It’s summer and I like lots of bloggers have taken a lot of time off from blogging.

There’s just something about longer days and warmer temperatures that make being online and focusing on writing a bit harder. Maybe its just reverting back to youth where we always got the summer off from school.

Anyhow, summer is coming to an end… or at least it will be in another month. It is now August and as we move into the busier seasons of the year it is time to pick up speed again on this blog.

Bad news spreads like fire, but with the help of social media websites like Twitter, Facebook,
and Youtube the news spreads at lighting speed. A single negative tweet or a status update on
a Facebook profile can destroy the hard-built reputation of a business in as little as a day. Social
media has drastically reduced the time frame for businesses to react. Businesses facing
negative public outrage or crisis management must be able to literally respond in minutes and
not days.

Here are the few tips that businesses can follow during Social Media Crisis Management:

Always Be Prepared
Crisis can happen anytime; you can’t predict it. Make sure that you already have a bulletproof
crisis management plan to execute should the need arise. Things like, “Who will
respond?” “Where the response is needed?” “Which social media platforms and profiles to use
in response to the out lash?” All of these questions should have answers well before a crisis hits.
A crisis can come without warning like the BP oil spill, so always keep yourself and your
company prepared.
Monitoring Is The Key
Social media has made it mandatory for PR professionals and business owners to consistently
monitor all kinds of news, blog posts, tweets, videos and other means of virtual communication
that’s related to your company or industry. Monitoring social media platforms is necessary 24/7
and can greatly improve your chance of reacting at the correct time during a crisis; sometimes
even before the situation gets out of control.
Transparency
Transparency these days is more important than ever; you can’t hide any kind of information
from your clients in digital age. It’s important for every business to be transparent and you’ve
made a mistake then admit it, accept it, and take responsibility. Be proactive in taking the blame
instead of waiting for public to call you out on it.
Show Them You’re Listening
Don’t remain quiet in the time of crisis; respond quickly and consistently with all updates. Tell
your side of the story and inform the public about the actions you’re taking to solve the
problems. Show everyone that you’re listening to them and you care about what they have to
say. Make sure that on social media websites you respond as quickly as possible to all
questions and concerns.
Start Early
Don’t wait for the crisis to jump on the social media bandwagon, if you have accounts on social
media websites, then use them. Invite your customers for conversations at regular intervals and
keep them updated with the latest happenings and developments in the company. Create a loyal
fan following on social media websites that can support you should bad times ever come around.
These five things are necessary when dealing with a crisis that has gone public; the steps of
social media crisis management.

This is an example of stupidity at the reins of corporate America. Or call it Tyranny alive and well in America.

Apple / ATT is a big, huge customer for Best Buy. Apparently so big that if you work for Best Buy and post anything negative about APPle or ATT on your own time – even if you don’t mention Best Buy or that you work for Best Buy – you could still lose your job.

It did for one person who made an awesomely humorous text-to-speech youtube video about iPhone buyers who buy it because it’s an iphone and for no other reason, when there are phones out there that are just as good if not better.

In the video there’s no mention at all of Best Buy, the store mentioned is called ‘Phone Mart’. There’s literally nothing about the video that could be linked back to Best Buy, yet the corporate execs at Best Buy somehow got wind that a Best Buy employee created the video.

Then they fired him, and now the video has gone viral based on the publicity and news-worthiness of Best Buy making the wrong decision. Frankly I hope that he sues the ass off of Best Buy, or at least starts a serious of humorous videos mocking Best Buy and apple. I’m sure that this guy as talented as he is could go on to make many more videos and find a way to monetize his videos.

Especially after getting one video with a couple million hits.

Attn: Best Buy! Good job. If Apple didn’t know that a Best Buy employee created this video, they sure do now – and a lot more people are going to know about what you did to try and take away someone’s right to free speech.

3. Write from the heart. Your readers will again be able to tell if you are simply blogging about what you think that people want to hear. When you write from the heart, it is captivating, inspirational, and attractive. This will help to keep visitors to your blog coming back for more because they will be hanging onto every word that you say.

4. Be vulnerable. This goes hand-in-hand with the previous point, but people really want to know you as a blogger. The definition of a blog is an online diary, so if you aren’t sharing who you are, people will not get to know you. In this manner, it is also useful to ask open-ended questions so that you can create conversations with your readers.

These tips are just the beginning in a successful blogging career, but they will help to separate you from the pack to make an impact as a blogger in your niche market!

Facebook is a popular social media site used by everyone you know, but could it be in danger of losing its hefty population? Many Facebook users have reported having concerns with their privacy policies so much so that they may delete their accounts entirely, and statistics reported that Facebook could lose its user population by up to 60%.

