It's official, monograms are now in fashion once again. Yet monograms have always been a part of the preppy game of identifications. It was Lisa Birnbach who said it best in the "Official Preppy Handbook," 31 years ago, "Preppies have known it for years: who needs LV or YSL when you can lay claim to a discreet EBW III." Preppies are fiercely proud of their backgrounds and their names in particular, so much so that they will proudly display monograms on just about anything.

Of course, Preps understand that monograms must be used tastefully. The adage of less is more must have been written by a preppy. You will never find a monogram on denim, tennis balls, gardens or the latest fad--automobiles.

Their usual "modus operandi" are eyeglass cases, golf bags, clothing, bags, rings, and many household items.

As to why monograms are suddenly the rage is something of a mystery. One could possibly explain away monograms current appeal on human beings having an inherit need to display personal identification…possibly, or maybe Preps know what the fashion world is now catching on to…monograms are just plain fun. PREPPY DECALS AND LOGOS

PREPPY READS

The Great Gatsby. F. Scott Fitzgerald's timeless masterpiece. Considered by many scholars as on of America's great pieces of literature.
The Catcher in the Rye. Mandatory reading at many a preparatory and should be read by anyone except adolescent boys.
Hotchkiss. How has the Hotchkiss School managed to accommodate a hundred years of unprecedented change a century during which horse-and-buggy trails have become less familiar than the fiery trails of space-bound vehicles, and Victorian propriety has yielded to unabashed self-expression? The short answer carefully; certainly not without considerable tension and the constant need to mediate between the forces of tradition and innovation. Oh yes, also by following the golden rule: do not disturb the cherished memories of alumni and, more recently, of alumnae as well.
God & Man at Yale. In 1951, a twenty-five-year old Yale graduate published his first book, which exposed the extraordinarily irresponsible educational attitude that prevailed at his alma mater. This book rocked the academic world and catapulted its young author, William F. Buckley Jr., into the public spotlight.
Old Money: The Mythology of America's Upper Class. Written by Nelson W. Aldrich, Jr. It is an entertaining and provocative book. Nelson explores the ultimate fulfillment of the American dream of success: the world of that distinctive class of people who have inherited wealth and thereby enjoy the most flagrant form of unearned privilege our democratic society allows. Excellent essays and gossip.
The Paris Review. Our very own George Plimpton co-founded it and that's good enough for most preps.
Nantucket: Island Living. A lovely book, especially helpful during the long winter months.
Sister Parish Designs. A coffee table read on the designs of the eccentric designer and socialite who made "chintz" a household name. This is a great read for those determined to redecorate in the English Country Style, and quite frankly, who isn't.
The Harvard Classics. It was originally known as Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf. It was Eliot who proclaimed that anyone who read 15 minutes a day from a collection of books that could fit on a five foot shelf, would have a proper liberal arts education. We'll take his word for it, but still the classics are a must read...if you have the time.
The Washington Post. This paper made the list because its one time affiliation with Executive Editor and "Old Guard" prep, Ben Bradlee.
Yankee Magazine. The true magazine for the New England prep.
Town and Country. Aside from the great articles, one looks wealthier by simply skimming its pages. A must read for the uber U.H.B

ONE MAN'S PREP WARDROBE

Recently, at a party the hostess asked me what I thought best characterized a male preppy’s wardrobe. I told her I couldn’t speak for everyone and that there were innumerable articles (and several books) on the subject and suggested what I owned personally might provide a general insight.

I informed her that dressing well is tricky --even for us men where our parameters are much more restricted than those of women. It’s easy to get sidetracked, and led into dead-ends. I’ve always tried to dress as simply and correct as possible -- which is, of course, no mean trick. For proof, sit in an airport sometime and count the number of well-dressed men you see parading past (if you can stop staring at the women).

What follows are a series of random probably overly subjective impressions accompanied by some photos. These are clothes that I enjoy wearing and have brought much joy into my life. The preppy garments depicted here are like old friends (Rupert Brooke had it right) although some of these comforting companions are newer and have replaced their earlier counterparts as they’ve either worn out or been distributed to (sometimes grateful) family members

Fortunately, as you know, the list of where a preppy should shop is brief. The list where one should NOT shop could fill a book - if not a public library system.

BROOKS BROTHERS, J. PRESS AND ORVIS: Not much needs to be said here. Stick with these three and you drastically lower your odds of making a faux pas.

LL BEAN? Be selective. Stay with a few sweaters, boots, wool socks, and flannel shirts. Unfortunately, this old company has strayed from the Faith and now could employ the following statement: “Practically all of our products are guaranteed to be made in the People’s Republic of China by slave labor. We stand firmly behind this junk. Not responsible for shoddy quality. Contact Customer Service.”

LAND’S END, EDDIE BAUER, OLD NAVY, THE GAP AND OTHERS? WARNING: Don’t try this at home.

THE CLOTHES:

HEADWEAR: In the summertime, I wear straw Fedora hats such as a white Borsalino with a black band. During the opposite season, I like these toasty wool caps from Vermont Originals -- as well as the tweed cap by Jonathan Richard I picked up in Ireland.

RAINY DAY STUFF: I prefer a Barbour Beaufort jacket in navy for casual damp days; for more formal occasions, I wear a trench coat from Brooks Brothers. For my feet, I slip on LL Bean Gumshoe Thinsulate Boots, or when out in the country green rubber boots (by Hunter of England) to keep me dry.

DRESS SHIRTS: I’m devoted to Brooks Brothers -- 100% cotton with either button-down or forward point collars. Lightweight Brooks Cool shirts are great for humid, hot days. I buy the non-iron versions because I don’t like supporting the local laundry.

HMS BLAZERS: At present, I own six blazers (four Brooks Brothers [two navy, two striped] and two navy ones by Orvis). The Brooks striped version (Photo with a Brooks white non-iron shirt and Purple Label tie) is referred to as a “regatta jacket” and is probably closer to the original coats worn aboard the 19th Century Royal Navy vessel, which reportedly were of navy and white stripes with brass buttons. Obviously, nothing is more versatile than a blazer.

SNOW SHOES: I clump around in LL Bean shearling-lined boots with their heavy wool Ragg Socks. The apotheosis of warmth and comfort.

UBER-CASUAL SHOES: I like to move around in LL Bean Camp Mocs, Sperry Topsiders in either brown or navy, and Sebago Docksides in the same colors.

Never any socks above 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

They say nothing in a man’s wardrobe is more telling than his shoes and ties to indicate his level (or lack of) taste and breeding. The old adage of “show me what a man wears on his feet and puts around his neck and I’ll tell you everything about him” still holds. Here are my serious shoes:

DRESS SHOES: I’ve worn Alden cordovan loafers in burgundy for years -- as well as their black dress shoes. They last forever and can even be refurbished by the company.

