I don't know about you, but I USE TO envy Blackberry owners because I thought they had something that I didn't have with my Samsung Code.

That something is called push email.

For those that don't know what push email is, it's a term used to describe e-mail systems that provide an "always-on" capability in which new e-mails are instantly and actively transferred as they arrive in your inbox.

As some of you have already learned, the Samsung Code has push email capabilities too and this isn't limited to Exchange Server based email either (to learn how to configure your Samsung Code to receive Exchange Server based email, check out Connect Your Samsung Code To Any Exchange Server You Want for further details).

You have already learned how to configure your smartphone to receive push email from any Exchange Server, now I'm going to teach you how to transform your Gmail inbox from this:

To this...

Follow these instructions to configure your Samsung Code to "push" your Gmail to your smartphone:

1. Press the Left Soft Key to select Start -> ActiveSync.

2. Press the Right Soft Key to select Menu and highlight Add Server Source.

3. Enter your Gmail E-Mail Address in the Email address text box.

4. Remove the check from the Attempt to detect Exchange Server settings automatically check box and press your Right Soft Key to select Next.

5. Enter m.google.com in the Server address text box.

6. Make sure the check in the This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection check box is active and then press the Right Soft Key to select Next.

7. Enter your Gmail email address in the User name text box.

8. Enter your Gmail email account password in the Password text box and then press the Right Soft Key to select Next.

9. Remove the check marks from the Contacts/Calender/Tasks check boxes by pressing either the OK Key or Space Bar.

10. With the Email check box active, press the Left Soft Key to select Finish.

At this point, your Samsung Code will go through the process of synchronizing with your Gmail Inbox for the first time.

To verify that your new Gmail Push Email account is set up properly, press Home Key and then the Left Soft Key to select Start -> Messaging. You will notice that you have new Outlook Email account that looks like this:

If you use the TimeSaver's Interface, a new Outlook Email icon will appear on the TimeSaver's Communications Interface like this:

So how fast is "always on" push Gmail?

Timesaver's Tip: Only See What You Want To See Even If You Have Hundreds Of Messages

Ever want to find something specific in either a text message or email, but gave up because you didn't want to waste your time looking through all of your old and new messages?

If so, you are going to love this Timesaver's Tip that I call SmarterSearch.

Some of you are probably aware of the SmartSearch application on your smartphone (Start -> Accessories -> SmartSearch), but the SmarterSearch trick makes it just look plain dumb in comparison.

Now you can search either a text message or an email message using keyword search (and without the need to open any other applications to do it) with SmarterSearch.

Using SmarterSearch To Find What You Want

1. Go to the Email Folder you want to search by pressing the Left Soft Key to select Start -> Messaging.

2. Press the Left Soft Key to chose Select (or press the OK Key) to open up the Email Folder you want to search.

3. Using your keypad, begin typing the keyword you want SmarterSearch to find and you will notice the following:

- The name of your email folder will be replaced with the word "Matches" (look at the top left part of your screen)
- The keyword will appear next to Matches as you type it and it will look like this:

- SmarterSearch filters all of the emails that don't contain the keyword you are searching for and only presents you with the emails that contain the keyword you are looking for.
- SmarterSearch will highlight your keyword so that you can find what you are looking for quickly.

You can use SmarterSearch to conduct keyword searches in your text messages by following the same instructions.

IV. Adjusting The Back Light Timing

1. Press the Left Soft Key to select Start -> Settings -> Power Management.

2. Scroll to the Backlight time out click thru menu and change the settings from Never (or whatever you have it set to) to 5 or 10 seconds.

3. Press the Left Soft Key to select Done.

V. Adjusting The Display Time Out

1. Press the Left Soft Key to select Start -> Settings -> Power Management.

2. Scroll to the Display time out on Battery click thru menu and change settings to 10-15 seconds.

m.Tip: Do You Want To Improve Your Battery Life?

