to participate. This particular challenge was the visual equivalent of a game of telephone, with each participant creating a mini quilt to inspire the next person’s design.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Quilt-2.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="1000" src="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Quilt-2.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7879" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Quilt-2.jpg 1000w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Quilt-2-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Quilt-2-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Quilt-2-768x768.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></a></figure>

<h2>The Game of Telephone</h2>

<p>Telephone is a game where one person whispers a phrase to the next, passing it down the line. The last person announces the final phrase—it&#8217;s rarely the original thought, and it&#8217;s often hilarious. For this challenge, the information is passed visually rather than orally, with each participant passing photos of their quilts to the next person.</p>

<h2>How It Works</h2>

<p>We were divided into groups of five. For the first round, we each selected a photograph to send to the next person on the list. For this project, we all used nature photographs we took ourselves to ensure we wouldn’t run into any copyright issues when the quilts are exhibited.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Mackinac-Arch-1-1.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="750" src="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Mackinac-Arch-1-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3875" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Mackinac-Arch-1-1.jpg 1000w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Mackinac-Arch-1-1-640x480.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Mackinac-Arch-1-1-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></a><figcaption>The image I contributed to the Telephone Tag Project</figcaption></figure>

<p>We each spent one month creating a mini quilt based on the initial photograph and sent the quilt image to the next person on the list. We never saw any inspiration except for the mini quilt directly before us in the design order. Our designs could be as realistic or as abstract as we liked, so there was quite an evolution in most of them.</p>

<h2>Timeline</h2>

<p>This challenge ran from January through April, and we had one month to create each quilt.</p>

<h2>The Quilts</h2>

<p>Each group created five collections, each consisting of one photograph and four mini quilts. We never made a quilt inspired by our own image. The quilts were all initially inspired by a nature photograph and finished at 12” square. Beyond those requirements, we could use any quilting techniques or materials.</p>

<h2>My First Telephone Tag Quilt</h2>

<p>The inspiration photograph I received showed a body of water, with a log diagonally across the bottom of the image and a turtle resting near the center of the log.<em> <s>(As of publication, I have not received permission from the photographer to share the original image, so I’m only showing the images that I have adapted significantly in the design process.)</s></em></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephon-Tag-January-Inspiration-Photo.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="768" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephon-Tag-January-Inspiration-Photo-768x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7897" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephon-Tag-January-Inspiration-Photo-768x1024.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephon-Tag-January-Inspiration-Photo-480x640.jpg 480w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephon-Tag-January-Inspiration-Photo-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephon-Tag-January-Inspiration-Photo.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></a><figcaption>Photo by Maureen Lindway</figcaption></figure>

<h2>The Design Process</h2>

<p>The water was highly reflective with a sharp contrast between highlights and shadows, and I wanted that broken feel in the final quilt. I started the design by placing the image in ProCreate and coloring each section of the photo with blocks of color.</p>

<p>My goal was to simplify the image into organically shaped chunks of color, while still keeping the turtle recognizable. For the color palette, I selected the most saturated colors from the original image.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Sketch-1.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="768" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Sketch-1-768x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7870" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Sketch-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Sketch-1-480x640.jpg 480w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Sketch-1-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Sketch-1.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></a></figure>

<p>Once I had a large portion of the image colored, I cropped the image to the final square format.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/12-Inch-sketch.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="900" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/12-Inch-sketch.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7866" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/12-Inch-sketch.jpg 900w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/12-Inch-sketch-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/12-Inch-sketch-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/12-Inch-sketch-768x768.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></a></figure>

<p>To finalize the design, I printed the image at (almost) full scale on 11” x 17” paper. At this point, I cut out each section of color, adjusting the exact lines and shapes as I cut.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Printed-Sketch.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="768" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Printed-Sketch-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7867" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Printed-Sketch-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Printed-Sketch-640x480.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Printed-Sketch-768x576.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-Printed-Sketch.jpg 1150w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h2>Laying Out the Quilt</h2>

<p>I wanted to make sure the quilt would easily finish at 12” square, so I used a 13-1/2” square piece of background fabric as the base for my appliqué design. I added extra fabric to the edges of the paper templates along the outer edges of the square to accommodate the larger square. The fabrics in the center of the design were cut to the exact template size.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I like to design small quilts on pieces of fleece-covered foam core so I can pin directly to the surface when needed.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Fabric-Placement.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="1000" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Fabric-Placement.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7868" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Fabric-Placement.jpg 1000w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Fabric-Placement-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Fabric-Placement-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Fabric-Placement-768x768.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></a></figure>

