moving....

2012-08-25T13:56:00.000-04:00

I have been totally MIA from this blog...I have toyed with different formats, different colors, new backgrounds all sorts of stuff to try and revive my blogging passion... here's the bottom line- I'm kinda blah with this blog.
I started this blog when I was in a rut, it gave me something to get excited about and pour my passion into. It was exactly what I needed at that point. But fast forward a few years and I have loads of great stuff going on in my life and less and less time (time vampires include: my adorable nephew, my fabulous family, my wonderful boyfriend, my creative brain going into overdrive with new ideas...) So, in taking a cue from my personal life- I'm moving the blog! Therapy By Charlotte will now live on a format that works better for me (and my snazzy new iphone!) Here's hoping this move will help revive my passion that I had when I started this journey!

Thanks for all the views and support!
xoxo-Charlotte

P.S. all the old posts will remain here and who knows...I might get inspired to use this space from time to time!

have you read it yet???

50 shades...the tawdry trilogy of innocent Ana and tortured soul Christian Grey. Our generation's very own Story of O...love it or hate it this book is on fire. Topping the New York times best seller list, selling out at Barnes and Noble as well as E.L. James making the rounds on the news (20/20 this Friday), you have to have been under a rock to have never heard of this.

But really the best part is the title- how timely...do you think E.L James is at all away of how hot grey is in the world of interiors right now? And since there are so very very many shades of grey, there is one for every style and room!

So taking a que from the book, why not start in the bedroom:

mixing patterns and textures all within the grey family work beautifully in this Jonathan Adler bedroom

This striped headboard adds various shades of grey as well as adding some height and interest

Dwell Studio knows grey and this peacock duvet is on my wish list!

But Ana and Christian don't keep the "shades of grey" in the bedroom and neither should you:

Just like Christian, this grey room comes alive with a feminine touch of pink

Grey can be soft and relaxed...

or edgy and modern. Bold colors pop off of grey walls

Grey cabinets are appearing everywhere these days

Need some wall guidance?

Benjamin Moore has loads of options!

ever flawless Farrow & Ball has a refined palette of perfect picks

And if you are too timid to go grey on the walls... there are accessories galore!

and if you need a comfy chair to curl up in and read...

Aiden Gray makes a wonderful addition to any home

2012-04-06T11:35:00.000-04:00

If you are at all like me, your sinuses are begging for some April showers to wash away the pollen. While most people are beginning to focus on the exterior of their homes, why not buck the trend and over haul the bathroom for some stunning April showers of your own???

Need a little inspiration? go look at your shower...I'll wait....now see what else is out there:

Waterworks' Amelie Thermostatic Control Valve Trim with Cross Handles would look stunning in any bathroom

Industrial chic your style? You can't miss with the Henry a gorgeous nod to traditional with classic styling and unlaquered brass

Want sleeker? try the Boulevard Thermostatic with Shutoff Trim

Nothing is more luxurious than the rain shower! This gorgeous Etoile Ceiling mount is quite the statement with its subtle curves and details

Don't want to rip out your current plumbing? Try the Henry Gooseneck for the same effect

And don't forget the impact of some new tile:

Ann Sacks' Jasper is so soothing- I could let all my troubles float away in a bathroom featuring this!

Marilyn is a stunning combination of quartz, agate, amber and tiger's eye

Hex Circle adds a modern pop with tanzanite and chrysoberyl in soothing Mediterranean colors

April Showers brings May flowers with Blossom in a calming mix of blues and greens

hopping down the bunny trail....

2012-04-05T18:03:00.000-04:00

Yay hooray, today is my Friday! So ready for a weekend of forced family fun and Easter goodness.

Going to be a house guest this weekend? take some festive spring colored macarons to your host
guaranteed to be a hit!

Set your table with a nod to the fluffy bunny by using carrots and lettuce leaves in your floral arrangements

Why skimp on the current trends? Color-blocking is all the rage in fashion but it works for eggs too!

A very sophisticated take on Easter cupcakes! i love the spun sugar nests...however I opted to order Georgetown Cupcakes' Easter cupcakes because I'm lazy

Easter doesn't have to be all pastels...Go bold- be patient and let those eggs sit in the dye to get a bright bold coloring

Abstract eggs...a step up from the old white crayon trick- use rubber cement to achieve this cool effect

Got some fabric scraps? use them to cover cans to make a festive tablescape!

Here's hopping the fluffy bunny finds your basket!

I'm no April fool...

2012-04-01T20:25:00.001-04:00

~~Well actually I am, my sister got me pretty good with some foolishness about her husband being arrested.~~ But nope, this isn't an April fools prank, I'm actually getting back to writing...

Follow Boden's advice and add a pop of red

Heat things up in the kitchen with a Cayenne stove

Use Cayenne for pops of color in the bedroom

Don't be afraid to dress up with some fiery lipstick

Or add a fun pop of color to your living room with Society Social's The Hostess bar cart

So here's hoping that April showers bring a flood of ideas!

Dance your troubles away...

The color of the year for 2011 was Honeysuckle, a lovely pink shade that lead me to deem 2011 the Year of Me! Pantone described Honeysuckle as a color that " encouraged us to face everyday troubles with verve and vigor." Well it really worked out well for me and 2011 has brought many changes in my life, so I was a bit sad that Honeysuckle was on its was out.

Lately I have been feeling a bit torn, especially about this blog- I love it, it has been my constant creative outlet for awhile now, but these days I feel like I have a few too many balls in the air and not enough time or brain power to formulate a post that I felt good about. Then this morning I logged on to see the announcement of the 2012 color of the year and I instantly knew what to do!