I decided to take a deeper dive in this article then I originally did [see m.Tip: The Six Things You Can Do Right Now To Improve Your Battery Life (Without Buying Or Installing A Thing) for further details] and provide specific instructions on how to extend the battery life of your Samsung Code.

I. Shut off Bluetooth when you aren't using it.

1. Press and hold the Lock Key to access the Quick List menu.

2. Scroll to the Wireless Manager and hit the Left Soft Key to choose Select.

3. If Bluetooth is ON, it will look like this:

4. To shut off Bluetooth, scroll to Bluetooth and press the OK Key.

II. Shut down your Bluetooth Receptivity when not in use.

1. Hit the Left Soft Key to select to Start -> Settings -> Connections.

2. Click the 2 Key to select Bluetooth.

3. Click the 3 Key to select Incoming Beam Setting.

4. Remove the check icon from the Receive incoming beams check box by pressing the OK Key.

5. Hit the Left Soft Key to select Save which will bring you back to the Bluetooth Setting Master Menu.

6. Press the 7 Key to select More.

7. Press the 1 Key to select Discoverable Mode Setting.

8. Change the default settings from Always to either a 1 min, 3 min or 5 min interval by clicking the Navigation Button/Jog Wheel to the right (3 o'clock position).

9. Press the Left Soft Key to select Save.

III. Change Email Synchronization Settings.

1. Press the Left Soft Key to select Start -> Messaging.

2. With the email account you want to change highlighted, press the Right Soft Key to select Menu and then press the 1 Key (or the OK Key) to select Settings.

3. Highlight Send/Receive Schedule and press the OK Key to select.

4. Change the Automatic Send/Receive settings to either Manually or 2 Hours or more.

5. Press the Left Soft Key to select Done.

How To Delete An Email Account From Your Smart Phone

1. Hit your Left Soft Key to select Start -> Messaging.
2. Highlight the email account you wish to delete and hit the Right Soft Key to select Menu -> Delete.

3. Hit the OK Key or the 2 Key to select Delete.
4. Hit the Left Soft Key to select Yes to confirm that you want to delete this email account and its contents.

The latest in the Memory Saver Series (See What You Should Always Do When Downloading & Installing Applications On Your Samsung Code, How To Install Applications To Your SD Card Instead Of Your Smartphone's Memory, Want To Free Up Memory By Putting Your Ringtones On Your SD Card? and Have Your Samsung Code Store All Of Your Pics And Vids On Your SD Card Automatically to get other ideas about how you to recover your smartphone's on-board memory back), here's a tip that could help you regain a meaningful chunk of memory back (particularly if you haven't done it yet).

The "closet" that I suggest needs some cleaning is your favorite browser's cache folder and page view history. With this said, here are instructions on how to clear your history and cache on three of the more popular mobile web browsers (IE, Opera and Skyfire).

Internet Explorer House Cleaning

1. Open IE (Go to Start -> Internet -> Internet Explorer)

2. Hit your Right Soft Key to select Menu, then go to Tools -> Options until the following screen appears:

3. With Temporary Files highlighted, hit the Right Soft Key to Select Clear.

4. Hit the Left Soft Key to select Yes to confirm that you want delete all the temporary Internet Explorer files.

5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 to delete the Cookies and History folders.

Opera House Cleaning

1. Open your Opera browser.

2. Hit your Left Soft Key to select Menu -> Tools -> History.

3. Hit your Left Soft Key to select Clear.

4. Hit your Left Soft Key to select Yes.

5. To clear cookies, hit your Left Soft Key to select Menu -> Tools -> Settings.

6. Scroll to the bottom of the page and highlight Clear Cookies and then hit your OK Key to select.

7. Hit your Left Soft Key to select Yes to delete your cookies.

Skyfire House Cleaning

1. Open your Skyfire browser.

2. Hit you Right Soft Key to select Menu -> Settings.

3. Use your Navigation Button/Jog Wheel to scroll and select Advanced Options (you'll know when it is selected because it will change from blue to red).

4. Use your Navigation Button/Jog Wheel to hover the pointer over the Clear Cookies button and hit the OK Key to delete cookies (a pop up window will appear telling you that you were successful).

