Soul Surfer Movie: the true story of Championship Surfer Bethany Hamilton

While I was in New Zealand I saw a program on television capturing a day in the life of Championship Surfer Bethany Hamilton. If you remember...she's the girl who experienced a traumatic shark attack and lost an arm. But she didn't let the accident keep her from doing what she was born to do...surf!

Having grown up in Hawaii (as Bethany has) I have always loved the ocean. I can remember boogie boarding and body surfing as a child and enjoying hanging out at the beaches continually. Recently when I was in New Zealand I was able to go surfing at Raglan Beach and I loved every moment! As the waves came roaring towards me and I scrambled to get on the board to ride them in I imagined what my life might have been like if I had stayed in Hawaii instead of moving to the mainland...and eventually inland...I might have aspired surf.

Tonight I had the crazy opportunity to go to a special screening preview of the new movie "Soul Surfer" that will open in theatres worldwide on April 8. It's based on the true story of Bethany's love for surfing and her struggle to continue after the shark attack. The movie is very well done! I highly recommend it. It speaks of Bethany's deep faith in God and overwhelming determination to be who she is meant to be in this life. Top actors like Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid are in the movie, along with singer/songwriter Carrie Underwood. The action is intense, the story is inspiring, and I gotta say...it tugged on my heart strings!

Auckland to America

I got to spend some time in Auckland on my last day in New Zealand. My friend took me to the city center where we enjoyed some coffee at Starbucks and a walk by the waterfront. Auckland reminded me a little bit of Seattle where I used to live and I enjoyed the sights, sounds, and diversity of a big city set by the water.

I'm now back in the States and working my way through jetlag. I will need time to process my holiday in New Zealand and all the adventures I experienced. I may try to blog a little bit more as memories and thoughts come to mind.

But for now...I will say: "Thank you New Zealand! I had a great time!"

last day in Raglan

today is my last day in Raglan. i'm really going to miss it here! i head back home to the States tomorrow...so i'll be going to Auckland to catch my flight out. i decided that today would be a relaxing one around Raglan. i walked down to the village...

had a coffee at the bohemian Bobo's coffeehouse and wrote a little in my journal...

then i took a walk on the beach to enjoy the sand and the water...

i'm going to miss the beach and the ocean...A LOT!!!!

on my way i discovered a jelly fish that had washed up on the beach amidst shells and other things...the tide was coming in...so i made my way back with a tearful farewell.

then in the afternoon i took a trip to Bridle Veil Falls. it was so beautiful to see this on my last day here. i will miss the amazing beauty that New Zealand so naturally displays. i've had a wonderful time in this gorgeous country...and it has now made it's way into my heart...i know i will return for more adventures!

going to church

while here in New Zealand i made sure to experience going to church a couple of times. it's an amazing feeling to worship God with the Body of Christ in different congregations in other countries. Gateway church in Hamilton.

i went to a Sunday night service at Gateway church in Hamilton...rockin worship, great teaching from a missionary to South Africa, freeing ministry & prayer time, and some really cool friends made! this church (about a thousand members) made me think of my home church Boise Vineyard...and then i found out that it was actually modeled after Vineyard USA. i also had the opportunity to talk with the worship/arts pastor about art ministry. www.gatewaychurch.org.nz

St. Peters Anglican church in Raglan.

today i went to a midweek Holy Communion service at St. Peter's Anglican church in Raglan...beautiful stained glass windows, familiar liturgy, friendly people. i enjoyed celebrating the Eucharist with this little band of Anglicans (Episcopal). they were very welcoming to me. this church service (because of it being so small...only 5 older ladies were there) made me feel like i was at a midweek service at St. Michael's Episcopal Cathedral in Boise where i like to attend. the church here is small (at most 30 people) but they have huge caring hearts! we prayed for the people in Christchurch who were devastated by the earthquake yesterday.

i'm so glad that i was able to worship with both churches while here in New Zealand...it was really good.

walking the labyrinth in New Zealand

while here in New Zealand i've connected with the Maori symbol...the KORU...which is depicted as a circular swirl. i've purchased one to wear around my neck. it means "new beginnings".