<h2>Appliqué</h2>

<p>To appliqué, I baste 1/4” from the edges of each piece of fabric. When I turn under the edges as I do the final stitching, the raw edge meets the basting line, leaving a 1/4” gap that reveals the background between the appliqué fabrics. The lines of blue remind me of the shimmering highlights from the original photos.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Applique-Progress.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="1000" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Applique-Progress.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7869" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Applique-Progress.jpg 1000w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Applique-Progress-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Applique-Progress-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Applique-Progress-768x768.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></a></figure>

<h2>Quilting</h2>

<p>Simple quilting keeps the appliqué more graphic, so I decided to use diagonal lines that emphasize the angle of the log placement.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Quilt-2.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="1000" src="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Quilt-2.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7879" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Quilt-2.jpg 1000w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Quilt-2-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Quilt-2-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Quilt-2-768x768.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></a></figure>

<h2>Finishing</h2>

<p>I wanted to maintain the illusion that this design could continue far beyond the quilt&#8217;s edges, so I chose a faced edge to finish the quilt.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Facing.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="1000" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Facing.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7872" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Facing.jpg 1000w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Facing-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Facing-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Telephone-Tag-January-Facing-768x768.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></a></figure>

<p>Do you do a quilting test on a sample sandwich before quilting your final project?&nbsp;</p>

<p>It’s easy to get excited and dive right into quilting a big project, but quilting tests can help us take our quilts from good to great.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilting-Detail.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="768" src="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilting-Detail-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7855" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilting-Detail-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilting-Detail-640x480.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilting-Detail-768x576.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilting-Detail.jpg 1150w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h2>Why Should You Do a Quilting Test?</h2>

<p>Quilting tests can range from basic to complex and provide valuable insights into what we can expect in the quilting process. A quilting test can tell us:</p>

<ul><li>If our tension and machine settings are correct for the materials we are using</li><li>What length of stitches works best for the quilting style</li><li>Which motifs will work with the design?</li><li>The color and weight of the thread that will look the best in the quilt</li></ul>

<p>Many of my quilts rely on thread color and weight as key aspects of the overall quilt design, so testing the thread options helps ensure the final quilt will be a success. Today, I’m sharing an initial test I did for an upcoming quilt.</p>

<h2>Preparing the Test Quilt Sandwich</h2>

<p>The piecing of the new quilt will be simple with light, neutral colors. To test the quilting, I made a block about 9” square that incorporates both of the main colors in the quilt. The design of this block is not the same as the final quilt, but the rectangles give me a decent idea of how the quilting will interact with the fabrics.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilt-Top.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="1000" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilt-Top.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7849" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilt-Top.jpg 1000w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilt-Top-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilt-Top-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilt-Top-768x768.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></a></figure>

<p>Since this is such a small piece, I used 3/4” wide masking tape to mark the lines where I will add colorful quilting. For the finished quilt, I’m planning to use a backing fabric with some color, so I chose a medium-light pink to back this swatch, hoping it will give me an idea of whether it will work on the final project.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilt-Sandwich.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="1000" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilt-Sandwich.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7850" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilt-Sandwich.jpg 1000w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilt-Sandwich-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilt-Sandwich-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilt-Sandwich-768x768.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></a></figure>

<h2>Quilting the Sample</h2>

<p>I started by quilting white lines through the white-pieced rectangles and light grey lines in the mist-colored background. I used 40-weight thread in the white sections, but I think that I’ll ultimately need to go with a 28-weight or even a 12-weight thread to get the effect I want. The grey thread in the mist-colored fabric worked pretty well, but I’m going to look at other thread options to see if there is a slightly warmer grey that may match even better. The 50-weight thread worked great for the background.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Background-Quilting.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="1000" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Background-Quilting.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7851" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Background-Quilting.jpg 1000w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Background-Quilting-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Background-Quilting-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Background-Quilting-768x768.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></a></figure>

<p>Next, I added stripes of my dominant colors using 12-weight thread. I love how these look, but the neon yellow blended into the background just a bit too much for what I’m trying to accomplish.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Initial-Stripes.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="1000" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Initial-Stripes.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7852" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Initial-Stripes.jpg 1000w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Initial-Stripes-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Initial-Stripes-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Initial-Stripes-768x768.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></a></figure>