5. Hover the pointer over the Clear History button and hit the OK Key to delete history.

How much memory did you recover?

m.Tip: How To Have Security Without Needing To Remember Anything

But a password...

I recently wrote about how Samsung Code owners could take measures to evoke certain security measures to prevent loss, theft or privacy invasion (see Protect Your Mobile Ass...ets for further details), but none of this matters if you just "forget about it".

If this sounds like you, then there is something you can do that would allow you to "set it and forget it" and this feature is called the Automatic Device Lock.

This feature allows you to set your Samsung Code to automatically lock itself (at a time interval that you predetermine) and allows you to take extra measures to minimize the "hackability" of your smartphone in the event of loss or theft.

Although I did mention this feature in my previous article (See Precaution #3 for further details), I think a "deeper dive" is in order (if for nothing else, to stress to the few the importance of setting up some sort of line of defense for your smartphone).

Follow these steps to set up your first line of defense against theft and loss and "set it and forget it":

1. Find the Device Lock Feature (Go to Start -> Settings -> Security -> Device Lock).

2. Check the Prompt if device is unused for check box.

3. Select a inactivity time limit (how long your smartphone will be inactive before the Device Lock feature is activated) by using the Jog Wheel/Navigation Button (you can choose from 1 Minute to 24 Hours).

If you want to scroll your options quicker without using the Jog Wheel/Navigation Button, simply hit the OK Key to access this scroll down menu:

4. Select the Password Type you would like to use (you can choose from Simple Pin [numeric password] or Strong alphanumeric [a password with both numbers and letters]).

Use the OK Key for quicker access to your options:

5. Enter your choosen Password (when you type your password, you will be able to see the letters/numbers for only a moment, then your password with be converted to protected status [*******]).

6. Confirm your Password.

7. Hit your Left Soft Key to select Done to save Device Lock setup setting.

8. Hit your Left Soft Key to select Yes to save the password settings.

9. If you chose to use the "strong alphanumberic" password type, your password must contain a minimum of 7 characters and contain at least three of the following character types:

- Uppercase Letters
- Lowercase Letters
- Numerals
- Punctuation

10. Once your Samsung Code reaches your preset inactivity time limit, your homescreen will look like this:

11. To gain access to your smartphone, hit your Left Soft Key to select Unlock and then you will be prompted to enter your password.

That's how you create and use security access with your Samsung Code.

What if you are in a "safe place" (home, friend's house, etc.) and don't need the added security?

Deactiviting the Automatic Device Lock is easy (but not so easy for outsiders that don't know the "magic word" [the password]) if you follow these steps:

1. Go back to the Device Lock Feature (Go to Start -> Settings -> Security -> Device Lock).

2. Once you click on Device Lock, you will be prompted to enter your password to access the screen and make any changes (this is how we keep the "undesirables" out).

3. Remove the check from the Prompt if device is unused for check box and hit your Left Soft Key to select Done.

4. Confirm that you want to make these changes by hitting the Left Soft Key and selecting Yes.

Security system deactivated...

If you are saying to yourself, "This sounds great and all, but I don't want to miss anything if I do this", then don't fret. You can still receive and make (if the number is on your Emergency List) calls even if your Samsung Code is locked.

m.Live Wassup Map Project: Should You Really Care?

- The verifiable Kbps speed (See Do You Know How Fast You Are for further details) in the area.

The rest of the markers that I put on the m.Live Wassup Map will bear a similar format from now on.

What's NOT important is where I or anyone else lives (don't enter your real home address please) or works (same goes here), it's measuring how the Metro PCS service really works by capturing to relative bits of information, signal strength and transfer speed.

The (samsung) Code of Metro PCS turned 3 months old yesterday. Only an infant in many respects, this site has seen its share of both growing pains and growth spurts.

