The port city of Shanghai, now China’s most populous, had a thriving jazz scene prior to Communist control in 1949. Now, with economic restrictions relaxed and development booming, the scene is coming to life again — at least it would seem, from news about Shanghai jazz musicians lately. The that vocalist (and JazzSet host) Dee Dee Bridgewater made not long ago while doing an interview with NPR’s Tell Me More. When asked by host Michel Martin about her upcoming projects, she mentioned that she was producing a new album by trumpeter Theo Croker — it’ll be the first recording project on her own label.

April 18th 2010, The free Debut Series concert at the Greg L. Reese Performing Arts Center in the East Cleveland Public Library has become a JazzFest staple. Kicking off the show this year was a quartet of Oberlin grads led by trumpeter Theo Croker. With a deep, full tone recalling Ron Miles, Croker favored slow trills that often worked in consort with electric bubbles gurgling from keyboardist Sullivan Fortner’s Fender Rhodes. On piano, Fortner launched forceful, angular attacks that included classical and Latin shifts as well as strumming of the instrument’s strings. While the group stuck mostly to original Croker compositions, including the swirling “Meditations,” wild “Transcend” and anthemic ode to President Obama, “Change,” it also gave an inspired reading of “My Funny Valentine” that started from a sensitively fragile, warbling trumpet solo and steadily grew darker until succumbing to a mournful piano passage.

Theo Croker has been making waves in his adopted hometown of Shanghai (he’s originally from the United States) for years.

The annual Shanghai Jazz Festival has been picking up steam in recent years, and 2010 looks to continue that trend. From big names to brand new bands, this festival provides the perfect opportunity to check out the rapidly growing jazz presence in Shanghai. What’s particularly wonderful about this type of music is that you can truly enjoy it whether you’re a jazz aficionado or a brand new listener.

As the festival grows, bigger acts have hopped on board. So who are the names being talked up this year? Theo Croker has been making waves in his adopted hometown of Shanghai (he’s originally from the United States) for years. You probably know by now that he’s the grandson of the famous Doc Cheatham (who won numerous Grammy awards for his work), but Croker has certainly made a name all by himself. His unique sound and jaw dropping trumpet skills make him a must-see at this year’s festival.