it reminds me of the ancient contemplative tool of prayer called a Labyrinth. i have taken a seminar about utilizing the labyrinth for contemplative prayer when i lived in Seattle and had the opportunity to walk one there. years later i walked one at the ancient monastic site in Glendalough, Ireland. and recently found a labyrinth in Boise, Idaho where i live.

today while in Hamilton...i had the amazing opportunity to walk a prayer labryinth at an Anglican Retreat Center...

it was on the grounds of the center...created by cutting out the design in the grass...

it's quite a relaxing experience to walk and pray into the center and back out again...i love how it calms my mind and my spirit and helps me to focus on listening to the voice of God in my heart.

i feel very blessed to have been able to experience this ancient practice while here in New Zealand...it was like a little romantic journey for me.

One thing I've had fun with while here in New Zealand is being able to experience a great amount of the local art scene...through art galleries, art exhibitions, colorful murals, and conversations with artists.

I've learned about new ways to hang art in galleries...like this round hole & peg hanging system in a gallery in Raglan...

gotten to see a pottery workshop at the Raglan wharf...

enjoyed this wall mural outside of a backpackers hostel near the beach...

went to an art opening at a local shoe shop...

experienced the local scenery through a resident artist's eyes...

marveled at the colorfully painted vans for tourism...

enjoyed a new take on some older art...

gazed at some modern views of New Zealand patterns...

hung out at an artsy-bohemian cafe...

chatted with an artist painting for his living on the east coast...

and viewed a beach I was unable to stand on...through a painters eyes.

I've really had a great time enjoying the art of New Zealand...whether it be tribal Maori art or modern Kiwi art...it's all been inspiring and inviting to my artistic heart.

I love to eat fresh seafood! So you can imagine that one of the things I've wanted to do while here in New Zealand was to eat lots of seafood...and I've gotten to eat quite a bit...and quite a variety while I've been here...in fact, every bit of fresh seafood I've had has been a first for me! Here's what I've eaten so far:
My friend's husband went fishing and caught some Snapper one day...and that night we ate it! Oh soooooooooooooo amazing!!!!

Then one night we had fish pies with smoked Kingfish in them! Wow!!! Yummmmmmy!!!!

Then there was the night we got fish and chips from the local chippy in Raglan...the fish was fresh Tarakihi. Oh my gosh that was goooooooooooooooooood fish and chips!!!!

And when I was spending time on the Coramandel we went to lunch and I had fresh steamed mussels sauted in butter and garlic....mmmmmmmmmmhmmmmmmmm =)

I'm in seafood heaven!!!!

Roadtrip to Narnia: the East Coast Beaches

This beachbum artistical girl loves any opportunity to be at a beach near the ocean. I grew up on the coasts of the US and also in Hawaii...so deep down I'm a water lover at heart. Living in Idaho I miss the ocean a great deal. This trip to New Zealand has been a way to fill up my "water-love-tank"! So after a few days hanging in the surf town of Raglan on the west coast...my friend and I made a roadtrip to the eastcoast of North Island to enjoy the white and pink sand beaches was quite a treat!

We drove to the Coramandel Peninsula for a few days. It was a bit rainy and overcast on the first day, but that didn't stop me from exploring around the colorful rocks.

This part of New Zealand's coasts reminded me a bit of the Oregon coast back in the States. Lots of little island outcrops and rocky formations. The next couple of days we had great weather!

One of the days my friend surprised me with a trip to Cathedral Cove where they filmed part of the Narnia movie Prince Caspian. This was amazing for me (as I love the Narnia movies and had just painted 3 wall mural scenes of Narnia in a bookstore before I left for this trip).

If you've seen Prince Capian you'll recognize that triangle rock outcrop in the center. The beach nearby is the beach that the children run on when they first enter Narnia in that movie. We normally could've walked that beach...but due to a recent storm that eroded the pathway down to it, we were unable to go to the beach. But at least I could slightly see it from above.

We were staying in a house just about a 5 minute walk to the beach. Yes!!!! OH I LOVED IT!!!!