2012 is the year of Tangerine Tango (Pantone 17-1463)

"Tangerine Tango , a spirited reddish orange, continues to provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward"

It's not an entire surprise or that far out of left field as Tangerine Tango was named one of the top colors in the Spring Fashion trend report

But regardless, it is good pick! Orange has been gaining ground in all fields of fashion from cosmetics to home decor and every little bit in-between The executive director of Pantone says it best when she describes it:" Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and the adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy."

So 2012, here we come! and channeling the spirit of Tangerine Tango I am going to recharge and move forward...over the next few weeks I plan to change up the format of this blog, so that Therapy by Charlotte can continue to be a source of inspiration and a creative outlet that works for me and my schedule.

No pressure Tangerine Tango, but 2011 was pretty awesome- you have some big pink shoes to fill, but I feel good and think we may be able to work together and make 2012 the Year of Me part deux!

To all of you who read my post and overlook my misspellings and poor grammar I say a huge Thank you! I'm not going anywhere, just having a makeover- I hope you will still check in and see what is inspiring me

Stay tuned

xoxo

Maturity is that time...

2011-11-17T10:25:00.001-05:00

"Maturity is that time when the mirrors in our minds
turn to windows and instead of seeing the reflection of ourselves we see others."
-Unknown

I have long been a fan of Burberry; my very first pair of "big girl" sunglasses were Burberry, my very favorite purse is my Burberry, my wellies are Burberry, I dream of one day owning the Neiman Marcus Burberry edition British taxi cab... you can see where I am going. To me there is nothing more iconic and British chic than Burberry- from their perfumes to their plaid. But this year they have left me scratching my head a bit with their Burberry Prosum rain cape.

Made of polyurethane and trimmed in patent leather, it is a chic way to not hide your outfit in the rain. It's cute, but at almost $1,300 I can't wrap my head around it...polyurethane! I thought perhaps they had invented some new genius material to use to justify the cost...nope! But none the less they can do no wrong in my eyes, I still kind of love it!

It's like a window to your outfit! and like all windows- you want to make sure it is accompanied by proper dressing!

Drapes mounted as high as possible help draw the eye up and make a room feel taller

Layering textures isn't just for your bed and sofa; natural fiber blinds paired with fabric drapes makes a stunning statement

Got a big window and can't decide on one fabric? mix things up and create a statement with a collection of curtains

Curtains can add a pop of color and trimmings on them can help set the tone of the room, like these preppy chic curtains

Even a sheer helps the ambiance of the room, it doesn't inhibit the light coming in but it softens it and gives you some privacy

Window treatments are essential in room where you are eating, can you imagine trying to have brunch with a blinding sun in your eyes.

When I got into the design world I ignored window treatment for the first few years but then I embraced them and I love them, they make a room and can add so much from drama to safety to ambiance- you need window treatments. But what I encounter most is the age old question of how long they should be.

Rule #1 don't do short drapes

Now don't get me wrong- this is an adorable nursery, I am assuming there is some fear of strangulation as to why they are cropped, instead of shorty drapes opt for a roman shade.

Consider fashion for a moment... if you are old enough to be furnishing a home, you are too old for cropped shirts, so no midriff and no shorty drapes.

Rule #2 as long as they are the appropriate length there are no hard and fast rules, only preference

Floor Length drapes are classic, they brush the floor. They give a clean and tailored feel and are easy to clean around. However, if you have an old home that is charming enough to have uneven floors- this is not for you, you will never be able to get them all even with the floor so save yourself the agony of hemming till your fingers fall off and go longer.

Trouser Length drapes are "breaking the floor" they just rest on the floor. It is a soft and relaxed look that is extremely forgiving of any imperfections in your floor. Some people worry that by sitting on the floor (we are talking and inch or 2 of fabric) they will get dirty easily- harsh truth time, if that is your concern then perhaps you should get better acquainted with your swiffer sweeper... As long as you keep a clean home you shouldn't worry about the drapes.

Puddle Length drapes are over the top romantic, they scream luxe! It's not for everyone because it is more formal but done correctly it can be quite beautiful. So there is a bit more reason for concern on puddled drapes with concern to cleaning, namely because you can easily suck them up in the vacuum if you aren't careful (I can't tell you how many times I have had to repair drapes for clients because of this) but also if you have lovely molding at the floor level then you better make sure they are clean. the puddle will draw attention to baseboards (my favorite place to skimp on cleaning) and as long as they are in good shape this is a plus. Puddled drapes also need consideration on the fabric selection- make sure your choose a fabric that will puddle nicely like a silk, it it is too stiff a fabric it will just look funny.

Hello?? Time, where did you go?

2011-11-16T10:46:00.001-05:00

I have no clue where the time has gone that my last post was about Halloween!!!

just a guess??? actually wonder if they make one for pintrest...

But in honor of all the twi-hearts out there that are fired up for Breaking Dawn part 1 I draw my inspiration form this charming image I found on pintrest

hehehe- I love this!

Glitter Wallpaper...might be a smidge over the top but I'm sure there is a perfect place for it somewhere..

mod-sparkles with a faceted faucet

subtle champagne sparkles for every part of you life

possible eye make-up for the Breaking Dawn premier??? very ode to Edward!

Yes- I'm team Edward and proud of it!

Glass and Acrylic add sparkles without being girlie

Chrome table legs shine and shimmer on a lacquered floor

mirrors bounce around light and against darker shades add a ton of sparkle

Can you tell I love this table?

