The Utah Jazz have been fortunate in the fact that they seem to have never gone too long, with out having, in some form or another, a legitimate All-Star caliber player. That was until the departure of Deron Williams. Deron Williams and Coach Jerry Sloan left and Utah was left with, arguably, the worst team this franchise has ever seen. Being coached by the worst coach we have ever had. (No arguments). Beginning in February of 2011 the Utah Jazz has seen their longest, most depressing stint of “non all-star” play that my, relatively young, mind can remember. Season after season goes by and Jazz fans are left wondering if not only our market to small to acquire another All-Star caliber player, but if it might just be the fact that no one really wants to live in this, oh so Mormon state.

Then in steps Gordon Hayward.  In 2010 The Utah Jazz drafted Gordon Hayward with the 9th over all pick in the NBA draft. He came into Utah with a lot of people praising his “potential”. He had led his team all the way to a championship game, but had also been the one who, missed the shot. (Sorry Gordy).  As a Jazz fan I specifically remember being really excited after G-Times first season. He averaged an incredible 49% FG percentage and backed it up with an equally stunning 48% 3 pt performance. Jazz fans were ready for our next All-Star and sure enough he was given the work load of a team leader. Utah let veterans Paul Millsap, and Al Jefferson walk away for nothing, and gave their roles to Gordon.  The next few years Gordon took that role as captain and didn’t once complain about it. Year after year he was expected by fans to perform at a level that was beyond his capabilities, and year after year his percentages went down. Needless to say the fans were not pleased.

When the time came for Gordon to sign his contract extension, many fans were happy to see him go. The majority of the state felt as if he wasn’t the caliber of player we needed to get back into the playoffs and that he was calling for too much money.  When Dennis Lindsey and the Utah Jazz matched the max contract offer for Gordon Hayward  it left many of the fans wondering if Lindsey was going to be the GM he was known to be. Well, Lindsey proved us all wrong. He has an eye for talent that far exceeds even the most senior GM’s in the league. He saw the potential in Gordon that we as fans were not capable of seeing. Gordon stepped on to that basketball court in the 2014 season not only a very wealthy man, but with a determination to show Utah fans that he was the player we wanted him to be. Gordon’s FG percentage jumped an incredible 4% that year and his 3 pt percentages went up an even more impressive 6% from the previous year. Still down from his first year, but it was improvement all the same.

Gordon Hayward has gone on to be one of the most underrated and dynamic players in the league. Gordon is now one of only five players to average at lease 19.5 pts, 5 rebs, 3.5 assists, 1 steal and 1.5 3 pointers per game! That puts him in the same league as players such as Curry, Durant, Harden, PG 3 and King James. Not a bad crowd to be in. He has developed an arsenal of tricks ranging from step back jumpers, side-step shots, falling out of bounds 3 pointers and the move that is guaranteed to get him a foul call every time, the head cock. Gordon loves to drive into the lane and throw his head back at any sign of contact. Driving players like Chris Paul to do his best imitations to the referees. Gordon has averaged these numbers while guarding and being guarded by some of the most elite players in the NBA.

Its been over 6 years of G-Time in Utah now and he has proven to his fan base that there is no amount of money that is too much to keep him right here where he belongs. We have seen this kid grow into a man, get married and start a family. He is the type of player that Jazz fans have been waiting for. The perfect combination of John Stockton and Karl Malone. He is a Utah man through and through, and it will be a cold day in hell when we allow Gordon to leave Utah with out a fight.