The beaches there were practically empty! Though it's the heat of the summer, the school holidays are over and so there aren't many people around. I took advantage of this solitude and did something I wouldn't normally do...I enjoyed a good run (seriously, a full on sprint) down the beach...

and then had a blast playing in the water as I turned my body into the surf, letting the water rush around my legs...what a feeling!!!...

as the water would suck on back out to sea...I would burst out laughing and do it all again...sigh. I'm very happy here....

in the land of Middle Earth and Narnia! =)

As I've blogged before...the beach is a way of life in Raglan...I got to spend an afternoon at the surf beach over the weekend.

This bit made me think of Hawaii...I used to live there as a kid...

I got to go roadtripping with my friend. We drove to the east of North Island...through Hamilton and Cambridge...and on to Middle Earth. Yes...that's correct! I actually got to go to the movie site that they filmed Hobbiton at in the Lord of the Rings trilogy! but unfortunately I signed a paper that said I wouldn't post any photos or stories of my time there on-line. So just pretend that right here....you'd see a lot of really cool stuff and read about a lot of really cool stuff. sigh. sorry. We stayed over night in a hotel in Rotorua and enjoyed a good night sleep after an eventful roadtrip.

Today we headed to Rotorua (a region and town) where there are Maori cultural centers and a thermal park (much like a smaller version of Yellowstone National Park in the States). This is a traditional Maori design.

the Maori people are a beautiful tribal people with rich heritage. I truly enjoyed the dances and songs and the stories told.

After the show we walked along trails to see the mudpools and other thermal attractions in the area.

It smelled of sulfur...very reminiscent of Yellowstone! The geyser shot up 90 feet in the air!!!

Then we headed back to Raglan ...and tomorrow we will visit a Kiwi House....where the National bird is featured. What an amazing few days!!! Lots to process still...

Raglan: a bohemian lifestyle

I really love the town of Raglan. It's everything I imagined...it's small, it's friendly, it's main street is filled with art galleries, coffee houses, surf shops, fish n chip shops,...and it sits right at the water. I could see myself living here if I had that sort of opportunity. The people are my kind of people...surfers, artists, hippies, granolas and those who love the relaxed bohemian lifestyle that Raglan offers. I fit right in!!!! yes...that's me laying out on the beach after going for a swim in the ocean.

This is the house I'm staying at. My friend's husband built it (he does construction for a living). It's in an ideal location with a view of the water and plenty of outdoor deck space for BBQs and parties. I've met a few of their friends and neighbors and they are all lovely.

It's about a 20 minute walk from the house to the heart of Raglan. Yesterday I had the chance to explore on my own for the day...so after a leisurely morning (breakfast of Mueslix and toast, and a wonderful cup of cofee) I set out on foot to have a look around the town.

As I walked along I passed this mural that was painted on a water tower. Being an artist that does a lot of mural painting...I admired the design and thought about how many hours and how much man-power it would've taken to do something of this scale. and being a leader (and gallery curator) in a large artist community called VineArts in Boise, Idaho (www.vineartsboise.org) I am always interested in the art scene wherever I travel. So armed with my business cards and informational brochures I decided to do some networking. Raglan has quite a large community of artists for being such a small town. My friend knows a lot of the gallery owners, so I popped in on several to have a chat...artist to artist, and gallery curator to gallery curator. I went into the Matapihi art gallery and they had artwork displayed from Ragland artists and artists from all over New Zealand. I enjoyed chatting with the curator Ardre Foote about the art styles of New Zealand (the artists like to incorporate the native Maori symbols and patterns into their art). I stopped into the Combined Artist Studios+Gallery (www.artistsgallery.co.nz) to talk with artist & curator Amanda Watson (she is a really good friend of my friend). The Combined Gallery is a studio collective that has studio space for three artists to work and then a gallery to display their work.

Here is a painting by Amanda Watson. One of the styles she does are these amazing abstract seascapes in oil. Being a lover of water as I am...I love love love her stuff!!

I also stopped into the Tidal Bottega art & floral Gallery (www.tidalbottega.co.nz) owned by artist Yvette Harry-Wright. She is also a good friend of my friends.