Sparkle up you Turkey day with glittered pumpkins... very Martha!

toss in a throw pillow... just tell him it is a holiday decoration but never pack it back up!

Swarovski sets the bar on sparkles!!! love the contrast of the sleek modern shapes of their pendants and the drama of the crystals!

Halloween's just an excuse for girls to dress like sluts...

2011-10-27T09:49:00.000-04:00

So when I first heard that we had to dress up for a Halloween party this weekend I had fears of getting suckered into wearing something along the lines of a bunny costume...my bunny days are long gone! I didn't totally blow off my mom's suggestion of Marilyn Monroe but then which of her many men would the boyfriend be???

So after hours of scouring the internet for creative ideas and a visit to the Halloween store I presented him with a list of costumes I would be willing to wear. I tried to be creative including thing like going as Chrome and FireFox (for the record I thought this is what he would have chosen and was getting excited about buying silver leggings) or a bee and beekeeper(ala Martha Stewart), I was also secretly hopping we could do PeeWee and Dottie. But like any true Barbie fan I threw in Barbie and Ken because I am still obsessed with Barbie and because there is a hysterical Ken costume out this year. And what do you know... I have the best boyfriend ever because he has agreed to wear plastic hair and go as Ken! Now to convince my dear sweet sissy that she will never again wear that hot pink bridesmaid dress hanging in her closet- because really Barbie looks much better in her signature color of Pink! in fact who or what space doesn't look better with a pop of pink???

Boring facades are awoken with hot pink shutters

The other Queen of Pink! Betsy Johnson is a woman by my own heart!

Pops of pink work in every style and add a touch whimsy and romance at the same time

Kelly Wearstler is fearless when it comes to pink!

Aghh, Pink!!!! Everything is better in Pink!

See Sissy- Barbie really needs a pink dress, not black!

I have no fear of rocking the pink but here's hoping I can pull off being blonde for a night!

I've waited till the last possible moment...

2011-10-24T09:05:00.000-04:00

It's that time of year again, and I've waited till the last possible moment to decide on a Halloween costume and what to do with my pumpkin.. I still haven't had inspiration strike on the costume but I have found plenty of inspiring pumpkins this year!

Demure painted Colonial pumpkins will flow beautifully into Thanksgiving

I think these little guys are adorable!

Owls will also hang around perfectly for Fall not just Halloween!

Cutesy pumpkin totem with no carving needed is perfect for squirrel infested areas

The modern pumpkin

Beiber Fever- still going strong! actually this one really creeps me out!

Pumpkin turned Oasis for floral pumpkins- Love!

Maybe the mice would deter the squirrels...

Preppy pumpkins!

I love the simplicity of these although I doubt I could carve that mouth so tiny!

Lilly Pumpkins!!

Angry Birds! this one's for you Dad!!

glittery ghost pumpkin- how very chic!

Glitter pumpkins- I would do this in a heart beat!

not the best picture but they are different shades of pink!

Perfect for Fall tables!

pumpkins turned toad stools! all they need is a garden gnome!

Break out your modge podge!

I did this look last year and I still love it, very simple and elegant

whatever you decide- have fun with it! Happy carving, or painting, or bedazzeling or what ever you decide!

Now for the costume....

The more that you read...

2011-10-04T09:47:00.001-04:00

I love Dr. Seuss... always have. I used a Dr. Seuss quote for my high school senior yearbook quote; I use Dr. Seuss books for inspiration for nurseries and children's rooms; I even painted my nephew's high chair with Green Eggs and Ham.
But as I've gotten older and a little wiser, I've traded out my favorite Cat In the Hat quote for this one:

"The more you read, the more things you will know.
The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."
-Dr Seuss from I Can Read With My Eyes Shut

If you've read my blog before, you know how much I love books, for both reading and decorating!

So needless to say I laughed out loud when I saw this picture floating around Facebook (allegedly from Random House) talking about book suicide as a result of the Jersey Shore. I'm pretty sure books started committing suicide when Snookie got published but that is neither here nor there.

Back to my love of books (I mostly just wanted to put that picture on here!) I have long said how much a bookshelf can add to a room, it adds texture, depth, color and a conversation piece all in one

But why let the spines have all the fun?

For those of you out there (like me!) who pick books based on covers- why not show them off! I love this nursery and the way simple picture ledge became a book shelf, allowing the covers to shine as the focal point of the room. Or you can take this idea and frame it- thanks to my newest love...

Penguin Books, who has always prided themselves on having good looking covers, has released a collection of 100 covers in the form of postcards. So why not frame a few of your favorites and make a collage out of them!

And while we are on the subject... if you find your shelves are empty these days and needing some inspiration- I have just the shopping list for you!

Daily Candy (one of my long time favorites) has compiled a list of 101 books to keep you busy. Now, as a girl who has a tendency to read books with pink covers, I have to say- this is the best list of must read books I have seen. It is a brilliant mix of authors from new cult favorites like Steig Larson and Jonathan Franzen to old classics like Margaret Mitchell and Charles Dickens. Of course I love it because it includes my favorite book of all time- Valley of the Dolls! And to make it even better, they present the list with images of the covers!!! So even us cover judges can know what we are getting into! So time to start checking off my list and loading up the kindle with some new finds!

Here's what I've checked off the list so far:

The Harry Potter Series

the Great Gatsby

The Sookie Stackhouse Series

The Devil in the White City

The Help

The Catcher in the Rye

To Kill a Mockingbird

The Little House on the Prairie Series

The Corrections

The Art of Racing in the Rain

Little Women

Valley of the Dolls

The Millennium Trio

Only 82 to go...

