Blackpool’s leading accessible hotel, The New Mayfair has recently played host to both Mencap charity and Manx Blind Welfare Society.

The New Mayfair Hotel has undergone a major renovation project, this major change has positioned the hotel as one of the UK’s leading providers of accessible holidays. The hotel’s extensive facilities tick all the boxes when it comes to accessibility, and the New Mayfair team come with years of experience so guests are always in Safehands.

Mencap at Sealife Centre Blackpool

Mencap returned to Blackpool for the 2nd time in April 2013 for their annual fun-filled adventure weekend. The New Mayfair has become a natural choice of accessible hotel for the charity, Angela Bates from Mencap said “We've loved every minute of our time in Blackpool and we’ll be coming back; our holidays are all about having fun with friends which is exactly what our group of young people have done!”

Manx Bind Welfare Society

The Manx Blind Society have also returned for their 3rd time at The New Mayfair Hotel in May 2013. The Manx Blind Society have been visiting Blackpool for many years, flying over
from the Isle of Man. This year the society took part in day trips to both Liverpool Albert Docks and The Lake District.

Grundy Art Gallery

Carlisle Mencap Group return to The New Mayfair!

The New Mayfair Hotel recently had the pleasure of welcoming back the ladies and gentlemen of Carlisle Mencap. Our Mencap friends returned to the New Mayfair Hotel on Friday 19th April for their adventure fun-filled weekend break, with trips to Blackpool Sea Life Centre and Blackpool Zoo along with the New Mayfair's fantastic lively evening entertainment every night.

Every year the team at the New Mayfair look forward to welcoming big groups such as Mencap as Linda, the hotel's assistant manager says "As soon as the large groups arrive the hotel comes alive, we thrive on providing the highest level of service to our guests". As with all guests to The New Mayfair the Mencap friends were treated to hot drinks and snacks upon arrival to the hotel, whilst the management team spent time getting to know everyone individually.

On the second day of their holiday the Mencap group visited Blackpool Sea Life Centre, James from the marketing team tagged along for extra support he said "What a fun day I had! The ladies and gentlemen from Mencap kept me entertained all day and kept telling me which way I should be going around the Sea Life Centre!".

Blackpool Zoo became the groups choice of day trip for the third day of their holiday, Martin the hotels transport assistant accompanied everyone making sure their day was as enjoyable as possible. Once back at the hotel the Mencap group were treated to a fine dining experience in the hotels brand new South Beach Restaurant and the fun didn't stop there! With every evening at The New Mayfair, the hotel comes alive with fun, laughter and outstanding entertainment, which the Mencap group lapped up till the early hours!

REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT IS WELL UNDER WAY

In February 2011, work began on the 1/2 million redevelopment project at The New Mayfair Hotel, Blackpool, Lancashire.

Phase two of the redevelopment, which is expected to be completed by March 2013, will see the hotel totally overhauled. Work includes modern entrance way, additional ground floor accommodation, ocean breeze bar and cabaret lounge, south beach restaurant, new DDA compliant lifts, more panoramic sea views and further modern bedrooms, suites and shower rooms.

New Year... New Hotel!

Let’s face it; you’re probably well aware of our current refurbishment project as we've been shouting about it for weeks, we're that excited!

The New Mayfair Hotel will soon be ready to reopen its doors (new ones) once again, and if you haven’t experienced a short break with us before now really is the time!

We have been hard at work completely transforming the hotel which includes:

New Modern Entrance

We have renewed and improved the front and side elevation of the hotel to allow better access with a great new modern look.

Additional Ground Floor Rooms

We have extended both ground floor rooms to make two 4 bed interconnecting suites, both with electric profile beds and overhead tracking facilities.

Ocean Breeze Bar and Cabaret Lounge

2013 sees the extension of our bar and cabaret lounge complete with floor to ceiling bi fold doors, creating a unique experience of how to invite the outdoors in, complete with a new wooden floor, disco area. And a new dedicated accessible smoking area.

