And just 104 days, 22 hours to the 31st annual Theta Chi Open. This year's event will be held at a new easier to play venue, Avalon Golf Course, located at 1510 Route 9 South in Cape May Court House, NJ. From last year's venue (Shoregate Country Club) it is located about 10 miles South on Route 9.

Cost is $49 per golfer. Post game banquet as always will be held at a shore house located in the Avalon, Stone Harbor area (TBD). This year we will be having steaks on the grill provided by Pappy's Barbecue. Price for the post game banquet is TBD but figure around $50. Tee times begin at 9:30 AM.

Stretch and Rock will be providing accommodations for many as they have in past years. Also the Windrift Hotel, located in Avalon, NJ is a popular place to stay as well. The phone number for the Windrift is 609-368-5175.

Each year there are surprise guests that show up that we haven't seen in years. From Jerry Kistler to Jeff Sleigh to Ken Slaby….who will they be this year? Please let us know if you will be attending as soon as possible.

Thanks.

As you may have heard, Penn State is gearing up to celebrate its 40th THON Weekend. Because of the strong foundation set by past THON volunteers, the Penn State Dance MaraTHON has outgrown its homes in the White Building and Rec Hall, and now is looking forward to its sixth THON in the Bryce Jordan Center.

Last year, THON raised $9.59 million for children battling cancer and gave nearly 97 percent of all funds raised to The Four Diamonds Fund. The Fund supports a team of pediatric oncologists, enables innovative cancer research through The Four Diamonds Pediatric Cancer Research Institute, and offsets the cost of treatment that insurance does not cover. Additionally, THON has contributed $10 million to the construction of a new Children's Hospital at Hershey Medical Center, which is set to open in the fall of 2012.

Only with the support and generosity of alumni and friends can THON continue to flourish. Please consider joining the fight by making a gift today. Every gift helps. For $25, The Four Diamonds Fund can provide one hour of music therapy for a child undergoing treatment; $100 funds one hour of cancer research, including salary and supplies; and $300 can help purchase a wig for a child who has lost his or her hair.

This year's theme is Brighten Every Journey. You can continue to brighten the lives of the Four Diamonds families by showing your dedication to THON. Together, we will make a difference in the life of a child!

Please mark your donation towards Theta Chi's efforts.

Donald 'Squirrel' Williams '42 was special.

Donald and Dale Rauch '42 lived across the hall from each other - 3rd floor north. I roomed with both from 1941 to 1943. Squirrel was great at math. He studied Thermo with Dale across the hall usually lying on Dale's bed, slide rule in hand, cigarettes in back pocket so he had to raise himself up to get a cigarette. Squirrel came to Theta Chi because his older brother had been there. When he got there (famous story) he was sitting in the dining room smoking and Mrs. Gifford came in and said, "Little boy, does your mother know you smoke". In a flash Squirrel replied, "Madam, I'll have you know I'm 16". His escapades and comments were great.

Squirrel came back from holiday one time with a four door 1936 Ford convertible. That's what took us to famers' barns to collect pigeons for the theater. Squirrel did the driving; Bob Thompson '43 climbed the barn rafters in the dark to get the birds; we brought them back and put them in a makeshift pen in Dale's room. Then we took them to the Cathaum theater to let loose when the house was full. They had to shoot them down eventually.

Squirrel answered most math questions by pointing out the calculus part and then describing the following algebra as "Rano, gano, heino, geen." Occasionally if he puzzled you he'd say ,"Geetzo faz". Don't say we're strange - just nutty.

When friends of his came up from Philly they raided the Beta Theta Pi house, stole their barrel of beer, set it up in Squirrel's room on the third floor and we all filled our glasses.

When we all went to Bellefonte in Squirrel's Ford to the Penn Belle drinking and one guy got into it with a customer (can't say his name - he became president of his company and is dead now) and got punched. What a mess. We made a return visit in the Ford and now I mustn't continue. I don't want to upset relatives.

