Once again as the floral fragrance of summer is fast disappearing, you would want to watch that smile spread across your little kid’s face, fresh as a rain drop. School has started and on it's way. Is there a better hour to help him head start, a new beginning? Join us and take delight in watching the fascinating growth and enrichment of his persona. Let’s get a move on? As much as you would love the sight of those shining grades in his score sheets, when left to its own, class room learning is let’s face it – boring. But then again, when teamed up with a generous dose of infotainment from educational games, it will truly enhance his holistic development.

Different roads lead to the same castle, we say. Why should only weekends have all the fun? 20 minutes for fun every day is all we ask to make a difference - to nurture his brain and open up his imagination with our tried and tested educational games. Over the last several decades, there has been a lot of research pertaining to the two hemispheres of the human brain. Even so, the right half works with feelings- imagination, fantasy, intuition and imageries. Now this hemisphere cuts it! It really does.

All the same, it’s intriguing when child psychologists point out that an average kid uses a very limited portion of his brain for his class room learning, say about 10%. The rest is simply untapped! Ever wondered, how it’s like to use only 10% of your fingers – that is one? You will loath the very idea of having a soup or holding a pen. If your child takes to math and science like a chore, and the overpowering feeling of inadequacy grips him, we are here to help. With the help of alternate learning methods, we will help your kid explore himself, find his inner strengths and build an aura of self-confidence. This fun filled mentally stimulating play will engage the right half of the brain as he walks through shades of anticipation, pleasure, surprise, understanding and poise.

The Angry Dinosaur

A huge obnoxious dinosaur,
Just barged its way through our front door!

It didn't knock or ring the bell,
Just crashed right in to where we dwell!

It snarled and snorted 'cross the hall,
Stood on (and burst!) my brand new ball.

It shook the paintings off their hooks,
And threw my dad some evil looks!

It tramped right in to our front room,
And left a smelly stench of doom!

It circled round and round the chairs,
Whilst we all stood and said our prayers!

With creaking weight it then sat down,
The chair collapsed, my mum did frown.

The dinosaur with eyes bright red,
Then slowly turned its ugly head!

"I've had enough," it gave a growl,
It sighed and sank, its face a scowl.

"I really tried! I'm in distress!
I didn't win the fancy dress!"

I choose two different crafts of Dinosaurs. One is a costume and one is a puppet. With either craft your child can act out emotions as the Dinosaur. Ask them what makes you feel this way, help them come up with positive ways to deal with emotions. Finally, let your child know that is OK to be...angry, sad, scared, happy... It's a great time to talk with your child. It will be a relaxed, fun, positive learning experience.

Dinosaur Costume

Materials you will need: 3 cracker boxes for little feet (I used baby cereal boxes) or 3 cereal boxes for bigger feet, cardstock or cereal box for cut-outs, 2 small Styrofoam balls, 2 googley eyes, glue gun, string or yarn, green acrylic paint, white acrylic paint.

Have your child wear a smock, apron or a man's shirt - button up at the back. Acrylic paint will come off clothes if washed out right away, the same with any material. It's best to have your child put on their "painting clothes. Paint washes off hard surfaces and skin even after dried. I also recommend using a shower curtain liner on the table for easy clean up. (dollar store $1)

Step #1 - Cut rectangle shapes, which will be feet openings, closer toward the back of one end. Make the rectangle cut-outs just big enough for you child to slip his foot in toes first. Step# 2 cut out from cardstock 8 triangles. These will be the feet claws that will go on the top of the front of each foot.

Step# 3 - Cut a rectangle/square to fit your child's head. Cut closer to the back of the box to save room for the head to stick out. Step# 4 - Cut out of card stock triangle shaped scales. Save room at the bottom for a tab to fold in half in order to attach it to the head. Make the length of the row of scales to go from the back to about 3/4 of the box. (need room for eyes). Now cut out triangle shaped teeth that will go across the front of the head on the bottom.

Step #5 Glue scales to the top of the head with a glue gun (with the help of an adult). Step# 6 Cut out Dino hands out of cardstock about 2-3x the size of your child's hands with claws. Step# 7 Paint claws and teeth white, paint scales any color you like, Paint head, feet and hands green. Let dry.

When dry glue claws on ends of feet. On the back side of each hand glue string/yarn onto the middle with a glue gun. These are handles.