South Beach Restaurant

We have also extended our dining area to create more space for better accessibility, as well as being able to offer a separate function room for special events, birthdays, weddings and conferences.

New DDA Compliant List to All Floors

We have replaced our main lift with a new dda compliant lift which will now go to all floors giving us more accessible rooms with fantastic Sea views.

New Panoramic Sea View Suites

The front of third floor has been total remodelled to give 2 fantastic panoramic sea view suites, both with interconnecting doors, level access shower rooms, electric profile beds and overhead tracking hoists

New Look Modern Bedrooms and Shower Rooms

We have widened doors and corridors on the first and second floor for easier access, along with the installation of new modern shower rooms, additional electric beds have also been purchased to meet you our customer’s needs.

Blackpool a Winter Wonderland of festive fun

The bright lights may have dimmed as another illumination season comes to end but Blackpool takes on a whole new life turning into a festive extravaganza. Turkey and Tinsel beaks are back in Santa’s favourite holiday hotspot.

As the big day approaches The New Mayfair is already in party mode with its themed breaks including entertainment and festive menus waiting to satisfy your taste buds. Over the next 8 weeks a range of breaks are available including turkey and tinsel weekends along with tribute breaks featuring acts including Meatloaf, Abba and the King of Rock n’ Roll Elvis Presley.

Not only has the party started early at The New Mayfair Hotel but also in the UK’s capitol of fun Blackpool. Blackpool BID and North Pier are set to present a six week long Christmas Event which includes: Family Funfair with adult and children's rides. A Christmas Food and Drink Court. A Santa's Grotto. An amazing light show with characters from the Illuminations like basil brush, a tardis, a dalek and the Tardis.

Lasers and other light features will create and explosion of light and colour in St John's.
From 6.00 pm every Thursday evening there will be entertainment both from local bands and choirs and also featuring professional acts from around the country The launch night is Thursday the 22nd of November

As ever Blackpool Grand will launch its traditional family panto in the form of Cinderella staring Emmerdale’s Danny Miller, Milkshake's Amy Thompson, BBC Lancashire’s Steve Royle and Radio Wave's Hayley Kay. The star studded family panto starts on Friday 7^th December running until Sunday 6^th January

Showzam back for 2013

Roll up, roll up...

Showzam! Blackpool’s festival celebrating Circus, Magic and New Variety is set to return.

Building on the successes of the previous five years, the news of this grant for 2013 will enable the programming of innovative circus, performance and street artists.
Natalie Wyatt, Managing Director of Marketing Blackpool, said: “There is always a real buzz in the air when we discuss Showzam! and we are delighted that Arts Council England has awarded us £99k as this makes a big difference to the variety of events we can offer.
“2013 will be the sixth year of this hugely popular event which also brings to the forefront Blackpool’s entertainment heritage buildings such as the Winter Gardens, the Grand Theatre and The Blackpool Tower Ballroom, while also celebrating the future with venues such as Blackpool Pleasure Beach being utilised to the full.

