R. Scot Herman, 68, of Millcreek, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 15, 2026. His passing was unexpected.

Born December 7, 1957, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Erie, Scot was the son of the late Richard and Ruth (Smith) Herman. A lifelong resident of the Erie area, he graduated from McDowell High School in 1975 and earned his degree in Criminal Justice from Penn State University in 1980. While at Penn State, he served as President of the Omega Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity.

Scot served the community through a distinguished career in law enforcement. He began with Penn State University Police and Public Safety before returning home to join the Millcreek Township Police Department, where he served for 36 years and retired as a Sergeant. After retirement, Scot went to work as Armed Security for Erie Events. He was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police.

Outside of his career, Scot enjoyed fishing, following local sports, and was a loyal Penn State Football season ticket holder. He also faithfully followed the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians. Some of his happiest moments were spent with family, particularly on fishing charters, in Naples, Florida. He was a proud supporter of his sons' activities and spent many years involved with the McDowell Football Boosters. He was a member of St. George Church.

Scot was also known for his passion for dogs and his dedication, alongside his wife, to breeding and showing them. Through Water's Edge Leonbergers, they raised Leonberger dogs. He also maintained a longtime appreciation for German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers.

He is survived by his wife, Susan R. Herman; his sons, Cory Michael Herman, Jeremy Herman (Danielle), and Joshua Herman (McKenna); his siblings, Richele Herman, Robin Herman, and Rhett Herman (Debra); his aunts, Anne Torrelli and Liz Herman; his mother-in-law Jean Jackson; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to gather at Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd., Erie, on Saturday, March 21, 2026, from 2:30 to 6:00 PM, with a service to follow at 6:00 PM. We’re proud to share that meaningful work has already been done to strengthen the foundation, update key systems, and address long-term needs.

Infrastructure Improvements

The Borough Township replaced the sewer line leading to the house after tree roots compromised the original pipe. This was a significant project that protects the long-term integrity of the property and prevents future issues underground. Luckily the Borough was able to do the repairs ll in one day.

The Borough also removed a large tree along the side of the house after it had died. While we always appreciate the character mature trees bring to the property, safety comes first, and this proactive removal protects both the structure and the surrounding grounds. Since this was on the grass area between the road and the sidewalk it was the Boroughs responsibility.

Repairs and System Updates

Inside the house, a leak in the basement bathroom was repaired, along with a separate leak in the first-floor bathroom. Addressing these promptly helps prevent larger structural concerns and keeps the facilities in good working order.

We also completed necessary boiler repairs to ensure the heating system continues to run efficiently and reliably.

Perhaps most importantly, the fire alarm system was fully replaced. The original system had become outdated, and the new system brings the house up to modern safety standards. This upgrade enhances protection for our undergraduate brothers and the property itself.

Looking Ahead

As any century-old home requires, continued care and attention are part of preserving what so many of us value. These projects are not just repairs. They are investments in the longevity, safety, and future of the Chapter House.

We’re grateful for the continued support of our alumni brothers, which makes this stewardship possible. Because of that support, the house remains strong, secure, and ready for the next generation to build their own memories within its walls.

Omega Chapter House Updates: Investing in the Next 100 Years

Chapter Eternal - Fieni ‘52, Barron '60 & Wells '68

We have been honored to call these men our Brothers.
Alexis Barron, Esq., 87, of Philadelphia and Lake Waynewood, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2025, at Honesdale Memorial Hospital, PA, surrounded by family.

Born in Olyphant, PA, Alexis graduated from Penn State University in 1960 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. The same year, he married his high school sweetheart, Martha Belle Bovard and the two moved to Philadelphia where Alexis earned a Juris Doctor degree from Temple University School of Law in 1963. He practiced intellectual property law for nearly 50 years at Synnestvedt & Lechner, LLP, where he served as Managing Partner, before concluding his career with Fox Rothschild, LLP.

A drive for hard work was instilled in Alexis from a young age. He was an excellent student; he served as an Altar Boy at All Saints Russian Orthodox Church in Olyphant; he earned an Eagle Scout badge by identifying and counting birds on the fields up the hill from their home in Peckville; and he was the president of Blakely High School Class of 1955. During high school he worked at the soda fountain at Pronkos drug store. Every summer while he was in college and law school, he lived and worked at Linn Lake Lodge in Canadensis, PA as the right-hand-man to the resorts owner.

