Here’s an alternative. Surprisingly powerful and stunningly lightweight, Black & Decker’s 3.6-Volt Cordless Screwdriver features the best energy-to-weight ratio and longest-lasting charge available. Just the right weight and style for assembling furniture, hanging curtains, and mounting light fixtures, this tool is powered by a lithium-ion battery that holds a charge up to 18 months longer than comparable nickel-cadmium-powered drivers.

A very forgiving power screwdriver for those who hate cords but frequently forget to recharge, the lithium-ion battery also helps this tool deliver 20 percent more power than Ni-Cad tools. When it is time for a recharge, a fixed, internal battery lets you just drop the whole tool into the included charging base, rather than detaching it from the tool and attaching it to the charger, a process that sometimes takes longer than driving the darn screw. Half the size of most screwdrivers in its class, this tool is great for working in tight quarters and around tough corners.

Powerful and durable enough for years of household use, the tool’s pistol grip makes overhead driving a much more comfortable task than you’ll experience with in-line drivers that require an uncomfortably bent elbow that shortens reach. And, at just 2.6 pounds, there’s no more dying strain to finish extended overhead driving tasks. Not that there’ll be such a thing as extended applications. This driver spins screws at 180 rotations per minute and churns out 48-inch pounds of torque, easily rivaling most drill/drivers pound for pound, and definitely providing a welcome rest for the wrist. Best of all, Black and Decker’s Grab-N-Go charger mounts to walls for easy access. The purchase is covered by a 2-year manufacturer warranty.

The Compact Screwdriver's performance and unique design make it the perfect tool for any task in and around your home. The new Lithium Ion battery technology helps deliver 20% more power (torque) and won't loose charge for 18 months so the SMARTDRIVER is ready for use when you are. The compact size is half that of a regular rechargeable screwdriver and helps to get into tight spaces. The Grab-N-Go charger, which can also be mounted onto the wall, keeps the unit ready and easily accessible. A dual-function control lets you switch quickly and easily from rotation to hammer action, and a mounted depth gauge is a nice touch other makers ought to adopt. The auxiliary handle attaches easily and rotates a full 360 degrees to let you work at any angle. The keyed chuck accepts up to ½-inch bits, and at 5 pounds, it’s far from the heaviest drill of its caliber.

The soft grip and comfortable trigger with lock-on button further relieve hand strain. The case will withstand all kinds of jobsite abuse.

I used this Bosch hammer drill to make about 50- 3/8 inch diameter holes in a concrete floor slab, and 50 holes in brick and mortar, it worked great. The drill had a good amount of weight and power. I even used it to drill a 1" diameter hole (the bit fit a 1/2 in. diameter chuck) in a brick wall it was no problem after drilling a 3/8 in. pilot hole. I debated buying a lighter weight drill but would not recommend anything lighter for drilling in concrete.

I thought the case was great (unlike other reviews) and the depth gage seemed sufficient although I didn't use it. The one I have is a -factory reconditioned- but was totally new and never used. Bosch is high quality and I expect this drill to last for many years. I would also recommend the Bosch hammer drill bits instead of the yellow brand. I used both and the difference was clear, you get what you pay for. But it’s crowded at the top of the list: Despite their light weight, these nailers are heavyweights in the power department. The 7150-21 effortlessly drives 5/8" to 2-1/8" brads and, best of all, its reload indicator even alerts you when your magazine’s nearly empty. Loading more fasteners takes a couple of seconds at most, and that means more money in your pocket.

Another big tip of the hat to Milwaukee for incorporating both sequential and bump firing modes, accessible just by turning a knob, so when speed is a need, you’re ready to go, but precision is at your fingertips too. We like the quality built into this tool, from the magnesium housing and oil-free motor to the easily adjustable air deflector and muffler, as well as the convenient rafter hook for storage. The non-marring nosepiece won’t deface your work surface, and there’s even a self-cleaning air filter in the tool handle, keeping dust and dirt out of the tool’s workings – and that means longer tool life. In hand, this nailer feels great: light, comfortable, agile, beautifully balanced, and dare we say, fun to use. Tool-free depth adjustment is on-the-mark reliable, fast and easy. And should the nails jam, clearing is a snap with the tool-free jam release.