The jazzy two-toned Allen-Edmonds “Strawfut” stems from a classic 1950s model. In brown calf leather and linen, this modern update may not be preppy but looks magnificent with summer suits. Gatsby would approve.

TIES: the introduction of Social Primer reversible bow ties for Brooks Brothers has made a major impact on me the past two years; I’ve collected the ones depicted here.

Tons of compliments -- even from total strangers on the street. Women, I think, must subliminally associate bow ties with weddings. ?? The other ties shown are from Ralph Lauren’s Purple Label line.

WINTER SUITS: the navy bead stripe double-breasted suit is by John Cooper Savile Row, London, teamed with a Brooks Brothers Special Order shirt and Churchill dot tie by Ben Silver. All my other suits (mainly Prince of Wales patterns and striped) are by Brooks Special Order. They’ve lasted for decades.

SUMMER SUITS: the same as my winter suits only in a light weight seasonal wool -- Brooks Brothers Special Order again. A blue seersucker suit accompanied by white bucks is brought out to face the dog days.

GO-TO-HELL PANTS AND BEYOND: Three simple rules apply to wearing Go-to-Hell clothing: location, location, location. Country clubs? Yes. Country/Western Bars? No. The former can lead to jovial conviviality, while the latter to a fractured skull in the parking lot. Wear with caution -- and only one at a time.

I only own three items of a Go-to-Hell nature a pair of lime green critter pants with embroidered flies (dear to a fly-fisherman’s heart), a pair of obnoxious electric violet corduroy “supercords” (both by Orvis -- shown here with a Jolly Roger Needlepoint belt by Smathers and Branson), and a bright pink tie (ala The Donald) by Umo Lorenzo of Italy.

COLD SWEATERS:
the LL Bean Norwegian classic is flanked by a pair of heather Shetland wool crewneck sweaters from Scotland. The hand knit Irish fisherman’s sweater is from the Aran Sweater Market on the island.

HOT SWEATERS: In the cool spring and early fall, I throw on a plain navy cotton sweater by either LL Bean or Brooks Brothers.

SHORTS: I wear patch madras versions by Cape Madras (Photo shown with a white Lacoste and red swordfish belt from Leather Man Ltd.), solid Bermudas by Brooks Brothers (11” seam), and a pair of Nantucket Red shorts are all I need to keep the irritating heat at bay.

“PREPPY”BODY INK? Unless you make your living throwing harpoons at terrified, fleeing whales, or are a member of an indigenous New Zealand tribe, or you’re patiently awaiting your execution on Death Row, then you shouldn’t have a tattoo. It couldn’t be more un-preppy -- especially for women. Bad, bad, bad.

RALPH LAUREN “BIG PONY” CLOTHING? A Big Mistake. Same goes for his current outrageously expensive Purple Label line. Preppy clothing is never this unnecessary or overly done -- and these two points may serve as litmus tests.

BELTS: My business belts are by Brooks Brothers in either black or dark brown leather. I do own one luxury belt -- an alligator from Ben Silver in Charleston. For casual wear, I prefer theme belts by either Leather Man Ltd. or Smathers and Branson. I realize that, ideally, someone you know should needlepoint a belt especially for you, but none of the doctors and lawyers I’m related to are into that. Anyway, these really are a delight to wear.

CASUAL PANTS: “Dalton” plain front Khakis by Jack Donnelly are my favorites. In three seasons, I also run around a lot in Nantucket Reds. (Photo shows them with Smathers and Branson Needlepoint “Bonefish” and “Grand Slam” belts). During the winter, I wear heavy corduroy “supercords” by Orvis and LL Bean 1912 Flannel Lined Chinos (Photo with navy “sailfish” belt by Leather Man Ltd.)

TOPCOATS: I have a classic double-breasted camel hair coat from Brooks Brothers and a “mantel” -- a long, navy wool coat with stag horn buttons I purchased in Germany. Euro-prep? No, only kidding.

CASUAL SHIRTS: For summer, I like mesh Lacoste polos, and Brooks Brothers linen or seersucker long sleeved shirts. For cooler conditions, LL Bean Scotch Plaid Flannel shirts are still a good idea.

SWIMWEAR: I’m loyal to the trunks from the French manufacturer Vilbrequin

after all, a preppy has to be modest, and their designs are colorful and fun. Well made too.

That’s pretty much it -- not an overly large or groundbreaking wardrobe by any means, but one that I find gratifying and a pleasure to own and wear.

Then again, if times really get tough I can always just sell all this and start wearing blue jeans, t-shirts, flip-flops and the type of logo mesh baseball caps they sell at truck stops.

ZEN PREP

You may ask what could be further apart and less compatible than Zen Buddhism and the “Preppy” way of life? On the surface -- nothing -- but a closer examination will reveal some surprising similarities, and the odd juxtaposition may not be as outlandish as it first appears.

So then Zen vs. Prep, or Prep and Zen. Z & P. Let’s see if we can use some Dharma (the search for truth)without turning into bums in order to discover some things each have in common -- and don’t.

To clarify, I use the term “Prep” here to encompass all that is well known regarding a specific group of people who adhere to a movement stemming from Northeastern American WASP behavior patterns -- originating in preparatory schools and Ivy League colleges -- who, in turn, initially flatteringly stole their core ideas from upper crust England. In contrast, Zen, of course, is a school of Buddhism characterized by a set of teachings and practices.

Are there major differences between Zen and Prep? Absolutely. Legend has it that the first Zen patriarch, Bodhidharma, spent nine years staring at a blank cave wall, and even cut off his eyelids so he could concentrate better and not miss anything. Contact-lens wearing Preps needn’t go to that extreme to reach their goals -- as we shall see with uncorrected 20/20 vision.

To begin with, both Zen and Prep are essentially ideologies with a consistent set of values and teachings -- interpretations on the best way to the wisest, most natural, spontaneous, and smoothest path through life -- with each emphasizing practical aspects as well. The pair is also comprised of material aspects -- outward manifestations that match their beliefs. In Zen, one surface illustration of this appears in the simplicity of bodily adornment and in Prep to the wearing of “classic” never-changing clothing.

Zen asks us to open our eyes to the wonder of being alive, and although Prep doesn’t reach quite that far, it does emphasize being aware of the kind of life you’re living. So Socrates examined life applies to both.

Simplify, simplify, simplify, urged both Thoreau and Einstein -- two fairly intelligent thinkers. Turn down the stress, free yourself, in other words. And in so doing this very act of simplification is where Zen and Prep coalesce -- nearly touching like the outstretched hands of God and Adam up on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Zen emphatically rejects over-elaborateness -- as does Prep in its penchant toward traditional upper-class patterns of dress and mode of living.