Somehow he managed to acquire a phone from the Brockerhoff hotel in Bellefonte, got the dial speed synchronized, after some rude conversation with a poor innocent lady somewhere, and finally was able to call to Giff to see what was available for breakfast.

Despite his always saying he wasn't going to be a soldier, he was anyway and later became chief engineer of New Departure. Then I lost professional track. When Dale Rauch was dying, I got Squirrel to make the trip to Allentown to see him. It was too late; Dale didn't know him anymore. Heart breaking for me too.

Where: State College, PA
When: March 2-4th 2012.
Lodging: Days Inn ($89.00 a night special rate)
Who’s invited: Everyone / Any OX Omega ….But as a starting point, Pledge Classes Winter 82 through Spring of 86, then expand earlier and later classes once details are clearer?

We selected the weekend because spring break starts so we could have more lodging choices and basically take over town. We are looking to include wives, but they are optional.

We wanted to get some initial feedback from a few brothers to see if this would be feasible and generate enough interest or just a dumb idea (Ed and I should have our own reunion). We have made no firm plans but can if response is positive….i.e. block off rooms at Days Inn.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Theta Chi of Penn State secured a primary loan with a local State College bank and a 2nd mortgage from Norwich.

Having sold the house to National five years ago, Norwich took great care of our chapter house. They brought the house up to code and took care of many other issues with the property.

We thank Norwich Housing Corporation and its officers for helping Omega Chapter in their time of need and for caring for our home the last five years. All of Omega's brothers owe them a huge debt of gratitude.

As part of the approval, $344,000 of the chapter's $398,000 of proposed renovations were deemed acceptable for tax deductibility.

The Society was formed to aid in the preservation of historically and architecturally significant Greek houses, to work to have additional houses listed on the National Register of Historic Places, to fund historical research/writing projects, and to conduct educational open houses and seminars to educate the public about these Greek-affiliated structures.

To aid in preservation and rehabilitation of the chapter houses, the Society will provide grants for:

•	Health and safety code requirements that do not result in the loss of character
•	Major structural rehabilitation or restoration
•	Exterior rehabilitation or restoration
•	Interior rehabilitation or restoration

All donations made to the Society may be deducted as provided in Section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986.

Direct gifts of appreciated securities, beneficiary designations under wills and/or living trusts, and other similar gifts are welcome. Bequests, legacies, devises, transfers, or gifts to the Society are deductible for Federal estate and gift tax purposes if they meet the applicable provisions of sections 2055, 2106, and 2522 of the Code.

For the capital campaign, the alumni Board of Directors is working to determine the processes for assignment of tax deductibility, and the contribution pledge process. These will be announced after the alumni board completes acquisition of the house from National HQ at the end of September.

As most of you know, the Chapter is in the midst of changes and challenges that will echo in our thoughts and actions for the next few years. Some of these include:

- Completing the purchase of the chapter house from National
- Implementation Theta Chi Capital Campaign
- Organizing and facilitating the major repair of the Chapter House,
- Extending and reestablishing our lost communications with Brothers from any past year
- Mentoring a youthful and excited undergraduate chapter looking to take the next step as a power on the Penn State campus

Over the last two years, these tasks and goals have taken leaps and bounds from their inception thanks to our current Alumni Association Board of Directors. Yet, their successful time is coming to a close.

During this year’s homecoming weekend (October 15th) we are having our biennial elections for the Board of Directors and WE WANT YOU TO HELP or someone you think would be a strong asset. Requirements? Being an alumni of the Brotherhood, a good head on your shoulders, innovation, and motivation. Rewards? The opportunity to work with some of our chapter’s and campus’s brightest and most successful up-and-coming youth, revelry and celebration in the chapter’s successes that you will help forge, and the understanding you helped keep our Chapter a “Brotherhood for Life” for past and future generations.

If you, or another alumni you know, are interested in being nominated for the board please contact us by August 31st!