Another 16% said that they have already stopped using Facebook because they felt that they did not have enough control over their information, and a quarter of the people surveyed said that they would continue using this social media website. Facebook has attracted some recent criticism because of the issues with its privacy settings where users have to physically opt-out from sharing their information with other third parties that are not already their friends. Facebook is hoping to take a deeper look at their privacy policy in the near future, but it may not be enough to prevent the millions of people from deleting their accounts before that point.

Facebook Frustration

Many users have reported being frustrated with how little control they have over their private information, and many other users don’t understand how to control their privacy settings and find the entire process confusing. Experts feel that it would be much better for Facebook to ask users to opt-in to making their information public instead of having to opt-out.

It does seem unlikely that millions of people will delete their Facebook profiles entirely, but many users are becoming curious about the best way to protect their private information. Many people use Facebook for the sole purpose of private interactions with friends and family, and they don’t want other third parties that they have not officially accepted as their friends to see their new phone number, vacation pictures, or personal information.

If you are a Facebook user, you may be experiencing the same concerns with your privacy settings. The best thing to do is to be vigilant about your account information, determine the right privacy settings for you, and be careful about the information that you share online. It is no secret that the information that you post on Facebook can potentially be found online by a third party, which has happened to affect other people negatively in their jobs, relationships, and friendships. The moral of the story is to be careful what you say online until Facebook takes better control over their privacy settings!

It’s estimated that 75% of money spent locally gets recirculated locally, yet money spent at big box chains only 20-30% stays local – the rest gets funneled out of the community back to the corporate offices.

2. Stop Global warming, ONE Walmart at a time! Picture this scenario, you walk into walmart to buy a new hd tv. It’s a panasonic. This tv was shipped from asia to san francisco, CA. Then it’s shipped to a walmart hub in New York, then say you live in Utah – it’s shipped out the walmart nearest you.

Is it me, or does this seem like a lot of travel and a lot of wasted gas? Yet, by supporting giant companies who can afford to ship all over the place – you often get damaged goods – the more time spent traveling more chances of bouncing and breaking. You’re adding to the carbon emissions problem.

On the flip side by supporting local businesses  – generally speaking there’s a lot less transportation and waste involved.

3. Don’t wait till they’re all gone. There’s so many wonderful small little nooks and crannies in my town that I love to visit. Stan’s Donut Shop and Bill’s Donut Shops, Dewey’s Pizza, La Rosa’s Pizza, CiCi’s Pizza – all small businesses that are struggling to stay viable but have loyal fans.

If we don’t support these great local Dayton businesses then we’re not going to have them to support. There won’t be anything unique about Dayton anymore.

And that’s all good and well, but one thing I don’t hear much about is actual results. Social media evangelists talk in generalities and non-specifics, but there just isn’t enough focus on measuring the effectiveness of social media campaigns. As a result, most companies out there are probably wasting time, causing their social media use to be a costly distraction.

So, that brings up an important question: How can you measure the effectiveness of your social media campaign.

Keep reading to find out.

Start by setting your goals

First, you need something to measure against. A benchmark that lets you know if your social media efforts are moving your company in the desired direction. That’s where goal setting comes in. By setting specific goals for your social media campaign, you can better target your campaign and more accurately measure your results.

What are some of the most common social media goals?

· Drive traffic to your website

· Increase brand mentions

· Improve public perception of your company

· Get more inbound links pointed at your website

· Resolve customer complaints

· Climb the search engine rankings

· Get more sales

Now, although all of these goals are highly coveted, you have to be careful that you don’t try to bite off more than you can chew. Whenever you do too many things at once, you usually end up doing many things poorly instead of a few things really well.

Create a strategy for reaching your goals

Once you’ve identified your major goals, you need to come up with a plan for reaching these goals. Is Tweeting the solution to help you drive more sales? If so, what should you Tweet about and how often should you Tweet? Who in your company should be doing the Tweeting?

When creating your social media strategy, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

· Which social media channels are your customers using?

· Are your competitors using social media? If so, how?

· How can you tie social media into your other marketing efforts?

· Can you be authentic? Or do legal matters prevent you from getting the most from social media?

Measuring your results

Now that you have goals and a plan for reaching these goals, you can start to more accurately measure the effectiveness of your social media marketing campaign. This will help you to see what’s working and what can be improved.

When measuring your social media results, you should:

· Give the campaign time to work. You won’t see results over night. Social media requires consistency and commitment.