Simplification in Zen leads to peace and tranquility, along with the recognition and acknowledgment of limitations. Likewise, the Prep finds an inner satisfaction knowing that next year’s Milan fashion show will offer nothing new worth purchasing -- nor will the year after that and so on. Choosing a preppy wardrobe and pathway involves a terminus -- a deliberate limit as to what will ever be acceptable or desirable. And there is great comfort in following an aesthetic (or belief system) that tolerates no deviation, and better yet, it renders a potentially chaotic life simple. The need for experimentation (so far as what to put on to face the cold external world or how to act in it) is obliterated. So are some temptations. One’s pure Prep nature is enough. The simple wheel has already been invented, and so one need only slip on that blazer and khakis or a Lily dress, hop on and roll blissfully along with it.

Symbolism plays a significant role in Zen -- as it does to a Prep. The former reveres water (flexibility and purity), incense (selflessness as it consumes itself for others), the candle flame (wisdom), and the circle (completion, no beginning, or end). The Prep symbols (more like logos actually): French open-mouthed crocodiles, happy white whales, pink and green (yin and yang), monograms, and galloping horses with wooden mallet swingers aboard.

Zen’s emphasis on the direct transmission of information from Master to student rather than reliance on a scripture mirrors the mostly tacit way Preps are taught by their families. All one needs to know is expertly passed down by merely observing one’s surroundings. What is vital awaits the acolyte who only needs to seek the truth. And luckily, in the right Prep homes this is abundantly clear and on display 24/7.

Striving to “become” in Zen doesn’t exist -- one already IS everything (now if we could only truly believe that how much improved our hectic lives would be). Similarly, the fully realized Prep will see no need to expand the boundaries of his (or her) philosophy or aesthetic views. Doing so would be unnecessary and could only lead the believer into error. The Prep supermarket offers its’ all natural-fabric-wearing shoppers a meager, but well thought out variety of goods and concepts, thereby making shopping a snap and the express line quick.

Zen readily accepts the harmonious changes in the seasons -- as do Preps who welcome the springs and autumns with alacrity and greatly enjoy the rotation of their wardrobes -- a ritual of unpacking and packing that extends through life. Bright madras gladly gives way to somber wool, light deck shoes to heavier Bean Boots, and tennis racquets to skis. And vice-versa. By so doing, we spend our lives reacting to the predictable tilting of this planet’s axis.

Ironically, both the Prep exemplar and the Zen practitioner like having fun. Lots of it. It’s just that their ideas of enjoying themselves differ. For the Zen Man enjoyment is brought about by spending time sitting zazen (seated meditation), arranging flowers, scribbling a haiku poem, cultivating a rock garden, accepting and embracing the natural world, wall-gazing and deeply contemplating the unfathomable Koan riddles -- whereas the Prep may derive the same exhilaration from his or her hedonistic tailgating, drinking G & Ts and Bloodies with friends, or dancing uninhibitedly at a Charity Event in a new dress with matching accessories. Preps costume themselves for happiness as best they know it.

The Prep and Zen schemas each place value on their respective visions of enlightenment (satori or glimpsing into the real nature of existence); for the former this may evidence itself in avoiding purchasing inferior items from Eddie Bauer, J. Crew, or the LL Bean Signature collection, and for the latter in realizing that she already possesses everything within herself. Zen views enlightenment as finally freeing oneself from the incessant merry-go-round of births and rebirths. Nirvana. Yes, spelled just like the Seattle grunge band -- Nirvana. Being Prep brings forth an enlightenment that liberates one from the bondage of ever changing opinions, beliefs, and fashion whims -- even temptingly, drastically marked down sale items.

Zen and Prep put their emphasis on THIS world, and how best to spend ones given span on earth -- for it is only in the world of objects that we can have time, space and selves -- as T.S. Eliot once sagely observed. (A friend once told me that after this is all over he intended to meet St. Peter at the Pearly Gates wearing his well-worn, salt-water bleached Nantucket Reds and soup stained Hotchkiss tie. Will this qualify him for entrance? Maybe -- if they have a dress code.) Anyway, a person’s ordinary, mundane everyday life should be sufficient for everyone. This world contains more than its share of complexities and wonders and both Z & P devote themselves to analyzing and addressing them in their own fashion.

In conclusion, one may very well then ask could a Zen Buddhist Monk ever become a Preppy? A seemingly absurd question, but one, I think, worth considering. It’s possible, although the Zen Master would have to plunge his shivering bare toes into the icy materialistic stream more than he’d want. So I think the answer is probably no, the formers disinterest in the Prep world’s trappings would preclude that. And moreover, too many incongruities would surface; for example, to witness a bald, robed individual in sandals tranquilly shopping and sifting through the merchandise at Brooks Brothers or J. Press would create quite a stir. But it would be entertaining spectacle, wouldn’t it? Envision the Dali Lama trying on a pair of garish Go-to-Hell pants along with a button-down pink oxford. Then again, this question may also be answered by claiming that a mild practitioner of Zen (one who merely spends occasional time in meditation) would have no trouble being a Prep. Some already are.

Conversely, if Preps wanted to follow the total Zen path to enlightenment, they could give up everything, scissor their credit cards, donate all their possessions to the Salvation Army, and enter a monastery, but this is highly unlikely given the fact that his or her inculcation into the green and pink value system began from the newborn’s rocking cradle. Besides, sacrificing this much known comfort and satisfaction for the unknown rubs against human nature.

So, in the end, the essence of Zen and Prep boils down to just two ways of getting the most out of living.

Simple.

IRON MATT RUTHERFORD

Will Annapolis’s own Matt Rutherford go down in history as one of the great sailors or just a crazy guy with too much time on his hands? The avid sailor single-handedly sailed across the north Atlantic eventually reaching England. While on his 32 foot Pearson, he ventured through Northern Europe, down the coast of Africa, and racked up 200 frequent sailing miles up the Gambia River before returning to Annapolis by the Trade Wind route.

This time around, Matt Rutherford has chosen to do what has not been done before. Matt is sailing east to west through the Northwest Passage, alone. The amazing thing about this voyage is Matt is using a 27 foot Albin-Vega donated to his charity, “The Chesapeake Regional Assessable Boating” aka CRAB.

Matt has been working with the organization, located in Annapolis that helps disabled persons to get out and enjoy the water. This challenge is not just a personal one for Matt it is aimed at raising money for CRAB. He is accepting sponsorship in the form of ‘money for miles’ and all donations will go to supporting CRAB.