<p>To emphasize the yellow lines, I decided to wrap some of the stitches with lime green thread. In the two lines closest to the white rectangle, I used a 12-weight thread to wrap the machine quilting stitches. In the next two lines, I used 28-weight thread, then 50-weight thread in the following line. If you had asked me if I would ever wrap stitching with 50-weight thread before this quilting test, I would have laughed, but this is exactly what this quilting needs to create a subtle gradient.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Stripes.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="1000" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Stripes.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7853" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Stripes.jpg 1000w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Stripes-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Stripes-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Stripes-768x768.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></a></figure>

<p>I’m thinking about adding wrapped stitches to some of the pink lines as well, but I need to order some thread colors to experiment with.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilting-Detail.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="768" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilting-Detail-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7855" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilting-Detail-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilting-Detail-640x480.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilting-Detail-768x576.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Quilting-Detail.jpg 1150w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p>Finally, I added a couple of sections of perpendicular stitches to get a general idea of how these intersections will work in the final quilt.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Plaid-1.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="957" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Plaid-1-1024x957.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7854" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Plaid-1-1024x957.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Plaid-1-640x598.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Plaid-1-768x718.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quilting-Test-Plaid-1.jpg 1050w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p>With the quilting finished, I checked out the backing fabric and was pleased with the results. I used all matching 50-weight thread in the bobbin for each color, and the pink fabric showed the stitching without overwhelming it or showing through the front of the quilt sandwich.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Ceiling-Quilting-Test-Back.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="768" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Ceiling-Quilting-Test-Back-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7856" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Ceiling-Quilting-Test-Back-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Ceiling-Quilting-Test-Back-640x480.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Ceiling-Quilting-Test-Back-768x576.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Ceiling-Quilting-Test-Back.jpg 1150w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p>Once I get more thread in, I will probably add to this test or make a new one to ensure I get a result that works well on the final quilt.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I was pleasantly surprised by how straightforward the new machine was to learn, but I only recently decided to take a look at its machine embroidery capabilities. I am lucky to have a friend nearby who owns the embroidery module for the same machine, and was happy to loan it to me to try out before I commit to purchasing the embroidery components for my machine.</p>

<h2>Experimenting with Machine Embroidery&nbsp;</h2>

<p>For my first few machine embroidery experiments, I knew there were certain skills I wanted to learn, and I wanted to figure out if I found the process useful and fun or annoying.&nbsp;</p>

<p>My goals for the first few designs included:</p>

<ul><li>Set up the machine for embroidery</li><li>Load fabric and stabilizer in a hoop</li><li>Choose a design and make sure it fits into the hoop</li><li>Navigate the menus of built-in embroidery designs</li><li>Stitch a single color motif</li><li>Stitch a multi-color motif</li><li>Download a purchased design and open it on the machine.</li><li>Try a densely stitched motif</li><li>Stitch more than one motif in a hoop</li><li>Move and rotate motifs to interact with each other</li><li>Use an embroidery design to quilt</li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Embroidery-Supplies.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="768" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Embroidery-Supplies-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7825" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Embroidery-Supplies-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Embroidery-Supplies-640x480.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Embroidery-Supplies-768x576.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Embroidery-Supplies-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Embroidery-Supplies.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h3>Design 1</h3>

<p>The first design was mostly about making sure I could set the machine up on my own, load the hoop with fabric and stabilizer, and get everything positioned and sized properly for stitching.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I wanted to keep the actual design relatively simple while still filling most of the hoop. I ended up choosing a mostly linear motif that was built into the machine.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="Machine Embroidery of a Linear Design" width="1100" height="619" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Jlsv-NOz30E?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p>For the thread, I decided on 40-weight Aurifil. Most machine embroidery threads are shiny, but I tend to prefer the more matte look of cotton. Since Aurifil was originally designed as an embroidery thread, I decided this was a good place to start.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Linear-Machine-Embroidery-test.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="768" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Linear-Machine-Embroidery-test-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7826" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Linear-Machine-Embroidery-test-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Linear-Machine-Embroidery-test-640x480.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Linear-Machine-Embroidery-test-768x576.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Linear-Machine-Embroidery-test-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Linear-Machine-Embroidery-test.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p>The first round worked perfectly! I really thought it would take a couple of tries to get a workable design, but the first one turned out great.</p>