I hope to see you this Fall as Penn State and Theta Chi. Our brotherhood, like Penn State, is ready to return/continue to our glory!

Gifford and his family as a State College Historic Site. A dedication ceremony will be held and a historical marker will be erected in April 20, 2012, during Blue White weekend. Because Emanuel “Giffy” Gifford was the long time chef for Theta Chi Fraternity from 1930’s – 1960’s, the fraternity has been asked to participate in the ceremony. "Giffy" died on March 19, 1970.

“Lincoln Hall,” a boarding home for Black male students from the late 1930s to the early 1950s, served as an unofficial Black dormitory and early sanctuary for its residents. Located at 119 North Barnard Street, State College, Lincoln Hall was operated by Harry & Rosa Gifford, their two children – Emanuel and Bessie, and Emanuel’s wife. The family had moved from Mississippi and Louisiana to take employment as cooks at local fraternity houses, including Phi Gamma Delta and Theta Chi. The Gifford's and other Black cooks assisted many Black students by employing them to work for their meals. In addition, they were supportive of the students in many ways and when needed would even lend them money.

Lincoln Hall could house about 6 – 8 students at a time (which represented up to half the colored students on campus during the late 1930s), and became the center of Black life at Penn State. While the few Black female students could stay in the dorms during this period, the males were referred to either Lincoln Hall, or to the homes of a few white families that rented to Black students. Born out of an unofficial segregated housing rule that ran until about 1946, Lincoln Hall is credited for nurturing, supporting and encouraging an early generation of Black students in the isolated State College environment.

For the third year in row Brother Bob Mausser won the prestigious Red Jacket, this time in convincing fashion. Bob shot an 80 and finishing in second place was Brother Greg Schlegel shooting an 89. A post game banquet and barbecue was held afterwards at a beach house located in Stone Harbor, NJ. Many stories and lies were told about our great days in the house. Twenty one Brothers attended this year's event.

The 31st Annual Theta Chi Open will be held on Friday May 4th, 2012 and will be played at Avalon Golf Course located near Avalon, NJ.

The brothers posed for pictures with each of the elderly ladies under an archway simulating a High School Prom. After pictures, each brother escorted one of the Gamma Phi Beta girls and was introduced to all of the residents, after which they handed out flowers to the residents. The night was followed with socializing with the residents, along with some food, and even a little bit of old fashioned dancing.

Theta Chi teamed up with Alpha Omicron Pi and Alpha Tau Omega for the week and finished 2nd as a triad out of 22.

Under the triad theme, "PSU's Best Greek Week Ever," the triad competed in volleyball, basketball, soccer, and tug-of-war, as well as philanthropic work in the AIDS Walk and Day of Service. During the week, there were other events that members of the triad attended like the Greek Pageant, Variety Show, Red Cross Blood drive (many gave for their first time!), and a Penn State baseball game.

The week came to a close on Friday at the Red Bull Chariot Race where we not only placed 2nd, but won the Greek Spirit Award for having the most creativity and enthusiasm. Our very own Brent Homcha pulled his weight in the race and rumor had it he chugged 5 red bulls before each race!

Well, In November of last year, members of the Alumni Board initiated a study to determine if there would be sufficient support among our alumni for such a campaign.

As part of our study, we conducted an analysis to determine what renovations/modifications were needed on the house at 523 S. Allen Street; we contacted numerous alumni to ascertain their interest; we created an information brochure, sent to each alumni brother, to explain the need; and we initiated a separate feasibility study to determine our ability to allow tax deductions for campaign contributions.

While we are still working on this latter action, the board has determined that there is genuine interest among the alumni to support a capital campaign and to make it a success.

So, I am pleased to announce, that in conjunction with Founder's Day 2011, Omega Chapter of Theta Chi, officially kicked off its campaign to raise funds for restoration of our fraternity house. Over the next months we intend to contact every alumni member to ask for their financial help, and if capable, help in contacting other alumni brothers.