Glue the triangle teeth on bottom of the front of the head with a glues gun. Glue Styrofoam balls on each side of the front of head. To these glue on googly eyes.

Dinosaur Puppet

What you will need: 2 toilet paper rolls, construction paper, googley eyes, wooden dowel or craft stick, two colors of paint for your Dino.

Step# 1 - Cut out triangle shapes out of a strip of construction paper construction paper. (Save the scrap triangle cut-outs.) Leave room for a fold over tab on the bottom of the spikes. The length of the spike strips should be the full length of 1 TP roll, and just a little over half on the other roll. Fold tab on the bottom of the spikes and glue to TP rolls. Put the shorter strip at the end of the TP roll and forward to the middle.

Trim the back of the head in a half circle. Cut two straight lines half way down the front of the head. Cut out small triangles to create teeth. Glue the head to the neck.

Paint the Dino your favorite Dinosaur color and paint the teeth white.

Glue the triangle cut-outs saved from the spikes in spots over the Dino. Glue two googley eyes on each side. Glue the wooden dowel or craft stick to the inside of the neck.

Do not restrict nutritious foods because of their fat content. Offer a variety of foods from the four food groups.

Offer a variety of nutritious foods, including some choices that contain fat such as 2% milk, peanut butter and avocado.

Satisfy their thirst with water.
Encourage young children to drink water to quench their thirst and replenish body fluids. Canada 's Food Guide recommends that children and adults choose vegetables and fruit more often than juice. Children also need a total of 500 mL (2 cups) of milk every day to help meet their requirement for vitamin D.

Respect your children's ability to determine how much food to eat.
While parents and caregivers determine the selection of foods offered, young children can determine how much food they need. Throughout the day, children are able to adjust their intake. This explains why some children eat more at one meal than at another.

Be a good role model.
Be a role model for healthy eating. Start by having meals together as a family as often as possible. Turn off the TV. Set a good example. If your child sees you eating your vegetables - he/she will be more likely to eat them too!

Be patient.
If an unfamiliar food is rejected the first time, it can be offered again later. The more often children are exposed to a new food the more likely they are to accept it.

Organize fun physical activities.
Young children rely on parents and caregivers to provide opportunities for physical activity. Some ideas include: bicycling, walking, dancing, games of ball or tag in the summer and sledding or building a snowman in the winter. For more great ideas check out tips for being active.

Number Punch Counting Game

What you will need: hole punch construction paper, glue

Cut out 10 rectangle shape card from construction paper. Starting with one write the number

1 at the top. Show your child how to use a hole punch then have her punch out one hole

for the number 1. Continue with each card up to the number 10.

Next Step:

Write and cut out the words one - ten. Match word with correct number

card.

Next step:

Count the number of holes two number cards have together. (add)

Work on these cards at the most 15 to 20 minutes at a time.

Labeling Game

I used this with my Son Cody. It started with a place mat with his name on it. Every meal I would

point to each letter and say the letter. Cody could spell and recognize his name at 10 months. So...I

took it further. I labeled his whole room example bed, dresser, chair, closet, books. Then I made it

more challenging. I put a blue circle on his top right hand drawer. On the circle I wrote socks. Above

I made a card that said above, under the card it said right. So he learnt that his socks were where it

was written in a blue circle. They were on the right hand drawer above the "between drawer". Use

shapes, colors, words like under, between, above, beside, behind, in front, over, under, right, left.

and keep it fun. Start out with one word and add one new label at a time. Introduce each new idea

only after your child has mastered the current label.

I love this idea of Early Explorers that I became an affiliate. Your kids will have a amazing time exploring different parts of the world. Independence Day

It was on this date in 1776 that the Declaration of Independence was officially adopted. This is why the Fourth of July is also known as "Independence Day." July 4, 1776 was the day our country's founders officially declared their separation from the country that ruled over them.

It was because the American colonists wanted to form their own government that they declared their independence from British rule, and fought and won the American Revolution.

Now, over 200 years later, we celebrate the Fourth of July because it stands as a symbol of the day long ago when we ceased being British and became true Americans.

I would like to share a fun Poem about Independence Day with you...

Way Up in the Sky
(Tune: Row, Row, Row Your Boat) Wave, wave, wave the flag, Hold it very high. Watch the colors gently wave, Way up in the sky. March, march, march around, Hold the flag up high.