Happy Reading!

A house is not a home...

2011-10-02T11:15:00.002-04:00

" A house is not a home unless it contains food and fire for the mind as well as the body."
-Benjamin Franklin

It is that glorious time of year when the nights get cold enough to start a fire in the fireplace and the television networks are finally airing new episodes; some call it the beginning of hibernation others call it the beginning of relationship season.

As couples snuggle into the warmth of living rooms, it kindles the age old question of furniture arrangement...where to put the television? Do you make the fireplace the central focus? Do you make the television the focal point? Or do you go with the logical compromise and put the television above the fireplace?

Putting the television above the fireplace is the natural compromise and a great way to maximize the furniture arrangement. The only down side is when the television is off, you are stuck staring a big black rectangle...or are you?

The barn door style cabinet above the fireplace conceals the television and plays off the rustic charm of the old beams and stone facade of the fireplace

This charming whitewashed wrap around cabinet conceals the television without compromising the mantle

Classic built-ins are a great way to hide a television.

If you don't have a functioning fireplace why not use it to house the television? After-all you can always play one of those videos that look like fire logs

This custom wooden case hanging above the mantel matches the beams and ties in the wood tones that are throughout the room

This custom cabinet that mirrors the arch of the fireplace is the perfect place to stash the television

I adore the chevron pattern of this cabinet! and the cerused finish matches the mantel and some of the furnishings, making it feel like it has been there forever.

If you can't hide it why not embellish it? Wood moldings or old frames painted to match the wall add an interesting touch without competing with the fireplace itself

But why settle for the black rectangle or having to look at closed doors? Seura has created the best solution piece yet!

You may have seen their swanky vanishing televisions embedded in the bathroom mirrors of some of the chicest hotels around like Chicago's Elysian Hotel.

They have taken their unique technology and brought it into the living room with their new Premier Series- a larger, elegantly framed mirror with full size vanishing television embedded in the glass. So now you can have the elegance of a mirror over your mantle to bounce the light around as well as having your television centered right over the focal point of the room! Total Design Genius! and to make it even better...it's made right here in the USA!

and with over 50 styles of frames available, there is something for every style

Now that that little problem is solved, where to put all the components?

While this is possibly the best solution I have seen, there is no way this would ever pass fire code! All those pesky components need to vent, not to mention the added heat of the fireplace would render them useless.

While built-ins offer a great place to stash the components you either have all those wires exposed or have to leave the doors open for the remote signal to reach. But fabric conceals while still allowing the signals to work.

Fabric covered tables offer a place to put your drink as well as a clever hiding spot for all those pesky cable boxes and such.

Fabric panels installed in cabinet doors allow you to keep doors closed without exposing the tangle of wires that comes with all those components. Plus it adds a pop of color and pattern!

So snuggle up and enjoy the compromise this hibernation season!

There are as many pillows of illusion...

2011-09-27T10:18:00.000-04:00

" There are as many pillows of illusion as flakes in a snow storm. We wake from one dream into another dream."

Ralph Waldo Emerson

All these gray days keeping us inside and making us want to crawl back in bed have me yearning for some pillow talk...
No fail, every time the seasons change I get the itch to redecorate. The landscape outside my windows change so why shouldn't my interior shift a little to work with it? What better way than to toss in some updated throw pillows. Some may call it excessive, but I really do believe throw pillows are a seasonal item and should be mixed up regularly to keep a room fresh.

Some things to consider when creating your pillow-scape:
-Don't be afraid to mix patterns, colors or textures, just keep them "related"- it adds depth and interest to your room.
-Use odd numbers- odds are always more pleasing to the eye when it comes to design.
-Don't be afraid to try a different shape or size. Over-sized pillows give a more casual vibe while rectangles tend to feel sleeker and more modern.

The greatest and the least...

2011-09-23T11:12:00.000-04:00

"The greatest and the least,
The rich and the poor,
The weak and the strong,
In sickness and in health,
In joy and in sorrow,
In tragedy and triumph,
You are ALL MY CHILDREN"

Today's a sad day, it marks the end of an era. The very last episode of All My Children will be airing in just a few hours. It all started on January 5th 1970 when the world got their first glimpse into the fictitious Pennsylvania town of Pine Valley. This gorgeous little town that is somehow convenient to NYC, the Bahamas, Hawaii, LA and has both a beach with yacht club and also dense forests with random fallout shelters in the forest floor, yet it appears to only have a hand full of residents that have a penchant for marriage, drama and questionable medical practices. There just aren't enough words or sequins to explain this twisted group of people who I love.

So in honor of my exile from Pine Valley, today we talk pine...

Pine trees are native to the majority of the northern hemisphere. From ornamental uses such as the Christmas Tree to practical uses like construction, the pine is the most commercially important species of tree.
There is a word that you come across quite frequently when shopping for pine (especially in a flooring capacity). Heartpine- it is just that, the wood from the heart of the tree. Because trees are harvested at a younger age now, they no longer grow long enough to form the darker decay resistant heartwood, thus creating a wonderful reclaimed second life for this product that is called antique heartpine. Heartpine is also used to refer to the heart wood of southern yellow pine.

reclaimed wide plank pine flooring is rich in character

Eastern White Pine has been the flooring choice for hundreds of years for New Englanders

Pine flooring often has color variation, grain and knots that give it tons of character and can make a big impact.

But if pine flooring isn't your thing- you can still give your own Pine Valley tribute on the walls- Pine needles have so many gorgeous shades of green in them so there is something for everyone!