This brad nailer can be used to finish and trim (interior and exterior), decorative trim, book cases, baseboards, cabinets, case backs, drawers, molding, mirror and picture frames, paneling, shoe and base moldings, staircases, upholstery trim panels, wainscoting, window beading, chair rail, furniture frames, lattice strip molding, nailable plastic parts, crafts.

Technical details:

Operating Pressure: Min-70 PSI, Max-120 PSI

Air Consumption: .04 ft3/cycles at 100 psi

Fastener Length: Min. 0.625 in., Max. 2.125 in.; Fastener Size (Diameter): 18 gauge

Magazine Capacity: 106 nails

Collation Angle: 0º; Air Inlet: 1/4 in. It is powerful, well made, precision, and looks awesome. The assembly is straightforward and simple just a few heavy lifts. Everything was already factory calibrated and needed no adjustment. The cut was smooth as glass. The blades are extremely sharp and will turn red oak into a straight glassy surface with no problems. The motor sounds great, it's smooth and quite. The enormous hand wheels make adjusting everything on the machine smooth and easy.

Save your money and buy a well-made massive machine from Grizzly. The catalog picture was a little un- proportional to the size. It doesn't look so big in the picture yet is barely fits in my garage its so big. The extra weight and size kills all vibration as it easily passed the nickel test.

This joiner however has dispelled any of my angst. It came in two boxes that were totally intact. Everthing in the package was in great shape. I have the 6" powermatic 54a and this is everything that is in term of quality. Afterall, they are all made overseas so how different can a joiner be to ask $500-$600 more than what Grizzly is charging.

Some people just have to find fault with something I guess. You can't prewire the motor without the risk of the wire tearing out in transit. As far as adjusting pulley tension, it simply takes two people to do unless you are part monkey and can contort yourself to reach both sides of the nut while positioning the motor. Even the blades came honed from the factory, don't touch them or you will have a band aid as I do now. I showed the friend who helped me how to work it and he was duly impressed as well. I did not have to even change the outfeed table. Planed a really crooked piece of apple wood perfectly flat and very smooth.

Very happy overall, kudos to Grizzly for producing a great product at an incredible price point. First, it’s the quietest compressor we’ve ever encountered. It’s a remarkable departure in a genre of tools that normally force you to suspend conversation while it’s cycling. The MAC700 puts out 80 decibels, according to the folks at Makita, and when you compare that to the 90 and up you get from most units, that’s practically a hum. So we like this for household use, especially in a basement shop.

Next on our list of pluses for the DIY-er is the low-amp draw, and with that, fewer trips to the breaker box and less chance of premature motor failure. The other feature that won us over is the easy-on-the-hand lever handle ball valve that saves your knuckles when you drain the tank. It’s also got a really fast cycle, so by the time you take a sip of water, you’re ready to work again.

It’s made like a champ, with a roll-bar handle that protects your investment, a cast-iron cylinder for durability and an oil sight glass that makes maintenance a breeze.

The startup process is fairly simple. The manual doesn't explain what goes where when you open the box, but it's reasonably self-evident. There are two plastic plugs on the compressor that need to come out. One covers the oil filler, and one covers the air intake port. You replace the plug on the air intake port (topmost plug) with the included air filter, and you replace the oil filler plug with the included oil cap.

There's a window into the oil reservoir so you can see how much oil is in it. Before you run it for the first time, fill it (with the included oil) until the oil line is midway in the window. Then, open the air release valve at the very bottom of the air tank and run the compressor for 20 minutes. After that, you should be good to go. Check the oil level periodically, of course! View product description at Amazon.com.

All you need to do to get a perfect miter joint is to swing each of the two legs against your two work surfaces and read the angle indicated on the dial. That angle is what you set on your miter saw and you get a perfect miter joint, no matter what angle your work surfaces are.