Matt began this ambitious voyage in June and hopes to complete the 23,000 nautical miles. Thus far, he made it through the Northwest Passage, and even saw Russia. He is now heading for Cape Horn and hoping to round it by March 1, 2012. Then he will be heading up the east coast toward the Chesapeake Bay. This voyage will take roughly 10 ½ months to complete at 80 miles per day.

This is a tremendous feat and test of will by a guy who literally taught himself to sail. Matt, we are rooting for you back here in Annapolis. God Speed!!!

TO BIT OR NOT TO BIT

Horses are such amazing animals that it always baffles me as to why some horse enthusiast choose to hurt them. Most of the time, the unnecessary pain infliction is from people who are just not thinking, or taught these barbaric and outdated methods.

This brings up the topic of horse bits. It still amazes me that there is still a school of thought that a bigger bit should be used for training, sometimes on horses that are barely 2 years old. These bits, which fit squarely into the horse’s mouth, can do the opposite of their initial intent. First, a bitted bridle hurts and frightens a horse. For those that believe this technique is fine, place a piece of metal in your mouths and have someone jerk, pull and yank at it. I think you will get the picture. When the bit hurts, the horse will defend itself by biting at it thus, taking the control away from the rider. Then we wonder why the horse is not responding favorably. It is not the horses fault. It is the rider and that is the mark of poor horsemanship.

In a nutshell, BITS DO NOT CONTROL HORSES! They only hamper Performance. By removing the bit, the horse can be happier and perform better.

There isn't a great deal of modern literature about us Preps, so when one was brought to my attention, I had to check it out.
It's a novel by the talented Robert Reichardt and honestly, it's a very entertaining read. I'm sure readers will thoroughly enjoy his wonderfully written and colorful characters.

Here's a brief teaser to wet your whistle:

Laced with wit, sophistication and humor, this novel about preppies is filled with colorful characters leading frustrating lives. Set in the resort town of Ketchum, Idaho, the story revolves around a young, insecure, former lacrosse star who owns a fly-fishing shop, his demanding preppy wife, and a bungling older preppy who’s recently moved west to escape his troubles by trout fishing.

Eric Berensen (the fly-fishing shop owner) is a lame former lacrosse star at an unnamed college (Colgate) who has married over his head into an old east-coast family. His preppy debutante wife, Corkie (an elementary school teacher and yoga and riding enthusiast), attempts to transform him into her version of a preppy -- something he has no intention of becoming. More conflict arises due to her longing for a child -- much to his dismay. To complicate matters, a lovely divorcee (Brooke Lowell) shows up with the intention of seducing the troubled Eric who also struggles with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

The young couple befriends an aging preppy named Kip Noll III who’s recently arrived in town. He becomes known as “the Preppy” because of his classic New England dress and mannerisms. Despite a fine social pedigree, a charming personality and an Ivy League degree, Kip’s made a total shambles of his life (financial and two divorces) and is now eagerly awaiting a large inheritance from his Aunt Caroline to rescue him. Unfortunately, his unethical sister, Topsy (a Seven Sisters graduate) from Old Lyme, Connecticut, has other plans. Ironically, an outrageous long-distance legal battle ensues.

Fragments of Chuck Berry’s old tune, “No particular place to go,” serves as the novel’s background theme song, as each of the characters seek out their own “Particular Place” in life after prep school. Similarly, Izaak Walton’s, The Compleat Angler, forms the philosophical backdrop for the fly-fishing aspects of the story.

The narrator’s introduction of himself in the middle of the novel comes as something of a surprise.

Robert was gracious enough to let me pick his mind and get his thoughts on his new book, preppies and what he hopes to achieve.

The Preppy Times: Hello Robert, I must say, what an interesting title for your book. How did you choose that name?

Robert Reichardt: I thought the title “The Preppy and the Trout” encompassed something of what the book was about -- preppies living in a natural environment, no longer in school -- that sort of thing.

TPT: What made you decide to write the book?

R.R: Last summer, I was on vacation in Ketchum, Idaho and thought it would be a unique setting for a novel. Then the problems arose: what would it be about, who would the characters be, what kind of lives would they be leading, what were their past stories and what would be the conflicts besetting them? Somehow, I stumbled upon the idea that they would be preppies -- composites of people I’ve known, and then a lot of autobiographical material gradually got grafted on as well.

TPT: How long did it take to write The Preppy and The Trout?

R.R: About a year. The writing is easy, it’s the thinking about what to say that’s the catch. As the old saying goes: “Sometimes I sits and thinks, and other times I just sits.” I’m a big believer in revising -- the beauty is in the re-writes. It’s amazing what will pop up on the third or fourth time around. This is a common practice -- I think Flaubert and Fitzgerald each rewrote their masterpieces many, many times.

TPT: When did you start writing?

R.R: I’ve always enjoyed the written word, and consider reading to be one of life’s best (non-fattening) pleasures. I never really did engage in creative writing much until rather recently -- I wrote a group of plays (mostly comedies) a few years ago which are still awaiting to be discovered.

TPT: What was the first piece you ever wrote?

R.R: Years ago I tried to write a novel when I was living in Europe. Of course, it wasn’t any good and so I moved on to other things

TPT: What is your choice of medium to write and why?

R.R: I do a combination of yellow legal pads with pen, and organizing in MS Word. When I think of all the great writers who created their work on typewriters, I have nothing but admiration for them. And to have to rumble through stacks of paper must have been very time-consuming and frustrating as well. No wonder so many of them drank heavily. Writers today are lucky.

TPT: Are there any more books in the works?

R.R: A book of my collected plays (“Karen, The Fuse Lady and Other Plays”) will be coming out in eBook in a few weeks. How’s that for a plug? I also have another novel I’m trying to work the kinks out of -- but that’s a long way off.

TPT: Tell me, who are your favorite writers?

R.R: Of course the list could stretch out, but I’ve always admired Evelyn Waugh for his wit (VILE BODIES, A HANDFUL OF DUST), and so far as sheer brilliance in handling the English language none are better than Lawrence Durrell (THE ALEXANDRIA QUARTET), Aldous Huxley (POINT COUNTER POINT), and all the short stories of John Updike. In the area of the imagination, I like the ironic works of Jose Saramago (BLINDNESS, THE STONE RAFT), and the inventive novels of Kurt Vonnegut. The “preppy” authors John Cheever and John Knowles are in there too.

TPT: What is your favorite genre?

R.R: I like literary novels and also non-fiction histories (THE WILD BLUE by Stephen Ambrose, and THE RIVER OF DOUBT by Candice Millard, for example).

TPT: What was life like for you growing up?

R.R: I grew up in a Brooks Brothers and J. Press milieu and so this gave me a pretty good insight into the lives and psychologies of the preppies which people “The Preppy and the Trout.”