I thank you in advance for your support.

Please help our cause by registering in teams of 5-8 and making a $50 donation. Food and drinks will be provided, as well as entertainment by several DJs If preregistering, please send the money and team name/association/members to the Theta Chi house, 523 South Allen St, or place in the Theta Chi mailbox in the IFC office.

The tournament will begin promptly at 12pm. Please arrive early to register your team and to alleviate any bracket issues.
This Frisbee tournament is held annually in the spring for the Penn State community in order to fund raise towards The Pennsylvania CASA Association. Each year we hope to raise enough money to help support and promote court-appointed volunteer advocacy for abused and neglected children so that they can thrive in safe, permanent homes.

The house had a couple of plumbing backups and a plumber was called out twice in as many days to fix the problem. To determine what was causing the sewer backup, a camera was sent down the existing pipe where it was discovered a collapse of part of the pipe. A construction crew was able to get in and do the replacement and repairs within days of the damage being discovered.

The second annual OX rafting weekend will be May 20-21, 2011. Like last year, we're looking forward to a good mix of undergrads, recent grads, and alums who are a bit more seasoned, having fun away from our normal stomping grounds in State College. The event will take place in Ohio Pyle State Park, south of Pittsburgh. The main event would take place from Saturday morning through the early evening. Family and friends are welcome to participate as well, though it should be noted that Ohio Pyle is primarily a Class 3 paddle, with some class 4 rapids in certain areas, and therefore not suitable for young kids. Optionally, a group of brothers will be camping out the night before in Ohio Pyle State Park, Friday May 20th, and socializing around a campfire.

Whitewater Rafting on Saturday, May 21:
We are looking at two options for rafting. We can do the same run as last year (the lower yough) at a cost of approximately $65 per person (plus $5 parking fee) for the rafting trip, or try a more difficult section (the cheat river in Albright, WV) at a cost of approximately $95 per person (plus $5 parking fee). Either way, the trip will take 4-5 hours and includes a lunch break around the halfway mark. We could potentially do both if there is enough interest to split up, but we'd rather go as one big group. Depending on how many people we have for the trip, we'll either be starting at 9:00am, 11:00am (our preference), or 1:00pm – We will not know for sure until we have final numbers and can make the reservation. For more details on what to bring and what's included, go to http://www.laurelhighlands.com/faq/index.cfm We'd like to mention again that you are welcome to bring family and friends to this event.

Camping on Friday, May 20:
Cost is $15 per person for the night. We'll be in a group campsite with tables and a fire ring, and room for everyone's tents. We will bring some basic camping snacks for around the fire, and alcohol is permitted, so BYOB if you are of age. We'll be able to set up the site as people arrive throughout the late afternoon and evening. We'll head into town around 7pm for dinner at a local restaurant, to be determined at a later time. You will need to bring your own tent, sleeping bag, etc. Water and bathrooms are available a few minutes walk from the camp site.

If you are planning to join us for one or both of the events described above, click here to let us know, so we can confirm how many will be in your party. We will be making the reservations on Monday, April 18th, so make sure to message us by Sunday, April 17th, to confirm. If you are camping please bring cash if you will be joining us. For rafting, we'll be setting up a reservation with the rafting company, and you will have 48 hours to call up and pay with a credit card (we will post the info for the confirmation on this page once it is made).

If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to send me a message. Also, let us know which section of the river you'd like to do. We're going to have a ton of fun this weekend, so I hope you'll join us.

I'm pumped for another go at this river and look forward to a great turnout and a great weekend.

It's only 68 days to the Theta Chi Open. It is our 30th annual and for the 30th time it will be held on the first Friday in May. Once again it will be held at Shoregate Country Club. First tee time is 11 AM and greens fees are $79. Sounds good talking about drinking and golf after this winter.

A Pig Roast banquet will occur after the outing. It will be held at a house that Brother Cunningham will be renting (likely the same house as last year located in Avalon, NJ). Since it's the 30th we're planning on an enhanced special menu.