· Be willing to experiment and try new things. There is no single correct way to use social media. What works for once company may not work for you.

· Track time spent on social media. Social media can quickly become a costly distraction that causes you to put in far more time than is justified by the results it yields.

· Know when it’s time to pull the plug. If you’ve truly give your social media campaign time to produce results and nothing is happening, it’s time to consider a shift in your strategy. You also need to reassess your goals to truly make sure they’re realistic.

Social media isn’t for everyone

The simple truth is not every business can benefit from Tweeting, blogging, or whatever else. Not every company has an audience who actively uses social media, and for some companies, there will be far more effective and profitable ways to reach out to customers and drive sales.

Before you start “socializing your brand” you need to really spend time studying the current social media landscape. You have to figure out where your company can carve out a spot to gain attention and be successful. Otherwise, you’ll only end up wasting a lot of time and money.

Absolutely – that’s where I was at the Chicken / Egg scenario – how do I begin consulting, having never consulted or shown proven results for companies — but I think also people getting into social media consulting for the first time should know where they belong – which is at the bottom most likely, and go after smaller clients, slowly working themselves up for bigger companies.

For me my method of getting into the industry followed this path: Learned HTML/ CSS / PHP long time ago, installed wordpress 3 years ago, Learned blogging, began cross-linking blogs w/ social networks, then began learning and watching and reading all I could on these social networks, then put in effort to build my own networks in these, all while continuing to put out relevant content, guest posting here and there, then when I truly felt that I had my game together I found MarketingOC a firm in California that needed a social media strategist to assist them, remotely. Pay was low, but I jumped at the chance to even work for $8 an hour doing what I love.

Gradually as they get more and more clients I’m making more and more, and also building my own clientelle outside the firm. I’ve even been offered possible growth opportunities from within, and this has given me the confidence to solicit local businesses for marketing, and come up with my own offerings and opportunities. Soon I’m launching a Social Media Club charter between Dayton, and Cincinatti ohio. It all starts with baby steps though, and you have to have a plan and be willing to follow through on it.

First off Jay, wanted to stop by an apologize regarding a post I wrote a few weeks back that took some of your content, rewrote it a bit, and didn’t give due credit. I was a bit of a jerk about the whole thing, so I’m sorry- I’ll be sure to send some link-love your way in an upcoming post. Hope we can move on – with no hard feelings. -

As for my two cents – as someone who’s been blogging for awhile and is currently working with an actual social media marketing firm – there’s a lot of opportunity out there to help – even if you’re not a Jay Baer, Chris Brogan, or Gary Vaynerchuk.

Most small businesses couldn’t afford a Chris Brogan anyhow – with some consultants charging $500/hour. If you really think you have what it takes to be successful – then go for your dream. One word of advice though: Be genuine, don’t just say you know social media – have results to back it up. I got my job because of the sheer volume of search results for my name via google. Starting out though you may have to work for a lot less than you’d like – I started out at minimum wage, working my way up. Even an unpaid internship at a nice size company would be a good start under some circumstances.

My advice to businesses when choosing social media consultants: Shop around, and always compare their prices with their alexa rank and google search results, # of twitter followers, etc. The lower the price and higher their rankings the better the value.

Write, write, and write some more. This is a wonderful way to get found in search engines. It stands to reason that the more content that you push out into the blogosphere the more traffic and search engine juice you will get.

This is a true statement.. but it’s not completely realistic. I’ve been caught churning out 3-4 blog posts per day working like a dog for $20 a month, it’s really no way to live and it really doesn’t help. It’s not the best use of my time. I know – I myself have written a lot of blog posts saying: “If you want traffic – just keep writing more and more posts”. Well, I will let you in on a secret that has been sky-rocketing my blogs’ growth recently.

Before I shed this secret with you, I gotta warn you – for this to work you will need to focus heavy on a few articles per week. Sometimes working on 1 article for 4-5 hours if necessary. These posts need to be the highest quality imaginable.

Now, this isn’t a new thing. In fact I’ve blogged about it before, and the more and more that I do it the more flabbergasted I am by the results. My blog over at PatrickCurl.com on Social Media is about 2-3 months old. I had it up a year or two ago as a personal site but took it completely down.

Now that I’m consulting small businesses on social media, I’ve begun heavily branding myself. Check out the site  – it only has maybe 10-20 blog posts, and a pagerank of 1 – yet now it’s ranked on page 3-5 for the keyword: Social Media Consultant, and page 17 for Social Media Strategy(It’s moved up from page 30 a week ago).