"green-wash" pays homage to forest it comes from with the color of young needles and the beauty of the grain showing through.

The dark pine green of mature needles gives this tile a reptilian feel

So Pine Valley- you will be missed!

Guess I'll just have keep the story alive with my very own Erica Kane...

after all she hasn't married Ken yet...

It has no beginning and no end...

2011-09-21T10:24:00.000-04:00

It's hard to wrap my head around the fact that now is the time to start thinking about spring gardening but it is...at least for some of spring's most stunning flowers. Fall means bulb planting season! I'll fully admit I am a huge sucker for tulips and seeing the daffodils push through is the true indicator of spring for me, but this year why not consider something a little different?

Since I'm presently a bit obsessed with round home accessories why not play with that idea inside and outside the home???

Allium is a bold statement for a garden; it has a modern, almost graphic quality to it. These giants are not just one big flower but in fact a ball (about the size of a softball)of tiny blossoms that bloom from spring to summer. And not only are they dramatic, they are deer resistant (bonus for those of us in deer territory)!

Don't have a garden...never fear- consider getting the same look inside with one of Crystorama's stunning round chandeliers

The Cypress is an amazingly close match with it's blossoms! And the "wet white" finish gives it more of a modern feel and helps the light bounce around and create some stunning shadows on the ceiling.

The Palla collection from jewelry designer Dorian Webb was an instant favorite from the moment it was released- trust me these pictures do not do it justice- they are stunning pieces.

and now Palla comes in a simpler color scheme! loving the silver, white and crystal- a little easier to work with than the original amber version but just as gorgeous in real life.

Round light fixtures give a dramatic contrast to all the straight lines and 90 degree angles inside a home

and they come in every price range!

From crystal spheres to paper lanterns- anyone can get this look!

Open spheres have the same drama with less visual weight

no electrical...no problem

Tissue paper flower spheres add the drama and a pop of color to a child's room

Nothing beats a classic! Disco balls dance the fine line of unexpected and cheesy- if you want to add one to your home go for the unexpected- put one where you would least expect it and let it be a conversation piece.

The allium also comes in a quirky version... The Shubertii

The cousin to the classic round, it keeps a looser shape and is more volleyball sized!

it's random drama is another great trend from nature to steal and bring inside

So roll up your sleeves and dig in the dirt...or if you can't wait for spring go ahead and hang it overhead!

When one door closes...

2011-09-19T07:00:00.000-04:00

"When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us." -Alexander Graham Bell

Over the last two weeks I have cruised up and down the GW Parkway more than a few times and every time I hit the south side of Old Town Alexandria this adorable dance studio caught my eye... Adorable name, adorable clients but really what could be more chic than pink front doors?
I love a painted front door, and I am loving that people are branching out from the standards of black and red...

the transom window says it all! Loving the bubble gum pink!

Mediterranean blue sets the tone for a soothing home

Pale pink speaks to the southern elegance of this old charmer

I don't know if I like the color or the patina better on this pair of old doors

The yellow doors add to the sunny feel of this airy entry way

Apple green makes these old door pop and highlight the architecture of the building

Cap off a Barbie Pink door with the perfect finishing touch of a crystal door knob!

And if committing to the whole door is just too much for you, consider Martha Stewart's trick

paint the edge of the door in a pop of color to compliment your home's color scheme. This is a great way to add a bright bold color that you might not use otherwise.

I'll be lounging on my couch...

2011-09-18T16:58:00.000-04:00

"I'll be lounging on my couch just chillin' in my snuggie..." Bruno Mars

Seems like once the calendar flipped past Labor Day, and the Mid-Atlantic got the thousand year rain storm, fall has blown in and in full force. The days have been crisp and the nights have been chilly.

One of the best things about the Mid-Atlantic is the seasons. Just as summer reaches an unbearable point, fall blows in... It's the time of year where you pull on ballet flats instead of flip flops to run up to Starbucks and get a Pumpkin Spice Latte instead of an Iced Mocha. You spend weekends breaking in a new pair of jeans. It's the perfect season for Burberry plaid and gingham checks.

It's the time of year where it's not quite cold enough to turn the heat on so you fight over covers and snuggle up close to stay warm. And it is the perfect time of year to update you bedroom or living room with a throw blanket.

Throws are a great opportunity to pop in some color to a neutral room or update an established color scheme with a fresh twist.

Throw blankets fall into two categories: the Decorative Throw and the Workhorse Throw

The Decorative is just that, it is decorative and designed to give add a pop of color and texture. Decorative throws are typically smaller in size and are the perfect size for kids to snuggle up in or to keep you lap warm. The Workhorse is a larger size and serves a more practical purpose. This I Believe...

2011-09-14T11:04:00.000-04:00

If you read my blog regularly (that is when I write it regularly) you might recall a post from earlier in the summer that referenced a certain charming young man that gave me a book to read...a real legit, with pages book. Despite what my mother thinks, he is not the reason I haven't written much this summer, I've been busy cooking up some new ideas and inspirations ; but actually my mom might be a little right ( I find myself admitting and saying those words a lot more now that i'm in my 30's)... he has reminded me of the amazing power of good music and good books and I've been doing quite a bit of summer reading.