“By combining heritage and contemporary programming practice with new commissions the aim is to bring Blackpool back to the heart of circus and variety culture.”
Events already planned for Showzam! in February include a specially commissioned Youth Circus from the world famous Gerry Cottle, The Invisible Circus, Spy Monkey, the increasingly popular Carnival Ball, a massive variety of street performers including Musical Ruth and The Grannies, and Mr Albert’s Big Finish.
There will also be a wide selection of tours and talks including Pleasure Beach Resort Costume Tours; Palaces of Delight, presented by Showzam Curator Professor Vanessa Toulmin, exploring the beauty and wealth of Matcham architecture in Blackpoo las well as the Winter Gardens and The Blackpool Tower & Circus Heritage Tour.
And the historic Winter Gardens will well and truly be in the limelight as it has been identified as Showzam! Central while venues including The Grand Theatre, the piers, Blackpool Pleasure Beach and The Blackpool Tower remain vital to the success of this fantastic February Festival.
Ms Wyatt added: “Variety is the key to making Showzam! a success. We want as many people as possible to enjoy this and the grant from Arts Council England enables us to add a new dimension for 2013.
“At the heart of Showzam! lies one thing, we are all working together to improve the image and feel of Blackpool in order to attract visitors from far and wide while also developing and encouraging local audiences.”
And Professor Vanessa agrees: “It is fantastic that we have got this money from Arts Council England. Showzam! is wonderful for Blackpool and I am looking forward to yet another amazing event.”
Anthony Preston, Arts Council England’s Senior Manager for Regional Planning said: “Arts Council England is thrilled to be supporting Showzam! in Blackpool. The event draws on Blackpool’s unique identity as a place of entertainment. The history of circus, cabaret and variety in the seaside resort has been given a contemporary twist through this festival, drawing new audiences and visitors to the resort as part of the cultural renaissance of the town.
“Investment from our National Lottery funded Grants for the arts scheme has seen the festival grow over the last six years and the 2013 event will be the best yet with three new specially commissioned pieces, Invisible Circus, Spymonkey and Wondertours.
“Showzam! has been particularly beneficial in bringing a new cultural experience toBlackpool at a time of year that is traditionally quiet, giving an added boost for local businesses. We are excited to be working with Marketing Blackpool and partners, building on the recent success of a £3 million investment in the town through our Creative people and places fund.”
Showzam! 2013 runs from Friday 15th February to Sunday 24th.

Firework spectacular returns for new battle

Autumn in Blackpool not only means 66 nights of the world famous illuminations but also the return of the world fireworks championships featuring 5 of the top pyrotechnics experts vying for the award of world fireworks champion 2012.

Each Friday will see a different country launch a spectacular display to music of Blackpool’s famous North Pier in the shadow of the iconic Blackpool Tower.

Canada were the first to light up the sky last Friday and France’s Brezac Artifices will take to the skies this Friday, while Australia’s Howard & Sons will make their attempt for the crown in a fortnight’s time.

The festival will be rounded off on September 28 with a display by British-based Kimbolton Fireworks.
Natalie Wyatt, managing director of Marketing Blackpool, said: “We will all be looking forward to witnessing some spectacular displays and welcoming many people into the resort.”

Each display in the competition is free to watch with spectator viewing areas found on North Promenade and at the fully accessible Tower Festival Headland.

The unique displays mirror those witnessed at this year’s Olympics and traditional New Year’s celebrations in major cities worldwide.

Paralympics Showcase Disabled Facilities

The 2012 Paralympics have provided a valuable opportunity to assess the UK’s tourism facilities for disabled travellers, calls have been made for better staff training and clearer information about disabled access and facilities.

The biggest Paralympics ever have highlighted that UK’s perception of disability has made huge strides in recent times including in that of the willingness of attractions and hotels to provide better facilities, but as commented by Guy Parckar head of policy and campaigns at the charity Leonard Cheshire Disability, “although significant progress had been made in this area in recent years, there was plenty of room for improvement.”

“Often accessible hotels are rendered totally inaccessible because staff aren’t trained,” he said. “We recently heard of a hotel guest who was turned away because he had a guide dog – remarkable in this day and age.

The New Mayfair in Blackpool, continues to set the standard in disabled travel with over £500k already invested in the seafront property and a further planned revamp this winter. Hotel Manager Karen Dixon says “Britai<>n has an opportunity to set the standard of views on disabled travel and the provision of services available”

“We at The New Mayfair had a vision to create a truly accessible and modern venue with the latest in comforts and design. We make sure that we accommodate everyone with highly trained and experienced staff, the free hire of equipment and even an accessible minibus which provides transport to the hotel and also day trips”

Sheila Wilks, from Leeds with fellow luncheon club members, says: “It’s lovely, rooms are really nice and you can’t fault the food.” Menus have been devised by leading local chef Jamie Manning.

Carers Gemma Irvine and Kaye Henderson have brought Linda Sanderson and Karen Pitrie, who have cerebral palsy, for four days respite from a specialist facility at Ellington, Northumberland.

“It provides real stimulus,” says Gemma. “The hotel couldn’t be better.”

