Greensky Bluegrass Bandhas been a longtime favorite of TheTrebleClef.com since its/their/our inception. These guys manufacture some of the most raw, folkfull, soul shaking, and knee slapping string music out there today. Combining the artistry of past bluegrass tunes with the originality and honesty of their own creations makes their repertoire as much a journey through America's musical past as it is the embodiment of its current and potentially future states. In past shows we've been struck by the depth of sound just 4 individuals are capable of. Recently GBB announced the addition of Anders Beck into the band on a full-time basis. Anders will be manning the Dobro, a formidable instrument in the arsenal of any band but will most certainly resonate (ouch!) strongly in this bluegrass setting.

Invite a friend, heck kidnap one if you have to! And for the love of everything holy join the rest of us in a few short weeks for GBB's Chicago show. You DO NOT WANT TO MISS Greensky Bluegrass Band on Friday, January 18th at the Kinetic Playground. Yipeee!! See you there!?

It has recently come to the attention of the TheTrebleClef.com that Australian singer songwriter Xavier Rudd will be traveling to Chicago for a show on January 22nd, 2008. Simply put, the man is talented. His music is soft and socially conscious in nature. Xavier has armed himself with competent finger-licks for his guitar, a voice similar to one Paul Simon, and an overall stage presence that is inescapably authentic. Don’t be surprised if you hear him incorporate a didgeridoo or harmonica from time to time. Unfortunately, on occasion, his tunes can be a touch flighty. What else would you expect from someone who categorized as a Folk/Acoustic/Indie artist? Nonetheless, Mr. Rudd is one of those solo guys who sounds so full that you become convinced that he’s backed by multiple band members, but the fact is they just aren’t there... Check him out yourself this coming January at the Vic Theater.

So it looks like the Southern Boys are playing some hardball. We at the T-Clef wholly support WSP in all their efforts to combat scalping of their shows and the manipulation of the 'goodpeople' who merely want to attend a Panic show at a fair price.

Jeffrey Foucault was on the altar at Schuba's Saturday, September 8. His wool coat of a voice sang songs about a country's heartbreak, wounded lovers and life's caravan riding over familiar and unfamiliar landscapes. Foucault wound down his tour in Chicago after playing in Iowa, Door County, Wis., and the Cafe Carpe in Fort Atkinson, Wis., where he got his start as a folk singer songwriter.

The show was slated at 7 p.m. and as Foucault said, "My booking agent lives in a small town so she doesn't know that a 7 p.m. show here is the equivalent of a 3 p.m. show where she is from." Despite the early time, the room filled in with couples, single women, wanderers and Foucault’s varsity tennis partner from back home in Whitewater, Wis.

Foucault opened the show with two firsts. He played a new song on a "Red Rocket," a 1966 Harmony Rocket electric hollowbody. It was a new instrument, and his playing on it added a whole new depth to his songs. "Cold Satellite" is a collaboration between Foucault and David "Goody" Goodrich's wife. She wrote the lyrics, and Foucault wrote the music for the sweet yet eerie tune.

Foucault played tunes featured on his most recent record, Ghost Repeater, such as "Americans in Corduroys" and, a crowd favorite, "One for Sorrow." Before playing "Mesa, Arizona" on his acoustic, he spoke about feeling lonely on stage. On previous nights in Fort Atkinson, he had the "hometown advantage" and played with Dave Moore. Foucault's stories of jury duty and yoga balls drew laughs. He is polite and honest - although looking at him you might think he would rob a bank in the old West.

Another new song (Nothing I wouldn't do except stay) had Foucault channeling Otis Redding. And an old Springsteen song "State Trooper" got everyone’s attention. He broke out the "Red Rocket" a few more times for some moody excitement, but then gave the amp a rest for a while.

Foucault then played "Tall Grass in Old Virginny" - a song inspired by a tour with friends Paul Curreri and Andy Friedman - which he crooned. He said his mom would like him to croon all his songs, and maybe that could be his specialty. Though Foucault said, "I'm not sure what my specialty is."

Not having a specialty is one of Foucault's biggest strengths, but it doesn't easily categorize him. Americana, folk, blues, country and rock n’ roll have all become part of his catalog since his first release in 2001. Foucault carefully lays out a story in his songs and for the moment, you are alone in the night listening by the fire and a blue moon.

He closed the set out with a cover of "2:19" by Tom Waits and then came back for Greg Brown's "Driftless."

Catch him next time he comes through town.

22yr old Country Music singer Ashley Ray embodies everything Nashville music execs look for in their would be super stars. She's got the looks, the guitar talent (that is to say she can strum most major chords in C tuning and maybe even throw in a capo every now and then), and she's cute at hell. Undoubtedly her greatest assest, however, is her potent vocals. Let's face it, this chick can sing. Still, the music business has ruined far greater artists before and by the sound of some of the tracks already posted on Ashley's myspace page it's clear her forthecoming studio album will almost certainly be over-produced. Is there any hope for a Beauty in the belly of the Nashville beast? If anyone stands a chance, let's hope it's Ashley.

You can root for Ashely out at Joe's Bar Tuesday August 14th, 2007.