In Philadelphia, Alexis was devoted to public service and the arts. He served as a Republican Committee Chair for over 40 years, was active at Oak Lane Presbyterian Church, and held leadership roles with the Bach Festival, The Philadelphia Singers, and Chorus America. He and Martha shared this passion for classical music, and together they enjoyed countless orchestral, choral and opera performances.

Committed to cultivating beauty, Alexis became an expert in growing hybrid tea roses, created a Monet-like oasis of azaleas and built a perennial garden to be enjoyed by generations to come. Alexis was an avid sports fan, eventually, if not reluctantly, expanding his fandom beyond his first love, the Boston Red Sox, to include the Philadelphia Phillies, Eagles and Sixers and of course, Penn State football. He was beloved member of the Lake Waynewood community for more than six decades, where he spent summers with family and friends, holding court around the large dinner table, taking early morning swims and playing many hours of tennis.

Joel Kenneth Wells, known affectionately to all as Joel, passed away peacefully of natural causes on July 1, 2025, in Delaware County, PA. Born on December 23, 1946, in Olney, PA, Joel's journey through life was marked by dedication, love, and a warm spirit that touched everyone he met. His 78 years were rich with experiences that shaped him into the remarkable man we remember today.

Joel's early life was rooted in the close-knit community of Olney, where he attended St. Aloysius Catholic Elementary School. His academic and athletic prowess shone brightly at Olney High School, leading to his acceptance into Penn State University in 1964. It was there that Joel's talent on the football field flourished as he played cornerback, starting for two years under the legendary coach Joe Paterno. His time at Penn State culminated in a Bachelor of Science in Sociology, a degree that reflected his interest in people and their well-being.

After college, Joel served his country with honor as a marksman in the Army, a role in which he demonstrated the same commitment and excellence that marked his entire life. In 1974, destiny smiled upon him when he met Barbara Gibbons. The two quickly became inseparable, and their marriage was a testament to enduring love and mutual respect.

Professionally, Joel's sociology degree opened doors to a fulfilling career that allowed him to connect with and serve others. His work was more than just a job; it was an extension of his caring nature and his desire to make a positive impact on the world around him.

A devout Christian, Joel's faith was the cornerstone of his life. It guided his actions and gave him strength, especially during life's challenging moments. His church community benefited from his active involvement, where he was a beacon of hope and kindness.

Joel's greatest joy, however, was his family. He was a loving husband to his wife, Barbara L. Wells, and a devoted father to his children, Diana Durrani and Donna Durrani. His grandchildren, Jaqueline, Jessica, Jamie, Jenna, William, and Matthew, were the light of his life, and he cherished every moment he spent with them. The birth of his great-grandchildren, Sean, Harlynn, Joshua, Jaxon, and Westyn, brought him immense pride and happiness.

His interests outside of family and work were a reflection of his sociable and active nature. Joel loved nothing more than spending time with his grandchildren, whether it was at family dinners or during golf outings. Each moment with friends and loved ones was treasured, and his presence at these gatherings was always a source of joy and laughter.

Joel's legacy is one of love, service, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community. He lived a life full of purpose and passion, leaving behind memories that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Today, we say goodbye to a man who was not just the patriarch of our family but also a friend, mentor, and shining example of goodness in the world.

As we mourn the loss of Joel Kenneth Wells, we also celebrate the remarkable life he led. We take comfort in knowing that his spirit lives on in each of us, guiding and inspiring us to live with the same grace and integrity that he embodied every day. Joel will be deeply missed, but his influence will continue to be felt for generations to come.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral on Tuesday July 8th from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the Church of St. Joseph, Woodlawn Ave., Collingdale. Followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Interment Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery.

To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Joel K. With 45 active brothers and a new pledge class, Omega continues to grow. This year we placed second in Homecoming, after winning for the three straight years. Brother Keegan Sobczak ’25 was featured in The Rattle for his leadership as the 2024–25 THON Executive Director, and Brother Jim Stalder ’62 received the Distinguished Achievement Award in a ceremony hosted by Brother Alan Copeland, now our National Vice President.

The chapter house remains resolute though aging, as it rapidly approaches its centenary. Thanks to your generosity, we’ve completed many needed repairs: a new commercial refrigerator, updated washers and dryers, repaired doors and steps, mold abatement, refinished floors, new faucets and fire doors, and full replacement of the side stairs to Prospect Ave. Your support has kept the house safe and the doors open.

