Latest Bushwick Art Fair Is a Bit of a Circus

Since it was announced that Bushwick Open Studios will be taking place in October and not on their usual summer date, a couple fledgling fests have tried to fill the void. There’s been the Bushwick Arts Festival, which was a bit of a letdown, and the Bushwick Galleries Association’s Hot Summer Nights of extended hours, which are great but for galleries only. So when we heard tell of a new Bushwick art festival called the Bushwick Open Art Fair, we were skeptical. What would make their “Bears on Bicycles”-themed fair different from the other upstarts? But then the organizers told us they’re “currently looking into the permits required to have live animals at the show.”

That’s right, Marina Reiter of the East Village’s Studio 26 Gallery and Doug Hollier of Bushwick’s New Apostle Gallery are taking the “Bears on Bicycles” theme for serious. And while they’re planning to throw the fair concurrent to BoS and not before (86 more sleeps!), we wanted to know more. (If only to bask in the irony that the year BoS reschedules in order to seem less circus-like, a circus-themed art fair attempts to ride its coattails.)

Reiter, an abstract foil painter originally from Moscow, and Hollier, a post-pop artist originally from England, are both practicing artists in Bushwick and have seen their fair share of… fairs. In fact, the last time we bumped into Hollier, whose murals grace the facades of various Brooklyn buildings, he was showing off his clever portraits of David Bowie and Iggy Pop at Select Fair. “We have a good knowledge of the international art fair scene and how it’s kind of developed over the last 10 years,” he told us more recently, adding that a fair is where he met Reiter last December– at Aqua Art Miami.

They’ve kept in touch since then, and while walking near Hollier’s Starr Street home one night, remarked that the defunct window frame manufacturing building across the street would make for a fine art fair venue. “That’s how the idea got started,” said Hollier. Then in another conversation– Hollier doesn’t know how they got on the subject– Reiter mentioned that circuses in China and Russia still have performing bears on bicycles. “So we came up with the idea of calling it ‘Bears on Bicycles’ and giving it sort of a circus extravaganza theme,” he said. The art needn’t be circus-themed, but there will be circus decor and they’re in talks with several performance houses and individual performance artists.

“Although Bushwick has got a big visual arts scene it’s also got a very established performing arts scene. A lot of that is straight-up circus-style stuff,” explained Hollier. Reiter added: “If you go to a lot of performing venues in Bushwick, you come across a lot of carnival scenes, performances, burlesque. This is everything that comes to mind when you mention ‘Bushwick performing arts.’ So we thought that would be a really good idea for the first inaugural edition of the art fair, that kind of embodies the Bushwick performing arts atmosphere.” Not to mention Hollier is a bit of a Barnum & Bailey history buff, regaling us with how up until the ’50s, the “Greatest Show on Earth” stopped its big tops near Myrtle/Wyckoff. He’s also “personally fascinated by [P.T. Barnum’s] originally advertising strategies.” Erego the live animal permit enquiries.

Hollier said the inspirational window manufacturing building has been promised to a wall-climbing gym developer, but they found an approximately 20,000-square-foot former commercial/industrial facility between the Morgan and Jefferson L train stops. They launched their website Friday, are now accepting exhibitor applications, and are hoping to see submissions from both New York and international galleries. “We want to engage the blue chip galleries, but instead of showing just the typical expo-style convention center model, we want to incorporate the Bushwick scene,” said Reiter, with Hollier adding that “that’s the kind of key point. It’s giving international blue chip galleries the opportunity to present their artists’ work in the current avant-garde Bushwick scene, and creating a Bushwick theme that they’re not going to get in Switzerland, they’re not going to get in Asia, they’re only going to get it in Bushwick.”

According to a press release, “Bears on Bicycles” will commence with an invitation-only VIP Preview Extravaganza on Thursday, September 29th at 3 pm. The VIP Preview Extravaganza will run until 6 pm, at which time the art fair will open to the public. The fair is slated to run through Sunday, October 2nd.

Some context for people wondering what this is about.

Wednesday 7th, at 11am, 3 people entered "Charlie Hebdo" a very well known French satirical newspaper and shot 12 people with kalashnikov. Charlie Hebdo is also known, for their caricatures of the prophet Mahomet.

"Je Suis Charlie" means, "I Am Charlie" and is a message of support to the newspaper.

