Fall 2007 Semester:
What church, more than any other, made the apostle Paul keep reaching for Extra Strength Tylenol? There’s little doubt it was the gathering of young Christians in the ancient Greek city of Corinth.

Corinth was the Las Vegas of the ancient world: arrogant, immoral, and over-the-top… and proud of it. It seemed a most improbable place to recruit new followers of Jesus. Paul, however, invested several years in the city that unabashedly sponsored Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love.

Not surprisingly, Corinth’s start-up congregation struggled with a laundry list of problems: openly flaunted disunity, sexual scandals, intra-church lawsuits, spiritual gift envy, divorce and remarriage, confused single adults, women’s liberation and oppression, speaking in tongues, and theological battles over the meaning of the resurrection.

And you think today’s churches have problems.

In truth, much of what we know about finding health for the body of Christ comes from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians. This fall and winter join Senior Pastor Glenn McDonald and ZPC lay teacher Jim Livengood as theWord@ZPC delves deeply into this extraordinary
New Testament book.

Winter 2008 Semester:

Jesus loves his body.

All those who trust Jesus automatically become part of his body on earth. Every day the Son of God carries out his global mission of listening, loving, giving, and serving through Christians who are willing to do his work.

The apostle Paul’s correspondence that has come to be known as First Corinthians is the “body life” book of the New Testament. In its chapters, Paul provides instructions as to how our spiritual gifts and our acts of love can transform our relationships and change the world.

You’re invited to join Senior Pastor Glenn McDonald and ZPC Lay Teacher Jim Livengood as they present a verse-by-verse study of the second half of First Corinthians at TheWord@ZPC during the winter semester of WednesdaysAlive!