It is completely foolproof. Couldn't be faster to use. And it will also read for fitting a single piece too. I'm sure I will also use it for layout and transferring. It is the perfect angle tool for a carpenter like myself. It measures angles like a tape measures length.

This tool is very nicely made aluminum. It has two matching 12" legs and a flush inset dial where the legs hinge at the ends. It operates smoothly and holds the reading without moving. It is very durable and obviously built for the jobsite. I love this tool, which simply and without reservation recommended. A light compressor for small jobs. It was between the Senco or purchasing a Paslode cordless. Having the pneumatics already, this was the better choice for me. The compressor works as expected, popping around 8 to 10 15 g nails before cycling. It won't replace a larger, dedicated compressor but works great for smaller jobs. It weighs about as much as my lunch box.

If you are like me and need a compressor for your home shop, this is the one to get. My old compressor was so loud that I would hesitate to use it. This will not drive a framing nailer but has worked just great for my 16ga finish gun and brad nailer to trim out a door and put down some shoe moulding. Light enough to pick up and move around the house with you, works well with one of those 25 ft coiled hoses. Not enough capacity to blow out your shop, but since it's so quiet I don't mind having it run more often. Well made solid tool and definitely worth buying.

A small compact compressor that's lightweight easy to handle. For small installation jobs. Now I don't have to lug around my large compressor for a few window or trim mouldings. The nailer is designed specifically for installing tongue-and-groove hardwood flooring with L-shaped flooring cleats and a thickness of 1/2 to 25/32 inch. The nailer works on 70-100 psi of compressed air and drives cleats with accuracy and force through even the toughest woods, but without damaging even the most delicate pre-finished floor.

A 45 degree angled head saves time and frustration. A mallet is included to help position flooring strips prior to nailing them into place. And a rear-load, gravity-fed magazine makes cleat loading fast and easy (though some issues with the last few cleats in the clip have been reported). The tool is solid and stable. Heavy-duty, die-cast construction ensures quality. It also gives the tool a little bulk, but it's still relatively easy to use and well worth the effort.

Install hardwood floorings with ease using this professional grade flooring cleat nailer. Because it uses cleats instead of nails or staples, this nailer fastens 3/4-inch hardwood floors securely while allowing the wood to expand and contract during seasonal temperature and humidity changes. This tool's pneumatic drives cleats to a consistent depth.

This is a professional tool and the quality shows. I haven't had to have it rebuilt or order parts. Clean it ocassionally and use oil and an air filter and forget about it. But that's not the only reason to step up to the 735. Its powerful 10,000 rpm motor will handle anything you feed it--oak, walnut, exotics--with absolute ease. The three-knife cutterhead will make 96 or 179 cuts per inch, depending on which speed setting you choose. Mess is minimized with the fan-assisted chip ejection, which literally vacuums chips off the cutter-head and blows them out the exhaust.

The 735's automatic carriage lock will save you from snipe by reducing the movement that causes it--what a great idea. We also love the redesigned thickness scale--it's big and super-visible, even in poor lighting. Those who do repetitive cuts will appreciate the turret depth-stop; set your most-used cuts to it once and you're always assured of accuracy. The home woodworker will be thrilled, and the professional's expectations will be more than met.

This planer is exceptional. The cut quality, thanks to 179 cuts/inch, is in a league of it's own. There aren't too many machines at any price that produce cuts this clean. I had a $5,000 jointer/planer that produced tearout on the same wood that this planer surfaces perfectly, due mostly to the lower 50 cuts/inch of my previous machine.