TPT: What are your thoughts on Preps in society today?

R.R: In recent years, there’s been an attempt to water down and extend the shoreline as to what constitutes “preppy.” Obviously, this is being perpetrated by companies with no history of being preppy who only have the bottom line in clear view. To them, preppy is merely a passing fad which might or might not be carried next season (depends on the sales figures). Many consumers who would like to partake in the preppy schema are being grossly misled as to what it’s all about. The recent unnecessary catastrophic sequel to a classic book hasn’t helped much either. And there’s also been a denigrating, mocking attitude towards preppies coming from certain quarters of society. Let’s face it, contemporary America is a slovenly culture with the majority running around looking pretty bad. A well dressed person with taste and class is looked upon with suspicion (if not with total incomprehension). It’s just the opposite of the 1920-1950s when even factory workers tried to dress well and present a positive image. Of course, preppies aren’t going to discard their Nantucket Reds, topsiders, signet rings, Lillys, bow ties, LL Bean Norwegian sweaters, blazers and follow the mob to “fit in.” Preps today are probably farther away from the mainstream than at any other time, but it’s only because the mainstream has jumped off a cultural cliff. To our credit, we haven’t moved an inch and don’t need to.

TPT: In your opinion, what do you feel makes good writing?

R.R: I admire conciseness and brevity in a writer -- someone who doesn’t take five pages to say what could be said in one. Modern Age impatience, I suppose. Knowing how to structure a novel to keep the reader’s interest and curiosity is a welcome quality. I’m also a sucker for extraordinary metaphors and similes -- someone who can make connections between disparate things I never would have thought of. Intellectual depth shining behind the words is another important element. And especially for good writing, I need to have some humor showing up now and then or else I tend to get bored.

TPT: What advice would you give to budding writers?

R.R: Read as much good literature and great writers as you can and eventually by osmosis, some of their thought patterns will take hold in you. Don’t worry too much about being “original” (they say that Shakespeare said it all, and what he left out James Joyce put in) so tell your stories in your own voice.

I advise studying the books on novel writing published by The Writer’s Digest. I’ve found them to be helpful in structuring, plotting, scenes, characters, action, etc.

Although there will always be a market for printed books, the future is tilting heavily toward eBooks. Price and accessibility are big factors. The major publishers have been downsizing for some time, and unless you’re already a celebrity or politician, the days of substantial advances being passed across the table at some posh Manhattan restaurant and major marketing pushes are over. Putting your book out in eBook format allows you access to millions of potential readers globally in a short time.

TPT: Where does Robert Reichardt plan to be in five years?

R.R: We make our plans and the Gods laugh at us. Anyway, like everyone else, I’d like to be healthy and happy.

TPT: Finally, what do you hope readers will take away from your book?

R.R: I hope they will have enjoyed reading it and gotten to know the lives of the characters. The preppies depicted in “The Preppy and the Trout” are human beings first and in a certain social category afterward. This is a book more about psychology and relationships than what the people are wearing. I also would like for the readers to laugh as much as possible, and to be entertained by the various situations. I’ve attempted to make it as smooth flowing and as easy to read as I could -- nobody wants to trudge through “War and Peace” nowadays.

GOOD EATS AT JACK'S OUTBACK II

Jack's Outback II

Along Route 6a in Yarmouth port, hidden behind buildings and a parking lot sits an eerie Cape Cod eatery known to locals as Jack’s Outback II. Several years ago, it was simply called Jack’s Outback.

Jacks back then was a good wake-up call to those with delusions of grandeur who needed a slice of humble pie. Come to think of it, humble pie might have been on their menu.

First off, the place is hard find unless you are a local and if you blink, you might miss it. The restaurant is set in a large white house typically found on the Cape and honestly, the best breakfast food you will ever get. I am talking about food you would eat at grandma’s home on a Sunday morning, and that would fatten you up in a New York minute.

Yet the real appeal for visitors and one not understood by the local diners, is the odd restaurant rules set up by onetime proprietor, Jack Bragington. These rules are so eccentric that an unaware tourist might think they may have somehow stepped into the twilight zone.

Here is what you could expect on any given day; celebratory hooting and hollering by the staff over tips and confused tourists waiting for someone to take their orders, at Jacks you write your own food ticket and place it on the wheel. You also get your own coffee and silverware and if you do not pick up your food fast enough, expect the wrath of Jack. You were also expected to wipe down your own table and pay with cash, no credit cards allowed.

Think Mayberry in New England where everyone has gone crazy and you will have a feel for the place. Honestly, it is all in good fun and no one took Jack seriously.

That was then. Jack has since passed away, God rest his soul. Also gone are the crazy antics of the staff. Visitors now place orders the conventional way. It is a more restrained restaurant but what has not changed is the awesome food.

The lobster omelets are still top notch, as are their famous popovers, home fries; prime rib and delectable pies. I would advise trying everything on the menu. You will not be disappointed and the portions are huge as well.

Therefore, if you are ever on the Cape and looking for a restaurant with a homey feel, try Jack’s Outback II, and bring your appetite.

FLASHBACK-LAURA ASHLEY-1997

I've always fancied Laura Ashley's Style. I love her very feminine approach to ladies garments. At first glance, she may remind us of our own Lilly Pulitzer, but not quite. While Lilly's style exhibits the Palm Beach Resort look with its burst of colorful floral patterns, Laura exhibits the calm subtlety of the English Countryside.
While cleaning up at my grandmother's home, I stumbled across an old Laura Ashley Catalog, via 1997 and thought I'd share a little of her timeless style.

She was born September 7, 1925 amidst farms and villages in her native Wales. This no doubt had a major influence in her work. In her lifetime, her name became synonymous with simple and gracefulness in women fashions. Her style, which was an influenced by puritan function and Victorian charm, became a favorite amongst a whole generation. "Living quite remotely as I have done," she once said”, I have not been caught up with city influences and we just developed in our own way”. She declared about her success: "It's not really a question of inspiration. What you make as a designer is an expression of yourself. I love music and painting and I prefer life in the country."

A major influence on her dress designing was her uniform as a Wren in World War II. She would later say, "The uniform was a very good quality navy gabardine and you could press it and wear it with a clean white cotton shirt and collar and tie. There was a nice, cheeky little hat and comfortable black leather shoes." It was during this time that she met and married Bernard Ashley, an engineer in 1949.

As fate would have it, while working as a secretary and raising her first two children, she undertook some development work for the Women Institute on quilt work. Taking up the craft, she had learned with her grandmother, part-time she designed headscarves, napkins, table-mats, and tea towels, which Bernard printed on a machine he had designed in an attic flat. The couple had invested £10 in wood for the screen frame, dyes, and a few yards of linen. Very soon after the Ashley’s scarves became a huge success. So much so that Bernard quit his job and devoted all his efforts to his wife.