Here is some statistical ramblings and factoids that you might find of interest:

- If you visited this site, you were one of 3,045 other visitors that did in the last 3 months.
- Out of the 3,045 visitors that have visited, 1,508 of you come back more then once (THANK YOU).
- If you visited this site, you are either from the United States, India, Canada, Russia, Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, Philippines, Mexico, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Indonesia, Argentina, Malaysia, Poland, France, Turkey, Singapore, South Korea, Czech Republic, Japan or Peru (listed from most to least).

The bottom line?

TimeSaver's Tip: When Being A Zero Can Help You When Calling Internationally

As a result of living and working both in Southeast Asia and Northern Europe, I have a lot of "connections" around the world that I want to stay in touch with.

I was an early adopter of Skype and that was my de facto method of staying in touch with my vendors, colleagues and friends.

I nearly leaked myself when Metro PCS came out with their 5/Month Unlimited International Program plan option and I could call my "connections" anytime I wanted, for as long as I wanted, without being bound to my laptop or PC.

For those that also have the plan extension, you know that dialing "011" can be replaced with "+" character, but do you add "+" sign by using Fn + Y keys?

If you do, you are really going to appreciate this timesaver.

From anywhere on the home screen (you can be in the dialer too), press and hold the 0 key for 3 seconds. First the dialer will open and a 0 will appear, but before the end of the 3 seconds, the 0 will covert to a + sign.

m.Tip: Did You Know You Can Get Emails From Any Exchange Server You Want?

Just like with Google, MSN, AOL, etc., your Samsung Code can receive direct push email from any Exchange Server you have access to (this is most often the case when someone tries to access work based email communications).

Although in most cases, the IT Department would set up your Exchange Email Account on your Smartphone, I can show you how you can become your own Exchange Server Network Administrator (if you have the server information and other settings necessary to set up your account).

1. Press the Left Soft Key to select Start -> ActiveSync.

2. Press the Right Soft Key to select Menu and highlight Add Server Source.

3. Enter your Exchange Server E-Mail Address in the Email address text box and hit your Right Soft Key to select Next.

4. Enter your Exchange Mail Server Address in the Server address text box (this would be the same server address you use for Outlook Web Access) and hit your Right Soft Key to select Next.

5. Enter the Exchange Server User Password and Exchange Server Domain Name in the provided text boxes and hit your Right Soft Key to select Next.

6. Now your Samsung Code can synchronize Email, Contacts, Calender and Tasks wirelessly with the approved Exchange Server.

7. While highlighting Email from the scroll down menu, hit your Right Soft Key to select Menu.

8. If you select Settings from the drop down menu, you can change the message format, limit the size of downloads, determine synchronization frequency and more.

9. If you select Advanced from the drop down menu, you can change conflict resolution settings, event logging and more.

This article is for those that might have maxed out the capacity of The Ultimate Command Center (a customizable system that allows you to automate all your repetitive tasks---check out Learn How To Create Any Shortcut You Want for further details).

Working with Speed Dial isn't restricted to putting your friends, family and co-workers on the "short list", you can add anything you have on your Start Menu to the Speed Dial Directory.

Adding anything located on your Start Menu is as easy as:

1. Hit the Left Soft Key to select Start.
2. Scroll the Jog Wheel/Navigation Wheel until you have highlighted the folder you are interested in adding to the Speed Dial Directory.

3. Hit the Right Soft Key to select Menu and press 1 (or the OK Key) to select Add Speed Dial.

4. Type what you want to name the shortcut in the Name Text Box.

5. Select the keypad/number selection you want to assign to your new shortcut. Use the Jog Wheel/Navigation Button to scroll through your options (our use the OK Key to see all of your options on one screen).

6. Hit the Left Soft Key to select Done.
7. To verify that your new shortcut has been added to the Speed Dial Directory, go to Start -> Accessories -> Speed Dial.

The Situation (no, not the one from Jersey Shore): You didn't purchase insurance when you bought your Samsung Code.
The Problem: You just lost your smartphone.

This would suck on so many different levels---coming up with the money to pay for another Smartphone, your privacy potentially being compromised and spending the time and money to reinstall/replace the applications you installed on your Samsung Code to name just a few of the headaches that beset anyone that has lost their smartphone.