In a lot of ways, this portable is more refined than the industrial machines. The attention to detail is impressive for a machine of this price. It is not as heavy duty, and you can't take monster thick passes with it, but I'm not looking for production-shop efficiency- cut quality is where it's at for me. We took the famous 690 router first introduced in the late 1960s and did the impossible, improved it. Not only has the power been increased to 1-3/4 horsepower, but we added a dust sealed rocker switch, larger more ergonomic handles and a one hand operated lever release for locking the motor depth in place. This new lever is extremely useful for router table users and incorporates a motor "catch" that will not allow the motor to drop out of the base when loosened. The 1/2- and 1/4-inch self-releasing collets are a dream come true when bit changes are necessary and the 10-amp, all aluminum motor housing and base ensure cool running even with large diameter bits.

The biggest feature yet to be mentioned is the new electronic variable speed switch that allows you to fine tune the revolutions per minute from 10,000 rpm to 27,000 rpm. Now you can adjust the speed to match the size of the bit and the hardness of the wood to eliminate burning and chattering. Of course precise bit depth is easily achieved with the 1/64-inch micrometer ring that utilizes machined pins in the motor housing to ensure smooth, accurate adjustments every time.

With external brushes and a flat top to aid in bit changes, this U.S.A. engineered and manufactured machine is as good as it gets in routers. If you are serious about buying a router, do yourself a favor and buy this router today, you will never wish you had any other one. The shooter is built with a stacked design -- meaning the drill's interior parts stack on top of each other -- which makes replacing parts (like a switch) much easier to do as the whole drill doesn't need to be taken apart. The handle is designed so you can hold it two ways -- either pistol-grip or with the palm of your hand resting on the top back portion-- making the drill an extension of your arm.

As a result, you can really get behind it while still easily reaching the trigger with your fingers. And the finger slots add comfort. The shooter's top-quality chuck is a Jacobs (the best). It's a two-handed chuck, which, for the types of applications this drill is built for, is exactly what you want. The carbon brushes are also easy to access and change. One of our favorite new features on this tool is the long and superflexible Quick-Lok cord. If the cord gets cut or damaged, you simply unplug the damaged cord and replace it with the cord from any other Quick-Lok Milwaukee tool.

If you're looking for a serious, long-lasting drill, you can't go wrong here. Milwaukee's hole shooter is a very high-quality tool that will serve you for years and years and years. BK24214 30-Piece Signature Tool Kit: Everyone needs a basic tool set for projects like fixing leaks, hanging picture frames, or patching drywall. This fabulous 30-piece tool kit from Barbara K is designed specifically for women and is a great option for the average do-it-yourselfer. Whether you're searching for a gift or you're buying your first tool kit, Barbara K's package is ideal.

One problem women often have with standard tools is that they're too big and too heavy. Barbara K Enterprises is unique among tool companies because its products are made to suit women's ergonomic needs. For instance, the handles on most tools are slimmer than usual and many of the tools weigh less than comparable items from other manufacturers. In addition, Barbara K pliers have spring-loaded handles and the screwdrivers have special thumb rests. The philosophy is simple: Women shouldn’t be deterred from using tools just because the tools aren't user-friendly.

You might think that shrinking certain tools and putting extra moving parts on others would diminish quality. Wrong. The superior quality of the products is reason enough to buy them. These tools are built to last, and will stand to some serious abuse. Don’t be surprised if the tool snob in the house decides to start using these babies on a regular basis. Guys, these tools are good! Still, what makes them stand out is their ease of use.

For example, think for a second about how hard it is on your wrist and forearm to pound nails for an afternoon with a 16-ounce hammer. By reducing the weight of its hammer to 7 ounces and slimming down the handle, Barbara K has enabled you to swing harder and longer. If that doesn’t convince you, imagine this scenario: It’s December and your hose is frozen to the water spigot. You desperately need to get it off, but you just can’t squeeze the pliers for hard enough to force a good twist. Enter Barbara K's spring-loaded pliers.

With these, holding tight is a cakewalk!Another really cool thing about the set is the stylish blue plastic carrying case. We're impressed by the compact size and love how it helps you store your tools in an orderly fashion. No more rummaging through the closet or the shed! As long as you remember where you put your case, you're golden.