She does these mind blowing acrylic abstracts that have hidden meanings and symbolism. This painting (a 3 piece series) tells the story about Creation to Christ to Revelation...all covered in the blood of Christ. Amazing stuff!! She covers her paintings with a thick layer of acrylic resin to get a glass-like shine.

After I took a couple of hours to look around I found my way to a coffee house that serves Raglan Roast coffee...this one is called Bobo's. After getting my white coffee (espresso coffee with milk)I joined a few other afternoon chillaxers and sat down at a picnic table outside of the shop to drink my coffee, do a bit of journaling and painting...and chillax.

This is the coffee house. Yes...I know...it's so...ME!!! Palm trees and a surf shop next door...tribal tattooed surfers and dreadlock wearing hippies hanging out inside and outside.

This sign sums up the feel of Raglan...am I "home" or what?!!!! This is like the signs we put up in the VineArts Studio!!!

Here is one of the surf shops...lined with surfboards. I might have the opportunity to go surfing while I'm here in Raglan. I'm hoping I get to...it all depens on the waves and weather. My friends surf a lot and they tell me that right now the waves have been quite big...ideal for experienced surfers...but not so ideal for those who have never surfed before. .Raglan seems to live and breath surfing...everywhere I go people are talking about surfing.

After my coffee time I headed to the beach to enjoy some time at the water. I did a little bit of beach combing for shells. There are heaps of them everywhere!!! I found my way to a spot on the beach where I saw absolutely no one else...yes, I was all alone on the beach!!! Talk about living a dream!!!! O. My. Goodness!!! So with the beach towel poised perfectly on the black sand, sunblock lotion applied, and my bathing suit ready to get wet, I headed into the warm Pacific Ocean.

You see...for most of my childhood I grew up on both the east coast & west coast of the States (my father was in the Navy)....and for part of that childhood I lived in Hawaii. These days...living in Idaho, I sometimes feel like a landlocked seafarer...and I need the occasional reminder that I am still a lover of water. So this artistical-sunworshipping-bohemian-hippified-beachbum is happy as a clam today to be on this tropical island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean half way round the world. This is exactly what the doctor ordered for me...this holiday is perfect timing. My heart is breathing in the warm breezes, tasting the salty sea, feeling the soothing sun, and swimming in the depth of the waters.

Revive. Replenish. Refresh. Renew. More of this Lord...More!!!!

I'm surrounded by water here!!! The Pacific Ocean is vast and wild!!! Raglan is located on the west coast of the north island. It's about 5,000 people with a small surfer-hippie-artist town feel. It's known for both it's black & white sandy beaches and it's championship surfing waves. Today I did a little touring around the town and along the water with my friend. It's beautiful here! It was very comfortable as its the middle of summer...lots of sun and tropical breezes. Tomorrow I'll go back to hang out for the day on my own...get some coffee and lunch, visit some art galleries, do a bit of shopping, enjoy the beach...and soak it all up. I'm still blown away that I'm actually here! Can't wait to explore!!!

I'm in New Zealand!!!

Kia Ora! After nearly 18 hours of travel time I finally arrived in Auckland, on the North Island of New Zealand! My friend collected me at the airport and we drove 2 hours to Raglan by the ocean where I will be staying with friends. I'm a bit jet lagged but ready for whatever comes my way on this adventure in Middle Earth. Today (which is Thursday in New Zealand and Wednesday in Idaho) we will kick back and chillax around Raglan. It's been wonderful to catch up with my friend (whom I met in 2001 when I was living in Scotland). I've already had a coffee from the Raglan Roasterie at Te Uku, eaten a bowl of Mueslix for breakfast, and set my sights on the water.

I can sense the freedom my heart has longed for...it's just moments away!

Yes...I can hear my name being called...and I am bound by my heart to answer.

Soon this artist & world traveler will be flying yet again across the ocean to a land far far away. This time it won't be the mighty Atlantic that I cross...but the vast Pacific. I'm heading to a set of islands that have the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Tasman Sea on the other. It's a land of Kiwis and Maori, a land of sheep and surfing, a land of endless beaches and snowcapped mountains, a land of recreation and adventure, and a land of Narnians and the peoples of Middle Earth.

Next stop: New Zealand.