I haven’t been comment spamming, or posting in forums. I haven’t been doing blackhat seo – as if I even knew how to do that.

My secret? – Guest Blogging.

Writing a good guest blog post can be extremely important to your marketing arsenal. So far I’ve written most of my content for QuickOnlineTips.com, as they are very friendly towards guest bloggers, have top-notch content, and they have terrific subscriber numbers, alexa rank, and much more.

When guest blogging – be sure to read all their rules for submissions before sending them. Most blogs would like an image to go along with your blog post so be sure to search Flickr for a Creative Commons licensed image to use in your blog post. Don’t be afraid to approach popular bloggers with your guest post. As long as you’ve put a lot of effort into the post, double checked the spelling and grammar, and have written one of your best articles – then you should stand a good chance of being accepted.

Why not give guest blogging a try, and write your first post for Social Media Soup? We are very lenient on what we will post, our only big concern is blatant links to your sites, 1-2 is fine but more than that is just a spam attempt and will actually be edited. Aside from that we will not condone using non-unique content. Content that is posted elsewhere on the internet is not ok to post as a guest post. Google will slap us, and will slap any website that is being linked to. It’s just not worth it.

Additional consideration: Consider this, you spend 90% of your time writing guest posts, and hire guest bloggers to source your blog. This way what goes around comes around. Bloggers with less clout than you get their post in front of fresh eyes. You get to spend your time building your brand by an exponential amount by posting blogs that have more clout than yours. It’s the perfect way to piggyback off one blog’s success to catapult yours – and it really works!

One last word of advice if you do get a guest post out there – promote it heavier than you would for your own site. Let all your friends know about it and ask them to digg / stumble / share it. You will be amazed what this does for your traffic and google ranking.

Sheesh, hope they don’t do that, I’ve written plenty of anti-apple blog posts, I might end up in the electric chair, or some concentration camp. Definitely agree that people who buy from Steve Jobs are almost like cult followers – blinded by an inferior product, that’s closed, hinders progress, over-priced, over-hyped, and many can’t even do what a cheap netbook or laptop can do… (Multitasking).. of course that may be fixed soon, but multitasking is something computers have had for a decade, shouldn’t be some big new thing – unless of course your company is still living in 1984 which…well like the book is precisely where Apple lives.

Ok this is pretty big. This guy’s feedreader and twitter count says he’s got 5k rss readers, and about the same twitter followers.

I’ve actually subscribed to this guys blog for awhile now – something I plan on remedying today. Consider me unsubscribed.

Apparently Mike Sansone was arrested at a gathering of bloggers Friday morning, and was charged with 3rd-degree harassment for allegedly sending an improper text message.

Now police say that Michael Sansone, 48 has been warned about contacting the woman, and that it was apparently the latest in a string of similar contacts made to various female business associates and acquaintances of the blogger / social media consultant.

The original article is a little vague, the victim is so far un-named – but it does state that this isn’t the first such text message, and that there have been many more allegations of similar misconduct by other women, of Sansone mis-using social media.

According to the Desmoines Register:

“Sansone, whose electronic outlets include www.converstations.com, refers to himself on that website as a “conversation conductor” and a “social mediatician.” He has been named one of the 100 Smartest People in Social Media by the company Smarter Social Media.

Court records show Sansone lost a house to foreclosure in May 2009. He was sued in small claims court three weeks ago by a Clive townhome association seeking unpaid dues.”

After reading this I would like to ask two things:

FIRST:  I’d ask “Smarter Social Media” to reconsider their 100 smartest social media consultants (heck why not put me on the list in his spot?).

Second:  How smart can he be at social media if his house was foreclosed on in 2009? Apparently he’s just a broken man, who’s nothing but a faker, and a sexual deviant, how can you ‘get social media‘ when you can’t even read social signals from members of the opposite sex.

I know my wife would kill me if I did this, and I’d strangle her and blame the cat if she did.

According to a Mashable post, 10% – that’s 1 in 10 people under age 25 think it’s perfectly ok to text while having sex. I’m going to bet that these 10% are also the ones who would text during a funeral, wedding, while crossing the street, or driving a car.

Further 6% over the age of 25 think that texting while having sex is ok.

“A recent survey by consumer electronics shopping and review site Retrevo uncovered the disturbing statistic along with a few other generation gap metrics, including under 25s being far more likely to think it’s okay to text during meals or while in the bathroom.” -mashable.

With the proliferation of mobile phones, and smartphones full of applications it makes sense that more and more of our ‘private time will be devoted to our online lives, but is texting during sex a little too much, too soon? Or do you think that it’s perfectly normal and ok?