It has truly been an honor to serve as your Board President for the past two years. However, with young families and other commitments, Brothers Wallace, Speagle, and I will not be seeking re-election next month. Our three positions—President, Vice President, and an At-Large seat—are open for election and we are accepting nominations through Saturday, November 29. To nominate yourself or another alumnus brother in good standing, please send their name and grad year (if known) to oxomegaboard@gmail.com. Voting will be virtual and open from November 30 through the annual corporation meeting, which is being held virtually at 5 PM Eastern on Sunday, December 14. Please visit our website, thetachiomega.com out for the 12/14 corporation meeting link and to check information on elections, bylaws, and Omega as a whole.

Any contribution, large or small, will make a real difference to the chapter and house. To donate, visit thetachiomega.com/donate, scan the QR code below or mail a check with the doantion form on the back of this mailer. Every dollar supports house operations, repairs, and brotherhood events. You can also update your contact info or catch up on news at thetachiomega.com.

Thank you to my fellow Board members for their dedication and friendship, and to all of you for your continued support. The chapter cannot stand alone—and time and again, you’ve shown up when called.

As we look ahead, I hope we all continue to give back to the chapter that helped shape us. In a world that often feels uncertain, I still find comfort in the first words of our Creed:

“I believe in Theta Chi.”

When Bill Lear (Omega/ Penn State 1973) helped launch a dance marathon at Penn State in 1973, it wasn’t out of grand ambition or a desire to start a legacy, so much as it was out of necessity. As the IFC President at the time, Lear found himself navigating a turbulent era marked by anti- war protests, race riots, and a growing mistrust in traditional institutions— Greek life included.

“The world was changing, we were losing chapters, and we were losing traditions,” he said. After a string of failed initiatives, including a canceled All-American football event and a Sugar Bowl trip that went belly-up, Lear and his IFC board were desperate to prove that the Greek community at Penn State could still make a meaningful impact.

So, in just three weeks, they created what they called the “IFC Dance Marathon,” gathering approximately 30 student participants and raising a modest $2,000 for The Arc of the United States (formerly known as the Association of Retarded Children). “I had a neighbor who was a babysitter, and she cared for a child with Down syndrome,” Lear explained. “It felt like a good thing to support.”

While Lear and others were satisfied with the result, no one expected the dance marathon to continue, let alone evolve into a campus-wide movement. “We weren’t trying to make it a tradition,” he said. “But when the next IFC board brought it back, and then Panhellenic got involved, it just kept growing.”

Now known as THON and benefitting the Four Diamonds Fund, the annual 46-hour dance marathon has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for families affected by pediatric cancer and is the world’s largest student-run philanthropy. And while Dr. Lear remains deeply honored to be recognized for his role in its origin, he’s always quick to redirect credit.

“I’m invited back most years, but I never want to take anything away from the students who make it what it is today. It’s not about me—it’s about the impact students can have on the world.”

He recalled being honored at the 25th anniversary for exemplifying one of the Four Diamonds’ core values—Wisdom, “I almost tripped over the 50-yard line receiving that award,” he chuckled. “To this day, I’m not sure there was any wisdom in that decision—but I’m glad it all worked out for the better.”

In 2025, more than five decades later, the same spirit of initiative and service continued through Keegan Sobczak (Omega/Penn State 2025).

Last February, deep in the heart of Happy Valley, the Bryce Jordan Center at Penn State once again became the epicenter of hope and unshakable community spirit. Led by executive director Keegan Sobczak throughout 2024/2025, THON shattered records by raising $17,737,040 for the fight against childhood cancer.

“As I stood on stage and read the final total aloud, I was overwhelmed by the emotion of the moment,” Keegan said. “The excitement, the love, the support; it all culminated in that number, but behind it were thousands of volunteers and millions of moments that made it possible.”

Under the banner of this year’s theme, “A Home for Hope,” Keegan and his team of student leaders guided more than 16,500 volunteers through a year of fundraising, awareness events, and personal connections with families impacted by childhood cancer. From late-night strategizing to early-morning logistics, Keegan played a key role in shaping the vision and impact of this extraordinary event.

For Keegan, the cause was deeply personal. Having experienced the impact of cancer diagnoses within his own family, he was drawn to THON’s mission to provide emotional and financial support, spread awareness, and fund critical research. “Cancer is an evil disease that seeks to destroy lives,” he said. “But through THON, we get to be part of the solution. We never know which dollar will be the one to find a cure—but this year, we raised over 17 million of them.”