This is obviously a very short sum-up.

Just a small precision (I am French and following media closely):

- Two people assaulted the office, and killed 10, wounded 11 (4 of which considered critical).

- They furthermore killed 2 police officers on their way out, one of them point blank as he lay wounded and was asking for mercy (do yourself a favor and don't look at that witness video. I mean it. NSFL).

- They are on the loose and are reported armed with automatic weapons and a rocket launcher. No kidding.

- Their car was found in a suburban ghetto (Pantin, in Seine-saint-denis)

It's important to also note that they have killed four of the main illustrators of the paper. It will be very hard for them to overcome that.

It will probably survive, actually. Many people will buy the journal in the next few weeks, even if they never read it before. There are many talentuous cartoonists that can help for a few months if needed. And even without that, how could the French government let that journal fail in the next weeks ? It would be a very negative symbol; that would mean "they" won.

Fridge Art Fair was born on New York’s Lower East Side in May 2013, making it’s debut – under the tagline “Can you fit into the Fridge?” -- at Kazuko Miyamoto’s small but storied storefront, Gallery OneTwentyEight. Jon Tsoi Solo Exhibition at Tally Beck Contemporary

Tally Beck Contemporary will present the first solo gallery exhibition at Tally Beck Contemporary for Chinese painter Jon Tsoi. Jon Tsoi’s solo exhibition, Father of Blindfold Art Medicine, will open, with a special performance by the artist, on Wednesday, June 11 and run through July 27, 2014.

Although this exhibition will be Tsoi’s first solo exhibition at Tally Beck Contemporary, Father of Blindfold Art Medicine will be his sixteenth solo exhibition in New York City. The show will feature approximately 16 acrylic and mixed media works on canvas. Tsoi’s work explores the use of art as holistic medicine to restore balance of body, mind, and spirit in the viewer. His work fuses Chinese medicine practices and Taoist philosophy to restore the balance of yin and yang through “Universal Life Energy.” Tsoi’s inquisitive nature prompted him to make the connection between meditation, spirituality, and healing with closed eyes. Because of this connection, Tsoi began making works while blindfolded and creates his pieces without the use of sight. He describes the creation of art as an internal journey that results in mystery. During his blindfolded performances, Tsoi relies on guidance from the energy of the universe to create channels for movement through cuts made in the canvas with a knife. This energy force also guides the color palettes to restore yin and yang through balance of a mental, physical, or spiritual condition.

Jon Tsoi currently lives in Connecticut and has exhibited work there as well as in New York City, New Jersey, and Florida. Tsoi is originally from China and studied in Sichuan. After moving to the United States in 1979, he attended classes at Montclair State University, and the Art Students’ League of New York in the early 1980s. As a certified acupuncturist, Tsoi consciously makes connections between art making and viewing with Chinese medicine practices and Taoist Philosophy.

Father of Blindfold Art Medicine will open at Tally Beck Contemporary, 42 Rivington Street, New York, on Wednesday, June 11, 2014, with an opening reception from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. featuring a special performance by the artist and cocktails by Mizu Shochu 美鶴乃舞 and Tiger Beer. The reception will begin at 6 p.m., and the performance will begin at 7:30 pm.

It’s an interesting commentary on the state of the photo industry that one of today’s more revered picture editors doesn’t work at a traditional media company. Though Mike Davis was twice named Newspaper Picture Editor of the Year (POYi and BOP), and spent time at National Geographic and The Oregonian, for the past four years he’s primarily been a consultant, working directly with photographers on everything from editing finished bodies of work to advising them while a series is in progress in order to fill holes in their narratives. Last fall, he also became an adjunct professor and the Alexia Tsairis Chair for Documentary Photography at Syracuse University.

Being in the unique position of collaborating with a variety of photographers, who have recently included Diana Markosian, Lynn Johnson, Zun Lee, Sol Neelman, Ivan Kashinsky and Karla Gachet, gives Davis a keen insight on the direction the industry is headed.

Considering the current media landscape, in which viewers are inundated with imagery, Davis believes strongly that photography with a “voice” has a better chance of breaking through the clutter. “It’s always been true, I guess, that the uniqueness of a photogra- pher and the photographer’s voice ... is what got people hired, it’s just more true now,” he explains. Davis finds the old idea that a photographer should be an impartial observer of events no longer applies. Instead, he believes the photographers whose work is sought after today “are powerful in what they say [and] in how they take a photograph.”