In 1975 Laura turned down the offer of an Order of the British Empire (she was upset Bernard had not been offered one). The addition of a home in France enabled Laura to go back to her roots of fabric design, and the company launched its home furnishings collections.

Laura and Sir Bernard were a great complement to each other - both inside the business, and in their personal life. Laura had four children, and loved family life, but the expansion of the business meant the need for an escape point, and for creativity. They bought a house in France in the early 1970s. Sir Bernard's qualification as a pilot enabled them to keep in touch with family and business.

The Ashley children were all involved with the business. Sir Bernard Ashley was the company chairperson and Laura kept a close eye on fabrics. The astonishing success of what proved to be the ultimate cottage industry, bought the Ashley’s a yacht, a private plane, a French chateau in Picady, a town-house in Brussels, and the villa Contenta in Lyford Cay, New Providence, Bahamas, just purchased for $8.5 million dollars by TJ Maloney.

Unfortunately, fate would again rear its ironic face again. In 1985, on her 60th birthday, while she was visiting her children in the UK, Laura fell down the stairs and taken to hospital in Coventry, West Midlands; she died 10 days later of a brain hemorrhage.

As you can see by the photos, the style that she created, is not only beautiful but timeless as well.

SIMPLE BOAT ETIQUETTE

There is nothing like hitting the ocean on a bright sunny day. If you are lucky enough to own a boat of your own then you know how fun sailing can be. If you are fortunate enough to have friends who have invited you, then it is important to know a little boat etiquette.

These are some simple little rules for your next sailing excursion.

1. The skipper is always in charge. His/her rules are the ones to follow. Each skipper has a set of rules no matter whom you sail with, and their rules should be adhered.

2. Bring a small gesture of appreciation. Usually this is in the form of food. There is a custom-the captain brings the boat, while the crew brings the food and drink. Before bringing food, remember to keep it simple. There is a lot of work to do on a boat so bring food that is easy to eat.

3. Offer to pay for fuel. More than likely, since you were invited, the captain will decline but it is good etiquette to offer.

4. Wear appropriate clothing. Keep in mind that this isn’t a fashion show so leave those high heels at home. Clothing should be sturdy and utilitarian. Boat or canvas shoes will suffice, and remember to pack warm clothing. Pack them in a soft-sided bag like a duffel when not wearing.

5. Do not drink. Becoming inebriated can lead to a host of problems and many safety issues. Moreover, most of us exhibit a less than desirable image when drunk. Drinking is for bars not a boat.

6. Memorize all safety precautions. You, crew, and the captain’s life may depend on it. The captain has many other tasks to consider. Having a crew member who understands how to avoid a potential problem is one less worry for them.

7. Be considerate. Remember, it is an honor to receive an invitation to someone’s boat. Respect goes a long way.

8. Finally, enjoy yourself. There is nothing more invigorating relaxing and enjoyable as sailing on the open seas. Reap the reward of the experience offered to you, bask in the sun, and enjoy.

LANDS' END WOMEN-SPRING/SUMMER REVIEW

Just the other day I finally went rummaging through the spring/summer catalogs that have been piling up. Lands' End Women was the first one I grabbed. I have perused each item especially the new arrivals and am posting what I feel are the off the marks and on the marks.
Let me first say that for the record I like Lands' End. I've always appreciated their classic approach to fashion. But I'll have to admit that I'm fond of Lands' End past more than Land' End present.
Nonetheless, one can still pick up a few good pieces for a good price if you're willing to wade through some stinkers that are passing for true classic clothing.

OFF THE MARK:

V-neck mid weight sweater

At first sight this looks like a very nice sweater. It has great shape and I love the color. The only drawback (and this is a big one for me) is that this sweater is 96% acrylic and 4% nylon. There isn't a thread of cotton to be seen. This is such an unfortunate trend not only with Lands' End but with many of our staple stores. As of lately it seems that many of Land's End products consist of far too many man made materials like acrylic, nylon and spandex, how dreadful.


Short Sleeve Peter Pan Blouse

No explanation is needed for this one. Peter Pan should never be applied to any female past the age of ten.


Relaxed Pima Polo

All polo shirts aren't created equal. This pima polo seems a little boxy and there's just too many buttons on the plackard. I do like the idea of a quality polo without a logo but this isn't it. In terms of that classic polo feel it's better to stick with Ralph Lauren.

ON THE MARK:

The Merriweather Trench coat

I really like this trench. It's fully lined, lightweight and can be worn with or without the belt. I love the fact that it's machine washable and the checkered design is spring ready.

original pattern no iron pin point shirt

I may get some complaints but I see no problem with a no iron shirt. I like the fact that this shirt is 100% cotton and the gingham design is a nice touch.


Chino Bermuda Shorts

I'm crazy about a woman in Chino Bermudas and these fair pretty well.

3/4 sleeve combed cotton roll neck sweater

This sweater is neither on the mark or off the mark. It is sort of straddling the fence. The only thing(s) I don't like about this sweater is the fact that its 3/4 sleeve and is precisely 93% super-combed cotton, 4% nylon and 3% Lycra.

women button front pattern skirt

I like this skirt. It is very spring, fun and whimsical.

classic ballet flats

If you want a really inexpensive flat at just $49.50 these are the ones to get. According to my wife they are pillow soft inside and don't cut into her heels like many others.

Tretorn Tennis

They're Tretorns, enough said!

I'll have to be honest, I'm not particularly blown away by the spring/summer catalog but I am loyal. I just hope that in the end Lands' End and many our other staple stores will be as loyal to us the consumers.

BEST MADRA SHORTS FOR MEN

Last year I did an interview on Connecticut based preps the three chickadees here
I received a pair of their Chesapeake Bay Madras shorts and am deciding to give a small review.

I must say that when I received these back in June 2010 I was pleasantly surprised. These shorts are really holding up pretty well and I've worn them quite a bit. They are 100 percent cotton with two front and two rear pockets and fully lined and cost about $48.00. They're also made in India which is a good thing considering the fabric takes its name from the former English name of the city of Chennai, India.

When I received them they had a stiffness that's expected from a new product. The first thing I do with new clothing is to immediately wash them. This is very good for testing the quality. I haven't noticed any fading as of yet but they have gotten softer. They've also remained true to shape with very minimal shrinkage.

I give these shorts a four out of five ranking. They have become my favorite madras and should get better with age.