Saturday is Derby Day. During the day there are plenty of opportunities for fun including fishing or golfing at one of the other area courses. That evening the Kentucky Derby will be running and the usual Theta Chi festivities will occur.

I will need to provide numbers to the caterer and the golf course so I need to know your intentions to attend. Please let us know if you are planning on attending .

Omega Chapter raised a record high $33,425.62 and Penn State raised an amazing $9.56 million dollars over the course of the year. This is truly outstanding on both accounts and we thank from the bottom of our hearts anyone who donated to the cause this past year. Your support does not go unnoticed and the undergraduates, the Mitchell Family, and the Bobby Family appreciate it more than you would know. All four of our dancers, Dan Cartwright, Dan Weinman, Nate Wysocki, and Mike Garman, completed the 46 hour dance marathon this past weekend through laughter and tears.

We would like to personally thank our alumni that we know of that donated: Jacob Wolf, William Blakely, Scott Wilhide, Jake Kerr, David Hartwich, Eric Kraus, Jason Chottiner, Tim Wagner, John Fischer, Jared Metzger, Victor Howe, Jasen Marshall, Dr. Paul Vassil, Richard Maltz, Phillip Katchur, Jared Case, Mark Holst, Jerrell Habegger, Avi Sadiky and Andy Bott. If we missed any, we greatly apologize, but thank you none the less.

We look forward to next year's THON and hope to break the $40,000 mark as a fraternity.

For those of you who are not familiar with the weekend, it is a time when Alumni and active brothers gather for a few days to fix up the house, as well as relive the good old college years.

When you think back to your time as a brother, one thing will be present in everyone's memories, no matter the graduation year, 523 S. Allen St. However this house, the ever present symbol of Theta Chi's presence at Penn State, is getting old. Let's face it; a house doesn't go for 80 years without accumulating its fair share of dings and dents, especially one that's got 40 college students in it.

This is an opportunity give back for all the good times you had there, and to keep the house in its best shape so brothers for years to come can have those same memories. We accomplished a lot in the past few years, and hope to continue the success of this tradition here in 2011.

We are asking that each brother bring $50 to donate to a repair fund to be used on projects during the weekend. If you cannot make the trip to State College you can still support the weekend by sending your donation for the Reunion Weekend to:

Richard Maltz
Theta Chi of Penn State
1019 6th St. #6, Santa Monica, CA 90403
please make the checks payable to "Theta Chi of Penn State".
So, please save the weekend of March 26th to come to State College to lend a helping hand, to see some old friends and to help improve the house we have all called home at one point in our lives.

We look forward to seeing you.

This is a great weekend to meet up with your fellow brothers and to bring the family to Penn State for a visit.

The Blue-White football game is set to kick off at 2:00 p.m. with player photo and autograph sessions before the game. Admission and parking for the event are free.

We will be holding our annual Founder's Day meeting at 6pm on Saturday (April 16th). There will be a barbeque and picnic at the house during and after the meeting for brothers, family and friends.

Make your plans now so you don’t miss out on this fun weekend.

Please stop by the house and take a look for yourself all the great work being done to the chapter house and to meet our current undergraduate brothers. I know that when you return to visit the chapter you will marvel that the 'good old days' of your life at Theta Chi are alive, well, and still thriving.

The Penn State Dance MaraTHON is only 31 days away!!! We recently announced our 4 dancers for the 2011 THON. They are..

Dan Cartwright
Dan Weinman
Mike Garman
Nathaniel Wysocki

These guys have showed tremendous dedication and loyalty to the meaning of what THON is all about and they deserve to dance for Theta Chi more than anyone. Our updated total as of January 18, 2011 is $20,473.03. We are obviously happy for this large amount, but we think that we can do much better! There are two canning weekends coming up, so we will get a large amount from those and we hope to increase the support from our Alumni.

