Anusara© Yoga is a school of hatha yoga which unifies qualities of the heart with bio-mechanical principles of alignment in the body.

Founded by John Friend in 1997, it is one of the fastest growing schools of yoga. It’s popularity may be a result of the uplifting Shiva-Shakti Tantric philosophy that looks for the good in all people and in all situations. Through this philosophy, we teach a heart quality that is innate in all of us. The Buddhists call this buddha nature. One might say that we teach basic goodness through the unique and powerful Universal Principles of Alignment.

The bio-mechanics that make up the unique Universal Principle of Alignment make the practice a therapeutic and powerful system of hatha yoga.

It is a practice that emphasizes community and in serving each other to add more kindness to oneself and into the world. Of most importance, Anusara© yoga classes are designed to bring awareness to the pulsation that resides in all of us, to celebrate, beauty, truth & freedom in us all.

The postures of flying yoga are not actually about levitating by using a magical mantra. In flying yoga people work in pairs or in groups of three or more. With one yoga as a base on the floor, the second yogi is "flown" or lifted by the base.

A spotter is used to safely support the base and the flyer. The flier is supported through a series of "suspended in mid-air" yoga moves. For the yogi flying, the spine is released from a lot of the gravitational pull and the core abdominal muscles are stimulated to contract for balance. This combination of core muscles awakening, traction and unloading of the spine allows for a free experience of yoga poses that can let you feel like you are flying or even floating! So if you are interested in fun, therapeutics and excellent core conditioning come try it out!

Fly with Leanne ~ Thursdays 7:00 pm. Open to new students of flying yoga. Some yoga experience is recommended.

1+1=3 ~ By Dr. Brent MacNeil

1+1=3? Sometimes. Synergy occurs when a relationship results in more than the sum of involved parts. Chiropractic and yoga have a synergistic relationship. Every day I see the benefits of yogis and yoginis having chiropractic care. I also see the long term benefit of chiropractic patients beginning a yoga practice. Our bodies react to imbalance in various ways: muscle tightening, inflammation, weakness, pain, stress, etc. and our minds react in corresponding ways (catastrophizing, anxiety, withdrawal, fatigue, etc.). Imbalances tend to lead to symptoms over time. Chiropractic can help bring your yoga practice to the next level.

What I often notice is that many yoga practitioners will have some joints which are extra (hyper) flexible, but there may be other joints which are hypo (less) mobile. Common areas for hypomobility are the lowest vertebrae in the low back, between the shoulder blades and the base of the neck. These imbalances are often perpetuated because restricted joints tend to remain restricted as the (hyper) mobile joints serve the purpose of allowing movement. This imbalance and irritation amounts to unnecessary stress that can challenge our nervous system, comfort levels and health.

I am quick to recommend yoga to virtually all of my patients. With the right instruction and motivation, chiropractic patients tell me that they are able to have their adjustments last longer with the active engagement of yoga. By keeping mobile what should be moving, there is less daily stress on the nervous system and health and well-being can improve. There is a sense of self efficacy when we realize that the power to succeed is found internally; we just have to tap into it.

Both chiropractic care and yoga help to undo the stressors that life imposes upon us. We need both passive and active aspects of care. Sometimes we need some help (i.e. chiropractic adjustment) to prevent little problems from growing; we can also do daily self-work to build upon what we have accomplished.

Small hinges can open big doors.

Dr. MacNeil practices Chiropractic at our Therapeutic Approach Health Centre.

Wow, I had a great week with David Swenson. Having taken this 50 hour training before I was thinking that this "second time around" course in August was more for me than for my students. I was wrong. I reviewed and learned lots of great assists and found a daily challenging practice again. Thanks to my partners Carmen Holm and Guylaine Williams who always keep me on my toes and help me to take my personal practice to the next level. It is exhilarating~to be a part of healthy, active inspiring class of yoga. I feel great after my practice and want to share more of it with everyone.

Since this week-long Ashtanga course I have been taking Jolene d'Entremont's classes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 11:00am at TAYS. Jolene is an exceptional teacher. Inspiring and giving just the right amount of challenge but still letting us fly. I am inspired to teach and share and be on this yoga journey. Why don't you join me? :)

Back to School News...

Dear Yogis and Yoginis,

I went to Jolene's 11:00 class today and it was great! The 11:00 class is a new time on the schedule. One hour of power yoga mid morning is just what the doctor ordered after the first morning organizing the kids and maneuvering traffic to get them there on time. They kept saying they didn't want to be late because they would miss seeing their friends.I could feel all this pressure!

So, as I was driving I could feel the stress building. Meditation my calm you down, but it also helps you notice when anxiety is building. I used my yoga breathing and tried not to get carried away by the thoughts of being late. Things worked out fine and everyone was there on the school ground having a grand time.

Still, I could feel a hangover of the tension from getting everything and everyone together on time. Jolene's yoga class at 11:00 was a real blessing. We even got to do cow's head pose. By the end of class I was relieved, relaxed, stretched and strengthened. Thanks Jo!