After finishing a tear jerker by Ian McEwan I was needing something a bit more uplifting, something happier... so he handed me "This I Believe". You may or may not have heard of this before, it was a segment in the 1950's on NPR with Edward R. Murrow. Today it is a book of essays, some taken straight from the 50's radio program others written by notable figures of today and still some written by average American citizens. They are written about all sorts of things, my particular favorites so far are " A Grown-up Barbie" and "Be Cool to the Pizza Dude"...I digress, while reading these essays, these brief snipits of a person's philosophy, it has got me thinking about what I believe in... brevity has never been my strength so writing a 350-500 word essay will be hard and sorry to say but I think my actual "This I Believe" will be a little more private than the world wide web but for now I an truly inspired by Temple Grandin and her essay, "Seeing in Beautiful, Precise Pictures" and thought that would be the perfect way to share some of my beliefs with you.
In absolutely no particular order, This I Believe:

I believe every house should have an animal print somewhere... small or large, just somewhere

I believe in America, living in DC has renewed that pride in me, especially after a gorgeous 9-11 anniversary and seeing how we can come together differences and politics aside.

I believe art is subjective and that you should surround yourself with it, from children's doodles to masterpieces.

I believe in books- I love them! and yes- they are one of my favorite accessories but reading them is even better!

I believe in butts- yes I do! and not just because i have one...I think it is important in this crazy celebrity obsessed world we live in that girls have healthy role models.

I believe in having cake...and eating it! For a long time I thought it was impossible to have your cake and eat it too, but recently I have found that if you stay true to yourself, adjust your perspective a bit and surround yourself with the right people you can have it all- it's all in what's important to you.

I believe in chivalry, despite posting on twitter a dozen or so instances of how it is dead- it's not. trust me ladies, they are still out there- so hold out for a gentleman, it's worth it.

I believe in classics

Classic furniture and fashion is just that and will never fade- it always has a place!

I believe in coffee- and I believe there is nothing wrong with drinking drinks that have stupid superfluous names (cocktails included)

I believe in comfort food, there are foods and smells that can take you right back to a memory or shift your mood so that you instantly perk up- might I recommend cheese and/or bacon if you do't believe me...

I believe there are few things cuter than puppies and babies and nothing better than a snuggle from either of them.

I believe you are never too old to play dress up and I believe you should do any and everything within your power to make your child feel special- even if it means dressing up and riding the subway in costume.

I believe old people have every right to be as eccentric as they like...this one might come back to bite me with my parents...

I believe fashion is art- don't believe me then go pick up a WWD or walk the streets of Paris during fashion week.

I believe in film and taking pictures. and while i recently made the jump and got a digital version of my "big girl camera" I still love film and the mystery of wondering exactly how the picture will turn out...and having to wait to find out!

I believe nothing last forever so it is important to enjoy and be present in the moment

I believe heroes come in many shapes and forms and that they are all around us...

I believe you are never too old to swing on a swing set.

I believe the kitchen is the heart of the home

I believe in love letters. In this day of emails and text, there are few things as romantic to me as seeing the words "I love you" hand written in ink.

I believe in mixing styles, after all, if opposites attract, you better find a way to blend those furnishing together!

I believe Mother Nature creates the best color palettes hands down- she is stunning!

I believe in pops of color, they help you from becoming too serious...

I believe in porches, maybe it is growing up in the south but I am a sucker for a porch (front or back I don't care)

I believe in quotes, I have quote books and journals full of them and scraps of paper with them on it.

I often find myself unable to come up with the right words, so I often turn to the words of others for inspiration and guidance.

I believe in reusing- I love giving something a second life and letting the past into today.

I believe in romance and love and all that drippy sappy stuff

I believe if the shoe fits then buy it in every color!

I believe in being silly- you are never too old to be silly

I believe in wallpaper- there is a time and a place in every home for it- sometimes it isn't where you expect.

But mostly what I believe, (and is what my real essay is about) is the most fitting for today

I Believe in Family. So today, my big brother's birthday (he's old- but not that old! that's his daughter in the picture) I share the words we heard (what seemed like every night) at the dinner table: "At the end of the day it's family." No matter where you are in the world, what the state of the world is or how hard things may be, at the end of the day, you have your family and that is something worth being thankful for. It is easy to loose sight of it from time to time but no matter how big or small, "normal" or eccentric yours may be- they are yours!

and that is what I Believe.

Happy Birthday Billy

and

Thank You Dave

xoxo

Back to reality...

2011-09-12T08:51:00.000-04:00

Time to check back in with the real world...not quite sure where summer went, but it was a ~~good~~ great one! I can't quite get used to seeing the school bus barrel down my street twice a day or the silence that now resonates through the neighborhood during the middle of the day. But alas, it is time to get back to it... back to school (well not for me- can't imagine anything worse!) back to work and back to getting inspired (and sharing with you).
First step in getting back in the groove is cleaning off my desk...a super scary pile of magazines is towering over my laptop threatening to topple over if I look at it hard enough and remnants of fabric are keeping the actual surface of my desk warm and cozy. So as I clean up and make room for my new sewing machine (very good motivator!) I thought I'd share some of my favorite desk tips.

don't be afraid to use bold color in your work space- go with makes you happy and inspired

make sure you have plenty of room- especially if you are like me and like to spread out!

use what you have- make space where you can- using a spare closet is great because you can shut the doors and hide it! Plus- channel your inner Julia Child and use peg board to get organized

make sure you have a comfy chair...if not add a pillow!

Use art and flowers to make the space yours...and pretty! There is something to be said for having something living on your desk (moldy coffee cups don't count as living)

Light!!! natural light is always best so pick a spot that gets good natural light, and if you can't get that then do invest in good lighting

find creative ways to get organized...ever dream of sweeping everything off your desk?

tame your gadgets- hmmm. maybe I should take my own advice! with all the electronics that we have ruling our lives these days it is always challenging to find a chic way to control the cords- I love this ribbon box re-purposed as a charging station - now I finally have an excuse to buy a ribbon box!