We thought it would have been nice if Barbara K included a bigger measuring tape. While 10-feet may be adequate for many small tasks, it’s not big enough to span the large rooms you find in many of today’s houses. We also would have been pumped if the kit came with a multitool of some sort. The company offers these, but they must be purchased separately. Despite these minor gripes, the Barbara K 30-Piece Signature Tool set is a top-notch package. When you factor in how much it would cost to buy each component separately, this price is a steal. Bosch's Top Handle Jigsaw now Features an exclusive Precision Control Blade System that provides unsurpassed cutting accuracy. A powerful, 6.4 amp, variable speed motor cranks out 500 to 2,800 strokes per minute for fast, smooth cuts. A One Touch Blade Change mechanism means less downtime and more productivity. The saw's Constant Response Circuitry keeps the blade moving at the desired speed for added control and consistent performance.

The saw also Features a wrench-less foot with tension adjustment for fast, easy bevel cutting, trigger-controlled variable speeds for matching the cutting speed to the job, a 4-position orbital action, and an adjustable blower. A soft grip handle means less operator fatigue, more comfort, and better control, and a padded overshoe prevents marring of the workpiece. Your purchase includes three blades, an anti-splinter insert, and a durable carrying case.

It’s a funny thing about jigsaws; most of us tend to reach for another tool in its stead, having had less-than-great experiences with the little beasts. But here comes Bosch’s 1590, and it elevates the outcast jigsaw to the most-wanted list.

The first thing we liked about this saw is its heft; it’s beefy, solid and made with that famous Swiss quality. You wrap your hand around the soft, substantial grip, squeeze the ample trigger and the soft-start whirs gently; with hardly any effort from you, the blade slices through whatever’s ahead of it. Perhaps because it’s heavier than most jigsaws, there’s practically zero vibration, giving you a delightfully smooth, no-buzz experience, something pretty much unheard of in your average jigsaw.

Another nice feature is the speed mechanism: Set your maximum speed on the trigger dial, then control your speed up to that max by squeezing the trigger. On long cuts, you can lock the trigger on, too, and the blower actually does keep your cutline clear.

If that’s all this saw had going for it, that would be enough for us. But coolest of all is the blade-change system that literally ejects the blade in a split second, takes the new one and gets you right back to your cutting – all tool-free. Amazing. If you’ve relegated the jigsaw to the bottom of your toolbox, you owe it to yourself to give this one a chance. We think it’s fantastic. That’s what this Porter-Cable random-orbit polisher promises – and delivers. The way it’s designed, most people will be able to control the tool with one hand, whether it’s being used as a polisher or as its original purpose, a random-orbit sander. For those with smaller hands or less hand strength, just attach the auxiliary handle for a superior grip. It’s easy to operate, easy to handle and easy on your body ergonomically.

We like that the speed dial is on the back of the body, where it’s less likely to get bumped and rev up at the wrong time. The speed range of 2,500 to 6,000 rpm is great for everything from polishing to waxing and buffing and, with the right attachments, sanding, too. It’s got a relatively wide orbital swing – more, we think, than most on the market – preventing swirl marks as you work, and vibration in hand is minimal.

Be aware that this polisher comes with just one polishing pad, and you’ll need more than that for any polishing/waxing job you undertake. If you are using this as a polisher, you’re likely going to be changing out and washing pads frequently, so we recommend picking up the hook-and-loop backer (Porter-Cable’s model number is 18001) and coordinating hook-and-loop pads. It will make your polishing life easier. The car collector, auto enthusiast and exacting hobbyist will love the finish this machine produces with virtually no effort. The nailer's small, 12-inch-long, lightweight body (6.9 pounds) is easy to hold and, because you're not dragging a hose, doesn't cause as much arm fatigue as other nailers. The nailer drives 2- to 3-1/4-inch nails and has easy-to-adjust drive depth and a high-visibility load magazine.