SHIRTS AND MONOGRAMS

Right, so we all know that preps love to monogram almost anything.
Though women tend to corner the market on such matters today's post is for the gents, more specifically how to wear monograms on a dress shirt with style.
There are three schools of thought pertaining to monograms on shirts.
1. Don't do it
2. Keep it hidden
3. Show it but be tasteful.
Originally monograms were used in our grandfathers' day during a time when men would never go jacket-less in public. It was never intended to be seen. It was simply an identification whenever a gentleman sent his shirts out for laundering.
Since this practice has now become outdated men now monogram as a personal choice. I tend to fall in school of thought 3. I personally believe it is not necessary to monogram every shirt in your drawer, but having a few on hand at your disposal can add that special little touch.
The first rule of wearing a monogram is to relax. This isn't brain surgery. A monogram is meant to add a bit of your personality to the shirt without calling too much attention to it. But if you're uncomfortable or staring at it as if you've developed a growth, then perhaps a monogram is not your cup of tea.
Next, decide the shirt. Monograms word best on shirts of higher quality so shop around. In my personal opinion monograms on a patterned shirt with different colors is a bit too busy and a monogram will disagree with the fabric. It's best to stick to solid colored shirts or even solid colored shirts with texture to keep your look clean.
Now it's time to select thread color and stitching style. As a rule preppy men stick to simple and basic stitching. Numbers 1, 2, and 8 are the classic way to go. If however you're a man who likes a bit of pizzazz then number 3 would be a great choice. All other styles are good for women.
As far as thread goes keep the gauge small. Any tailor worth their grain in salt will know what thread to use. Remember this is a monogram not a billboard. The length should be within a half inch width and height. Some would say 1/4 inch will suffice.

In terms of thread color the classic way would be a dark blue or black. Note: A very elegant way to go would be tone on tone.

For placement, there are three old school positions to put a monogram on men's dress shirts. The first position is on the shirt pocket or directly on the shirt base fabric where the pocket would have been on pocket-less shirts. The next position is on the hem at the bottom of the shirt front. The third is on the left shirt cuff directly in center lining up with button holes.

How you will have the monogram stitched is a personal matter. There are many businesses that specialize in shirt monograms. Personally, I prefer the hand stitched. I've even sewn a monogram or two on my shirts. (Don't laugh I have skills and it's surprisingly meditative). Note: If you're one who is very fussy about precision, stick to machine embroidery monograms. Hand stitched monograms have imperfections and are meant to be that way. They are the most elegant to me and it's also these imperfections that are prized by Preps.

Lastly, to monogram pays homage to a time gone by. It was a simpler time of our grandads and fathers when men presented themselves as men. To me it is a time honored tradition. Also monograms are great heirlooms to pass down. Instead of your initials try your family name. Think of how proud you'll be when you see your son or daughter raiding your closet for that special shirt that you labeled twenty years ago.

THE TRUTH ABOUT POLITICS

You know I never met a prep who didn't like to debate at least a little about politics. So here is a little food for thought, an anecdote if you will, that can be discussed at your next brunch.

545 vs. 300,000,000 People

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don't propose a federal budget. The President does.

You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.

You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one President, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a President to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker of the House, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The President can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? John Boehner. He is the leader of the majority party. He and fellow House members, not the President, can approve any budget they want. If the President vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is, what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red.

If the Army & Marines are in Iraq and Afghanistan it's because they want them in Iraq and Afghanistan ...

If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power.

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.

Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees...

We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

THE INSIDE OF PREPPY BLOGGERS-MUFFY ALDRICH

Greetings mates, a while back I ran across a site by chance. The title was The Daily Prep and it's creator was and is a gifted writer named Muffy Aldrich.
After perusing her site and reading a few post I was impressed. Her blog was.....well.....good. It was well written and the original photos some from the past of her late father were hauntingly beautiful.
Now, I love preps who can present preppy as it really is, timeless, simple, classical, traditional and above all a strong sense of heritage, and Muffy delivers. The first thing I noticed was this writer definitely has an opinion. From where to eat, or how to compost to the correct length of a cuff on a pair of Khakis. Yet the thing that impresses me the most is that she comments on each reader comment. I mean she addresses every one of them. She has in my opinion mastered what every blogger wants to achieve, the ability to communicate as if you had only one reader.

I also found some rather splendid facts about her site. Muffy Aldrich starting blogging at the beginning of 2010 on defining her take of a Coastal New England aesthetic and lifestyle. A little more than a year old, her blog now gets over 150,000 page views a month, and referred to as a “bible” by some, and is regularly read by many manufactures such as Ralph Lauren, A&F, Lands’ End, and L.L. Bean. Brooks Brothers included “The Daily Prep” on their blog roll for their new blog.

I contacted Muffy and was pleasantly surprised. I've come across many a blogger who weren't willing to share anything. Apparently bloggers can be competitive at times. Muffy was different. I found her very amiable, honest, extremely amusing and willing to share whatever she could with me. So much so that she was gracious enough to grant me an interview on the inside of Muffy Aldrich.

The Preppy Times: Good day Muffy. What annoys you most about the state of what is considered "prep" today?

Muffy Aldrich: What annoys me most is that the clothing items that I consider staples have become harder to find, and increasingly impossible. By what twist of fate or MBA-think can it be this hard to find a decent women's pair of Khakis?) I knwo how I want to spend my money and how I want my family to dress, and hate doing either in a sub-standard way.

This is in part because so many vendors and shoppers have knocked off and co-opted the term. There are all sorts of stores latching on to such oxymoronic and drek concepts and Mall Prep, Resort Prep, even Hipster Prep. (And, OMG, self-labeled redneck Prep! I'm serious!)

TPT: Ha Ha, do tell.

M A: Mall prep is when cheap goods are painted pink and green and slapped on with monograms and iconic images, and everyone coos about how preppy they are.
Resort prep includes financially exclusive, fragile items that are appropriate for sauntering around paved walkways fishing for comments but not much else.
Hipster prep items attempt to blend a classic style with highly trendy fashions, ostensibly trying to attract "younger audiences" but more often than not attracting 45-year old narcissists that want to look like what they think 29-year old narcissists look like.

All three are designed for , and typically by, people more comfortable in cubicles than any more authentic environment. These clothes are for showing off. Perhaps the epitome of these drek Prep off-shoots are L.L. Bean Signature and True Prep, both tragic missed opportunities, subversins of great brands, and raw cash-grabs. I started my blog just before both were launched, perhaps even in apprehension borne of seeing early glimpses at both.

Obviously, people should wear what they want. But I believe this strip mining of the term, followed by their inevitable failures and backlashes, will hurt and even scare off even more vendors serving the classic prep (a phrase that should be redundant, by the way) market.