Throughout the journey, Keegan found unwavering support from his Omega Chapter brothers. “There were nights I came home exhausted, but there was always a brother there to ask how the day went,” he said. “Even if they didn’t always understand the details of what I did, they supported me in every way that mattered.”

Keegan also reflected on Theta Chi’s motto of “an Assisting Hand” and how that ideal propelled him not only in THON, but in all areas of campus leadership. “When we have the ability to help others, we should. And when you have an entire brotherhood behind you with that same mindset, incredible things can happen.”

“It’s surreal to think that I was helping lead the very organization that Brother Bill Lear helped launch five decades ago,” Keegan said. “It feels like I was continuing a legacy that was meant to be.”

With the final total revealed, the line dances danced, and the lights of the Bryce Jordan Center dimmed for another year, Keegan closed a chapter of impact that will ripple forward for years to come.

Through the leadership and service of Keegan, Bill, and many others at Penn State, THON has raised more than $236,000,000 since 1973. However, it’s important to note that Keegan’s story and Bill’s story are not simply about leadership and service, but also brotherhood, tradition, and belief in a better tomorrow—For The Kids.

Rattle of Theta Chi - For the Kids

Summer 2025 Edition of the Rattle is Online

The latest edition of the Rattle is available online at the National website.
Tony lived by four pillars and instilled them in his children and grandchildren. "God, Country, Family and Education." We must have heard this mantra a million times growing up. The theme being you always sacrifice and work towards supporting the team or larger entity than yourself. One for all and all for one. The individual should be devoted to their family, the family devoted to their country, and the country devoted to their God. Something that at this moment in time rings even more true. Tony was a devout Catholic and gave all his success to the grace of God. He loved his country, was an unabashed patriot and served his county in the Navy with pride. His family was everything to him and he did whatever was needed in support of the family. Being educated to be able to make smart informed decisions in life was key to one's success. He was an amazing role model for so many and his warm smile and willingness to do anything for you will be his legacy.

He will be greatly missed, but the love, family bonds and traditions he built will live on for generations to come.

To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

Chapter Eternal - George Keller '55 & Anthony Richards '55

From Ties to Concrete: Rebuilding Our Fraternity Sidesteps

In the early 1980s, a group of our fraternity brothers took on a rugged, practical project: they constructed the side steps leading from the street up to the house using old railroad ties. At the time, it was a solid and budget-friendly solution—durable, straightforward, and built with the same gritty resourcefulness that defined our chapter.

For nearly four decades, those wooden steps held up through countless winters, pledge weeks, Homecomings, and everything else students could throw at it. But by 2025, time and the elements had finally taken their toll. The ties were splintered, uneven, and a growing safety concern. We knew it was time for a permanent upgrade.

This August, we replaced the old railroad-tie steps with brand-new concrete stairs, marking a major improvement to both the safety and appearance of the property.

We’ll be adding a handrail shortly to further enhance safety, particularly in icy or wet conditions. It's another step (literally) toward maintaining and improving our chapter house for the long haul.

Special thanks to the brothers and alumni who supported this project—and to those who originally built the railroad tie steps, your work served us well for nearly 40 years.

The day was a fantastic mix of food, drinks, and the kind of laughter that only comes from reconnecting with old friends. We reminisced about our days at PSU, relived some classic memories, and, as always, raised our glasses to honor the brothers we've lost. They may be gone, but they’ll always be with us in spirit.

Special shoutouts go to Chris Allocco, who earned the "man-miles" award for traveling all the way from southern Virginia to be with us. And on the flip side, the "reverse man-miles" honor goes to Richard Maltz, Jeff Damoctt, and Jim Stuhltrager — proud locals now calling State College home.

While State College and PSU keep evolving with new high-rises and constant construction, the town still feels like home … our shared happy place that never loses its magic.

The tradition lives on! We’re already looking ahead to the 6th Annual Get Together in 2026, likely in late July. Stay tuned — we’ll keep everyone posted via email, social media, and good old-fashioned word of mouth once the date is locked in.

Until next year — stay well, stay connected, and keep the memories alive!

5th Annual ‘80s Brothers Get Together – A Day to Remember!

2025 Spring Graduates

Congratulations to the newest graduates and alumni of Omega chapter!