This Paslode nailer uses a patented system that requires both a fuel cell and an included rechargeable battery. Overall, we were impressed with the nailer's performance--it's consistent and there's adequate power for most uses. This model shoots up to 1,200 nails on a single fuel cell and up to 4,000 nails on a full battery charge. There's a convenient belt hanger so you don't have to lay the nailer on the ground or on top of a ladder or wedge it among rafters, and the high-visibility orange makes it difficult to misplace.

The kit includes a plastic carrying case, a lightweight charger, and safety goggles. DeWalt's 7.2-volt has the most powerful battery pack of any cordless screwdriver on the market, without sacrificing compact design. This screwdriver gets into all the tight spots cordless drills can't, and unlike other cordless screwdrivers, it won't leave you wishing for more power once there.

Its 80 inch-pounds of torque is beyond even the toughest competing model, and with 16 clutch settings, it's easy to avoid stripping out screws. We also like this tool's quick-change keyless chuck and the extra maneuverability provided by the two-position handle. This is a generous kit, including the driver, a charger, two batteries, two bits, and a tough case. Chain saws feature powerful motors for fast cutting and a sturdy, lightweight design that makes them exceptionally easy to use.

Take a big bite out of fallen trees, tree limbs and brush with the Alligator Lopper -- a revolutionary cutting tool that provides chainsaw-like cutting performance in an un-intimidating tool. With its scissor-like action, the Alligator Lopper’s rugged metal jaws clamp onto logs, thick branches, tree limbs, and vines -- and then saw right through them. Once limbs and branches are on the ground, the Alligator Lopper is perfect for chopping them up into manageable pieces to throw away or chuck into your fireplace.

This amazing saw boasts a rugged 4.5 amp motor for fast, powerful chomping through wood -- plus a heavy-duty cutting bar and chain to really chew through dense branches and logs. This model also features auto chain tensioning to keep the tool in top cutting form. Just loosen the bar retainer bolts with the included wrench and the bar automatically takes out the slack and adjusts the chain’s tension perfectly.

The Alligator Lopper’s jaws offer the ultimate in controlled cutting. The rugged metal guards that cover the jaws protect you from the cutting chain, and they immediately snap back over the blades once the cut is complete. The Alligator Lopper’s jaws also mean that there's no skipping around at the start of a cut. Unlike traditional chainsaws, the lopper cuts side-to-side instead of from top to bottom. This sideways cutting action prevents the cutting chain from burying itself in the dirt as the chain completes its cut.

The Alligator Lopper is ideal for tree pruning, clearing brush, storm clean-up, cutting firewood and more, and it’s a great alternative to chainsaws, manual loppers, handsaws and clippers. Mounted in a table, this unit can take even the place of an expensive shaper for many applications--it's that powerful. The soft start is surprisingly smooth, given the enormous heft of this machine. The design is smart, too. The motor is stationary as you raise and lower it, so the the power cord doesn't wrap around anything.

Better yet, everything can be adjusted from above your router table top. Milwaukee's exclusive linear height adjustment system gets you precise adjustments to within 1/8 of an inch and micro-fine adjustments to within 1/64 of an inch with the turn of a knob. When using the unit freehand, you’ll love the tilted handles, an innovation Milwaukee’s competitors should adopt. The slight angle gives you the superior control you need when using a router this powerful, all the way up to the max rpm of 22,000 rpm. Having the PC standard base for template work is nice. The T-handle wrench is good. The collet wrenches are beefy but raw metal. I wish they had some coating.

The collets seem fine. The soft start is essential in a router of this power as is the speed control. They are placed low which make the router very stable. I needed to control my depth of cut accurately to inset the router plate. The fine screw depth adjustment was excellent! With one button I could slide the base off to change guides. It was just as easy reinstalling the base over the motor. Run down time when you shut off the unit was acceptable. There was plenty of power to cut through this 1.5" MDF. I can't wait to try some raised panel bits. Overall the router seem excellent to use & well built. Be carefull if you mount it in a table...one push of a button can send your motor to the floor. I am building a movable stop under my table to prevent an accidental drop. One of the things we like best about this sander is that it doesn’t want you to exert any effort – you get the best results letting the sander do the work.
