Last Fall I spent some time in Cognac doing a series of photo shoots for Hennessy.
The images in this post are of the Cognac grape harvest shot at vineyards and distilleries as well as the homes of Guillaume and Frederic, two of the independent growers that sell their grapes to Hennessy.

Chez Panisse turned 40 this year, and to mark this anniversary they organized a series of dinners around the bay area. The dinners helped raise money for the Edible Schoolyard.
I stopped by the edible schoolyard in Berkeley and then went to 14 of the dinners to cover the event for T Magazine. Below are some of my favorite photos from the weekend.

The idea behind the shoots was to make a series of photos of stylish Bay Area guys living the dream and doing what they love.

June 8th The Selby Limited Edition Book Release Party and Cobra Shop Launch in Los Angeles

A special ultra limited edition of The Selby Is In Your Place Book will be available for purchase at the event and will only be sold at the Cobra Shop.
This limited edition The Selby Book will include 3 new exclusive chapters of photos of The Cobrasnake, The Grandmasnake and The Grandpasnake in their homes and will come with a special tote bag, poster and stickers.

I recently worked on a really fun project for Cole Haan. They asked me to cast, photograph and interview a group of people that I found inspiring for the Spring Summer 2010
ad campaign and for a special microsite called "The Inspired Life".

James Bond started the store Undefeated which is one of the most progressive and interesting stores in LA.
Jonny Knapp had a really great pop up store called the Corner Store Cooperative in Bellport New York.
Nicola Vassel is the gallery director of Deitch Projects.
Maria Sharapova is a tennis champion who is also very good at badminton.
Harley Viera-Newton is my favorite dj who can read hieroglyphics in the whole world.
Jon Manheim and Akiko Stehrenberger are old school friends of mine who are both amazing art directors.
Fun fact, Akiko designed the first The Selby logo.
Magda Wosinska is a super fun musician and photographer who happens to have a scale model of stonehenge in her front yard and a Shaggin Wagon.
Moses Berkson is a super talented photographer and all around nice guy.

the whole process by which the cacao beans are roasted, ground up, processed, aged, tempered and packaged.
There is a dedication to purity and an intensity of flavor in their chocolate which is very unusual.

One of the things that really drew me to Il Buco was the design of the space. It's really organic and natural, not too slick or overly thought-out. The space is just really dark and cozy,
all warm brick and dark wooden furniture. Everything is very rustic, in a charming way.

My favorite part of the restaurant is the chandeliers, which are made out of pots and pans and teapots and other kitchen items. It's so simple, but it's perfect for the restaurant.

Il Buco is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. The space started out as an antique shop in the '90s and at one point they just decided to start serving food, so the space still has all the quirky reminders of its past.
The design is really organic and natural, it's not slick or overly thought-out. I think the chef, Ignacio Mattos, is doing something really interesting and creative with Italian food, taking its traditions and customs

The chefs in the kitchen at Il Buco have to work all day to get everything prepared for lunch and dinner. The make the pasta fresh every day and start early to make sure they bake enough bread for the customers.
Ela Schmidt is the pastry chef at Il Buco. She starts work every morning at seven to prep for the day. My favorite of her desserts is the panna cotta. It's so luscious and decadent. Ignacio was kind enough to share her recipe with me.

Il Buco Part 1 of 3: Shopping for Produce at the NYC Union Square Market with Chef Ignacio Mattos

This shoot is a little bit of a departure for me. I wanted to find new kinds of ways to apply my the concept of The Selby outside of peoples homes, and I thought a chef at a very unique restaurant would be a good way to start. Il Buco is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. Ignacio Mattos, the chef at Il Buco, has been working with a lot of local farmers for years. I thought it would be interesting to follow him around at the Union Square Greenmarket one day while he shopped for supplies. I shot in December, so there wasn't quite as much variety as there would have been at other times of the year, but it was great to see Ignacio talk with all of the suppliers and discuss his thoughts on the day's menu.

Martin and his sons Tod and Jay have a wonderful hand-tailored, union-run garment factory in Brooklyn. They make their own custom
suits as well as suits for many of my favorite American designers. Martin started working at the company as a floor boy in 1947 and
worked his way up to the top. He is a super styling dapper gentleman, a testament to the American dream and a true inspiration.

I have known Dan for a few years, he is a super nice guy and a great photographer. I especially like the photos he has done of Erin Wasson and of his girlfriend Shannan. Shannan is also really sweet and a very talented artist, I got some photos of her doing a painting on her front porch. I went by Dan and Shannan's new country house a few months ago and I really loved the vibe of their home. They have big barn that he uses as a studio, and another barn which is for guests to sleep in and acts as a big party / dining area in addition to their main house. Something I discovered on this shoot is that Dan is a great cook. He made us a really nice butternut squash soup for lunch and sent me home with a jar of home made pickles. Thanks for the hospitality guys.

Here are some of my favorite images from the work I have been doing for Nike 6.0 the past few months. I traveled to Tahiti, Georgia, Florida, NJ and Brooklyn to shoot some of Nike 6.0's top athletes in their environments. My photos, watercolor paintings, videos and written question and answers are being used on Nike 6.0's ad campaign as well as on the Nike 6.0 website. This project has been so much fun to work on! This gallery includes photos that I did of NYC entrepreneurs in collaboration with Cole Rood & Haan. All of the people shot for this project run businesses that have to do with taking old things and making them new again in interesting ways. This concept also seemed like a timely idea as there is a lot of DIY spirit in NYC these days.

The Smile is my favorite place to hang out and grab lunch and Carlos, Melia and Matt are great so it was natural to think of them for this shoot. Maryam and Uday's store Maryam Nassir Zadeh is really something special, I love the mix of vintage and hand crafted items that they sell there. Also it is really inspiring to see how they put everything together, if you have ever been to their store you know what I mean. Black Sheep and Prodigal Sons is a great line of jewelry, accessories and objects made by Derrick R. Cruz who has been featured before on the site. Jack's Coffee on 10th street is a great place to get a coffee when you are on the west side, also Jack is basically the mayor of west 10th street.

Everyday Life Objects Shop was a pop up store that I stopped by in Milan during the big furniture fair. Apartamento Magazine and Reference Library put it together and it was open just for the week of the fair. The store had items that had been featured in Apartamento as well as a lot of amazing stuff that Andy from Reference Library had found. It was very DIY and really heartfelt, I hope they make this an ongoing thing. The big colorful forms hanging from the ceiling are one of a kind hot air balloons that I particularly liked.

The Selby Paris book is being produced for colette and will be released April 2009 at the opening of The Selby Paris show.
It includes watercolor paintings and photographs of all the people that were photographed in Paris for the show, many of which have not been seen on The Selby website.
This book was printed in New York City and is limited to 250 copies, of which only 25 will be sold on The Selby Store. The spines of each book are hand painted red white and blue. All the books are signed and numbered by The Selby.