Rightly or wrongly, good clothes-classic, pleasing, sturdy, and work enabling - for me almost belong in the Maslow's hierarchy of needs. If I don't have them, I obsess on getting them, and when I have them, I can move on to higher goals.

TPT: Is that why you started blogging? And what is missing from the state of Prep?

M A: Yes! Honestly, it was my husband who strongly encouraged me, mostly so I would stop complaining to him about it. (It didn't work)

TPT: I hear ya, my wife convinced me to do the same.

M A: Voices too often missing from the collective world view around Prep are the students', including college students', who deeply care about the environment and spent summers working on organic farms; or the pre-med student' who spend their summers in underdeveloped countries serving the people's medical needs. These are the people for whom Prep clothes should be designed. (Or, said differently, the vendors that appeal to these people will gain a good ten years of healthy market share.)

Another voice missing has been the greatest generation's. These are the people who fought the war and really knew what thrift and functionality meant. They practice stewardship.

I started blogging for a few other reasons. One is that I had recently lost my father, and the blog was an attempt to reflect upon and even pay homage to his influence in my life. It was also an excuse to highlight so many places and clothes that I really like. (Finally, if I can help rehabilitate my life-long nickname of "Muffy" and make it slightly less mocked, so much the better.)

TPT: What was life like for you growing up?

M A: It all revolved around salt water. We lived in an old house on a salt marsh, and were only a short walk to the small Yacht Club where we kept our boat(s) as well as the beaches where we swam. With few excepttions, every day was spent on, or in, the water, or both. Even evenings included walds down tothe water.

I attended small private schools, and horses were also a dominant factor. I rode for many years until just after I got married.

Ornithology played a large role. So many weekends were spent in the field, visiting nesting areas, and viewing slide shows of the natural world from travels across the globe. I would often partake in the annual Christmas Count (where people from across the state all go out on the same day and count how many species they find, which meant getting up at 2am). My life list is quite extensive.

TPT: I'll say, but who is Muffy Aldrich?

M A: What most surprises visiting friends is how many people in the various stores where I shop stop to talk to me. I always have to factor in an extra fifteen minutes or more whenever I go to the supermarket. I get detailed personal updates from so many of the people who work there, from their dates the night before, to their grilling techniques, to their clothing purchases (of course), to how they are recovering from their traffic accidents. All of my errands have that quality, from the lumberyard to the post office, which is just the way I like it. Village living has tremendous sppeal to me.

TPT: Who were your biggest influences that helped shape you?

M A: My parents and my grandmother were steady, supportive and kind. My grandmother taught me through example about gardening, especially perennials, and about old Yankee thrift. (She knew how to get a full and long life from a tea bag or piece of aluminum foil.) My father, now post-mortem a great supporting character on the blog, was incredibly curious. He had a deep appreciation for quality and I loved going into New York and New Haven to all of the great old stores with him. My mother taught me the importance of stewardship, of humans and animals alike, with a strong emphasis on healthful living and eating. (She refuses to be on the blog, and being all alive, I can't make her!) We had a tremendously eclectically interesting assortment of friends, from authors and ornithologists to foundation directors and taxidermists.

TPT: Speaking of stewardship of animals, how many do you own?

M A: Right now we have the fewest number of species than we have had in quite a while-just one Golden Retriever and ten hens. But at any given time we have had combinations of sheep; lop-eared rabbits; cats; more Golden Retrievers; horses; English Setters; and hens.

We also have a few farms that we visit frequently, so we can say hello to a lot of larger animals, and also give them as much business as we can so they will stick around. Finally, we have a lot of wild animals stop by, such as eight wild turkeys this morning.

TPT: What's the one thing you absolutely cannot live without?

M A: My family.

TPT: Where does Muffy Aldrich want to be in five years?

M A: Not too different from where I am now. Living full time on the coast of Maine, continuing working in our family business. I also would like to have done my part in helping the Prep marketplace get to a better place than it is today.

TPT: This is a funny question but in your eyes what makes Maine such a special place?

M A: Everything! I love the very long coast (thank goodness for fractals!). I love both the natural beauty and a culture that does not take it for granted. I also like that you have to be a little tougher in Maine. It keeps the aesthetic from getting to prissy. We have deep reoots in Maine and have spent countless summers there.

TPT: I understand that you and your husband have come out with a book. Can you say a little something about what sparked this collaboration?

M A: The book, Unschooling Rules, is another extension of our core philosophy, just aimed at something actually important rather than clothes! I have heard from a lot of readers that the topic of national education bores, depresses, or confuses them. From early reactions, through, I think anyone who likes the general tone of The Daily Prep and wants to read more will consider Unschooling Rules as a good, easy, but interesting read.

TPT: What would you say is the reason the classic/preppy lifestyle has endured?

M A: It is a bit of an ipso facto argument. That which has endured in our culture I would regard as Preppy. Over time, by definition, classics emerge.

TPT: Finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking of blogging?

M A: Be thick skinned. I have had horrible things said about me and to me. I view my blog as a gathering spot, of which I happen to be the host. Some people contribute quite a few fabulous comments, which I always really appreciate (they put the "Daily" in Daily Prep!). Others contribute comments periodically, which is also great. Most people stay in the background and listen, a position with which I am probably the most personally empathetic, as that would be me! The goal is to debate ideas and item, not the people behind them.

But some people have incredible expectations of me and get upset with me when I deviate from their expectations. Other people just want to come by in order to criticize the gathering. I don't understand either position. If everyone took The Daily Prep for granted, it would not exist for much longer. On the other hand, if you don't like the communiity, no one is forced to come. I periodically feel like reminding certain people that the blog is free and I am not paid!

Be patient. It does take a while to get going. My first few months had almost no traffic, before being noticed by a few other blogs and sites and even search engines such as Bing and Blogger.

Be comfortable. Don't be afraid to put up some bad posts. As with speaking in front of thousands of people, it is easy to get the equivalent of vertigo. Sometimes it is better to put up some clunkers than do nothing.

Be discerning in what you accept and promote. I am offered a lot of free items from various vendors. I turn down the vast majority. Most of what is on my blog I bought myself. Those things that have been given to me by vendors are listed, of course, but more importantly, they are things that I genuinely love, use, and would by for myself in a heartbeat.

By far the best part has been the incredibly kind people who have reached out to me. I cannot tell you how many wonderful emails I have received, and how very guilty I feel that I have yet to respond to all of them. Blogging takes far more time than I had expected but it has also been far more rewarding than I had expected. A good number of readers and other bloggers have turned into friends, both online as well as some that I have met. And people have alert me to interesting products and sites that I would not have found on my own. I have also had many very interesting conversations with a variety of vendors finding our overlap. So all in all, it has been a terrifically successful experience for me.