Even if you haven't invested in the insurance coverage for your smartphone, there are precautions you can take to "protect your mobile ass...ets".

Follow these steps to increase your smartphone's chances of being found when it's lost (and increase the protection against "mobile privacy invasion"):

- PRECAUTION #1-Back up your data before leaving your house or office: With a service like Microsoft's MyPhone, you can have a back up of your Contacts, Calender, Tasks, Text Messages (SMS), Favorites, Videos, Music and Documents in seconds ensuring that you can restore all of this data if all of the following precautions should fail (don't bank on using the Ring Phone, Find Phone, Lock Phone or Erase Phone features of My Phone to help you out because Metro PCS currently isn't a recognized MyPhone Operator).
- PRECAUTION #2-Back up "everything else" if you can: Applications/Services like SPB Back and Sprite allow you to take a virtual snapshot of EVERYTHING on your Samsung Code and converts it to a executable file (.exe file) that you can tuck away for safe keeping just in case none of the other precautions work. Even though you'll need to pay for these apps/services, restoring all of your original settings in moments will save you both time and money in the end (this will also prove to be priceless for these that intend to make registry changes).
- PRECAUTION #3-Lock your smartphone when you aren't using it: You can restrict access to your Smartphone with anyone that doesn't know your password by using the Device Lock feature. You can activate this feature by following these simple steps:

1. Find the Device Lock Feature (Go to Start -> Settings -> Security -> Device Lock).

2. Check the Prompt if device is unused for check box.

3. Select a inactivity time limit (how long your smartphone will be inactive before the Device Lock feature is activated) by using the Jog Wheel/Navigation Button (you can choose from 1 Minute to 24 Hours).

4. Select the Password Type you would like to use (you can choose from Simple Pin [numeric password] or Strong alphanumeric [a password with both numbers and letters]).

5. Enter your choosen Password (when you type your password, you will be able to see the letters/numbers for only a moment, then your password with be converted to protected status [*******]).

6. Confirm your Password.

7. Hit your Left Soft Key to select Done to save Device Lock setup settings.

- PRECAUTION #4-Put your SIM card on lockdown too: By using Encryption function, you can prevent anyone from viewing/reading/copying the files on your SD card on anything other then your Samsung Code (and with Device Lock activated, no one will be able to).

You can activate this feature by following these simple steps:

1. Find the Device Lock Feature (Go to Start -> Settings -> Security -> Encryption).

2. Check the Encrypt files when placed on storage cards check box.

3. Hit the Left Soft Key to select Done to save settings.

- PRECAUTION #5-Make it easy for someone to "pay it forward" with on of the world's largest FREE lost and found departments: Up to know, we have backed up everything (or at least our data) and set up "Fort Knox" like barriers to entry to your Smartphone and its data, now we need to focus on the "found" equation (or getting found when your smartphone is lost).

Do you believe that mankind is made up of mostly good and honest people? Services like TigerTag allow you take advantage of the "Power of Goodwill". The premise of the service is simply enough---put a tag with a unique ID and toll free number on your Smartphone and when you lose it, the Good Samaritan can either call or go on the web to get your property back to you.

The service claims to have a 75% return rate and the service is FREE to use and FREE to the Good Samaritan.

- PRECAUTION #6-Appeal to someone else's greed with the world's biggest PAID lost and found department: Like TigerTag, StuffBak hopes there is good in everyone, but just in case your smartphone happens to be found by a "bad apple", it offers an reward (and you can add your own reward to the mix to increase the bounty) to inspire the finder to "do the right thing".

Again like TigerTag, StuffBak claims a 75% return rate and even though the service costs a little money (less then five bucks), the reward feature of StuffBak's service does have a positive impact on improving the return rate (which means the odds that your smartphone will be "found" are higher then it remaining "lost").

We all remember learning about Benjamen Franklin in school and almost everyone remembers one of his most famous quotes, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".

I strongly suggest that this principle certainly applies in this case...