Finding your own photographic voice can be difficult, he notes, though he likens it to a light switch being turned on: “Whether a light comes on is dependent on the person. Some people don’t have a lot of ‘self’ to explore or to express, so even though they may try, it’s not going to happen. But obviously unless you never know that is a goal, then you’ll never go there.” For Davis, this is the difference between “molding” your work to a client’s needs versus having a client hire you for the “unique way in which you perceive the world through your photographs.”

Davis advises both his students at Syracuse University as well as emerging and professional photographers to create powerful and varied bodies of work that are “like the work you want to do.” Now more than ever, he notes, you will be hired based on the work you are currently shooting. “It’s a somewhat simplistic notion, but that’s what distinguishes [a photographer] ... compared to the old days of producing a general portfolio of work.”

He encourages the photographers he works with to explore their subject matter in a way that is “dynamic and dimensional.” Davis explains, “The assumption is [that] the more complex the ‘why’ is, the more interesting the ‘how’ can be and the more directed [the images] will be.”

Additionally, a body of work should explore a subject from all angles. He cites the cliché of a photographer following around one homeless person and creating a single body of work from the images. Davis suggests instead focusing on poverty and the many ways it’s manifested in society. While homelessness can still be a part of the project, he explains, the project may cover other aspects, like the food eaten at a homeless shelter, the places where the homeless sleep, the cardboard signs panhandlers hold.

Equally important is presenting the work in the most emotionally powerful way possible, and also taking into account the platform on which it will be displayed. “I think increasingly you have to think about how you edit a body of work [for] the different places where it will live, and photography can live in so many more different places.” Essentially, every platform requires a different edit: a website, a print portfolio, a photo book, a gallery exhibition, an app. “Each one of [these places] does require a different way of thinking—in that the space where photographs live does have a pretty significant context: how you treat them, how you sequence them, how it feels when one sits next to another.”

For many photographers, Davis creates selections of 12, 20, 40 and 60 images, depending on where the series will be presented. He adds, “a lot of the core relationships between the photographs stay the same but with some variability.”

Having twice edited portfolios that won POYi’s Magazine Photographer of the Year honors, and having three times edited portfolios that earned POYi’s Newspaper Photographer of the Year honors, Davis firmly believes that the sequencing of images can impact how viewers (and contest judges) see them. Many elements are taken into account when Davis sequences images, including color, light, composition and where the subject is in the frame, but he rarely goes into those details with a photographer until a goal of what the work should communicate is set.

Davis strongly agrees with many in the industry who believe that, thanks to the increase in imagery that surrounds us now, the “visual literacy of the world is growing.” That change isn’t necessarily a bad thing, he notes. But it does mean that the quality of work and the way in which it is presented is even more important as a photographer builds his or her career. And it means that getting advice on honing and shaping a project is more valuable than ever.

“I think now there is a greater need for picture editors and people who can craft visual narratives [to] help photographers develop [their work],” Davis says, “at a time when there are fewer of us than there have [historically] been.”

Victoria Alexander is a Canadian painter, born in Montréal who currently lives in the Ottawa Valley region of Ontario. She has shown internationally in venues including, but not limited to, Turkey, Japan, Poland, Austria and New York City. She has a long-standing association with Gallery Onetwentyeight.

“My work compels me to explore the significance of memory, images and experience, and their impact on my life. My materials are most often acrylic paint on canvas, sometimes with ink, often worked in layers to allow optical mix of underlying colours to create the effect of a moving surface. I also work in powdered graphite on paper.

My objective is to create an expressive account of a moment in time, a transitional impulse or the impression of a moment. In the past couple of years I have been painting the natural world that surrounds me. I'm lucky to live in a very beautiful region and it's impossible not to be affected by the environment at hand. I've begun to paint more out-of-doors and to develop the connection between this world and my interior existence. The smaller paintings began as colour exercises during a time of year where outdoor painting was more difficult, but developed into having an importance of their own.”

There will be twenty three paintings and drawings shown, some of these pieces have been developed from studies done in Algonquin Park, a few from the landscape surrounding my home, some involve still lifes done in my studio and one is from subject matter gathered in Northern England.