Golden Trio set for the Golden Mile

It has just been announced that 3 of team GBs Olympic stars will take the honour of launching the 2012 Blackpool Illuminations in their century celebrations.

Beth Tweddle, Greg Rutherford and Luke Campbell, stars from London 2012, will flick the switch to power up on The Lights on Friday, August 31.

Liverpool gymnast Beth secured a bronze medal on the uneven bars at the Olympics, making her the most decorated British gymnast in history.

Greg became the first Briton to win Olympic gold in the long-jump since 1964 and amateur boxer Luke Campbell won gold in the bantamweight division.

2012 marks 100 years of the Illuminations and the Switch-On is to be held on The Tower Festival Headland for the first time ever.

The announcement of the sporting heroes follows on from the concert line-up featuring an eclectic mix artists including X-Factor winners Little Mix, Lemar, Amy MacDonald, Lawson, Paloma Faith, Scouting For Girls, Noisettes and Blackpool singer-songwriter Karima Francis are among the acts.

This years illuminations will set the promenade off in a noise of colouring and vibrancy from Friday 31st August to 4th November 2012. As an added bonus for 2012 the new accessible trams will be fully operational touring the entire display.

Memories to Last a Lifetime

The New Mayfair Hotel in Blackpool creates many fantastic memories for the hundreds who chose to holiday there’re every year, but none more so than that of veteran holiday maker Ron Elton.

Ron Elton met Specialist Hotel Manager Karen Dixon over 3 years ago whilst holidaying in the resort. Whilst at a popular disability exhibition, Karen met Ron and talked to him about revisiting Blackpool to remember the times they had spent together and moments they had spent. Karen offered Ron a free holiday who after initial refusal accepted and in December 2008 revisited Blackpool where his confidence and sprit in life was resorted.

Not only did Ron enjoy his time at the hotel, he was destined to meet a special new friend, Mavis Brearley, Mavis lives in Bispham and was in Blackpool with some friends, Ron and Mavis gelled together from the moment they met. Over the last 3 years Karen has stayed in contact with Ron, who has continued to visit Mavis, they call each other every day “ although Mavis says she has told him to call after 8.30am sometimes so she can have a lie in.“

In March 2011 Karen was offered the unique opportunity to manage and develop The New Mayfair Hotel situated on Blackpool’s Promenade after the acquisition by Safehands Care, the North Wests leading care group. Karen felt the hotel provided a sound base to create a fantastic, stylish and fully accessible venue for those with additional needs to enjoy a 5 star experience in a stunning location.

Ron and Mavis found out of Karen’s new venture and decided to pay her a visit, their first visit was in November 2011 for the hotels first Coronation Street Special, where they met street star Michelle Collins (AKA Stella Price). Although winter was on its way, the warm friendly atmosphere along with caring staff with fabulous turkey and tinsel theme made it a holiday to remember, so much so that Mavis decided it was the New Mayfair Hotel where she wanted to spend her Birthday Party. Mavis and Ron celebrated her birthday at the hotel, a cake was provided courtesy of the hotel and her family and friends visited throughout her special day. Mavis stated that she chose the hotel because “the staff are so friendly, nothing is too much trouble, it’s like a home from home staying in the hotel which is such a warm and comfortable environment“. Ron and Mavis are due back to the hotel in December to celebrate the anniversary of their newly found friendship.

Since 1957 when the first club was created, Phab has supported a network of clubs across England and Wales run by the members for the members.

Each club organises a diverse programme of activities - arts and crafts, quizzes and games, speakers, sports, discos, days out, group holidays and usually meets once a week.

The clubs cater for juniors (under 18) and/or seniors. Members who joined as teenagers often remain or return as seniors. What the clubs all offer is the opportunity for everyone to get together, enjoy each other´s company and have fun, providing valuable support for families and carers who can sometimes feel isolated. Siblings belong to the same club and families are able to enjoy events and activities together.

All clubs are encouraged to meet on a regular basis and nationally at conferences and events such as the annual Heartbeat Hike in London´s Hyde Park