Eagle Craft

Glue two yogurt containers together and paint with blue acrylic paint.

Trace both hands on red construction paper and cut out. Glue one print to each side of yogurt containers. These will be the wings.

Cut out head as shown above. Make an orange triangle out of construction paper and fold in half and glue to head. Glue to top of body.

Place Marker Flowers

Cut out two egg cups from an egg carton and one circle from the lid of the carton to make one flower. Cut each cup into four points (triangles). Paint with acrylic paint red, white and blue, let dry. When dry glue the two cups together with the top petals filling the space between the bottom petals. Now glue center circle in the middle of the flower.

Place name tags between the petals. If you are eating out side paint a rock red, white or blue and glue flower to it.

Happy Birthday Canada!

Canada has a birthday on July 1st. Canada Day is a National holiday in Canada that is celebrated with family picnics, barbeques, and fireworks.

Canada Day is always celebrated on July 1^st, unless that date falls on a Sunday, in which case the holiday would be on Monday.

A long time ago, Canada belonged to Great Britain. Over time, parts of the country joined together and wanted to form their own government.

On July 1, 1867 Canada became an independent country with its own government. This new nation, which remained loyal to Britain, was called the Dominion of Canada. At that time there were only four provinces (Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick). These days, there are 10 provinces and 3 territories.

Before we get into the crafts, there are a couple of Poems about Canada I would like to share...

How to Make a Canadian Moose

What you will need...

toilet paper roll

brown and red acrylic paint

construction paper, glue and scissors

Step 1 - Cut out shapes above for the face, ears, antlers and eyes. Step 2 - paint toilet paper tube, antlers, larger part of the face brown (or use brown construction paper) let dry Step 3 - paint a red maple leaf on his tummy Step 4 glue all the cut outs together and on the toilet paper roll

Cut out head, ears, tail, eyes, white teeth and a black nose. Paint toilet paper roll, head, ears and tail brown - let dry. Glue together and onto the toilet paper roll.

Paint Q-tips red and blue and glue in a circle. To make the red, white and blue shooting sparks put a drop of paint on the paper and use a fork to spread it out in all directions.

Use handprints and fingerprints to create flag. I attached a streamer and some of the egg carton flowers (shown above how to make) to the streamer. You could add more streamers, maple leafs, stars...use your creativity to make yours uniquely your own.

Interactive games involve physical strength, movements of the body, joints and muscles. Games like kicking and throwing balls, jumping through letters and number cards, or simply walking and dancing are fun interactive games.

Benefits of Interactive Learning Games for Kids

Active learning motivates kids to learn more than textbooks and lectures. It challenges kids in a wide spectrum of subject matter that can be related to their real environment, their real life situations.

Win or lose kids learn to accept and manage different situations through interactive games. Physically and mentally, kids learn the process of self-control and self-direction. It motivates kids to deal with the strategies and how to accept failures and frustrations.

Interactive learning games like role playing and simulations rehearsed the kids in their present situations. It helps them better understand and prepare for real life challenges. It teaches the kids to solve problems with their own reasoning.

Group interactive games are also interesting and beneficial to kids. Especially shy kids, introvert, means they need enough time to get into the crowd. Group interactive games teach kids to absorb ideas, situations and their social interaction. It helps them build up character traits: sportsmanship, politeness, confidence and friendliness.

As Parents, How to Involve Yourself to Kids Interactive Learning Games

Parents and teachers serve as the role model for kids to get active into learning. In schools, interactive games are part of teaching the kids while they recover from boredom. Teachers are enthusiasts in introducing new games that catches attention.

At home as parents, we are responsible in supporting our kids even out of school. In just a few minutes a day, try to break down your time table and insert time to play, read and have fun with your kids. Plan and also motivate yourself to participate in a learning game with your kids. Sometimes it is relaxing to act like you’re a preschooler. In this way kids also challenge to show off their full potential in winning a game or advancing to the next level.

Give them a chance to win and have time to talk and deal with their achievements. Sometimes giving a reward to inspire them to study harder and do better. Sometimes let them lose the game, this is important to teach them how to accept failures. Here is your chance to comfort and explain what else to do in order to win. And let them understand that even losing the game more chances are still yet to come. Explain to them that in every games there is always a winner and a looser. Give them alternatives to push through working hard next time.