<h3>Design 2</h3>

<p>Now that I had one design stitched, I was ready to add one more skill. For the second motif, I selected a flower with four colors to practice changing thread.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/First-Multi-Color-Design-Machine-Embroidery.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="1000" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/First-Multi-Color-Design-Machine-Embroidery.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7836" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/First-Multi-Color-Design-Machine-Embroidery.jpg 1000w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/First-Multi-Color-Design-Machine-Embroidery-640x640.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/First-Multi-Color-Design-Machine-Embroidery-150x150.jpg 150w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/First-Multi-Color-Design-Machine-Embroidery-768x768.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></a></figure>

<h3>Design 3</h3>

<p>Everything has gone well so far, so I decided to purchase and download a design. I like many Tula Pink designs, so I headed to OESD and selected <a href="https://oesd.com/Butterfly-Kisses-4/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://oesd.com/Butterfly-Kisses-4/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Butterfly Kisses 4</a>. Since I was still in the experimental phase of machine embroidery, I purchased a single motif rather than a multi-design package. I selected this particular design because:</p>

<ul><li>I could fit at least two butterflies into a single hoop</li><li>The thread colors worked with what I had on hand</li><li>The motif was denser than what I had tried before</li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Selecting-Thread-for-Machine-Embroidery.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="768" height="1024" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Selecting-Thread-for-Machine-Embroidery-768x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7827" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Selecting-Thread-for-Machine-Embroidery-768x1024.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Selecting-Thread-for-Machine-Embroidery-480x640.jpg 480w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Selecting-Thread-for-Machine-Embroidery-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Selecting-Thread-for-Machine-Embroidery.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></a></figure>

<p>The design included thread information for each design in the collection, and I printed off the page with the motif I purchased. Having this list made thread selection super easy.</p>

<p>I spent a decent amount of time learning to position two motifs within the hoop and rotating them so they have some degree of visual interaction.</p>

<p>Watching the designs stitch out is mesmerizing.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="Butterfly Machine Embroidery Time-lapse" width="1100" height="619" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/aYSQu1-W6ig?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p>The final color on this motif really makes the overall design come together.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Butteryfly-Machine-Embroidery-Progress.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="768" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Butteryfly-Machine-Embroidery-Progress-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7829" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Butteryfly-Machine-Embroidery-Progress-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Butteryfly-Machine-Embroidery-Progress-640x480.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Butteryfly-Machine-Embroidery-Progress-768x576.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Butteryfly-Machine-Embroidery-Progress-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Butteryfly-Machine-Embroidery-Progress.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p>As the motif stitches, the machine screen highlights the color being stitched, and the cursor moves as the needle position shifts.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Screen-During-Embroidery.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="583" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Screen-During-Embroidery-1024x583.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7828" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Screen-During-Embroidery-1024x583.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Screen-During-Embroidery-640x365.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Screen-During-Embroidery-768x438.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Screen-During-Embroidery-1536x875.jpg 1536w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Screen-During-Embroidery.jpg 1850w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p>I’m really pleased with the way this design stitched out, and at this point, I had pretty much decided that there are lots of possibilities for using machine embroidery in my work.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Completed-Machine-Embroidery-Butterflies.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="768" src="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Completed-Machine-Embroidery-Butterflies-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7824" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Completed-Machine-Embroidery-Butterflies-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Completed-Machine-Embroidery-Butterflies-640x480.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Completed-Machine-Embroidery-Butterflies-768x576.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Completed-Machine-Embroidery-Butterflies-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Completed-Machine-Embroidery-Butterflies.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h3>Design 4</h3>

<p>To round out my first set of experiments, I decided to use an embroidery motif to quilt a section of fabric. I know you can use the embroidery function to stitch motifs specifically intended for quilting, but I’m unlikely to do that since I have a computerized longarm. However, I wanted to see a moderately dense embroidery design stitched onto a quilt sandwich.</p>

<p>I used some off-white fabric with a bit of shine, paired with white thread, and I was really pleased with the overall effect.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Embroidery-Quilting-Sample.jpg"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="768" src="https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Embroidery-Quilting-Sample-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7830" srcset="http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Embroidery-Quilting-Sample-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Embroidery-Quilting-Sample-640x480.jpg 640w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Embroidery-Quilting-Sample-768x576.jpg 768w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Embroidery-Quilting-Sample-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http://thenotsodramaticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Machine-Embroidery-Quilting-Sample.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p>I still have a lot to learn about machine embroidery, but this series of experiments has helped me decide that I’m ready to invest in the equipment to get started!</p>