Seeing Red....

2011-08-12T09:27:00.000-04:00

There is no doubt that famed show designer, Christian Louboutin is seeing red this week after a New York judge rejected his request to enjoin YSL from selling red soled shoes. The judge went on to to say that fashion designers cannot trademark a single color especially in this case where Louboutin's trademark does not specify the shade he uses (today it's actually Pantone 18-1663 Chinese Red but the first pair were painted red using nail polish back in 1992) so unlike protected color schemes such as the signature Burberry plaid and the Louis Vuitton monogram Louboutin has not only sparked an interesting conversation in the fashion world but he has learned an expensive lesson... when applying for a trademark, being overly broad is not a good thing.

Red is possibly the most emotionally intense color, so it is no wonder it has these fashion houses fighting over it. The color of blood and fire, red is associated with everything from passion and love to danger and power. Red stimulates people to make quick decisions, a good thing when these red soled beauties run anywhere from $450 to $4,000 a pair.

Red is also used as an indicator of courage, and you need courage when pulling off red on your lips, in your wardrobe and in your home. Red is hard, reds don't always play well with others. Various shades of red will often fight instead of blending harmoniously the way blues and greens do. That being said, pulling off red correctly can stop a person in their tracks...

While you might not be keen on throwing red on the walls...after all there was that great scene in Sex and The City with the red wall

Red does make a great accent color- I love it as an unexpected pop of color for a light fixture

it also makes a great statement as a piece of accent furniture

And if you have read my blog before, well, you know how I feel about white walls...

But I am loving this white hallway lined with black and white photos framed in red!

And while red can be bold and harsh in many instances, you really can't go wrong with red leather...

These red leather sofas are timeless and the red will wear beautifully, much like a great pair of jeans- they will just get better with age. And I can actually attest to this as I own a red leather sofa- I inherited it, it is older than me and has lived with almost every member of my family at some point...if only that thing could talk! probably best that it can't!

Why not deck out the bedroom in the color of passion??

and don't be afriad to set the tone early and use red on the outside of your house, it is a front door classic.

adore the matching red sconces! very fun for a bungalow, cottage or cabin!

And if your still on the fence about red, take some advice from Bill Blass:

"Red is the ultimate cure of sadness."

Today is Your Day!!!

2011-07-19T15:24:00.000-04:00

Welcome to the world my sweet niece Lyla! today is your day!!!

July 19th: Tangerine (Pantone 15-1247)

Inquisitive

Talented

Independent

Being born today: you are constantly learning and exploring life and all its wonders. Whether you are an artist or an analyst, you delve deep into whatever it is that captures your interest. Although you are social and need to interact with others, you have a very strong autonomous side.

How Tangerine will benefit you: Your personal color helps you integrate the outgoing with the introverted side of your nature. Wearing and surrounding yourself with the color tangerine increases clarity and receptivity.

It works wonderfully with your Mom's least favorite color (but your auntie's favorite)...Pink!

and thankfully, because you will no doubt grow up to be a huge Tar Heel fan like the rest of the family...

it pairs perfectly with light blue!

Welcome to the world Sweet Baby Lyla!

I can't wait to meet you!

xoxo

hate it or love it, the underdogs come out on top...

2011-07-19T09:43:00.000-04:00

"Hate it or love it, the underdogs come out on top."
-50 Cent

For anyone who has been house hunting lately, I am willing to guess you are about as over granite counter tops as I am. Now, I mean no offense to anyone who has these- they are a lovely upgrade option in any home but in this world of mass produced homes and their "upgrades" I am loving that some unlikely materials are finally getting their due and breaking into more main stream homes... So as the summer comes to a boiling point and drives you back inside and you start to ponder ripping up your kitchen consider using a less traditional material.

Stainless Steel- the material de jour for your kitchen appliances has hit the counters as well! They are sleek and hard working and scream that you know what you are doing in the kitchen. Stainless Steel will not patina and it is non-porous making it a great antibacterial and stain resistant option. It does scratch fairly easily so you will need a cutting board around constantly... but it adds character when you do mar the surface a bit...

Eleek tiles are 100% recycled aluminum and offer a slightly easier install than a solid surface like the stainless steel. However, these babies run about $95 per square foot so they are a really great statement for a small kitchen.

Zinc has a bit more of a traditional feel to it, especially is you let it turn to the blue-gray patina... a staple of oyster bars, it makes a great statement in a house- especially for a large center island.

Alkemi is one of the most fun new products on the market...scrap aluminum shards are sunk into resin forming the unique squiggle pattern that gives depth of pattern but also reflects light and gives a bit of shimmer to a kitchen.

Keeping with the more modern feel, glass is appearing all over the place as an option for counter tops. It is sleek and cool and very low maintenance. you can also use lighting under the counter to create stunning visual effects in your kitchen that you would never have conceived before...

For a truly gorgeous traditional touch consider pewter. A more formal and decidedly french touch, the edges are often molded into a decorative pattern and left untreated it turns to a soft charcoal patina that hearkens the romance of a french bistro or brasserie...

And my current favorite underdog...copper!

Not just for pennies, this super material is perfect for counter tops...it is highly antibiotic- without any extra help e coli dies on copper within hours of contact (it can survive on other surfaces for months-gross!)

You can keep it polished to maintain the golden glow or let it turn into its unique patina of burnished greens and browns- even the living finish maintains its antibiotic traits!

So as you sit around enjoying the AC during these dog days of summer, consider giving your kitchen a truly unique upgrade with a new counter top that I guarantee your neighbors will not already have...