Usually kids don't want to lose, expect that they will want another rematch and will want to start the game all over again. Accept the challenge and you'll see they are even more active.

Bottom line is:

To enhance your kids physical, emotional and mental abilities, support and encourage them to play interactive learning games. This is an effective way to flourish the kids that has proven to have positive outcome. Kids are considered smart if they are physically, emotionally and mentally developed.

The time you spend with your kids from learning, playing and a happy family life is precious. Kids will treasure those times. It is the golden memories your kids will be proud of.

In this learning game kids will learn everyday day applications of mathematics and organize the information in a statistical graph.

The graphing learning game, which is both visual and physical, I have chosen for this post is for kids from Pre K – Grade 3

What you will need...

10 – 15 objects that are alike but come in different shapes, sizes or color. Examples are buttons, toy cars, beads, different shapes, small pieces of food like raisons, grapes… different colored shapes - more advanced objects in pairs like shoes, socks, mittens.

Paper, markers, scissors.

For the earlier levels I used colored heart shapes. I cut out 5 red, 3 blue, 2 yellow, 1 grey. Next I cut out a square for each color and a square for the numbers 1 – 5. I used a black piece of paper for the background.

Have your child cut out, color or choose objects to sort, count and graph. Put them into categories and count the amount in each. Next make the objects title square and the appropriate number squares. Put object squares along the bottom and number squares along the side. Have your child fill the graph in with chosen objects. Talk about how many there are in each category.

Next step count or add the total amount of objects in the graph. What if you took 1 away? 2? 3? What if you added 1…2…3...?

ADVANCED GAME: In my game we are using socks. I choose socks that are varied in color. Now it is time to sort the different types of socks. Make up a Title page for each category.

My categories are: white, grey and white and black. Help your child come up with titles for ways the socks can be sorted. Have your child lay their category titles in a row. Place each sock, in a line, into their respective category. Now have your child count the number in each category. Make number squares for the amounts counted and put along the side.

What category has the most socks in it? The least? How many socks total? What if you add 1…2…3…? Take away 1…2…3.

Write out sentences to describe your findings.

Next step: Since socks come in a pair ask the same questions adding the other sock into the equation. You could present with multiply by 2, or physically place the other sock in each line and point and count.

Try different objects, number of objects, sizes of graphs.

Your child has just learned how to sort and organize information mathematically and put them in a statistical graph!

There were many choices of arts and crafts suited for kids. In schools, teachers are working hard to introduce amazing and unique arts and crafts that interest the kids. At home, there are also exciting recreational arts and crafts to make fun for both parents and kids.

For preschoolers, blocks and puzzle games can be introduce as their first step of exercising their minds and body to solve simple problems. Elementary grades also have fun playing chess games, drawings, paintings or a favorite musical instruments. Games, arts and crafts are prepared and categorized according to children's age level. The concept of enforcing kids to get involved in arts and crafts is to develop their critical thinking in solving problems. Also, it helps them enhance their ability to communicate and deal with their emotions.

Arts and crafts provide the ability to strengthen body and mind muscles. Studies show that kids exposed to arts and crafts are able to complete educational milestones with ease. They can easily cope with their studies and are likely to be successful with their goals.

Materials needed for this Fun Frog Craft:

2 yogurt containers, green construction paper, red construction paper, green acrylic paint, googlely eyes, glue and scissors.

Step 1: Trace around open top of the yogurt container and cut out two copies of the shape traced on green paper. Glue each cut out to the open tops of each container. This will be the mouth.

Step 2: Glue the two back rims together and leave an object in the front of the mouth while the glue dries. This will result in a finished open mouth.

Step 3: When dry, paint the entire outside of the yogurt container green - you may need 2 coats.

Step 4: While drying, cut out two frog feet to fit on the bottom of the craft. Now cut out 2 long frog hands and accordion fold these. Cut out a long red frog tongue and curl with scissors.

Step 5: Glue the two feet to the bottom and two hands on the middle of the body. Glue the tongue in the frogs mouth and add two eyes.

I recommend a truly awesome book about a frog on his journey to find excitement and adventure. Readers follow the frog about on his search. He meets up with some interesting and some frightening characters and experiences. In the end he finds his place in the world...right back by his log! There's no place like home. I must add the illustrations are wonderful! The Title of the book is...