This is a time to show true brotherhood by supporting the Undergraduates in something they truly care a great deal about. Thank you so much to the nine alumni who have donated already (that the THON system has counted). They are Brothers Kevin Shayer, Jared Metzger, Jasen Marshall, Richard Maltz, Andrew Bott, Tim Wagner, Paul Vassil, Victor Howe, and John Fischer. It's great to see support from across the years.

We as the undergraduates kindly ask for your support in the coming weeks. You can either mail a check to the house: THON, 523 S. Allen St, State College, PA, 16801 or GO ONLINE by click here. Please make sure that you put Theta Chi as your organization so we get credit.

Thanks again Brothers!

30th Annual Theta Chi Open Update and Info

Mark the date down. The 2011 Open has been booked at Shoregate Country Club. As always it will be held on the First Friday in May…May 6th, 2011.

The venue and location will remain the same. Shoregate Country Club in Avalon, New Jersey. Cost for the golf remains at $79. Cost of the banquet has yet to be determined. Since it's the 30th annual I'm sure we'll be doing something special for the banquet.

If form holds the old guys (58 and older guys) will be staying at Brother Raymond's house. Brother Cunningham will be renting a house (probably the same house as last year located around 76th and Ocean Drive in Avalon) for the young guys (Class of 75 to 78 roughly). That house will be the scene of the banquet. Space is limited in that house, so the really younger guys may consider getting their own house or book rooms at the nearby Windrift Hotel. If the younger guys need help with those arrangements I can help.

Saturday May 7th is the Kentucky Derby so another party will be held that night as we bet on the ponies and drink multiple Julips.

Conditions were perfect due to 3-5 inches of fresh powder that had fallen the night before and sporadic snow showers throughout the day. The trip had its largest turn out yet with a group of 24, including 10 alumni brothers, and 7 undergraduate brothers. At the end of the day part of the group returned to the chapter house where Brothers Richard Bartnik ‘08, Jeff Damcott ‘91, and Jim Stuhltrager ’89, were waiting to join us for a Clem’s BBQ dinner.

Ambitious plans are already being made for the 5th Annual Theta Chi Ski Trip which may expand to an entire weekend.

You will be receiving in the mail a project summary of what we hope to accomplish with the campaign and a survey to help us judge our goals. If you don't receive the mailer in the next two weeks, we might have an out-of-date mailing address for you. Please let us know your current mailing address and we will send you one right away.

Our mission is to conduct a capital campaign to renovate the chapter house at 523 S. Allen Street, and to fund an endowment that will enable Omega Chapter of Theta Chi to remain a viable and leading force at The Pennsylvania State University

Our vision is that through this campaign and ongoing, increased involvement by the Alumni Corporation we will be able to secure the future of Theta Chi at Penn State. Funds raised will allow us to renovate the fraternity house to meet the demands of the current and future generations, and to attract members who meet the high standards of Theta Chi Brotherhood.

I hope you will take the time to read over the summary and to fill out a survey (you can take the survey online by clicking this link).

Last year, our fraternity raised $30,000 and our goal for the 2011 THON is $40,000. This year, we are motivated to fundraise like never before because of the fact that our THON child, Carly Mitchell, lost her fight to cancer at the young age of 5. Since being assigned Carly last fall, we slowly began to see the horrible effects that childhood cancer has on both a young child and the family as a whole. We have provided her family with immense support and this THON season is completely dedicated in her honor.

However, we cannot raise $40,000 alone as undergraduates through our canning trips and THONvelopes. We need the support from our Alumni, their friends, and their relatives to fight this horrible, horrible disease. We understand the times are tough, but any donation truly helps our cause.

All donations above $25 are tax deductible under the code 24-6000-376 and they can be sent directly to our chapter house, 523 S. Allen St., State College, PA, 16801. You can also donate online by going to www.thetachiomega.com/thon.html, and please make sure you designate Theta Chi as your Greek Organization.

We thank you in advance for your support in the THON fund raising season!