She whom you can neither name nor measure...

Legend states that Aphrodite, the Greek Goddess of love, beauty and sexuality was actually born out of sea-foam. For a goddess who had many lovers and whose beauty could incite war it is fitting that the descriptors for Sea Foam (Pantone 12-0313) are Capable, Enterprising and Talented.

July 13th's color, Sea Foam, encourages action, joy and participation with others... all things that Aphrodite had no problems with- so why not bring a little into your life.

When paired with tomato red it gives a fresh feel that is a far cry from the sea foam schemes of the early nineties florida style I instantly think of when i hear the word sea foam..

the sea foam accents are soothing and complementing of the neutrals while the red pops and enlivens the whole room

Aphrodite's not the only thing to come from the sea foam...sea shells look perfectly at home on display against a sea foam wall

golden accents sparkle like the sun in a sea foam and neutral palette

I have a huge weakness for sea glass and old bottles... group them in clusters where the sun can catch them or use them for impromptu vases for flowers from your yard...

and it's not just for your walls- sea foam actually looks amazing with a deep golden tan (full disclosure- I feel 31 is a bit too old for sea foam nails but if I was 16 again I would totaly rock it!)

I found these beauties on Etsy... summer tan + flowy sundress+ sea foam earrings= summertime chic

no one can love you quite like a sister...

2011-07-12T15:20:00.000-04:00

or embarrass you quite like a sister can. I love my sister, my ~~big~~ older sister (she has a complex about being the BIG sister- but she is taller than me...) she is my best friend in the whole world and even after 31 years I still look up to her as if she hung the moon. However, my wonderful sister has recently gotten it in her mind that embarrassing me shall be her new summer game...

Not being the type to just take things lying down- I feel as though I will go ahead and make a preemptive move- I have no shame...

I am a 31 year old American that has never eaten a hamburger- I'm not a vegetarian...I was a picky kid and now it is just a matter of principal.

This is my idea of camping...

I am a huge nerd about light bulbs...but really it can be handy to know what kind of light is most flattering and most energy efficient- I mean really it is just good sense to know these things!

I love The Office and still frequently use "that's what she said" as a come back line.. and yes- I am an even bigger nerd that I have the floorplan to the Dunder Mifflan office- I am aware of that!

I have a thing about bath tubs... I love them!

need I reference the previous embarrassing bathtub posting???

Oh well- this could be the beginning of a war so if you missed it here it is again

I sometimes play with my food...opps! sorry sissy that embarrasses you not me- remember???

I have a ~~mild~~ severe obsession with the color pink, however I have learned to love my birthday color of Golden Apricot...

I can be quite the snob about flowers... I love flowers but HATE baby's breath- it is just a filler flower!

I have wasted hours of my life flinging little birdies at piggies...

I still love Disney Princesses and I still believe in happy endings and fairy godmothers

I indulge in bad television...from teenage dramas to soap operas...

I think sweet tea is the only kind of tea there should be! and no one does it better than Bojangles- I don't care what you people up here say about Popeyes- I'm a Bojangles kinda girl! and yes- I do have a passionate opinion on the matter!

there is a very real part of me that thinks I would have probably done better in the 1950s... after all owning 2 sewing machines was much more of a status symbol back then than it is now...

So my dearest sister- bring it on! You are the one that taught be to be brave and bold and to always be proud of myself and to stand up for what I believe in and for that I will always be grateful...but I warn you, if you want to start the embarrassment war- you also taught me how be scrappy and how to push your buttons right back!

But no matter if you do succeed (or even if you just embarrass yourself in the process) you will always be my ~~BIG~~ older sister and I will love you no matter what!

No matter how busy you may think you are...

2011-07-12T11:00:00.001-04:00

"No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance" -Confucius

I fully admit- I am a Kindle user...I love it- it is so light, fits in my back pocket- really it rules. But I do love books- the ones I love I read over and over again. I had kind of forgotten the romance of a good book till a rather charming young man put one in my hands as I was headed out of town for the 4th of July holiday... I love the way a book can speak to you in subtle ways - the page that is worn more than others or the page that the book falls open to because of the spine being cracked... So after a few days of taking up residence in the hammock and reading an actual book it is making me question my beloved techie gadget a little...

Few things make as lovely a backdrop to a room as a bookshelf full of stories and memories...

merchandise your shelves with art and artifacts that compliment your favorite tales

or choose your own unique method of arranging them!

Books are a universal item- they go with any style house and any type of decor from sleek and modern to cozy and traditional

stack up your favorites on your coffee table- they not only say quite a bit about you but make for wonderful conversation starters...

have trouble sleeping? surround yourself with old classics- it worked in high school for putting you to sleep...

Books can serve as your pop of color of color in a neutral room

lining the walls of hallways with shelving is a great way to get some use out of an otherwise often over looked area. Plus I love the juxtaposition of hanging artwork on the shelves too...

and unless you have a super extensive wine collection what other thing can you collect that would warrant installing a motorized harness in your home??

I love this idea of using books as wall art!

Little windows on the spines of old classics take me right back to childhood and The Indian in the Cupboard...can you imagine the wonder on a child's face if they spied these books on a shelf...

Not quite sure what you do if you if you want to read one of those books but I love that this coffee table was constructed of books!

For the couple that shares a book loving passion this display was the perfect backdrop for their wedding festivities

And for those of you who are determined to make the 100% shift to the Kindle way of life there is still a little something for you to help show your love of other's words...

Bookshelf wallpaper!

So....

DLR-thank you for reminding me...
